"The high copper demand as well as the lack of new high-grade deposits, are pushing the copper industry to process low-grade and refractory ores containing chalcopyrite. However, for a quantitative dissolution of copper from the chalcopyrite, the leaching performances still need to be improved. In the present research, we studied and optimized the iodide-assisted leaching of chalcopyrite in H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3 media. The evolution of surface species during leaching was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). Inductively-coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the dissolved copper. Significance of experimental results was assessed by statistical analysis while a kinetic analysis of the leaching process was performed by fitting the experimental data with the Shrinking-core model. Results showed the significant positive effect of iodide on copper extraction rate. In the presence of KI, the dissolution rate of copper was almost double than in the parallel experiments without KI. Whether using KI or not, elemental sulfur was generated on the surface of the leached chalcopyrite. Nevertheless, in the presence of KI, the passivation layer did not arrest the leaching. Analysis revealed that the leaching rate was limited by the chemical reaction control step.INTRODUCTION Due to the large demand of copper, processing low-grade ores containing copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) has become unavoidable (Watling, 2013). Since ores with CuFeS2 may also contain appreciable amounts of arsenic that cannot be smelted, and because low-grade ores are uneconomic to smelt, the hydrometallurgical technologies are crucial for recovering the copper (Dutrizac, 1978). Sulfate-based processes are attractive because of the lower operating costs and because the sulfate ion is more suitable in case copper would be recovered via electrowinning. In ferric sulfate solution, chalcopyrite undergoes oxidation due to the large amount of Fe(III) and dissolution due to the presence of the sulfate ion (Majima, et al., 1985). "Mining has been a staple to technological advancement ever since the dawn of time. By harnessing the different physical and chemical properties that each mining commodity brings to the table, more and more innovation is developed and manufactured. As these non-renewable resources continue to be extracted, the industry as a whole faces a challenge in finding the next economical deposit as well as declining grade at the current operations. By means of pre-concentration, ore sorting aims to separate the barren material from the valuable ore to reduce energy consumption and tailings generation, while increasing the feed grade, concentrate grade, mill recovery, and revenue. In addition, ore sorting allows the modification of deposit geometallurgy in order to allow the creation of an optimal mill feed. This paper evaluates the applicability and challenges of ore sorting by utilizing the results from four different mines, and reviews them in detail. The mines include one underground and three open pit mines that are precious metal operations. In order to understand the applicability of ore sorting in these operations, initial rock-by-rock test results and different types of assays (atomic adsorption [AA], inductively coupled plasma [ICP], and fire assay) are utilized. Using the assay results, the grade recovery curves for ore sorting are generated and they are further improved by using and developing an ore sorting algorithm, which is discussed in this paper. The application and evaluation of ore sorting in greenfield and brownfield properties will also be discussed. The state of the art ore sorting technologies for both rock-by-rock and bulk sorting are also reviewed in this paper. The future technologies on the horizon, including different combinations of sensors, are explained. The sorting technologies include X-ray transmission (XRT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), colour, infrared, electromagnetic, and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)."

"LocationThe Key Lake operation of Cameco Corporation is located at latitude 57°N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southem boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest city is LaRonge, located 240 km to the south. Access to the mine is by all-weather road and by private airstrip.Description of OperationThe mill was designed to produce twelve million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) a year from a feed grade of 2.4% U3O8. Current production is fourteen million pounds from 2.0% feed.Following grinding, the uranium is leached using sulphuric acid and oxygen in autoclaves. An eight thickener counter current decantation (CCD) circuit is used to separate the uranium-bearing solution from the solid waste residue. The uranium in solution is further purified in a solvent extraction circuit. The purified uranium is then precipitated using ammonia, calcined at 840°C, and packaged in drums for shipping to refineries. There is a crystallization circuit to recover excess ammonium sulphate produced in the process, and a waste treatment circuit.HistoryUranerz Exploration and Mining discovered the Gaertner and Deilmann orebodies in 1975 and 1976, respectively. Between 1975 and 1977, Uranerz conducted laboratory studies and delineated a process for the Key Lake ore known as the ""Bonn process."" In 1977, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. was retained to conduct further studies in cooperation with U ranerz. The technical feasibility of the Bonn process was generally confirmed. Howeve1~ alternative processing methods also appeared feasible, and over the period 1978-1979, a detailed research and development program was conducted to finalize the processes to be used and to provide data for design of the plant."

