Heat capacity measurements were made on sodium bromide ( NaBr ) and sodium iodide ( NaI) in the temperature ranges of 7 ° to 300 ° K and 56 ° to 300 ° K using an adiabatic calorimeter . Smooth values of heat capacity, entropy , enthalpy function , and free- energy function were calculated from the heat capacity data at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K. Entropy and free energy of formation values at 298.15° K also were calculated for the two compounds using entropy values determined in this study and other data reported in the literature . The entropy values calculated at 298.15 ° K were 20.75 ± 0.06 entropy units (eu ) for sodium bromide and 23.55 ± 0.07 eu for sodium iodide .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

The results of the 1921 cooperative experiments conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of North Dakota at the University mining substation plent at Hebron , North Dakota , pointed clearly to certain definite dep ficiencies in the schemes hitherto developed for benefiting and utilizing lignite . First The apparatus used in the carbonizing process or used to produce carbonized lignite suitable for briquetting is too costly , that is , the cost per ton day of residue made is too high . Second - The depreciation of the carbonizing appara tus is too high . Third The carbonizing apparatus can not be operated intermittently without seriously damaging it and impairing its efficiency of performance . Fourth Too little attention has been given to the possibility of using at least a certain percentage of the carbonized lignite directly in suitable stoves and furnaces without briquetting or other treatment . Accordingly , consideration was given to the design of an oven that could be built at a mine without the importation of highly skilled and specially trained construction men , erected at a low first cost , readily kept in a state of repair , operated at a rela tively high capacity and put into operation or shut down at will without seriously damaging the brickwork . The need of such an oven was appreciated also by the University of North Dakota and a cooperative agreement was made to build and operate such an oven during the summer of 1921.

Samples of mine atmospheres collected by Federal coal-mine inspectors during their inspections and investigations of coal mines, in accordance with provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U. S. C., sees. 451-483) are analyzed routinely by chemical methods at Bureau of Mines laboratories. When samples collected in open workings of nongassy coal mines at points not less than 12 inches from the roof, face, or rib contain 0.25 percent or more methane, the act requires the operator, during operation of such mine, to comply with the provisions of sec. 209, Title II, of the act, which pertain to gassy mines. The methane con-tents of such samples are determined by a physical method based on infrared absorption spectrometry to provide an independent check on analytical results obtained by chemical methods. This information circular describes the equipment and procedures used by the Bureau for determining low concentrations of methane in coal mine atmospheres by infrared absorption spectrometry. "This study analyzed laboratory comminution techniques for respirable mine dust generation and the properties of the resulting dusts. It was the objective of the study to determine the suitability of the resulting dusts in reflecting the properties of natural airborne dust. This paper deals specifically with the amount of contamination introduced into the generated dust as a result of abrasion when using nine different grinding methods. The analysis was made by comparing the content of 25 chemical elements in the lab-generated dusts with the same elements in the airborne coal mine dusts. It was found that all the lab-generated dusts possessed contamination but that several methods produced smaller percentages of contamination and that the residence time in the grinding device was an important factor in the contamination levels. INTRODUCTIONDust in the atmosphere is a health hazard and a major source of occupational diseases in the coal mining industry (Anon., 1980; Merchant, Boehlecke, and Picket-Hamer, 1986). It has been shown that coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is directly related to the inhalation and accumulation of respirable coal dust in coal miners' lungs. In order to effectively protect coal workers from coal dusts, we must have a clear understanding of dust properties including dust generation and dust-lung reaction mechanisms. This requires extensive biomedical research. Dust related research often requires large samples of respirable coal dusts to be collected, either for repeated experiments or stored for future reference. Unfortunately, current sampling instruments are not able to meet this demand. Ali a result, laboratory-generated coal dust ls frequently used as a substitute for coal mine dust in biomedical and other research applications. Now, the questions are how close the characteristics of laboratory-generated dusts are to those of mining-generated dusts and which equipment is moat appropriate for research dust production in the laboratory . These are some of the interests of this research project. The primary objective of this project was to find a laboratory technique which can generate coal dusts possessing properties similar to coal mine dust with respect to particle size distribution, chemical composition, and particle shape and morphology. However, this paper will focus only on the chemical compositions of the prepared dust samples and try to identify the sources of chemical contamination from various size reduction processes."

