In 2002 the Argyle Diamond Mine upgraded the process plantÆs recrush circuit to include a High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR), or High Pressure Rolls Crushers (HPRC) as they are termed in the diamond industry. HPGR have generated considerable interest over the last decade, though there are still technical/processing unknowns to its effectiveness as a primary diamond ore crusher.The upgrade of the Recrush circuit at Argyle Diamonds has gone a long way to answering some of the key questions, and thus it has reduced the unknowns to a level more acceptable to the industry.This paper focuses on the results from the HPRC at Argyle, in particular the performance of the studded wear surfaces, comparison of energy efficiency against traditional quaternary cone crushers and the resultant increased liberation. Issues that have arisen, including edge wear of the studded surfaces, will be discussed and the steps taken to reduce this issue are presented.

This paper uses computer modelling tech- niques to compare and contrast anomaly patterns obtained with fluxgate (vertical field) and proton precession (total field) magnetometers at typical latitudes in northern and southern Australia. The use of these modelling tech- niques is suggested as an aid to magnetic interpretation and field examples are included from Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

The Woodcutters deposit, 65 km south- southeast of Darwin, N.T., consists of a series of veins of pyrite, sphalerite, and galena with some silver, cadmium, antimony, and arsenic minerals. The veins are hosted by the Early Proterozoic Whites Formation, a sequence of black slates with interbedded carbonate rocks and minor ash tuffs. The known orebodies occur about 300 to 500 metres above the contact of Whites Formation with the underlying Coomalie Dolomite, which consists of dolomite and magne- site. The stratigraphic setting is lithologic- ally similar to that of the Mt. Isa deposit, Queensland. The orebodies are replacement veins occ- urring along fault and dyke structures which are sub-parallel to the axes of a double-nosed faulted anticline. The orebodies are in part associated with two unusual carbonatized lam- prophyric dykes. The dykes were intruded after the fold and its slaty cleavage were formed. The ore has replaced the dykes and host rocks and is therefore late-stage hydrothermal miner- alization. The known orebodies are open at depth. A "bonanza" of high-grade ore occurs at the upper part of the largest orebody and is currently the subject of an open cut mine planning study by a consortium of companies headed by Nicron Resources Ltd.

A broker relies heavily on mineral valuations and independent experts' reports to provide the fundamental information, both technical and commercial, which provides the basis of estimating the sharemarket value of securities and underlying assets. It is important to appreciate the significant variance that can occur between the market value and other types of valuation at a particular point in time. In general, most experts' reports and valuations seek to provide estimates of technical/fundamental or ""fair"" value which correspond to the Corporations Law and accounting standards requirements. They do not usually attempt to estimate (stock) market values and it is usually and quite correctly the broker's task to estimate market values on the basis of a technical appraisal and consideration of all other commercial, market and financial influences. Therefore ideally, an independent experts' report or information memorandum will include material relating to commercial and management aspects of a company as well as detailed technical reviews and fundamental valuations. Wherever sensible cash flow projections can be made, cash flow-derived valuations, usually based on discounted cash flow (DCF) calculations, remain the preferred valuation methodology. Brokers in general would not argue with this preference. However, there is a paucity of examples of valuations where alternative methods are applied as a check on the reasonableness of a DCF-based estimate.

This paper examines the impact of the time value of money on the location of mining facilities, as examplified by a central processing plant serving several mines. Three approaches, the Euclidean-Distance Approach, the Gravity Centre Approach, and the Rectilinear-Distance Approach, commonly applied to a single facility location problem were employed in the study. The objective function in all three models was the updated value of the following three costs influenced by the processing plant location and defined within the framework of the continuous model of value representation and the continuous interest rate convention: I. the costs of transporting the useful mineral from the mines to the plant, 2. the costs of constructing the transportation links between the mines and the plant, and 3. the costs of maintaining these links over time. Results of the study show a substantial impact of the time value of money on both the processing plant optimal location and the opportunity cost of neglecting the time value of money in the locational considerations.

Western Mining Corporation, managing partner of the Windarra Nickel Project are in- stalling a raise-bored haulage shaft and under- ground crushing system at the Mt. Windarra Nickel Mine. The system will be the second of its type installed by W.M.C., the first being in- stalled at the Otter-Juan mine in Kambalda in 1976/77. Both haulage systems became necessary as a result of the increasing production limi- tations, and escalating costs of a deep decline mine. The Windarra haulage system required a single 3m diameter vertical raise drill hole to a depth of 470 metres. Two five tonne skips in balance will hoist crushed ore and mullock to the surface, at a design rate of 200 tonnes per hour, effectively reducing truck haulage leads by up to 50%. It is expected the project will be in full operation by mid 1982 and will enable the mine to achieve an annual production rate of 600,000 t.p.a. by 1983.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.

