The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. Downstream processing of these mineral fuels to petrochemicals and fertilizers is a major investment opportunity. In 1991, the 15 countries that constituted the region accounted for 26 % of world crude petroleum output, 15.3 % of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 4.5 % of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. Production of these mineral fuels all declined from that of 1990 owing to the Persian Gulf War, during which output from Kuwait and Iraq either ceased owing to war damage, or was embargoed. Prior to the war, Iraq and Kuwait were the fourth and fifth largest world producers of crude petroleum, respectively. In the war, virtually all of Kuwait's production and transport facilities were destroyed or damaged. Iraq's output was embargoed from export, with only domestic sales taking place. The embargo also affected Jordan, both in terms of transshipment of materials through it to Iraq and in exports of phosphate and potash. Shipments of crude petroleum by pipeline from Iraq through Saudi Arabia and Turkey and by vessel through the Persian Gulf were terminated. However, the loss in production from Iraq and Kuwait was made up by accelerated output from other Middle East and world producers. Saudi Arabia, in particular, with its excess production capacity, accounted for the largest portion, increasing crude petroleum output by 27 % to almost 3 billion barrels.

"I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. STATISTICS of injuries in the quarrying and related industries in the United States first became available when the Bureau of Mines collected reports from the operating companies for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1952, is the 33d publication containing statistical data on injuries at quarries and related plants, and it is the first to be published since 1944. The last publication was Bulletin 458, Quarry Accidents in the United States during the Calendar Year 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1942-51 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries at quarries, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to supply such data, and the reports received from operators are voluntary responses to the Bureau's requests for information. Although the figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, every effort has been exerted to make them so, and the figures given are believed to be thoroughly representative of the hazards to which quarry workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are com¬parable as between States -which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or to comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

For the world mineral industry as a whole, the year 1981 was a period of continuation and, in some instances, an acceleration of negative trends extending back into 1980. Most available statistical data reflected stagnation or downturns in activity. Levels of production, trade, and consumption declined for a substantial number of leading mineral commodities, including, most notably, steel and petroleum. Investment, if not lower than in 1980, was evidently increasing at a more modest rate. Prices for major mineral commodities were generally lower, at least in terms of constant dollars, and in some cases even in terms of current dollars. Prospects of a major reversal of these patterns seemed dim. The mineral industry, however, was far from alone in this general downturn; most other elements of the national economies of the world's nations fared little better. General conditions of inflation, recession, and reduced industrial product consumption were reflected in most other sectors of the total economy. International political events continued to influence mineral output and flow but had less influence on overall levels of activities than on the geographic distribution of these activities. The Iran-Iraq war certainly played a role in reducing mineral industry activities in those nations, but the commodity most affected, petroleum, was available from other sources in sufficient quantity that, in the face of reduced demand, a substantial surplus developed.

This report summarizes the research and technologic work of the Bureau of Mines on coal and coal products from July 1, 1947, to July 1, 1948. It is the thirteenth of a series presenting resumes based largely upon publications issued during the year . In some instances , research and testing results , not otherwise available in published form , are presented . The individual publications given as footnote references herein will provide further detail to the interested reader . The period covered by this report was marked by an ever -mounting concern for the adequacy of the Nation's fuel resources and for fuel shortages arising from an increasing demand for fuels at home and abroad . Several reports appeared which delineated the place of synthetic liquid fuels in the future fuel technology and economy of the Nation , emphasized the fact that eventually the principal raw material for the production of such fuels will bet,5,6 coal, and described the progress made by the Bureau of Mines in developing processes for the production of synthetic liquid fuels . heard testimony along similar lines . Increased awareness of the fuels problems confronting the Nation led to an authorization by the 80th Congress for the erection of an anthracite research laboratory at Schuylkill Haven , Pa . , to house expanded Bureau of Mines research on anthracite . Design of the structure was well under way by the end of the fiscal year . ( See fig . 1. ) Looking forward to expansion of Bureau research on lignite , the 80th Congress heard testimony on the problems and programs of lignite research10, 11 as a prelude to authorizing the construction of a lignite research laboratory in North Dakota .

Deposits of gray hematite occur in two districts in Talladega County, Ala., the Emauhee-Tallasechatch and Weewoka, both in the; vicinity of Wintorboro, 50 miles east of Birmingham. The deposits were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1945 and 1944. Approximately 15,000 feet of diamond drilling was done and 6,000 linear feet of trenches excavated and sampled.

"INTRODUCTION The property was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of lanes in December 1942 and was later investigated by the sane engineer in January and February 1943. Prominent outcrops and underground exposures of high-grade iron ore, together with mention of sizable intersections of hematite in logs of four widely scattered churn—drill holes, indicated the possible occurrence of a substantial tonnage of iron ore at this old copper producer.From March to May 1943, detailed topographic and geologic mapping of the property was done by the Federal Bureau of Mines, the Federal Geological Survey, and the Arizona Bureau of Mines.Funds were allotted for exploration of the property by churn and diamond drilling. This work was started in December 1943 and completed in June 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Minerals Data Source Directory is a compilation of descriptive information on the availability, content, and location of minerals data in the Federal Government. It is intended to assist Government personnel and the general public in locating and acquiring minerals information. Included in the Directory are descriptions of data bases, publications, information systems, and information offices containing data pertaining to ail aspects of mineral production, consumption, trade, and related information. These mineral data sources include the Federal agencies such as the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey whose major mission is the collection and dissemination of mineral information. Also included are agencies such as the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Labor, State, Transportation, and Treasury, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Environ- mental Protection Agency, the Federal Reserve System, the interstate Commerce Commission, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, whose primary mission is the collection of data in nonmineral subject areas, but in which the mineral industry is a component.

