Gas drainage has been practiced for many years mainly for safety reasons in various countries in Europe, in the U.S.A., the U.K. and Japan. Legislation has been developed to control the production, transport- ation and utilisation of methane and associated gases. Gas drainage is now being carried out at some Australian Collieries, but as this is a new venture little specific legislation is available. This paper briefly describes the drainage methods and legislation applied overseas, gives a brief history of gas drainage in N.S.W. and indicates the deficiencies of the present legislation. It outlines the approach to new legislation which will deal comprehensively with gas drainage operations and utilisation in New South Wales.

The Pine Creek gold mining development consists of a 1000000 tonne/yr open cut mine, a carbon-in-pulp processing plant and support facilities. The operation is located at Pine Creek, 230 km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The mine was officially opened in late October 1985, having been designed and constructed in less than twelve months, despite front end expenditure constraints and unseasonal cyclonic rains shortly after commencement of site activity. Non-traditional methods and attitudes were required to be adopted by both Engineer and Owner to successfully bring the project from preliminary design through construction and commissioning in a minimum time. Those areas which differ from the more traditional approaches to Project Management are examined together with a review of the advantages and penalties of these methods.

As the oxide reserves in an oxide/sulphide deposit are exhausted transition to the treatment of sulphides should be investigated in detail and well before processing the sulphide ore commences. The investigation should be broad based to consider all treatment options and not restricted entirely by the existing process plant treatment method. These options may include cyanidation, flotation, roasting, bacterial leaching or gravity treatment and are chosen on the basis of various testwork responses. Experiences in laboratory testing of sulphides and treatment of sulphides at various operations are discussed. This includes the treatment of copper/gold sulphides, CIP treatment of sulphides and treatment of marcasite ore in a conventional CIP circuit.

The Ernest Henry Mine is a copper-gold open pit operation situated in northwest Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper, with a current throughput of 11 Mtpa, however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in mid 2011. The deposit dips approximately 45º and extends for at least another 400 m vertically below the final 530 m deep pit design.Construction and development of a sublevel caving (SLC) operation beneath the open pit was approved in December 2009. The feasibility design requires 39 km of development to be completed prior to production, which will commence in the fourth quarter of 2011. Initial ore production will be trucked and will increase to 3 Mtpa by the end of 2012, after which a hoisting shaft will be used. Ore production will then increase to 5 Mtpa in 2013 and ultimately to 6 Mtpa in 2016.Two 3000 kilo watt of refrigeration (kW(R)) modular refrigeration plants will be installed, as well as two 1600 kW mixed-flow fans capable of a combined flow rate of 780 m3/s at a total pressure loss across the mine of 2000 Pa. The main fans will be installed underground and will exhaust into the base of the pit.The following challenges were faced in the development of the ventilation and refrigeration network:•a relatively steep geothermal gradient,•tropical ambient conditions,•working under a wide pit shell, and•a large underground trucking fleet prior to shaft commissioning.A considerable number of ventilation studies were conducted with later studies extensively using Ventsim Visual™ mine ventilation software to complete the design process of the ventilation and refrigeration networks, including the comparison of several alternative designs. The paper focuses on design challenges prior to the commissioning of the hoisting shaft, and discusses resistance optimisation and occupational hygiene-related design parameters, such as heat and diesel emissions, production level ventilation, main fan selection and location, and refrigeration requirements.

The selection of the mode of transport for moving bulk materials is never a simple task as there are various concerns/considerations applied to the selection of the most practical and cost-effective mode of transport to be used to move bulk materials. This paper examines various alternatives for moving ore from a mine at the top of a mountain to a process plant below (some 5000 m apart and a vertical drop of 650 m). The terrain of the mountain section of the route has added its own specific requirements, resulting in the final selection of a pipe conveyor for this application. The paper further addresses the final selection of hardware used in the implementation of the solution.

