A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

Precrusher stockpiles are designed principally as buffers to decouple the mining and processing operations. They are usually paddock dumped or dumped over a face to form fingers by dumping haul truckloads and reclaimed by front-end loader in an ad hoc manner. In addition, they are often not built and reclaimed to completion but continually added to and extracted from. While this design suits the mining process and is operationally simple, there can be little confidence in the grade of the ore that is fed to the crusher. This makes short-term grade control difficult and reconciliation back to the mine face imprecise. Well-designed and operated precrusher stockpiles can overcome these deficiencies.The different types of grade variability in mining are reviewed in this paper. The role of precrusher stockpiles in reducing short-term variability is discussed and their ineffectiveness in addressing long-term variability is highlighted. Their role in removing the serial correlation of the extracted ore is explained.Precrusher stockpiles carry out the four, at times competing, objectives of storing, buffering, blending and grade separation. Their actual design and operation result from a compromise between these four competing roles. These roles are explained in detail along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of precrusher stockpiles. The recommended blended-in blended-out stockpile (BIBO) design is discussed in detail. Matched pairs of BIBO stockpiles of limited tonnage built and reclaimed to completion retain the best knowledge of grade and facilitate the reconciliation process.Simulation studies have been carried out on BIBO stockpiles to understand the blending opportunities of the different options for building and reclaiming, and to identify the methods that achieve maximum blending. It was found that laying down rows in one direction and reclaiming across these rows gives the best blending. Matching the width of the reclaim face with the daily crushing requirements is also important. With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

The treatment plant at The Great Boulder Proprietary Gold Mines Limited was designed and erected by Chas. Ruwolt Proprietary Limited in 1934 to mill 12,000 short tons per month. The flow sheet called for fine grinding, straking, flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrates and cyanidation of the resulting calcine.In 1937 considerable alterations and additions were made to the plant. The grindin,g section was duplicated with addition of two 8 ft. x 6 ft. Abco Ball Mills to increase the throughput to 28,000 tons per month, and the flow sheet was changed from "straight flotation" to "precyanidation and flotation" neeessitating the addition of thickeners, agitators, Oliver filters and Edwards roasters.A further change to the flow sheet was made in 1942 with the introduction of sulphur dioxide conditioning ahead of the flotation section, to permit the treatment of 500,000 tons of oxidised ore. Since that date no major alterations were made to the flow sheet or equipment until 1950, when the modifications set out in this paper were commenced with the object of reducing costs and increasing plant efficiency.These modifications are dealt with under the section headings and are therefore not necessarily in chronological order.CRUSHING SECTIONThere has been no material alteration in this section although at the time of writing a 650 ton capacity ore bin is being erected ahead of the primary Jaques crusher. In recent years it has been more and more recognised that applied geology can be of service to the mining industry, and many mining companies overseas now have permanent geological staff as part of the operating organisation.Most of these companies insist that the geological department must pay for itself by the savings it can make in operating cost, and the growing use of the geologist is proof that such savings are made.The geological problems in every district are different, and a description of the problems and method of attack in a specified district is a useful addition to the literature of mining geology. Very few contributions, from the standpoint of the mining company geologist, have appeared in the Australian literature so that, although the operations of Bendigo Mines Limited are still in the development stage, and its geological work newly established, a description of the routine geological work at Bendigo should beof interest.Although most Bendigo mining companies have not employed permanent geologists, they have utilised geological guidance wherever possible, and a great body of data has grown up. Acknowledgment is made here to the valuable work of the Geological Survey of Victoria, especially the writings of E. J. Dunn, H. Herman, and H. S. Whitelaw, and the maps of Caleb Thomas and H. S. Ground conditions at the Kencana mine, Indonesia, are generally poor and an underhand cut and fill mining method is used for extraction. Due to these poor ground conditions, all vertical development has been conducted using blind, top-down, sink and line excavation methods. Due to time constraints, raiseboring was considered the only viable excavation method for the installation of a return ventilation system for the K2 (Kencana extension) project. In order to achieve successful raiseboring in the poor ground conditions a number of strategies were used including: a detailed geotechnical study for optimal position of the shaft/s, splitting shaft excavation vertically, raiseboring of multiple smaller diameter shafts, extensive pregrouting, installation of drainage holes, and rapid installation of support following excavation.