In 1980, the Bureau of Mines surveyed a group of mine seals in Randolph County, WV, to evaluate their effectiveness for reducing toxic pollutants in mine water discharges. The survey focused on 11 block wet mine seals, but mine seals of several other types were also examined. The seals were installed in 1966 and 1967 in abandoned drift portals by the Federal Water Quality Administration (FWQA), a predecessor of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and other Federal and State agencies, in a project known as Elkins Mine Drainage Pollution Control Demonstration Project. The seals were designed to prevent air from entering the mine portals while allowing mine water to flow out. It was believed that by preventing air from entering inactive or abandoned mines, the formation of toxic pollutants and acid mine drainage (AMD) could be reduced. Evaluation of the seals was based on water flow measurements, water analyses, and visual observations. The Bureau's 1980 data were compared with past data collected by the EPA. Several leaks and failures were observed in the clay seals, as evidenced by apparent blowouts and the absence of vegetation where the mine water surfaced. Analyses of the 1980 data indicated some improvement in the quality of water discharged from many of the wet air seals.

In 2005, a total of 2,063 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Coal mines comprised 14.1% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.6% (n=1,911) and anthracite mines 7.4% (n=152) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 70% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.0%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.6%).

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. "INTRODUCTION .Very little information regarding coal mining in Spain has been published in the American technical press, and few people realize the extent of this industry or the conditions under which coal is mined. The information in this publication was collected in 1945 and consists of personal observations in Spain, statistics, and other data of a, general nature obtained from official sources.Spain produces bituminous coal, lignite and anthracite, but the total tonnage mined is less than the national requirements. Before the war, an appreciable tonnages coal was imported from Great Britain under the Anglo-Spanish treaty, which rebated import duties and effectually prevented competition from any other foreign source. The war stopped the major part of the important of British coal and caused rapid expansion of the domestic sources, but this was not sufficient to supply the industrial demand. Coal that formerly was not acceptable to industry because of quality is now mined and marketed. The Government, allocates the better-grade bituininous coal to the various industries in accordance with the national importance of the work in which they are engaged; for example, the railroads are allotted 100 percent of their requirements, but cement companies can obtain only 25 percent.The Government offered to inducements to increase the production of coal of any class, but the larger part of the increased tonnage obtained was in inferior grades; as a result, the lignite production was taxed, while a bonus was paid for bituminous-coal production in excess of the 1942 tonnage.The anthracite and bituminous-coal areas were severely damaged during the Civil War and many experienced miners migrated to the lignite mines in eastern Spain. This has resulted in an acute shortage, particularly the Province of Oviedo where the most important bituminous-coal deposits are located."

Technology to enhance safety during mine hoisting has been developed by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Assessment of current hoisting technology suggests that monitoring conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety advantages. Wireless data transmission schemes and a package consisting of sensors, batteries, and a charger mounted on the wire rope and skip have been developed. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in a fill-size shaft are underway.

The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the effect of positive reinforcement, specifically, social reinforcement (SR), on the frequency of eye, hand, and back injuries at four experimental salt mines. Injury data was collected from January, 1976, for the prePOMOST period and from the onset of training to September, 1978, for the post-POMOST period. All data was collected on a month-by-month basis. For the training period approximately 100 managers and supervisors from five plants were trained in the use of positive reinforcement for occurrences of "safe behavior." Each supervisor was also provided manuals and other supportive materials. Additionally, following training, all supervisors were provided some coaching experience to keep the knowledge and capabilities gained during training from being extinguished. The analysis showed significant injury reductions in two sites and no injury reductions in the other two. When the injury data was corrected for the additional man hours expended in the postPOMOST period, a third site showed reduction in injuries. Similar findings were shown when the experimental sites were compared to other sites in the industry. The results were interpreted to support the hypothesis that the application of social reinforcement is related to a reduction in injuries.

It brings forward from the 1939 annual report information on the course of activities of the division in carrying out its objectives of increased conservation and better utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and related resources through a coordinated program of research and fact - finding . It discusses, also, special assignments. executed for other Government agencies, which in recent years have constituted a considerable part of the division's work ." . In the present national emergency, in which petroleum is so essential , many of the Bureau's research activities bear directly on the availability, conservation, and use of petroleum for national defense . Accordingly, during the past year attention has been focused for the most part.on.problems associated with the needs of national defense . Several long-time researches , which in themselves are potential sources of desirable knowledge , were judged to be of secondary importance under present conditions and accordingly were suspended . Studies also were oriented in line with rapidly changing conditions to meet the demand for accurate findings on short notice . The Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division has experiment stations at Bartlesville , Okla . , and Laramie, Wyo . , a field office at Dallas , Tex . , and a field office and laboratory at San Francisco , Calif . It also operates the Government helium plant near Amarillo , Tex. In addition to the helium operations , some of the petroleum and natural - gas research activities are conducted at the Amarillo plant .

In an attempt to develop a suitable precast concrete support for underground use, two different models (1955 and 1958) of a five-piece concrete set were designed, fabricated, and tested under adverse loading conditions. Model 1955 was designed to withstand an ultimate, uniformly distributed, vertical load equivalent to what a three-piece, 12- by 12-inch wood set of intermediate-grade Douglas fir would withstand. A design figure of 138,000 pounds for the vertical load was used on both the 1955 and 1958 models. In addition, the 1958 model was designed to withstand a uniform horizontal load of 7,000 pounds per foot and additional concentrated-point loading. The step- by-step design of each model is presented in the appendixes. A series of five destruction tests was conducted underground on the 1955 model, and results of the tests showed that the type and method of blocking were of major significance.
