Mill scale, which contains a high proportion of magnetite and wustite, was added to the feed to the Whyalla grate kiln pellet plant during the production of acid pellets for domestic consumption. Its addition resulted in increased production -rates together with reduced consumptions of bentonite, fireclay and fuel. Mill scale was particularly beneficial when treating feed containing difficult to process, earthy, high ignition loss iron ores. Test work in the laboratory and subsequent plant experience showed that the magnetite and wustite oxidised in the drying and preheat sections of the travelling grate. The additional heat reduced gas flows through the grate kiln system, aided the drying of green balls containing earthy ores and increased the preheat strength of the balls. These advantages were offset to some extent by higher power consumptions to grind the harder mill scale and process difficulties caused by the contamination of mill scale with oil and coke.

Consideration was given to the.applicab on of a solvent extraction circuit to be'included in the process'for the-recovery of a high grade product from.:-the Rum Jungle Creek.South uranium ore body.The economics of two alternative processes, firstly the Eluex process which uses an ion exchange process followed by solvent extraction.-of a.high grade sulphuric acid eluate, and secondly a process using direct solvent' extractioh of pregnant leach liquor, were studied. There was a small cost advantage favouring the Eluex process but when other factors were considered, the installation of a direct solvent extraction process appeared the better long term investment. A solvent extraction plant was installed at Rum Jungle in 1962.

Oxy-ACETYLENE system of welding and cutting is at present practised in two forms, which may be described as the high and lowpressure systems. In the high-pressure system the two gases, oxygen and acetylene, are delivered. to the blow-pipe under pressure from properly constructed trade cylinders. Oxygen cylinders are in two sizes, each containing 100 and 200 cub. ft. of gas respectively. These cylinders are charged to a pressure of 120 atmospheres, or 1800 lb. per sq. in. approximately. The acetylene cylinders are made in one size as far as the writer knows, and contain 200 cub. ft. of acetylene gas at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. Each cylinder is provided with a valve and connection for attaching a regulator to "break down" the high pressure in the cylinders to the necessary low working pressure of the blow-pipes, and to deliver the two gases at a constant pressure irrespective of the variable pressures in the cylinders. These regulators can be adjusted down to as low as 1 lb. and are provided with two pressure gaugesone reading the contents of the cylinder in atmospheres, and the other the working pressure in lb. per sq. in. The high-pressure, or "two cylinder" system is compact and can readily be transported from place to place in the works. For this purpose the two cylinders are mounted on an easy-running 4-wheeled truck, which the operator and assistant find no difficulty in manipulating. In the low-pressure system the two gases are delivered to the blow-pipe, one from the oxygen cylinder and the other from the acetylene gas generating plant, which consists of the following:Generating cylinder, half filled with water, into which the cathoide is plunged. The water pollution hazard posed by the derelict Conrad mine site, to the water and associated stream sediment of Borah and Maids Creeks and the nearby Copeton Dam storage, has been assessed. Mine water, tailings and tailings dump leachate have polluted water and stream sediments in Borah Creek downstream of the mine site. Acidity, arsenic, copper, lead, iron, silver and zinc are the principal pollutants. Under dry and low flow conditions, mine water was found to be the dominant polluting source, however, leachate and run-off from tailings dumps were also significant under and following wet conditions. Soluble arsenic, lead, iron and silver species in mine water and leachate were found to be rapidly incorporated into sediments, but acidity, copper, and zinc persisted in the creek water. Under low flow conditions, the water of Maids Creek is polluted with copper and zinc (up to 4.4 and 34 mg/l for copper and zinc respectively) and the pH is decreased (from pH 5 - 7 to pH 3 - 6) by entry of Borah Creek water. Values found in Maids Creek were variable and related to flow regime and distance downstream from Borah Creek confluence. Water in Copeton Dam storage, having a much larger volume of water with a higher bicarbonate buffering capacity (50mg/l versus 15mg/1), is not affected by entry of Maids Creek water. Polluted sediment from Borah Creek has contaminated Maids Creek for 2km downstream to Copeton Dam storage. Stream sediment downstream of the Borah Creek confluence, contains up to 1.0% As and 1.4% Pb in the less than 200 micron size fraction. Under high flow conditions, arsenic was found to be moved out from the mine site as insoluble species, associated with suspended sediment in Run-off.

