The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

"Detailed studies have been conducted on the dispersion of uranium in stream waters and sediments around various types of mineralization and hitherto unexplained anomalous areas in the Okanagan Valley and Highland region of south-central British Columbia. These studies were part of the jointly funded and planned Federal-Provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program of the Geological Survey of Canada and the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. Statistical analysis of regional data indicates that U in stream waters and sediments varies considerably for different rock types, thus affecting data interpretation. In addition, the data demonstrate a poor correlation between U in stream waters and their associated sediments which can be largely accounted for by variations in climate and water and sediment composition. Regional trends in the distribution of U can be explained in terms of the above secondary factors as well as primary metallization phenomena.Significant correlations between U and F, and U and Mo can be explained by certain magmatic and mineral-forming processes. U shows little correlation with other base metals.The dispersion characteristics of U in the vicinity of Miocene "" basal type "" mineralization ; uraniferous pegmatite terranes, anomalous lineaments in granitic terranes and high-background volcano-sedimentary areas are discussed. Highly anomalous U concentrations in waters and sediments may not always be indicative of mineralization, and guidelines for interpretation require a sound knowledge of the geological and secondary processes operative in the area."

"FOUR PAPERS ON CEMENTED BACKFILL were given at the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1970:Weaver, W. Somewhat over ten years ago, The Inter-national Nickel Company of Canada, Limited and Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited started experimenting with the addition of Portland cement to mill tailings to produce improved backfill and cheaper floors for scraping. Shortly after, the Canada Cement Company Limited (now Canada Cement Lafarge Ltd.), with full support of the two mining companies, started an extensive research program to provide the technologic-al data necessary to exploit what was obviously going to be a significant development in mining technology."

"The Red Dog deposit of the western Brooks Range, Alaska was discovered in the 1970s. Two mineralized areas are present, the Main and Hilltop deposits. With indicated and inferred reserves of 77 million tonnes of 17.1% zinc, 5.0% lead and 82 g/ tonne silver, the Main deposit of Red Dog represents one of the world's largest zinc-lead deposit s. Since serious evaluation by Cominco commenced in 1980, a better understanding of deposit geology has been gained through 10 715m of diamond drilling and concurrent geologic, geophysical and geotechnical studies. The Red Dog deposit is of Mississippian to Pennsylvanian or Early Permian age, and straddles a redox transition in fine-grained and chemical sediments of the Red Dog structural sequence.The Main deposit has been modified by regional Mesozoic thrust faulting and isoclinal folding, resulting in complex interrelationships between silica rock, sulphide rock and barite. Multiple lines of evidence suggest the Main deposit contains both a syngenetic stratiform and a replacement component. Ore fluids were probably derived by regional lateral movement of brines through a coarse clastic footwall aquifer, then upwards along block faults to the site of the Red Dog deposit.Historical PerspectiveThe region in the vicinity of the Red Dog deposit (Fig. 1) was first prospected by J. W. Kelley in the late 1880s (Orth, 1967). The first coordinated inland exploration was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1910-1911 and 1923-1926 (Smith, 1913; Smith and Mertie, 1930). The earliest reports of zinc-lead mineralization in the region include reference to samples collected at unknown locales by Eskimo prospectors (Anderson, 1944). In 1955 stratiform pyrite was discovered 19 km west of Red Dog by I.L. Tailleur of the U.S. Geological Survey (Tailleur, 1970). The first reported visit to what is known as Red Dog was by I.L. Tailleur in 1968, who was field checking a colour anomaly noted by B. Baker, a local bush pilot (Tailleur, 1970; Moore et al., 1986) ."

The cold, or Kississing, Lake area in northwestern Manitoba was the scene of considerable prospecting and mining activity last summer. At the Sherritt-Gordon property, four diamond drills were at work exploring a large deposit of copper and zinc ore, and underground work was in progress on this deposit from two shafts. Some preliminary diamond drilling was completed in five other deposits, and surface exploration work was in progress at a dozen or more additional localities where copper and zinc sulphides were known to be present. Many prospectors visited the area and spent some time in search for new deposits, but apparently few discoveries were made; consequently, last autumn some returned a little disappointed in the area as a prospecting field. Although many visited Cold Lake area last summer in the search for mineral deposits, it should be emphasized that this new prospecting field is a very large one, and that to date only a small proportion of the ground has been examined, except in a very general way. Within the past 18 months, a village of several dozen cabins, and with a population of l00 or more persons, has sprung up on the shore of Cold lake, just west of the Sherritt-Gordon mine. This at present is the business centre of the area, and two banks, a post office - named Kississing by the Postal authorities - a Mining Recorder's office, as well as several restaurants and stores carrying a fairly complete stock of groceries, dry-goods, and general prospecting equipment, are already established.

