Open stope design depends on the ore body geometry, loading conditions and rock mass properties to estimate stope dilution and ground support requirements. Rock mass conditions for design primarily rely upon estimates of well established rock classification systems. Many sources of data exist for obtaining estimates for these rock mass classification values which include core logging, geotechnical mapping, geological mapping as well as linking one classification system to another through the use of empirically derived equations. The extent of mapping coverage can also vary significantly based on the data collection technique. This paper proposes an approach where individual components of rock mass classification systems are collected by the different available data collection techniques. Data from different rock types are also considered separately based on their alteration characteristics and general observation products. Data from the Cameco Corporation Eagle Point Mine is presented and an approach is outlined for obtaining average representative classification values for stope hanging wall characterization. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through the analysis of a data base of hanging wall dilution information.

The production of low- and medium-Btu gas from coal provides a more economic source of energy for most industrial users than pipeline-quality coal gas (SNG), although the latter has received more publicity. The paper reviews existing and advanced methods of coal gasification, with particular emphasis on the production of low- and medium Btu gas for industrial and utility use. Some of the ways in which coal gasification can be integrated into power cycles and industrial plant energy balances are discussed.

This paper aims to describe the reasons and methods to extend enterprise networks into underground mines. Currently mines use a number of communication networks for telephones, PLCs, two-way VHF radio and computer networking. Each system can have different wiring, protocols, converters and interfaces all which require expansion and maintenance. The convergence of voice, video and data using Ethernet and TCP/IP has the very real benefit of one ?wire? for underground networks. Now that the majority of underground equipment can communicate using TCP/IP, network convergence can offer reduced network expansion and maintenance costs. Cost savings are good, but the truly exciting aspect of network convergence using Ethernet is the low-cost, high speed wireless networking now available . These wireless networks offer an opportunity to facilitate mining automation even on a small budget. How would mine operators change they way they operate if they could gather vehicle location and data in real time? What about controlling equipment remotely? The list of applications is long and includes traffic control, dispatching, real-time ore blending, tele-operation, automated production reporting, vehicle health monitoring, elimination of paper forms and immediate network access for surveyors and geologists. An ideal converged network for underground mining would be robust, inexpensive, easy to expand, enable fast and secure connections while keeping voice communication performance equivalent or better than what is now provided by VHF radio

"A buffer’s ability to dampen production variations is directly related to its size. Small buffers cannot handle large variations in production, resulting in production losses when their inventory is depleted or saturated. This paper presents a predictive control algorithm used to regulate the inventory in a buffer of limited size, subject to large production variations caused by an upstream batch process. The algorithm was designed to manage the acid flow rates in an acid regeneration process, servicing batch leach reactors at Rio Tinto Fer et Titane, in Sorel-Tracy, Québec. The objective was to increase production by reducing equipment downtime caused by imbalances in the acid tanks servicing the leach reactors. The controller attempts to maintain acceptable acid tank volumes by optimizing the leach reactors acid/slag ratio and reaction time as a function of anticipated acid needs, all while maintaining product quality.INTRODUCTION Some beneficiation processes in extractive metallurgy require processing bulk material in batches. Typical examples of metallurgical beneficiation batch processes are smelting, leaching, electrowinning, elution and carbon-in-pulp. These processes are often situated midstream in an ore beneficiation flow sheet and either receive or transfer ore to continuous processes. Batch processes, by their very nature, introduce large variability in the flow sheet, because they process large finite quantities of material at nearly periodic time intervals. In order to dampen variations in production, various buffers–tanks and stockpiles–are utilized to accumulate ore upstream and downstream of batch processes. A buffer’s ability to dampen production variations is directly related to its size (Phillis & Gumede, 2011). Small buffers cannot handle large production variations, resulting in equipment downtime when their inventory is depleted or saturated (Everett, 2010, Berton et al., 2013). Consequently, the batch equipment production rates must be adequately managed to minimize production losses, attributed to depleted or saturated inventories, while maintaining product quality. Algorithms that anticipate or predict future production variations are often utilized to regulate buffer inventories, subject to large flow rate variations (Salvo et al., 2002; Bonvin, 2013). This paper presents a predictive control algorithm used to maintain an acceptable volume in a spent acid tank servicing several batch leach reactors. The algorithm is implemented at the acid leach plant of Rio Tinto Fer et Titane, in Sorel-Tracy, Québec."