"Over the last 50 years there has been a dramatic evolution in the metallurgical engineering field in Canada. In the 60s the field was dominated by large American and UK groups, often selling major process and equipment packages. The local content was limited to wrap around facilities and the civil and structural work. The mining and metallurgical companies had strong internal teams to lead these projects. Over the decades and business down cycles the large foreign contractors disappeared or re-structured and the mining companies largely shed their engineering and project management groups. The resulting gap was filled by a cadre of local specialist engineering companies, some of whom have grown to be world leaders in the field. The paper traces this evolution and examines the underlying causes and consequences."

Activation analysis for copper and manganese in 10 mg samples machined from aluminum-base diffusion couples has been used in the study of ternary diffusion in the Al-Cu-Mn system. The accuracy, economy and convenience of the method are considered to be very competitive with other methods for analysis of such small samples. Neutron-activated aluminum-zinc alloys in the range from 10 per cent to 100 per cent zinc have been equilibrated with a known volume and the vapors subsequently condensed and collected. The vapor pressures relative to pure zinc (the thermodynamic activities) have been determined at 550°C' by recording the relative count of /'-rays from zn65 in the collected samples. The method is a sensitive one, although subject to serious obstacles to experimental accuracy.

"IntroductionIn this paper it will not be possible to cover all details of the reagent systems at Brunswick Mining and Smelting but it is hoped that a description of the evolution of these systems will be of some benefit. The concentrator of Brunswick Mining and Smelting located near Bathurst, New Brunswick was originally designed as a 3,000 ton per day operation but before construction commenced was uprated, with 4,500 tons per day being treated by the summer of 1964. Development of the open pit at another ore body five miles away was initiated in 1965 and additional concentrator and crusher facilities went into operation in September, 1966. Present total daily throughput is over 8,000 tons per day. The ore at Brunswick is very high grade but mineralization is very fine grained and requires grinds generally over 75% minus 400 mesh for liberation. The amount of surface exposed using grinds of this order understandably requires great quantities of reagents, Reagent mixing systems for the original concentrator allowed only for batch mixing and were very expensive in labour cost especially.During the first three years of operation total number of men employed in reagent handling reached a peak of four men per shift and six men on dayshift unloading cars for a total of 22 men. At present only one man is employed on shift, and four men on dayshift take care of unloading and mixing reagents, a total of 8 men. The man on shift is almost entirely occupied with checking feeder operation, flow rates, and head tank levels. Most commonly used reagents are tabulated in Fig. 1 showing average monthly and daily requirements in the Brunswick operation as well as pounds per ton of mill feed as found in 1969. It is very obvious that with over seventeen tons each of lime and soda ash and six tons of copper sulphate used each day, opening of bags and mixing batches of solution is an inefficient undertaking."

