Hypogene alteration zones have been described as a precursor to high-grade haematite deposits in Australia, Brazil and elsewhere. This alteration is described as being below or distal and is typically magnetite-carbonate-silicates reflecting Mg - Fe metasomatism. This paper describes, without genetic implication, the mineral zonation and possible structural control on mineralogic variation within the Tilden Mine, a concentrating grade haematite deposit in Michigan, USA. In contrast to the high-grade deposits, these variations are not peripheral to the orebodies but are the ore. The deposit occurs within the Negaunee Iron Formation, along the southern margin of the Paleoproterozoic Marquette Range Supergroup basin. The regional structure is a fault-bounded west plunging syncline within the crustal scale Great Lakes Tectonic Zone, which forms the boundary between Archean granite-greenstone and gneissic terranes. Local structure consists of second-order anticlines and synclines with variable northwest and southwest plunges. The interaction of sedimentation and diagenesis within growth fault controlled basins, along with a possible metamorphic and/or hydrothermal overprint has resulted in a complex series of ore types. For modelling purposes, the deposit is divided into geologic domains based on both lithology and metallurgical response in the laboratory and in the plant. Mineralogic variation is recognised within individual mineral grains; at blast pattern (10 - 15 m) and development drill hole (100 m) scales.

We present plate tectonic reconstructions, showing that porphyry-type ore deposits are spatially and temporally linked to ridge subduction. A reconstruction of the Peruvian subduction system reveals an immediate metallogenic response to the arrival of the Nazca Ridge at the subduction trench, followed by southward migration of the zone of metallogenic activity due to the lateral migration of the zone of ridge subduction. A similar pattern is recognised in central Chile , where the spatio-temporal distribution of giant ore deposits coincides with the arrival of the Juan Fernandez hotspot chain at the subduction zone. We conclude that there is a spatial and temporal link between ridge subduction and ore deposit formation, with high metal fluxes concentrated in zones of ridge subduction. Thus, the recognition of tectonic patterns associated with ridge subduction can provide insights into predictive mineral discovery by enhancing our ability to predict the position of large mineral deposits in other modern and ancient orogens. Bolting forms a prestressed elastic layer of rock which is capable of supporting loads at right angles to the bolted surface. Investigations on rock bolting made with a number of different models give rise to empirical and theoretical prin- ciples for the formation and action of the layer. In the models, flat and arched layers of many materials were used simulating rock conditions ranging from closely interlocked blocks to fragments of various shapes. Results of observations made in the underground works of the Snowy Mountains Scheme are related to the mode of action of bolted surface layers of rock. There is abundant experimental, theoretical and practical explanation for the well-demonstrated capability of bolting as a means of rock support.

In this paper, the current methods for predicting surface subsidence due to underground coal mining are evaluated first. A single index, called a strata parameter (P), is then proposed to describe the overall character of the undermined strata in the context of surface subsidence. Based on the strata parameter, a method for predicting the maximum surface subsidence for various panel width (w)/depth (h) ratios is presented, which has been tested against specific empirical curves or data from several coalfields in different countries. From the data relating to several coalfields, a linear relationship between the reported average angle of draw and the strata parameter has been established. It has also been found that the strata parameter can be used for studying the locations of the inflection points and the shapes of transverse subsidence profiles.

With a view to producing increased target output every year, Indian coal mining industry is fast moving towards mechanisation but the present approach of mechanisation suffers from lack of standardisation, mainly due to nonavailability of the cutting data for various machine/rock combinations. The coal seams of the country are relatively hard in nature and the coaling machines are reported to be affecting production and productivity of the coal mine and the very trend of niechanisation. This paper presents the result of extensive study performed to visualise the cutting characteristics of coal seams of compressive strength ranging from 20 MPa to 65 NIPa. In a specially designed drag bit type coal plough rig, continuous recording of cutting forces was done with the help of a microprocessor based data logger and the specific energy of cuttability was evaluated at different depth of cut and speed of cutting. The geomechanical properties such as compressive strength, orientation and frequency of cleats etc. and different indices of coal seams were measured in the laboratory and field and relationship was developed for easy determination of specific energy.

The occurrence of coarse gold particles leading to grade complexity and sampling challenges is a common feature of many gold deposits. Poorly designed sampling protocols applied to these deposit types can lead to an excessively high fundamental sampling error. Together with other errors, the fundamental sampling error contributes to the nugget effect. Proper sample collection, preparation and assay protocols are required to minimise this error, and hence reduce the total nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for subsequent geostatistical resource estimates to be effective. A case study from the Nalunaq gold mine in Greenland is presented, which is characterised by notable quantities of coarse gold (>30 per cent +100 ¦m gold) hosted in quartz veins. Diamond drilling provides a good measure of gross geological continuity at practical grid spacings, but is not considered to represent the mineralisation effectively. On-reef development with face and bulk sampling, together with detailed geological studies were undertaken during the resource delineation phase. This contribution describes the nature of the Nalunaq deposit, its gold particle size characteristics, how sampling and assay protocols were developed (including QA/QC issues), application of GyÆs sampling theory and its calibration, and how the data was subsequently applied to grade estimation.

