In a recent report3/ the authors presented a rapid method of calculating, by means of a desk calculator, the future performance of oil reservoirs in which the motivating agent was gas. The accuracy of the method was tested by data obtained from an electronic computer. Because of the accuracy obtained for the limited number of calculations performed, considerable interest has been expressed in the electronic computer program used to obtain the comparative data by an analytical solution. Accordingly, the computer procedures for the analytical solution are presented in this report. In an earlier report, 4/ a reservoir appraisal procedure was published in which an iterative method was used. Many requests were received for the computer program used to obtain the values given in that paper. That program, with some modifications, also is presented in this report. The modifications are given because of the progress that his been made in computers, and because much of the program for the analytical solution is usable for the iterative procedure.

Objective As mines become safer and disasters fewer, a time may come when no employees in the mining industry have any practical experience in managing a mine emergency. To fill an emerging gap in mine emergency response training, a multidisciplinary team of researchers and computer programmers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has developed an intervention for mining personnel who would be in leadership positions in the command center during emergencies. It is called MERITS, a computer-based emergency simulation exercise. MERITS is short for "Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation." It provides trainees an opportunity to gain command center experience during a simulated underground coal mine emergency. MERITS allows trainees to practice information gathering, situation assessment, decision-making, and coordination skills without risk to personnel or property. Individuals representing mine emergency response personnel, various State safety officials, and private mine management from three States have participated in MERITS training. What Is MERITS? MERITS is an extension of previous work that compiled a knowledge base relevant to mine disaster management via interviews, analysis of literature, reviews of past events, and observations of mock mine disasters. Findings from prior research found a need for an alternative method of command center training. This new computer simulation is being used to train emergency command center personnel to effectively manage an underground mine fire. Modeled after training simulations developed for other industries (e.g., to address nuclear accidents, chemical spills, evacuations, etc.), MERITS simulates underground and surface events related to the disaster. It exposes the user to events that typically occur during a mine emergency, such as lack of information and miscommunication. It also presents trainees with issues that must be addressed, such as making provisions for briefing news media and victims' families, ordering needed supplies, interfacing with Government enforcement agencies, and housing mine rescue teams. The outcome of the scenario is determined by the users' decisions and their emergency response plans. Field Results Field testing of MERITS was conducted with eight full-day training sessions at four different locations in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. These field tests benefited from the knowledge and experience of State of Pennsylvania inspection officials, representatives of the United Mine Workers of America(UMWA), and private mine management who served as trainees for the MERITS training sessions. Trainees self-reported an average of20 years of work experience in the mining industry. All trainees had participated in Mine Emergency Response Development (MERD) training exercises, and many had been involved in real mine emergencies. Trainee evaluation of the MERITS program is summarized below: •Twenty-six of the 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them know how to prepare for a real emergency. •Twenty-five of the 27 trainees believed that the storyline for the MERITS simulation was either "very realistic" or "realistic." •All 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them learn how to better handle a real emergency. •None of the 27 trainees stated that they were bored during the simulation. After the initial field tests, MERITS was refined and retested during training sessions for individuals from State agencies, the UMWA, and private industry. Mining personnel from underground coal and underground stone mines participated and responded positively to the learning experience. The Bureau of Mines determined the factors involved in the corrosion of starting sheets used in the production of electrolytic zinc with the ultimate purpose of adapting zinc starting sheets to commercial practice . Under present practice , zinc is electrodeposited on aluminum cathodes and subsequently stripped for melting . The use of zinc instead of aluminum would eliminate the need to strip the deposit , thereby reducing the cost of handling and melting it , but zinc has not been suitable because it was too vulnerable to the corrosive attack of the electrolyte . Serious attack was found to be limited to the areas of the cathodes situated immediately above the surface of the electrolyte and to re - entrant corners . It was possible to avoid solution - level corrosion by immersing the starting sheets completely , exposing only a relatively heavy suspension member to solution - level attack . Zinc starting sheets could be made as reliable as aluminum and could be continued in residence for periods up to 39 days . Periods as long as a week were feasible under conditions similar to those found in commercial practice . A test of zirconium as a starting - sheet material showed that it promoted corrosion of the deposit to a lesser extent than aluminum and that the deposit adhered less tenaciously . These two properties lend themselves to the development of ways to strip deposits mechanically from zirconium starting sheets . Titanium was unsuitable for use as a starting - sheet material .

