Wettability measurements and laboratory waterflood tests were compared under a wide variety of conditions. Experiments were conducted with synthetic and natural crude oils, treated and untreated outcrop and oilfield sandstone cores, and synthetic brines with and without caustic, detergent, or phosphate additives. Measurements were made on equilibrated and unequilibrated systems at 77° and 150° F. Wettability was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines method from capillary pressure curves determined with a centrifuge. The waterflood data were fitted by empirical curves; the parameters of the curves characterize primary and subordinate production and also give the ultimate oil recovery. Results showed that wettability measurements at 77° F were useful predictors of recovery efficiency in waterflood tests run at both temperatures. Oil recovery in the early stages of waterflooding increased with increasing water wettability; however, the ultimate recovery was highest at a slightly oil-wet condition. The oil displaced at highest speed in the centrifuge was correlated with ultimate recovery in waterflood tests. Chemical additives to the brine sometimes lowered wettability and also sometimes improved waterflood recovery, but wettability and recovery were not correlated with additives present. The effect of additives on recovery in waterflooding was best seen in water-oil ratio curves.

In this article, we will describe miners? preparedness to evacuate a fire and their experience with incipient fires.

Most State enacting bodies have deemed it necessary to specify a maximum speed at which men may be hoisted or lowered in mine shafts. Since most mine cages are not closed in, as are passenger elevators in office buildings, and since, ordinarily, neither the starting tin g nor stopping of the cage is as general as that of these elevators, such regulations are all the more necessary for the comfort and safety of the men. It is also quite generally recognized that it is dangerous to over-crowd cages. Hence, a number of States have limited the number of men that may be on cage at one time.

Carbonate minerals constitute a major fraction of the oil shale in Colorado's Green River Formation. Quantification of carbonate minerals is important for the characterization of oil shale, particularly because of their thermal activity in production of oil from shale. The carbonate minerals found in this oil shale are nahcolite (NaHCO3), dawsonite [NaA1(OH)2CO3], dolomite [(Mg1-xFx)Ca(CO3)2], calcite (CaCO3), and ferroan [(Mg1-xFex)CO3]. Although carbonate minerals can be removed by acid extraction from the balance of the oil shale, direct determination of carbonate minerals is complicated by the occurrence of the same cations in more than one mineral. A method for assigning the acid-soluble cations to the individual carbonate minerals was developed from two assumptions based on oil shale geochemistry: (1) Calcite and ferroan do not occur together, and (2) the ratio of iron and magnesium is the same in dolomite and ferroan. These assumptions were tested by the Bureau of Mines by applying the technique for assigning cations to 219 samples from the saline section of the formation. The reported carbonate mineral amounts were compared statistically with X-ray diffraction peak heights, verifying the cation assignment method.

"SummaryDiesel-exhaust particles from two sources were dispersed in aqueous mixtures of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, and were tested for genotoxicity. Diesel samples from the same sources were extracted with dichloromethane and transferred into dimethyl sulfoxide and subjected to the same assays. Both types of extractions yielded similar results in both the Salmonella mutagenicity assay and the sister-chromatid exchange assay using V79 cells. After separation of the samples into supernatant and sediment fractions, the activity of both diesel samples was shown to reside exclusively in the supernatant fraction for the solvent-extracted samples, and exclusively in the sedimented fraction for surfactant dispersed samples. These findings indicate that genotoxic activity associated with diesel particles inhaled into the lung may be made bioavailable by virtue of the solubilization / dispersion properties of pulmonary surfactant components.While diesel engine emissions are associated primarily with transportation, they are also very common in the workplace. Estimates for the U.S. are that as many as 1.35 million workers in as many as 80 000 workplaces are exposed to the combustion products of diesel engines (NIOSH, 1988). These occupations include, but are not limited to mining, agriculture, motor vehicle maintenance, fork lift truck driving, truck driving, and tunnel and bridge operation."

This report, which covers the period from January 16 to October 21, 1974, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of contract no. H0242028 and modifications 1 and 2 thereto. The purpose of the contract was to further reline and modify three of the canopies (shuttle car, loader, and roof drill) which were developed under contract no. H0220031, and to conduct further testing and demonstration of the relined designs. Modifications I and 2 involved conducting further in-mine evaluations of the face. drill and cutter canopies, also developed under contract no. H0220031. In addition to the canopy modifications, the contract involved an evaluation of an operator's seat concept for a shuttle car which was developed for the USBM by another contractor.

