Open pit operators are facing a number of challenges in the area of blasting and blasting processes, such as wall control, quality of fragmentation, explosives consumption and vibration. Remaining financially viable is one of the most significant objectives for mining professionals as they work through the blasting challenges within the mining chain of processes. This objective is such a significant challenge, primarily due to the high consumption of materials and the direct consequences on the downstream processes in the mining work flow, including loading, hauling, crushing, milling and mineral concentration. This paper reviews and discusses a technique to achieve this objective, namely air-decking. The performance in a number of mines around the world is reviewed focusing on the economic contributions of air-deck blasting. Various scenarios are investigated and simulated, covering both conventional and air-deck blasting, using JKSimblast software. The scenarios explore a range of issues and found that optimum results could be achieved with a minimum amount of explosives. The results obtained from the simulations were verified with blasts at Rixs Creek Coal Mine, Australia. Based on the verification results the simulations were then modified to more accurately model the actual conditions and parameters on site and to ensure that the models derived meet the production and control requirements at the mine site. Ultimately, overall analysis and comparisons were applied to the outcomes of the conventional and air-decking blasts revealing a reduction in material consumption of around 25 per cent with consequential savings and up to a 30 per cent reduction in ground vibration.CITATION:Abdalla, M A, Laing, T and Hagan, P, 2012. In the fine particle flotation technologies being developed today the fine hydrophilic (gangue) particles are usually well dispersed. These highly dispersed fine particles can be recovered into the flotation froth product by mechanical entrainment. Flocculation of hydrophilic particles caused by polymer depressants could potentially reduce the mechanical entrainment of these particles. This paper reports testwork completed on fine particles of several solids, iron oxide, hydroxylapatite, galena and sphalerite, as well as on a relatively coarse quartz sample (-75+38 ¦m). Dodecylamine was used as a collector for the quartz, and several dispersants and polymer depressants, including sodium silicate, sodium metaphosphate, zinc sulfate, potassium dichromate, corn starch, corn dextrin and carboxymethyl celluloses (with molecular weights of both 700 000 and 80 000) were used as flotation modifiers. The major part of the testwork involved flotation tests in a 200 ml flotation column. Both water and solid recoveries were recorded. The degree of flocculation and dispersion was determined by settling tests in 250 ml graduated cylinders. It was observed that flocculation of the fine hydrophilic particles significantly reduced their mechanical entrainment, while dispersion severely aggravated it. Thus, in the flotation separation of artificial mixtures of the -75+38 ¦m quartz and fine iron oxide or hydroxylapatite, polymer depressants that caused flocculation were found to perform better than the ones that did not cause flocculation.

It has so far been a war of words and often the truth has been the first casualty. This paper looks at the debate and presents the perspective of Aboriginal people, as well as looking at how the industry and Aboriginal people can work together for everyone's benefit. It addresses such matters as: ò why Aboriginal people believe they have the right to control development on their land; ò the perception that Aboriginal people are anti-development; ò the perception that Aboriginal land is 'locked-up'; and ò how companies can negotiate with Aboriginal people.