"A GLANCE BACK AT what has happened in the past is often a useful guide to the future, although it should be used mainly to provide a sense of direction rather than a map that must be followed. As a preamble to discussing some of the questions posed by the organizing committee it may be appropriate to briefly review the distribution and careers of the graduates of our Department since the first degree in mining engineering was awarded in 1916. An attempt has been made to keep a record of the locations and careers of the Department's 540 graduates in mining and metallurgical engineering. Almost all of those who graduated before 1930 have now retired, but a very large proportion held positions as senior executives prior to retirement. A major proportion of those who graduated before 1950 are now in what might be considered senior management positions. Those who have 10 to 20 years of experience are generally in work of senior engineering responsibility or in supervisory or junior management ranks, while those who graduated in the last ten years appear to be generally in staff engineering or junior supervisory positions. This classification is admittedly imprecise because it is difficult to determine from a job description whether duties should be considered of an engineering or management nature - a distinction between the two terms is often over-emphasized. Nevertheless, the trend from technical engineering to management responsibilities with seniority and years of experience is clear in the careers that we have been able to follow."

We are regularly told that before making a new investment one should seek the advice of his banker. If we were to place the subject matter of this paper before bankers. other than those who have experience in our mining camps, their reply would probably be evasive. However, if for example: a mining company asks them for a loan and offers as security certain mining investments, they are, in most cases, explosively candid. The idea is preposterous, unless, under Section 88 of the Bank Act, the mining company is able to deposit with the bank, gold or silver bullion, to an amount sufficiently in excess of the loan, to provide for what the banker describes as a reasonable margin of safety in case of contingencies. In addition the directors of the mine personally must jointly and severally guarantee payment of the loan. With any of these conditions missing the banking atmosphere becomes chilly. The local manager explains that the general situation, and particularly European conditions, are so unsettled that head office has warned him that his discretionary powers must not be exceeded under any circumstances.

The introduction consists of back-ground information, of an historical and statistical nature, relating to the Thompson mine. The geological presentation is based on illustrations that are intended to provide a progressively closer look at the ore occurrence. The illustrations consist of an index map, a geological map of a 15-by 85-mile area including the Thompson mine, a series of four maps dealing with the geophysics and geology of a 6-by 4\f.j-mile area at Thompson, a mine level plan and corresponding section, two sto11e 11lans and corresponding sections, and photo-graphs and photomicrogra11hs of the various one types. T HE Thompson mine is located about 400 miles due north of Winnipeg. The ore deposit was dis-covered in February, 1956. Five years later on March 25, 1961, the Thompson production facilities were officially dedicated with the shearing of the first nickel produced at the Thompson refinery. Full production, at an annual rate of more than 75,000,000 lbs. of refined nickel, was attained later in the year.

"8.1. IntroductionThe stoichiometry of most named platinum-group minerals (POM) is known (cf. Cabri, 1981b, in Chapter 7), but, because these minerals are subject to a wide range of element substitutions, representative analyses require treatment in a separate chapter (section 8.2). The analyses, in all cases done by electron microprobe, are grouped in sections according to the principal platinum-group element (POE) for each POM, and then follow sequentially with increasing amounts of the principal POE starting with the ideal composition, when known. In order to facilitate reference to specific POM by name, an alphabetical listing is also given (Table 8.1). A range of compositions, in addition to one or several ""representative"" analyses, is given for some POM when more than one analysis has been reported for a particular locality. The tables of POM analyses (Tables 8.2 to 8. 76) include at least one analysis for every locality for which data have been published, to the best of the authors' knowledge. All analyses are referenced for locality and publication source, and include several unpublished analyses (all but one done at CANMET). Most analyses have been rounded off to one decimal place for amounts more than one per cent and their formulae calculated on the basis of an even number of total atoms. In all tables, ''n.d.'' stands for elements sought for but not detected and a dash signifies elements not sought, or when these haven't been specificed in the publication source.Section 8.3 contains tabulated analyses and, in some cases, also includes a critical assessment of POE-bearing minerals in which the POE occur in trace or minor quantities. The organization of the data in this section is by mineral groups; e.g., sulphides, sulpharsenides, silicates, etc. Some of these data are also discussed in Chapter 4 by Crocket (1981) and are discussed briefly in Chapter 6 by Crocket and Cabri (1981)."

