The utilization of computer assisted tomography (CT or CAT-scan)as general non-destructive examination (NDE) technique and as research tool for scientists in South Africa, is limited due to the relative unavailability or nonexistence of such specialized analytical equipment. Many medical hospitals are equipped with X-ray CT scanners for the diagnostic examination of patients but do not easily allow paleontologist or other scientist to utilize their very expensive equipment. As from 2003, Necsa hosts the South African Neutron Radiography (SANRAD) and tomography facility where neutrons from the SAFARI-1 nuclear research reactor and their penetrating power as well as X-rays as a complementing tool, are utilized in many R&D applications. This facility is being made available to HEI and specifically utilized by postgraduate students as part of their studies and/or by industry on an ad hoc commercial basis. The capability of these radiation imaging facilities at Necsa will be demonstrated in areas such as paleontology, geosciences and specifically the physical properties of rock and the distribution of minerals in borehole cores, petrophysics to predict the percentage tar/oil/water content within sandstone samples and others. The penetration capability of neutrons through specimens with a matrix of high atomic number (dense materials) and their ability to be attenuated by low atomic number material (light density) makes neutron imaging complementary to X-ray imaging. The capability of X-ray and gamma radiation for relatively easy penetration through specimens of low atomic number allows for viewing of imbedded high atomic number materials and density variation. X-ray micro focus radiography is capable of resolving objects of micro scale size that are micro distances apart whereas X-ray phase contrast radiography utilizes the wave properties of the electromagnetic spectrum of X-rays to clearly define edges of the specimen under investigation. Many applications with neutrons as imaging probe are successfully applied at several facilities across the globe such as at NIST in USA, Neutra at PSI in Switzerland, and ANTARES at FRM2 in Germany, etc, are documented 4?9, through world conferences on neutron radiography, for example. This is achieved through very well thought through and implemented instrumentation from the production of neutrons to their detection and interpretation of the images. The need arose at Necsa to upgrade the current facility from 42-year-old technology, which was successfully applied in neutron imaging over the past 10 years, to state-of-the-art technology found at European facilities. This initiative started under the auspices of an IAEA-TC programme for the period 2007?2010.

In this study, sulfide-type inclusion morphologies of a Ca-treated hot-rolled wheel steel, Grade-X, were investigated. The specimens taken from the hot-rolled products of Grade-X heats were studied. The size and distribution of elongated sulfide inclusions were examined for the heats of different S levels. Elongated sulfide inclusions were either not observed or rarely encountered when ladle analysis S content was below 50 ppm. The size and relative abundance of sulfide inclusions were reported to increase markedly when the S composition was greater than or equal to 70 ppm and the Ca/S ratio was less than 0.50. The effect of Ti addition (0.010?0.020% Ti) on sulfide-type inclusion morphologies was then investigated for heats having a sulfur content higher than 50 ppm. Addition of Ti was found to have a partial effect on decreasing the size of sulfide-type inclusions under real steelmaking conditions. Keywords Sulfide inclusions, Ca-treatment, titanium.

The experiment with backfill at Harmony was mainly an attempt to improve the ground conditions in a particularly tricky section of the mine. A deslimed tailings system was selected for financial reasons, ease of installation, ease of operation and its low level of mechanization. The design of the system has three aspects: firstly, to define the parameters of the backfill material itself; secondly, to design a reliable plant which could consistently produce the desired material in sufficient quantities; and, thirdly, to design a fill distribution system for maximum reliability in the shaft, minimum pipe line velocity, pressure and cost in the horizontal sections and consistency and reliability at the delivery end. The system was successfully constructed and commissioned in a short space of time at a relatively low cost. It has now reached its full potential, and very encouraging results have been achieved with regard to cost savings, ground conditions, ventilation and accident statistics.

This paper outlines a simple methodology for mineral characterization, developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) managed research project P777 ?The Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of Clerici?s Solution)?. The project was sponsored by De Beers, Rio Tinto and Iluka Resources. Heavy mineral characterization of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes is frequently conducted using laboratory heavy liquid analysis. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (?heavy?) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilized at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. Beyond this value organic liquids can be used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. For the characterization of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (e.g. anatase RD 3.9, rutile RD 4.2, ilmenite RD 4.4?4.7 and zircon RD4.6?4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to Clerici?s solution. Clerici?s solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by few laboratories worldwide, with costs reflecting the chemical costs, infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (e.g. blood testing of exposed staff). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation has been developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstates solutions, that can replace Clerici?s solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (e.g. -250 +150microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 4.0 is outlined and the comparison of results with Clerici?s solution presented. In addition, preliminary work on density fractionation of zircon samples is presented. Zircon fractionation relates to their inclusion, radionuclide content and metamictization.

