1962 was the second year of recovery from the mild 1960-61 recession. The year-to-year gain in constant dollar gross national product, our most comprehensive measure of the country's economic performance, was 6.0 percent (from $447.7 billion in 1961 to $474.8 billion in 1962). The unemployment rate declined from 6.7 percent to 5.6 percent. Although it was a good year, there were still unused resources of labor and capital which implied that the economy was operating below its potential. The year-to-year change in the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) index of industrial production of 7.6 percent masked the fact that more than one-third of the growth took place within 196L The monthly index rose only 4.8 percent during 1962, from 114.3 in January to 117.8 in September. The fact that the economy as shown by the industrial index, rose rapidly in the first half of the year only to remain on a plateau of 119-120 during the second half, led some people to fear an imminent downward turn. This did not occur. Neither production nor consumption of mineral fuels advanced as fast as the total economy. But consumption showed more gain than production, 5 percent compared with somewhat less than 4 percent. Production of both crude oil and natural gas reached new highs while bituminous coal production was the highest in 5 years.

Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. Use of these low-flow inertisation equipment and methods has been successful in proactively rendering gob areas inert and has the ability to inert the entire mine workings. Fluorphlogopite mica was synthesized from inexpensive and abundant olivine, clay, feldspar, and sand (plus K2SiF6). The raw materials were melted in crucibles and in an internal resistance electric furnace. The melts yielded >95 percent mica. The major difficulty encountered was incomplete settling of the highly dispersed ferroalloy. This problem was not completely solved. Reducing agents tried in melts of 300 to 400 pounds were carbon, silicon, and silicon carbide. Carbon slowly reduced the iron of the raw materials, with much fuming. Silicon apparently was oxidized ahead of the melting and was ineffective under the conditions obtained. By far the best reducing agent was silicon carbide. With silicon carbide, fuming did not occur and ionic iron content of the mica flake approached 0 percent. However, even with SiC, the highly dispersed globular iron did not completely separate from the mica portion. The fluorphlogopite made during this investigation should be suitable for metallurgical use. A byproduct ferroalloy containing about 5 percent nickel, 3 to 5 percent chromium, and some cobalt was obtained. Because of the highly dispersed metallic ferroalloy, the mica was not deemed suitable for electrical or electronic uses.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to evaluate the production of high-purity H3P04 by HCl digestion and solvent extraction. Both batch and bench-scale continuous tests were made. Western phosphate rock concentrates were acidulated with HCI, and the digestion liquors were processed by solvent extraction. Phosphoric acid was extracted with isoamyl alcohol and recovered from the organic extract by contact with an NH4F solution. This solution was fractionally distilled to yield high-purity H3P04. The raffinate from solvent extraction was treated with lime to precipitate CaF2, which was subjected to steam pyrolysis to generate HF. This method was successful in recovering 95 pet of the phosphate and 80 pct of the fluoride contained in the concentrates.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the cycle of secondary gold to determine the quantity of gold not being recovered from scrap, and to identify areas for research to increase the supply of gold from scrap. Secondary gold in 1967 was estimated to be 2.4 million troy ounces; this excludes secondary gold which is recycled within consuming plants. Firms contacted included consumers using about 41 percent of the gold in 1967, And refiners that recovered about 90 percent of the secondary gold. Results of the study indicate that loss of gold is small, and refiners and consumers are accelerating programs designed to reduce recovery costs. With the increasing generation of low-grade industrial scrap, research is needed to improve present recovery techniques and to develop methods to accelerate the flow of secondary gold back to supply.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. In gasifying pulverized coal with steam and oxygen, the particle size of the coal fed to a gasifier should be as small as economically possible. A potential way to achieve this advantage is to reduce the particle size of the coal by passing the coal-steam mixture at high velocity through a heated tube coil before the mixture enters the gasifier. To evaluate this method the Federal Bureau of Mines flashed coal-water slurries in externally heated metallic tube coils to determine the extent of size reduction. The first of two different laboratory-scale apparatus reduced the average particle diameter of subbituminous C coal from 190 to 110 microns at an outlet velocity of 330 feet per second (f.p.s.). At the same outlet velocity, a second apparatus reduced the average particle diameter from 250 to 140 microns. An increase in velocity produced more finely divided coal, but variation in temperature and pressure had no effect except as they affected velocity. Virtually the same size reduction was noted for five ranks of coal at equal velocities. The rate of increase in particle-size reduction with increase in velocity decreased with a decrease in particle size. The pulverizing mechanism was concluded to be abrasion of the particles with each other and with the tube wall.