"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. "The mining of the ore bodies at Rabbit Lake has in the past been by the open pit method. This method is presently being used to develop the B-zone and will continue into the future with the development of two smaller ore bodies, the A-zone and D-zone. The Eagle Point orebody will be developed by an underground method which will provide production and employment into the next century.The ore bodies at B-zone, A-zone and D-zone are unique in that they are located under Wollaston Lake. To permit mining by the open pit method a steel-celled dyke has been constructed around the north end of the B-zone. This same dyking method will be used for the A -zone and D-zone. INTRODUCTIONMine development at Rabbit Lake commenced in 1970when a detailed engineering feasibility study established the viability of the Rabbit Lake deposit. In 1972 construction of the mill and camp site began. Construction materials were seasonally hauled to the site over a winter road until November 1973when the government of Saskatchewan completed an all-weather road to within six miles of the operation.In October 1974, stripping of the Rabbit Lake open pit began with the removal of overburden and lake bottom sediments from the previously drained Rabbit Lake. The first ore was processed by the mill in June 1975and by October the mill was producing three million pounds per year. The design capacity of five million pounds annually was first achieved in 1977 and maintained until 1981, when lower ore grades resulted in lower production rates .It was clear when mining at Rabbit Lake began that, without additional reserves, the Rabbit Lake operation had a life of less than 10 years. Exploration, therefore, continued in the immediate area in an attempt to discover additional uranium mineralization."

"The Quintette Coal Limited property is located in the north east coal area of British Columbia. A basic agreement with the Japanese steel industry was ex ecuted on January 27, 1981 for the sale of 69.5 million tonnes of Quintette metallurgical coal over a 14.5-year period. This contract period can be extended by Jive years by mutual agree ment. Sale agreements have also been signed for the sale of 19.4 million tonnes of oxidized coal over a 15-year period. Work started on site development in the late summer of 1981, and at present, two of the four eventual pits-the McConkey and Frame-are under development. The pits are currently in a pres/ripping phase. These pits are notable for the stripping volumes that have to be removed from relatively small pit areas. in order to provide for the required detailed rapid short-range planning of these pits, engineering will be computerized, as will the truck dispatch system. The mining area lies 21.1 km from the plant site by road and the transport of raw coal LO the plant is by means of a highspeed conveyor system which has a total length of 13.4 km with a vertical drop of 740 m. The surface plant facility was designed on a modularized basis to facilitate maintenance, and is designed to enable the use ofgravity flow ofraw coal and heavy media in the plant to minimize the use of pumps. The construction of the plant and mine site facilities is on-going, and the first coal production is scheduled for early December 1983. Introduction Quintette Coal Limited is a Canadian company incorporated in the province of British Columbia in 1971. Denison Mines Limited is the manager of Quintette's activities. Equity in Quintette Coal Limited is held by several shareholders, with interests as follows: Denison Mines 'Limited, 500Jo; Charbonnages de France International S.A., 120Jo; and Japanese interest, 38%. The project will develop almost 120 million tonnes of coal for marketing during its first 20 years of production. All of the planned production tonnage has been committed to Japanese markets. Most of the coal will be metallurgical grade, and the remainder will be a high-quality thermal coal. The Mcconkey and Frame pits, which will initially provide the mine's production, will commence production in early December 1983 and will, in 1985, reach the full annual production of 5 million tonnes clean metallurgical coal and 1,380,000 tonnes of clean thermal coal."

This study focused on determining the stability of thin shotcrete fill fences at a hard rock mine in northwestern Ontario during increased pour rates of paste backfill. Determination of the stability of the fence is needed for both personnel safety and to avoid failure of a fence. Failure of a fill fence during backfill activities would have severe impacts on production and potential hazards to nearby workers. Approved fill fences at the mine are a slender design of 10.5 centimeters of shotcrete applied to a rebar framework with burlap lined ?bedspring? backing. Approved mine standards dictate that fill rates may not exceed 1.5 meters of paste depth per 10-hour shift when pouring behind a flat fill fence. To decrease the backfill cycle time the study looked at fence stability during increased pour rates of 2.5 meters paste depth poured within a 10-hour shift. An instrumentation design was developed including pressure cells, strain gauges, and tilt-meters that were built into experimental fences to observe the effects of increased pour rates on lateral wall pressures, strain development in the rebar and shotcrete reinforcement, and physical deformation patterns along the face of the fence. The data was analyzed for overall stability.

