"This paper discusses the use of risk assessment and risk management techniques within the Australian underground coal mining industry, within the context of geotechnical risk. The industry works within a pro-active, “enabling” legislative framework, where companies and management apply a range of risk assessment tools as part of their everyday management processes. Different geotechnical risk factors and approaches are reviewed, together with application examples – ranging from mine planning and design, operations, and accident investigations.A particularly powerful resource in each of the above stages of geotechnical management is the RISKGATE system. RISKGATE is an assembled “body of knowledge” structured under different topics across the Australian coal industry, of which three topic areas address rock mechanics issues for both the underground and surface mining sector. This paper will provide an overview of RISKGATE in the context of risk-based rock mechanics applications in underground coal mining."

Ozone has been proposed to pretreat refractory ores before the cyanidation process for precious metals extraction. As pyrargyrite is one of the silver species most common in Mexican refractory ores, the ozonization of this silver sulfide was studied. The effect of pH and ozone concentration on silver dissolution was evaluated by means of a factorial experimental design. Two levels of sulfuric acid concentration and ozone in gas concentration were evaluated: 0.18 and 0.72 mol/L of acid and 0.054 and 0.077 gO3/L, respectively. The highest silver dissolution was obtained when using the higher acid and ozone concentration.

Knowledge of radon emanation rates from uranium-bearing rocks is essential to the design of mine ventilation systems for uranium mines. Measurements of equilibrium ratio between radon and its daughters in mine air are important for a better control of mine radiation conditions. The concentrations of radon and daughters were monitored at cut-and-fill stopes in the Beaverlodge Mine of Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. during all phases of the mining cycle. The radon emanation rates of ore and rock samples were measured at the laboratory and the results were compared with in-situ emanation tests in an isolated ore drift. Samples of backfill solution, backfill drainage and ground seepage water were measured [or radon and analyzed for radium and uranium. The results showed that discharges of backfill solution and daily shift-end blasts were the two major sources for a rapid release of radon gas in the ventilation air. Other mining operations, such as drilling, mucking, etc., contributed little effect on radon release to the mining environment. Radon emanation rates of the Beaverlodge are samples ranged from 13 x 10-18 to 600 X 10-18 Ci/cm2/ sec and that of waste rock samples from 0.54 x 10-18 to 13.4 X 10-18 Ci/cm2/sec. The in-situ emanation rate of mine walls with ore-to-rock ratios of 1 to 7 was 60 x 10-18 Ci/cm2/sec. The average equilibrium ratio of radon and its daughters in stapes was 32.6%. Under a normal ventilation condition, the average background levels of radon concentration in cut-and-fill stopes ranged from 13 to 80 pCi/L. The discharges of backfill solution during backfill operations at 100 tons solids per hour released approximately 1.8 x 106 pCi/min of radon and elevated radon concentration in stapes 2 to 5 times above the background levels.

THE chief factors influencing the decision to build the Big Missouri mill underground were the topography of the country and the climate. The location underground assured certain saving in the cost of operation, such as the hearing of the mill, shovelling snow, and handling ore, which, over a period of time, would offset the greater initial cost of the mill excavation and machinery installation underground, as compared with the cost of a like plant on the surface. At Gilman, Colorado, where conditions are somewhat similar, the Empire Zinc Company, at their Eagle mine, are treating their lead-zinc ore in a mill built entirely underground. Company officials made a study of this plant before proceeding with the mill at Big Missouri. LOCATION, CLIMATE, TOPOGRAPHY The Big Missouri mine is situated on the Upper Salmon river, 22 miles north of Stewart, B.C., which is at the head of Portland canal, a narrow natural channel which penetrates 100 miles inland from the coast into the Coast Range mountains. Stewart, the distributing centre for the district, is about 600 miles north of Vancouver. The Big Missouri claims lie on and down the sides of the Big Missouri ridge, which extends north and south between the Salmon River and Cascade Creek valleys. The ridge rises to an elevation of 3,600 feet, is about half a mile wide, and to the east slopes down to the Joker flats in Cascade Creek valley. The Big Missouri camp is located on the flats at elevation 2,800 (see Figure 1). Preliminary development of the property took place from this point with an adit driven under the ridge. The western side of the ridge slopes steeply down to the Salmon glacier at elevation 1,900. Ore found on the 2,850 level extended down, and, in order further to explore the ore-body, the 2,850 level was driven through to the west side of the ridge, a surface incline tramway was built, and a lower tunnel driven at elevation 2,350, five hundred feet below the original 2,850 level, from the west side of the ridge. This tunnel development avoided the necessity of sinking, which would have been costly, as the mine makes a great deal of water (see Figures 1 and 2).