"At the San Manuel mine (Arizona, USA), in-situ copper leaching of a copper porphyry deposit was carried out from 1986 to 1999 during underground and open-pit mining. In 1993–1994, well¬field testing of the supergene zone, composed primarily of chrysocolla and copper-rich clay minerals, led to estimates that 52% of the acid-soluble copper (ASCu) could be recovered during in-situ leaching; however, the actual recovery from zone 6, which had the longest leach history, was approximately 42%. Comparing drillcore assay data from holes drilled before and after leaching also indicated an approximate recovery of 42%. "Hydrogen induced failure and degradation in structural metals, namely hydrogen embrittlement, has been a long-standing industrial problem for more than one century and remains unsolved. Despite the proposal of numerous models, no consensus has been reached, and considerable discrepancies in experimental observations and theoretical calculations exist. One aspect that is central to the understanding of hydrogen embrittlement is the interaction between hydrogen and grain boundaries. In this study, we investigated the influence of several solute elements (i.e., Cr, Mo and Nb) on hydrogen segregation at the representative 9 grain boundary using first-principles calculations. Our results showed that the presence of Mo and Nb can reduce the tendency of hydrogen segregation at grain boundaries, while meanwhile enhance the grain boundary strength. This indicates that Mo and Nb are salutary elements that can be used to increase the material’s resistance to hydrogen embrittlement, providing new insights in designing hydrogen embrittlement resistant Ni alloys. INTRODUCTION Hydrogen embrittlement (HE), a phenomenon of hydrogen triggering premature failures in structural metals, has been a headache for industries ever since its first discovery one century ago (Johnson, 1874; Zhou, Marchand, McDowell, Zhu, & Song, 2016; Zhou, Ouyang, Curtin, & Song, 2016). It is well accepted that the segregation of hydrogen at microstructures such as grain boundaries (GBs) plays a key role in determining the occurrence and severity of HE. GBs are two-dimensional defects where significant local lattice distortion exist, which leads to large free volume and thus locations for hydrogen trapping and segregation. Numerous works have clarified GBs as the energetically preferable places for hydrogen segregation. For instance, Geng et al. demonstrated the preferential segregation of hydrogen at the S5(120) GB in several metals, and suggested a decohesion-type of HE in light of Rice-Wang thermodynamic theory (Geng, Freeman, & Olson, 2001). Birnbaum et al. illustrated that complete intergranular crack of Ni GBs can be induced by hydrogen segregation when the hydrogen concentration is sufficiently high, evidencing the significant role of hydrogen accumulation on GB weakening (Lassila & Birnbaum, 1987). Yamaguchi et al. demonstrated strong segregation hydrogen also occurs at S3 GBs in alpha-iron, showing that local hydrogen clustering (i.e., multiple hydrogen atoms, up to six, per unit cell) can be trapped at the S3 GB (Yamaguchi, Kameda, Ebihara, Itakura, & Kaburaki, 2012)."

THE Britannia Mining & Smelting Company, Limited, have been operating their property at Britannia Beach, B.C., continuously for nearly forty years and have mined over 33,000,000 tons of ore from orebodies within a belt of highly sheared rocks, five miles long by 2,000 feet wide. The property is in the Coast Range mountains, about twenty miles due north of Vancouver. The mountains rise abruptly from sea level to elevations of 4, 500 feet within a horizontal distance of 7,000 feet. The topography has enabled the orebodies to be developed by adit tunnels. The active mining levels are connected to the adits by incline and vertical service shafts. The main service adits are the 2200, 2700, and 4100 levels (see Figure 1). The mine surface shops, three bunk-houses, and over one hundred dwellings form the townsite camp at the portal of the 2200 level adit. A small camp of one bunk-house and a few dwellings is situated at the 2700 level portal. The beach surface shops and camp, adjacent to the 4100 level adit, service the mill, foundry, and other beach installations as well as the mining from the 4100 level. The ore mined from the various orebodies is delivered to the 4100 main haulage level through a system of rock raises and intermediate tramming levels and is hauled on the 4100 level to the mill.

"The Drumbo Mine is a new gypsum mine located at exit No. 32 of Highway 401 between Woodstock and Kitchener, Ontario. The flat-lying 6-foot (1.8-metre) bed of gypsum is near the base of the Silurian Salina Formation, about 380 feet (116 metres) below surface. The mine is owned and operated by Westroc Industries Limited. A shaft, 12.5 feet (3.81 metres) in diameter, was drilled and then lined with a liner-sinking technique new to this continent. The shaft was completed in the fall of 1977. Gypsum production was started in December 1978, employing a conventional room - and - pillar method of mining.Historical BackgroundA brief mention of gypsum in the Drumbo area is included in a survey of the Ontario gypsum industry by Guillet. This occurrence was discovered in 1958 when National Gypsum conducted some widespread diamond drilling. Western Gypsum Products Limited acquired leases in 1960 and concentrated a drilling program in Blenheim Township near the village of Drumbo; 79 holes were drilled in an area of 1900 acres (770 hectares). Mining rights were then acquired for 170 0acres (690 hectares). A test shaft, 44 inches (1.1 metres) in diameter, was drilled to obtain a 50-ton (45-tonne) bulk sample. This opening will be used as an emergency escape way and for ventilation.Westroc Industries Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of BPB Industries, has its head office at Mississauga, Ontario and operates gypsum board plants at Mississauga, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Montreal. Other gypsum mines are at Windermere, B.C. and Amaranth, Manitoba."

