Because of environmental concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated an anhydrous chlorination process for the recovery of copper from chalcopyrite, Pelletized concentrate was reacted continuously with chlorine in a vertical shaft reactor at 550° to 750° C to extract copper-iron chlorides and elemental sulfur. The resulting molten metal chlorides drained from the reactor and collected in a receiver while sulfur distilled from the top and condensed in a separate unit. The tests were conducted in a 10-cm-diam reactor constructed of glass and in l5-cm-diam reactors constructed from various refractory materials. A high-alumina ramming mix exhibited the best resistance to molten metal chlorides and elemental sulfur in chlorine atmospheres. A reactor made with this high-alumina refractory was operated for 55 hr under actual chlorinating conditions without suffering any deterioration. Tests results show that more than 96 pct of the chalcopyrite was converted to copper-iron chlorides and elemental sulfur. Good separation of the metal chloride and sulfur products was achieved. After filtration, elemental sulfur of greater than 99 pct purity was obtained.

The helium resources base of the United States was estimated by the Bureau of Mines to be 961 Bcf as of January 1, 1983. These resources are divided into four categories in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in proved natural gas re- serves, 271 Bcf, (2) helium in probable natural gas resources, estimated at 202 Bcf, (3) helium in possible natural gas resources, estimated to be 351 Bcf, and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, which makes up the remaining 137 Bcf. These helium resources are further divided into depleting, nondepleting, and stored classifications. The depleting resources are those associated with natural gas fields that are, or will be, produced for the natural gas they contain. All of the helium in potential (probable, possible, and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 789 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources, those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gas fields, are estimated to total 134 Bcf. There is 38 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government- owned Cliffside Gas Field near Amarillo, TX.

As a part of a wartime program to aid in the development of known ore bodies and in the discovery of hitherto unknown deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of diamond-drilling the Christmas copper deposit, in Gila County, Ariz., to increase the reserves of milling ore. Upon recommendation of the examining engineer, drilling was begun in September 1942, from the bottom (770) level of the mine. One month later, in cooperation with the Bureau, the Federal Geological Survey started geologic mapping of the mine workings. Since extensive and costly development would be required, the War Production Board concluded that ore below the bottom level could not be mined at that time because of the wartime shortages of equipment and man-power. In January 1943, drilling was moved to the 300 and 400 levels to locate reserves readily accessible for continued production of fluxing ore. This drilling, which was under the supervision of L. G. Marshall, was completed in January 1944.

DOMEST1C production of carbon black in 1963, remained at about the same level as in 1962. Carbon black produced by the furnace process increased 2 percent to 1,880 million pounds in 1963 and accounted for 91 percent of the total output. Channel black production continued to decline and was 14 percent less than a year ago. Shipments during 1963 totaled 2,098 million pounds, a 1 percent increase for the year. An increase of 88 million pounds in domestic sales was partially offset by a decrease of 72 million pounds in carbon black exports. Total value of carbon black production in 1963 was $148 million. The average value per pound was 7.18 cents or 0.12 cent per pound more than in 1962.