"Traditionally, the geologists of Canada have been occupied with the tasks of finding new mineral bodies, locating gas and oil fields or hunting for economic deposits of industrial minerals. A very minor percentage of graduate geologists have applied their skills to solution of the ""urban blight"" or employing their understanding of ""Nature"" for the optimum use of land by mankind. However, things are changing quickly. The role of the geologist in the planning process is being established. It is an exciting time! Geologists are now being consulted on a wide range of urban planning problems. These vary, tor example, from assessment of the geological environment for the new communities of Erin Mills and Meadowvale, which will have total populations in excess of 100,000 people (truly a satellite city), to a complete geological/ geohydrological assessment of the new sanitary landfill for the city of Guelph.Use of geologic techniques and methods for urban studies must be enhanced with certain skills not taught, in the past, to the geologist. These include airphoto interpretation, soil mechanics, geohydrology, municipal engineering and highway engineering to mention a few. The geologist has the unique training to assess the natural environment and to discover, warn and explain the implications of man's attempt to command his environment."

Froth depth or interface level is an important control variable in column flotation which can influence both grade and recovery. A common method of locating the level is based on sensing the hydrostatic pressure at one or more points along the column. The level indicated can be in considerable error, largely because of variations in froth and collection zone bulk densities. A portable conductivity probe has been developed to detect the position of the interface from conductance measurements across the interface. The location of the interface corresponds to the position where a large change in conductance is observed, which is primarily a consequence of the difference in gas holdup between the collection and froth zone. This probe detects the position of the interface to an accuracy of ± 5 cm. The probe can be used while the column is in operation, which allows for on-line recalibration of the level detection system. Results obtained in its application in a pilot-scale column (0.91 m in diameter) are described.

"Several years ago computer control of the flotation process was successfully implemented at the Matagami concentrator of Noranda Mines Inc. At that time this was the first computer application being installed at this operation. The last few years have seen an extensive use of programmable controllers in areas such as the copper and zinc dewatering circuits and the lime preparation system. With the aid of such instruments, these areas have attained a high level of automation and as a result, a high degree of efficiency. The controllers have proven to be very dependable and easy to use.IntroductionThe Matagarni Division of Noranda Mines Inc. operates two mines in the Matagami District of northwestern Quebec which is located about 650 km northwest of Montreal. The mines ship ores to a central concentrator whose throughput averages 95,000 tonnes of ore per month. Metal contents of the mill feed average 0.9 per cent copper and 5.0 per cent zinc. Concentrate outputs are approximately 3,200 tonnes of copper and 8,200 tonnes of zinc per month.The concentrator commenced operation in 1963. An on-stream X-ray analyzer was installed in 1968, providing analyses of several samples in the flotation circuit without the aid of a computer. In 1974, control of the circuit by computer was added to the system. As a result, zinc flotation efficiency improved considerably and reagent costs decreased through the reduction of copper sulphate consumption.In the past few years it was realized that significant improvements could also be made in other parts of the operation . Copper and zinc dewatering circuits and the lime preparation system were identified as major areas that could drastically benefit from automation. In 1982, programmable controllers were seriously considered as an attractive alternative for achieving the company 's goal. Because of their relative lowcost and their high degree of flexibility, they were selected for implementing automation and, for improving the efficiency in each of these areas."

