A positive mill reconciliation at a mine is a double-edged-sword. Much back slapping happens. The bank and the board can’t get enough until the downside becomes apparent. Over a prolonged period, there becomes an issue with market perception and the potential for shareholders to be misinformed regarding the potential value of the project. In addition, there are impacts on mine scheduling, waste allocation (or lack thereof), government expectations, and the potential for misguided external assumptions regarding the ‘unexpected’ results. The PT Agincourt Resources Martabe Gold Mine has shown a significant under-call, in the order of 20% total gold metal, between the Mineral Resource (MR) estimates and Grade Control (GC) estimates since production commenced in 2012. Recently, the under-call has been reduced by incorporating the use of grade control drilling in the MR grade estimates. Despite recent improvements in reconciliation, drilling in 2017 at both Purnama and Barani open pits shows that infill reverse circulation (RC) drill holes often produce significantly higher grades than those predicted in the MR block model. Pasminco is actively addressing the optimal utilisation of the known orebody at the Broken Hill mine, in addition to actively exploring for economic mineralisation in the region. As part of the policy of better utilising the known mineralisation a major upgrade of geological systems at the mine was initiated. The software chosen for this change was Maptek's Vulcan, mainly because of the ease of use of this package. Rather than having numerous data sources in varying software packages the mine aimed to limit interfaces and packages. The decision to upgrade the mine's software was not taken lightly, especially in view of the inature stage of Broken Hill mining operations. However, the current mine life of Pasminco Broken Hill mine is I I years, which is longer than many new mines setting up in Australia today. Also, a more sophisticated system brings with it a better understanding of the economic mineralisation, possibly extending the mine life further. The process of moving the Broken Hill databases into Vulcan was a huge task which included, database transfer, digitising, wire framing, modelling and eventually ore resource calculation. To ensure the validity of the new ore resource accounting system, the existing system was run as a duplicate for the introductory year, providing a comparison and if necessary a safety net. The benefits of such a change, however, became apparent almost immediately. Area geologists realised the opportunity to revise geological interpretations in their areas of responsibility, enabling them to obtain a better understanding of orebody morphology. Three- diniensional analysis provides an excellent method by which review of ore targets both in the underground and mine lease exploration areas can he made. As each new find of mineralisation enters the system and hopefully extends the mine life, the opportunities for further mineral exploration in Broken Hill area by Pasminco are enhanced.

Preliminary experiments have shown that, when used in a fusedchloride electrolyte, titanium carbide anodes dissolve yielding lower titanium chlorides which nlay be electrolysed in situ to produce a cathode deposit of pure titanium metal. The anode residues are easily withdrawn from the cell. Further experiments have established the operating conditions for maximum efficiency in the process.The process is essentially two-stage, viz.: (1) titanium carbide production, (2) electrolysis producing metal. This paper discusses considerations to be made for the selection of rock tunnelling machines, as opposed to drilling and blasting. A systematic approach is presented in terms of utilizing data frcm site investigations to accurately forecast machine performance for estimating and planning purposes and to help minimise associated risks. Useful rock index properties are identified, and correlations for predicting advance rates for roadheader and full face machines are presented together with a simple method of characteristing rock mass conditions for estimating machine utilization and the savings to be gained in support costs. Finally considerations for tunnelling in adverse ground, for advance probing and for large sized tunnels are outlined.

Much of the data required for the evaluation of mine design is obtained from bore cores. It is essential to collect data that is useful and not to overlook features which might have adverse effects upon the mining practices and which might not be readily discernible to the untrained eye when examining bore cores. Interpretation of the data has progressed from the use of single-value properties, such as ultimate compressive strength or Young's modulus, to the utilisation of most measurable quantities. The simulation techniques used employ physical and mathematical models for prediction of mining conditions or strata behaviour. The application and capabilities of these methods to mine design are discussed.

Sintering of lead-zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation to provide both desulfurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulfur dioxide gas for sulfuric acid manufacture.Moisture control of feed mixes is of paramount importance in the sintering operation and improvements in this area have realised increases in overall plant performance.

The Australian mining industry isstill labouring under the impression. created by the Fitzgerald Report that it does not pay suffic- ient tax. This would appear to be the raison d'etre of the resource rent tax debate. The authors quantitatively compare the cash flows to the mine and government resulting from a large strip coal mine in central Queensland under a number of Australian and international taxation policies. The Liberal government policies are found to be internationally competitive while the Labor 1975 policy is excessively punitive. The present value of the returns to the public from the Liberal 1977 policy vary between three and six times the net present value to the mine, which belies the necessity for the imposition of a super tax. The levelling of a special royalty, excess rail freight, by Queensland could severely re- strict the development of new mines in the Bowen Basin. The impact of excessive freight rates is analysed on a combined strip-deep mine typical of the new projects nearing development in the region. Otherwise economic mines can be made marginal or even sub economic by this tax. Even with moderate rail freights, the mining tax laws of New South Wales are more favourable to the industry than are Queensland's.

