This evening I intend to explain the position of the gold mining industry in the light of post war trends and events.I propose initially to comment on gold production throughout the World and then proceed to the state of the industry in Australia, with an account of the efforts made within the industry to maintain levels of production. Throughout history, many of the world's achievements, conflicts and problems can be traced to the demand for minerals. With the rapid expansion of our industrialised society in recent years the demand for minerals has grown to such an extent that uncertainties about availability and cost have arisen, especially in the case of energy minerals.Minerals have acquired a new dimension for governments as the availability of these resources is interwoven with the ability of governments to achieve their developmental goals on national and international levels. Accordingly, the supply of minerals will increasingly be affected by social and political factors.

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.

At the end of the recent war, reports became available from Europe of the use of tungsten-carbide inserts in percussion rockdrill bits. These bits were used with small size rockdrills, so that the only advantage gained from the use of the harder, abrasion resistant, tungsten-carbide appears to have been the greater life of the bit. Larger machines, such as used in Australia in conventional practice, had to be discarded to protect the relatively brittle tungstencarbide inserts and the vulnerable bonding with the bit body.As it had been found in machine shop practice that some grades of tungsten-carbide had been produced with considerably improved toughness, it was decided by Gold Mines of Australia Ltd. that drilling practice with tungstencarbide bits warranted detailed examination under Australian conditions, and that drilling tests should be undertaken at Morning Star (G.M.A.) Mines N.L., for which it acts as General Manager and Consultant.These investigations progressed through three stages:1. Preliminary Investigations and Tests.When the investigations were initiated no commercial bits were available in Australia, and manufacture was commenced with improvised equipment from virtual scratch. The author summarizes and extends the relevant results of papers previously published by various authors and presents these results in chart form. The charts are used to demonstrate the theory on a hypothetical mine.INTRODUCTIONRecently a series of articles have dealt with leakage in a mine ventilation system and the problem of its reduction.Theories were developed by Peascod and Keane (1955) for the combined effect of flow in the airways and leakage through the porous barrier between the intake and return of an ideal mine. Later Keane and Peascoa. (1956) extended these ideas to the use of an underground booster fan in increasing the face ventilation and showed how to determine the water gauge and location of the most efficient underground fan.These articles were based on the assumption that Atkin:son's formula:P = R Q2 (1)gave the relation between the pressure drop P lb'/sq. ft., the quantity, Q kilocusecs, flowing in the mine airways and the total resistance, R Atkinsons, to air flow offered by the mine roadway. An Atkinson is defined as a resistance such that 1 kilocusec of air flows due to a pressure drop of 1Ib.jsq. ft. However for conditions prevailing in most mines a more :appropriate relation is that postulated by Reynolds and others (Lamb, 1953) :P=R Qn (2)where n has some value slightly less than 2. It should be noted that Atkinsons may not be used as units when n is not equal to 2.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

The mineral composition and microtextures of a cubanite-rich sulphide ore are described and cubanite breakdown textures are illustrated. The occurrence of cubanite in macroscopic dimensions is featured.The origin of the ore is tentatively related to a composite ore fluid arising initially from an ultramalic source and extracting some metal components from an older granite mass along the margin of which the serpentine was emplaced. Some alternative possibilities as to origin are also mentioned.

The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years.Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the IIIawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out.The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45 per cent and 60 per cent (mineral matter free).Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. Coke strength indices increased with rank, and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal.Use of petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved.Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilized to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

The spatial and temporal evolution from the porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal environment can be assessed by integrating new results on such deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Hedenquist et al, 1998) with past studies of plutonic and porphyry systems (Dilles and Proffett, 1995; Cline, 1995; Shinohara and Hedenquist, 1997; Hedenquist and Richards, 1998). Some time ago, Sillitoe (1973) argued for the nature of the tops and bottoms of porphyry deposits. He concluded that epithermal deposits may form over the tops of some porphyry systems. We can now conclude more confidently what the tops and bottoms of many high-sulphidation ore deposits appeared like while active (Arribas, 1995; Hedenquist, 1995). In addition, we better understand the nature of the zonation of high-sulphidation epithermal systems from the intrusive to surficial environment (Sillitoe, 1999), and how these two styles of ore deposit are related. Geological and geochemical evidence clearly indicates a continuum between these two ore environments. This improved understanding of genesis allows more efficient exploration for these deposits. There are many examples of spatially associated porphyry and epithermal ore deposits. A genetic connection has been suggested by some, and argued against by others. Nowhere is this spatial association better seen than in northern Luzon, Philippines, where the Lepanto high-sulphidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit overlies the Far Southeast (FSE) porphyry Cu-Au resource (Figure 1). Together these mineralised bodies contain a resource of >3.8 M tonnes Cu and >550 tonnes Au. Lepanto was largely mined out in early-1997. Post-war production until 1995 was 0.73 Mt Cu, 115 t Au and 393 t Ag at an average grade of 2.2 per cent Cu, 3.5 g/t Au and 11 g/t Ag. The recent discovery of the adjacent Victoria low-sulphidation quartz-Au-base metal vein deposit, with a resource of >68 tonnes Au (Cuison et al, 1998), illustrates the variety and abundance of mineralisation in the Mankayan district. This district also hosts the Guinaoang porphyry Cu-Au deposit (Sillitoe and Angeles, 1985) and other epithermal vein occurrences (Figure 1). This brief summary reviews the results recently published on the Lepanto-FSE deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Mancano and Campbell, 1995; Claveria, 1998; Hedenquist et al, 1998), and stresses the evidence for coupling of mineralisation between the porphyry and high-sulphidation epithermal environments.