Natural Gas has been available in New Zealand for twenty years. During that time the gas share of the energy market has grown and now natural gas forms a significant part of New Zealand's energy scene, helping consumers to achieve a higher standard of living, and reducing dependence upon imported oil.Natural gas is now used for petrochemical manufacture and power generation in addition to direct supply to consumers.As concern for the environment continues to build, natural gas will have an increasingly important role to fill in these markets. This paper sets out the background to the development of natural gas in New Zealand and identifies the current markets. It then looks at those matters which are likely to influence the role of natural gas in the 1990s.

Constructing upstream raises with tailings is an accepted and cost-effective practice in Western Australia, where the climatic conditions are favourable, desiccation (and hence overconsolidation) occurs rapidly due to air drying and there is a perceived low seismic risk. This is in contrast to many other settings, where there is either a positive water balance, high seismicity or a combination of both. In recent times, there has been an increased focus on seismicity in areas of Australia that have historically been considered to be of low seismic risk. The increased focus is driven by two recently published documents used by tailings practitioners and increased awareness from corporate entities, particularly those with mines in high-seismicity regions such as South-East Asia and South America (particularly Chile).The increased awareness has resulted in increased rigour being applied to seismic design of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in general, and particularly upstream-raised TSFs. This paper compares the results of a seismic stability assessment for an upstream-raised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, which has historically been considered a low seismic area, with a seismic stability assessment carried out for a crossvalley TSF containing similar tailings but located in a high-rainfall, high-seismic setting in South-East Asia. The influence of the adopted design earthquake values on the results of the assessments and the potential impact of the maximum design earthquake (MDE) on the design approach is presented for both cases. The results indicate that although the Western Australian site is located in an area thought to have low seismic risk, the screening level analyses suggest that the MDE could result in liquefaction of the tailings materials. Primay (syngenetic and protogenetic) inclusions - i.e. minerals formed during or before diamond growth and encapsulated in the diamond - provide important information on the origin of diamond. Recent Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd dating of such inclusions has yielded crystallization ages older than their volcanic host, implying that diamonds are mantle xenocrysts. In this paper we report results of studies on the nature of syngenetic inclusions and the carbon isotopic compositons of the host diamond from the West Australian diamond deposits at Argyle and Elllendale. The Argyle diamonds are dominantly, of eclogitic paragensis and are characterized by strongly C depleted compositions. The theory of constraints (TOC) is a business improvement method that focuses on exploiting a business’s bottleneck to deliver the highest possible profit. Early applications were mostly in the manufacturing industry; however, the theory in itself is completely generic and has now been applied widely in other industries such as services, retail, software and distribution, amongst others. The intent of the approach is attractive – it focuses on the ‘silver bullet’ rather than ‘death by a hundred projects’, and it focuses on growth rather than cost cutting. Application within the mining industry has been limited to date, although there are a few applications emerging. This paper discusses how TOC can be applied to maximise value during the project planning phase and how to maximise profits when the mine is operational. The paper uses two case studies to illustrate the approach. Case study 1 uses the approach to improve tactical mine planning, which delivers an increase in revenue of 58 per cent. The properties of tailings that emanate from laterite nickel processing plants are significantly different to most other mine tailings. They typically comprise a mixture of fine materials that are made up of altered clays, chemical residues and salts. Neutralisation processes that are undertaken prior to tailings discharge result in a high proportion of gypsum in the tailings. The salinity of the pore fluid is commonly higher than 140 g/L of salts, dominated by magnesium sulfate. Hydraulically-placed tailings that undergo solar evaporation typically reach dry densities of less than 1 t/m3 of insoluble solids. In situ water contents after many months of drying may be as high as 80 per cent, and peak undrained shear strengths are unlikely to be greater than 20 kPa.This type of material is not conducive to upstream raising, from both a practicality and overall slope stability perspective. Even at rates of rise of less than 1 m/a, it is difficult to effect upstream raising on unaltered laterite nickel tailings. However, the authors have successfully designed and implemented upstream-raised laterite nickel tailings storage facilities. The upstream raises have been formed from both imported natural materials and air-dried and compacted tailings borrowed from the tailings beaches.Drying and associated strength gain has been achieved through various means of mechanical intervention, repeatedly exposing a zone of tailings to the atmosphere for evaporation. Field trials have been undertaken to optimise the approach, and the findings from the trials have been implemented in practice to allow stable upstream raises to be constructed. HPGRs (high pressure grinding rolls) have been developed within the last decades for energy efficient processing of a wide variety of ores. Special interest has been raised by projects increasing the capacities of processing plants by installing HPGRs prior to ball mills. Bond ball mill tests have been used for decades as a base for ball mill dimensioning in mineral circuits. For final CAPEXOPEX considerations of the processing circuit, one key question is about the level of grinding energy split between HPGR and downstream grinding stages. This is especially interesting if the downstream process comprises multiple grinding stages combined with separation steps. The paper presents investigations on grinding energy consumption, size distribution and microfracturing of HPGR products, which affect the efficiency of the whole comminution and sorting process.