Microwaves have considerable potential as an energy source in both mineral processing and metals extraction. In this research, the utilization of microwave radiation for the heating of a gibbsite type bauxite ore was investigated. Firstly, thermogravimetric studies were performed in order to characterize the dewatering processes of the ore. Secondly, both the real and the imaginary permittivities, which are the fundamental properties that determine the interaction of microwaves with any given material, were measured for the bauxite ore as a function of temperature. The changes in the permittivities were shown to be related to the dewatering processes. Subsequently, the effects of operating variables such as processing time, sample mass, particle size, microwave power, sample bulk density and carbon and magnetite additions on the sample temperature in a microwave field were studied. The results showed that under suitable conditions the bauxite ore could be readily heated. Therefore, there is considerable potential for the application of microwaves for the heating of bauxite ores.

Recently, 3D printing technology in the manufacturing field is in the spotlight. In the construction industry, similar rapid prototyping technology that does not use conventional form can be applied to meet the demand on free formed structure that can provide aesthetic value and functionality. Conventional formwork can increase construction cost and period for various structure with complex shapes while it has numerous advantages such as high strength, convenience, accuracy and good quality of surface roughness. To meet the demand on free formed structure, automated freeform construction systems such as Contour Crafting and Concrete Printing have been developed with active collaboration between university and industry in USA and England. However, details on the system have not been fully released in public, so the possibility of its fusion and spin-off technology cannot be expected. In this paper, cost-effective solution for mechanical and control system for constructing a free curved structure without mold are described. As an appropriate material for the system, fiber reinforced mortar was selected by experiments on compressive strength, setting time and fluidity. After performing G-code simulation, transfer and extrusion experiments with the selected mortar mix were performed and the possibility of the development of automated freeform construction system was demonstrated. Based on this research results, it is required to keep the automated freeform construction system improve and extend it into the new application area in construction industry.

A summary of geochemical dispersion processes is presented. Secondary and tertiary dispersion of uranium was examined at several uranium prospects in British Columbia. The vertical migration of uranium from bedrock (primary dispersion) through overburden into the various soil horizons, and into snow and plants, was studied, and relationships were sought to explain the dispersion patterns in the secondary and tertiary environments. Soil developments were examined to obtain information on factors affecting the dispersion of uranium in soil profiles and tertiary substances; samples were analyzed for a number of elements. Biogeochemical data indicate that plant geochemistry is a possible exploration aid in areas of heavy overburden owing to the high selectivity of certain plants for specific elements. Some new data on the geochemistry of snow are discussed as a matter of research interest in the tertiary dispersion of uranium. Analytical techniques and problems are discussed, particularly extraction techniques, which must be carefully chosen to give reliable information on uranium dispersion.

"The province of Quebec has a strong tradition in industrial minerals. Ten commodities are produced and the annual total shipments have exceeded $600 million in recent years. Quebec is a world renowned producer of chrysotile, titanium slag, graphite, and ilmenite. Quebec is an important North American producer of mica, talc, and peat moss. This paper reviews the main minerals and commodities that have been the object of exploration or development in recent years, namely graphite, wollastonite, dolomite, and silica. Some of the leading projects concerning magnesium minerals and apatite-ilmenite are described. IntroductionQuebec has a strong tradition in industrial minerals. It goes back to the second half of the 19th century when the first graphite and apatite mines in the Gatineau area and asbestos mines in the Eastern Townships were opened. Since then, more than 25 commodities have been produced in Quebec, making industrial minerals an integral part of the Quebec mineral industry. Today, industrial minerals and building materials count for one third of the total mineral production in Quebec.Present industrial mineral production includes 10 commodities (Table 1). In the last five years, the value of industrial mineral shipments has varied between 500 and 700 millions dollars annually, which represents 20% to 25% of Quebec’s total mineral production. For many years, Quebec has been a major producer of chrysotile and titanium slag, the only producer in eastern North America of mica, graphite and ilmenite, and a leading Canadian producer of talc and peat moss. Quebec also produces, mainly for domestic markets, dolomite, limestone, salt and silica.Quebec’s industrial mineral sector has been quite active in the recent years. Exploration by government geologists and companies has led to the outlining of new deposits, some of which are now in production; others are currently being evaluated. Technical and economic studies are also underway to determine the feasibility of various development projects."

