A novel approach is suggested for the solution of planning and development problems in the coal, mining industry. The formation of coal measures depends to a significant extent on sequential geological processes and events which are probably best defined in a "system of processes and responses." The great number of variables in such a system is a characteristic feature of geological environments. Research work over the past two decades, in particular, has successfully established analytical procedures for the identification and definition of relevant and irrelevant variables for mining developments in specific geological situations. Such situations are typifiable within the regional geological setting of coal deposits. Scale gaps can be bridged by reliance on common symmetrical attributes and pervasive geometric features. Depositional processes and their resulting attributes are responsible for the development of mechanically significant rockmass "defects" and anisotropies; such features have to be identified and assessed for the selection of colliery design criteria. It is suggested that the procedural frame- work of systems engineering analysis is a most appropriate tool for the assessment of those geological features that can influence the mechanical behaviour of the "floor-seam-roof" system in "high technology" mining operations of the future. Techniques appropriate to petrographic image analysis are being developed using digitized backscatter electron images of well characterized mineral assemblages obtained from a Cameca scanning electron microprobe. Emphasis is on developing descriptors for size, shape and association of mineral grains as these all convey important information concerning the nature of rocks and the processes that have operated upon them. Processes, for example, that could indicate the proximity of mineralization. For convenience, the work is being carried out on the PDP11/73 host computer of the electron micropt be, although it is recongnized that such a multi-user environment is not appropriate for practical image analysis. The eventual aim is to develop a low-cost microcomputer-based package for quantitative description of mineral textures and rock fabrics as an objective aid to the petrographic analysis of ores and host rocks.

It has also been given impetus by recent trends for quality certification of manufacturing inputs, specifically the AS3900 and IS09000 series of standards.

Sintering of lead and zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to provide both desuiphurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulphur dioxide gas for sulphuric acid manufacture. From November, 1969 a 20 percent increase in production rate has been obtained through improvements in operating technique. A gradual increase in bed permeability was achieved by modifications to the feed mix conditioning equipment and by improving moisture control. However advantage could not be taken of the higher permeability to increase sulphur elimination because the hardness of the lump sinter decreased. Higher throughput, better quality sinter and more stable sintering conditions were however made possible by simultaneously: 1. reducing segregation and compaction in the sinter bed, by narrowing the discharge opening of the main layer feed hopper, 2. reducing the sizing of sinter returns to give a closer size spectrum of particles in the feed mix, and 3. increasing the sulphide sulphur content of the feed mix to give higher bed Temperatures.

The basic rule for correct design of a sample plant is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. However, this rule is often ignored in the design of sample plants to save capital costs. This is false economy, because the samples taken are likely to be seriously biased and the precision may be compromised. The introduction of bias is particularly serious, because no amount of replicate sampling and analysis will reduce bias once it is present and it is often quite difficult and expensive to subsequently rectify the problem due to space limitations around the primary sampling location. This is also true of secondary and tertiary sampling stages, particularly in terms of the relationship between particle size and retained sample mass. The best strategy is to seek expert sampling advice and design the sample plant correctly at the outset.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM tunnelling twin light rail tunnels through cohesive soils and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a listed historic building on shallow foundations as well as modern buildings on deep foundations; one major office block was actually constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design process. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, tunnel design and the technical basis for excavation support and tunnelling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed. Project construction has now commenced and a brief summary of progress to date is included in this paper; this will be updated for the presentation to be made in Melbourne.

Hindustan Zinc Limited has successfully installed an In-Stream Analysis and Process Control System in the flotation section of the Balaria Lead-Zinc concentrator at Zawar Mines. The system comprises In-Stream Analysis to continuously monitor lead and zinc levels in feed, concentrates and tailings streams, field instrumentation for reagent distribution and flotation cell level control linked to a central Distributed Control System for supervisory control functions. An intensive training scheme was conducted by the system supplier for concentrator metallurgical and instrumentation engineers. Since commissioning of the system in April 1989, Hindustan Zinc has enjoyed the benefits of improved lead, zinc and silver recoveries, improved concentrate grade control and reduced reagent costs.