Reduce respirable dust exposure of workmen operating auger-type continuous mining machines. Approach: An auger miner was fitted with an exhaust system which draws dust laden air through a [scruber] and discharges it behind the line curtain. How It Works: Dusty air is drawn into the space above the coal conveyor and through a scrubber, by two fans mounted side by side above the conveyor. Exhaust from the fans passes through a duct to the side of the auger miner, and into tubing that runs back and into the air return passage formed by the line curtain. See Figure 1. Of the 5,000 cubic feet per minute of air normally entering the working place, 4/5 is drawn out through the dust exhaust system. The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow in by the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.

The Bureau of Mines, in connection with the investigations of war minerals it conducted, examined the graphite deposits of this country, studied the methods of mining and preparation used, and sought to devise more efficient methods for the preparation of domestic graphite, and to standardize the quality of the product. The graphite investigations covered three general phases, as follows: 1. An examination of the deposits in Alabama and other States, and a survey of the methods of mining and preparation used. In this connection methods of sampling and analysis were noted and experiments made to determine a standard method of sampling and a, rapid but accurate method of analysis. 2. Experimental work on the concentration and refining of domestic crucible graphite to improve the quality of the product and to lessen waste. 3. Experimental work in crucible manufacture to determine the properties of domestic flake and the maximum proportions that might be used without impairing the quality of the crucibles. This work was accompanied by photomicrographic study of crucible structure.

The existing computer programs for the simulation of ventilation systems under normal ventilation conditions are reviewed and a suitable program for including the influence of mine fires is selected. New program parts are written for the consideration of methane productions in coal mines, heat and gas productions of mine fires, temperature and air composition changes in ventilation systems, and the ventilation forces resulting from the latter. Other program parts are provided for the detection of danger zones and reversed air currents and for the inclusion of recirculated air currents in the network analysis. Existing program and new program parts are combined. The resulting new program can be used for a multitude of assignments. It is designed for the practical ventilation engineer and should be applicable to all types of ventilation emergency plans, in particular mine fire plans. The organization of the program and its mathematical basis are described. A FORTRAN IV listing and several flow diagrams are included. Eight executed examples are discussed, input and output for these examples explained. Storage requirements and execution times are estimated.

"INTRODUCTION The highly mechanized character of modern warfare makes steel the most vital raw material. The shortage of steel scrap in the United States is forcing the use of increased quantities of pig iron in steel manufacture, so that the rate of pig-iron output will continue to be the controlling factor in steel production. 5/ At the same time, the construction of new blast furnaces is limited both by time and the amount of strategic material available. Under such circumstances, every effort must be made to attain and then maintain maximum pig-iron output from the equipment now in use.When forcing a blast furnace to the ultimate in production the highest standards for quality and uniformity of the coke must be maintained. In view of these facts, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Coordinator for War, is surveying the coke industry to study the various steps in producing coke of higher quality and greater uniformity. 6/ The engineers conducting the survey are visiting key men in coke-oven and blast-furnace organizations to determine, first, the major and most common problems in coke production and use; and, second, the best and quickest method for solving them. Various operators have made good progress in solving individual problems, and a Nation-wide exchange of information among them will make possible widespread adoption of the best practices. It is the purpose, of the survey and reports such as this preliminary one to facilitate such exchange of information. As an outgrowth of the survey, it was soon revealed that many operators could be helped by cooperation with various Government agencies, particularly to procure suitable coals, minor additions to equipment facilities, and tests on certain properties of coal or coke, or specific advice concerning the operation of various types of equipment. The machinery and organization necessary for securing this cooperation have been set up as a part of this work."

VOLUME I Volume I of this three-volume report is the result of development of a comprehensive, coordinated approach to site data-acquisition activities to produce key plans and reports during the evaluation and development of a surface coal mine. A logic diagram illustrates activities in the planning and decision-making process from exploration through post-mining monitoring. The report briefly discusses major elements, other than the site environment, which influence development of mining and reclamation plans and refers to other readily available literature for details outside the scope of this study. The essence of the rationale is shown to be the 1 employment of necessary skills at the proper time to evaluate specific data ' requirements and integrate them into a cost-effective program to produce initial and major feasibility reports, mining, and reclamation plans, and the environmental impact assessment.

