This paper presents information on the processing of minerals by decrepitation that can be an integral part of their mineral dressing. In the case of carbonates, processing by decrepitation is a special operation that has its objective as concentration of the oxide. Selective fragmentation of magnesite brought about by decrepitation uses pseudomorphosis which was observed at thermal decomposition of carbonates. By decrepitation of magnesite high-grade MgO concentrates were obtained with MgO contents above 80 per cent. With the sideritic ores a very important phenomenon was observed consisting in the removal of quartz in the fragmented fine-grained product which favourably affect pelletisation of the fines. The selective concentration of the MgO product brought about by thermal decomposition of dolomite accompanied with decrepitation was negligible.

A new lead refinery with a. capacity of 230,000 tons per year com-menced operation at*Port'Plsie in October, 1959. This plant' superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of thecontinuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content, created difficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was under-taken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic'zinc is now recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is then carried out by batch'treatinent with caustic soda yield-ing lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes have replaced continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. As the final stage is a .batch process the product composition can be.checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to,consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment has allowed the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs. This, together with the high purity of the lead, has assured the B.H.A.S. position in world markets.Automatic control systems have been extensively employed particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.

Empirical methods are deeply rooted in geomechanics. This is a consequence of the recognised complexity of the nature of the rock mass. The usual assumptions of material continuity, homogeneity, isotropicity and linear elasticity often assumed for soil, concrete and steel are difficult to justify in a rock mass except for mathematical convenience. These assumptions form the bases for most mechanistic, analytical and numerical methods in geomechanics. Believers in empirical methods argue that the complexity of the rock mass and its interaction with structures developed in it is adequately accounted for in empirical methods, which compensate for our ignorance.Franklin (1993) defines empirical design as quantified judgement based on experience. He further states that empirical methods often prove ‘closer’ to the ‘truth’ than the apparently more precise predictions of theoretical analysis, adding that based on real data empirical methods provide a standard against which theoretical predictions are measured and can be judged. This paper takes a critical look at the common empirical methods in geomechanics – rock mass classification systems (Bieniawski, 1973; Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; Hoek, 1994a), Laubscher block caving design rules (Laubscher, 1994), the stability graph (Mathews et al, 1981), pillar design equations (Salamon and Munro, 1967; Hedley and Grant, 1972; and their derivatives), pillar design chart (Lunder and Pakalnis, 1997) and failure criteria (Hoek and Brown, 1980; and its derivatives). The common thread in the application of these methods is that in most cases they are often applied blindly without an understanding of the underlying assumptions and database limits. This paper emphasises that users of these methods need to know the underlying assumptions, database limits and inherent hidden risks that are often unmentionable for their satisfactory use. Tests for the development of a metals recovery technology from samples of a Russian gold-bismuth deposit were carried out. Gold, silver and bismuth assay reported 5.6 g/t, 3.0 g/t and 0.08 per cent, respectively. Two flow sheet options were pilot plant tested: gravity/cyanidation of gravity tailings with subsequent flotation of cyanidation/carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailings, and gravity/flotation concentration with cyanidation/CIP of concentrates. Option 1 results showed lower gold, silver and bismuth recoveries (81.3 per cent Au, 55 per cent Ag and 74.0 per cent Bi) due to low flotation efficiency for cyanidation tailings. Therefore, a flow sheet involving gravity/flotation concentration to produce bismuth-gold concentrates (0.8 per cent Bi) with subsequent cyanidation/CIP was recommended. Gold, silver and bismuth recoveries obtained by this method to the combined gravity/flotation concentrate were 90.2 per cent Au, 83.3 per cent Ag and 80.2 per cent Bi of the ore, respectively. Overall gold, silver and bismuth recoveries were 83.0 per cent Au, 40.5 per cent Ag and 80.2 per cent Bi, respectively. Gold and silver recoveries to the cathode precipitate were 92 per cent Au and 48.6 per cent Ag (per operation). Reagents consumed for flotation were 0.1 kg lead acetate/t ore, 0.4 kg butyl xanthate/t ore, 0.2 kg T-80 frother/t ore, 0.02 kg sodium hexametaphosphate/t ore, 0.15 kg copper sulfate/t ore. Reagents consumption for cyanidation was 0.42 - 0.48 kg NaCN/t ore and 0.2 kg CaO/t ore. It was recommended to deliver bismuth concentrates after hydrometallurgical treatment to a smelter. Overall bismuth recovery including bismuth recovery achieved by pyrometallurgy was 60.0 per cent. However, it was obvious that delivery of bismuth concentrates to a smelter and their commercial treatment would be very expensive due to relatively high mass pull of bismuth concentrates (7.6 per cent of the ore weight). For this reason, thiourea leaching and hydrochloric acid leaching with subsequent cyanidation/CIP were investigated as alternatives to cyanide leaching. These two alternatives were proposed to enable optimal recovery of valuable metals from concentrates on-site. Recoveries obtained by thiourea leaching were 91.2 per cent Au, 90.5 - 91.9 per cent Bi and 77.0 - 78.1 per cent Ag. However, that method required considerable capital and operating costs. As an alternative, hydrochloric acid leaching with subsequent cyanidation was investigated. Test results showed improved gold, bismuth and silver recoveries, which were 94 - 95.9 Au per cent, 94 - 96 Bi per cent and 76 - 78 Ag per cent, respectively. Hydrochloric acid consumption was 100 kg/t concentrate or 7.6 kg/t ore. Current efficiency during electrowinning was about eight to 12 per cent. A recommended flow sheet involving hydrochloric acid leaching of concentrates, electrowinning of bismuth from solutions, recycling solutions after electrowinning and cyanidation of hydrochloric acid leaching cakes is described. Overall recoveries achieved by the proposed flow sheet were as follows: 84.8 - 86.5 Au per cent, 75.8 - 76.9 Bi per cent and 63.2 - 64.9 Ag per cent. Based on results from these tests, initial data for a bankable feasibility study and plant designing were developed.