This report presents a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of technical factors related to the production of special carbon and tar from selected Wyoming coals. Certain Wyoming high-volatile bituminous and subbituminous coals were processed in bench-scale apparatus to determine potential carbonization yields and in pilot plant retorts to produce sufficient char and tar for testing. These tests have shown that a critical selection of coal is necessary when the coal is processed for a specialized carbon. Generally high yields of tar are obtained from low-temperature carbonization of Wyoming high-volatile bituminous and subbituminous coals, and the yield of tar usually increases with increase in rank within this range of coals. The production and evaluation of industrial carbons from Wyoming coals by using pilot plant and bench-scale techniques is part of the continuous program of upgrading western coals. It has been found that: 1. Most Wyoming coals are nonagglomerating and may be carbonized in fluidized systems. Chars produced in pilot plant retorts at low temperatures contain about 17 to 23 pct, residual volatile matter and are easily ignited. These chars appear suitable as power plant fuel. The tar-plus-light-oil yields range from 14 to 40 gal./ton of raw coal processed. 2. Wyoming high-volatile coals produce a slightly smaller and somewhat weaker coke than currently mined Western United States high-volatile coals used commercially as blending stock in metallurgical coke production.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) awarded? a contract to Foster-Miller, Inc. to develop guidelines for designing, constructing, stocking, and maintaining rescue chambers in underground mines. This report develops information and recommendations which could be used by a mine operator who desired to install a rescue chamber. Volume I covers the following major areas: atmospheric life support, configuration and construction, chamber location, power and lighting, equipment and supplies, communications, and psychological aspects and training. Volume II contains the following appendices: History of Barricading, Chamber Pressuriztion Considerations, Diffusional Infiltration of Gas, Compressed Air Storage, Location Examples, and Psychological Aspects.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of gamma radiation on materials and chemical reactions to obtain information that could be of value in modern metallurgical practices . Various combinations of metals and their ores and compounds were irradiated in attempts to effect reactions that might be applicable in the extraction and separation of metal values from minerals and The types of reactions studied included complexing of salts , decomposition of hydrated salts , metal chlorination reactions , leaching of ores and minerals , halogen exchange , and various reducing reactions . All irradiations were performed at the Materials Testing Reactor Gamma Facility of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Idaho Falls , Idaho . Spent fuel elements were utilized as the source of the gamma radiation . Some irradiation - induced changes , ranging from mere color change to participation in chemical reactions , were noted . The greatest value of these investigations , however , was the experience acquired , which should be valuable in future explorations of similar nature .

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the fundamental behavior of electric arcs in electric furnace operations. The electric arc is a poorly understood phenomenon. If the arc in a steelmaking furnace can be more carefully controlled, it should be possible to increase heat transfer to the melt, reducing both electrical and acoustical noise. As a first step toward a better understanding of the are, voltage and current signals from operating furnaces were analyzed. The results of the initial analysis show that instrumentation used in monitoring and controlling furnaces, such as meters and strip-chart recorders, gives incomplete or erroneous information to the operator and therefore leads to less than optimal control. Advanced instrumentation and analysis techniques, such as the waveform analysis used in these investigations, can improve the understanding of operation and the control of electric furnaces. This report describes the instrumentation and the numerical analysis methods used and compares these methods with standard metering and recording techniques.

Unfortunate occurrences resulting in injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property by explosion, fire, and other mishaps during shaft sinking focused the attention of the Bureau of Mines on the need for safety standards For such operations. Information Circular 7810 was published to meet that need. The current revision updates and replaces IC 7810. Several States have some rules and regulations applicable to local conditions, and several Bureau publications (including some now out of print) cover the hazards that may be encountered in shaft sinking. Certain requirements of the Federal Mine Safety Code and Federal Coal Mine Safety Act may be applied, but there are no definite, uniform standards that will guide those desiring to sink a shaft safely and bring about uniform safety inspections.

Abrasives are essential to the manufacture of munitions - airplanes, gas, shells, tanks, and in fact every product that involves metal forming or finishing. An indication of the importance of abrasives in the national defense and aid-to-Britain programs is the close peace-time correlation between demand for abrasives and automobile production, which in recent years has consumed more than 35 percent of the total output of abrasives. Unprecedented demands on the abrasives industry are forecast by the rapid expansion in airplane output, tie increased mechanization of all armed forces, and the consequent speeding up not only of the factories where finished munitions are made but also of the steel mills and other factories were additional large quantities of abrasives are needed for snagging or rough-grinding semifinished products before they can be used by the fabricators. A recent survey by the artificial abrasives manufacturers indicates that they can readily increase their output 75 percent compared with the previous peak of 1937 without building new plants. By overhauling production schedules, their maximum production possible could be increased to 182 percent of the 1937 output, and the nature of the industry is such that plant capacity could be increased rapidly if need therefor should arise. No figures on the estimated requirements for abrasives in 1941 or 1942 have as yet been compiled, but the industry feels that it can meet demands as they develop.