The dispersion pattern of heavy metals in soil and water is a consequence of complex geophysical and geochemical processes. Metal release from mining sites and subsequent migration occur primarily through acid mine drainage and erosion of waste and tailings dumps. Water plays a significant role in heavy metal mobilisation. Whilst it acts as a storage buffer for the pollutants, it is also the medium in which most of the reactions take place, and is undoubtedly the most significant transport vector in the pollution process. The intrinsic properties of the acidic drainage such as chemical composition, speciation of key mineral components, redox potential and pH are master variables controlling metal release, transport, deposition, reactivity and availability to biota. The mobility of heavy metals is strongly increased by acidification from acid mine drainage, and the discharge of these metals into the receiving waters results in numerous physical, chemical and biological responses in which the environment can affect the metal and vice versa. The result is an overwhelming number of association/dissociation, substitution, adsorption/desorption reactions, giving rise to a complex migration pattern. The attempt to understand and describe the dispersion pattern of heavy metals is complicated by the nature and level of interaction between the geochemical and hydrodynamic processes that generate and control the movement of the pollutants in the geosphere. Transport models which can be used to predict the behaviour of metal pollutants in a natural environment are still in the initial phases of development and their application to real life situations is limited. The Biochemical Cycle adds another dimension to the mobility of heavy metals. Metals form an important component of the food chain for man and plants. Biological uptake of metals from the bedrock and soil by organisms can result in migration paths very difficult to follow. Biodegradation or assimilation is just a tip of the iceberg.

The mechanism of flotation of potash ores with long chain primary amines has been assessed. Since at high electrolyte concentration in saturated brine the electrical double layers of the interacting particles and bubbles are entirely compressed, the induction time measurements confirmed the elimination of kinetic factors associated with the energy barriers opposing particle-to-bubble attachment under such conditions as could be expected. The lack of the kinetic hindrance resulted in the correlation found between the contact angles on the KCl surfaces and the sylvite flotation measured under the same physico-chemical conditions. The iep values and acid numbers obtained for various Esso oils tested as extenders in the flotation of coarse potash ore fractions confirmed the base oils with high content of nitrogen-bearing compounds to be good extender oils. The performance of such oils could further be improved by dissolving in them a small amount of long-chain aliphatic amine.

During the past eight years a vigorous drilling campaign resulted in large increases in the reserves of both copper and silver-lead-zinc ores.As a result the Company initiated an increased production programme.Some major capital works have been completed, others are in progress and more are needed to achieve the proposed daily throughput of 14,400 tons. The increased ore potential justified a copper refinery which has been constructed at Townsville. The increased production rate achieved to date, combined with improved techniques and greater mechanization, is assisting the Company to combat the general inflationary trends caused by increased costs for labour and materials.INTRODUCTION"Today we are armed with better weapons in our fight for lowered costs and greater efficiency, but we must not flag in our efforts to improve." Such was the resolution expressed by Mr. K. B. Gross, then General Manager of the Company, in his review lecture delivered to the First Ordinary Meeting of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy at Mount Isa on 18th August, 1952. This present review of the period 1952 to 1960 records our efforts to fulfil this resolution. At the th:ne of Mr. Gross's statement,copper production was commencing in earnest. Although the importance of Mount Isa's copper orebodies was well recognized, the major discoveries which led to Mount Isa's emergence as Australia's premier copper mining and smelting operation were not known. Highwall mining is a specialised and largely automated mining method developed in the United States for the extraction of coal left under a shallow overburden cover after cessation of economical open cut mining operations. As the name indicates, coal is extracted from the seam exposed along a highwall by a remotely controlled continuous miner operating in a single unsupported opening and brought to the surface by a string of conveyor segments. The single entries are separated by coal .pillars and driven normal to the highwall, over areas where the thickness of cover and volume of recoverable coal is insufficient to allow or justify conventional underground mining. An additional highwall mining method is augering. The success of high wall mining operations depends significantly on geological features, notably the stability of the working roof, determined by the type and mechanical properties of the immediate roof strata. Stability of the ribs, absence of floor heave, faults and dykes are further important prerequisites for profitable highwall mining. The geometric relationship between the spatial attitudes of existing joint systems, the direction (azimuth) of the single entry opening and its vertical profile determine the unimpeded depth of penetration into the coal and thus its economic success. The mechanical implications of the lithological transition zone from a coal seam to either primary or original roof strata, compared to an interface between the coal seam and overlying strata, characterised by a sharp erosional boundary between coal and a secondary immediate roof stratum, are very significant. The compatibility between the response to mining by the geological system (floor-seam-roof) and the capability of the mining equipment to prevent the development of instability are essential requirements from a mechanical viewpoint. The minimisation of vibrations, very good horizon control, an ability to vary the profile of the opening, and the maintenance of consistently high advance and retreat rates, are also important aspects of profitable highwall mining.