Seafield ResourcesÆ offshore placer gold project covers c.10 000 km2 of the Westland continental shelf between Karamea and Jacksons Head, from the low-water mark out to the 120 m isobath (Figure 1). De Beers Marine (DBM), the marine diamond subsidiary of the De Beers Group, will carry out the project with geological input from Placer Solutions (PSL). DBM bring a wealth of expertise and advanced technology to the project, developed during their 20 years of exploration and mining of diamond placers on the Atlantic shelf of southern Africa, where they have also maintained a strong environmental record.   Glaciers and high-energy rivers emanating from the Southern Alps have transported substantial quantities of gold bearing sediment onto the Westland continental shelf during Pleistocene glacial periods, when fluvial gradients are steeper, sea level is c.120 m lower and most of the shelf is exposed. These deposits have been extensively reworked by the advancing shoreline and marine processes during interglacial marine transgressions, and most are now buried beneath a variable thickness of post-glacial marine sand, silt and mud. DBM will use side-scan sonar, swath bathymetry, Chirp sub-bottom profiling and a magnetometer to map the sea floor and sediments beneath it, guided by PSLÆs predictive geological model for gold distribution on the shelf. Cactus grab and vibro-core samples will be used to ground-truth the geophysics and provide stratigraphic, sedimentological and gold distribution data for incorporation into the geological model. Areas of interest identified by the geophysical and sampling data will be investigated in more detail, with closer-spaced geophysics and Mega-drill sampling to a maximum sediment depth of 20 m beneath the sea floor. These samples will be raised to the ship with air-lift suction technology, processed onboard for mineralogical and grade information, then returned to the sea floor. Environmental baseline data will be gathered from Van Veen grab samples of seabed sediment taken throughout the area during the prospecting programme.

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. The concentration of Mt. Morgan sulphide ore has always been attended by serious loss of gold. Until recently, with a simple selective flotation flowsheet, even the lowest grade of ore milled-about 2 dwt. per long ton-thislloss was 0·9 dwt., whilst for average to high-grade ore, 3·5 to 5 dwt., the figure was 1·5 to 2·0 dwt. Early in 1937 it was decided to equip the research laboratory for an investigation into the condition and location of the escaping gold and the physical and mineralogical barriers preventing its recovery.With the completion of: this equipment in July 1937, trial and error testing, which had been explored to exhaustion, was abandoned and a five months' research programme mapped out and commenced. Based on the knowledge so gained, a flowsheet combining primary desliming, bulk flotation of the natural slime, selective flotation of the deslimed fraction, and cyanidation of the selective flotation tailing was drafted and tried with encouraging results in a 70-lb. per hour pilot plant. This flowsheet, modified to meet current circumstances, is being dove-tailed into the existing 1,500-ton sulphide ore concentrator, though the cyanidation treatment is actually carried out in the oxidized ore mill, to which the flotation tails are pumped.RESEARCH EQUIPMENT(1) Five tube elutriator (Fig. 1) t built in the company's workshop.

Froth flotation is applied to mineral sand concentrates in order to produce commercially viable xenotime concentrates. Experiments indicate that a xenotime product containing 38% Y2O3 at 47% recovery or 34% Y2O3 at 83% recovery can be obtained from a 27% Y2O3 feed. The process involves a primary stage of reverse flotation at which oxide and silicate gangue is floated, and secondary stage of direct flotation at which xenotime is floated. Of the various collectors screened an amphoteric compound was found to be effective at both stages. This was made possible by the addition of sodium silicate at the second stage, which acted as depressant for the remainder of the gangue. Similar studies on a low grade feed material were somewhat unsatisfactory as the grade achieved fell short of what was targeted.

Well designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimising truck haulage on-road hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. However, practically designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often diff cult to achieve. Poorly designed and built roads exhibit high rolling resistance - a one per cent increase in road rolling resistance can typically reduce speed on ramp by as much as ten per cent - and on the f at by up to 26 per cent. In the current economic climates, investment and operating decisions come under scrutiny. In the long run, this scrutiny returns improved efficiencies and leaner, healthier operations. The focus of this evolving evaluation process should and will certainly fall on haulage operations - simply by virtue of their contribution to overall cost of operations - often in excess of 50 per cent of total costs for deep open-pit mines. Whilst the end result - improved efficiency and reduced cost per ton hauled - is not in itself problematic, it is the route, or process followed to achieve these savings that needs to be carefully managed. We can be guided on this journey by our understanding of how a road is designed, and, critically, the interplay between a good design and safe, cost efficient haulage.This paper brief y summarises the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for more safe and efficient haulage systems, and the truck manufacturers' requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. These developments have been paralleled by the need to minimise haulage hazards, both from a health and safety perspective. Generally, both objectives have been achieved, but with some specific areas of design and operation still presenting ongoing potential health and safety hazards.The paper then summarises current design guidelines for these safety-critical issues, both from a road-design 'best-practice' and road management perspectives. Implementation of the approach is seen as a basis for reducing the potential of an under-designed mine road to lead to health and safety defects and secondly as a means of giving haul road safety and performance issues greater prominence in the minds of the road-user, operator, mine planner and designer alike.