Sensor-based ore sorting is being increasingly used to reduce the amount of low-grade and waste material processed in mineral concentrators. This type of preconcentration provides bottom-line benefits to users by reducing the amount of energy, water and consumables, as well as reducing capital cost. Existing operations can increase metal production, while previously uneconomic deposits and low-grade stockpiles can also be exploited. The technology can also be used to separate ore types for selective processing. The path to implementing sensor-based sorting may include:• geometallurgical evaluation• first inspection testing to investigate sensor response• bench-scale testing where sensor selection is not obvious or for difficult applications• performance testing in full scale sensor-based sorting machines• larger scale site-based piloting with a temporary semi-mobile plant installation. Sorting requires material to be suitably prepared and presented to the machines and typically this consists of crushing and screening to limit top size and optimise liberation. However, where material streams are suitably sized and prepared, additional equipment may not be required (e.g. the sorting of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Mill pebble streams).This paper presents a case study of economic upgrading of gold ore, by preconcentrating with sensor-based ore sorting. The case study examines sorting amenability, test work, the feasibility study through to implementation, with associated flow sheet development. The development process is analysed and evaluated with a view to rationalising the process for development of future projects. As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

This paper gives a description of the methods of mining employed at North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W.GEOLOGICAL NOTESThe main Broken Hill lode occurs as a replacement of tightly folded pre-Cambrian sediments. Replacement has followed certain stratigraphical horizons and the main bulk of the ore is found where these have been packed into the noses of anticlinal and synclinal folds.Throughout the mine the ore-bearing folds pitch north fairly consistently at 45 degrees, as a result of which two favourable horizons in the same fold appear in plan as separate orebodies and these are referred to as the "Southern Orebody" and the "Northern Orebody" respectively.The general dip of the orebodies to the west is about 60 degrees. A typical sill is shown in the plan of the 1,400-ft level (Fig. 1).Both the hanging wall and footwall rocks throughout the mine are weak and, as a result, it is necessary that the hanging wall must be well supported after ore extraction, to prevent subsidence. The weakness in the footwall is confined to a narrow zone, approximately 60 feet in width. The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

"The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Simulating the location of clay pods followed by CCS of assay variables is the recommended approach for simulation at the Yandi CID.CITATION:De-Vitry, C, 2013. All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.

The Bulli Seam, New South Wales, comprises medium to low volatile bituminous coal, generally of coking quality. It is worked over an area embracing 300 square miles.Variations in several factors are found.1. The seam is somewhat disturbed and dissected by various structural features.2. This structure, and present topography, have resulted in depths of cover from very shallow to approaching 2,000 ft in the presently worked areas.3. Wide variations of seam thickness occur.4. Gradations of rank occur from place to place.5. Variations in seam gas content and wide variations in seam gas composition are experienced.6. Variations in coal strength occur.These factors may contribute to the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena in mining exploitation.INTRODUCTIONThe Bulli Seam, the most extensively worked seam in Australia, is the uppermost seam of the Illawarra Coal Measures, which comprise the southern portion of the Sydney Coal Basin. Generally, the rank of the seam and its assemblage of types make it ideal for the production of hard metallurgical coke. The thickness and relatively flat dips render the seam suited to mechanized bord and pillar mining, and this method is used almost without exception. At the north-eastern corner of the field, stress and gas phenomena have occurred during mining.Various data have been assembled on physical, chemical and geological conditions of the seam which may influence the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena. This material is presented in an attempt to explain the location of such phenomena to date, and to enable variations in conditions to be considered when future possibilities are being assessed.

Longwall mining and related subsidence, and watercourse diversion for surface mining operations have the potential to impact on fluvial geomorphic processes and the health of river systems. This is evident in the Isaac River in central Queensland. The scale and likelihood of these impacts are a function of the extent of existing and proposed mining developments and of the ongoing geomorphic, hydrologic and ecological processes within the Isaac River. Understanding the objectives for the river, the past and ongoing processes at work, the cumulative impacts of longwall mining development and the options for managing those impacts is essential for the development of an effective strategy to manage the health of the river system. An assessment has been undertaken to identify and understand the cumulative impacts of mining subsidence and other mining influences on geomorphic processes and waterway health in the Isaac River over a river length of approximately 100 km near Moranbah in central Queensland. The assessment included the development of a vision and objectives for waterway health. The assessment has identified mining and landuse changes that have impacted on the hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and hence the health of the Isaac River. The assessment has then sought to identify the cumulative impact of longwall mining and related subsidence on current stream condition and the proposed vision for the system. The primary impact of longwall mining on the river was found to be associated with sediment transport. The investigation included assess- ment of total sand available for transport, the volume of sand transported annually and the fluvial process response to subsidence. Recommendations have been developed for the management of the system and for longwall mining to increase system robustness and achieve the river health objectives.