It is my pleasure to deliver the first Keynote Address to the first joint conference between The Australasian Institute of Mining and- Metallurgy and The American Institute of Mining, Metallur- gical and Petroleum Engineers. I am particularly pleased to be participating in this first joint meet- ing as I have been a member of one Institute for 41 years and the other for 35 years. An examination of the membership of both Institutes confirms the fact that the mineral in- dustry is an international one. This has long been the case and basically stems from the occurrence of mineral resources in most countries of the world. It is therefore fitting that these two 'Inter- national Institutes', representing the professions involved in the mineral industry, should choose `International Resource Management' as the theme of the first joint conference. The topic of this Keynote Address is `The mineral equation' or the counterbalancing supply and demand items and the factors affecting them. I propose to attempt to present the overall picture of the mineral equation as subsequent papers and sessions will deal with specific items in more detail. My thesis is broad and deceptively simple; it is that the continued existence and growth of world material civilization depends, in large measure, on the continued use and further dis- covery of world mineral resources. Material civili- zation is used as a broad term to include the pro- duction of man's shelter and tools together with the production of the `consumer' goods and ser- vices needed by society. First let us spend a few minutes looking at the development of material civilization.

Gold mineralization belt of eastern China in the adjacent part of the northwestern Pacific rim is orientated NE to NNE and as-sociated with Mesozoic faults and igneous intrusives and Mesozoic to Cenozoic volcanism and subvolcanism extending more than 3000 km in length and 300 to 800 kni in width affected by the movement from the Pacific Plate subducted against the Asian Plate.The relative movement between the Pacific and the Asian plates give rise to two types of fracture zones, the tensional ones providing the space for the formation of fissure-filling type of auriferous quartz veins and the shear zones providing the space for the formation of hydrothermal replacement type of gold de-posits in Shandong Peninsula. The fissure filling type of quartz vein, is represented by Linglong gold deposit which is hosted in Mesozoic Linglong Granite and consists of hundreds of quartz veins filling fractures trending NE to NNE and the hydrothermal replacement type is represented by Sanshandao gold deposit which is hosted in crushed and hydrothermally altered Mesozoic Linglong Granite in contact with Archaean metamorphic complex of Jiaodong Group along a Mesozoic upthust fault zone trending NE.

This paper explains why the valuation of mining assets is often a very different exercise from the valuation of the shares in the mining company which owns those assets. The fundamental reason for this is that mining assets, and the shares of the company which owns those assets have different risks. In order to properly value mining securities it is essential to: ò ensure all the different risks and other factors which impact on the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares are taken into account; and determine the extent to which the different risks and other factors are addressed in the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares so as to avoid double counting or not counting at all. If the alternative, but far from consensus, view is accepted that the correct valuation methodology to apply to shares in mining companies should be based on option pricing theory then conventional valuation practice of both mining assets and shares in mining companies will need to be fundamentally reassessed.

There have been few long-term studies of sulphide oxidation under controlled conditions. The object of this study was to investigate the oxidation and leaching characteristics of pyritic mine material under conditions that were commensurate with field conditions but which could be controlled and monitored on a long term basis. The test material - overburden from Woodlawn Mines Pty Ltd - was packed into a 300 cm high column and leached with water at an infiltration rate of 256 mm y-1 for 5 years. Chemical conditions within the column were continuously monitored by sensors embedded in the overburden and leachate from the base of the column was analysed weekly. The study examined the relationships between heavy metal release and gas, moisture, and chemical conditions in the column.

Following a long period of increase, there has been a reduction in exploration expenditure and activity in Australia over the past two years. During the post Second World War period, exploration was largely driven by mining companies seeking resources to satisfy an increase in world demand, while increasing their asset base as a result of mineral discoveries. In general, return on investment to shareholders was not the major driving force. With the exception of gold the mining industry has been faced with a long-term fall of metal prices in real terms. As a result the net profit return on average shareholderÆs funds in the Australian minerals industry has fallen from over 20 per cent in 1990 to less than five per cent today. Mining is now competing for funds with communication and finance based industries yielding high returns on shareholder investment. Shareholders and superannuation fund managers seeking a high return on short-term investments have indirectly reduced the funds available to the mining industry. Globalisation of the mining industry is leading to the rationalisation of the Australian mining industry as witnessed by mergers and acquisitions of local companies by foreign investors. The return on capital invested in the Australian mineral exploration industry must improve if the industry is to be competitive on a worldwide basis. Failure to achieve this will result in capital flowing overseas or to other industries. Relatively short-term upswings in metal prices which are generally driven by threats to the supply base (eg strikes, mine closures, increases in country risk) often lead to increased capital raisings for exploration funding. As a consequence of the time taken to raise the capital and increase exploration activity, measured exploration activity lags the metal price increases. There are also lags between commencement of exploration and discovery and ore production. In the case of gold exploration expenditure peaked six years after the price rise of 1980 Companies persevering with exploration in the current difficult period will be rewarded because they will be able to capitalise on future metal price rises and a minimised time lag.