The wide range of potential feed materials, process steps, and products in metallurgical facilities means that standard equipment might not be available to adequately meet the project technical and economic needs. Custom designed equipment should be considered only after rigorous research precludes purchasing standard equipment. However, the decision to use custom equipment introduces a new element of risk into the project. To manage the risk, custom equipment design should be developed through the same front end loading (FEL) phases as project development. If more than incremental development of custom equipment is required, appropriate test work or pilot trials are required to test key uncertainties. Important activities during custom equipment design include maintaining clearly defined performance objectives, conducting appropriate reviews, carefully crafting commercial and intellectual property agreements with design and fabrication partners, and assembling a multidisciplinary team with sufficient development expertise.

"This paper presents an overview of Alberta Oil Sands Technology Research Authority's in situ oil sands recovery project at its underground test facility near Fort McMurray. It covers the rationale for horizontal wells drilled from tunnels below the oil sands, the tunnel layout, the drilling program, and the recovery process and facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) has constructed an Underground Test Facility (UTF) in the Athabasca oil sands deposit in northern Alberta, approximately 50 km northwest of Fort McMurray (Fig. 1). The facility initially is to serve as an underground laboratory from which to field test new approaches to in situ recovery of the bitumen (oil) in the Athabasca deposit.The UTF employs mine access to get at the effective exploitation of an oil reservoir. It does so, however, under conditions considerably more difficult than those faced by most other applications of the technology. Because of the unconsolidated nature of the McMurray formation, the development of drilling chambers directly in the reservoir would be prohibitively expensive. Further, mobilization of the extremely viscous bitumen requires intensive steam stimulation with the attendant concerns of large, complex well completions and potentially hazardous operations Over-all, the oil sands presents mining, drilling and operations challenges which push the technology to a new state-of-the-art. The UTF as it now exists consists of:• a 20 000 ha lease with all-weather road access;• 925 m of 5 m by 4 m tunnels in the limestone 15 m below the oil sands at roof depth of 178 m below the surface (Fig. 2);• two 3 m diameter steel lined shafts to a depth of 213 m;• administration and sur face mine support facilities from which to operate the UTF (Figs. 3 and 4);• underground piping systems to transport drill fluids, steam, produced fluids and services to and from the future well heads underground (Fig. 5);• surface steam generation and production handling facilities (Figs . 3 and 4).• a drilling rig and auxiliary systems specifically designed to drill long horizontal wells into the oil sands from tunnels in the underlying limestone (Fig. 6);• an experienced staff to engineer and operate the facility (Fig. 7)"

Aluminum alloys are widely used in modern industry. Tubes and hollow shapes give great opportunities for structural purposes as well as fluid transport due to their stiffness and lightness, Extrusions on a mandrel or through a bridge die, that requires splitting of the billet with re-welding, produce hollow shapes with varied contours, fins and multiple cavities. Moving and stationary mandrels, mandrel lubrication, tooling for ribbed-tube heat exchangers, and for drilling pipes are considered. Bridge dies can be classified by the bridge position relative to the die face, by mandrel support structure, and by assembly type, The main parameters influencing the quality of the die-welded seams are considered, The difficulties of extruding various alloys through bridge dies are discussed in terms of metallurgical factors, Some approaches to the calculation of the stresses in a bridge are presented.