It is recognized that the determination of electrical resistivity of the earth within a given area may furnish information concerning the location of certain mineralized strata of economic importance. Present knowledge of the electrical resistivity of the various rock formations is almost nil, and the geophysicist who is detailed to make a survey of an area without any data as to the relative resistivity of the underlying rocks is greatly handicapped. Such surveys are usually made within areas known to contain mineral deposits to aid in locating desirable points for drilling. Usually these areas have been prospected by diamond drilling, and drill cores of the various rocks and ores are usually obtainable. Were it possible to make resistivity tests in a laboratory of the drill cores or from pieces of the rocks and ore within an area before attempting a field survey, this would indicate not only the advisability for such a survey but would aid considerably in the interpretation of the results of such a survey. To be of most value a definite method should be used for all such tests, and as yet such a method has not been established.

The vibration levels of the heavy machines used in surface mining are much greater than for vehicles used on highways. In order to assure the proper functioning of electronic equipment placed on the surface mining vehicles, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted a program of field measurements to define their vibration environment. The information in this report is for a class of vehicle that has a blade for scraping and wheels with rubber tires. The statistical information derived from these measurements can be used as a basis for laboratory testing to qualify equipment for a surface mining vehicle of this class. The envelope that would encompass 99 pct of the vibrations encountered in normal operations is presented for each location on the vehicle. The five locations for which data were recorded are the floor of the cab, the engine, the frame, the drive train (gear, differential, and torque converter), and the axle. Tabulated data are provided for those who wish to use a different probability level. The appropriate test profile for the laboratory testing can be determined from the information presented in this report.

Only limited work has been reported in the literature about the use of latex in soil. Unisol 91 2,3 (a 9:l oil-latex emulsion made b International Synthetic Rubber Company) and Phil1ips Petroset4 geotechnic emulsions are surface soil stabilizers which penetrate a maximum of two inches, but do not reduce permeability. Diamond Alkali 5 found that styrene-butadiene rubber latex as a one percent latex-soil mixture reduced permeability to 0.7 from 21 feet per year under a head of twenty feet of brine. We have found no literature reference for use of latex as sealant at depth in the soil, although asphalt has been applied at depth using civil engineering methods6,7. Most of the materials investigated as soil sealants in the present work were latexes, although some studies were also conducted with a variety of inorganic and organic chemicals. Of the latexes tested, most were rubber but a few were plastic, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. Sealants examined in this investigation are listed individually in Table I with supplier, code number, and other pertinent information. The materials consisted of the following general classes with additional details as indicated: 1.Anionic latexes: a. styrene-butadiene copolymers and terpolymers (SBR) b. butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (Paracrils®) c. polyvinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers (WC) d. ethylene-propylene terpolymer e. vinyl acetate homopolymers and copolymers (VA) f. acrylics (acrylate copolymers) g. 2-chlorobutadiene homopolymer (chloroprene) (prepared specially as cationic material coagulated by soil). 2. Water Soluble polymers: a. polyvinyl ether b. methylcellulose c. polyethyleneimines d. polyacrylic acid homopolymer e. copolymers and terpolymers with acrylic acid types (water soluble as sodium or ammonium salts) f. alginates g. monomers (for polymerization in soil, e.g. acrylamide)