The traditional engineering approach to assessing stability is based on comparing resisting force (capacity) to driving force (demand), or strength to working stress. In underground coal geomechanics, considerable effort has been expended on quantifying the strength of rock structures. However, this has not been matched by advances in determining the load acting on these structures, reflecting a reluctance by some to embrace numerical modelling to assess load magnitudes and distributions. Numerical modelling is a valuable aid as loading environments are a function of both the stiffness of the mine workings and the stiffness of the superincumbent strata and are statically indeterminate in most cases.This paper defines stiffness, which is often confused with elastic modulus. It shows that, effectively, stiffness encapsulates geology, depth of mining, panel width, pillar width and mining height. Therefore, these factors are variables that need to be taken into account when determining stress magnitudes and distributions about mine workings. A range of examples are presented that illustrate the significance of the stiffness of the superincumbent strata on surface subsidence; the magnitude and distribution of pillar and abutment load; and aspects of bord and pillar mining, pillar extraction and longwall mining. These examples provide bases for identifying the limitations of some empirical approaches to mine design, identifying how to compensate for some of these in design processes; and emphasising the need to make greater use of numerical modelling in understanding and quantifying loading environments in underground coal mining.CITATION:Galvin, J M, 2014. The field of astrometallurgy is a growing area of study. Metal production on the Moon is likely to begin in less than a decade as major space agencies such as NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and CNSA (China National Space Administration) are preparing to construct permanent lunar bases. The utilisation of regolith to generate oxygen and metals is expected to be important in the development of a sustainable lunar habitat. This paper provides an overview of potential metallurgical processing methods for lunar conditions, emphasising the impact of lunar factors on slag chemistry. The interaction between regolith and the extracted metals, as well as their impact on slag composition and refractory performance, are critical considerations in metal production on the lunar surface. The initial research on lunar metallurgical technologies is focused on oxygen extraction and Fe-Si alloys are reported as the by-products of these processes. This paper delves into the fundamental thermodynamics associated with the carbothermic reduction of lunar regolith. Thermodynamic analysis using the FactSage™ ver 8.2 software package indicates that the Fe-Si alloy can be produced as a metallic product from the lunar regolith at temperatures ranging from 1400°C to 1600°C under terrestrial conditions. However, under ultra-high vacuum conditions (3 × 10-15 bar) on the Moon, the required operating temperature for producing ferrosilicon would be significantly reduced. Thermodynamic modelling results indicate that under lunar vacuum conditions, Fe-Si alloys only exist as solid phases at lower temperatures below 650°C. At higher temperatures, both Fe and Si are expected to be present in the gas phase. In this work, the carbothermic reduction of the Lunar Mare Simulant (LMS-1) is conducted under terrestrial conditions. The findings indicate that the process can readily yield Fe-Si alloys with 7–10 wt per cent Si at 1600°C. Additionally, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the resulting Fe-Si alloy indicates the presence of phosphorus up to 1 wt per cent.

This paper discusses equipment replacement strategies and specifically addresses the upgrading of technologically superseded equipment. The process of equipment replacement evaluations is reviewed, and areas have been highlighted where currently accepted practice results in a bias towards retaining existing equipment longer than otherwise justified. The Discounted Average Cost Method is described and the advantages of the technique for this style of decision making discussed. Several key issues influencing the replacement evaluation are also presented together with examples from recent consulting work.

The Nena Cu-Au high sulphidation deposit has formed within the Frieda River Intrusive Complex in association with a major dilatant structure. Multiple intermediate intrusives of Miocene age are localised by a splay (Frieda Fault) of the Fiak-Leonard-Schultz Thrust, a several hundred kilometre long structure, formed parallel to the accretionary prism of northern Papua New Guinea.The high sulphidation systems including Nena, crop out as narrow silica-alunite ridges extending for up to 5-6km in length within a dilational structural environment. Alteration at Mena exhibits two phases of hydro-thermal activity: an initial stage, inferred to be volatile-rich, which has produced zoned alteration; and a later phase, postulated to have been a liquid-dominated fluid, which has brecciated earlier alteration zones and deposited gangue phases as well as Cu/Au-bearinq sulphides in open spaces.

The continuously growing demand for rare earth elements (REEs), in combination with the crisis of 2009 and the price spike of 2011, has initiated a treasure hunt for rare earth deposits all over the world in recent years. Since then, commodity prices have declined and are now quite stable, yet the world is still dependent on China’s dominance of the market and its export policies. Exploration is unremitting and numerous resources of potential interest have already been revealed in many countries; however, proceeding to mining operations is not that simple, especially when it comes to the exploitation of rare earth deposits. Evaluating the feasibility of a mining project is always a unique, sensitive and rather complex process that depends on multiple criteria.This paper focuses on clarifying the present and future global situation in the development of respective deposits and on identifying rare earth-specific criteria that influence the overall feasibility assessments of any potential (especially underground) mining projects. Environmental impacts, legislation issues and the presence of radioactive pollutants are some of the notable boundary conditions that govern rare earth mining operations and need to be taken into consideration. Furthermore, the balance problem between the supply and demand of the different REEs can determine decisively whether a deposit of specific REEs is economically exploitable. For this reason, evaluations are made regarding the future strategies to be enacted in order for the rest of the world to detach itself from this situation. The high intensity zone within the Jameson Cell is the downcomer. It is largely external and separated from the flotation tank. This, together with operation of the downcomer under vacuum, rather than at elevated pressure and the absence of moving parts, allows ready access to the high intensity zone for measurement and analysis. Experimentation was conducted allowing measurements of recovery for residence times of between 20 milliseconds and ten seconds within the downcomer of a Jameson Cell. The affect of aeration rate on the recovery of different particle sizes was also studied.

