In these days, when mass production seems to be the watchword of all industrial companies, nothing is left undone to attain this end. Transportation, where necessary, becomes a question of very great importance. For this reason every mechanical contrivance known to man is employed, with its resultant advantages. So successful has man's ingenuity been that, offhand, we are inclined to say that practically all transportation ?On a large scale is done mechanically, that is, where speed and economy are desiderata. Granting this, one would think that to read a paper on the horse before your honourable and highly technical Society would surely be a waste of time, and that any Company employing old-fashioned 'horse' power would certainly be very much behind the time, to say the least. However, the fact remains that the biggest industry in our country today-coal mining-must use horse power to a great extent, being compelled both by considerations of economy and by necessity. For this reason,' in the production of coal under present conditions, the pit horse is of great importance to this industry and is to be considered seriously as one of the units that help to make coal mining a success or a failure. Hence, in employing horses as a power for transportation, care must be exercised in selecting the animals, and the care of this power must be considered as seriously as any other department of such an organization. In selecting a pit horse, several things must be borne in mind, that is, one must get as much horse power as possible in as compact a form is practicable. This determines the type of horse we must use, which is of very great importance under our present conditions of coal mining. With low roof, steep grades, and forced production, a distinct type of animal must be selected.

The Central Manitoba mining district, as spoken of in Manitoba, refers to that portion of the country lying between lake Winnipeg on the west and the Ontario boundary on the east, and from a few miles north of the Wanipigow (or Hole) river on the north, to a few miles south of the Bird river. It embraces two known mineralized belts; the gold area in the north, extending from the shores of lake Winnipeg almost to the Ontario boundary (in a slightly southeasterly direction) a zone some eight or ten miles wide and perhaps forty miles long, lying (for the most part) north, and parallel to, the Manigotagan river; and the Bird river copper and coppernickel deposits, an area not yet clearly defined, but in general lying immediately north of, and roughly parallel to, the Bird river. To the south of the Bird river is a somewhat differently mineralized area, numerous pegmatite dykes being found, with minerals typically associated with such rocks. More specifically, the known gold deposits are largely segregated in the above belt; (1) around English brook; (2) along the north shore of Wanipigow lake; the Rice lake area (about midway of the belt); and the Long Lake-Bulldog lake area, at the eastern end of the belt. Not all the known gold occurences are found in these segregations, but the density of claim staking in these areas is perhaps an indication of the greater number of prospects found in them to date.

"The property is about 120 miles north of Red Lake in the Favourable Lake area, district of Kenora ( Patricia part) , Ontario. The original discovery was staked by K. Murray in December, 1927. The first development work was done by the Favourable Lake Mining and Exploration Company. In 1936 Newmont Mining Corporation acquired control of the property and developed it to production by September, 1939. Production to the end of 1945 had a value of $7,534,656 from 441,457 tons of ore, an average value of $17.04 a ton . This production was mainly from gold and silver, with lead and zinc of subordinate importance.The rocks in the vicinity of the mine trend in a north-south direction. From east to west the sequence is: (1) A dark-coloured, massive rock, presumably a flow, composed mainly of quartz and biotite. ( 2) A buff- coloured, scricitized rock locally containing quartz phenocrysts and black hornblende. This is an alteration product of the dark variety and is later than the folding. It occurs mainly within the dark rock. (3) A series of sediments comprising thin beds of greywacke, grit, quartzite, conglomerate, and iron formation. ( 4) A gabbro sill, now largely altered to amphibolite.With the exception of the buff type, these rocks dip 80°E. The buff rock has a very irregular outline in comparison with the other rocks and appears to dip somewhat more flatly east. Felsite and diorite dykes are also present. These have a general strike of S.60°E. and dip 65°S .W. A post-ore diorite dyke trending N.15°E. occurs about 2,000 feet east of the mine area."

