"Extensive deposits of tectonically sheared coal of the Mist Mountain Formation occur in the south eastern Canadian Cordillera. The quality of the coal varies markedly; it is commonly partially oxidized and poor washability characteristics.Oxidation of the sheared coal has been promoted by its fine grain-size and by fractures in adjacent rocks which have facilitated penetration of atmospheric oxygen and circulation of oxygenated waters. Oxidation has resulted in a loss of coking power, a decrease in vitrinite reflectance, and an Increase In oxygen and decrease in carbon content.The relatively low clean coal yields of the sheared coal are primarily the result of the greater volume of mineral matter present, which in turn reflects both the greater susceptibility to shearing of coal with abundant rock partings and the shearing and dissemination throughout the coal of formerly discrete rock partings. The high ash content of some sheared coal seams may be artificial, resulting from the difficulty in distinguishing and separating sheared roof rock and floor strata from the coal seam during mining. There is little variation between the quality of the washed sheared and unsheared coal, with the exception of the somewhat higher ash content of the clean sheared coal compared to clean unsheared coal. This poorer separation of the ash from the organic fraction of the sheared coal is considered to be a product of the large amount of fines present as well as the local formation of aggregates of organic material and ash resulting from plastic flowage of the vitrite and clarite during shearing.IntroductionIn the southeastern Canadian Cordillera, coal seams of the Lower Cretaceous Mist Mountain Formation (Gibson, 1979 were in part sheared and comminuted during Late Cretaceous and Tertiary tectonism . Extensive deposits of sheared coal exist, and even in areas of mild deformation the coal may be locally sheared (Bustin, 1979). "A rank-map of Crowsnest coalfield, showing the distribution of the bituminous coal measures and the locations of major structures, has been produced from vitrinite reflectance measurements on over600coal samples. The timing of coalification in relation to these major structures has also been determined.In the west-central portion of the coalfield a complete stratigraphic succession of coal measures which rides on major thrust surf aces is all of high-volatile bituminous rank, but despite the structural discordance no break in rank is discernible across these structures. The thrust faults therefore predate much of the coalification.Three major valleys expose cross sections of the folded coal measures and in each an increase invitrinite reflectance is demonstrable as individual seams are traced from ridge crest to valley floor. Thus, in these sections, a significant amount of coalification post-dates folding. The proportion of this post-folding coalification is found to increase toward the south of the coalfield.A late gravity-fault, exposed along the east crop of the coalfield, places high-volatile coal-bearing successions in contact with low-volatile coal and demonstrably is a reactivated thrust fault. Coalification at this locality occurred between these two different ages of faulting.The variations in rank and the subtleties of the coalification pattern have, together with systematic changes in the maceral composition of coal seams, had a profound effect on coal quality in the coalfield. Coking coals with a variety of properties occur together with some coals that have no caking capacity."

"The auriferous mineralization at the Sigma-2 gold mine occurs in quartz-carbonate-tourmaline veins emplaced in a fractured granaphyre layer in the upper part of a differentiated gabbro-diorite sill. Kinematic indicators show that fracture planes were active as strike slip, dip-slip (reverse) and tensional faults.Measurements of attitudes of fractures and movement vectors indicate eight different sets that can be grouped into three systems: (I) an east-west oriented system includes a subvertical set and two other sets dipping north and south respectively; (2) a subhorizontal system of two conjugate sets bisected by a third tensional set; and (3)a system of sub vertical conjugate northeast and north-northwest trending sets.Kinematic analysis indicates that the subvertical set of the east west system was subjected to dextral strike-slip movement activated by a northwest-southeast compressive stress whereas the bulk deformation resulting from the remaining and subsequent seven sets can be explained by a protracted subhorizontal north-south compressive stress.The valuable gold mineralization is found principally in the fracture-filling veins of the subhorizontal system and subordinately in the other sets; among these other sets, the NE trending subvertical one is slightly more favourable.The over-all tectonic picture is that of an early mild dextral strike slip faulting in a ductile-brittle medium followed by a general flattening involving, first, a vertical and, later, a lateral extension by fracturing in a medium that had become brittle.The structural features are such that the differentiated sill could not be the source of the auriferous hydrothermal solutions."

"The McDame chrysotile asbestos deposit located near Cassiar in northern British Columbia isfound at depth and on trend to the southeast of the currently mined open-pit Cassiar asbestos deposit. The ultramafic rock hosting the McDame is serpentinized peridotite of the Upper Paleozoic Sylvester Group contained in an ophiolitic sequence preserved within a lower thrust sheet of the Sylvester Allochthon. The Sylvester stratigraphic package is a series of thrust slices composed of argillite, tuff and volcanic flows, diorite and serpentinite. Contacts between units are often fault-controlled.The McDame asbestos-bearing ultramafite is considered to represent a separate interleaved fault-bounded slice of rock distinct from the Cassiar asbestos deposit.Asbestos mineralization of the McDame deposit was discovered in /978. Exploration during /980 and /98/ focused on extensive underground drilling of the deposit and in /983 on geological mapping, airborne and ground magnetic surveys. In /984 a 622.5 m borehole was drilled with a 242 m intersection of McDame ultramafite of which the lower 15/ metres contain potentially economic chrysotile asbestos. The McDame deposit averages 90 m thick, trends north-south, dips easterly and plunges southeasterly. The deposit is estimated to contain geological reserves in the order of 62 million tonnes containing asbestos fibre similar in value to the Cassiar deposit.The McDame is considered a major world-class asbestos deposit. A decision to develop and mine the deposit will require further substantial underground exploration and evaluation. A + 1200 m exploration adit driven to the hanging wall of the deposit was undertaken in 1985 in anticipation of bulk sampling and diamond drilling in 1986."