Bauxite residue or ‘red mud’ is a by-product of the Bayer Process, the primary process of alumina refining. Due to its high alkalinity and variable composition, its storage and disposal poses high environmental risks to water sources, surrounding ecosystems and human health. The high alkalinity (pH 12–13) is a significant factor in its classification as hazardous waste; to mitigate this, Australian refineries have integrated neutralisation processes into bauxite refining. Both sea water and carbon dioxide neutralisation processes are applicable. Multiple studies have demonstrated pH reduction from 12–13 to 7–10, depending on the method. The key advantages of CO2 neutralisation are that it allows for carbon sequestration and is more effective when utilised as a pre-treatment for recovery of metals, while sea water neutralisation is more established and has been integrated into two Australian refineries. This paper proposes the application of the bacteria Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans for bioleaching of iron from hematite in bauxite residue. The genus Exiguobacterium is characterised by its high levels of adaptability, halotolerance and alkaliphilic nature. E. oxidotolerans is successful at eluting Fe2+ from hematite via reductive dissolution, which complexes with oxalic acid produced during metabolism. This aquatic bacterium presents a novel process pathway for iron elution due to direct interaction of E. oxidotolerans with hematite via the cell membrane and operates within the pH range of neutralised red mud. The proposed mechanism is extracellular electron transfer, a microbial metabolic process where electron transfer is facilitated between bacterial cells and extracellular material. Currently this is being investigated for promotion of seaweed growth in coastal environments as soluble iron aids and fortifies colonies. This has potential downstream applications for cleaner iron and steel production. While theoretical, this paper explores the neutralisation, bioleaching and application of the Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxalate complexes formed.

The Hauraki Goldfield consists of a large number of volcanic-associated epithermal gold deposits within the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), North Island , New Zealand; it is the most accessible and most studied of the Southwest Pacific gold regions. The deposits occur generally as steeply dipping quartz veins and breccia sheets in faults and fractures.From a tectonic perspective, the CVZ is generally considered a Neogene convergent volcanic arc constructed under an extensional tectonic regime; the common tectonic setting for epithermal mineralisation. The gold deposits are mostly hosted in subaerial andesitic arc-type volcanic rocks. Temporally, however, mineralisation is associated with rhyolitic rocks of a bimodal volcanic suite that may represent a back-arc environment. Rifting and calderas may be important components of the latter regime, but this is not yet clear; the general structural framework controlling the location of CVZ gold deposits remains poorly understood. The potential for iron ore in the Central African Archean belts has received much less attention by comparison to their equivalents in other cratonic regions of West Africa, South Africa, Australia and Brazil. Historically, iron ore is known to occur in South Cameroon and North Gabon with significant iron ore deposits (eg Mbalam in Cameroon, Avima in the Republic of Congo, Minkébé, Bélinga and Boka-boka in Gabon), having been the subject of geological exploration programs carried out by government institutions and exploration companies. Although the presence of strong aeromagnetic anomalies, undeniably related to the presence of greenstone belt formations, has been recognised, this study is the first attempt to assess the potential of banded iron formations (BIF) in the Northern part of the Gabonese Republic in the region between Minvoul and Minkébé (>10.000 km2). Deep lateritic weathering, inaccessible equatorial rain forest and high operational costs are some of the reasons why only limited exploration has been undertaken in the area. This work aims to improve the geological knowledge and to highlight the potential for iron ore of the eastern margin of the Ntem Complex units dated between 3.3–2.7 Ga. Field work showed a series of mafic rocks (amphibolite, anorthosite and gabbro), schist and BIF (described as itabirites in neighbouring areas). Samples from Minvoul BIF showed an extensive and deep weathering to powdery hematite revealing the presence, in thin sections, of iron oxides including magnetite, hematite and martite, primary and secondary quartz, garnet, hornblende, anthophyllite, cummingtonite and epidote. Mineral assemblages and coarse grain size suggest a metamorphic grade ranging from medium to upper amphibolite facies. The existence of known economic iron ore deposits in neighbouring regions combined with an extensive weathering enrichment process are promising factors for potential iron ore discovery in this remote area.

