To simulate adequately the behaviour of a Hall-Heroult electrolysis cell, a finite element model must take into account the properties of each material. However, it has some lacking knowledge on the mechanical behaviour of materials, like the long-term visco-elastic (creep/relaxation) behaviour of cathode. A three-dimensional model is then proposed in this paper and will be ready to be implemented in the finite element code FESh++. The model was developed using the three-dimensional model based on thermodynamic of irreversible processes where the choice of the internal variables is based on a phenomenological approach. All parameters of the model are represented by constant constitutive tensors and the temperature and chemical dependencies are taking into account through scalar functions multiplying the constant constitutive tensor. The goal of the first part of this project was to determine the parameters of the threedimensional visco-elastic model at the reference state (virgin material at ambient temperature) of three different cathode materials. This paper presents the theoretical model and the results of creep tests at ambient temperature for the semi-graphitic carbon cathode.

Abstract- Approaches to mineral potential mapping based on weights of evidence generally use binary maps, whereas, real-world geospatial data are mostly multi-class in nature. The consequent reclassification of multi-class maps into binary maps is a simplification that might result in a loss of information. This paper describes results of using multi-class evidential maps in an extended weights-of-evidence model vis-à-vis results of using binary evidential maps in a simple-weights-ofevidence model. The study area in the south-central part of Aravalli province (western India) hosts a number of SEDEX-type base metal deposits in Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. Recognition criteria for base metal deposits were represented as both multi-class and binary evidential maps. The known mineral deposits were divided into two subsets, viz., the training and the validation subsets. The training subset was used to calculate, for the evidential maps, the weights, contrasts, and posterior probabilities and their variances. The distributions of expected frequencies of base metal deposits estimated from the posterior probabilities and the observed frequencies were compared using standard goodness-of-fit tests to verify conditional independence of the input evidential maps. The posterior probabilities from both the models were mapped and interpreted to classify the study area into zones favorable, permissive, and non-permissive for base metal deposit occurrence. As compared to the simple weights-of-evidence model, the extended weights-of-evidence model results in more robust and finely differentiated posterior probabilities in favorable and permissive zones and has a better prediction rate. The results also reveal that the statistical properties of the weights of evidence, the contrasts, and the posterior probabilities are not significantly degenerated by using multi-class evidential maps in weights-of-evidence modelling.

"Reactive pyrrhotite tailings were agglomerated using the Cold Bond Tailings Agglomeration (CBTA) process with low cost binders; Portland Cement and fly ash. Various chemical additives, were used to retard acid mine drainage (AMD), including acid neutralizers, surfactants, sealants, and bactericides, which were encapsulated into the agglomerates. The choice of these additives was based on their low cost, low toxicity, and environmental friendliness. The main objective of the study was to examine the long term stability of these reactive tailings agglomerates towards AMD when used as aggregates for disposal in underground paste backfill.A carefully controlled kinetic stability test was carried out using specially designed humidity cells suitable for testing pellets. Using the humidity cell test method a 20-30 year AMD test may be accelerated to 50 weeks. During this period the following parameters were monitored: pH, redox potential, conductivity, sulphate, acidity, and dissolved metals.Results indicated that most of the encapsulated additives were successful in retarding AMD, while the control samples produced significant amounts of acid generation. The water soluble surfactant Enviroseal, and the sodium silicate sealant were very effective as a long term retardant for acid generation reactions in the sulphidic tailings when exposed to oxygen, water and iron-oxidizing bacteria.IntroductionThe sulphidic material discharged from concentrators becomes reactive upon exposure to air and/or water. Pyrrhotite (Fe0 S0_1) and pyrite tailings in particular which are discharged from the beneficiation process in the mining and mineral processing activities consist of finely ground particles. Upon exposure to oxygen and moisture, the tailings become reactive due to the instability of the metal sulphide minerals present which undergo spontaneous oxidation, thereby producing a weak sulphuric acid. Therefore, the long-term behaviour of the tailings can have a significant impact on the environment, due to acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is created during natural atmospheric weathering when leaching action (natural and bacterial) conditions are present in the process wastes discarded during the mining and milling of sulphur bearing ores, and consequently it plays a major role in surface water chemistry."