"In Catalonia, between the 10th century and 1878, some installations were developed which at first were called ""factories"" and later ""fargas"", since they manufactured iron and steel of low carbon content. Because of its excellent quality, the fame of this metal spread from Catalonia to many countries. Fargas were started in Corsica, the Low Countries, Germany, Oriental India, Madagascar, Finland and along the rivers Orinoco and Mississippi among others. The extractive process used in these fargas has passed into history as the ""Catalan Farga Process"", ""Catalan Process"", or just ""Farga Catalana"". With this technology, raw material was obtained for the fabrication of tools, nails, weapons, grilles, etc. to supply the national and export markets. Aside from meteorites and native iron, found as metallic nodules in basalts in Greenland and Palestine, the ancient civilizations, which had no means to reach the fusion temperature of iron (1535°C), obtained iron by a direct process. Similar processes were used until quite recently (1930s) by certain tribes in Central Africa; holes in the ground were filled with iron ore and coal, and combustion encouraged by blowing air by mouth or with bellows made of animal skins. Thus without melting the iron it is possible to reduce the mineral and obtain a porous and impure metallic mass, which is purified on forging by mechanical squeezing. With a process very likely similar, the famous column at Dehli weighing 6.4 m.t. was built about 300 B.C."

"The Part of the Eastern Townships dealt with in this paper is shown in the accompanying figure. Each rectangle represents one of the topographic maps published by the Department of National Defence on a scale of one mile to one inch. Each sheet covers an area approximately 24 miles long and 17 miles wide, or slightly more than 400 square miles. The north-western part of the area figured, comprising the Upton, Aston, Becancour, and the two unnamed sheets, (Three Rivers and Yamaska), together with most of the Lyster, Drummondville, and St. Hyacinthe sheets, is largely covered by clays and sands deposited in interglacial and post-glacial time in the Champlain estuary, so that outcrops are widely scattered and in-formation is correspondingly sketchy. In the remainder of the area figured, comprising more than 4,000 square miles, outcrops are reasonably numerous and have been mapped on a scale of one mile to one inch, and the structure is moderately well understood.The Eastern Townships was an area of intense orogenic disturbance, apparently beginning late in the Cambrian or early in the Ordovician, and continuing till well on in the Devonian period. During this long period, which may have lasted for a hundred million years or more, the area was subjected from time to time to intense thrusts from the east and southeast. Each of these caused folding of the rocks, accompanied by faulting, raised parts of the area above sea-level, and presumably created ranges of mountains. Long periods of erosion cut away the mountains and reduced the area nearly to sea-level after which subsidence carried it below sea-level, and permitted further sediments to accumulate before the next thrust initiated the next cycle.The first of these movements, as stated, appears to have been in late Cambrian or early Ordovician time. The group of rocks known as Caldwell was folded and, south and east of the town of Asbestos, was thrown into great drag-folds before deposition of the next overlying series, termed the Beauceville, began. Unfortunately, the date of this orogeny is very imperfectly known, because both series of rocks have been so crushed and sheared that almost all fossil remains have been destroyed. Graptolites, found in one place in slates generally considered Beauceville, give that series a tentative Middle Ordovician age. In the Caldwell rocks, which underlie the Beauceville with great unconformity, no fossils whatever have yet been found. Thus, if the Beauceville rocks are correctly dated as mid-Ordovician, the best that can be said of the movement folding the Caldwell is that it took place at some time before Middle Ordovician."

"THE PROPERTY of Rexspar Uranium and Metals Mining Co. Limited is situated within 3 miles of Birch Island, British Columbia, a village on the C.N.R. main line 80 miles north of Kamloops. The claims extend up the south slope of the North Thompson River valley.Prospecting in the area dates back many years. Fluorite was reported in 1918, lead showings in 1926, and bog manganese in 1929. Diamond drilling in 1942-43 indicated more than a million tons of material containing 20 per cent fluorite and 15 per cent celestite in what is known as the 'fluorite zone'. Marketing and beneficiation difficulties have delayed further development of this deposit.Systematic checking of specimens and drill core by the B.C. Department of Mines and the Geological Survey of Canada revealed low radio-activity in the fluorite zone material. Subsequent prospecting with Geiger counters revealed zones of higher radioactivity a few hundred feet distant from the fluorite zone. The property at this stage came under the development direction of Technical Mine Consultants Limited, who undertook a program of diamond drilling. Of the several radioactive zones located, two have so far rewarded development and appear to constitute low-grade uranium orebodies. These are referred to as the ""Black Diamond"" or ""BD"", and the ""A"" zones -see section. Open-pit mining of the thick, dip-slope orebodies appears possible.General GeologyWalker (1) describes the local rocks as metamorphosed sediments cut by granodioritic intrusives and by greens tone. At the property the sequence is:GreenstoneUnconformity or intrusive contact Trachytic member -tuffs, breccia, flows. Argillite -black, thin, not always present. Schist -thin-bedded sericitic quartzite and siltstone with some calcareous layers."