Barra Bonita reservoir, located in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil, has been mainly used for local navigation and electricity generation to supply a prosper region in the country. Sand mining activities in that area have an important social and economic meaning for the local community. In this reservoir there are several sand mines that produce around 45 000 m3 of sand a month. These deposits were rich in material used as concrete aggregate in the civil construction. However, nowadays a significant increase in the demand of gravel can be observed, representing a serious productive problem. This material hasnÆt been well accepted by the market and, through the years, it was disposed at open sky in piles as waste deposits. This deposits have caused environmental problems like visual impact, reduction of free spaces outside and inside the mine, source of material to erosion and sedimentation processes in lower areas, flooding as a result of the filling up process in the drainage system, among others. For a lack of an appropriate technological characterisation, this material have been mainly used to pavement internal and external areas in the mine, with lower cost associated. With the purpose of evaluate the usefulness of this material in the conventional concrete, there were conducted several tests in the disposed residue including petrographical, physical, and chemical characterisation. The petrographical analysis and the preliminary results of the study showed that the material reacts with the alkalis that are present in the conventional cement (CP-II-E-32). In order to make the application technical and economically possible a research was developed seeking forms to correct this characteristic by adding special cements with high pozzolana content. The results of the technological, physical and chemical characterisation of the products indicated the technical viability of the use of that material. The study also allowed projecting environmental improvements resulting in the elimination of the waste piles.

It has a wide range of contacts with other government agencies, local government and community groups.The paper is in three parts; firstly, an overview of the nature and contribution of the mining and extractive industries in Victoria; secondly, the industries' regulatory framework; and thirdly, the environmental issues facing the industries and the management of these issues.

Optimisation and mathematical formulations for open pit design and long-term production scheduling have been available since the 1960s. There are two main concerns in the application of existing mixed integer programming (MIP) models in open pit mines: a. the feasibility of generating both optimal solutions and practically mineable scheduling patterns and b. the inability to deal with in situ variability in orebodies and account for uncertainty. In dealing with these issues, a general open pit production scheduling method for multi-element deposits is presented and subsequently used to optimise the long-term production schedule in a nickel laterite deposit. The application shows the weaknesses of MIP formulations in terms of generating optimal solutions as well as practically feasible mining patterns. The application of the same formulation in the presence of in situ orebody variability and uncertainty uncovers a major reason for deviations of scheduled production from actual production, and outlines additional limits of traditional optimisation formulations as well as future needs.

The blast furnace is a counter current reactor. The counter current principle of the furnace makes it very efficient in transferring the heat and mass required to drive the reduction reactions inside the furnace. However, this does impose a stringent requirement on the permeability of burden material in the furnace. Lump ore is one of the key ferrous feeds used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, often accounting for ten to 20 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. As the lump ore descends through the blast furnace, it is dried, heated and reduced by the ascending hot reducing gas. To ensure good furnace permeability, generation of fines from burden materials including lump ore due to mechanical, thermal and chemical processes needs to be minimised. Unlike sinter and pellets, lump ore is subject to thermal degradation. To assess this behaviour of lump, the ISO decrepitation test (ISO 8371, 2007) is often conducted, and the result is calculated as a decrepitation index (DI). However, the DI values obtained from the existing ISO decrepitation test vary considerably between test portions and between laboratories, which makes meaningful comparison very difficult. In order to identify the sources responsible for the unacceptable repeatability, the effect of various testing conditions, such as particle size, heating rate, sample preparation and loading method, on the mean DI value was studied. DeBeers Canada Mining Inc (DeBeers) recently submitted an Environmental Assessment (EA) for its proposed Snap Lake Diamond Mine located in Northwest Territories, Canada. As part of the EA process, a site water quality management plan must be developed. Plan development requires an integrated approach such that the key factors influencing water quality can be identified and managed to minimise potential impact. A system model was therefore developed to simulate the site-wide water quality conditions and mass loadings to the principal environmental receptor of concern, Snap Lake, during operations and post-closure. Requirements of the simulation included integrating hydrology, geochemistry, hydrogeology and site management practices in a dynamic way. A unique feature of the site was the need to accommodate a complex flow system that included a feedback loop between lake water and mine water. A system model was constructed using the GoldSim software package that integrated on-site water quality and flow measurements, as well as results from independent groundwater flow and geochemical modelling efforts. The GoldSim model simulated concurrently the movement of 39 solutes through the subsurface mine and surface facilities. Solute sources considered included four different waste rock and tailings types, explosives use in the mine, treatment plant discharge, and recycled process water for dust suppression. Separate solubility constraints were identified for different regions of the flow system (eg underground mine; treatment facility; surface water bodies). Kinetic test data were used to derive temperature-dependent rate constants for use in calculating mass inputs from surface sources such as waste rock piles. The model generated water quality estimates over time for a variety of management scenarios at several potential discharge locations. The integrated approach used by the model was effective in identifying the significance of key factors influencing overall water quality such as explosives use, mine water inflow rates, waste rock reaction rates, site/mine management options, and effectiveness of treatment. The model provides an example of an effective tool for comprehensive, integrated system evaluation and management.