Even though many approaches have been proposed for automated fault detection and diagnosis of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and advanced maintenance programs, such as preventive and predictive maintenance have been applied for the systems, issuing work orders for corrective maintenance is still a reality. Currently corrective maintenance still accounts for more than 55% of all maintenance programs in average facilities in the US (DoE, 2010). Indoor air related problems are especially important among corrective maintenance work orders. This paper provides details of a case study conducted to capture the workflow that HVAC mechanics follow, their rationale in diagnosis process and the information they typically refer to while responding to indoor air related corrective maintenance work orders. The general workflow for HVAC mechanics to complete such types of work orders was summarized into 5 stages, and generic information requirements recorded from the case study were synthesized. Initial findings show two main challenges in the industry for HVAC mechanics to get access to required information, which highlights the need for a systematic approach that would enable identification of such information applicable to a given context under which a work order has been generated and provide values of required information for HVAC mechanics to do sound diagnosis through integrated data repositories.

La découverte de nouveaux gisements métallifères constitue le point de départ du développement de l'industrie minérale. Or, au cours de ces dernières années, le nombre de ces découvertes a fortement diminué dans les territoires classiquement explorés, entraînant une recrudescence de l?exploration dans les terrains géologiques de grade métamorphique élevé (e.g., Province de Grenville, Grand Nord du Québec). Ces derniers ont été traditionnellement considérés comme stériles à cause (i) de la monotonie apparente des gneiss qui les composent, (ii) de la difficulté d?identifier leurs protolites, (iii) des changements importants dans l?apparence des gîtes recherchés reliés au fort degré de déformation et de métamorphisme et (iv) des théories qui prônent un lessivage important des cations et des métaux d?intérêt économique par les processus de déshydratation des roches lors du métamorphisme régional (Weaver et Tarney, 1985; Vokes, 2000). Cependant, l?avancée des connaissances dans la compréhension des gîtes métallifères et de leurs terrains hôtes gneissiques intensément métamorphisés, montre que les systèmes géochimiques des roches altérées demeurent robustes (p. ex. ; Trägårdh, 1991; Craig et Vokes, 1993; Geringer et al., 1994; Schandl et al., 1995; Zaleski et Peterson, 1995; Vokes, 2000; Blein et al., 2003, sous presse). Bien sûr, les sulfures peuvent être localement remobilisés et même fondre, mais cette remobilisation n?implique pas forcément la disparition du gîte hôte (Williams, 1990) et peut s?avérer, bien au contraire, bénéfique pour la rentabilité d?un gîte en augmentant sa teneur en minerais (Marshall et al., 2000). Jusqu?à présent, dans les terrains métamorphiques, les contextes sédimentaires et plutoniques ont été reconnus et respectivement explorés pour les gîtes de type SEDEX et les gîtes magmatiques de Ni-Cu. L?étude de gîtes de métaux de base et précieux intensément métamorphisés (faciès des granulites) et leur comparaison avec des gîtes équivalents peu on non métamorphisés a permis d?établir, au cours des dernières décennies, des outils pour l?exploration des terrains de haut-grade métamorphique (Vokes, 1991, 2000; Slack et al., 1993; Spry et al., 2000). Ces outils sont basés sur la reconnaissance de roches diagnostiques d?une circulation ou d?une exhalation de fluides hydrothermaux telles que les méta-exhalites (formation de fer, coticules, tourmalinites, roches riches en quartz-gahnite, en apatite, en barite ou en staurolite zincifère) (Spry, 2000; Spry et al., 2000). Ils sont utilisés constamment dans les ceintures supracrustales riches en roches métasédimentaires.

In Japan, where confined geographies and stringent environmental regulations are enforced, alternative solutions for disposal or reprocessing of waste material had to be found.High-density mineral reclamation system designed by theoretical formulas is almost impossible because solids composition, i.e. concentration, velocity, moisture content, solid size, etc. can only be controlled within a broad pumping range.Traditionally this has restricted dredging of material to relatively dilute slurries whereas it is usually preferred to reduce water usage with its associated power and reclamation costs to a minimum and reclaim as high a concentration as possible.At Toyo Pumps North America we recognized these pumping limitations and began to develop and manufacture a range of standard and auxiliary equipment that would exceed these technical restrictions."