"The primary purpose of conducting aeromagnetic surveys in mineral areas, and interpreting the data thus obtained, is to aid in the extrapolation of the geology from known to unknown areas-both in a horizontal and vertical direction. This paper describes one of the steps in the process of interpretation which has, in the past, been neglected-that of mathematically or quantitatively treating the data in two-dimensional map form. For this, several techniques are available.These techniques determine the downward and up-ward continuation fields, the second vertical derivatives and the fields reduced to the pole from the total magnetic field data. Second vertical derivatives and downward continuation fields increase the resolution and sharpness in the observed magnetic anomalies and tend to outline the surface traces of causative bodies with a reasonable amount of success in most cases. The 'reduction to the pole' is a mathematical process of calculating the field at the north pole from the observed field so that the un-desirable effects of the dip and declination of the earth's field and of rock magnetization are eliminated.New and accurate means of carrying out these calculations have been developed by the Geological Survey of Canada. In this paper are also presented the results of a method for obtaining the symbol and numerical map of the processed data with the help of the printer associated with the computer. The tedious work of digitizing magnetic field values in a map can be speeded up by the use of a semi-automatic coordinatograph, with the aid of which field values can be accurately transferred to punched cards."

"Atmospheric leaching of arsenical sulfide concentrates, and especially enargite leaching, is one of the major challenges within the current hydrometallurgy research area. One of the recent processes developed for sulfide ore treatment is atmospheric leaching in the presence of AF 5, a novel carbon based catalyst, in chloride media. The quantification of different ion concentrations during enargite and chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of AF 5 were measured and the copper recovery rates of 97% and 96% were achieved. The objective of this study is to shed light on the leaching mechanism of the sulfide minerals. Based on the speciation of iron and copper by different titration methods, the AF 5 catalyst first reduced ferric and cupric ions and then oxidized ferrous, cuprous and arsenite ions. The oxidation behavior of the catalyst enhanced the leaching results. The AF 5 catalyst also caused in situ precipitation of scorodite in leaching experiment. The speciation of ions in the chloride media were simulated by Phreeqc software and the dominant species in the leaching solution were determined.INTRODUCTION The hydrometallurgy of copper has been used for several decades and is still under development for more complex copper sulfide minerals due to their refractory nature. Most of the world copper reserves are in the form of chalcopyrite; and enargite is known as a major contaminant. Pyrometallurgical processing of enargite is problematic due to arsenic release and tight environmental regulations (Peacey, Gupta, and Ford n.d.). On the other hand, lower recoveries in the hydrometallurgical processes make most of these processes impractical. Several leaching processes have been developed for the leaching of copper sulfide minerals. Some of the common treatment methods for copper sulfide minerals are pressure oxidation leaching (POX), CESL, Activox, Albion process, atmospheric ferric sulfate leaching, Dynatec, Galvanox, and Hydro copper process (Barr, Defreyne, and Mayhew 2005; Conner and Anderson 2013; D.G. Dixon, Mayne, and Baxter 2008; Hyvärinen and Hämäläinen 2005; Palmer and Johnson 2005; Rohner, Bartsch, and Ngoviky 2012). Generally it is not viable to dissolve copper sulfide minerals at ambient pressure in mild acidic media and dissolution of these refractory minerals requires harsh conditions in the presence of oxidant materials (Biswas and Davenport 2002). Ferric ions have been used as an oxidant in different media in copper sulfide leaching processes. U. S. Bureau of Mines’ Reno Metallurgy Research Center in 1969 (Haver and Wong 1971) investigated ferric chloride leaching of chalcopyrite. Dutrizac and Macdonald (1972) studied ferric sulfate leaching of enargite. Based on this study, 50% of the copper was recovered at 80-85 ºC after 7 days of leaching. Cupric ions can also be used as an oxidant. Parker, Paul, and Power (1981) stated that cupric/cuprous couples are more effective than ferric/ferrous couples in chloride media because they are rapid and reversible. The Hydro Copper process leaches copper sulfide minerals in chloride solution catalyzed by cupric ions. In this process, copper dissolves as cuprous ions in presence of cupric ions (about 10 g/L) (Hyvärinen and Hämäläinen 2005)."