This paper describes some experiences in the design of flotation reagent schemes for the efficient flotation of complex gold ores containing free gold and/or gold associated with easily flotable sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite and bornite. Historically, the design of gold flotation reagent schemes has been based primarily on experiences using high dosage levels of water soluble charged collectors such as xanthates and dithiophosphates and carefully controlled regions of pH. This approach has been effective with gold associated with complex sulphide minerals, in particular gold associated with iron sulphides such as pyrite. An alternative two-stage reagent approach is presented that is applicable to certain types of gold ores. This approach involves using very small dosages of uncharged water insoluble collectors at natural ore pH followed by a modified bulk flotation reagent approach for the second stage. The reasons for utilising this approach, when applicable, are discussed and illustrated with examples.

Some better perspectives applying to the exploitation and dressing of polymetallic ores in the Banskfa. gtiavnica-Hod- rusea Ore District are supposed to be achieved after a suc- cessful investigation and proving there the existence of deep-seated mineralization as well as due to increasing de- mand for non-ferrous metals and consequently to higher mar- ket prices of those recently noticed. With respect to the present situation in mining and to the further technical development as well, a several times higher exploitation may be in this region expected, especially in the deeper .eated parts of the deposit. When solving the tasks of a complex economic exploitation over the whole region, consi- derable attention is paid to regional relations and impact studies (due to expected exploitation and ore dressing but also to very difficult problems of dewatering (drainage pro- blems-). It will be first of all necessary to find there an equilibrium between the consequences resulting from the re- naissance of mining industry and environmental requests un- dispensable for the city of Banska 9tiavnica and the other neighbouring towns in the vicinity of mining plants.

An efficient filtration plant can be designed only from an adequate knowledge of the filtration characteristics of the material to be handled; if these characteristics can be expressed in the form of an equation the work of design is simplified immensely. The literature of the subject contains numerous equations which have been developed by various workers to express their results, usually obtained from a 'Very limited class of material, and from moderately thick pulps. Such expressions have been found quite unsuited for use in the case of thin, very free filtering pulps.In 1926, Underwood put forward an equation having a general for m, and which, he was able to show, provided a satisfactory expression of the data obtained and published by a large number of earlier workers. This equation has been found a very satisfactory and useful tool for the study of a variety of filtration problems. Excavation in underground jointed rock masses creates cavities into which the surrounding rock mass deforms. Deformations, besides intact rock deformation, include mechanistic deformations such as slip and rotation. In this paper deformational moduli were measured for prototype and blocky (jointed) models using elastic analogue methods for stopes from MIM LimitedÆs Lead Mine. The blocks for the models were defined in terms of the prototypeÆs joint sets, their spatial separations, orientations and average friction characteristics. From dimensional analyses, a relationship between prototype and model deformations was used to predict stope mid-span deformations. The results of this physical modelling work, conducted in the 1970s, motivated an investigation into the electro-treatment of tailings backfill to achieve improved strength and stiffness characteristics. Tailings backfill containing fines and having a high clay content can be electrically dewatered, and at times grouted, cemented, ion exchanged or agglutinated, to achieve relatively high magnitudes of strength and stiffness. These treated tailings stiffnesses can reduce the deformation magnitudes within a rock mass and, in doing so, reduce problems encountered in mine pillar extraction. The application of these tailings modification techniques is examined in relation to the elastic analogue methods.