Study of the ignition of firedamp by explosives and the phenomena that underlie it is one of the long-term investigations of the Bureau of Mines. This report is the third in e series by the Explosives Branch summarizing the progress made at Bruceton in this study. The first paper described preliminary work on small, carefully controlled cannon shots the second discussed the results of suspended shots.5/ In this paper, experiments are described and interpreted that extend and support the concept of ignition presented previously. Trichloroethylene (CHC1CC12) is an important solvent for fats , resins , bitumens, rubber , sulfur , and phosphorus . It is used extensively in drycleaning because of its low order of combustibility and has recently been proposed as an inhalation anaesthetic . Its physical properties have been described by Carlisle and Levine . It is usually considered a noninflammable material ; however , substances that are noninflammable when mixed with air are not necessarily noninflammable when mixed with oxygen . Thus , Hewer's statement that " Trichloroethylene*** is not inflammable under any circumstances , nor will its vapor explode when mixed in any proportion with air , oxygen, or nitrous oxide , " requires qualification , especially in anesthesia, where pure oxygen may at times be substituted for air , This report gives the results of tests made to determine the inflammability of trichloroethylene in various mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen . The trichloroethylene used was Eastman's No. 1300. The boiling point was given as 86 ° to 87 °C . The specific gravity and refractive index of the sample measured in this laboratory were , respectively, 1.45 and 1.4759 at 25 °C .

Calorimetric determinations of low-temperature heat capacities and the standard enthalpy of formation were made by the Bureau of Mines for aluminum sulfide, A12S3. The standard entropy (S°), enthalpy of formation (?Hf°), and calculated Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) at 298.15 K are 27.93±0.05 call deg-mole, -155.6±0.9 kcal/mole, and -153.0±1.0 kcal/mole, respectively.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, explored the Crowell fluorite mine by core drilling in 1945. Claims investigated are in sec. 14, T. 12 S. R. 47 E., M. D. B. & M., in southern rye County, Nev., about 5 miles east of 'Beatty.The twelve holes drilled by the Bureau totaled 3,661 feet. During 1945 the mine operator drove extensive exploration drifts, in part to verify results of the Bureau's work. The drilling program was designed to test for extensions of ore bodies known in the mine.The Crowell mine has shipped Ore to steel plants on the west coast for the past 20 years. During the war this market called for all the fluorite the mine could produce, but previously there were periods when it was difficult to sell ore or concentrates.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This report contains heat-content values for hexagonal crystalline germanium dioxide between 298.15° and 1,350° K., and for germanium dioxide glass between 298.15° and 1,800° K. experimentally determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines. No similar data for these substances are to be found in the literature. The heat-content and corresponding entropy-increment data are presented both in tabular form and by equations. Free energy of formation values are estimated for germanium dioxide glass at 298.15° and 1,800° K.

This chapter analyses the parameters influencing initial design of communication systems, for new mines and upgrading existing systems. Paragraph 5.2 outlines those variables that must be taken into account during the design stages of a new wired phone system. Recommended features, general requirements, and how they can be implemented are treated in this section. Paragraph 5.3 describes ways of improving or extending the range of trolley carrier phone systems and pager phone systems already installed in the mine. 5.2 New Phone System Design The task of designing an adequate communication, control, and monitoring system for an underground mine must be addressed on a system basis. In addition to insuring that effective voice communication is established, any new system should take into account present and future requirements of remote control and monitoring functions. Chapter 4 illustrated the drastic savings in response time that can be realized when remote control and monitoring are integrated into the overall communication system. The importance of including control and monitoring in the overall design plan for any system cannot be overemphasized. Because each mine is unique, and thus usually has its own special operating characteristics and communication requirements, there is no such thing as "the one best system" to meet the requirements of all mines. The optimum communication, control, and monitoring system for a mine must be one that has been tailored to meet the special requirements of that particular mine. Factors that must be considered during system design include- a. Type of mine and mining methods (low- or high-seam coal, deep hardrock mine, stope caving, longwall, room and pillar, etc.). b. Maximum number of working sections. c. Expected mine growth rate and eventual maximum size. d. Haulage methods (tracked trolley, diesel, belt, etc.). e. Underground power distribution system (dc, ac, or both). f. Features desired (two-way radio paging, private line capability for emergency use, etc.). g. Redundant or backup systems for use during outages of the normal system. Although no two mines are alike, the following items have been established as the main characteristics desired for any underground communication system: 1. Multiple Communication Paths to Outside--the objective here is to give all telephones a second method of communicating with the surface. 2. Audible Emergency Signaling--the communication system provides the main means of alerting miners during emergencies. The system should include means to broadcast distinct audible signals for emergency signaling. Initiation of these signals should probably be controlled from. a central outside point, such as a surface control room. 3. Emergency Override--provisions should be included to permit any conversation to be overridden with emergency communication. 4. Selective Area Page--as mines grow larger it is apparent that the entire telephone system paging mode need not be activated each time a call is initiated. When the general area of a

