With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked contrast to the pyritetelluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related.These highly siliceous telluride-free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile lodes, while possessing an apparent overall relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E. dipping strike faults.INTRODUCTIONThe Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area lies N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie and is separated from the Golden Mile by the Golden Pike fault. The orebodies discussed lie in an area approximately 3 miles long by 1 mile wide (Fig. 1).The area includes the site of the original discovery of gold in the Kalgoorlie district in 1893. There have been numerous mining operations over the years, the bulk of the production coming from two orebodies, Mt. Charlotte and Hannan's North. These have provided approximately 900,000 tons of the 1,100,000 tons of ore mined in the area.Production to date from the principal orebodies in the area has been as follows.1. Hannan's North orebody, 582,000 tons of ore for 275,000 oz of gold2. Mt. Charlotte orebody, approximately 230,000 tons for 75,000 oz3. For fully effective information to be obtained from exploratory drilling for coal, drilling programs should be planned systemati- cally in successive stages, on the basis of existing geological criteria and information collated during each stage. In this way, drilling can be executed with optimum economy, aided by auxiliary geophysical techniques wherever these may be appropriate. The object- ives of the programs must ultimately include an adequate assessment of mining conditions as well as thorough evaluation of coal quality. The first of these objectives is not always appreciated by both geologists and mining engineers engaged in supervising drilling pro- grams, often resulting in the need for more additional drilling and more expense than would otherwise be required. To achieve all of these objectives as effectively as possible, the drilling should be supervised by well qualified personnel experienced in working in a multi- dicipline, professional mining, geological and engineering team.

"It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (<1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month. The model is then extended to demonstrate the effect of varying head grade, mixing and pod (or diversion) weight on bulk sorting efficiency.CITATION:Coghill, P J, Miljak, D, McGann, A, 2016. The Maddingley brown coal seam at Bacchus Marsh, where mined and bored, tends on the whole to a higher content of volatile matter than the Latrobe Valley brown coals, and this masks the presence of lignitic or earthy coal bands in the bore core analyses. Visits to the Lucifer Open Cut, at Bacchus Marsh, during 1948, revealed, however, a banded condition in the coal seam, as shown in Fig. 1. This banding showed in a face that had been exposed for a considerable period of time, permitting partial drying out and oxidation of the surface coal. The bands consist of different coal types, ,comparable with those found in the Yallournand Latrobe brown coal seams(l).The' light coloured bands in Fig. 1 consist of a buff to light-brown earthy coal of low specific gravity, that closely resembles the pollen coal, that occurs, as similar thin bands in the Yallourn and Latrobe seams. The 40 ft. of coal above the uppermost of these light coloured bands dries out on exposure to a black, closely cracked surface, composed of small dice-like fragments of a lustrous vitrain-like substance, and in every respect resembles the lignitic coal bands of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.The coal between and below the light-coloured bands develops fewer and more widely spaced shrinkage cracks on drying out, and remains brown in colour and earthy in appearance, resembling the earthy coal of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.Representative samples were cut of these coals, taking care to exclude surface coal, and analyses were made of them by the Metropolitan Gas Company, through the kindness of Dr. R. Rheology is the science which deals with the deformation and flow of matter. Thus rheology is concerned with the flow of any material. The mining industry is concerned with digging things out of the ground, extracting the good stuff and throwing away the bad stuff. In the upgrading processes associated with mining, ie mineral processing, wet techniques are used where the primary material being handled is a particulate fluid, ie a suspension. After the processing operation, with the concentrates extracted, what is left behind generally is a wet material in suspension form, which may or may not contain reagents harmful to the environment. The amount of waste generated in any of the mining processes is large, in fact, the mining industry is the largest generator of solid waste in Australia. In order to minimise the waste generated within the industry it has become of interest to handle the particulate fluid wastes, or suspensions, at high concentrations, thus removing water and some of the reagents which may be harmful to the environment. The resultant highly concentrated suspension is a non-Newtonian fluid. Rheology deals with the flow of non-Newtonian fluids; therefore a combination of rheological understanding of high density suspensions, in conjunction with an understanding of the environmental problems being faced by the mining industry, can and has led to improved methods of waste disposal in the industry, ie waste minimisation. This paper describes the progress that has been made in the development of dry disposal technology in the mining and minerals industry in Australia.

Open stoping is one of the widely adopted methods in underground bulk mining. In this method, fanned or parallel holes are often drilled from a top sill down to a sublevel in the ore zone and blasted ring by ring into a stope for excavation. A mass stope blast may involve blasting rock from multi-level drift rounds and displacing the muck to specific locations in order to allow safe and easy access for ore removal. This paper presents a strategic mass stope blast that took place at a large lead and zinc underground mine in eastern Canada. The blast consisted of more than 800 holes drilled in six blocks from three different sublevels. The challenge lay in the control of ground vibration and muck movement using precise timing to complete the blasting within 6.5 seconds. During this time span, sufficient voids were created in each level to allow the muck to move from the upper to the lower levels in sequential order across the six mining blocks without bridging. This paper describes stope blast simulations using a discrete element computer code for modeling blast-induced rock displacement as well as the application of electronic detonators. These detonators provided the means to accomplish the desired firing sequence including a drop raise blast at the start of the mass blast. The modelling concept is also described in the paper.