This paper addresses project commissioning, that is, activities that culminate in the transfer of a project from the construction phase to routine plant operation. These activities should be initiated early in the engineering and design phase to ensure that the plant design is operator friendly and that construction is scheduled such that pre-operational testing and hand over to the owner occurs in a timely and cost-effective manner. For the purposes of this paper, commissioning includes all activities related to pre-operational testing, no-load testing, water commissioning, and ore commissioning. That is, all activities from construction completion to practical completion of the prime contract. This process is facilitated in numerous ways dependent on the nature of the project prime contract and the size of the project. For small lump sum projects, the contractor's responsibility may include all phases of commissioning to practical completion, whereas, a managing contractor on a complex multi-contract project may only be required to bring the project to mechanical completion and hand over to the owner for ore commissioning. According to our experimental results, the following oxygen probe recommended, that is, the magnesia stabilized zirconia was employed as a solid electrolyte and Fe.FexO solid elect- rode was used as a reference electrode. Using such an oxygen probe, we tried to measure the oxygen potentials in molten metals, mattes and gases in the following fields of non-ferrous metal industry, molten copper in the side launder before casting, molten crude lead in the forehearth of ISP blast furnace, molten copper mattes in the forehearth of blast furnace and in the settler of flash smelting furnace, gas in the settler of copper flash smelting furnace and flue gas in the electric furnace for ferro-silicon. In the past ten years or so, many experi- mental results in the field of fundamental studies have confirmed that the equilibrium oxygen potential could be measured conveniently and accurately by an electrochemical method using a zirconia solid electrolyte. Recently, such an electrochemical technique has been also applied to a device for physicochemical invest- igation or process control in the non-ferrous metal industry. Such a device consists of an oxygen con- centration cell with stabilized zirconia, and it is commonly called an "oxygen probe" or "oxygen sensor".

Aquatic macroinvertebrates have been used as a monitoring tool for many years. They are ubiquitous and occupy a central role in the ecology of rivers. They are a key link in the aquatic food chain, forming a pathway between primary producers (such as algae and macrophytes) and predators (such as fish, platypus and birds), and some are sensitive to flow conditions, water quality and habitat condition. They are not very mobile and are good indicators of local impacts. As most aquatic macroinvertebrates are benthic, they are better able to integrate effects of changes in water quality, and habitat condition and structure. Their diversity is crucial to the maintenance of a balanced, functioning and healthy river ecosystem. Thus, data on benthic macroinvertebrate community structures can be used for predicting potential impact, assessing the extent of damage and for gauging recovery from damage. Over the past eight years, State agencies throughout Australia, through the National River Health Program have developed models (AusRivAS) to assess river health using macroinvertebrate communities. The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines has sampled both macroinvertebrates and water quality throughout Queensland, including areas affected by mine discharges. This paper will assess results obtained from sampling in the Mt Morgan area to illustrate the usefulness of this method of river health assessment.

This paper presents details of CRC MiningÆs work with waterjet assisted blasthole drilling. The objective of this work was to investigate techniques that reduce the cost and increase the productivity of blasthole drilling. The focus is on a technology that uses a high pressure waterjet to assist the conventional rotary rock cutting action of a tricone drill bit. The potential benefits of this technique are increased productivity, reduced drill bit wear and reduced hole deviation and hence improved quality of drilling. This paper describes the results of a laboratory based experimental program comparing conventional tri-cone drilling performance to the proposed waterjet assisted approach. Additionally, work has been completed looking at the more practical issues around the collection and sampling of drill cuttings and water recovery (recycling) when drilling with a waterjet. These studies have demonstrated that waterjet assisted drilling can significantly increase the rate of penetration over conventional rotary drilling. For the best-case experimental result, the relative improvement was over 40 per cent. More importantly, it is a starting point for examining alternative uses of the additional drill productivity obtained from waterjet assisted drilling. For example, increased drill productivity could be used to improve rock fragmentation by drilling a tighter blasthole pattern in the same time period. an existing drill fleet, then the drill fleet size could be reduced, or improved rock fragmentation could be achieved by drilling a tighter blasthole pattern within the same time period.

This paper addresses the actions of the Australian mining industry, its regulators and educational providers towards ensuring that a pool of competent mine managers is maintained in Australia and that mine management remains a desirable career path for future mining professionals. The Australian and global mining industries are experiencing an acute skills shortage. Mine managers, traditionally drawn from the ranks of mining engineers, are at the sharp end of this shortage. Exacerbating the shortage is a perception that a professional mine manager is not an attractive career option. This perception is influenced by the following forces which combine to make the role of a modern mine manager very demanding:legislative requirements for owners and managers to ensure (guarantee) the safety and health of employees; an increasing trend towards prosecution over exposure to risks to health and safety a need to be more aware and responsive to community and environment; financial, technical and æpeopleÆ pressures traditionally associated with the job of managing a mine; and mine management roles being filled by younger and less experienced professionals. Universities and other educational providers have the challenge of both ensuring that undergraduates are exposed to these issues during their study and continuing to promote mine management as a desirable career option. Anecdotal and statistical evidence indicates that young graduates are choosing and remaining in technical roles rather than taking on the challenge of mine management. Furthermore, it is suspected that the issues referred to above are contributing to the low retention rate of young professionals at mine sites. The challenges are not insurmountable, however. This paper reviews the initiatives of industry, the regulators and educational institutions in addressing these challenges. It includes a focus on:prosecution policies and their impacts, tertiary education program content and delivery modes, CPD initiatives of the Mine Managers Association of Australia, and alternative pathways for obtaining mine management qualifications.