This article summarizes some of the principal features of the taxation of industrial mineral mining in Canada. Where the rules applicable to such operations differ from those pertaining to the production and processing of precious and base meta s (non-industrial minerals), the two sets of rules are compared. If a conclusion could be drawn from such an over-all comparison, it may be that the total tax burden on an industrial mineral mine can be considerably more onerous than on both base meta mining operations and manufacturing profits.

"Whitehorse Copper is a 2600-ton-per-day underground copper mine located within the city limits of Whitehorse, Yukon . In early 1978, due to increasingly difficult ground conditions. it was decided to investigate the conversion from longhole open stoping to vertical crater retreat mining. On-site crater testing by C-I-L demonstrated the feasibility of V.C.R. mining at Whitehorse Copper.After some investigation. a down-the-hole drilling rig was chosen and drilling began in November /978. Blasting began in June /979. and to September 1980 approximately one million tons of ore had been blasted. In-field changes to both drilling and blasting techniques have been implemented. Some of these changes were dictated by problems encountered; others were made to improve efficiencies.To date. V.C.R. mining has proven successful from a drilling and blasting aspect.IntroductionWhitehorse Copper Mines Ltd ., a division of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited , is a 2600-Lp.d. underground copper mine. The plant site is located I mile west of the Alaska Highway, and approximately 7 miles south of Whitehorse city center. Production is from the Little Chief orebody, and total output is from vertical crater retreat stopes.The Little Chief and Middle Chief orebodies at Whitehorse Copper had original reserves in excess of 6 million tons, most of which graded 2.00/0 copper or higher . The orebodies are typical skarn deposits that have developed along the contact between an intrusive diorite and a limestone-quartzite flank pendant. The limestone has been metasomatized to form a calcium-magnesium skarn which, along the limestone / quartzite contact, has locally further developed into a mineralized magnetite-serpentine skarn. The principal copper minerals are bornite and chalcopyrite, with minor chalcocite and valleriite. Skarn gangue minerals are serpentine, diopside, garnet, epidote, calcite and wollastonite. Appreciable values in gold with some silver are present and recovered as well."

"In kraft pulp mills, the spent pulping liquor is concentrated and used as fuel in the recovery boiler. Extensive deposits are formed in the upper section of the boiler due to the very high ash content of the fuel and the volatite nature of the ash. Deposits are composed of Na2S04, Na2C03 NaCI, some potassium salts and reduced sulphur compounds. Chloride and potassium salts are enriched in the deposits compared to the smelt due to their greater volatility.Severe corrosion of the superheater tubes in a recovery boiler has been traced to three factors: a non-uniform temperature profile in the flue gas, relatively high operating steam temperatures and high chIoride and potassium concentrations in the fireside deposits.The role of chIoride and potassium in superheater corrosion has been explained by increased Iiquid phase in deposits. Together with corrosion studies, this information has shown that kraft recovery boiler superheater corrosion due to the chloride and potassium enriched deposits can be avoided by proper boiler operation and by judicious superheater and furnace design.IntroductionThis investigation of recovery boiler superheater corrosion was initiated by the discovery of severe corrosion of the final stage superheater in a Canadian closed cycle kraft pulp mill(1,2). Metal wastage leading to tube failure was believed to be due to three major causes : the relatively high operating steam temperatures, the uneven distribution of flue gas temperature across the boiler which created a "" hot spot"" and the high chloride and potassium concentrations in the superheater fire side deposit. The mill responded to the problem by i) lowering the superheater steam temperature from 475°C to 380°C, ii) minimizing the chloride content in the spent pulping liquor, by controlling the NaCI input with recovered bleach plant effluent, and iii) changing metallurgy of a portion of the bottom section of the final stage superheater platens from ferritic steel T-22 (2.25% Cr, 1% Mo) to austenitic steel Incoloy 800H (21% Cr, 32% Ni, 46% Fe, 1.5% Mn, 1% Si, 0.6% Al) (Fig. 1). "La Mine Bousquet commenced operations in October 1979. Mining has been by underground methods from two main zones which dip steeply to the south , Sub-level stoping methods with following fill are used.The orebody and immediate country rocks are sericitic and highly schistose. The intensity of schistosity varies significantly and poor ground conditions prevail, especially within the orebody,Initially few mining problems were encountered but in May 1981, significant damage occurred. A system of stabilizing pillars was introduced with improved support systems. Predevelopment in ore and pre-drilling of blastholes were reduced with extra footwall development.Damage has continued to occur on a regular basis particularly during the spring thaw. Generally, the adverse conditions have been successfully overcome.IntroductionMost of the mining problems that have been experienced at Bousquet have been caused by poor ground conditions . This pa per describes these conditions, considers the cause and describes the ways in which the conditions have been dealt with . Despite the problems, Bousquet is a successful operation which in 1983 produced 95,000 ozs of gold from 514,000 tons of ore."

"Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining operates a uranium mine at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan. The project consists of one open pit and one underground mining operation along with a full-scale milling installation.The underground stoping operations are of the narrow vein type and are done between two levels 50 m apart. The mining method is undercut with concrete backfilling. Cuts are 3.5 m in height and can be as narrow as 1.4 m in width.Stoping operations are mechanized utilizing a CT-500E electric Microscoop marketed in Canada by Teledyne. The machine is only 85 cm in width and does all the mucking in stopes. Ore passes are provided in stope roughly every 40 m to 50 m.This paper describes the utilization of the CT-500E Microscoop in the company's underground operations and provides performance data related to the experience.IntroductionThe Amok Ltd ./Cluff Mining operation is located in the northwestern corner of Saskatchewan. The project started in 1980 with open pit mining and milling operations. In 1983, an underground mining operation began production . Today, the Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining installation produces 800 tonnes of uranium per year , which originates from both the open pit and the underground mine at about the same proportion."