The education system today is turning out potential Mine Managers and Superintendents for the coal industry who are lacking in adequate management knowledge. They are required by the Mining Act to be highly skilled operators who are operations and production oriented. This puts them in much the same category as airline pilots and ships' captains. The real need is for them to be management and profit orientated. Changes over the years in Managers' and Superintendents' roles are highlighted by identifying those professions and vocations with whom they must now work. Comparing classifications in the 1916 award and the current award, and making a comparison between management and mining degree courses, leads to the conclusion that separate degree courses are necessary for future Mine Managers and Mining Engineers. Mine management must become a profession in its own right if optimum profits are to be made from mining in the future.

An innovative process for the separation of carbonaceous minerals from bulk ores is presented. In this process, the surface of carbonate minerals is reacted with acid used to nucleate CO2 bubbles at the particle solution interface. Entraining the liberated CO2 gas at the surface via coating agent renders the particle more buoyant providing for a selective separation from non-carbonate containing masses. Different surfactants were tested to stabilise the bubbles and float the particles. In this paper, separation of dolomite from apatite using PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) as a coating agent, is discussed. "In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. The model will predict not only the valuable mineral liberation but also gangue liberation, which will be useful to those who are looking to remove liberated gangue from comminution circuits.CITATION:Subasinghe, G K N, and Dunne, R, 2016. The Inglewood Gold Project consists of several titles in and around the Inglewood and Wedderburn Goldfields which were purchased from Strata Mining Corporation (now Excalibur Mining Corporation). The Inglewood goldfield has a historical production of approximately 160 000 tonnes at 23 grams per tonne. The company has reopened and developed the Maxwells reef, picking up a high-grade shoot (Max Shoot) identified and worked by Goldquest et al up until 1994. Production ceased on a low gold price, rapidly reducing vein size and a requirement for further development. Greater Bendigo Gold Mines Ltd (GBM) has undertaken the development and encountered the mineralised vein in an increasing size setting with high grades and the existing mine development has access to a further shoot to the north (Max North Shoot). The Maxwells reef also contains the Woolf shoot south of the Maxwells shaft and an inferred resource of ~20 000 ounces is contained from 60 m below surface. Best intersection 2.9 m at 50 g/t. The Maxwells reef area produced approximately 20 per cent of the Inglewood goldfields production and GBM is preparing to increase its exploration efforts across the rest of the field. A processing plant has been constructed at the Maxwells mine site, which is capable of treating tailings, hard rock and alluvial material utilising gravity recovery. The existing Maxwells tailings have been excavated and treatment commenced. It is intended to produce a sand product from the tailings for resale and to reduce the storage requirements per tonne. Several large water dams constructed by Goldquest in the 1990s are being re-engineered to enable storage of significant tonnages of tailings. A level of surface and underground production is planned for 2008 and this is to be expanded into 2009 and beyond. The long-term future at Inglewood is envisaged as structural repeats at depth below the current workings and a project plan to gain deep access will be prepared on successful drilling results.

ISP (Imperial Smelting Process) produces zinc and lead simultaneously from zinc and lead sulphide concentrates and recovers copper and precious metals into a lead bullion. The strength of sinter is important to keep permeability in the shaft of the Imperial Smleting Furnace. The residual sulphur content of the sinter is also important as it causes metal losses into slag. The paper describes an investigation into the sintering operations to improve sulphur elimination and sinter strength. The micro structure of the sinter and the effect of the blast rate, sintering temperature etc have been studied.

An extensive laboratory campaign was conducted to find a suitable water soluble collector to replace diphenylguanidine (DPG) in the matte separation process. The examination of the collectors was done by measuring the rate of flotation and the best candidate collectors were selected on the basis of the rate parameters. As a result of this search mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) was selected for a plant trial. A plant trial of two weeks duration confirmed that MBT will produce separations at least as good as those obtained with DPG.

Mathematical modelling of continuous rotary vacuum filtration has been limited by the wide range of variables and the absence of connecting equations linking the variables. The filter type and size, mechanical design and predicted performance are generally determined by laboratory leaf tests on representative samples of slurry, or plant samples from an operating filter. A model has been developed which includes the major process variables such as slurry feed rate and concentration, cake thickness, wash water and air flow rates, to predict the filter production throughput, cake moisture and residual solubles. Where possible the model incorporates well established equations relating form filtration, washing and drying rates of the filter cake. Where an equation has not been formulated, standard curve fitting programs have been used to establish an algorithm. The theoretical equations and the derived algorithms are defined in the text. A major feature of the model is that operators, metallurgists, process, mechanical and instrumentation engineers become more aware of the interaction of process variables, the principles of the equipment design and its limitations when operating at peak performance. The model has specific application in the alumina industry where a high moisture content of the filter cake can increase chemical losses and energy costs, and in the coal industry where overseas companies are insisting on lower export coal moistures.

