A process has been developed at Curtin University whereby glycine is used in an alkaline environment to leach gold, silver and copper from their ores, concentrates, process intermediates and wastes. Copper mineralisation investigated includes various oxides, sulfides and native copper. The leach process utilises an oxidising environment such as oxygen. Glycine is a non-toxic, non-volatile, edible, low cost reagent which is produced in large industrial quantities for use in several industries. Glycine and its copper and precious metals complexes are stable over wide pH, Eh and temperature ranges. Other than losses in leach residues, the glycine is recovered and recycled for leaching. Iron dissolution is insignificant in the pregnant leach solution. Iron in pyrite remains unaffected, whereas iron associated with base metal sulfides (e.g. chalcopyrite and bornite) is converted to a readily filterable iron hydroxide. Efficient separation of copper by solvent extraction and conventional electrowinning has been shown to be feasible for a number of organic extractants, whereas gold and silver glycinates adsorb very well onto carbon allowing CIP/CIL/CIC (carbon-in-column) based processes. The process is ideal for ores containing acid-consuming gangue, concentrates with high arsenic or halide contents and for copper-gold ores with significant sulfide mineralisation. The process eliminates many of the problems associated with the processing of copper-gold-silver ores, such as elemental sulfur formation, silica gels, unwanted metal co-dissolution, and jarosite precipitation. The reagents used and process residues are much safer and environmentally benign than conventional process options. The processing technology can be applied to in-situ, heap and vat, or agitated tank leaching at temperatures ranging from ambient to below 100?C at atmospheric pressure and is currently being commercialised. This paper will focus on copper leaching and recovery and iron rejection from a chalcopyrite flotation concentrate.

The investigations set forth in the following pages were made in the field in Newfoundland during the summer of 1927, and later in the laboratories and library of McGill University, and in the library of the Canadian Geological Survey at Ottawa, with the purpose of collating and adding to our knowledge of the geology of an area roughly wedge-shaped in outline, and nearly nine thousand square miles in extent, stretching across the centre of the island of Newfoundland, from the southwest to the northeast coasts. To the description of this district, which contains most of the known mineral occurrences of Newfoundland, the term mineral belt is here introduced.

The world wide growth dynamics and the continuously growing demand for energy, results in increasing energy prices. Looking from this point, the efficient exploitation of fossil fuel deposits has become a more important factor to the production of energy raw materials than ever before. This shall be reached by an increase of the automation degree of the bucket wheel excavator in the open pit mining as well as a quality increase of the entire mining process chain. A further optimization of this operation can only be achieved by gathering additional information about the input parameters. The earlier and more exact the description of the input parameter, the greater the effectiveness of the entire process chain. To address this major issue, the RWE Power AG assigned the Institute for Transportation and Automation Technology with the research project "SIMT, Sensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the Interfaces" [Kes07]. Presently, the control of the bucket wheel excavator is carried out manually by the operator, as well as the visual identification of the different geological layers and the energy raw materials. In this paper, a sensor-system is introduced, which was developed in order to transfer the manual material identification and detection of interfaces into an automatic online procedure. A special challenge and the main focus of this contribution is the integration of this sensor system into a bucket of the bucket wheel excavator. For measuring procedures where direct contact with the in situ material is necessary, the sensor has to be integrated into the bucket. Since direct contact with the material is not necessary, it can be integrated next to the bucket wheel. The results of a preliminary study show that although there is a broad spectrum of sensor technologies for material and interface identification, only a few are suitable for an application in on-line measuring at the bucket wheel excavator. Taking into consideration the demands on the sensor technology, the studies carried out and comparable applications of individual sensor technologies which have already taken place in practice, the integration of the following measuring systems have been realized: ground penetrating radar / reflection measurements, geo electric, resistance geo electric technology. The solution developed in the research project offers for the first time the direct integration of sensor systems into the bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. It will now be possible to test other measurement methods and sensors, not only for the ones already mentioned. As an example the integration of a triaxial accelerometer to measure the solid borne sound and vibrations concerning the cutting of different materials will be shown.