Natural sphalerite associated with copper, silver, lead-zinc, tin and tungsten deposits from various world-famous mineral deposits have been studied by cathodoluminescence (CL), laser ablasion inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to determine the relationship between trace element type and content and the CL properties of sphalerite. In general, sphalerite produces a spectrum of CL colour under electron bombardment that includes deep blue, turquoise, lime green, yellow-orange, orange-red and dull dark red depending on the type and concentration of trace quantities of activator ions. Sphalerite from most deposits shows a bright yellow-orange CL colour with lmax centred at 585 nm due to Mn2+ ion, and the intensity of CL is strongly dependent primarily on Fe2+ concentration. The blue emission band with lmax centred at 470 - 490 nm correlates with Ga and Ag at the Tsumeb, Horn Silver, Balmat and Kankoy mines. Colloform sphalerite from older well-known European lead-zinc deposits and late Cretaceous Kuroko-type VMS deposits of Turkey shows intense yellowish CL colour and their CL spectra are characterised by extremely broad emission bands ranging from 450 to 750 nm. These samples are characterised by low Mn (<10 ppm) and Ag (<1 ppm), and they are enriched in Tl (1 - 30 ppm) and Pb (80 - 1500 ppm). Strong green CL is produced by sphalerite from the Balmat-Edwards district. Amber, lime-green and red-orange sphalerite produced weak orange-red CL at room temperatures, with several emission bands centred at 490, 580, 630, 680, 745, with lmax at 630 nm being the strongest. These emission bands are well correlated with trace quantities of Sn, In, Cu and Mn activators. Sphalerite from the famous Ogdensburg and Franklin mines exhibited brilliant deep blue and orange CL colours and the blue CL may be related to Se. Cathodoluminescence behaviour of sphalerite serves to characterise ore types and help detect technologically important trace elements.

The installation of a final cleaning column at Ok Tedi Mining Limited was carried out to increase final concentrate grade in order to reduce concentrate handling, shipping and treatment charges and to reduce penalty payments. To fast-track the project a decision was made to install a full-size column on one of the two parallel circuits, designed on information readily available and utilising the experience of mill staff and an engineering consultant, rather than delay installation while a pilot scale program was conducted. A 3.66 m diameter by 12.8 m high column was installed to produce 40 t/h of final concentrate from a combination of rougher concentrate and recleaner concentrate. The column design and sparger system were by Cominco Engineering Services Limited.

Blasting is a common practice in mining whereby solid rock is fractured, using explosives, to a more manageable size. The effectiveness of blasting influences a number of downstream activities such as shovel digability, crusher throughput and mill throughput. As the cost of explosives is relatively low compared to milling costs (mainly due to power consumption), blasting practices can be optimised so that the downstream processes are made more efficient, and an overall cost saving made. This is the basis of the Mine to Mill approach. The effectiveness of the blasting is influenced by two main factors, the blasting practices used (eg explosive amount and type) and the geology of the area. As the geology cannot be altered, the blasting practices must be refined to create optimum blasting. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operation, located in the heart of the Kalgoorlie Goldfields is the largest gold mine in Australia. Mine to Mill at KCGM has had varied success, with initial positive indications being lessened by a number of factors, including the increase in the amount of voids.

Studies were carried out on dissolution and oxidation of iron powder in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution using oxygen over pressures. Cobalt and nickel losses during iron oxidation under different conditions were investigated. Regression equations were derived for percent cobalt loss and percent iron oxidation using ammonia, ammonium carbonate and oxygen partial pressure as the variables. The equations were tested for adequacy using Fisher's test. Cobalt losses increased with the increase of initial cobalt concentration and about 400 mg/l of cobalt was lost from a solution containing 500 mg/l cobalt. A maximum of about 80 mg/l nickel was lost from 1 g/l nickel containing solution, and this loss remained the same even when the nickel concentration was increased to 7.5 g/l.

A commercial wet scrubber was used in the SIU-Joy dust control laboratory to test several concepts for improving the dust control efficiency of a wet scrubber. The concepts tested included two filter-two-spray systems, hollow and full-cone sprays, horizontal and vertical sprays, different layer filters and addition of surfactant. The optimised scrubber configuration had water-only vertical sprays for pre-wetting coarse dust, and vertical surfactant-laden water sprays for wetting ultrafine particles. This scrubber configuration reduced dust concentrations from 250 mg/m3 to 1.8 mg/m3. In comparison, the conventional scrubber configuration in the feed provides an outlet dust concentration of 3 - 4 mg/m3 in field operation. Upon successful testing and optimisation of parameters in the laboratory, field demonstration of the concepts was conducted at an Illinois coal mine. The optimised scrubber configuration was tested in the field with good results in terms of improved visibility in the face area and reduced respirable and quartz dust concentrations. Additional modifications in the field involved relocation of the scrubber suction inlets from the bottom to the side and changing the water spray configuration on the miner head. These additional changes were based on a conceptualised spatial dust distribution profile in the face area. The results of these laboratory development and field demonstration studies are presented in this paper.