"Metal-coated thermoplastic parts find more and more functional and aesthetic applications in the interior and exterior of cars. The vapor-deposited or electroplated coatings are usually composed of a plurality of nickel- and chromium-containing layers, which are applied to copper-containing carrier layers on the polymers. Previously, recycling processes are mainly focussed at the recovery or thermal utilization of the plastics. Targeted and selective recycling of the metallic coatings is usually not carried out. Together with several SME, BTU developed a process, in which a complete and separate recovery of all components in high purity is possible with biotechnological methods. The bioleaching is carried out with iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, especially Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The copper-containing layers are dissolved in the solution; chromium- and nickel-containing particles are precipitated as solids. After the bioleaching, a mechanical separation of the individual metal-containing components and their separate workup are carried out. End-products are metallic copper, a nickel- and chromium-containing solid and the cleaned plastics. The bioleaching ensures a high purity of the end products. Through the use of bacteria, which are also found in nature, the process is environmentally friendly. Compared to chemical leaching using inorganic acids, considerably shorter leaching times can be achieved. In addition to the optimization of the leaching process, the R/D-project also includes the development and testing of the apparatus technology.INTRODUCTION The material complexity of many end-user products has increased in recent years, especially in the fields of electrical appliances, vehicle technology and medical technology. However, the demands on functionality, safety, comfort and energy efficiency still play a greater role in product design as factors such as sustainability and usability. For example, if a car still holds more than 70% of steel in the 1980s, a vehicle nowadays includes a larger proportion of a variety of difficultly separable plastics and composite materials, as well as complex metal composites. This relates in particular to composites made from such different materials as metals and plastics. The processing and recovery of the components of those complex material mixtures is difficult for recycling companies."

The Mitchell Creek Landslide is a large, structurally controlled, complex bedrock instability located in northwestern British Columbia. Characterization of the landslide using aerial photograph, exploration geology, and geotechnical investigation data has been completed allowing the development of a three dimensional conceptual model of the landslide domains and slope behaviour. Three domains have been identified in the landslide, from top to bottom: the Sliding domain, a relatively intact slab slowly sliding into the valley; the Transition domain, located in the mid slope of the landslide and showing evidence of significant extension and continuing to subside and displace into the valley; and a Toppling domain, at the toe of the landslide in an area of overturned foliation. Movement is greatest in the Toppling domain, with long term estimated rates of movement up to 4 times that of the Sliding domain; the Transition domain exhibits the greatest range of displacement rates, with average long term values approximately double the slower Sliding domain. This paper documents the results of numerical modelling of the Mitchell Creek Landslide with variation in geomechanical properties, basal rupture surface configuration, structural fabric, and pore water pressure conditions. The locations of internal shear surfaces within the landslide have been estimated from surface scarps, structural fabric orientation, and borehole monitoring data. The performance of each numerical model was evaluated against observed behaviour of the landslide. The configuration and properties of the basal rupture surface were identified as critical to model behaviour, as was spacing and location of internal structures.

Carbonyl nickel powders of irregular particle shape and low a11parent density are used extensively in the production of porous nickel electrodes for nickel-cadmium storage batteries and hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells employing alkaline electrolytes. Such porous nickel matrices are at-tractive for these intended applications as they are relatively inexpensive, are corrosion resistant, have good electrical conductivity, can be welded to form electrical contacts, have a long life (as demonstrated in alkaline storage batteries), and are rugged and vibration and shock resistant. This paper describes a feasibility study concerning the production of porous multi-layer nickel electrodes by the pressing and sintering of stacked layers of green-powder rolled nickel sheet. Background H AUSNER (1) conveniently listed nine different powder compaction processes used for forming metal powders into useful shapes. These are shown in Table I. There are additional powder metallurgy processes; however, most of these are combinations of two or more processes listed in the Table. A study of the literature revealed that every powder compacting process, with the exception of isostatic pressing and explosive forming, has been evaluated or is being used for the manufacture of porous metal electrodes.

IT IS APPROPRIATE that your Institute should have chosen, for its 1956 Annual General Meeting, the Capital City of a province which is making such rapid advances in mining. The railway industry is proud to be playing an active role in this development, expenditures on equipment and railway construction in the Province of Quebec alone in recent years being in ?excess of a quarter of a billion dollars. In looking up some background material for this address I ran across a definition of a mine by Mark Twain, the great American humorist, which I thought might amuse you. He said that a mine was "a hole in the ground owned by a liar". I am sure that if he were alive to witness the enormous value attached to Canada's mineral resources today he would quickly change his definition. Canada's postwar record of mining development has been staggering in its variety and enormity. Historically, only the ?construction of our transcontinental rail ways outranks the largest of three of these development projects - the aluminum undertaking at Kitimat; the Quebec-Labrador iron ore deposits ; and the petroleum and natural gas developments in Wes tern Canada.