Mining mobile equipment is becoming larger in order to lower operation cost and increase productivity; however, their performance characteristics are often limited by the tire capabilities. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of tire research, the lack of comprehensive knowledge on tire performance characteristics impedes the advancement of off-the-road tires. Longer haul roads, and a severe operating environment make tires more vulnerable than other components of a vehicle. Furthermore, due to a limited availability of large tires, mines are facing shortages. Thus mines and tire service companies are keen to improve tire performance, extend tire life and hence lower operating costs. This paper reviews the relevant tire performance research, analyzes tire interactions with the surrounding environment, tire maintenance practices and operational issues using a case study based on data collected during an ongoing project with Fountain Tire.

"A computer model has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long- and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The model involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. IntroductionMining of mineral deposits in such a fashion so that, at depletion the maximum possible profit is realized, has been a very old problem of the mineral industry. In the past, when high-grade ore reserves were readily available and profits were very high, no question of optimum profitability was raised.However, recently the complexity of both open pit and underground mining has been increased tremendously. The additional problems of continuously rising production costs on one hand and of depressed metal prices worldwide on the other, have been demanding optimum profitabiliy from every mining venture .Particularly in the area of open pit mining, the sequence of ore and waste extraction has now become very important since the size of the pits and of the mining equipment has increased enormously. The process of open pit mining involves a continuous change of the open pit surface and there are many feasible plans of extraction which lead to the same final pit shape (ultimate pit limits). Each of these feasible plans generates a production schedule over the entire mine life, which mayor may not be optimal."

"High tonnage, low grade gold mines such as Omai’s afford economies of scale that are unto their own insufficient to sustain profitability at today’s depressed gold price. Complimenting profitability objectives is the perpetual challenge to reduce operating costs and optimize unit operating efficiencies while being ever vigilant of issues such as environmental control.Key to achieving these objectives at Omai are throughput and availability gains, gold recovery improvements, cost cutting, a skilled workforce and reliable power generation.This paper attempts a cursory review of startup-to-date plant performance advances and future performance-driven objectives.INTRODUCTIONCommercial gold production at Omai commenced in January 1993 with annual output climbing to 250,000 opy by the end of 1994. A mill expansion completed in August 1996 increased gold production to 340,000 opy by the end of 1997. Current milling capacity is 20,000 in tpd (nom.) with actual capacity exceeding 24,000 mtpd on occasion depending on ore size and competency. Mill feed consists of hardrock (andesite, quartz diorite and rhyolite) and softrock (saprolite, laterite) at a nominal ratio of 70:30, respectively. Present day average weighted grade of the feed is 1.4 g/t gold.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONPrimary crushing, ore handling and the original 12,000 mtpd hard and soft rock SABC mill, hereafter referred to as Mill ‘A’, remains essentially as documented by Konigsmann (1 994) complete with poststartup modifications. The mill expansion, hereafter referred to as Mill ‘B’, features an 8000 mtpd hard rock SABC grinding circuit similar in configuration to Mill ‘A’ and differing only in equipment size. Mill ‘B’ includes a 9000 H.P.,reversible variable speed , single pinion drive, 32 ft. x 15 ft. SAG inill , a 7 ft. short head pebble crusher and two parallel 5400 H.P., 16.5 ft. x 30 ft. ball mills with dedicated cyclone packs consisting of D26 hydrocyclones."

A series of fault slip seismic events have occurred at Garson mine. The events have occurred during development advancement exposing faults, after the extraction of single stopes due to mining induced stress change, and due to time effects after delays of many days during which no mining had been conducted. This paper discusses the study completed consisting of a global or holistic approach aimed at mitigating some of the risks associated with the structurally controlled rockbursts at Garson. Background Garson mine is located in the south east area of the Sudbury Basin (Ontario, Canada). Mining occurs in two main ore bodies (the #1 Shear and the #4 Shear) which are copper-nickel-sulphide and occur within shear zones that (as well as the ore bodies) strike approximately east-west and dip steeply south. From the north (footwall), lithologies progress (Figure 1a) from norite (NR), to greenstone (GS), and finally to meta-sediment (MTSD). A generally WNW-ESE striking, bifurcated sub-vertical dyke of olivine diabase (OLDI) cuts the series. The current active mining block at Garson is between 4700L and 5100L (levels denote depth in feet below surface).