ABSTRACT: Drawing on past research experience with sprayable polymer mine support agents (TSLs), Spray On Plastics Ltd. has developed a TSL ground support system called RockWeb. Using a relatively new polyurea polymer technology, RockWeb has been engineered to solve problems encountered underground with polyurethane liners by incorporating rapid curing, moisture insensitivity and superior physical performance. RockWeb possesses a unique, patented ability to be sprayed in a ?cobweb? like consistency allowing the applicator to span fissures in the rock, ensuring no initial defects in the liner, and maintaining design thickness over highly irregular surfaces. This ability, coupled with the high strength and elasticity of polyurea, allows RockWeb to mitigate rock movement through yielding, while maintaining intimate surface confinement. RockWeb provides reduction in logistics through the transport of 1/25 of the material quantities required for shotcrete, rapid deployment rates of as little as 30 minutes per round, and immediate return to the work area. This paper will discuss the technology and advantages of RockWeb as well as opportunities for overall mining cycle cost reduction. The safety benefits, as well as health and environmental considerations regarding application of isocyanate-based liners will also be discussed.

"Sometime around 3000 B.C., primitive metallurgists working in the mountainous regions of Asia Minor bordering on the Black Sea (Pontus) produced a soft, easily fused metal today known as lead. It appears certain that the first metal was made by reductive smelting of galena, but whether this recovery arose by the accidental inclusion of galena in the stones of a fire hearth or whether it occurred as a consequence of simple pyrometallurgical experiments on a series of interesting ""stones"" will likely never be known with certainty. The properties of galena, high metallic lustre, great density and facile cleavage, must have excited the ancients, and such ""stones"" would have been the object of primitive testing111 - Shortly after the discovery of lead, the ancients found that the controlled oxidation of this metal at elevated temperatures yielded smaller amounts of a more interesting material, silver. Again, it is uncertain if the production of silver by primitive cupellation techniques was the result of a fireside accident or the consequence of a deliberate experiment, but the important fact is that silver was produced shortly after the discovery of lead. The techniques for making lead and silver spread gradually throughout the entire civilized world, likely as a result of both technology diffusion and independent rediscovery. The physical properties of lead could not have been overly attractive to the ancients, but silver was a different matter altogether. The gleaming white lustre and relative immunity to oxidation quickly assigned silver to the precious materials category, a status it still enjoys. In early times, argentiferous galena was inevitably processed only for its silver values; lead was generally an unwanted byproduct and was frequently discarded as litharge (PbO) during the cupellation process. The silver was eagerly sought, however, and resulted in considerable mining activity culminating in the famous Athenian silver mines at Laurium at the southern end of the Athenian peninsula."

"Flotation of fine (< 10 µm) minerals is a challenge exacerbated by the emerging practice of fine grinding flotation feed to better liberate targeted minerals; however, the ability of conventional flotation cells to float liberated fines remains questionable. The Gold Ore solution using Mach reactors was tested at Mintek, South Africa, and showed an ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor, a projected recovery improvement of 4% for the Mach-reactor case, and final concentrate grade twice that of conventional flotation. Theory, pilot plant results, and key aspects of plant design, supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning, are discussed.RÉSUMÉ Le procédé de flottation de minerais fins (< 10 µm) pose de grandes difficultés, lesquelles sont aggravées par la pratique émergente de l’alimentation du circuit de flottation avec des mailles de broyage très fines pour mieux libérer les minéraux ciblés ; la capacité des cellules de flottation classiques à flotter les fines de minerais libérées reste cependant discutable. La solution proposée par la société Gold Ore, qui utilise des réacteurs Mach, a été testée à Mintek, en Afrique du Sud ; elle affichait une augmentation d’environ 180 % du facteur kfast développé par M. Kelsall dans son modèle de flottation, une amélioration prévue de la récupération de 4 % dans le cas du réacteur Mach, et une teneur finale des concentrés deux fois plus importante que celle obtenue avec la flottation classique. Creation of 3D model of coal seams is a tedious and time consuming operation. Computer aided 3D solid modelling of coal seams can be performed in a fast and detailed manner. However, in case of having tectonically disturbed coal seams where faults may be observed, expert opinion is necessary to decide the geometry of the coal seam. The aim of this study is detection of fault zones with computers by using drill hole data. Firstly, a digital database is generated by using the drill hole data. Surface models of the layers are produced by applying triangulation method on coal seam roof elevations. The generated surface is divided into small squares and consequently dip and dip direction values are calculated for each square. Variograms for dip and dip direction are determined and maps showing the variation of dip and dip direction are generated by using geostatistical methods such as kriging and co-kriging. Examination of disconformities observed on estimation maps created by kriging and co-kriging clearly reveals the extension of faults. The method used in this study is applied to detect fault lines of a known mine field. 3D solid modelling of the coal seam has also been performed by using conventional cross-section method. The results of both methods were in good agreement. Identification of major faults by using the method introduced in this study could certainly simplify 3D solid modelling of coal seams.