GOLD mining in Nova Scotia, as in any other gold district, has its own peculiar problems. Being in close proximity to excellent roads and to railways, and being blessed with good labour, the majority of gold mines in the Province find their paramount trouble is geological, namely, ore finding. After six years of continuous mining at Goldenville, the staff of Guysborough Mines, Limited, has collected many facts, has come to some definite conclusions, and has made a lot of guesses, some good and some bad. It is the purpose of this paper to set down such information as we have been able to gain in the hope that it may prove useful to other operators, present and future, faced with similar problems. What may be true of one Nova Scotian mine will not necessarily be true of another, so that the observations that follow should be considered as primarily applicable to Goldenville. Stated facts, conclusions, and theories are the result of the combined thought and effort of Head Office officials, of members of the Provincial and Federal Departments of Mines, and of members of the mine staff, past and present. "I am very pleased to be a member on this panel today because abrasion and wear in mills has been part of my life over the past forty years. My presentation will deal with the role Ni-Hard has played in combating wear and abrasion in mills. Before Ni-Hard came along, unalloyed white iron was used in ball mills and one of the most popular types of white iron liners was the pocket liner. Slide #1 illustrates the design of the pocket liner used at Dome Mines in their 5' x 22' pebble mills. The pockets filled with grinding media and it was on this that the wear took place. The concept is not unlike the new magnetic liner which utilizes the ore and grinding media to form the wearing surface. In this slide please note the tapered pocket type of cored bolt holes. If cored bolt holes do not fill with grinding media there could be excessive grooving or wear at that area. Therefore all cored bolt holes should be tapered in this manner.Before Inco patented the name Ni-Hard several foundries were making the alloy iron under different brand names such as Diamond Alloy, Mitchelloy and Specialloy. In the early days some of the Ni-Hard was poor quality. Inco provided foundries with technical knowhow and provided assistance to licence them to sell under the name of Ni-Hard. This was in the late 1920's. The material we are discussing is Ni-Hard type I with the following analysis (slide #2). It is a martensitic white iron with BHN of 550 - 600 and is a relatively easy alloy to produce in either a cupola or electric furnace. The annual average production of Ni-Hard in North America is 90,000 tons with mill liners making up 25,000 tons and grinding media 30,000 tons, according to Warren Spear of Inco."

Numerous rock blasting design methodologies have been developed over the years, relating either to the primary objectives of blasting, such as the size distribution of the blasted material, or to its undesirable side effects, such as damage to the remaining rock mass. All existing methodologies, while of use, do have serious shortcomings. The question remains whether further improvements can be achieved in the field of practical rock blasting engineering. One approach that seems to hold promise is the relatively new matrix-based rock engineering systems (RES) methodology. It has been conceptually demonstrated that RES could be efficiently adapted to blasting. A brief overview of rock blasting design techniques and their main shortcomings is followed by the basic concepts governing rock engineering systems and a discussion on their pertinence to blasting. The paper concludes with a review of current efforts to develop a useful practical blast design tool using RES. SOMMAIRE Le potentiel d?application des systèmes d?ingénierie du roc aux tirs à l?explosif. De nombreuses méthodologies de conception d?abattage du roc à l?explosif ont été développées au cours des années, qui ont adressé soit les principaux objectifs des tirs, comme par exemple la granulométrie du matériel dynamité, soit ses effets secondaires indésirables, tels les dommages au massif rocheux. Toutes les méthodes existantes fonctionnent dans une certaine mesure et sont utiles - elles sont cependant pour ainsi dire toutes affectées par des limitations ou défauts plus ou moins sévères. The Murray Brook massive sulfide deposit, which was the first geochemical discovery in the Bathurst camp, is one of the largest sulfide deposits in the area. The massive sulfides are hosted by quartzose metasedimentary rocks in the lower part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. This thick succession of sedimentary rocks is overlain conformably by felsic volcanic rocks, and is structurally overlain by mafic volcanic rocks. The massive-sulfide body is polydeformed, but primary metal zoning is still discernable and may permit future exploitation of discrete lead-zinc and copper zones. Although it was discovered in 1956, the deposit was not developed until 1989, when Murray Brook Resources commenced processing of gossan containing precious metals. Recovery of gold, silver, and mercury is accomplished by indoor vat leaching on a year-round basis.