"Finely disseminated minerals in ores require intensive size reduction to achieve sufficient liberation for the subsequent concentration process. The use of small grinding media in conventional ball mills as a replacement for the usual 2.5 to 3.8 cm balls (1.0 to 1.5 in) produces a finer size distribution at a lower power drawn by the mill motor. However, the conditions ensuring a successful application of using small media for fine grinding are still not fully understood and some plants faced issues to keep the newly introduced steel charge inside the mill during industrial trials. The retention conditions of small media are investigated in this paper using a continuously operated 40 x 40 cm laboratory grinding mill. The tests assess the effect of the steel charge level, the slurry solids concentration and the feed rate on the rate of ejection of the grinding media. The dominant variable is found to be the filling of the mill with the grinding media, followed by the mill feed rate. Results show that increasing the slurry solids concentration within a grinding mill may be favorable for the retention of the media inside the mill.IntroductionProcessing of complex ores often requires the use of fine grinding to liberate finely disseminated minerals. Grinding requirements for a P80 of less than 0.02 mm are not uncommon, and different grinding mills are available for such application (Leonida, 2014; Pease et al., 2006; Davey, 2006; Orford et al., 2006; Nesset et al., 2006). Even conventional horizontal ball mills charged with of 2.5 cm or larger grinding media can be used for fine grinding. However, simulation (Orford and al., 2006) and plant observations (Alves and L-Bouchet, 2005; Brisette, 2010; Brisette and Roman, 2012) demonstrated the advantages of using smaller grinding media in terms of size reduction and energy consumption."

"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission. The basic system is quite simple. It consists of five main elements, as shown in Figure 1, which are:1. Prime Mover - generally an electric motor.2. Hydraulic Pump - fixed or variable positive displacement type such as a piston or vane p.mp which displaces a constant amount of fluid for ead1 revolution - this unit converts mechanical energy of the prime mover into fluid energy.3. "A simple approach to optimizing the performance of an operating carbon in pulp (CIP) or carbon in leach (CIL) plant is presented. It is possible to reproduce the performance of an operating CIP or CIL plant in the laboratory, in small scale batch tests in which the rates of gold leaching and carbon adsorption are determined, coupled with mathematical models that translate the batch kinetic data into predicted steady state profiles of gold in solution and on the carbon across multi-stage adsorption circuits.Once the performance of the commercial plant has been mimicked by the model, the plant operating parameters can be varied systematically in the model, and the likely response of the plant to the stepwise change can be determined. In this way it is possible to inexpensively optimize the design of both greenfields CIP or CIL circuits and plant expansions, or optimize the operating parameters of an existing plant, with no disruption to plant operations and no economic risk to the mining company.This approach has been adopted by IAMGOLD Corporation, to the immediate benefit of two of their existing gold operations. The methodology adopted and the results achieved are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe carbon in pulp (CIP) and carbon in leach (CIL) processes became firmly established in the gold mining industry in the 1980s, initially in South Africa and Australia, from where they spread rapidly to all the gold producing regions of the world. The percentage of annual global gold production by activated carbon-based processes grew from zero in the 1970s to almost 70% by the turn of the century, which represented a phenomenal rate of acceptance of a new technology by a traditionally conservative industry. The main reason for this rapid acceptance of the new technology was the fact that the first few large plants built in South Africa convincingly demonstrated better gold recoveries than the traditional filtration/Merrill Crowe process, with lower capital and operating costs. And as the plants developed an operating track record over their first few years of life, they proved to be remarkably robust mechanically, and highly tolerant of plant upsets, changes in feed composition and solution phase contaminants that had caused problems in Merrill Crowe plants."