VARIABLES OF composition and environment affecting storage stability of gasoline-type fuels were studied, utilizing radioactive tracers and other analytical techniques. Changes in gasoline composition brought about by aging were determined and correlated with gum formation. The amounts of reaction of selected gasoline components, measured by radioactive tracers, were determined in a gasoline-type blend and in a mixture of 17 selected pure gasoline components. The data show that sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds, polycyclics, and olefins enter into gum-forming reactions. Certain sulfur and nitrogen compounds were found to be most reactive in the gum-forming process. Results of this study indicate that the aromatic constituents of gasolines may contribute substantially and directly to gum formation. A mixture of tetralin and indan-type compounds is reactive, and this mixture appears to be the main aromatic portion entering into gum formation. A secondary but significant amount of naphthalenes also appears to have reacted in the gum-forming process. Analyses of the sulfm compounds in a fresh and an aged fuel indicated that elemental sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, thiols, sulfides, and disulfides were depleted during aging, but thiophenes and residual sulfur compounds were not depleted by fuel deterioration.

For many years , it has been the common practice at most copper mines to recover copper in solution in effluent mine water by precipitating the copper with scrap iron.4/ The technique employed varies from simply throwing scrap iron or tin cans into the waste ditches to passing the water through elaborate launder systems containing detinned scrap and baled cans . In general , a considerable amount of low - cost copper has been recovered that otherwise would have been lost . Iron consumption usually varies from 1 to 1-1/2 pounds of iron for each pound of copper recovered . The grade of the precipitate may be as much as 90 percent copper.4/ ,5/ Where the consumption of iron is materially greater , its cost is likely to be the determining factor of profit . In times of emergency, when the demand for scrap iron for remelting increases the cost of the iron sharply, and the supply of tin cans is not large enough to meet requirements , recovery of the copper might not be economical . The three principal reactions that take place when an acid mine water containing iron and copper salts in solution is brought into contact with metallic iron are : (1 ) Copper is precipitated and an equivalent amount of iron is dissolved , CuSO4 + Fe Cu + FeSO4 ; ( 2) ferric salts are reduced to ferrous salts , Fe2 (SO4 ) 3 + Fe = 3FeSO4 ; and (3) the free acid in the solution reacts. with metallic iron to produce ferrous sulfate , H2SO4 + Fe = H2 + FeSO4 . = Because of the reported high.consumption of iron (5 to 6 pounds per pound of copper precipitated ), when copper in water from the Hornet mine of the Mountain Copper Co. ( California ) was precipitated upon scrap iron , a series of tests was made to determine . the . optimum treatment, time , and consumption of iron .

This report discusses the construction and use of an all-pressure psy- chrometric chart in which the requirements of simplicity of appearance and absolute accuracy have been waived, to a certain extent, to provide for the rapid determination of psychrometric data and for the rapid solution of air- conditioning problems of major interest to the mining industry. Many mines in which air-conditioning problems are important are situated at elevations far above sea level and embrace great differences in elevation - in excess of 8,000 feet in certain mines → throughout their airflow circuits. Under these conditions, the effects of variations in the pressure of the at- mosphere upon the physical properties of the mixture of air and water vapor of which it is composed are considerable and should be taken into account in the solution of problems. The simple types of psychrometric charts in common use, such as the Carrier, Bulkeley, Hill, and Goff (American Society of Heat- ing and Ventilating Engineers Guide), are not generally suitable, in that they are drawn for a single barometric pressure 29,92 inches mercury.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator's awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. Patent Status NIOSH has a patent pending on this device entitled "Cable-Load¬Sensing Device." This report covers the investigation of the MacArthur copper deposit and several adjacent claims in the Mason mining district; Lyon County, Nev. (fig. 1). As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was begun first on the MacArthur claims. Work was done later on some adjacent claims in the immediate area, as shown by figure 2. Field work was begun by the Bureau of Mines on January 16, 1950, and completed on October 25, 1950. Eight diamond-drill holes were completed, for an aggregate of 3,414 linear feet, Analyses were made of' each drilling interval. The report includes a brief history of the district and a description of the deposits and of the work done by the Bureau of Mines.

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7516, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 to aid in estimating investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from. 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, Supplemental Bibliography on Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was prepared to cover the area from September 1948 through June 1952.