"IntroductionTHE ORE PASS raise system at the H.B. mine as contracted by the Patrick Harrison Company consisted of two raises 6 ft. by 10 ft. in section •at 60 degrees to the horizontal. No. 88-88 raise, the longer of the two, was a straight raise 690 feet long, with access only from the bottom. In addition, this raise had two branch knuckle-backs only one of which was driven by. the Patrick Harrison Company. The other, known as 88-89 raise, was 540 feet long with knuckle-backs at 280 feet and 410 feet. Its access, also, was from the bottom (see Figure 1)."

"Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Froth flotation is used to produce nickel and copper concentrates. As is the case at other operations, the presence of magnesium is detrimental to the flotation products. In the past year, the exploitation of a new deposit has increased magnesium in the feed. Thus, it has been challenging to meet the required ratio in the final nickel concentrate. In search for a consistent solution for this problematic, an empirical flotation simulator making use of selectivity curves was developed. The circuit was expressed as a system of linear equations, which considered the distribution of copper, nickel and gangue minerals in the different streams. The relative quantities of each mineral are given by the separation efficiency curves of the various banks in the circuit. Three sources of data were used to calibrate the simulator: historical plant data (metallurgical balance), infinite dilution bench-scale flotation tests, and direct sampling of flotation cells. The calibrated separation curves were used to predict the recovery of the different species based on a single mineral recovery. Validation of the simulator showed good fit for the valuable minerals. The simulator was then used to infer the optimal operating conditions of the flotation circuit to optimise magnesium oxide content of the nickel concentrate. Simulation of two re-arrangements of the circuit gave a promising solution with a Fe:MgO ratio 2.42 times higher than the minimum value.INTRODUCTION Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Summary Statement The following notes on the geology of the Grand Lake coalfield are intended to be introductory to a second paper being read at this meeting, which paper will describe the earlier and the more modern mining methods. The coal industry of the Grand Lake coalfield is centred chiefly within a three-mile radius of Minto, but minor operations are dotted over an area of approximately 50 square miles extending easterly to the vicinity of Chipman and Coal Creek (see Figure 1). The coal comes from one seam of Pennsylvanian age. The seam varies in thickness from 16 to 30 inches and lies almost horizontal at depths of 0 to 125 feet. It has been mined and prospected over an area of approximately 150 square miles, but in a portion of this area the commercial possibilities have been destroyed by erosion. The industry is the oldest of its kind in North America, but it did not at tract particular publicity until about 1914. Since that date, mining methods have improved and the output has rapidly increased until, in 1934, it amounted to 271,335 long tons, and furnished employment for about 1,000 men (1). Approximately 73 percent of this amount was produced by the Minto Coal Company, the Miramichi Lumber Company, the Avon Coal Company, and Welton and Henderson, and 25 per cent by the Rothwell Coal Company, Harvey Welton Limited, G. H. King, the Reade Construction Company, and the Newcastle Coal Company. The remainder was produced by J. W. Carter, G. D. Crossman, T. H. Swift, C. S. Yeamans, and several other small operators. The coal is won by underground mining, except in the case of the Reade Construction Company, and a minor operation by Ashfield and Pieton, who have employed open stripping. It is mined only as required to fill definite orders, and is loaded directly into cars for shipment. In 1934, the larger mines did not operate full time, and the production could easily have been increased if markets had been available. The coal is sold in four grades: screened or lump, run of mine, slack, and stripping. The chief market is with the railways and commercial plants, with a fair amount for domestic purposes.