The Chestatee mine is one of several well known pyrite deposits in Georgia that are reputed to carry appreciable quantities of copper with the ore. The deposit is? in Lumpkin County on the Chestatee River, 6 miles northeast of Dahlonega (fig. 1). Old records and reports indicated the probable existence of an extensive unmined ore body, but the mine is inaccessible at present. The Bureau of Mines, after studying old maps and records, decided to cor8-drill along the strike of the lense beyond the limits of the indicated old workings in an attempt to extend the possible reserves. The advantageous location of the property indicates that it could become an economic source of pyrite to be used for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Iron sinter resulting from the roasting of the ores could be sold at a premium in the Birmingham, Ala., area, and the copper content could be extracted to help replace the nation's depleted resources of this metal.

The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.5 and 3 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year product Lon period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 Indexes. Initial capital investment is $33.8 million for the 1.5-MM-tpy mine and $61 million for the 3-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $52.5 and $94.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $34.87 and $31.31 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $12.06 and $10.94 per ton for the 1.5- and 3-MM-tpy mines.

During World War II , a critical shortage of domestic abrasive corundum developed . Late in 1944 , the shortage became so acute that it was deemed advisable to investigate certain low-grade corundum prospects in Madison and Gallatin Counties , Montana . The Gallatin , the Bozeman , and the Bear Trap deposits were the principal ones investigated . The Bear Trap deposit was examined by E. W. Newman and Robert S. O'Brien , engineers of the Bureau of Mines , in August 1944. Exploration was started in October 1944. Field work was completed late in the spring of 1945 . report presents the data obtained from the exploration .

All known resources within the four proposed RARE II additions to the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness in northwestern California occur in the Gig Butte-Shinbone study area (fig. 1). No mineral resources are Figure 1.--NEAR HERE. known in the East Fork, Murphy blade, or Wilderness Contiguous units. About 2,400 tons (2,177 t) of subeconomic manganese resources averaging 9.5 percent manganese have been estimated at the Blue Jay Mine in the Big Butte-Shinbone unit. In addition about 9,700 tons (8,793 t) of subeconomic chromium-nickel-cobalt resources in thin laterite soil at the Grubstake Prospect contain about 1.27 percent chromium oxide, 0.45 percent nickel, and 0.03 percent cobalt. Adjacent Ultramafic rock outcrops have pods averaging 2.5 percent chromium oxide (Cr203); one pod contains about 40 tons (36 t) of indicated subeconomic resources.

Fiber-optic technology is progressing rapidly, including the development of fiber-optic sensors for many applications. These sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity, light weight, small size, high bandwidth, and freedom from electromagnetic influences. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of fiber-optic technology to monitor mine atmospheres. This report describes a methane monitor based on differential absorption of infrared light. The monitor can detect methane concentrations as low as 0.2 vol pct as far away as 2 km via fiber-optic cable. The upper range is 100 vol pct methane. Since the system requires no electrical power within the mine, it is intrinsically safe.

The Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and in certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous Bureau of Mines publication now are a necessary complement to the chart, More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier version.