In gravity processing of gold-containing ore the target produced concentrate which is high gold grade primary concentrate contains a significant amount of cassiterite (SnO2). The plant attempts aiming at concentrate processing using a standard pyrometallurgical technology did not provide any positive results. The present paper is dedicated to development and testing of improved technology for pyrometallurgical processing of rich gold primary concentrate with high cassiterite content. According to material composition study primary concentrates produced at the plant contained 1.5–2.0% Au, 0.1–0.3% Ag, 55–65% SnO2, 20–25% Fe2O3, and 10–15% Fe3O4. The developed technology included alkaline nodulizing of primary concentrate mixed with sodium hydroxide and carbonate at 350–650°? with cake production. In blend nodulizing stannum and iron passed into sodium stannate (Na2SnO3) and sodium ferrate (NaFeO2) respectively. The blend of cake and fluxing agents was smelted at 1,150–1,200°? resulting in dore gold and slag production. Sodium stannate with 360°? melting point is well dissolved in slag system Na2OSiO2- B2O3-CaO. During plant tests 18.5 kg of high gold grade primary concentrate were processed, 1350 g of dore gold and 75 kg of slag were produced. Dore gold contained 16.5% Au, 0.95% Ag, 78.0% Sn, 3.1% Fe. Slag contained 12.4 g/t Au, 6.7 g/t Ag, 9.8% Sn, and 5.6% Fe. Gold recovery to target alloy was equal to 99.58 %, 87.8% of Sn passed into slag. This new technology was accepted for application at the plant.

"10.1. IntroductionAs discussed by Westland (1981), the six platinum-group elements (PGE) belong to the Group VIII transition metals, to which iron, nickel and cobalt also belong. The chemical similarity between these nine metals accounts for the fact that they tend to be concentrated together as a result of geological processes. These processes started to effect the distribution of these metals at the very beginning of the earth's history.The first line in Table 1 gives the concentration of nickel and certain other Group VIII transition metals in carbonaceous chondrites, those meteorites with a composition that is believed to reflect best the composition of our planetary system apart from hydrogen and helium. The second line is the estimated concentration of the same elements in the earth as a whole. It is seen that these two estimates are quite similar, the earth being perhaps 2 to 3 times richer in these particular metals than the planetary system as a whole. The reason for this is not fully understood, but it may be due to the earth being formed by the accumulation and capture of a greater proportion of iron (and therefore siderophile-rich) than stoney (and therefore siderophile-poor) planetesimals than the planetary system itself.The third line in Table 1 is the average composition of the crust of the earth. With the exception of iron, all of the Group VIII transition elements are rare in the crust, present at concentrations of It tOO to Itt ,000 of that of the bulk earth. This is because the outstanding chemical characteristic of this group of elements is their siderophile nature; that is, their tendency to alloy with metallic iron. Because of this, once the earth became molten very early in its life history, these elements dissolved in the molten iron present at this stage and were removed from the outer accessible parts as this dense liquid sank to the centre of the earth to form the core. Although iron was the main instrument of concentration of the Group VIII metals, its much greater over-all abundance and its ability to combine with oxygen more easily than the others in the group means that significant amounts still remain in the oxidized portions of the earth.The fact that most of the Group VIII metals are available to use in workable concentrations at all is that they are 5 to 30 times more concentrated in the earth's mantle than the crust, as shown in line 4 of Table I. There has been a constant, if slow, interchange of matter between the mantle and the overlying crust throughout most of the earth's history and, under certain circumstances, this interchange has given rise to economic concentrations of metals."