Three ores (sulfidic, oxidized and carbonaceous) were analyzed to determine the effects of leaching time, ore depth, and ore mineralogy on cyanide species concentration. NaCN solutions were percolated through opaque columns filled with milled ore. Column design made liquid sample collection possible from various depths at specific times. The concentrations of weak acid dissociable(WAD) and total cyanide, Fe(CN)63 , Fe(CN)64 , SCN , and Cu(CN)43 were determined for each sample. Extended percolation time led to increases in WAD cyanide concentra- tions and decreased SCN and Cu(CN)43 concentrations regardless of ore depth. WAD cyanide concentration decreased while Fe(CN)64 concentra- tion increased with ore depth. Highest concentrations of Fe(CN)64- SCN and Cu(CN)43 were found in the sulfidic ore, with expected low WAD cyanide concentrations. With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors-include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other i changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

For a blast to be successful both heave and fragmentation must be satisfactory. Amongst the major factors influencing blasting are rock properties. This paper considers the effect of rock density on fragmentation and heave and how better results can be achieved in dense ore. Patterns which increase the heave and give better fragmentation are examined and the application of theory to the blasting of the Dales Gorge Haematite, density 4.2 - 4.5 t.m.,3 is then discussed. The drilling of staggered patterns instead of square patterns and a shallower 'V' initiation system has given better heave and fragmentation. This practice has re- duced backbreak and improved toe conditions; these factors have resulted in increased load ing rates. There has been an increase in the lump/fine ratio which is consistent with the theory although other factors such as ground conditions could have contributed.

Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (-4 Ma) on Ponza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (-500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.

Corporate governance has never been more topical. A glance at any major newspaper or business publication will reveal a litany of corporate failures based upon the governance of the organisations involved (eg Byrne, 2002; Hayes, 2002; The Economist, 2002). The increased compliance requirements and speculative nature of our industry means that corporate governance systems are, if anything, more important than in the general business community (Arthur, 2001). Rather than focus exclusively on the contribution of governance to corporate failure within the mining industry, however, our objective in this paper is to examine how boards can add value to the corporations that they govern. In order to highlight how a board can add value to a company, we commence by outlining the role of the board in the modern corporation in general and the mining industry in particular. We then introduce the concept of shareholder value and identify the steps on which a board needs to focus to enhance shareholder value through value tracking processes. Our discussion pays particular attention to the importance of organisational culture to the companyÆs activities and utilises three case studies from the mining industry. We conclude with an overview of what mining boards can do to enhance their culture and drive performance changes for the benefit of the companies they govern.

Early efforts to control the dust necessarily produced during dry crushing operations, took the form of venturis at loading chutes and other places where dust was most evident. These venturis discharged to the atmosphere and for obvious reasons were not very satisfactory.Attempts to collect the dust drawn off by the venturis, using dry cyclones, were not successful, the cyclones catching only the coarser particles. Further, no satisfactory method of continuously discharging the dust catchment was evolved. Water sprays were also used, and will be referred to later.In 1940, a single discharge fan of 3,000-4,000 cu. ft. per minute capacity, was installed to draw the dust-laden air from the Symons crushers and ·screening sections with their attendant conveyors. Suction was through two 15 in. ducts which branched off into 10 off-takes situated over the conveyers at points of discharge from crushers and screens.A dry cyclone was installed in front of the fan, which exhausted into a bag-house.The cyclone suffered from the defects of the smaller units mentioned earlier. When the collected dust reached a certain level in the cone, no more collection would take place until the cone was emptied. This objectionable feature was overcome by introducing a jet of water ahead of the cyclone. The water and dust collected overflowed a weir and were pumped to the mill.

The cultural ages of man have been defined in terms of smelting and hence as a prerequisite, mining for example the iron age and the bronze age. There could be no separation of the man from his role as the technologist (miner/ smelter) for his early metal working efforts were to enhance survival. In the millenniums since, the artisan specialist developed and the technologist emerged. The process is a sort of technical natural selection. From the generalist hunter, gatherer, miner, metalworker we advanced over the centuries with great 'steps for mankind' to the series of specialists each largely intent on securing his/her technical functions from the curious assaults of other tribal members. The relevance of all this to the theme, 'Past, present and future of the Victorian mining and metallurgical industries', is simply that people have always, and will always, be the moving force in our industries. It is the effectiveness of people now and in the future that this paper addresses.