Previously, the grade of ore at the shaft head was taken to be equivalent to the grade measured in the faces by means of chip sampling. The tonnage mined from the stopes is determined from survey volumetric measurements. Estimates of shaft head grade and tons include the grades and tons of waste, development ore, sweepings from old areas, and other sources, not all of which are sampled. The tonnage of ore delivered at the shaft is often estimated using skip factors. These factors are subject to manipulation and not all the skips are filled to the same level. Consequently, both the grade and tonnage of ore delivered at shaft head are subject to a measure of uncertainty. For many years, these uncertainties have led to disputes between shaft managers and metallurgists over the reconciliation between shaft tons and grade and plant tons and grade. These problems are compounded when several shafts feed a central processing plant. Shaft bonuses and a shaft?s profitability are affected by poor gold allocation methods. Without measurement of the grade and tonnage from all shafts, a poorly performing shaft could benefit at the expense of the other shafts. In order to improve the measurement of grades and tonnage at the shaft head, which is the custody transfer point between the mine and surface operations, South African mining companies have developed a methodology to measure the mass of ore from each shaft using rail weighing equipment, and the run-of-mine grades delivered from each shaft using cross-stream (go-belt) sampling. Harmony Gold Mining Company has implemented the rail weighing and go-belt sampling methods for their shafts. This paper deals with the statistical tests on the procedures and control measures that are in place to establish confidence in the gold allocations. The metal accounting system for examining the allocations follows the first principle of the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting Code of Practice namely ?The metal accounting system must be based on accurate measurements of mass and metal content. It must be based on a full check-in check-out system?. The check-in is mass and grade of run-of-mine ore and the check-outs are the plant input grades and the recovery and residue from the plant. The balances between check-in and check-out are the subject of the statistical analyses, which have been conducted using the classical statistical tests and procedures that are generally used in all fields of endeavour. It is concluded that the gold allocation procedures that rely on go-belt sampling and rail weighing of ore from shafts has been successfully implemented, and that the system, which has been in operation at Harmony since 1993, has won general acceptance from stakeholders, with the gold allocations being perceived as being fair to all. Apart from the on-mine issues of bonuses and fair allocations, accurate metal accounting assists in the broader issues of generating accurate production figures for management. An added benefit of weighing and sampling ore at the shaft head has been that shafts now have daily moving average grades, which are used for grade control. The go-belt sample at the shaft head is the first accurate sample of production in the value chain from face sampling to gold bullion. This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

A high volume of slimes which are separated out during the mining of heavy mineral sands has a high environmental impact and results in great capital as well as operational expenses. The presence of clay minerals drastically increases the slimes volume that needs to be catered for due to its low settling capability as well as swelling characteristics. By adding coagulants in the form of cations and organics, one can improve the settling rate of the minerals as well as the degree of solid bed compaction. The addition of flocculant, which is currently used in industry to improve settling rate, is detrimental to solid bed compaction. By combining the cations and flocculant one can dramatically improve the solid bed compaction. This combination is, however, detrimental to the settling rate of kaolinite-rich slimes but improves the settling rate of smectite-rich slimes. Organics can also be used to produce a clear supernatant and improve the settling rate.