The mechanism of thiosulfate decomposition and the products formed were investigated in the presence of pyrite or pyrrhotite in copper-ammonia solutions used for leaching gold. The presence of the sulfides significantly increased the decomposition of thiosulfate. The sulfide-surface-catalyzed oxidation of thiosulfate to tetrathionate by dissolved oxygen or the cupric tetra-ammine complex was proposed to be the dominant thiosulfate decomposition mechanism. The catalysis of the sulfides in this reaction could originate from their strong affinity for aqueous sulfur species and their semiconducting properties. Oxygen was found to be the initial driving force for thiosulfate decomposition in the absence of cupric ions and the driving force for the continuous decomposition of thiosulfate in the presence of cupric ions. Under an oxygen free atmosphere, the decomposition of thiosulfate was limited to reduce the cupric ions and the catalytic effect of the sulfides was also marginal. The dominant oxidative product of thiosulfate was trithionate in alkaline solutions especially in an oxygen rich or cupric ion rich environment. Tetrathionate was found in relatively smaller amounts in an oxygen and cupric ion deficient environment. Tetrathionate was not stable and would further decompose after extended periods. Trithionate concentrations increased almost linearly with time.

The Codelco Norte Smelter process 2,500 tpd of arsenic-bearing concentrates with an arsenic content of up to 1.5% in one of its two main smelting units, the Teniente Converter. The product, 1,100 tpd high-grade matte or white metal, is traditionally fed to the PS converters, while the 1,700 tpd of slag is fed to the slag cleaning electric furnace for copper recovery. This is achieved in a very reductive environment which reduces the viscosity of the slag and enhances the sedimentation of the high-grade matte droplets. The behavior of arsenic in this non-oxidative environment was studied at lab-scale and fundamental thermodynamic data were obtained. Based on these data a thermodynamicbase model to assess the arsenic behavior in reductive environment was developed. It is based on a mass balance for the reduction and sedimentation stages performed in an electric furnace which allows the recovery of high-grade matte droplets after decreasing the viscosity of the slag. This model can be a very suitable tool for predicting fractional distribution of arsenic in the slag cleaning electric furnace, when the distribution ratio, vapor saturation degree, temperature, y As and pO2 are given.

Double-edge-notched flat tensile samples of X70 steel were used for both slow strain-rate testing (SSRT) and cyclic loading testing with the notch located in the zone of interest, i.e., the weld metal (WM), base metal (BM) and heat affected zone (HAZ). By using both optical and scanning electron microscopy, the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behaviour with respect to crack morphology and various forms of microstructure was investigated. In all the samples considered, the mode of failure was predominantly transgranular with cleavage facets around the edges of the fracture surface. The BM, with a bainitic microstructure, had the highest resistance to SCC when compared with the mixed microstructures of acicular ferrite-primary ferrite and acicular ferrite-grain boundary ferrite observed in the WM and HAZ, respectively. The effect of microstructure on stress corrosion cracking behaviour is discussed based on experimental observations.