A system capable of monitoring mine electrical power systems and detecting impending component .failure could significantly improve power system safety and reduce unscheduled equipment downtime. Such monitoring would require a method of evaluating electrical parameters, calculated from terminal values, for indications of component deterioration. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has targeted electrical failure of squirrel cage induction motors and examined the use of mathematical models to aid in this evaluation. The initial stage of this work is complete, and has produced polynomial networks called adaptive learning networks (ALN's) that can detect and quantify winding insulation leakage simulated on laboratory motors. In this modeling process, empirical data from laboratory motors were used to select the electrical parameters most significant for assessing? motor conditions, and mathematical expressions relating these parameters to simulated deterioration were formed. ALN's developed thus far can process readily measured motor terminal information and quantify power and current levels of laboratory-simulated leakage to within 1% and 3% of full load values, respectively, for motors in the 10-to 150-hp size range. The next stage of this research is validation of these ALN's for actual motor failures; this stage is currently underway, using accelerated life testing of laboratory motors.

In broadening the utility of spectrochemical methods 9f analysis of ore samples 3,4/ a procedure employ in the total energy method, has been adapted to determination of silver in ores. Silver is the first element in group I of the periodic table to be studied in the Bureau of Mines program. Two silver lines in the spectrum, Ag X\ 3280.683 and 3382.89lR were used in the study, and the problems that had to be overcome were: (1) Influence of extraneous elements on line intensities, (2) preparation of standard curves, and (3) improvement in equipment and technique to increase accuracy. Sodium, potassium, sulfur, selenium, iron, cobalt, and nickel yielded low intensities and hence low results, particularly on the samples high in silver, but addition of 60 percent or more of lime counteracted these effects. One calibration curve must be used for samples low in silver and other for those high in silver. The chocks with fire assaying were close enough for preliminary or exploratory investigations, and the method is much more rapid.

This paper, describing the operation of the Gifford Hill & Co. plant at Hoot Spur near Texarkana, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing gravel and sand throughout the United States. These tapers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total costs might not be advisable in some instances yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The plant described combines some features of dredging and some of dry-pit operation, as material is excavated in a dry pit with a drag line, hauled to the plant in standard-gage cars, and then pumped. This operation should be of special interest to operators whose deposits contain a large quantity of clay.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has tested cyanide leaching for recovery of palladium (Pd) from spent petroleum processing catalysts. Three different catalyst samples were supplied by a spent-catalyst processor. These catalysts consisted of a zeolite base and contained 0.4 to 0.7 pct Pd. During alkaline cyanide leaching, the catalysts exhibited ion-exchange properties due to their zeolite matrices. Hydrogen ions were released from the zeolite in exchange for sodium ions in solution, resulting in a significant decrease in solution pH. This could present a safety hazard because of the potential for release of toxic hydrogen cyanide gas. A pretreatment step where the catalysts were contacted with a 1.0M sodium hydroxide solution was found to prevent the pH shift from occurring. Following the sodium hydroxide pretreatment, two stages of leaching at 160 °C with solution containing 1 pct sodium cyanide and 0.1[M] sodium hydroxide gave at least 75 and up to 95 pct Pd recovery. The Pd was quantitatively recovered from the leach solution by thermal decomposition in an autoclave at 250°C for 1 h. The Pd content of the precipitate was over 50 pct. Thermal decomposition also decreased the total cyanide content of the barren solution to less than 0.2 mg/L. The catalyst leach residues passed the Federal Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure and the California Waste Extraction Test, indicating that landfill disposal of the leach residues would be acceptable.

Oxidation procedures based on the chlorine-hypochlorite system were investigated for improving gold recovery from carbonaceous gold ores. The oxidation pretreatment prior to cyanidation was accomplished by (1) addition of sodium hypochlorite to ore pulp, (2) by addition of chlorine to ore pulp, and (3) by generation of hypochlorite in situ by electrolysis of a brine solution used to pulp the ore. Gold extraction of 90 pct was achieved by cyanidation of carbonaceous ore that had been pretreated with 20 Ib per ton sodium hypochlorite at 50° C for 4 hours. Similarly, pretreatment of the ore pulp with 35 1b chlorine per ton at 24° to 30° C and 15 hours reaction time resulted in 89-pct gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Concomitant studies showed that electrolyzing the pulp prepared with a brine solution was equally as effective as electrolyzing hypochlorite and chlorine for oxidizing carbonaceous ore constituents that are deleterious to cyanidation. Gold extraction of 90 pct was obtained by electrolysis when 275 lb of are was treated at 200 amp for 7 hours in an 8-to 10-pct salt solution. Power consumption was in the range of 60 kwhr per ton.
