Canopies were designed, fabricated, installed, and demonstrated for mining machinery in 3-foot coal seams. A Wilcox PJ20 Auger miner, a Wilcox Bolter, a bee Norse 245 miner, and an Elkhorn Scoop AR3 modified to AR4 were fitted with canopies. The Wilcox Bolter canopy was hydraulically adjustable in height; the rest were manually pin adjustable. The machine operators' comments were adverse in each case. Restriction of visibility and body constriction into unaccustowed and tiring attitude were major objections, causing increased hazards and fatigue. Recommendations are made that roll bar protection be furnished in place of canopies for 3-foot seams to provide partial protection by deflecting and supporting roof falls but not covering the head of the operator. In this way, the effect on visibility would be minimized and fatigue from body restriction would not be increased.

During 1928 the United States consumed 73,270 long tons of virgin or primary tin, which was approximately 7.5 per cent more than the 68,198 long tons con¬sumed in 1927 and equaled 41 per cent of the world's production in 1928 (approximately 178,000 long tons). Consumers' stocks amounted to 9,268 tons on January 1, 1928, and 8,587 long tons on December 31, 1928, a net reduction of 681 tons. In addition to the virgin tin accounted for above, 12,106 long tons of secondary metallic tin were used by manufacturers of tin products in 1928. These figures are the result of an inquiry addressed by the Bureau of Mines to manufacturers to determine the amount of metallic tin used by them; in reply, 1,307 establishments reported consumption in 1928. The distribution of the amount consumed by various uses, as shown in the allowing tabulation based on Bureau of Mines canvasses for 1927 and 1928 in comparison with consumption by uses reported by the War Industries Board for 1917, emphasizes the fact that new uses for tin have been developed in only minor or insignificant amounts. Furthermore, although the studies for recent years show that some older uses have been discontinued, the amounts involved were all small and insignificant. Variation in consumption from year to year parallels the fluctuations in demand for the already well-established tin products. For example, the manufacture of bearing metals and solders for motor cars and trucks required 19,000 tons in 1928 compared to 16,000 tons in 1927; the canning industry continues to require the greater portion of the tin plate and also much solder. Growth in the electrical and the more recently developed industries (aeroplane, refrigerators, radio, etc.), while affecting total consumption of bearing metals, solders, etc., has made little change in the proportions required for these basic methods of using tin.

On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining Co.'s Granite Mountain shaft. How this insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the lire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest pro¬ducer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

"INTRODUCTION The orienting phases of the current investigation of cushioned blasting in the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines were indicated in a previous publication (5) 3/. Pertinent literature reviewed therein indicated a highly controversial field. This emphasized the need for experimental studies of many factors that affect the health and safety of miners and the efficiency of mining operations. Results of some orienting tests showed marked effects on practical hazards. Further, they emphasized the necessity and importance of the contemplated investigation. The scope and general plan of these practical inquiries into the safety of cushioned blasting were indicated.This investigation of cushioned blasting relates to the various means employed to reduce the intensity of application of energy from explosive actions in boreholes. It has been suggested (from p. 19 of reference 5) that the divisions of this work would correspond to the salient hazards affected by cushioned blasting. These include the ignition hazard, hazards from poisonous gases, and other practical hazards in the blasting technique. The ignition hazard was resolved into two components of approximately equal weight. These include studies of effects upon (1) the incendivity of blown-out shots and upon (2) the occurrence of such shots. Experimental studies of effects on the incendivity of blown-out shots were first undertaken. Questions of the best procedure for making these evaluations have been adduced, and the interpretation and utilization of the results of gallery testing seemed to require detailed attention; some preliminary general considerations of such testing were therefore necessary."

First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.

"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The foundation of Japan's growing industrial and economic strength lies primarily in minerals, power, and technical know-how. Domestic raw material resources cannot supply domestic demand, and imports are indispensable. The Japanese are forced to acquire minerals and metals on a global basis, and their activities already have made an impact on international markets. A by-product of these efforts is the development and expansion of mines in many parts of the world to supply Japanese requirements. Japan now has a surplus capacity to produce finished products for consumption and export. Tradition-ally, domestic deficits in minerals have been met by importing crude materials. Because of the rising demand, however, the time has come when semi finished products as well as crude minerals are required. While the domestic market is the mainstay for Japan's industrial products, expanding export markets are essential for balancing trade and for providing economic prosperity and higher living standards for the Japanese people. Japan has a long history of mineral and industrial development, and the best in modern practices abroad has been adopted and modified for use under Japanese conditions of smaller enterprises, cheaper labor, and a more closely knit society. Generations of industrious workmen, technicians, and business-men have been trained in industrial occupations. Devastation of war temporarily slowed progress, but at the same time provided the opportunity for reconstruction, modernization, rationalization, and expansion. The Japanese excel in small and medium-sized operations, but they also have mastered large-scale production. Management is aggressive, practical, and strongly imbued with the concepts of effective utilization of resources. Integrated operations, diversification of facilities, intense competition among concerns in the domestic market, and close cooperation in foreign activities characterize Japanese industrial policies. Available capital has been utilized up to the limit for the establishment of mineral and other industrial facilities at home and abroad. Technology, machinery and equipment, and transport services have been exported along with venture capital, and funds have been advanced against future delivery of foreign raw materials. The Government has been restrained in regulatory functions and has provided technical services to private industry. Thus, Japan's technological foundations are secure, management practices are efficient, and government has stimulated production. The future outlook is bright for the continued rapid growth of mineral and other industries in Japan. Already supreme in Asia in per capita output and living standards, Japan steadily is gaining on the European countries. Steel production has overtaken the United Kingdom and is pressing the level in West Germany. Consumption of fuels and power is expanding at a rapid rate. Construction activities are booming. Japan has built up medium-sized non-ferrous industries. Its ability to produce the exotic metals needed in the nuclear space age is well established. Since Japan makes a great variety of mineral products, her overall posture in mineral extraction and processing is strong. Primarily as a result of intensive efforts in the mineral and other industrial fields, Japan is emerging in world markets as a serious competitor to all industrialized nations.