Objective To improve seats on mine shuttle cars with ergonomic design and by reducing shock impact transmitted through the mine vehicle seat to the vehicle operator. Background Operators of underground mobile equipment, particularly shuttle cars, are often exposed to significant levels of shock and whole-body vibration. Past studies have reported that as many as one-third of underground equipment operators could be exposed to adverse levels of shock and whole-body vibration. Moreover, seats on mining equipment, historically, are inadequate relative to the ergonomic needs of the equipment operator. In the extreme, amine vehicle seat has sometimes consisted of blocks of wood or a bent steel plate bolted to the machine frame. Also, the lack of sufficient vertical clearance in some underground mines is an impediment to providing adequate shock isolation systems on mine equipment seats. Approach The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) is conducting research with viscoelastic foams to improve seats on mine shuttle cars. Viscoelastic foams were used in an ergonomically designed seat to reduce the amount of shock transmitted through the mine vehicle seat to the vehicle operator. Data on selected viscoelastic foams were analyzed from laboratory shock tests at PRC. Using information from the analysis, two ergonomic seats incorporating selected foam were constructed for in-mine testing on a shuttle car (Joy 21SC) in eastern Kentucky. The shuttle car operated in a 35-in-thick coal seam with an approximate mining height of 43 in. Operational data were recorded on the ergonomic and original seats. Further, the shuttle car operator was asked to compare these seats. Results When comparing the original seat (figure 1) with the ergonomic seat (figure 2), the shuttle car operator described the ergonomic seat as generally “much better” than the original seat. The operator explained. “It’s just easy to adjust. And it’s got the lower lumbar support. And the pad is thicker. It’s just much better all the way around.” He added, “It does support you more and [there is] less shock when you hit a hole...I liked the lower lumbar support. That’s where most of your shock is at, in your lower back.” The operational data supported the operator’s comments. In the full-load case, significant improvements in isolation were achieved(down to 15 Hz) with the ergonomic seat. Additional laboratory testing of seven viscoelastic foams was done to further improve the level of isolation from shock and better characterize the material properties of each foam. Data from this testing were used in an analytical model of the seat pan isolation system. Results showed that two of the viscoelastic foams, SUN-MATE EXTRA-SOFT and PUDGEE, gave the most effective shock isolation of the seven materials tested. A composite of EXTRA-SOFT and PUDGEE foams improved the isolation characteristics of the seat pan to approximately 4 Hz. Similarly, EXTRA-SOFT by itself provided isolation to 5 Hz. In a Bureau of Mines study two-dimensional mathematical equations were solved that describe the transient thermal response of a rock dust particle in a cloud of similar particles in a gas flame's preheat zone subject to a radiant field from the approaching flame. The description includes both radiant energy absorbed and emitted by the particle and thermal conduction inside the particle and into the surrounding gas environment moving relative to the particle. Two situations were studied; in one the radiant energy incident on the particle is converted to thermal energy at the particle surface, and in the other the radiant energy is converted to thermal energy uniformly over the volume of the particle. The result of the study showed that for a 10-µm-radius particle, a 200-mg 1-1 loading density, and a flame approach velocity of 30 m sec-1, the particle temperature rise was twice that previously calculated by Singer and Cook based on the model of Essenhigh and Csaba. It was further established that under the conditions examined a rock dust particle temperature never increases more than about 200 K before crossing the flame front.

Contract H0242013 was originally to evaluate through underground tests, water spray systems for controlling respirable dust at the face of a longwall plow. A number of difficulties were encountered which made such an evaluation impractical. The contract was modified to evaluate, in the BCR dust tunnel facility, the live factors believed to affect respirable dust levels. A 60-foot long; plow face mock-up was constructed in the dust tunnel, a facility with controlled airflow and dust concentration. Six types of nozzles were tested with the following parameters: two nozzle orientations, two levels of water pressure, two levels of airflow, and with and without simulated airflow through the gob. Of these factors, the most significant in reducing respirable dust levels was nozzle orientation, where the nozzle directed 45 degrees downstream resulted in 27 percent lower dust levels than those directed 45 degrees upstream (against the airflow). Following in order of effectiveness were the higher water pressure and the lower airflow. All nozzles tested resulted in similar dust reduction, i.e., the type of nozzle was the least significant factor.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

The Bureau of Mines developed a flue gas desulfurization process as part of its goal of minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts associated with energy and mineral-processing plants. The modified citrate process involves absorption of sulfur dioxide (S02) in a buffered citric acid solution. The S02-loaded solution is regenerated by countercurrent contact with steam in a packed tower. The wet S02 product is then dried and can be liquefied or further processed to make sulfuric acid. Test data from process investigation unit studies are presented. Material balances, flowsheets, and cost estimates are given for recovering S02 from copper smelter reverberatory gas, lead smelter sintering machine tail gas, and power-plant stack gas. Operating cost estimates show the process will add $0.04 per pound of copper, $0.01 per pound of lead, and $0.015 per kwhr to the cost of the respective operations. These costs could be substantially reduced if a source of waste heat was avail-able to provide the process steam requirements.

This report details the testing and evaluation of a modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS) to provide navigational information for a continuous mining machine. Vehicle navigation is part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines research program in computer-assisted mining serving as a tool to increase mining health, safety, and productivity. The Bureau is investigating other navigation systems, but MAPS seems to have the most promise. MAPS was installed on a continuous mining machine. An operator used the machine to cut coal while researchers collected machine and MAPS data. A comparison of MAPS data for xy position and data obtained with an electronic transit showed an increasing error for MAPS. After 30 min of operation, the easting position error was -0.02 m, and the northing position error was 0.019 m; after 60 min of operation, the easting position error was -0.19 m, and the northing position error was -0.26 m. Modifications to MAPS software and to the operational procedure of the machine significantly reduced this error by a factor of 3.7. Researchers continue to reduce these errors.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on various technologies to recover alumina from domestic resources for feedstock to existing aluminum smelting capacity as a means to reduce dependence on imported bauxite, which represents 93 pct of U.S. aluminum requirements. One of the more promising technologies being investigated is the hydrochloric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay. In the hydrochloric acid leaching technology, alumina is recovered from iron-free aluminum chloride leach liquor and separated from impurity elements by sparging the liquor with HC1 gas to crystallize aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH). A large-scale crystallizer with a 336-gallon usable volume was constructed and operated to obtain engineering and design data for potential scale up and to demonstrate the ability of the technology to produce specification grade alumina. Test campaigns involving about 1,400 hours of operation were completed. ACH meeting all chemical purity requirements could not be produced by a single crystallization, but was produced by recrystallizing the product from the calcined kaolin clay leach liquor. Product crystals with a size distribution of more than 80 pct plus 100 mesh and 65 pct plus 65 mesh were made at a rate of 10 pounds of ACH/(hr)(ft3). The zirconium tube heat exchanger used to maintain constant process temperature operated with an over-all heat transfer coefficient of 420 to 500 BTU/(hr)(ft2)(°F).