"Although the centennial of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converting process has recently been celebrated, the technology has essentially not changed much since its inception. PS converting is used extensively in the Cu, Ni and PGM industry to remove iron and sulphur from a molten matte phase. A typical PS converting process would use low pressure air supplied by a blower to bubble air through the molten bath. This bubbling injection regime is inherently inefficient from a process and energy consideration. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Brimacombe and co-workers demonstrated at both laboratory and plant scales that sonic injection (jetting regime) into copper or nickel converters could reduce or eliminate the above hindrances characteristic of PS converting. Since then, in spite of these successes, very little industrial applications have made headway in the converting process of non-ferrous metal mattes on a commercial scale. As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction program (process efficiency), Lonmin Platinum decided to conduct a full scale industrial evaluation of sonic injection using air only to establish if punchless, high efficiency sonic injection was feasible in its small 3.05 × 4.57 m converters (10’ × 15’). A plant trial was run for four weeks in one of its three converters. This paper discusses the plant demonstration with a focus on the experience acquired by Lonmin together with the key learnings from the trials. Reference will also be made to the commercial aspects of a full scale implementation of sonic injection in all three converters in the smelter. Cominco is making substantial savings in secondary breaking by replacing dynamite with a new nitrate-based explosive. Compareo with dynamite. the new explosive, known locally as "Fine NCN," is significantly cheaper, more effective and safer to use. It also works better than prilled NCN, which is unsatisfactory for secondary blasting because of inadequate sensitivity, low strength and awkward handling properties. A simple apparatus has been devised for pulverizing prilled NCN to a fineness practical for effective secondary breaking. Blasting systems using cheap detonating cord for initiation have been developed.

Barrick Gold Corporation is the gold industry leader, with 25 operating mines and a pipeline of large, long-life projects located across five continents, in addition to large land positions on some of the most prolific mineral districts. Barrick's high level of commitment to sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship was recognized by Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) - World, for the third consecutive year in 2010. The potential for adverse environmental effects from acid rock drainage (ARD) and metals leaching (ML) and their financial implications for Barrick are key considerations in our environmental assessment and business development processes. Barrick's membership in the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) reflects the importance of these issues to our business. INAP's development of the Global Acid Rock Drainage (GARD) Guide (a best practices guide for acid rock drainage prevention) provides Barrick with an important tool to assist in the assessment of environmental and financial risks from ARD and ML associated with our planned and ongoing mining operations (INAP, 2009). In this paper we will discuss how Barrick incorporates the GARDGuide and its principles for ARD and ML prediction and prevention in our business development processes and the management of our operations. The GARDGuide serves as a key reference for our project environmental assessments and as a common link between our projects and operations management, consulting specialists, permitting and regulatory authorities and the public. We will discuss how the GARDGuide is being "syndicated" throughout Barrick as a standard of practice and present a case study of how it was used in a recent Barrick Business Development Project.

INTRODUCTION THOSE concerned with coal mining operations in Alberta have been asked repeatedly the same question, "Why is mechanization in Alberta proceeding so slowly as to lag far behind the mines in the United States?" This question is often asked in such a manner as to indicate that a severe reprimand is overdue to the mining engineers of this Province for their apparent indifference to the problem of improving their mining operations by increased mechanization. To the average person, unacquainted with mining conditions and problems, mechanization appears to be simply a matter of introducing equipment to load coal underground and, once this is done, substantial economies in operating costs will automatically follow. Invariably, those who have followed this simple reasoning have found, to their regret, that such is not the case and that effective mechanization involves something more than the mere process of introducing loading equipment into a mine. To be effective, any programme of mechanization must take into consideration all operations incidental to the mining, transportation, and handling of the coal from the working face to the tipple, and must utilize equipment which can be best adapted to any peculiar condition or circumstance prevailing in the mine concerned. In the use of such equipment, the net and final result should be an improvement in operating costs of sufficient magnitude to at least return to the operator, over a specific period of years or during the expected life of that equipment, all his investment plus a fair return on that investment.

As part of a general review on study of surfactant blinding agents to improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores, processes of CIL and RIL leaching using surfactants were investigated. When refractory ores were treated by surfactants, CIL and RIL leaching processes yielded significant improvement on gold recovery. This paper will discuss and compare the laboratory results from two different leaching processes on preg-robbing ores, as well as, illustrate the difference of potential fouling of the blinding agents on activated carbon and resins.