Efficient and effective management of extraction process tailings is an essential ingredient for the continued success and development of Alberta's vast oil sands resources. Open-pit oil sands operations north of Fort McMurray recover bitumen from flotation circuits. Process tailings are managed in carefully engineered and monitored external tailings management facilities and in below-grade mine pits. In order to support reduction of production costs and improve upon established tailings management practices, CANMET has been working with the oil sands industry in a collaborative framework to assess the potential to integrate thickened tailings into oil sands extraction process flowsheets. Albian Sands has commercialized the process while others, including Syncrude Canada Ltd., continue to evaluate the suitability of the process for their operations. This paper provides an update on R&D work undertaken in recent years to assess and develop the potential of thickened tailings technology for the open-pit oil sands operators of northern Alberta. The aim of this work was to explore opportunities to optimize process efficiency and environmental sustainability by improving water and energy conservation and develop more alternatives for tailings management and reclamation.

Among all pure metals, copper has the second highest thermal and electrical conductivity, next to silver. These properties coupled with a reasonable cost, make copper ideal for use in metallurgical vessels as a conductor of electrical current, as well as a lining material and protector of refractories and steel superstructures. Treatments of copper to address it’s softness and low melting point, specifically hard surfacing and calorizing, will be discussed. This paper will cover the evolution of copper to its current form, offer comparisons to other materials, and theoretical and empirical evidence on its superior performance in metallurgical vessels such as blast furnaces, basic oxygen converters and electric arc furnaces. Some case studies will be provided and finally a brief summary.

Katowice Coal Holding (KHW) is one of the largest coal companies in Europe. The company owns five coal mines with a daily output of around 60 000 tons of coal. In the Katowice city area, very good quality steam coal is extracted. The depth of mining varies between 400 and 1100 m and some of the mines rank amongst those most afflicted by methane in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with the methane hazard having a significant impact on production and safety. ?Myslowice-Wesola? mine, being a part of the Katowice Coal Holding is characterized by high methane and rockburst hazards. The mine is equipped with a modern surface drainage pumping station. At the mentioned mine, longwall 514 was selected for analysis of its methane emission. The longwall was extracting the thick seam 501 (over 4 m), at a depth of over 900 m, which was subject to high stress and high gas concentration conditions. At a distance of about 50 m above, seam 501 is covered by thin seam 416. The strata between these two seams are sandstone and mudstone layers. In the floor of seam 501, with a thin shale interlayer, is located seam 510, which is the thickest (over 10m) and richest coal seam in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. In longwall 514 and it?s vicinity, methane was the dominant risk. For this longwall three methods of classical gas drainage were carried out. At first, drainage was undertaken using long boreholes from a cross-cut at level 665 m, located far from the production panel. Later, it was performed using typical boreholes drilled from the ventilation gallery (tail gate road). Finally, it was undertaken using a degassing drift executed in the upper coal seam 416. All of these headings, ie. cross-cut level 665 m, the ventilation road and conveyor road in seam 501 and the degassing drift in seam 416, were equipped with media for drilling and proper drainage pipelines. Due to the high rockburst hazard and some problems with caving, several kinds of de-stressing and torpedo blasts were carried out in both coal seams and roof rocks. The subsequent analysis and experiments allowed the establishment of some general rules for carrying out degassing operations effectively. The effectiveness of a degassing drift was demonstrated. In some instances, the system allowed more than 70% of the total methane released to be captured and fed into pipelines. The aforementioned blasts had a marginal impact on methane emissions and the efficiency of degassing methods. Cyclic drilling and regular switching of boreholes in phase with the mining progress and working face advance were shown to be essential.