"Cominco&apos;s Polaris Mine is an underground lead/zinc operation located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian High Arctic. Polaris is the world&apos;s most northerly base metal mine, situated at about latitude 75°N and longitude 97°W (Fig. 1). The closest community is Resolute Bay about 100 km to the southeast.During the construction and development phase Cominco adopted a unique scheme to save time and money. Many facilities including concentrator, powerhouse, shops and warehouse were built on a barge in southern Canada. The barge was towed 4800 km to the site in August 1981. Production at Polaris began in November 1981. The current mining rate is 1 million tonnes per year. The mine employs 250 people with about 190 on site at any time.GeologyThe deposit is a Mississippi Valley type orebody and lies near the top of the Ordovician Thumb Mountain Formation. Ore minerals consist of sphalerite and galena with the gangue being predominantly dolomite with calcite and marcasite. The orebody is situated completely within permafrost, consequently the voids frequently found in the ore are filled with ice. The orebody strikes north-south, dips approximately twenty degrees to the east and takes up an area about 400 m wide by 700 m long. The upper portion of the orebody (60 m to 150 m below surface) lies in an area called the Panhandle Zone. The deeper portion of the orebody known as the Keel Zone extends to 300 m below surface (Fig. 2). The deposit is strongly zoned with a high grade zinc/lead and iron-rich tabular core overlain and underlain by vein, stringer and breccia mineralization. The ore reserves at January 1991 were 14.6 million tonnes at 3.6% Pb, 13.7% Zn, 3.2% Fe, after producing 8 million tonnes at 3.9% Pb and 14.2% Zn since November 1981"

Abstract-Geochemical background levels have been established for unmineralized sedimentary rocks that are elsewhere the hosts of Carlin-type gold deposits in the Getchell Trend. The Paleozoic rocks in the Winnemucca Quadrangle consist predominantly of the lower Paleozoic siliceous and clastic sequences that were carried eastward along the Roberts Mountains thrust during the Late Devonian and Early Mississippian Antler Orogeny and the late Paleozoic Havallah and Pumpernickel sequences brought along the Golconda thrust eastward during early Mesozoic Sonoma Orogeny. Over 260 rock samples were collected from the Paleozoic sequences. Major and trace elements were determined by instrumental methods best suited for the specific elements. The general geochemical features of the Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are discussed in detail with reference to the data of average abundances of elements in sedimentary rocks. The background and threshold values of certain trace elements in sandstone, shale, and carbonate rock of one formation, as well as back- ground levels for the entire sequence were obtained. The characteristic geochemical features of the Paleozoic rocks in this area include: consistently high Ba and low Au contents (1.1 ppb, 1.5 ppb, 1.1 ppb Au for average sandstone, shale and carbonate, respectively); generally low contents of those elements which may be of environmental concern such as As, Cd, Hg and Pb. Plots of major and trace elements suggest that the majority of the Paleozoic clastic rocks are related to a passive- margin tectonic setting. Samples with gold values higher than threshold are considered to have been affected by hydrothermal alteration related to gold mineralization. Most of these samples generally also have higher values of Sb, Hg, V and/or As. These observations support the use of such elements as pathfinders for gold, although V has not been identified as such before. Ba is not effective for gold exploration in this area due to the generally high background value of Ba, even though it may be an important pathfinder elsewhere.

"IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corp. Ltd. is a IO 500 tid base metal producer. Development is carried out by Jarvis Clark MJM-21 3-boom development jumbos, using Tamrock E400, 410 and 550 pneumatic drills. Typical drift size is 13 ft by 18 ft with a 12-ft advance per round. Blast holes are 1 ½ in. in diameter while reamed holes are 3 in. in diameter. AN/FO is the principal blasting agent, being loaded by C-I-L model60R intermediate loader. The detonators are NONELS and DETINELS. Sulphide dust explosions occur during blasting when dusts from certain minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite are ignited by name from the detonating shots. The result is a secondary unwanted explosion with a characteristic shock wave and name front that are very destructive to mine services such as ventilation ducting, electrical cable, and ventilation control doors.A typical reaction in the Brunswick orebody occurs according to the chemical formula:4FeS 2 + IIOs-2Fe2O3 + 8SO2 + 3458--(Enright , 1988)The hematite (FeO3) is deposited as a red dust in the blast area while the toxic sulphur dioxide gas (S00 contaminates the underground workings . The presence of S02 gas disrupts production until it is purged from the area by the mine ventilation system or dissipates slowly in those areas where the vent ducting has been melted by the name front or torn down by the shock wave.Sulphide dust explosions exact a high economic toll. Direct costs in damaged materials and wages are probably exceeded by the value of lost production and disruption to the mining cycle. In addition, the health and safety concerns associated with sulphide dust explosions cannot be ignored."

Of four main gypsum areas in the province, commercial production has only come from Falkland and the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys of southeast British Columbia. The Windermere deposit in southeast B.C. has been the major producer since /948. Gypsum and anhydrite from the Falkland deposit is used principally in cement-making at Kam/oops. GYPSUM deposits in British Columbia are known from four different areas: the southeast part of the province in the proximity of the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys; Forgetmenot Creek astride the British Columbia - Alberta boundary near Intersection Mountain; Falkland; and O'Connor River north of Haines . To date, commercial production has only come from Falkland and the southeast part of the province. Gypsum deposits of southeast British Columbia occur in the Burnais Formation of Devonian age. Outcrops of gypsum and numerous sinkholes indicating its presence are scattered over large areas of the Stanford Range. Several properties have been examined by industry in both the recent and more distant past. Significant production is reported from only two deposits. The Mayook deposit, active from 1926 to 1929 and from 1947 to 1954, produced approximately 95,000 tonnes of gypsum. The Windermere deposit, which has been active since 1948, is operated by Westrock Industries and has produced more than 6.8 million tonnes of gypsum. The Burnais Formation is composed principally of well bedded, finely 'laminated gypsum but also contains thin lenses of black fetid limestone and dolomite. Part of the Formation consists of breccia with angular carbonate clasts in massive, coarse grained gypsum. In several exposures, the Formation appears 10 be from 200 10 400 m thick, of which more than 75 Industrial Minerals in Canada per cent is gypsum . In the Stanford Range reserves mineable by quarry methods are estimated to be approximately 450 million tonnes.

MR. A. D. BADOUX: I have listened to Mr. Gordon&apos;s excellent paper with great interest, as I personally have gone through some of the experi­ences he has so clearly depicted. In particular, there were a good many times when we were greatly exercised in our minds as to whether we were justified or not in closing-off certain sections in the Allan mine. The difficulty in these cases arose from the fact that a peculiar smell could be detected in these sections but at the same ti me there was no positive evidence of spontaneous combustion either from heat being apparent or from the possible indications of fire getting any worse. It was suspected that the small percentage of -carbon monoxide that could be obtained by analysis in the air in these sections, and also the peculiar odour, were emanating from the coal itself, and, in order to verify this, bore-holes were drilled in the coal and the gases released from these bore-holes were analyzed. They were found to contain carbon monoxide. After quite a considerable length of time this contained carbon monoxide gradually diminished and finally could not be detected when analyzing such samples of gas. It was our intention to follow this matter up further, as such an occurrence of carbon monoxide is practically unknown, but the sections in which these occurrences were found had to be abandoned. Mr. Gordon referred t0 a case of spontaneous combustion in the Allan . mine, and I may say that, although the section in which that occurrence took place was travelled and carefully examined every day by the colliery officials, yet nothing unusual was noticed until the fire actually took place. This tire was the cause of a slight explosion.

"This paper describes a medium-sized copper mine's results in making innovations and changing operational practices to combat increasing expenditures due to higher labour and supply costs, extended workings, scarcity of experienced manpower and problems created by deteriorating ground conditions.OPEMISKA COPPER MINES (QUEBEC) LIMITED is located at Chapais in the Chibougamau area, in central eastern Quebec, approximately 300 miles north of Montreal and 150 miles north west of Lake St. John. The latter area, developed by lumbering and farming, has supplied the majority of the employees, who, with training and experience and a desire to work and improve themselves, have become the backbone of the Company's 600 personnel.Opemiska began production in 1954 at a rate of 400 tons per day, using diesel power and road transportation. The rate was progressively increased and, by 1959, with hydro-electric power and rail transportation, the mine had reached its present production rate of 2,000 tons per day. It has produced concentrates containing over 430 million lbs of copper."

