The work-principle method was developed for theoretically resolving toxic fumes from non-ideal charge formulations. The whole description of a wanted process refers to macroscopic changes resulting from removing and imposing constraints that work one at a time to chronologically render trajectory terminal (key) states. The trajectory resolution utilizes a thermodynamic quasi-potential or negative work function, and numeric results require some appropriate standard thermodynamic (equilibrium) reaction code TDRC. The underlying method is unable to restrict reactions, tailor the work output or resolve states within the trajectory transitions, so the trajectory terminology is used somewhat figuratively. The work-principle model has the working fluid (reaction material) interacting with a tremendous reservoir (chamber air and walls), while forecasting the work performed upon a mechanical agent.

A model has been developed for sensitivity analysis of open pit bench blasting. The model simulates the cost effectiveness of various blasting designs in relation to the equipment used for drilling, loading, hauling and primary crushing. The simulations will give an indication of the optimum powder factor giving the lowest over-all costs for drilling, blasting, handling and crushing.

Commercial explosive use in China has been dominated by powdered AN-TNT mixes. Water gels and emulsions are now gaining market acceptance because they offer potential for better performance. Although raw material costs for emulsions initially may be more than AN-TNT mixes, the more expensive technology improves sensitization and leads to lower costs overall for mining operations. A recently completed study in northeast China compared microsphere-modified emulsions to AN-TNT and lower-cost emulsions. Testing of microsphere-modified emulsions at several pH levels indicated a high degree of stability and consistency of VOD. Using 42 mm blastholes in underground mines and 170 mm holes in sandstone open pit mining demonstrated the superior performance of glass microsphere sensitized emulsions. Comparisons of explosive cost, drilling cost, secondary blasting cost and muck pile profile were favorable to the microspheres-sensitized-emulsions. Noxious fumes with AN-TNT or with water-based systems that partially fail during detonation are also a concern. Efficient detonation of emulsion products sensitized with hollow spheres appears to reduce fume generation. Prolonged storage or exposure to water also is not a problem.

There is considerable evidence that more rational damage criteria need to be generated with regard to low-rise structures subjected to blasting vibrations. There is not sufficient basis for specifying a maximum ground particle velocity damage criterion such as 2 inches/second. A peak ground velocity guideline does not currently take into account a number of significant parameters, including the predominant frequencies of the ground motion excitation and the structure being excited. Although a number of states have adopted, or are adopting, maximum particle velocity criteria, such criteria have been ruled inadequate in certain legal decisions affecting blasting operations. The development of more rational damage criteria is thus of significant importance.

Flyrock is one of the most significant hazards associated with blasting in open pit mining, especially for blasting operations near communities. Flyrock can lead to severe injuries, fatalities, and property damage, compromising the license to operate. For this reason, defining exclusion zones is critical to ensure the safety of people and equipment. A very large radius will reduce the risk of flyrock; however, excessive exclusion zones can significantly impact the productivity of the operation and, in some cases, compromise the extraction of ore in critical sectors. Many mine sites use distances derived from pre-established standards, experiences from other mines, or still use simple methods for analysis, like recording blasts with a terrestrial camera and performing deterministic calculations to determine exclusion areas, applying an arbitrarily safety factor for people and equipment. In this paper we present a new approach that allows the calculation of the exclusion zone by measuring critical flyrock parameters with a high degree of accuracy through a new video analytics technology, this data then is used as input to calibrate probabilistic flyrock models to have more robust calculations, allowing optimized and safe exclusion zones. The proposed methodology leverages high-accuracy data and continuous monitoring to dynamically adjust D&B designs and exclusion zones, ensuring maximum safety without unnecessarily restricting operational efficiency. A case study is presented where the application of these new digital technologies allows precise prediction and control of flyrock trajectories, enhancing the accuracy of exclusion zone boundaries. In this case we successfully reduced the exclusion zone radius to 100m, allowing the ore extraction in a critical region close to the community safely. The study shows notable improvements in safety and productivity, including zero flyrock incidents and enhanced protection for nearby communities. The adaptive nature of these digital tools offers scalable solutions for various blasting environments. The paper concludes by recommending the integration of these tools into standard blasting protocols, highlighting the potential for widespread adoption in the industry to mitigate flyrock risks effectively.

Apogee Coal Company, DBA Arch of West Virginia, faced the challenge of drilling and blasting over one million cubic yards of high temperature overburden at its Ruffner surface operation near Logan, West Virginia. The overburden was removed above the Upper Five Block seam that was previously deep mined, abandoned, and later engulfed by fire. Borehole temperatures were measured above 700° F.