An empirical model of a 254mm water-only cyclone treating minus 17001im coal has been developed. The model includes the prediction of by-passing, SG50 corrected, water split and the use of a single equation forthe reduced performance curve of particles in the range 1700-106pm. Particles finer than 106pm did not separate according to specific gravity. Simulations using the model showed the water-only cyclone performance to be dependent more upon feed size distribution than washability when the feed contains high-ash fines, but that, with a deslimed feed, the yield and ash content of the over-flow should be controllable by altering feed rate or feed pulp density.

Isa and Townsville. The climate is semiarid, and operations are conducted throughout the year without difficulty.WATER SUPPLYThe mill make-up water is obtained from the mine, and also from Rifle Creek reservoir, which is situated 20 miles from Mount Isa. The domestic supply of water is obtained from a series of bores on the company's leases.POWER SUPPLYElectric power at 3300 volts, 3-phase, 50 cycles, is supplied from the company's steam power plant, consisting of two units, each unit comprising one Babcock & Wilcox boiler, supplying steam at 300 lb. pressure per sq: in. to one 5000 kW. turbo-alternator. Pulverized coal is used as fuel, and power is being generated at a cost of 0.45d. per kilowatt hour. The coal used is supplied from the State Coal Mine, Bowen, costing 42/- per ton delivered at Mt. Isa.

Deposition of uranium in the South Alligator river area has been influenced structurally by reverse faulting; and lithologically by carbonaceous shales and sandstones. Mineral assemblages suggest a mesothermal-epithermal epigenetic mode of origin. The ultimate source of the uranium and associated metals is probably in deep seated magmatism which is expressed at surface in the widespread penecontemporaneous vulcanity.

On Monday, October 25th, 1971 at approximately 12.15 a.m. the night shift proceeding underground discovered smoke at No.1 and No-3 cut throughs on the eastern side of the belt heading and in close proximity to the upcast shaft. Attempts to control the fire continued throughout the morning; as the position underground altered various procedures were adopted in an effort to contain and control the fire. Despite these efforts at approx. 12.40 p.m. a sudden change occurred which made it necessary to withdraw all workmen from underground, the vicinity of the Tunnel entrances and upcast shaft. Sealing of the mine at the entrances was the only remaining alternative. Several boreholes were put down to enable sampling of the atmosphere and air temperatures to be taken. This was essential as a guide to determining when conditions were suitable to allow exploration of the area using mine rescue self contained breathing apparatus.

Underground production from the low grade copper orebodies at Mount Lyell in recent years has involved surface subsidence of open cut areas. Relevant structural and lithological features of the geological environment are des- cribed. The highly mechanised underground mining system involves sublevel caving and sub- level open stoping with associated hangingwall cave. Monitoring of subsidence and caving has been made by regular visual inspection and measurement of crack development, and by sur- face profile surveys. These simple techniques have proved adequate in assuring management that ground movement is proceeding normally and safely.

The application of methods using large diameter down holes has become an important facet in both the development and stoping operations of mines within the Aberfoyle group. Holes of up to 98 metres (vertical) and 78 metres (inclined) have been successfully used in stoping operations. A number of rises have been developed to meet ventilation, servicing and escape-way requirements. The most ambitious rise to date has been a..vertical 93 metre long by 4.50 metre square ventilation rise. Although some early problems were experienced, the ultimate successful completion of this rise has enabled the technique to be incorporated with confidence in future mining plans. This paper summarises experience in long hole rising techniques, their evolution from the original cratering concepts, and the approach to further development of these techniques.

At least 85 000 tonnes of mine tailings were discharged into Deepdell Creek, east Otago between 1890s and 1940s. The tailings contained about 1 wt % arsenic, so about 850 tonnes of arsenic in the form of arsenopyrite was discharged. Annual floods have removed nearly all tailings within c. 60 years. Small amounts of arsenic-bearing sediments (<250 ppm) remain in Deepdell Creek. About 7 kg/year dissolved arsenic was discharged in groundwater from mineralised Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone rocks in the vicinity of the historic mine sites. Adsorption of this arsenic on to iron oxyhydroxides in the stream sediments may have contributed to the elevated As content of those sediments. Even less arsenic remains in the main Shag valley below the Deepdell Creek confluence (15 - 25 ppm As). Rare relict arsenopyrite grains are trapped in bedrock crevices 25 km from source. No tailings deposition is detectable in theShag River estuary, and the tailings have presumably been discharged into the sea. Natural rehabilitation of the Shag catchment has been rapid and effective.