Mine planning is a crucial part of all mining industry projects, and nowadays, geometallurgical mapping through advanced computer technologies provides an opportunity to involve metallurgical responses of a deposit into 3D block model in order to optimise mine planning activities, especially for production forecasting. Including these metallurgical parameters apart from traditional geology and grade-based attributes into resource modelling leads to an extensive approximation for the economic maximisation of mine production due to better forecasting, planning and increasing certainty and the reliability of the resource model (Macfarlane and Williams, 2014). Commonly, geostatistical techniques and algorithms are used to produce models with the high resolution (Brissette et al. 2014; Deutsch et al. 2014; Tolosana-Delgado et al. 2015). The accuracy of the modelling procedure deeply depends on a reliable block model, produced by spatial analysis of corresponding variables that define the geological, metallurgical, mineralogical and chemical behaviour of the deposit. However, there are special cases, where the application of enhanced geostatistical methods is required, to solve the occurred difficulties between variables with multivariate complexities. For example, in oxide copper deposits, the soluble copper grade is a percentage of total copper grade and recoverable by heap leaching processes (Emery, 2012; Hosseini and Asghari, 2015). "The precise formulation of a geometallurgical optimisation problem is by necessity a simplification of reality. It includes implicit choices such as data availability or mining block geometry. Additional data can be orebody data, production data or market data. Often these choices are predetermined by the software, the workflow or the corporate culture, and as such are not even queried. There are several aspects that might play a role in the optimisation. They include not only the spatial model on which the selection of mining blocks and the potential mining sequence are based, but also the complexity of the processing model, the way in which uncertainty is treated, the scope of responsibility and the complexity of the model. In addition the timing of the optimisation and the availability (or lack thereof) of information will influence the outcome of any optimisation.We show that different modelling choices and different model formulations for the same mine can lead to very different processing choices, substantially different net present values (NPV), opposite investment decisions and so to overall different values for the entire operation. The selection of adequate simplifications and corresponding formulations for the optimisation problem is thus an important task in itself.For this purpose we introduce a method for quantifying the impact of certain simplifications prior to the optimisation. For example, the effect of mining block choices depends mainly on the spatial structure and the structure of the processing gain function. Both can be quantified beforehand. The cover (cap) over the tailings pit at Nabarlek uranium mine must be structurally stable as it will act as a barrier to radon gas emission and have to contain other long-lived radionuclides. Structural stability is primarily an issue of erosional stability in the context of a design life of thousands of years. The primary agent of erosion is fluvial, dominated by rainwash, overland flow, filling and gullying in the local area. Other agents of erosion are of less concern although biogenic agents of erosion (eg termites and windthrow) may enhance fluvial activity. Several methods may be used to assess erosional stability. They fall into two main categories, namely erosion modelling and geomorphic modelling. The former is illustrated by the Universal Soil Loss Equation in which parameters describing aspects of the geotechnical and hydrological properties of the rehabilitated surface are used as input for the modelling of erosion rates. The latter is illustrated by estimates of gully and valley erosion using empirical models. Estimates of the erosion rates and stability of the Nabarlek cover are presented. The two main techniques are complementary and it is argued that rehabilitation design must make use of both approaches when estimating erosion and geomorphic stability. More recent developments in geomorphic modelling using numerical techniques incorporate both approaches.

the German ruining industry uses different residues for hackfilling and stowing. A hydraulic pipe conveying technology for these materials has shown advantages for the transportation into the mine. Pipeline conveying systems are able to bridge long distances, they save room within the underground workings and they save staff and costs. Absolutely necessary for successful use of the hydraulic conveying technology is the knowledge about the unusual non-Newtonian flow properties of solid/liquid mixtures like pastes and slurries. The flow resistance of these materials cannot be described easily by one viscosity. Owing to a yield point and a pseudo-plastic behaviour the viscosity changes with the shear rate and with the streaming velocity inside the pipe. Also these flow behaviours depend very sensitively on the liquid/solid-ratio, often so dramatically that gravimetric or volumetric dosing equipment is not in a position to control the production of backfill pastes. Quality changes of the solid raw materials (particle size distribution, density, mineralogical composition) lead to additional difficulties. The first experiences with hydraulic backfilling plants were troubled by plugged pipes. a bad backfill quality caused by unnecessarily high water content and high costs for chemical binders to solidify the backfill. The installation of viscosity controlled paste production leads to success with the hydraulic backfill technology. A development of the l)MT, a bypass pipe-viscometer, has been the key technology. The system is able to analyse on-line, difficult, sticky and abrasive substances and determine their non-Newtonian flow properties. Because the system measures real physical values it is in a position to pre-calculate process relevant parameters like the pressure drop of the backfilling paste in the conveying pipeline. Newer types of the viscometer system also measure the slurry density and calculate its composition. These systems have proven a success controlling backfill paste production plants. They offer it secure prevention of pipeline plugging and a production of high quality backfill pastes with a water content as low as possible.