We all live in professional silos û comfort zones, where we talk to like-minded people with the same training, experience and view of the world. We note in passing the existence of other disciplines, but they are tolerated rather than embraced. To the geologist, the metallurgist is a mad scientist conjuring gold out of some foul solution about which the less said the better. To the metallurgist, the geologist is a bearded, self-appointed sage who guesses what is under our feet by sniffing the air, and drives a Land Rover badly. As to the view of mining engineers held by both geologists and metallurgists, this is best left to the imagination. And of course we are all confused by the term æmetallurgistÆ. I am called a metallurgist though my skills are in mineral processing not metal processing, but I canÆt be called a mineralogist because that definition is already taken. *Please note that this is available as an extended abstract only*

I must tell you at the outset that I come to this conference deeply disturbed at the `role of Government in international dealings in mineral and energy resources'. I am disturbed by the confusion that now passes for policy. I am disturbed by the short- range view of critical problems taken by a majority of Governments. I am equally disturbed by the even shorter range of view taken by a growing army of industries. Many of them clamour for Governments to solve their problems in a specific way, with little regard for any other sector but their own-and with even less regard for the fact that every time a Government takes over some of their responsibilities they surrender some of their freedom. I would not say that longer range views don't exist. But I would say that they don't prevail at the present time. Instead, we are seeing the con- stant development of many policies for individual problems which don't tackle the fundamental causes. We must get back to basics without delay.

HISTORY OF PROCESS DEVELOPMENT The manufacture of coke from coal commenced at the beginning of the 17th century by heaping coal into circular mounds in the open, covering with earth, clay or ash and slowly burning the coal in the mounds to produce a heap of coke. Naturally the process was slow in production rate with low coke recovery due to the loss of that part of the coal which was completely burnt to ash. As a natural consequence of this initial carbonisation method, a coke oven design was developed so that the coking chamber, which was constructed of brick, was circular in plan, cylindrical in section with a dome shaped roof - similar in shape to the original coal mounds. As the shape of the chamber was similar to the old dome shaped beehive, the ovens were called beehive ovens. The ovens were built in long single or double rows with retaining walls between each oven and as such were known as a battery of beehive coke ovens. In these early beehive ovens, coal was charged from hand wheeled tubs into a hole into the top of each oven, hand- levelled with a rake and the oven side opening sealed with bricks and clay except for some small holes in the opening to admit limited quantity of air for combustion. Coking commenced by the heat retained in the brickwork from the previous charge. The gases evolved from the coal, together with the admitted air, were partially burnt inside the oven to supply the heat for carbonisation and the surplus gases were burnt to waste at the top charging hole. The heat from this gaseous combustion inside the oven together with the reflected heat from the brickwork of the arched roof of the oven allowed carbonisation of the coal charge to proceed from its surface slowly downwards to the floor of the oven. At the end of the coking cycle (usually 4 or 5 days) when there was no more evolution of gases, as indicated by diminishing gas flame and a drop in oven temperature, the brickwork of the oven opening was removed. The coke was then quenched by inserting a pipe with spray holes to spray water over the coke charge in the oven after which the coke was raked from the oven. The work of charging and levelling the coal, bricking and removal of oven opening, quenching and raking out the coke all required manual labour. As these ovens only carbonised a 5 to 7 ton charge of coal per cycle of 4 to 5 days, to produce 3 to 41/2 ton of marketable coke, the labour required per ton of coke was high.