Woodcutters is a polymetallic vein-style deposit hosted by sediments of the Palacoproterozoic Whites Formation which forms part of the sedimentary sequence in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. Past production and identified resources total over eight million tonnes at 5.5 per cent lead, 12.1 per cent zinc and 110 gA silver. The local geology is influenced by Archaean basement highs; the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes. Unconformably overlying basement are interbedded clastic and crystalline carbonate units (Batchelor Group) representing cyclic changes in the depositional environment. These exhibit onlapping features with the underlying rocks. Sediments of the overlying Frances Creek Group suggest a quiet period during subsidence and subsequent increase in water depth (the carbonaceous dolomitic shales and the interbedded dololutites of the Whites Formation) followed by proximal uplift resulting in the inundation of turbiditic flows (Acacia Gap Quartzite). All of the Palaeoproterozoic rocks show evidence of being affected by penecontemporaneous, basement circling faults with steep dips. The stress regime during the deposition of the Frances Creek Group was characterised by alternating episodes of thrusting and transpression. Periods of relaxation also occurred. The compression resulted in major NS strike-slip (transpressional) faulting, en-echelon NNE trending folds and NW-SE tensional cross faults. Thrusting produced N-S striking, steep dipping reverse faults and a possible decollement immediately above the Batchelor Group. Relaxation is evidenced by the intrusion of lamprophyre dykes and dolerite sills (Zamu Dolerite). Mineralisation at Woodcutters occurred in faults within the Whites Formation, probably synchronous with deformation and the deposition of the upper parts of the Frances Creek Group. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred as the rocks were further buried. Several massive sulphide bodies occur at Woodcutters. A number of features influence the location and shape of these bodies. They are: ò the N-S transpressional faults and in particular associated dilation zones; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the axial plane of the NNE trending Woodcutters Anticline; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the NW-SE cross-faults; ò intersection of dololutite rich units with the NS transpressional faults where local replacement takes place; ò thickening of the lithological units in the vicinity of the anticlinal axis; and ò the anticline doubly plunging to both the north and south. The mineralisation exhibits vein-like features as well as epigenetic textures. Its boundaries are sharp, its thickness varies rapidly down dip and along strike, and no alteration halo exists though stringer veins of quartz-carbonate-pyrite ¦ sphalerite/galena occur in close proximity. A number of sulphide mineral assemblages have been recognised, each separated by periods of deformation and partially replacing the earlier assemblages. Vertically continuous zonation patterns highlight the presence of rich galena-sphalerite-silver in zones of maximum dilation and pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold concentrated at the along strike peripheries. The genetic model proposed has the mineralisation occurring whilst the transpressional regime was active. It was deposited from the same fluid that elsewhere in the Geosyncline formed the stratiform deposits higher in the sedimentary pile. Hydrocarbons sourced from the organic-rich Whites

The Lady Loretta silver-lead-zinc deposit lies north of Mount Isa in folded and faulted Proterozoic carbonate sediments. The deposit was discovered in the late 1960's as a result of a soil geochemical survey. Subsequent surface drilling outlined mineralisation folded into a synclinal structure extending to a depth of 460 m and containing exceptionally high grades within the keel of the syncline. Pancontinental Mining Limited and Outokumpu Oy of Finland acquired the property in 1985.

The economic feasibility of controlled district cross-cut recirculation is examined in this paper with particular reference to the most important mine ventilation network parameters. An algorithm is developed to express the annual cost of recirculation which is then compared to the annual cost of conventional ventilation using the University of Queensland Experimental Mine as a case study. The concepts of resistance ratio and volumetric efficiency ratio are introduced and used to analyse the economic feasibility of controlled recirculation within a mine ventilation network.

Magnetic scanning type mass spectrometers have been given improved sensitivity with a large dynamic range and considerable resolution by the addition of a computer-controlled electric equipment. A mass spectrometer equipped with this newly developed electric system was applied to studies of the activities of liquid iron-silicon alloys and of liquid iron-phosphorus alloys at 1600¦C. The range of silicon concentration was 5.8at%-51.1 Si= at%, and values of ySi -3.1+0.15 and es 11.5 +1.5 were obtained. The concentration range of phosphorus was 1.3at%-5.7at% and a value of eP=7.3+0.1 was obtained.

There are serious problems in forecast- ing accurately and achieving this goal depends on good quality information, correct assumpt- ions and sound analysis. planner. The forecaster must focus attention on a number of key areas of interest. These areas include major economic trends and changing GNP structure, consumption time series, end-use consumption patterns and substitution potential, accurately updating data bases (up to 5 years ahead), random factor estimation and examination of both long term and secondary mine potential. While metal price forecasting has suffered due to recent uncertainties, with increased importance on planning tools and cost analyses, it is still a necessary function. Forecasting is subject to the real world and the metal industry is made up of imperfect markets in a dynamic state. The real world provides the challenge to improve the accuracy of forecasting.