Flash flotation plays an integral role in many of the gold and sulfide mineral concentrators around the world, and yet despite this widespread use, very little information on this unit process is available in the published literature. For operations to maximise the performance of their flash flotation circuits, understanding how these cells operate, the nature of the particles they target and how to predict whether a flash flotation cell should be used on a specific ore type is of vital importance. This paper provides a summary of the key findings of a large flash flotation research project based in the operating environment of a refractory gold concentrator. The influence of key flotation performance criteria including gas dispersion, residence time and particle segregation within the cell will be discussed and recommendations for process improvements will be made throughout. The nature of the particles within the flash cell will be examined, as will the impact on the type of particles that are passed to downstream processes when the flash flotation cell is taken off-line. The iron ore products should be assessed in terms of in-furnace behaviour and overall furnace performance, their operation should also be optimised under industry-scale blast furnace (BF) conditions, in order to be sustainable and competitive, especially in the context of decarbonisation efforts in ironmaking. While lab and pilot-scale experiments can provide useful kinetics, they are expensive and risky and cannot replicate industry-scale blast furnace conditions for proper assessment and optimisation. In this paper, we review our recent progress at Shen Lab of UNSW in using state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to assess iron ore products and examine the effects of their operations on BF behaviour in basic terms, including in-furnace phenomena (flow field, temperature field, species distribution fields etc) and overall BF performance (coke rate, reduction efficiency and top gas temperature etc). We have developed state-of-the-edge CFD models for different purposes, ranging from the static-state BF model featuring unique layered burden structures for offline assessment and optimisation knowledge building-up for iron ore products, to the transient-state BF model for online assessment and optimisation of iron ore productions by describing the transient behaviours of iron ore productions under industry-scale conditions. First, we have studied several iron ore products including the iron ore products used in the present BFs and emerging iron ore products like carbon composite briquette and iron-coke. Second, several iron ore operations are studied including optimisation of conventional burden operations like oxygen enrichment, batch weight tuning and new operations like coke central charging and hydrogen injection in BFs. Third, some time-sensitive operations are also investigated including the use of wet burden materials and the drop in blast temperature on BF performance. These CFD models offer cost-effective research tools for understanding the effect of iron ore products on BF performance and serve as a reliable marketing tool for existing and emerging iron ore products under a wide range of BF conditions.

Brand se Baai, on the North-Western Cape Coastline of Southern Africa, is the site of the Namakwa Sands Limited Heavy Mineral Sands Mining Operation. The mine is a 14 000 000 tonnes per annum open-cast strip-style mining operation using truck and excavators to mine the sand. The orebody consists of relatively unconsolidated sands reworked by fluvial, marine and aeolian mechanisms. The total orebody includes three primary ore types, namely the Red Aeolian Sands, the Dorbank (a hardcap layer) and the Orange Feldspathic Sands, which forms the bulk of the resource. Mine planning and scheduling is done using a 50 m + 50 m variable bench height system with three primary bench heights. The Aeolian and Dorbank each have a bench that varies with their thickness of up to a maximum eight metres and the Orange feldspathic sand, a standard bench height of eight metres. For a number of years Namakwa Sands used a complex 2D, Datamine Based, macro system to perform the resource evaluation and mine design. As the mining operations expanded it became clear that a complete system redesign was required to cope with the increasing operational pressures coming to bear on the old system. The biggest challenges facing any replacement system are the sheer scale of the mining operation (16 km long and 7 km wide resulting in a minimum of 30 000 individual 50 m + 50 m mining blocks), the size of the geological data files (up to one gigabyte) and representing the benching system accurately (as the benches follow the topography and are not horizontal). In addition to these large-scale issues, the ability to run multiple mine design scenarios was required, an aspect which the old system was unable to perform adequately. Based upon these primary difficulties, a new business process was developed which required a complete rethink of the mine design methodology as well as the creation of a new system to deplete the resource model, produce monthly reconciliation evaluations and create a ultimate pit limit based on the operations mining cost model. Using a system based on the Earthworks Mine2-4D Mine Design and Scheduling System (with its mine design and scheduling specific tools), as well as a small, customised program, massive time-savings have been made. It is now possible to run several life of mine scenarios in the same timeframe that a single life of mine run took under the old system. This paper will present the methodology and business decisions behind the new Namakwa Sands system, and detail the restructuring and development used to deal with the large data set sizes and long processing times inherent in the old system. Future enhancements to the system that will make it more generically applicable to open-cast mining scenarios will also be dealt with.