Secondary leaching of previously leached supergene copper ore has been developed and implemented at Teck’s Quebrada Blanca operations. This consists of using in-situ leaching techniques aided by geophysics to recover the residual metal value from dormant copper leaching heaps. These heaps of crushed and agglomerated ore had been leached 20 years previously but still contained significant copper values. The concept was first tested on a 3,200 m² sector, where injection wells introduced leaching solution into a production zone and electro-resistivity tomography was used to track solution movement within. Operating parameters such as well spacing and injection flow rates were determined. Copper recovery and leaching performance were evaluated based on solution and metallurgical balances. Both ferric leaching and bacterial leaching were enhanced through strategies to pull air into the heap. Positive results from the initial test prompted a larger, industrial pilot test on a 60,000 m² area and 97 injection wells. This larger test obtained a copper recovery of 30% in 457 days. Secondary recovery is now being implemented to all of the abandoned heaps at Quebrada Blanca and has become a production stream. This technology has the potential of wide application to mature copper heap leach operations, and Teck has patented the process and associated methodologies. INTRODUCTION Heap leaching of copper secondary sulphides has been carried out at Quebrada Blanca (QB) since 1994. Ore from the supergene deposit was crushed and agglomerated prior to leaching. Originally, the ore was leached in 6 m lifts stacked one on top of another, known as a static pad configuration. However, in 1998, after the second lift, the operation changed to a dynamic pad configuration; the ore was leached in a single lift and the resulting residues were removed to make way for fresh ore (Yáñez, Ahlborn, & Ramos, 2007). The first two static lifts were left in place and served as a foundation for the dynamic lifts above. Those two buried lifts of leached residues, some 16.8 million tonnes and covering an area of approximately 0.71 million m², remained buried under the dynamic pad.

"Some non-flotation chemistries are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust. Since the dosage levels are generally not very large, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect a specific chemical has on the productivity of the flotation circuit. Hudbay and Ashland Water Technologies developed a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5 ppm to 500 ppm). Laboratory results indicate that this protocol helps to predict the potential interference that a particular chemistry will have on the flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFrom a chemical perspective, flotation is a very complex system involving more than the reagents used for flotation. Along with collectors, frothers, modifiers, suppressants and activators, there can be antiscalants for water treatment, dust suppressants used in the mining process, residual flocculants from recycled thickener overflows, grinding aids, and many other types of chemicals that are added upstream of a flotation circuit. Although these other chemicals are usually used at very low doses, it is important to know if they affect the flotation process detrimentally in the event of a spill or a build up from recycled water.Laboratory flotation testing of these chemicals characterizes their effects, but testing at expected doses in the float can mask the effects of the chemicals in the plant. Also, simple tests that do not measure the kinetics of flotation do not reveal the effects the other chemicals have on the flotation circuit. Thus, a new flotation protocol was needed to expose the full effects of chemical additives and to assist in choosing the chemical with the lowest potential for a negative effect.FLOTATION KINETICSMeasuring recovery kinetics in a laboratory flotation cell is a well-established procedure: analyzing concentrates taken in a timed sequence to determine the recovery rate of individual cells in a flotation circuit. The recovery from the early flotation cells are a true measurement of how well a flotation chemical is performing. The fatigue behavior of AM60 high pressure die casting magnesium alloys was studied in a straincontrolled manner. The fatigue test was interrupted every 2,000 cycles for X-ray tomography scanning. The specimen was removed to be scanned on a desktop micro-CT system. The value of using X-ray tomography in a fatigue properties study was assessed with respect to porosity, cracks and fracture surfaces. The 3D analysis and model results showed porosity could be well measured and modelled in 3D. Defects bands are made of pores under 50 µm in volume-equivalent sphere diameter. Larger pores are randomly distributed in the region between two defect bands. Observation of cracks by X-ray tomography occurs in three ways such that the 3D model gives the best illustration of crack-porosity interaction while the other two methods have better detectability on crack initiation and crack tip observation. X-ray tomography is also of value in failure analysis on fracture surfaces. By summarizing X-ray tomography data during fatigue testing and observing fracture surfaces on a 3D model, a better understanding on the crack initiation, crack-porosity interaction and the morphology of fracture surface is achieved.