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

In the experimental concentration of Vermont talc-magnesite ores, talc concentrates and tailings rich in magnesite were obtained. On account of the possible market value of the magnesite, the tailings are given consideration' in this report along with the talc. After some comments about the talc industry, the magnesite that accrued as tailings will be considered. Then the flotation results will follow.

The effectiveness of an industry?s safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and ?service" contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. The Bureau of Mines explored the Three Kids deposit in 1941 as part of a strategic minerals program. Earlier mining and exploration had established the presence of a substantial tonnage of medium-grade wad ore, and drilling and sampling by the Bureau of Mines, in collaboration with the Federal Geological Survey, indicated an additional tonnage such that development and exploitation became more clearly feasible. Private interests, with Government support, undertook to produce metallurgical-grade manganese. The present paper describes the Bureau of Mines exploration and subsequent development. Manganese in the Three Kids area is found in one of the lower members of the Muddy Creek formation in a bed of fine sandstone and silt, which outcrops around the north edge of the River Mountains and generally dips 20° to 40° away from the hills. There is considerable variation in the thickness and grade of the ore. The ore is light weight, having a density of 1.2 to 2.

Multiple versions of an educational message can reach a diverse population more effectively than a single version. For instance, some workers are trained in formal classrooms while others are self-taught. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has developed multiple versions of a hearing loss simulator (an interactive software package, a Web-based module, and an electronic slide show) to show how a single set of information can be readily adapted to different delivery methods. The three versions of the simulator were developed with a minimum of effort and expense compared to a single, less-flexible version. The interactive software is best for training sessions led by a hearing conservation professional, the Web pages are best suited for an individual worker, and the slide show is best for a small, more-generalized, training class. This paper will describe additional advantages and disadvantages of different delivery systems and will show what considerations are helpful in designing content that can be readily adapted to alternate presentations.

Wastewater from uranium mines in the Ambrosia Lake district near. Grants, New Mexico, U.S.A., contains uranium, selenium, radium, and molybdenum. The Kerr-McGee Corporation has a novel treatment process for waters from two mines, sections 35 and 36, to reduce the concentrations of the trace contaminants. Particulates are settled by ponding, and the waters are passed through an ion exchange resin to remove uranium; barium chloride is added to precipitate sulfate and radium from the mine waters. The mine waters are subsequently passed through three consecutive algae ponds prior to discharge. Water, sediment and biological samples were collected over a 4-year period and analyzed to assess the role of biological agents in removal of inorganic trace contaminants from the mine waters.

Multiple seam interactions are a major ground control hazard in many U.S. underground coal mines. The two most common types are: • Undermining, where stress concentrations caused by previous full extraction in an overlying seam is the primary concern, and; • Overmining, where previous full extraction in an underlying seam can result in stress concentrations and rock damage from subsidence. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has completed a major study aimed at helping to identify the location and likely severity of these interactions. In the course of field visits to mines throughout the U.S., more than 300 multiple seam case histories were assembled into the largest data base of multiple seam case histories ever collected. These data were analyzed with the multivariate statistical technique of logistic regression. The study also employed LaM2D to estimate the multiple seam stresses, ALPS and ARMPS to determine pillar stability factors, and the CMRR to measure roof quality. The study resulted in the development of a computer program, called Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), which can help mine planners to evaluate each potential interaction and take steps to reduce the risk of ground control failure. AMSS first evaluates pillar design by calculating the single seam Stability Factor (SFSS) using ALPS or ARMPS. It also automatically generates a LaM2D analysis that provides the additional multiple seam stress so that the final, multiple seam SFMS can be determined. The second part of the AMSS procedure builds upon the statistical findings that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries, and weaker roof significantly increases the risk of multiple seam interactions. AMSS quantifies these effects and predicts the outcome in terms of three levels of risk: GREEN (where a major multiple seam interaction is considered unlikely), YELLOW (where adding a pattern of cable bolts or other equivalent supplemental support could greatly reduce the probability of a major interaction.), or RED (a major interaction should be considered likely, and it may be desirable to avoid the area entirely).