"THE Royalite-Canada Southern Coleville No. 1 gas strike of August 15th, 1951, and the closely following low gravity black-oil strike of August 23rd, were the first of a series of recent oil and gas discoveries in western Saskatchewan. They are in what is now known as the Coleville field, 25 miles north and west of Kindersley and 30 miles east of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border (Figure 1).Gas flows have been recorded in the Viking sand at daily rates of between 5 and 10 million cubic feet, and black oil of 15° A.P.I. gravity is produced from Mississippian sediments of Banff age at a daily rate .of 50 to 100 barrels on pump.Development drilling was carried on during the winter months, with very little attempt at step-out exploratory ventures. This year, however, a step-out programme to the northeast (Figure 2) is •being carried on in order to determine the position of a possible truncation of Mississippian sediments in that direction. Section 30 of the Coleville area has been fully developed on a 20-acre wellsite basis, and structural information is restricted to local rather than regional interpretation. No attempt will be made in this paper to interpret the Coleville area with respect to the regional geology in any but a general manner."

"Recently, the arsenic grade in copper ores has been increasing year by year. Arsenic bearing minerals (enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13)) coexist with typical copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The removal of arsenic from copper ores that contain relatively high arsenic content is essential due to its adverse impact on the environment and the resulting economic consequences. In this study, arsenic removal and dissolution behaviour of Cu and As from enargite (Cu3AsS4) were investigated using ferric sulphate (Fe2(SO4)3) solutions containing sodium chloride under high pressure oxidation conditions. The effects of numerous parameters including the concentration of Fe2(SO4)3 and NaCl, temperature, total pressure, leaching time and particle size were studied while other variables such as pulp density and stirring speed were fixed at 100 g/L and 750 rpm. The results showed that more than 60% of the copper was dissolved in a 0.1 M ferric sulphate solution under the high pressure oxidative conditions, whereas the leaching rate of arsenic was less than 20%. SEM observation revealed that elemental sulphur was deposited on the surface of enargite forming a passivation layer and the residue was agglomerated. Those phenomena may cause a decrease in the copper leaching rate. It was found that more than 80% of copper was dissolved in the ferric sulphate solution in the presence of 0.34 M sodium chloride under the conditions optimized, whereas the dissolution of arsenic in the mixture did not exceed 2%. XRD analysis of the solid residues from the leaching experiments used ferric sulphate and mixtures of ferric sulphate and sodium chloride showed arsenic to be present as scorodite (FeAsO4).INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been an increase of the arsenic (As) content of copper ores due to the gradual depletion of high grade copper ores. In some copper deposits, arsenic occurs in the form of minerals such as enargite and tennantite. The removal of arsenic in ores containing copper is critical to the production of pure copper and the management of the environmental challenges caused by the smelting process. Due to the environmental risk caused by arsenic emission and the deteriorated quality of the copper product, smelting of enargite concentrates is not an effective method for the extraction of copper (Padilla et al., 2010; Safarzadeh et al., 2014; Long et al., 2012). Therefore, a number of studies have been carried out to develop arsenic removal technologies from copper ores using various methods such as hydrometallurgy (Curreli et al., 2009; Tongamp et al. 2010), pyrometallurgy (Dalewski., 1999; Padilla. et al, 2012) and bio-oxidation (Ehrlich, 1964; Sasaki et al., 2010). Several hydrometallurgical leaching processes like sulphuric acid, alkaline sodium sulphide and sodium sulphate and ferric sulphate leaching have been developed to treat enargite ores and concentrates. Commercial production of barite commenced in British Columbia in 1940; shipments have been recorded from ten deposits, of which four are particularly significant: The Brisco, Silver Giant, Parson, and Mineral King mines. Parr of the barite production is a by-product of base metal deposits in which barite is a major gangue mineral. About one hundred occurrences are known. COMMERCIAL production of barite in British Columbia dates back to 1940. Production volumes rose and fell and reached 39,900 tonnes in 1972. The main producer is Mountain Minerals Limited . There are two principal areas of barite deposits in British Columbia: ( I) The southeast part of the province along the Rocky Mountain Trench , which is the source of all production to date. (2) Stratabound occurrences in northeast British Columbia in the Gataga-Ketchika rivers and Muncho Lake areas which are not yet developed. Of the approximately one hundred reported barite occurrences, only ten have recorded commercial shipments, some of insignificant amount. So far, four deposits have proved to be important producers: Brisco, Silver Giant, Parson and Mineral King. The Mineral King property is situated near the confluence of Toby and Jumbo Creeks, 35 km southwest of lnvermere. The lead-zinc-copper-iron-barite deposits, as described by Fyles (1959, 1962), replace Proterozoic Mount Nelson dolomites of the Purcell system on the limb in the trough of a complex, tight syncline. The mine operated from 1954 to 1967 and 2,097,900 tonnes of baritic ore that was processed for base metal concentrates and also produced 22,680 tonnes of by-product barite. Since 1970, some 136,000 tonnes of barite have been recovered from the old tailings pond. The deposit is now considered depleted. The Silver Giant mine is located 10 km northwest of Spillimacheen. Barite and lead-zinc sulphides replace Cambrian Jubilee limestone near their contact with the overlying Ordovician McKay slate. Mineralization is located in the nose of an overturned plunging anticline. Between 1951 and 1957 800,000 tonnes of baritic ore were processed for lead and zinc concentrate. After 1959 barite was also produced , first from open pit, and later from reworked tailings. Up to 1979 production of barite totalled approximately 180,000 tonnes. Two other producing mines in the area are descri bed by G.R. Manson (this volume). Large, bedded stratabound barite deposits are reported from northeastern British Columbia. Six major shale-hosted Industrial Minerals in Canada lead-zinc-barite occurrences are known in the Devonian Gunsteel Formation. These are: Driftpi le Creek, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Pie, Fluke and Elf. In addition, numerous occurrences of strati form blebby or nodular barite and locally massive white crystalline barite are known from the Driftpi le Creek and Ak ie River districts in Gunsteel shale and from the Kechika, Road River and Ware map areas from Silurian siltstone . The size of these deposits is impressive; the baritic horizon at Mount Alcock is reported to be 25 to 30 m thick , and dri ll ing results from the Cirque deposit indicate reserves of 30 mi llion tonnes of baritic lead-zi nc-si lver ore. Similar bedded barite deposits are also reported from Midway area, near the Yukon border.