A thermodynamic description of the equilibrium in liquid and gas phases under specific conditions of refractory gold pressure oxidation was generated using the HKF theory. The gold behavior was considered at 190-225°C in the presence of 1-100 mg/L of chloride ion, and under oxidationreduction potential (ORP) of +700 to +1030 mV. The calculations show that the predominant form of gold(I) occurrence is [AuOH]° compared to [AuCl2]?. High ORP favors the formation of [AuCl4]? as a predominant form of gold(III). It is noted that this complex is responsible for the gold losses buildup during POX. Laboratory test results for double refractory concentrate POX are shown. The combined negative effect of (i) organic carbon of the concentrate and (ii) dissolved chlorides in POX slurry on gold recovery is demonstrated. The effects of carbonate blending to the POX feed concentrate and incomplete oxidation of sulfides on POX performance were studied. The pilot tests results of continuous pressure oxidation are also shown and generally confirm the laboratory results and theoretic dependencies. A comparison of the experimental data with the results of thermodynamic calculations is made. As a result of current research, an effective process for POX treatment of carbonaceous sulfide concentrates in the presence of chlorides was developed.

"A t remote locations typical of mines and associated ore processing plants, diesel electric generators are ideally suited for power plants due to their inherent operating flexibility, efficiency and reliability. In recent years rapid escalation in fuel and related transportation costs has made extensive waste heat recovery from generating sets financially attractive to a much greater extent than previously.The paper outlines key considerations during planning and design stages for utilizing the various waste heat sources available to best advantage. Based on two /980 mining projects built in the Canadian Arctic, data is presented on potential operating and capital costs savings. A review of heat balances, engineering flow diagrams and major equipment selections for process and building heating systems utilizing waste heat is included.IntroductionResource projects increasingly occur in remote areas requiring on-site self sufficiency in electrical power generation. For such projects, the low- or medium-speed turbo-charged diesel engine is very often the preferred choice as a prime mover for the generating sets . It is inherently reliable, has good response to load changes and has comparatively high fuel efficiency over a wide load range . From a project execution standpoint, It is capital cost- competitive and procurement lead-time normally ' fits ' within tight schedule constraints. In addition, its potential for waste heat recovery is excellent , particularly in northern climates where space heating requirements are usually substantial, and also where there a re requirements for heat for process and plant services.The high cost of fuel , with add-on transportation costs , provides a major incentive to fully exploit the available waste heat recovery potential o f such installations.As a result of the rapid escalation in the price of petroleum products following major crude oil price increases in 1973 and again in 1978-79, liquid petroleum fuels, having the desirable properties of comparatively high heat content and transportability, are no longer 'cheap' commodities and have become so valuable that industry has widely undertaken serious conservation efforts.Currently, it appears that petroleum cost trends of the 1970s may not continue, at least in the near term, and that we may see somewhat reduced energy costs for a time. In the longer term , and certainly within the life spa n of major projects, however, it is generally believed to be inevitable that these fuels will be increasingly expensive . Energy costs are today a major operating cost for remote minerals processing plants and will remain so for the foreseeable future.In order to meet the economic challenge posed by high energy costs, future projects should be thoughtfully planned from the outset with the goal of minimizing energy requirements and maximizing the use of waste heat recovery to meet such requirements. There is also considerable potential for significant energy savings by retrofitting of existing installations."

Multiphase steels are quite sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement. Laboratory tests to evaluate this often use electrochemical, charging to introduce hydrogen into the sample, but damage purely caused by hydrogen charging has to be avoided. A ferrite-bainite steel, was charged using various conditions to identify when surface blisters occurred. Samples were also checked for internal, damage by electron microscopy. This study was repeated for three other multiphase steels and pure iron. An HSLA steel, was found to be more resistant whereas pure iron was quite susceptible to internal, hydrogen damage. For al, industrial, steels, cracks concentrated in the middle of the sample were attributed to inclusions and segregations, inherent to production.

For a dilute and neutral solution (NS4) simulating ground water in contact with the steel, semi-elliptical cracks grow faster on the surface (2c) than in the depth (a), hence, the aspect ratio (a/c) decreases. This is explained using a deterministic concept since corrosion is dominant and the primary constraint is the conservation of charge. By contrast, when mechanistic conditions prevail, significant growth occurs in the depth. When underloads are imposed in the loading history, temporary accelerations in crack growth occur because corrosion rather than mechanical effects become dominant.