Haul truck drivers are at a high risk of developing fatigue due to the monotonous nature of the work and demanding shift rosters. In the mining industry, fatigue is identified as a major contributing factor in several fatal accidents a year. A number of fatigue detection devices are now available, that can contribute to improved fatigue risk management in the mining industry. This paper describes the technology and algorithms behind one particular product which is both predictive and un-obtrusive to the operator. The Advisory System for Tired Drivers (ASTiD), was developed by Fatigue Management International (FMI) in collaboration with the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre (LSRC), both in the United Kingdom. While this system includes a model of the human circadian rhythm as a bias for predicting expected fatigue risk by time of day, it also uses yaw data generated by a solid-state gyroscope in the horizontal plane. Algorithms analyse this data to determine the level of monotony of actual driving conditions and to detect changes in steering control caused by driver fatigue. During normal levels of attention, a haul truck driver applies continuous, small adjustments to the steering wheel. As the level of fatigue increases, steering adjustments become less frequent and more erratic. Differentiating between these modes of control in the highly variable mining environment is accomplished by chromatic processing of the gyroscope data. This paper will go into some detail explaining the principles behind chromatic processing and the specific application of these in detecting fatigue in haul truck operators.Technology in itself is not the solution to addressing operator fatigue, but it plays an important role in ongoing monitoring and maintaining awareness with mining personnel. Furthermore, the specific principles behind ASTiD technology support a risk-based approach to fatigue management, allowing optimisation of the mining operation for productivity as well as safety.