In the course of the last twenty eight years the copper lodes of New Caledonia have been periodically worked or abandoned, until quite recently, probably attracted by the higher price of the metal, British capital has again been induced to embark upon the further development of several copper properties, which at present give reasonable promise of becoming regular producers. Owing to its proximity to Australia (only a three day's journey by mail steamer from Sydney) New Caledonia becomes of additional interest to Australian commerce in general, and it is to be hoped that the French Government may see their way before long to make the best of this natural position, to the mutual benefit of both countries concerned.Op till now all copper ores and concentrates which have been shipped from New Caledonia, were treated in Australian smelting works furthermore, Australian mine managers and miners have from time to time been connected with New Caledonian mining ventures, but, unfortunately, it must be said that nearly everyone of them returned to Australia thoroughly disgusted with his experience over there. Even to the casual observer, it is not so very difficult to find a proper explanation for these shortcomings in the peculiar economic conditions of the 'French colony, as many of the objections which have hitherto existed in connection with mining operations, were the direct consequences of a system of colonisation which could not possibly have been productive of better results.

In the context of sustainable development, the Minerals Council of Australia (2010) states that 'investments in minerals projects should be financially profitable, technically appropriate, environmentally sound and socially responsible'. In other words, the business of mining can only be sustained if these criteria are met.   Science and technology plays a major role in all four of these criteria. This paper will present the technology and innovation emerging from the Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship which brings together CSIRO and more than ten of Australia's leading universities to work with industry to drive efficiency, productivity and environmental performance. This work is required if the Australian minerals sector is to thrive and continue to deliver national benefit in the face of increased global competition, declining ore grades, depleting ore deposits, increasingly constrained national resources (land, energy, water and people) and changing societal expectations.   Science and technology to reduce emissions and water use, discover greenfields resources, enable deeper mining operations and transform mineral processing are described. Technology is presented as an enabler of sustainability: a means to this end but not as an end in its own right.

A thermochemical model is developed to study the two-stage smelting reduction process for ironmaking without post-combustion. Steady-state multi-material and heat balance equations are solved simultaneously to study the effect of metallisation, slag basicity, coal rank and heat loss on consumption rates of coal, ore, flux and oxygen and production rate of slag to produce hot metal of a given composition, tapped at a given temperature. The model is applied to the commercial data for a COREX-plant producing a wide range of hot metal compositions, tapped at different temperatures. The computed rates of coal, slag, flux, ore and oxygen were found to be close to the reported ones, but an exact match could not be obtained. It is found that a four per cent change in metallisation brings changes the coal rate by five per cent, flux rate by six per cent, slag rate by eight per cent and oxygen rate by 13 per cent, while a ten per cent change in basicity changes the coal rate by ten per cent, flux rate by 13 per cent and oxygen rate by 22 per cent. Further, it is found that an increase in metallisation decreases the coal rate and export gas. At a given per cent metallisation, the coal rate and the export gas are lowest for anthracite compared to all other types of coal.

The Hilton and George Fisher deposits occur 22 and 24 km north of Mount Isa, NW Qld, Australia respectively. Both deposits occur as deformed Proterozoic, sediment hosted, stratiform orebodies hosting Pb-Zn-Ag (Hilton) and Zn-Pb-Ag (George Fisher) mineralisation. The two deposits are separated by approximately 2 km of strongly faulted barren shales, mudstones and siltstones along strike. Despite this, correlations between the Hilton and George Fisher deposits have previously been assumed on the basis of textural, lithological and geochemical similarities, but previously lacked specific details to prove exact stratigraphic matches.Feasibility drilling allowed broad correlations based on the position of siltstone pillars separating individual orebodies. However the position of continuous potassium-rich, siliceous and cross-fractured tuffaceous marker beds (TMBs) often used as stratigraphic markers within the Hilton Mine were initially unrecognised within the George Fisher stratigraphy where they are erratically silicified and often not cross-fractured resulting in correlations being difficult to prove. As a more detailed knowledge of TMB locations at George Fisher was gained it was possible to look for corresponding TMBs within the Hilton orebodies. Recent underground stope definition drilling at the two locations enabled specific TMBs, stratigraphic units and even individual sedimentary beds to be matched between the two locations, despite the large separation between mines.The correlation between the two deposits has implications for future exploration drilling north of George Fisher. If a specific stratigraphic horizon can be determined within one hole, positioning of further drillholes can be more accurately planned. The significance of having stratigraphic matches between Hilton and George Fisher also has implications for correlations with other Isa Valley deposits. Convincing preliminary TM and stratigraphic correlations have already been made between George Fisher and the Isa Lead Mine 24 km to the south.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. Two small coral islands in the Pacific Ocean, situated close under the equator, and formerly classed among the Line Islands, have, during the last three or four years risen into prominence owing to the valuable deposits of phosphate of lime discovered on them.The deposits of Ocean and Pleasant Islands are under the control of the Pacific Islands Company (1902) Limited, of London and, Sydney, and the high grade of the phosphate, together with the exceptionally favourable facilities for mining this mineral, of which there are several millions of tons on these islands, give this company advantages which enable them to command the Australian and New Zealand markets, and also to make large contracts with Japan and other countries. Both islands, as far as surface indications are concerned, are entirely constructed of coral, with phosphate on the top from the highest points to the present sea level, there being no sign of volcanic rocks, with the exception of a few pieces of drift pumice on the coast.Banaba (Paanopa according to. the Admiralty charts), also known as Ocean Island, was discovered in 1804.