It's my privilege to welcome you here this afternoon on behalf of the Sydney Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This is a most important gathering. You, the delegates, represent what is probably the most influential cross-section of the mining investment community and the oil and gas investment community to meet as a group during the last decade. We are meeting today and tomorrow to review two related issues that will have far reaching implications for the effective use of capital by the natural resources sector in the 1990's. The views which will emerge over the two days will almost certainly 'influence the availability of new capital to the companies in the natural resources sector for the decade ahead. The two principal themes of Minval '89 are, first, the valuation of mining and oil and gas assets and securities, and second, disclosure and reporting requirements in the capital markets which relate specifically to natural resources companies. This conference is taking place at a time when further consolidation and rationalisation appears likely within the mining industry. Although the base metals and other sectors of the industry are enjoying profitability not seen since the early 1980's there is caution about committing to new capacity which could bring about a return to the low prices and excess supply which prevailed during much of the last ten years. These conditions have led to increased takeover activity within the mining industry overseas, and similar trends are as evident here in Australia as they are elsewhere. Recognition of value is therefore likely to become more important than ever before in preserving shareholder wealth, for creating new wealth and for preserving the financial health of the resources industry in the future. Valuation therefore is the first theme of the conference.

This session comprises six papers: One paper is specifically on advances in drilling techniques, a paper presents a classification for water inrush rich with corresponding guidelines for protection, two papers are concerned with mining impacts in integrated catchment management - one from the quality viewpoint and the other from the quality viewpoint, and the final two papers are case studies of mine dewatering - one for an underground mine threatened by a karst limestone aquifer and the other of an open-cut mine threatened by interbedded sand aquifers. The paper entitled, Practical mine dewatering by means of surface drilled wells by Sides is innovative in presenting the case for wells as cost effective and appropriate for a number of purposes including exploration, re-opening old mines, dewatering, grout emplacement and monitoring.

Block models generated with all linear interpolation algorithms contain inherent smoothing that typically results in an underestimation of grades and overestimation of tonnes in resource estimates. For mineral deposits that are anticipated to be exploited by underground mining methods excessive smoothing may result in materially misleading estimates of Ore Reserves. To account for smoothing in the open pit mining environment recoverable reserve techniques such as indicator kriging and uniform conditioning are employed to provide non-spatially located proportions of the large blocks above the cut-off grade. These models are not suitable for underground mine planning where the actual location of material above cut-off is required to design its extraction. To correct for excessive smoothing it is proposed to modify the ordinary kriged block estimates a posteriori using an affine correction with a local variance adjustment factor. The proposed methodology is demonstrated for a base metal deposit during a feasibility study.

Dispersed gem corundum is mined from placers, commonly from basalt fields, as occurs along eastern Australian and Asian continental margins. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis (LA-ICP-MS) of Australian corundum allows genetic distinctions among these suites and gives clues to their primary lithospheric sources prior to basaltic delivery. Bimodal corundum suites at Barrington Tops, Cudgegong-Gulgong-Macquarie River and Yarrowitch, New South Wales (NSW), include lower Ga, higher Mg æmetamorphicÆ and higher Ga, lower Mg æmagmaticÆ groups. The Barrington Tops æmetamorphicÆ corundum is more Fe-rich (av 4500 - 7100 ppm) than Cudgegong- Macquarie River equivalents (av Fe 1800 - 2100 ppm). Yarrowitch corundum is relatively low in Fe, Ti and Cr. Along with other eastern Australian data (north-east Tasmania; New England, NSW) and from gem fields elsewhere, the combined trace element and O isotope data, reveal considerable geographic and genetic variations within the corundum suites. A few corundum groups contain noticeable Be, Sn, Ta, Nb, a particular genetic message that also precludes easy distinction of treated corundum in the gem trade. Expanding geochemical, inclusion and geochronological data on gem corundum hold promise for characterising derivative gem corundum on both geographic and genetic features.

Largely inherited from the past and from strictly internal laboratory use, the certification of reference material using round-robin assaying is often insufficient for the use made today for external assay laboratory control by client parties. Certification often needs to be revisited on the basis of existing round-robin data, especially to derive reproducibility parameters to the end of establishing probabilistic performance gates for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch-ærejectionÆ). The most common difficulty arises when only a few certification samples have been analysed in one single batch by each laboratory, so that the round-robin data do not contain the full variability that needs to be quantified. Existing certification data sets from properly submitted round-robin samples were studied using analysis of variance to derive a remedial method, leading to the proposal of default correction factors to restore full variability estimates when no other avenue is available.

The type of population encountered in the sampling of coal, ores and other products of natural phenomena is one in which the variance within a cluster of elements generally increases steadily as the size of the cluster increases. To enable estimation of variances of stratified random or systematic sampling for such populations one must model the serial correlation function or alternatively, the variogram function. The author has postulated a specific symmetry of the serial correlation function which leads to expressions with rich theoretical and practical implications. These expressions provide a spatial correlation function which explains power law relationships often observed in studies of dispersion variances. They also enable straightforward calculations of sampling variances. The importance of the role of finite population size in the equations leads one to examine previously held concepts of ælargeÆ and æsmallÆ sample populations. The model based on the symmetry postulate is a fractal model with the serial correlation function of a hypothetically infinite population being of the same form as that developed by Mandelbrot for discrete fractional noise. Techniques used in fractal mathematics apply, including box counting and fitting of a dimension function. The paper establishes a framework for the understanding of this fractal theory and demonstrates how to calculate sampling variances from the model variogram using simulated data fitting the model.