SYNOPSIS The phase equilibria, viscosities and sulphur capacities of titaniferous slags were determined in the composition range of CaO = 30 to 0 per cent, MgO = 0 to 30 per cent, SiO2 = 19.69 per cent, AI.O. = 13.12 per cent and TiO2 = 37.19 per cent. The phase equilibria were determined by high temperature microscopy, the viscosities were measured using a rotating outer cylinder viscometer and the sulphur capacities were evaluated from the results obtained by equilibrating the slag in a gas stream of CO, CO2 and SO2. The behaviour of these titaniferous slags under reducing conditions was examined. Possible use of the slags for aggregate, or slag-cement, and the possibility of extracting the TiO2 are discussed. These titaniferous magnetites occur as segregations in the gabbro body and the TiO2 is mainly present within the structure of other constituent minerals but also occurs in smaller amounts as ilmenite and ulvospinel. The vanadium is thought to be present in the iron oxide phase due to isomorphous replacement of the iron. Until very recently, it was feared that the high titania content of these titaniferous magnetites would militate against their value as useful iron ores. The Namakwa Sands heavy mineral deposit is located along the West Coast of South Africa and the mine is a world class producer of high quality zircon, ilmenite and rutile concentrates from essentially unconsolidated marine and aeolian sands of Cainozoic age. The objective of this study was to characterize rutile with respect to distribution, grain size, textures, colour and mineral chemistry within the Namakwa Sands orebody with the aim to explain its overall poor recovery. A representative suite of heavy mineral concentrates from various sections of the orebody and stages in the recovery circuit has been investigated microscopically and by means of SEM-EDS and LA-ICP-MS. The rutile grain size distribution displays a wide range and is directly related to its variable chemistry and consequently density. In placer deposits such as Namakwa Sands, mineral sorting is a function of hydraulic equivalence, and high density grains are smaller than the lighter grains when deposited under similar conditions. Grain size is also a function of sediment maturity, and the highly mature red aeolians and (RAS) component of the deposit has a coarser grain size than the less mature orange feldspathic marine sands (OFS). The above primary characteristics of rutile are responsible for the loss of the coarse-grained fraction during screening and, given the empirically determined relationship that increased substitution elements reduce conductivity, also during electrostatic separation. Provenance studies using geothermometry have shown that the heavy mineral suite has been sourced mainly by the proximal medium-to high-grade Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex. The positive relationship between substitution elements and temperature of formation explains their high concentration in rutile of this deposit. The heterogeneity of rutile, produced by the combination of a high temperature primary source and the typical marine-aeolian placer genesis is deposit specific and unfortunately not conducive to high recovery levels in the current Namakwa Sands beneficiation circuit.

Exxaro installed their first ultra fines treatment plant at Leeuwpan Coal mine. The plant is now fully operational and results already show that the plant has great potential. The plant was designed and installed by DRA. Several challenges were faced during the installation due to the space constraints in the Leeuwpan plant. Efficiency tests were conducted on both modules after commissioning and showed very promising results. A lower ash product with a higher yield can be produced with the fine coal dense medium cyclones compared to the spirals previously employed.

A new approach to the -study of human factors in stope productivity by A. C. LAWRENCE B. Econ., D. Com. (S.A.) (Member) The extent of the improvement in mean performance which could be achieved by reducing the variance between stoping gangs is examined, and it is shown that a worthwhile gain would result if variance were reduced by as little as 5 to 15 per cent. The problem of identifying human factors which contributed towards variance in gang performance was examined in one gold mine. A total of 342 'observations' on 49 stoping gangs were gathered, each observation consisting of a set of figures for 36 variables for one gang for one week. The variables included 'stope factors' such as face length, 'gang factors' such as the ethnic composition of the gang, and 'supervisory factors' such as the experience of the miner. These variables were related to 'tons trammed per week' as a measure of work performance. The findings showed that certain of the predictor variables accounted for 66 per cent of the variance in gang performance and about two thirds of this could be attributed to gang and supervisory factors, that is to the 'human factors'. The method suggests a basis for a new approach to the identification of human factors and is a promising step towards optimizing gang performance.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a microcomputer-based mineral modelling system that enhances analytical capabilities of the agency. It draws upon the extensive data base previously developed for the Bureau's Availability studies. The model is first formulated as a generalized network flow optimization problem, the optimal flows from which are fed into a transportation algorithm. The goal of the modelling system is first to fulfill prespecified demand at the minimum opportunity cost and second to identify feasible, optimal trade patterns. The system facilitates the analysis of policy issues on a real-time basis and supports the Bureau's mission to assess mineral resources.

The surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar were investigated by XPS, zeta potential measurements and first principle calculation. The results indicated that the zeta potential of feldspar was more negative than that of spodumene. The most possible active sites on spodumene and feldspar were Al sites and O sites. However, the number, type and activity of these sites were different. The flotation behaviour of five new collectors (cationic collector decyloxy-propyl-amine (DPA), anionic collector α-bromododecanoic acid (α-BDDA), N-Dodecyliminodiacetic acid (DIDA), and mixed collector DPA-BDDA and DPA-DIDA) were investigated through micro flotation experiments and analysed based on the surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar. The results revealed that cationic collector DPA processed a high collecting capacity for both minerals. The highest recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 91.60% and 95.30% respectively. The anionic collector α-BDDA and DIDA showed poor flotation behaviour. The recovery of spodumene and feldspar when using α-BDDA as collector was less than 5% and when using DIDA as collector was less than 1%. For the mixed collector DPA-BDDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 82.27% and 32.61% respectively at pH 4.5. For mixed collector DPA-DIDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 35.69% and 9.08% respectively at pH 5.8. The results indicated that the cationic collector had high collecting capacity, but low selectivity. The collecting capacity of anionic collector for spodumene and feldspar was poor at the same concentration compared with cationic collectors. Mixed collector DPA-BDDA showed good flotation behaviour and selectivity on spodumene. The ―COO- in mixed collector might improve the selectivity. However, too much ―COO- would increase the electrostatic repulsion, which might cause low selectively and poor recovery. Zimbabwe hosts a varied array of coloured gemstones. With the exception of emerald deposits and several world-class pegmatites, few of the gemstone occurrences have received detailed attention from the scientific or mineral exploration communities. In the present contribution we summarize the status of knowledge of the gemstone deposits and occurrences in Zimbabwe, paying particular attention to the geological settings in which they were formed. Synthesis of this regional geological approach reveals that there may be significant exploration potential for further gemstone occurrences, particularly in the extensive pegmatite fields and in Al-enriched orogenic belts that have undergone greenschist to granulite facies metamorphism. Further socio-economic and developmental initiatives will aid in optimizing the value generation from this important sub-sector.

South Africa depends to a considerable measure on the exploitation of mineral reserves and the processing of these minerals. One of the prime requirements for the mining and metallurgical industry to continue in this vital role is access to sufficient energy in a suitable form. Hence, four important questions are discussed: Does South Africa have sufficient energy for the processing of its minerals and metals! Will the cost of energy allow South Africa's minerals and metals to compete on world markets? Can mining and metallurgical processes become more energy-efficiency Can mining and metallurgical processes be adapted to the various forms of energy that may have to be utilized in the future? It is concluded that about 26 per cent of the extractable reserves of coal would be required in the mining and processing of 50 per cent of South Africa's reserves of gold, platinum-group metals, copper, iron, ferrochromium, and ferromanganese. However, the reducing agents required exceed the extractable reserves but not the total estimates of mineable in situ resources of metallurgical coal and anthracitic coal. Even under the severe constraint that coal could become virtually the sole source of energy, only about three-quarters of the extractable reserves of coal would have been consumed by the year 2025. The reasonably assured resources of uranium metal that can be recovered at less than $80 per kilogram are considerable and, at current conversion efficiencies to electricity, are equivalent to one-fifth of the extractable reserves of coal. The rate of exportation of energy in the form of U30. was about five times that of coal in 1978. It is pointed out that the price of energy has a direct effect on the competitiveness of metals, and, although constituting only a small proportion of the selling price of precious metals, it represents a significant proportion of the selling price of copper and metals recovered from oxide ores. The scope for the conservation of energy appears to be greater in the extraction and conversion of primary energy-carriers to electrical energy than in other mining or metallurgical fields. Provided that alternative sources of energy can be converted to electrical energy, they can be applied to the mining and metallurgical industries. The decision as to which type of energy should be used in specific mining and metallurgical situations is complicated, and is likely to be subjected to closer scrutiny than in the past. The hope is expressed that the tentative conclusions reached will give rise to more-quantitative analyses from those qualified to undertake such an exercise. Inevitably, the questions asked at the outset give rise to more questions, and the more interesting ones are posed in the context of each conclusion.