"3.1. IntroductionAmong the six platinum-group elements (POE), four have identical cubic symmetry, two identical hexagonal symmetry (Table 3.1). Despite crystallographic differences, there is a clear relationship expressed in the chemistries of the POE: they tend to be mutually soluble in one another and can frequently substitute for one another in compounds with other elements. This chapter consolidates the data on phase relations of the POE and the compounds they form with elements selected for their known or potentially important mineralogical significance- As, Bi, Cu, Fe, Hg, In, Ni, Pb, S, Sb, Se, Sn and Te-together with selected data for the occurrence of POE in certain elements such as Au and Ag, and compounds such as FeS. Resources used to compile the data are those available from the chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature. First each element is discussed, with composition limits of solid solutions drawn from binary phase diagrams. Single element data are followed by a discussion of the relevant binary systems and a tabulation of data for binary compounds found in those systems (Table 3.2). Tables and diagrams for the ternary and quaternary systems for which information is available follow, and finally the very limited information on the solubility of POE in mineralogically important elements and compounds is presented.The chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature on the unary and binary systems is extensive and widely scattered in many languages and publications; fortunately, most of the data needed to compile this chapter can be found in reliable compendia. The most useful and most recent of these works is by Moffatt (1979), because it provides a ready index to all material relating to binary systems listed in previous compendia; furthermore, the Moffatt compendium will reportably be kept up to date by annual supplements."

Until a fire occurs, insurance and prevention work are often looked on as unavoidable necessities, but as insurance is back of all business credit, it is essential to know that in case of damage money will be available to cover the loss; while the interruption of production, often caused by a fire, brings home the realization that if prevention work avoids such an interruption, it is well worth while. Fire insurance is a legal contract guaranteeing the payment of large amounts to an owner, but it is possible there is no other important contract that receives so little consideration. Although previously carried on elsewhere, it is only of recent years that insurance engineering has been actively followed up in Canada, with inspections of an owner's property carried out for his benefit. Now inspections of this kind are made, advice on fire prevention and protection work ?is available, reports with recommendations with regard to the above are furnished periodically, and with this method applied the owner receives the broadest possible cover and security at the lowest cost. Rates are set by the underwriters by rating schedules which charge for defects in a building and allow credits for protection and other favourable features . These schedules are based on the past record of loss of mining properties as a class, so that a fire in another mining property indirectly affects you, but the amount paid is reduced in proportion as your property is improved. A survey of the literature reveals wide differences in the procedures used in making iron ore pellets and in the properties of the pellets obtained. In this paper, the methods of production and the properties of pellets, as reported in the literature, are examined in an effort to determine what correlations exist between them. An attempt is also made to determine the levels of the properties of pellets which are considered acceptable and desirable in modern practice. M UCH has been written regarding the important changes which have been taking place recently in the iron ore industry. As the demand for ore has increased and the supply of direct-shipping ore has dwindled, tl1e problems associated with the utilization of lower grade ores ha\•e been intensely investigated and important advances in both beneficiation and agglomeration techniques have taken place. In particular, there has been a great deal of activity in connection with the pelletizing method of agglomeration. Over the past six decades, Hatch has helped several industrial processing facilities in debottlenecking their operations, allowing them to produce more with the same equipment, to reduce and even eliminate expenditure investments, or to increase the return value of their expansion projects. These successes result from the application of a proven analysis approach that can be applied to any industrial facility. A five-stage methodology is discussed and demonstrated with a specific example of a nickel concentrator optimization study. The first stage is an observation stage which allows to meet key actors at the plant, develop mutual understanding of problems, understand operating philosophy, and efficiently collect large amounts of operating and maintenance data. Following is a data compilation stage during which data is analyzed over a representative time period to identify parameters that significantly affect the production, to evaluate data reliability and to define the focus of the upcoming analysis. Quantitative metrics are defined using statistical tools such as pivot tables, histograms, percentiles and MDR (Maximum demonstrated production rate during 3 to 7 consecutive days). Then, the production bottlenecks are identified by a thorough analysis of the facility’s control philosophy, process throughput, equipment capacity, availability, downtime causes, and interaction between components of each circuit. Understanding the maintenance practices and frequency of planned shutdown is also critical to this analysis. Opportunities for improvement are identified in collaboration with the operation, maintenance and engineering teams, ranked as a function of their impact on the bottlenecks and prioritized. The final and most critical stage involves engagement with the plant stakeholders, namely the operators and the maintenance staff members, to present the results of the analysis and obtain their participation in the implementation of the solutions. The benefits of the case study translated into: 10% production capacity gain, improved maintenance planning and avoidance of several million dollars of investment.