As part of a joint U.S. Atomic Energy Commission-Federal Bureau of Mines program for using nuclear energy to supply process heat, a simulated nuclear loop has been constructed to test components. This loop has been operated for more than 1,800 hours at 100 p.s.i.g. Of this period, 23 hours were at 2,500° F. and higher; 540 at 2,000° to 2,500° F.; 840 at 1,500° to 2,000° F.; 200 at 1,000° to 1,500° F.; and 260 below 1,000° F. Leakage at flanges and welds was not a serious problem. A helium-recycle system with gas temperatures of 2,300° to 2,500° F. and a static pressure of 250 p.s.i.g. appears feasible. Difficulties were encountered with the recycle compressor due to thermal distortion of the impeller and shaft. The use of sealed bearings limits compressor operation to the life of the bearings.

Sphalerite concentrates prepared during processing of Missouri lead ores contain small percentages of cobalt and nickel which adversely affect zinc electrolysis. The Bureau of Mines has evaluated solvent extraction and precipitation techniques to remove and recover cobalt and nickel from zinc sulfate solution prior to zinc electrolysis. Prepared zinc sulfate solutions containing about 190 gpl of zinc and 50 ppm of both cobalt and nickel were treated using various combinations of complexing reagents, solvent, pH, concentration, time, and temperature. The following complexing reagents gave the best results: a-nitroso-ß-naphthol, ß-nitroso-a-naphthol, 1,2 cyclohexane dione dioxime (nioxime), di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime, and dimethylglyoxime. These reagents in suitable solvents lowered the cobalt and nickel levels to <0.1 ppm. Stripping the complexed reagents from the solvents was not possible except for nioxime. Direct addition of the appropriate reagent to the prepared zinc sulfate solution resulted in the precipitation of cobalt and nickel. Several possible flowsheets are presented for the removal and recovery of cobalt and nickel. Good zinc deposits were successfully electrowon from zinc sulfate solutions purified by solvent extraction and precipitation.

As part of the continuing effort by the Bureau of Mines to promote mine safety, research work is being conducted at the Experimental coal mine, Bruceton, Pa., on the prevention of coal-mine explosions and on other mine-safety problems. The principal subjects studied during the past 2 years are briefly described in this paper. Although at present these problems are relevant particularly to the mine layout and to high-speed mining practices in numerous American coal mines, it is hoped that the findings will prove interesting and useful also to our European research colleagues. Some of the investigations treated here will be presented in greater detail in forthcoming Bureau of Mines reports. 1. UNDERGROUND STORAGE OF COAL CUTTINGS The seams in mist American bituminous-coal mines are undercut, shear-cut, or top-cut before blasting. The cuttings arc generally loaded out with the balance of the coal. However, in some mines it is not economical to load and remove cuttings from the mine. This applies especially if the cut section of the seam is of appreciably lower grade than the rest of the coal, or if the cut is made partly into an adjacent stratum that is high in incombustible content. In such mines the cuttings are sometimes stored in random heaps in rooms or other areas, along the ribs of mine entries, or in layers on the floor of rooms or entries.

Rock masses of the primary copper ore at the El Teniente Mine are very competent and massive. The rock mass contains almost no open discontinuities. Nevertheless, there is a high frequency network of small discontinuities coupled with widely spaced faults. A data collection campaign designed to characterize the rock structure was recently implemented. The results show that conventional analysis in terms of discontinuity frequency does not predict differences between two studied sectors. However, when an empirical definition of a weak discontinuity is applied, appreciable differences between the two sectors appear in terms of discontinuity frequency and predicted in situ block size distributions. These differences are in accordance with actual observations at the mine site. Due to the geological features of the primary copper ore, rock mass classification schemes cannot be readily applied to characterize these rock masses.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Gypsum-Camel deposit on Iyoukeen Cove Chichagof Island, Southeastern Alaska, from April 21 to August 26, 1948, as A part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing an Alaskan construction industry. As gypsum is one of the components necessary for the manufacture of cement and one of the raw materials for plaster and plaster-board products, it is desirable to locate and develop a readily accessible deposit of gypsum in Alaska. In 1928, B. D. Stewart of the Territorial Department of Mines surveyed the gypsum deposits at Iyoukeen Cove, and during the summer of 1946 George M. Flint, Jr., and Edward H. Cobb of the Federal Geological Survey examined and mapped the old workings at Gypsum Creek and the prospect at Iyoukeen Cove. Both the Territorial Department of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey recommended the Gypsum-Camel prospect as warranting a diamond-drilling program by the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines project consisted of cleaning out and sampling, the old underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface to ascertain the lateral extensions of the deposit.