Coal is a complex mixture of organic and mineral constituents and is the most abundant resource of fossil energy in the world. In recent years, significant research into dry coal beneficiation has gained much attention, primarily due to the need to improve grades and reduce the environmental contaminants in coal without the use of water, and to achieve this in as cost-effective manner as possible, relative to wet beneficiation processes. This paper seeks to review the application of various electrostatic separators with their process principles, to draw comparisons between different dry beneficiation techniques with specific emphasis on the tribo-electrostatic separation method, and finally to report the results of tribo electrostatic separation conducted on various South African coals. Previous research conducted on Indian, European and American coals has indicated that this technique is likely to lead to significant economic benefit through the reduction of ash content, NOx and more specifically Sox by separating out the liberated Fe-S-bearing minerals prior to utilization. The removal of the latter suite of minerals is also likely to significantly reduce or eliminate the emissions of associated trace elements, including mercury and arsenic. The research results reported in this paper indicate that the rotary tribo-electrostatic process has the potential for significant upgrading of high ash pulverized South African coal. The impact of various operational parameters was investigated and key factors established for the optimum recovery of low ash and low sulphur fine coal.

Effective perimeter control during drilling and blasting is critical not only to blasting results but also to the overall stability of the pit over its entire life span. A pit where perimeter control is not given enough attention when conducting drilling and blasting operations, often experiences over-break or back break beyond final pit wall limits, and therefore has a relatively high probability of failure. Such a pit also becomes unsafe, sometimes not easily accessible, has increased loading costs due to production of oversize, longer cycle times and often problems are encountered when blasting subsequent benches. All these are undesirable consequences, which have negative cost implications. Specialised blasting techniques such as trim blasting and pre-splitting have over the years proved to be effective perimeter control measures. However, the success of these techniques is directly attributable to the time and effort given to the processes. This paper presents results of a project undertaken to monitor, review and optimize the trim blasting and pre-splitting processes at Orapa Diamond Mine in Botswana. The project was specifically incepted to improve the final wall conditions, which continued to deteriorate due to persistent over-break during blasting. The paper also analyses the results obtained against a benchmark of results taken prior to project implementation. Specific blast design parameters which are critical to blasting results were identified as problem areas after auditing of the pre-implementation drilling and blasting practices. These include drill-hole depth, spacing, splitting factor for pre-splits and timing of trim blasts. The impact of different rock types on the results was also studied, and recommendations were made at different phases of the project and results obtained after implementation analysed until optimum results were achieved.

Slope stability is a fundamental part of a successful mining operation. It impacts directly on the safety of personnel and the economics of the mine. The Jwaneng Mine in Botswana is planning a push back of 644m depth in the south east wall. Mining will commence in 2010 and be completed in 2024. This will put the mine in the deep pit category. The mine has invested in extensive geotechnical data gathering and design programs that started as far back as 2003 for the south east wall. The south east wail of Jwaneng Mine is characterized by foliation that dips adversely into the mining faces. The orienta1ion of the foliation is variable due to intense tectonic movements that have also caused the occurrence of faults that are sub-vertical. A considerable amount of information on the characteristics of structural patterns and the rock mass has been collected. This paper presents an overview of the feasibility level geotechnical design that is about to be concluded.

This study investigated the effect of surface roughness on Schmidt rebound hardness (RL). Four different test surfaces of rock samples were studied: natural, ground, cut surfaces, and core samples. There was significant variability of standard deviation based on the RL on the natural surface, which indicated high roughness of the rock surface, whereas surface polishing caused a significant decrease in standard deviation. ISRM and ASTM methods were compared to estimate unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for different testing surfaces. RL obtained from the cut surface was found to be more reliable than those obtained from other testing surfaces for the prediction of UCS; however, regression and ANOVA analyses revealed that the ISRM method gave a more accurate UCS estimation of rocks with highly rough surfaces. It was also shown that RL values obtained from a cut surface were significantly higher than those obtained from core samples. Therefore, a comparison between RL values obtained from core samples and cut surfaces was made based on previous studies. This study statistically showed that estimated UCS values are not statistically significant if Schmidt rebound tests are not performed on similar surfaces. In addition, the mineral grain sizes of the studied rocks, different testing surfaces compared with those in literature, and standard deviation from RL are evaluated and discussed. The Schmidt hammer technique is a rapid, inexpensive, and straightforward method for estimating UCS for preliminary assessment; however, roughness of the surface should be eliminated if variations are shown in the surface rebound hardness.