The Lower Proterozoic metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline form a chrono- stratigraphic sequence of mainly greenschist- and amphibolite-grade shallow-marine to supratidal pelites, psammites, carbonate rocks, and volcaniclastics which in places rests unconformably on Archaean basement. Granite and later dolerite intrude the sequence, and are associated with the major orogenic 1800-m.y. event which regionally metamorphosed the sediments. Most mineralisation is stratabound, and can be related at least partly to volcanic activity. Uranium mineralisation is mainly confined to particular carbonate-rich horizons near basement. Other metals are mainly in small hydrothermal deposits near intrusive granite. Specialist studies indicate that uranium was leached from its source rock, and probably carried as carbonate complexes in highly saline fluids at between 100 and 3500 C. Precipitation took place by redox reactions in breccia zones in carbonate rocks; these zones were formed by carbonate solution or diapiric movement of evaporites which preceded the carbonate. Extensive chloritisation in the ore zones suggests metasomatism by Fe- and Mg-rich fluids which may have evolved during dewatering of the evaporites. The microstructures exhibited by ilmenite in its association with other oxide minerals have been the subject of a number of papers, the most comprehensive of which is that by Ramdohr. The following observations in some degree extend his conclusions. They are based upon a study of about sixty specimens of "massive" ilmenite and titaniferous ores from a number of wIdely 'scattered Australian localities. Specimens of this character proved much rarer than was expected. The collection was gathered together through the generous aid of the University Geological Departments, Geological Surveys, and Natural History Museums of the several States of the Commonwealth, all of which contributed such specimens of local origin, as they possessed. The Granites Goldfield is located 550 km northwest of Alice Springs. Mineralisation was discovered in 1900 and intermittently worked along nine km of strike until the early 1950's, yielding a recorded production of 470 kg of gold. The geological environ- ment, pre-existing exploration drilling results, and an optimistic view on gold, prompted acquisition of the property by North Flinders Mines Limited in 1975. An agreement was signed with the Central Land Council in August 1983 and drilling commenced in the same month. In the past, gold was won from alluvial deposits, rich quartz veins and lower grade, disseminated stratabound mineralisation. The last is contained within a distinctive unit in the Mt. Charles Beds, of the Early Proterozoic Tanami Complex. This informally named "Host Unit" is a metamorphosed, chemical- pelitic sediment. The schist contains variable proportions of amphibole, quartz, garnet, clinopyroxene, carbonate and sulphide, inter- calated with recrystallised chert beds. Free gold occurs in several mineralised horizons within the Host Unit, generally conformably distributed within lithologic bands or at lithologic contacts. The Host Unit occurs within a sequence of metamorphosed pelitic sediments and intermediate volcanics. Although mostly confined to the Host Unit, stratabound gold mineralisation also exists in both Footwall and Hanging Wall Schists, usually within zones displaying certain Host Unit characteristics. The deposits may be loosely categorised as being of banded iron formation (bif) type, although some important differences are noted between them and classical bif type orebodies.

High methane content of the medium volatile metallurgical coal mined from the Coal Basin mines causes very difficult mining conditions. Rapid desorption into the mine ventilation system limits coal production, requires huge fresh air quantities and creates mine safety problems. In workings deeper than 2000 ft (600m) gassy coal and heavy cover create outbursting conditions. Cross-measure methane drainage has reduced ventilation requirements on advancing faces, but degasifica- tion of virgin coal is needed to improve mining Conditions.

This paper reviews the issues of mining machinery automation with special emphasis on underground applications. Automation is desirable because it offers the following advantages: ò increased safety by reducing human exposure to hazards of underground mining; ò higher productivity; and ò reduced wear of equipment. In spite of these advantages and in spite of numerous attempts over the past several decades, mining automation has been a difficult proposition, partly because no two mining operations are exactly alike and these operations are carried out in an unpredictable environment. This is the main difference between automation in factories and in mines and that is why mining automation has been lagging so far behind factory automation. Automation is possible only when the machine 'knows' its workspace. In a factory, this workspace can be 'described' to the machine because it is sufficiently controlled. In a mine, the environment undergoes continuous change and the only way the machine can 'know' its workspace is through real-time sensing.

To achieve a production increase from 3.4 to 9.25 Mtpa from an underground mining operation in two years was a major challenge, it was essential to review the overall materials handling system from æthe face to the stockpileÆ.