Drilling and blasting is an every day, sometimes routine activity, that is always fraught with catastrophic capabilities. Under the best conditions it is hazardous, time consuming and expensive. Under the worst conditions it may be impossible to perform by any but the most skilled specialists. Under all conditions drilling and/or blasting jobs are relatively difficult and require specialized equipment, materials and skills that are uncommon. Because of the marked human response to blast effects and inherent defects present in many modern structures the real possibility of being named as a defendant in a law suit faces most blasters. Thirty-seven open pit production blasting operations have been monitored using high-speed cameras running between 500 and 7000 frames per second. Analysis of the resulting films reveals irregularities in timing including sequencing errors and crowding (holes firing less than 8 ms apart), confirming results of laboratory testing of ms delay blasting caps (Winzer, 1978). Where blasting parameters are otherwise constant and within recommended guidelines (stemming, spacing, burden, etc.), timing problems dominate the overall performance of the blasting operation. Model tests in layered Homalite 100, designed to simulate joint or bedding planes in rock, indicate the importance of the stress waves generated by the explosive in developing the crack network which is ultimately responsible for the fragmentation seen in the resulting muckpile. These mechanisms are strongly supported by high-speed film studies at Pinesburg, Maryland. Experiments in controlling relief in deep shots (where depth approaches the lateral extent of the bench blasted) using borehole geometry and hybrid initiation systems (electronic timer and pyrotechnic delays) were carried out. The results suggest that the 1 me/ft. of burden guideline developed by Bergmann et aI., 1974 is too short, and that much longer times are necessary to optimize fragmentation and muck digability. Longer times are found to reduce noise, vibration, and flyrock.

Hong Kong is ranked as the world’s third most important international financial hub and attracts significant growth and development annually. The city is also known as the world's most vertical city, the most common view from your window in Hong Kong city centre is probably the window of another 30 storey skyscraper. The increasing demand for real estate in this bustling Metropolis has placed immense pressures on its transportation infrastructure because whilst the construction continuously grows upward with larger and larger skyscrapers, it leaves the transportation planners with very little choice but to go underground. As a first world city, interrupting daily business operations is simply not an option; however, of even greater concern is the safety of these 8 million residents. Blasting Regulations are under the strict control of the Mines Division showing zero tolerance to the breaching of safety standards. The Ho Man Tin Station (HOM) excavation, a part of the Kwun Tong Line Extension (KTE) project situated in Hong Kong began in June 2012 and is one such project that is under strict regulations from the Mines Division. The HOM project is a cross cut interchange station between the Kwun Tong Line Extension (KTE) and Shatin Central Link (SCL).

ABSTRACT : The Tournai’s region in Belgium is characterized by outcrops of limestone that were mined out long ago by different companies for cement and crushed materials. The region is densely populated and the vibrations generated by blasts in the quarries are of big concern. The occurrence of electronic detonators and development of computer sciences brought a new expectation in controlling the vibration level and, hence, carry out bigger blast operations. In this paper we present the results of two experimental blast programs that have been carried out by the Nobel explosive Belgium Company on the Gaurain-Ramecroix quarry to understand the effect of the delay on the vibrations generated in the neighborhood. The first program has been implemented during the early use of electronic caps in Belgium (1996) by performing some unit shots. An attempt to model the effect of the production blasts by the hybrid method (Hinzen 1988) gave promising but poor results compared to infield measurements. A new program (more than ten blasts) has been implemented in 2006 in which the delay and blast firing sequence (i.e. the order in firing adjacent holes in a row) have been changed; a new attempt is made to build unit signals by deconvolution and then try to model production ones. A comparison of the two approaches is made.

Operations using draglines to remove the overburden above coal seams have increasingly turned to cast blasting to improve productivity and reduce costs. Many such operations also employ active highwall pre- splitting to produce highwalls of well defined configuration, behind which the subsequent blast can be designed and implemented to maximize casting. In some cases isolating the block to be blasted allows water to drain out of the rock mass and provides the opportunity to use less costly explosives.

In this paper, the authors describe major changes in drilling and blasting methods instituted at the Zortman And Landusky Mining Company Properties to maintain the viability of these north central Montana surface mines in the present period of depressed precious metal prices. The authors explain how improved drilling procedures minimized problems due to uneven benches and floors. They also describe changes in explosives loading and delay blasting techniques which improved fragmentation, thus increasing metal recovery from heap leaching. Quantities were increased substantially and a new bulk explosives loading system was placed in service with a special down-the-hole bulk loading truck and storage facilities for bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion. At the same time, drill patterns were expanded by nearly 40%. The authors also describe a new technique of using explosives to selectively cast waste and ore in different directions so as to reduce the cost of separating the ore.

A major characteristic that distinguishes modern society from its predecessors is the understanding that events are not driven by the whims of the gods, pre-ordained fate or nature, but are controlled to a greater or lesser extent by the actions, (or inactions), of people. The study of risk assessment is the basis for determining risk or the likelihood of an event occurring combined with the consequences of that event if it does occur. This study is indubitably linked to the mathematics of probability and statistics which permits the quantification of risk. As the Industrial Revolution significantly increased the exposure of persons to new types of energy sources, materials, equipment, and means of more rapid transportation of goods and people, quantitative risk assessment became a vital tool in protecting workers and the general public exposed to these new technologies.