The Bureau of Mines investigated two areas of oil and gas seeps in the north-central Gulf of Alaska--Katalla River to Bering River and Cape Yakataga to Yakutat Bay to determine (1) whether previously reported seeps are still active, (2) the characteristics of the seeping hydrocarbons, and (3) the amount of bitumen contained in the drainage leaving the seeps and entering the Gulf of Alaska. Thirteen separate oil seeps, six bitumen deposits, and eight gas seeps were located, sampled, and analyzed. The oils ranged from 35.2° to 14.1° API gravity and had sulfur contents from 0.53 to 1.31 wt-pct. Bitumen samples had API gravities from 2.4° to 14.6° and sulfur contents from 0.28 to 0.88 wt-pct. Gas samples had specific gravities ranging from 0.577 to 0.883 and caloric values from 724 to 1,427 Btu/cu ft. A total of 63 water samples obtained from seep locations and seep drainages were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for ionic content and by solvent extraction for hydrocarbon content. Although some of the water at the oil seeps had a bitumen content as high as 246,000 mg/1, the amount of hydrocarbons actually reaching the Gulf of Alaska averaged <0.2 mg/1.

The safety record of the metal mining and milling industries in 1965 is reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. The overall injury-frequency rate of 23.77 per million man-hours was 5 percent lower than in 1964 and was the lowest annual rate in a statistical history beginning with 1931. The injury-severity rate of 3,521 days lost per million man-hours in 1965 represented a 5-percent improvement over 1964. However, the total of 3,825 disabling work injuries comprised 61 fatal and 3,764 nonfatal injuries, one and 92 more, respectively, than in 1964. At primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants, the injury-frequency rate of 8.97 per million man-hours in 1965 was 13 percent lower, but the severity rate percent higher than in 1964. these plants in 1965, 4 more of 1,173 days lost per million man-hours was 17 There were 12 fatal and 971 nonfatal injuries at and 28 fewer, respectively, than in 1964.

The physical properties and related geological and petrographic data for 81 rock types obtained from operating mines or selected test sites are presented in this report. Most of these rock data were obtained to supplement structural studies in underground mines; however, the data may be equally applicable to other problems where the physical properties of rock are an important factor. Stress-strain curves are presented, where available, and free medium velocities from laboratory and field measurements are compared for several rock types. Rock-type, geographical, and geo-logical indexes are included for reference relative to physical property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical property reports. INTRODUCTION This report presents the physical properties of 81 rock types from 16 different projects (sections 53-68). Three previous physical property reports2 3 4/ (herein after referred to as parts I, II, and III) presented data on 244 rock types from 52 project areas. (Part I included sections 1-25, part II sections 26-36, and part III sections 37-52).

Table 19 and figure 7 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface metal/nonmetal mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 19 also shows the injury risk rates, employees&apos; working hours, and lost workdays. A total of 79 fires occurred in 16 states during 1990-2001 for these mines. Forty-five of the fires caused 44 injuries and 2 fatalities (including 9 fires and 7 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 6.6 fires and 3.7 injuries. Sixty-five fires with 31 injuries and 2 fatalities occurred at metal mines, and 14 fires with 13 injuries occurred at nonmetal mines. The Ewhr value was 546 x 106 hr (In = 0.016), and the LWD value was 13,134. Nevada and Arizona had the most fires (19 fires, 10 injuries, and 1 fatality; and 19 fires and 11 injuries, respectively). They were followed by Minnesota (11 fires, 4 injuries, and 1 fatality) and Alaska (6 fires and 4 injuries). Of these states, Alaska had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.079). Table 20, partly illustrated in figure 8, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees&apos; working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires increased during the second period, then decreased during most of the remaining periods. The number of fire injuries decreased during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the last period), accompanied by a decline in employees&apos; working hours during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the third and fourth periods). The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the number of fire injuries. Tables 21-26 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 9 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 27 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.