The Mt Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Following the evolution of the mine plan through a number of stages, the ‘sublevel shrinkage (SLS) with continuous fill’ mining method was implemented in 2010 to extract the Mt Wright orebody. The production front in this mining method is similar to a sublevel cave (SLC) operation; however, backfill is placed into the top of the production zone as opposed to requiring the overlying strata to cave.Continuous fill to replace the void created by extracting the ore was required to manage the potential risks associated with the proximity of infrastructure to the footwall, associated long-term stability and air blast potential due to the limited ‘cavability’ of the material within the cave zone. The available fill material was sourced from a disused waste dump from a previous open pit operation, which introduced further technical and economic risks associated with dilution from ‘no grade’ broken material. Procedures and processes to manage these risks have been incorporated into the operation of the mine.Despite encountering a number of challenges, the SLS method has been in use for approximately three years at Mt Wright and has proven to be viable economically, technically and operationally. After the minim operation, most raw materials that occur in the earth's crust require some form of processing or refining before they can be converted into a final end product. In the mineral industry these remarks apply to materials such as iron ore, bauxite, limestone, copper ore and many others that are found in Australia in large quantities. Processing plants for these raw materials operate more efficiently, however, if the feed to them is consistent in both physical and chemical characteristics. Such uniformity rarely occurs in nature so that some form of homogenisation, or blending, is required ahead of the processing plant. Bending also assists the mining operation itself by reducing; the need for selective mining and, by combining high and low grade materials, a more uniformly graded, commercially acceptable product can be obtained, thereby increasing the commercial life of a mine or quarry. Bed blending is the most efficient of the processes available, and following its development in the United States in 1905, over 100 plants have been installed, or are under construction, all over the world. The original process, the Robins--Nessiter system, has been the subject of continued improvements and refinements, so that economical capacities are possible from less than 100 l.t.p.h. up to 10,000 l.t.p,h. and beyond.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government designs the stormwater storage plans in underground, as a measure of flood control in completed urban district and improvement of combined sewarage system. This time, introducing those plans, we report about IKEJIRI and SIN-KOMAZAWA STORAGE TRUNK LINEs design and construction. They are located in Meguro river basin of the Morigasaki drainage area. Both storage trunk lines have capacity to store 15O,000m3 of stormwater. They are in use for countermeasure of flood till Meguro river's strengthening (intensity 50 mm/h) is ended. And after the strengthening, they will be in use for improvement of river water quality, through the storage of combined sewage and first runoff, which, otherwise overflows weirs and flows to river in a rainy day. These storage trunk line's full length is about 5700m. Boring diameter 66140 mm (f = 2672m) and 47800 mm (I = 2866m) of these tunnels are constructed by Mechanical Shield tunnelling method. And boring diameter 3600 mm x 4000 mm (R = 180m) is constructed by NATM tunnelling method. We began works in 1983, and have a mind to complete in 1987.

In recent years, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of mechanically stirred flotation cells has been used to study the complexity of the flow within the cells. In CFD modelling, the flotation cell is discretised into individual finite volumes where local values of flow properties are calculated. The flotation effect is studied as three subprocesses including collision, attachment and detachment. In the present work, these subprocesses are modelled in a laboratory flotation cell. The flotation kinetics involving a population balance for particles in a semi-batch process has been developed. From turbulent collision models, the local rates of bubble-particle encounters have been estimated from the local turbulent velocities. The probabilities of collision, adhesion and stabilisation have been calculated at each location in the flotation cell. The net rate of attachment, after accounting for detachments, has been used in the kinetic model involving transient CFD simulations with removal of bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer. Comparison of the predicted fraction of particles remaining in the cell and the fraction of free particles to the total number of particles remaining in the cell indicates that the particle recovery rate to the pulp-froth interface is much slower than the net attachment rates. For the case studied, the results indicate that the bubbles are loaded with particles quite quickly, and that the bubble surface area flux is the limiting factor in the recovery rate at the froth interface. This explains why the relationship between flotation rate and bubble surface area flux is generally used as a criterion for designing flotation cells. The predicted flotation rate constants also indicate that fine and large particles do not float as well as intermediate sized particles of 120 - 240 ¦m range. This is consistent with the flotation recovery generally observed in flotation practice. The magnitude of the flotation rate constants obtained by CFD modelling indicates that transport rates of the bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer contribute quite significantly to the overall flotation rate and this is likely to be the case especially in plant-scale equipment.