This is a rather comprehensive subject and cannot be thoroughly covered in the short rime allowed for its presentation. This article will touch only upon a few of the chief points of the difficulties encountered in recovering copper from brass shell cases in a primary smelter which was not designed to treat scrap metals. Owing to the fact that the plant is at present (Dec., 1946) closed, and our tests were not completed, full details of the results are not available. As is well known, most primary smelters are situated near the mines in the interior of various countries and are not close to seaports or large industrial and railway centres. Consequently, iris unusual for a primary smelter to be asked to treat scrap metal of any kind. When so required, iris obvious that the primary smelter is at a great disadvantage, for the simple reason that it probably has to pay the freight on the scrap from the seaport or industrial centre to the smelter and then also pay the freight on the recoverable metal from the smelter to the refinery, or seaport or industrial centre. Another disadvantage is that a primary smelter is not equipped to sample and unload the scrap nor bas it usually the equipment adaptable for treating the scrap efficiently, as the plant bas been designed to handle large tonnages of ores and concentrates. This short paper will describe some of our difficulties> and how they were corrected. However, it might be advisable to state briefly some of the methods used in treating brass shell cases in other plants. In the first place, a brass plant producing new brass- especially those producing brass billets for extrusion to make brass tubes or rods, or to be drawn into wire, or making brass cake to roll into brass sheets- generally insists upon using new electrolytic copper and zinc and is opposed to using any scrap or secondary brass . Consequently, such a plant usually will not treat brass shell cases. Therefore, the usual procedure is to ship brass shell cases to a secondary smelter, where it is generally sorted, melted, fire-refined, and returned to the market in the form of a high or low brass ingot which can be sold to brass foundries for making brass castings. This evidently is the cheapest and simplest method. Another method is to ship to a smelter which is a combination of a primary and secondary smelter attached to or near an electrolytic refinery. In plants of both these types, that is a primary smelter with Cottrell dust collectors or a combined primary and secondary smelter with Cottrells or a bag house, the zinc may be wasted. However, if a bag house is used, some of the zinc is recovered, but it is usually contaminated with other metals and further processing is required to recover it.