Two processes are available for the production of synthetic fuels from coal high-pressure hydrogenation and the carbon monoxide-hydrogen synthe- sis. This paper presents some ideas and new developments in coal hydrogen- ation that have been incorporated in an estimate for the production of 30,000 barrels per day of liquid fuels, mainly gasoline. A few comparisons of the processes will be helpful before discussion of the details of pro- posed improvements in the hydrogenation process. The principle of the high-pressure hydrogenation process ie the addi- tion of hydrogen at pressurea in the range of 3,000 to 10,000 p.s.i. to coal at elevated temperature and with the help of catalysts. On the other hand, the principle in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is the complete break-down of coal into a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, followed by the catalytic combination of these two gasse into hydrocarbons or suitable catalysts. For the synthesis, moderately elevated pressures of about 350 p.8.1. will bo used in the immediate future, although it can be carried on at atmosphoric pressure with certain catalysts. The products of these two processes using coal as raw material are almost as differont as hydrocarbons can be. The products of the high-pres- sure hydrogenation of coal reflect the original constitution of the coal. They are, therefore, rich in ring compounds, both aromatic and naphthenic, but, due to the action of highly comprcesed hydrogen and catalyst, are satu- rated and very stable. These constituents give the gasoline a high octane number and excellent rich-mixture performance, combined with good gum and storage stability. Therefore, this gasoline is suitable for aviation gaso- line or base stock. The Diesel fuel can be hydrogenated to a centane number of 45 or higher, which is entirely satisfactory for operating normal Diesel

This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines to describe methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Navajo Uranium Division of Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc., mines uranium from several deposits of carnotite-type ores, which lie buried in the Lukachukai Mountains on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Ariz. The country is rugged and isolated Constructing and maintaining roads has been a continuous task. The ore bodies occur within the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation and are similar to other such deposits on the plateau. The current mining activity in the Lukachukai Mountains is a result of uranium-ore discoveries in 1949, although the Navajos undoubtedly knew of the outcrops of yellow uranium minerals long before that time. The ruggedness of the country and the heavy soil cover over much of the surface hampered prospecting, but probably the main reason the ore was not found sooner is that no one took the trouble to look for it in the Lukachukai Mountains.

It has long been recognized that one of the principal ways of combating dust in coal mines is by means of water sprays. However, spray systems, currently in use, clog or plug frequently, thereby reducing the effectiveness of dust control aid, in turn, possibly increasing the health hazard to mining personnel. Moreover, the maintenance and replacement of spray system components, e.g., nozzles and filters, can be expensive in terms of direct costs of labor and material, and the consequent loss of production. Recognizing these problems, the Bureau of Mines sponsored a research project on the "Development of a Non-Clogging Water Spray System"; this project was carried out by Eastern Associated Coal Corp. The overall objective of this project was to develop a non-clogging water spray system suitable for use in underground coal mines. Since most of the dust formed is at or near the working coal face, emphasis was placed on face equipment such as a continuous mining machine. To accomplish this objective, a two-phase project was carried out. The first phase involved determining the causes of spray nozzle and spray system clogging, determining the availability of spray nozzles or systems that could be modified to be non-clogging, and developing a non-clogging water spray system. Phase two was concerned with the fabrication and the laboratory and field testing of a non-clogging system. In each phase, there were both laboratory and field investigations, and the results of these investigations are presented in this report.

Longwall mining of thin shallow coal seams utilizing open pits is technically feasible. The thinnest coal seam which can be mined using available technology is 34 inches. The capital expenditure for a 1,000,000 ton per year operation is $15,494,000, and the projected rate of return is 5 percent. Similar statistics for a conventional area surface mine are S18,937,000 capital and 14 percent rate of return. The longwall surface mining method disturbs 63 acres of land per 1,000,000 tons, and the conventional area surface mine disturbs 198 acres A significant bibliography of the technology involved is included.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between, the Coordinating Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (C.R.C.) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.-4/ Further reports have been issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 and during the winter of 1942-43 and the summer of 1943 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1,) 41-42 and during the summer of 1942. The present report presents analytical data for 1,356 samples, representing the products of approximately 103 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines - and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 770 samples, 286 items, and 94 brands; premium-price, 537 samples, 236 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 49 samples, 31 items, and 18 brands. COAL, salt, lapis lazuli, and construction materials such as lime, gypsum, slate and stone were the only mineral commodities produced in Afghanistan during 1963. Beryl has been produced sporadically. Small deposits of chromite and lead-zinc are known but remained unexploited because there were no domestic markets for the two commodities and transportation costs from Afghanistan to world markets were too high. Oil fields of sufficient magnitude to justify exploitation have not been discovered, but known natural gas reserves are substantial and have potential significance. There is evidence of large high-grade iron ore resources, but these are in an unfavorable location. The contribution of the mineral industry to the economy was small, although precise figures are not available. The reported value of mineral production in 1963 (excluding barite) was 181.6 million afghanis (about US$4 million). Employment in the industry, including cement plants and quarries, was estimated to be no more than about 2,000.

This volume summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 30 jurisdictions of the Western Hemisphere. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of States or Provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent.