"Production of explosives for industrial use in,the United States during 1934 continued the upward trend begun in 1933 from the low-level output of 1932, and the output in 1934 was only slightly less than in 1931.Reports to the United Stated Bureau of Mines from companies engaged in the manufacture of industrial explosives showed that the quantity of explosives manufactured in the United States and sold during 1934 for use within the various States was 314,767,922 pounds - 23 percent more than in 1931.Production during 1934 included 39,207,845 pounds of permissible explosives 5 206,625,027 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and,68,935,050 pounds of black blasting powder of which 37,192,700 pounds were in granular form and 31,742,350 pounds in pellet form. These figures represent an increase over 1933 of 15.6 percent for permissible explosives, 30.9 percent for other high explosive, and 7.4 percent for black powder.Coal-mining operations were the chief consumers of permissible explosives; 99 percent of the total output in 1934 was used, in coal mines. The proportion used by bituminous mines was 59 percent and by anthracite mines 40 percent. Coal mining was likewise the principal consumer of black blasting powder, taking 88 percent of the total sales during 1934; of this proportion, bituminous mines received 78 percent and anthracite mines between 9 and 10 percent. Consumers of high explosives other than permissibles were more varied; the reports showed that 11 percent of the total quantity sold was for coal mining, 22 percent for metal mining, 17 percent for quarrying and nonmetallic-mineral mining, 46 percent for railway and other construction work, and 4 percent for all other purposes."

This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two larges t oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana, Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years; although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.

"Soon after the armistice, an investigation was conducted by the writer on the use of liquid oxygen for explosive purposes in Germany, so far as the conditions of such investigation wore permitted at the time. The results of this inquiry were published in Technical Paper 243, entitled ""Development of Liquid Oxygen Explosives during the War.""Recently, through the courtesy of Dr. C. L. Parsons, former chief chemist of the Bureau, who was visiting Germany, and Mr. Chester L. Benson, of the American Expeditionary Forces in Germany, data was obtained from the Deutsche Oxhydric A. G., Surth near Cologne, (one of the principal manufacturers of liquid oxygen installation) concerning the number of plants which bad been installed in Germany during the period following the armistice. The design of retort interchamber pillars is important in determining surface stability over in situ retort mines and to the health and safety of miners, particularly with respect to possible escape of heat and toxic gases from retort chambers. Stress distribution in retort interchamber pillars, roof, and floor was examined with the aid of linear, finite-element analysis using data from experimentally determined mechanical properties. Properties determined included elastic moduli, strength, and creep constants in laboratory tests on core covering a 100-foot depth interval in the oil shale from the Piceance Basin in Colorado. The most critical stress concentration was found in the rib side of the interchamber pillar at a height above the floor line of 1.25 times the width. Guidelines for pillar design that consider pillar strength, creep, and retorting temperature effects are proposed.

Surface mining drastically alters the ecological characteristics of the area disturbed and in some cases has a decided effect on surrounding areas. Vegetation is removed, topographic features and characteristics are changed, and the original geologic overburden profiles are destroyed. Spoil banks generally are a heterogeneous mixture of rock fragments, rock particles, and soil-sized material derived from the overburden strata. With proper mining techniques, the various strata can be partially or completely segregated. Segregation of over- burden material offers the opportunity to bury the toxic, acid, or salt-pro producing strata under growth supporting material. In some situations, lower strata may have more desirable characteristics than surface material and can be placed near or on the surface. For example, limestone strata appear in some lower overburden profiles that have shale and/or sandstone near the surface. Also, some lower strata have higher nutrient levels that have been leached from the surface. Experience has shown that natural revegetation is a very slow process on strip mined areas. Native vegetation may not be compatible with the environment on the mined areas, for example : 1. Low nutrients in the spoil. 2. Toxic spoils (very acid or highly alkaline ). 3. Surrounding vegetation may be of the climax type and may not have pioneer- or primary-invader-type species present. 4. The seed source may be to far away from the adjacent mined areas. Early attempts to revegetate strip-mined lands with trees also proved to be unsatisfactory as they did not provide the initial ground cover required to stabilize the spoil. Erosion control with trees only may take up to 10 years before the canopies close and an effective cover is established. They are slow to form soil profiles and do not provide effective chemical pollution control until long after planting. A quick growing cover of herbaceous species is necessary to obtain quick stabilization and initial protection against erosion by reducing runoff and rain-drop splash. The Bureau of Mines investigated the formation of boron and boron-carbide coatings by vapor-phase reactions. Optimum parameters were determined for hydrogen reduction of boron trichloride and for the fonnation of boron-carbide coatings on graphite by reaction with the depositing boron. At 1,300° C, about 85 percent of the boron was deposited. Tungsten substrates did not react with the boron deposit; other substrates reacted to various extents. The hydrogen reduction of boron tribromide was briefly investigated. Boron carbide was deposited at 1,300° C by adding methane to the boron trichloride-hydrogen feed gas. The chemical composition of the vapor-deposited boron carbide approximated B4C. A method of etching B4C was developed to study its microstructure. When boron was deposited on graphite at 1,500° C, very hard, uniform, strongly adherent coatings of B4C were formed that might be useful in rocket nozzle applications.