Experimental Mine, Val d'Or, Quebec, Experiments on the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives have been conducted in a 1 m3 explosion chamber. The explosives tested are ANFO, emulsion, aluminized emulsion and Detasheet. By controlling the composition of the ANFO and the emulsion explosive the oxygen balance could be changed in order to identify the dominant factors in the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives. Experimental results, combined with theoretical calculations, show that the temperature of the detonation products is the most important parameter in the ignition of the dust cloud while the combustible detonation products are of secondary importance in the case of non-aluminized mining explosives. In the case of aluminized explosives and explosives having very negative oxygen balance the ignition of the dust cloud is assisted by the large amount of combustible detonation products.

"Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators, which produce very high ratios of concentration, have become common place for recovering free gold within milling circuits. Their effectiveness has proven to be especially useful in recovering finer gold particles. The knowledge related to testing, modeling and scale-up of these systems has been well established over the recent decade mostly due to the efforts of the late Dr. Andre Laplante.Gravity separation technologies such as jigs, spirals and shaking tables can provide the increased mass yields required for minerals that occur at higher concentrations than gold, however their effectiveness tends to diminish at finer particle sizes. The development of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators has provided the opportunity to be able to recover a wide range of minerals at finer particle size classes when compared to the more traditional gravity concentration devices. These concentrators also provide additional benefits such as smaller unit footprint and automated operation.This paper discusses the background, current practices and future applications for high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONGravity concentration, one of the oldest mineral beneficiation processes, has evolved over the decades and continues to play an important role in modern mineral processing operations. The development and growth of froth flotation in the early part of the twentieth century led to a decline in the importance of gravity concentration. However, gravity concentration continued to be used for ores that are difficult to beneficiate using froth flotation; such as tin, tungsten, niobium/tantalum, iron, industrial minerals and oxidized coal. In recent decades, many operations have begun to employ a combination of both gravity concentration and froth flotation Since flotation relies on surface chemistry and gravity concentration relies on specific gravity differences, putting these techniques in series provides today’s metallurgist with unprecedented opportunities to maximize grade and recovery of many of these minerals."

This paper develops a series of three-dimensional simulations for the Bayou Choctaw Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The U.S. Department of Energy plans to leach two new caverns and convert of one of the existing caverns within the Bayou Choctaw salt dome to expand its petroleum reserve storage capacity. An existing finite element mesh from previous analyses is modified by adding two caverns and increasing the size of existing Cavern 102. The structural integrity of the three expansion caverns and the interaction between all the caverns in the dome are investigated. The impacts of the expansion on underground creep closure, surface subsidence, infrastructure stability, and well integrity are quantified. The results show that from a structural viewpoint, the locations of the two newly proposed expansion caverns are acceptable, and all three expansion caverns can be safely constructed and operated.

"Reporting of the gold production during a month implies to estimate the mass of gold that is processed by a mill, recovered as dorés, lost to the tailings and the change of gold inventory within the plant equipments. Carbon in pulp and/or carbon in leach tanks may contain gold inventory as large as 72 000 g (2 200 troy oz) of gold which needs to be estimated from measurements obtained from sampling the material contained in a tank. Sampling and analysis introduce measurement errors that could be systematic and/or random. This paper examines the effect of measurement errors on the estimation of the gold inventory and on the variation of the inventory in the carbon in leach tanks of the Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited Lapa concentrator. Results of the analysis demonstrate that the inventory is measured with ±10% reproducibility, while the variation of inventory used for mass balance is known with ±300% reproducibility.INTRODUCTIONThe preparation of a production report implies to reconcile measured data with the constraint of material balance over the considered period of production. The sampling and data reconciliation problems were recently reviewed by Morrison (2008) and Jansen (2009a; 2009b). Typically a production report is prepared to cover a period over which the mass conservation hypothesis can be considered valid. In gold processing plants, the change of inventory can seldom be neglected and plays a significant role in material balance calculations. This is particularly true for circuits using carbon adsorption, where the complete cycle of carbon is measured in days.In a 2000 t/d gold ore processing plant, the inventory can be as large as 140 000 g of gold in gravity concentrator bins, carbon in pulp tanks and in the electrolysis circuit. This is equivalent to the mass of gold that fed the circuit during 10 days of operation with 7 g/t feed assays. The change of inventory may therefore strongly impact the production figures and especially the plant recovery at the end of a week or a month. Despite the financial impact associated with gold inventory, few publications are devoted to the subject. Bruington (1991) and Morrison (2008) discussed the problem and stressed the need for the development of reliable methods to estimate the gold inventory in carbon in pulp or carbon in leach circuits."