"Extruded aluminum profiles are increasingly used for lightweight vehicle construction. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles, not only the stress state but also the orientation influenced both the deformation and damage behavior. For the material characterization smooth tensile tests were performed in six orientations, both stress-strain curves and r-values were registered. Moreover notched tensile and shear-tension tests were performed in three directions. Finally punch specimens were tested to investigate biaxial loading. Digital image correlation (DIC) analyses were performed to determine local strain values such as critical values at failure. Numerical investigations were conducted with the strain based damage model GISSMO, which is well suited and widely applied for crash simulation. For a strain based failure model the choice of the deformation model is crucial. Deformation models with increasing complexity were investigated to find the best compromise over all experiments. It was found that there is still a great requirement on development of a material model which describes the orientation dependence of the hardening behavior over all stress states in order to be able to use a strain based failure model reliably.INTRODUCTION Weight reduction is an important step for less energy consumption and as a consequence aluminium is increasingly used in automotive parts. An important field of application is the well-established aluminium extrusion which allows the realisation of quite complex shapes of profiles required for an innovative lightweight design with integrated functions. Typical applications are chassis parts, bumpers, crash elements, air bags, etc. Especially the Al–Mg–Si medium strength alloys of the 6000 series can be easily extruded to form complex profiles and prevail for extrusion. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles not only the influence of the stress state but also the orientation with respect to the extrusion direction have an influence on both the deformation and damage behavior and need to be characterized. The effect of orientation on deformation behavior has been intensively investigated in the last decades and material models haves been proposed (e.g. Barlat & Lian, 1989; Barlat, Lege, & Brem, 1991; Barlat et al., 2003) to describe accurately anisotropic behavior. However it can be noticed that the parameters of anisotropic material models often rely on the yield stress in different directions, which means that the effect of strain hardening is not automatically accounted for. The accuracy of the models at large deformation is not guaranteed and has to be verified. In contrast to deformation models both the characterisation and the modeling of anisotropic damage behavior are not systematically studied. Isotropic failure models based on a critical strain as function of stress triaxiality (ratio of the hydrostatic stress to von Mises equivalent stress) are widely used for crash application (e.g., Bai & Wierzbicki, 2010; Sun, Andrieux & Feucht, 2009; Sun et al., 2013). The mechanisms of failure are manifold and not fully understood; to develop an anisotropic failure model it is mandatory to also have experimental data in different orientations for loading scenarios other than uniaxial tension, e. g. shear, biaxial tension, which implies an extensive experiment plan. This makes the development of failure models more challenging than deformation models for which it is possible to develop a reasonable anisotropic model using the framework of yield function and calibrate the material parameters based on results of tensile tests in different directions. "A hydro-mechanical model was developed to study the interaction between mechanical deformation and fluid flow in the fault zones during CO2 injection and storage at the Heletz site which was chosen as a test site for CO2 injection experiments in the framework of the EU-MUSTANG project. The potential reservoir for CO2 storage at the Heletz site consists of three sand layers separated by lowpermeability shale layers. The potential consequences caused by fault reactivation, focusing on the shortterm integrity of CO2 storage, are evaluated. The difference in the results obtained by considering the three-layer as an equivalent layer storage formation is analyzed.INTRODUCTIONLarge-scale storage of CO2 in deep underground reservoirs may cause considerable pore-pressure perturbation as well as flux migration and concern has been raised over whether shear slip displacements may be induced in nearby faults, as a consequence of their reactivation. A state-of-the-art review can be found in Rutqvist (2012), which describes the various possible effects resulting from CO2 injection into a deep sedimentary basin, including those involved in reservoir stress–strain changes, micro-seismicity, caprock sealing performance, and potential fault reactivation. Moreover, several studies have recently shown how CO2 injection may produce seismic events both on major faults (i.e., large faults with large initial shear offset) (Cappa & Rutqvist, 2011a, b, 2012), and on minor faults that might have gone undetected during the site characterization, e.g., faults less than 1 km long and without detected initial offset (Mazzoldi et al., 2012).The present paper is concerned with the Heletz formation which was chosen as a test site for CO2 injection experiments in the framework of the EU-MUSTANG project. The Heletz site located at the southern Mediterranean coastal plain of Israel and the structure is an anticline fold with a crest of about 4 km by 2 km. The structure is gently dipping to the east, truncated by a pinch-out line to the west and subdivided into a number of blocks by transversal normal faults with small displacements. The water table is located at 300 m below the land surface. An areal sketch of the site with the elevation of the caprock and the location of the borehole that has been chosen for the CO2 injection experiment is presented in Figure 1."

High quality steel production requires extended treatment of the steel in the steel ladle. This has a remarkable impact on the steel ladle refractories, e.g. the need for high performance functional refractories like purging plugs. Operational changes such as increasing tapping temperatures, longer hold times and more aggressive secondary metallurgy are countered by the need for thinner refractory linings and longer refractories life. These combined factors have led to a resurgence in interest in magnesium aluminate spinel raw materials. Magnesium aluminate spinels have been used in steel-making refractories for many years, in a variety of different forms. This paper reviews the production, properties and performance of spinels. Recent developments in the applications of spinels will also be discussed.

Introduction Throughout the Great Plains region (the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), numerous clay deposits of widely varying composition and character are to be found. These may be classified into two general types: (1) surface clays, and (2) shales. The surface clays consist of a heterogeneous mantle of silts and clays interspersed with grave! and sand deposits, and may belong to any of the following groups: (1) lake clays: (2) river-terrace or flood-plain deposits; (3) delta deposits . In most cases, the water from which these deposits were ' laid down was derived from the melting ice of the continental glaciers. These surface clays, in general, possess certain characteristics in common, being all more or less calcareous, often silty, and showing a tendency to 'check' in air-drying. The shales found in this region are of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. These deposits have a wide extent, but there is frequently such a heavy covering of drift material that the clays are accessible chiefly along the walls of stream valleys, or along the escarpments of uplands.