The West Coast of South Africa is well known for its placer gem quality diamond deposits and also associated with these hosts of Cenozoic unconsolidated marine and aeolian sand and gravel are significant concentrations of heavy minerals. Exploration for economic concentrations of zircon, ilmenite and rutile along the coast started in the mid-1980s. This resulted in the discovery of an inferred 1.6 billion tonne resource with a grade of ten per cent total heavy minerals (THM), which developed into the Namakwa Sands Mine, a world-class producer of heavy minerals. Several other resources, including satellite deposits proximal and distal to the mine area, extensive diamond mine dumps and present day beach placers, demonstrate the vast heavy mineral potential along the West Coast. The favourable gangue to economic mineral ratio, a higher zircon content compared to other similar deposits, relatively lower U+TH content of zircon, low slimes content and effectively pristine low chromium-manganese ilmenite of these deposits, render them attractive exploration targets. Negative factors that will affect conventional mineral beneficiation and liberation include secondary mineral coatings and the regional coastal development of several layers of superimposed duricrust. The economically attractive heavy mineral assemblage along the West Coast is the result of erosion of the proximal, gneissic Namaqualand Metamorphic Province and mature Table Mountain Group sandstone, concentration by marine and aeolian processes and preservation under arid climatological conditions over a period of more than 100 Ma.

Yandicoogina (Yandi) open pit mine is located in the eastern part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It hosts pisolitic iron-oxide mineralisation distributed within a meandering paleoriver channel. The deposit is characterised by clays occurring as lenses, accretions, desiccation joint infill and voids in the pisolite ore. The irregular shapes and highly erratic distribution of these clay pods represent a serious challenge for grade control at this mine.The current grade control approach used at the Yandi mine is based on sampling of production blastholes on a 6 m X 6 m spacing. Their good spatial coverage, tight spacing and low cost make blastholes a very convenient media for grade control and ore-waste definition. However the potential downside of this grade control approach is poor sample representivity. An alternative grade control approach is to drill and sample using reverse circulation (RC) holes distributed on a 25 m X 25 m grid. This approach has been tested in Yandi mine and compared with the blasthole sampling approach for sample representivity. The impact of increased drill spacing on mining block predictions has been studied using a conditional simulation technique. Blasthole and RC samples proved to be similarly biased, underestimating Al2O3 and SiO2 grades and overestimating Fe grades, when compared to full cone assays. These results show that using RC drilling for grade control at the Yandi open pit will not necessarily improve the representivity of the grade control samples. However, increasing the grade control spacing to 25 m X 25 m will lead to more than 12 per cent of the selective mining unit (SMU) sized blocks being misclassified. This is approximately a two-fold increase in the number of misclassified SMU blocks in comparison with 5 m X 5 m spacing.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is a world-class operation located in an extreme environment 220 km south of the Arctic Circle in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics û such as limited winter access via an ice road, mine infrastructure being located on an island, with mining taking place behind dykes holding back a lake, temperatures at the mine that get down to -45¦C in winter, and the presence of bears, wolves, foxes and wolverines! One thing that Diavik does have in common with other mines around the world is the need for reconciliation. In late 2005 Diavik implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate the process of reconciling geological models, mine plans, production data and plant results. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation. It outlines the migration of Diavik away from a comprehensive and effective spreadsheet-based reconciliation process to a commercial grade, automated and web-based information management system. This paper documents the reasons for moving away from the spreadsheet system, the key parameters used for reconciliation, and the benefits gained by closing the loop between reconciliation and ongoing process improvement.

The surface treatment works in the Mount Isa Mines Limited copper stream consist of a concentrator and smelter with annual capacities of 5.6 million tonnes of ore and production of 155 000 tonnes of anode copper respectively. Both plants have been sites for process optimisation in recent years, the emphasis being to achieve productivity gains in each particular plant. The continued low real world prices for copper resulted in an in-depth review of the entire copper process stream. This indicated the need for developments within both the concentrator and smelter, and changes to operating strategy to ensure that the entire treatment stream could be optimised. The paper reviews these changes.