Blast exclusion zones are instrumental in protecting equipment and personnel. When there is no constraint in footprint, the exclusion zone can be enormous, practically eliminating the hazard of flyrock. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case and in many circumstances the blast design needs to be altered to suite such scenarios. When a conservative design approach is taken, it could completely eliminate any form of ejection, whether it is from the free face or the bench itself. The degree to which typical flyrock models describe fragment motion through air with ballistic flight equations are not justified when such a high level of control is applied. The investigations of the Leningrad ruining lilstitute on this problem are carrying out in the following main directions: 1) The analysis and study of contaminants migration at particular sites of mining development; 2) The working out of theoretical and me- thodical basic principles of aquifers migration tests; 3) The work- ing out of methods of the forcasting of groundwater pollution pro- cesses; 4) The theoretical and uethodical substantiation of hydro- geological observations of groundwater pollution processes; 5) The wort ing out of the measures at the groundwater control and their rational use at the particular sites of mining development. The research that have been carried out by the present moment have covered the wide range of wining and geological conditions -- as from the point of view of specific genetic types of water-be- aring rocks (porous, fissured and fissured-porous), as well as from the point of view of pollution sources (surface waste water basins and underground basins of non-standard water) and the cha- racter of the latter's migration (tracers, physically neutral ef- fluents, heavy or light ones). The combination of specialized mi- gration tests and observations carryed out at uoayi, sites, as well as the following ar~,alysis o:i the data of field study allowed to get useful theoretical, methodical and practical results on the all directions above mentioned, ns the summing up of these results the author proposed the concept of controlled ground :ester polluti on. Blast movement measurement is a key component of grade control, enabling mines to carry all of the precision involved in locating ore blocks, through a chaotic blast, to production. A monitoring system was developed about ten years ago so that mine operation personnel can measure three dimensional movement in every production blast. Research has shown that blast movement is always highly variable with a significant non-deterministic component. The consequence is that modelling will be inaccurate and therefore optimal ore recovery can only be achieved by direct measurement of blast movement.Three dimensional movement vectors are measured at discrete locations in the blast. If blast movement is only measured at one location in a blast pattern, data is severely limited and has all of the inherent inaccuracies of modelling a variable population. It is intuitive that the accuracy of defining the post-blast ore block mark-ups are proportional to the number of movement measurement locations, however increasing the number of monitoring locations causes increases to the direct operating costs of the mine.A cost-benefit analysis is used to explore the optimal number of monitoring locations. Using the method described in this paper, an automated selection of the number and location of blast movement monitors are analysed against the value of recovered ore compared to the control, for each trial.CITATION:Loeb, J and Thornton, D, 2014. The eruption 75,000 y ago of the Younger Toba Tuff ignimbrite and associated ash-fall ranks as the greatest known volcanic event of the past million years. The ignimbrite is known to cover 21,000 km2 (it may extend farther under alluvium of the coastal plain) and forms a low-angle depositional shield centered on the Lake Toba caldera. The ignimbrite is largely nonwelded and shows systematic outward decreases in lithic and crystal contents and clast sizes. Coarse lithic lag breccias that occur at places 85 km apart point to two or more vents on a fissure having this length. The extensive associated ash-fall traceable as far as Malaysia and India is evidently a co-ignimbrite ash but could have a phreatomag-matic component. The Lake Toba caldera measures95 x 35 km and is >1 kn deep. It is not a single caldera but comprises several contiguous depressions and grabens diversified by two re-surgent domes. Earlier parts of the caldera are related to at least two earlier ignimbrites including the Older Toba Tuff dated by Chesner at 0.5 Ma. The caldera is elongated parallel to, and is only 25 km from, the great Sumatra strike-slip fault, and it can be considered almost certain that the caldera is in part a kind of pull-apart structure. The ignimbrites are very crystal-rich. There is no reason to think basaltic magma was involved in their emplacement. Together with ash-falls they have a total volume of several thousand cubic kilometers. They can be categorized as originating from partially crystallized granitic magmas that erupted because tectonic pull-apart occurred several times across the pluton. Small rhyolitic lava domes on fault-lines comprise the youngest volcanic products.

Mount Isa mine has a long history of successful exploration since discovery 70 years ago. Remaining reserves, although substantial, exist in a scheduling framework which involves long-term production from new ore sources with attendant technical risk and major capital investment. Current exploration aims to incrementally increase reserve tonnage to maintain existing production levels as well as to provide a buffer for potential start-up delays from new ore sources. Exploration also aims to increase the net present value of the operation by discovering new major orebodies around the Mount Isa and Hilton mines.

As an indication of the overall quality for the three periods the expected run of mine ashes are given. Operating Period R.O.M. Quality Years 1 - 4 22.0% Ash (db) Years 5 - 14 18.8% Ash (db) Years 15 - 20 17.3% Ash (db) The size distribution of the coal was found to be generally as predicted in the 1980 study. However the ash, particularly in the smaller fractions, was found to be higher due to the previously mentioned friable nature of contaminant material. Following evaluation of this additional information, the proposed washery design was reconsidered. Three basic process schemes were examined. 1. A jig with two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for treatment of three different size ranges. 2. A heavy medium vessel, two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for the different size fractions. 3. A jig for initial treatment of the total feed (that is all sizes) with single-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for rewashing of the intermediate and smaller size Fractions.