The paper uses two hypothetical, but typical, situations to show that hydraulic rock drilling equipment has very significant economic advantages over pneumatic equipment both in drifting applications (even in the situation where advantage is not taken of the high productive capacity of the hydraulic drill) and production drilling applications. Other factors, including the non-economic advantages and the disadvantages of hydraulic drilling, are discussed. The paper concludes with a brief analysis of why the Canadian mining industry has been slow to take advantage of this apparent broadly advantageous advance in rock drilling technology.

"Nanisivik Mines Ltd. operates a 10-M W diesel-electric generating plant at its zinc-lead operation on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. This paper provides a description of the plant and the integrated waste heat recovery system. Data is presented detailing the actual costs of operating a plant over a period of seven years. Problems in operation are described as well as the success of the plant in meeting its objectives over the years. IntroductionNanisivik is located on the shore of Strathcona Sound at the north end of Baffin Island (Fig. I). Nanisivik Mines Ltd. has operated a 2,100 tonne per day zinc-lead underground mine and a concentrator, together with supporting infrastructure, at this location since October 1976. Annual production of 100 000 tonnes of zinc and 10 000 tonnes of lead concentrate is transported by ship to Europe during the mid -July to mid October shipping season.All electrical needs of the project are provided by the company-owned and -operated power plant. Facilities served by this electrical system are the underground mining areas, the concentrator and industrial area, a townsite, airport, and shiploading dock complex."

"The tyndalloscope is used in Europe for dust-hazard assessments in both coal and metal mines. Dust-hazard conditions can be directly evaluated by the tyndalloscope in many underground working situations, once the basic standard table or tables have been prepared from representative mine-rock samples.The tyndalloscope is excellent, in many cases, for diagnostic dust sampling during a working shift, because individual readings can be taken to within three-minute intervals. The limitations of the tyndalloscope are also discussed.The author suggests that a combination of both the tyndalloscope and gravimetric sampling methods would be an ideal match for most mine dust-hazard assessments."

In this study the results of a series of numerical simulations which are conducted for one of the tunnels of the Mashhad metro line 2 project are presented to evaluate the role of tunnel face support pressure and soil strength parameters on deformation of tunnel lining and face deformation. To achieve this goal, comparative numerical simulations of a mechanized tunnel advance in soft non- homogeneous soil on top of the ground water table and beneath the building are conducted and sensitivity analysis is performed. Development of a step by step tunnel construction process is modeled using a three dimensional finite difference model (FLAC3D) taking into account all the relevant components of shield tunneling. In order to understand the mechanism of the effects of a variety of support pressures on face deformation and lining stresses, numerical simulations are conducted. It is found that the use of different face supports causes a considerable influence on the forces of tunnel lining. In addition, it is revealed that building weight help to change the stress paths and the stress distributions in the tunnel lining.

For efficient leaching of gold from sulfide ores and the oxidation of sulfides into sulfates, it is necessary to introduce a substantial amount of oxidant - atomic oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, potassium or sodium hypochlorite. In this paper, hypochlorite electrochemical treatment is proposed as an effective method of intensification of refractory ore leaching. The objective of the study is to increase the gold recovery from refractory ores with the application of chlorinated solutions that are modified by chemical or electrochemical treatment. The advantages of the use of the modified chlorinated solutions instead of cyanide for gold-sulfide leaching are considered to be the following: a high concentration of the oxidizing agent (hypochlorite ions) in solution helps to achieve a high speed of gold dissolution in the form of chloride complexes; the possibility to produce hydrochloric acid solutions that may be used for the recovering gold by electrolysis; the possibility of the processing of carbonaceous, arsenic-bearing and others kinds of refractory gold ores. The mechanism of the interaction of the modified chlorine solutions with gold-bearing sulfides (pyrite and arsenopyrite) was investigated. The efficiency of the application of chemical and electrochemical leaching method was proved. The main factor that limits the rate of gold dissolution is a high concentration of sulfate ions (SO4 2-) formed in the solution by the oxidation of sulfide minerals. The optimal parameters of chemical and electrochemical leaching method and effective ways to remove sulfate ions were determined. The method helps to increase the level of the gold recovery up to 87% from refractory ores. The intensification of leaching by chemical and electrochemical treatment opens up opportunities for the creation of modern efficient and environmentally-friendly technologies that may be applied for gold extraction from refractory gold ores.