"Minera Penmont’s La Herradura is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with a two-stage crushing plant and heap leaching facility. Gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130 000 oz gold per year and its treatment capacity is approximately 22 000 t/d. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to coarse visible gold, which in some cases ranges from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols were established during exploration and prior to start-up of operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. However, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block consisting of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to start-up of operations (existing) and the new protocol (leaching). In the existing protocol, sub-sampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying was used to estimate the gold content on a 50 g sample. In the leaching protocol, a 12 000 g sample of bottle-rolled cyanide was leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this rotary sampling protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the leaching protocol.Test results were compared in three groups: < 0.3 g/t (below cut-off), 0.3 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall, results show that the protocol established prior to start-up of operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

"In 1995, Louvicourt Mine started one of the first paste backfill operations in Canada. From 500,000 tonnes in 1995, the annual paste backfill tonnage produced reached 800,000 tonnes in 1999. The maximum throughput of the surface plant (including binders) is 3,50Ot/d with a final density of 75 to 76% solids which gives a slump of 15 to 17cm. Following the start-up of the paste backfill plant, the backfill strength performance levels were well below the pilot plant’s predictions. The introduction of ferrous slag, laboratory tests on various binder ratios with or without additives, and the desliming of the tailings enabled us to optimize the mix and operation costs. Primary and secondary stopes are filled respectively with a paste containing 4.5% and 2% binders consisting of a mixture of 20% cement and 80% ferrous slag. In certain stopes, the binder ratio may vary from 2 to 7%, but always in a ratio of 80/20. Six years after start-up, or 4.5mt of paste backfill later, this paper discusses the present operation and the major changes that have occurred over the years to optimize both the operation and the paste fill quality.INTRODUCTIONLouvicourt Mine is operated by Aur Resources Inc. which owns 30% of the shares. Its partners are Novicourt Inc. (45%, subsidiary of Noranda Inc.) and Teck Corporation (25%). The mine is located in the north-west part of Quebec, about 600 km north of Montreal and about 25 km east of Val d’Or. The mine commenced commercial production in July 1994."

"The tungsten-bismuth-molybdenum deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs in greisenized and silicified tuffite * and feldspar porphyry in and adjacent to volcanic necks. The ore minerals occur as veins and veinlets and as disseminated grains in gangue. These minerals can be grouped into three assemblages. Assemblage 1 consists of oxides and phosphates of W, Ti, Fe, Nb, Sn, Ta and rare-earth elements, with the main minerals being deposited in the sequence wolframite, rutile, cassiterite. Assemblage 2 consists of arsenopyrite, molybdenite and bismuth, and assemblage 3 of sulphides with minor cassiterite and arsenopyrite. Sphalerite is the main sulphide mineral, but it contains minute inclusions of copper-tin- and indium-bearing minerals. Textural relations suggest that most of the elements can be recovered from this ore by conventional mineral beneficiation and extraction methods, but a variety of techniques must be employed. It is expected that the wolframite and molybdenite can be recovered satisfactorily, but poor recoveries are expected for bismuth and cassiterite. A sphalerite concentrate can be readily obtained by flotation, but it would contain a wide variety of elements. It is suggested that leaching be used to recover the bismuth and the elements in the sphalerite concentrate."