Andean countries (Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina) have 42 semi-autogenous mills (SAG) in operation and there are more than 30 projects in the pipeline that consider SAG mills. At the end of the next decade, the total amount of SAG mills in this area will likely be close to 100.There is a lot of reliable operational information collected by JRI Ingenieria Sociedad Anonima, the author’s engineering company, for more than 20 years and processed by statistical software, to be used as a reference for design basis of future projects or to improve operations by comparison. JRI Ingenieria Sociedad Anonima has reliable information related to the performance of more than 50 per cent of the Andean SAG plants.The paper presented considers a set of graphs that summarise the collected and verified SAG plants technical data. The figures will show key parameters as circuits and equipment data, energy consumption, technical availability, utilisation rates, throughput variability, pebble productions, steel consumption and others.The data is compared with typical design basis of several engineering companies and the main differences are analysed and/or commented on.CITATION:Rayo, J, 2014. In classical drill and blast underground mining methods, especially narrow vein operations economic quantities of broken ore can be left behind following normal mucking operations on the stope floors. The ore left behind can have significant economic value and if not collected can be lost forever. This paper reviews techniques for cleaning this material from stopes that have been used in the past and reviews possible modern techniques that can be applied to ensure this valuable material is removed from the stopes.

In an environment of decreasing ore grade, increasing costs and uncertainty with respect to commodity prices, the industry could benefit from evaluating alternative technologies and innovative circuit configurations. The flexible circuit approach suggests that the design of grinding circuits can be adapted to changes in feed properties and economic conditions. Advances in modelling and simulation are enabling metallurgists to predict the performance of more complex circuit configurations with increased confidence. Ore variability information and processing costs may be used as modelling inputs to determine the optimum processing conditions at a given time. A case study has been completed demonstrating the value of combining a flexible circuit with a model-based optimisation of the process. Ore properties and equipment performance data obtained in operating plants have been used to model and simulate flexible circuit configurations.This paper explores strategies to introduce flexibility to existing circuit configurations when processing ores with high variability. Multicomponent models incorporated in the model developers’ kit (MDK) allow the simulation of more complex and flexible circuits. This capability enables demonstration of the potential to enhance metal production through adapting processing routes according to the ore type being processed. The simulation of different flow sheet configurations allowed the definition of the best option for maintaining the metal production when treating lower grade ores, highlighting the advantages of flexible circuit configurations compared with a one-process-fits-all approach.CITATION:Foggiatto, B, Hilden, M M and Powell, M S, 2014. Sensor-based sorting methods to remove waste or for upgrading ore prior to downstream metallurgical processing is becoming more prevalent for mining operations. X-ray transmission (XRT) sorters are a popular choice for mineral processing plants since they can sort a wide variety of minerals. XRT sorters pass high intensity X-rays through particles to generate images of varying greyscale, based on their effective atomic density. The ore sorter then mechanically separates the particles using algorithms based on the images. A popular test currently used to evaluate the amenability of the ore to XRT sorting is to pass the particles through the sorter and obtain the greyscale images showing mineralogical differences. This test provides information on the mineralogical heterogeneity between ore particles for their separation. However, it does not provide an understanding of the actual mineralogical composition of the ore or information pertaining to which other minerals may respond in a similar manner, nor does it provide liberation information. This paper describes a test that combines high resolution X-ray micro Computer Tomography (CT) combined with QEMScan to obtain information about amenability of ore to XRT sorting and to obtain valuable information that can streamline metallurgical testwork programs. This test also provides information relating to particle thickness and associated X-ray attenuation coefficients, desired mineral presence and mineralogical information relating to associated minerals and clays to assist with developing sorting algorithms. Combining the CT and QEMScan can address many limitations of the current method to determine whether XRT sorting technology is appropriate for particular ores. Mineralogy information from QEMScan can identify incidences of; mineral encapsulation, problematic clays, detrimental minerals as well as calibrate the greyscale values of CT data. Additional 3D CT imaging carried out on cores provides spatial information of the minerals within the ore and mineral grades.

Subsea massive sulfide deposits have particular mineralogical compositions and textural features differentiating them from onshore ore. When extracted from salty water and exposed to the air, massive sulfide samples strongly oxidise and soon become covered by thin layers of iron, copper and zinc-rich sulfates and oxides, as well as elemental sulfur. The textural properties vary according to the degree of maturity and the sample position within the hydrothermal deposit. Because of the variation of secondary mineralisation and porosity level, sea floor massive sulfides respond differently from terrestrial ore to processing methods. Froth flotation, commonly applied to separate all types of sulfides from the gangue minerals, is one possible treatment technique to process sea floor ore. Sulfide recovery rate is, in most cases, excellent (>90 per cent). However, separation of the various mineral phases is difficult to obtain even when applying known methods used for onshore ore. Moreover, the flotation behaviour decreases dramatically with time of conservation, even when the samples were stored in a confined environment. High pH range, which is a good way to depress pyrite and therefore to favour the flotation of copper and zinc sulfides, does not have the same effect on subsea ore. Consequently, careful flotation procedure should be elaborated to obtain efficient mineral separation for this specific marine ore.CITATION:Filippov, L O and Filippova, I V, 2015. Longhole open stoping was introduced in the zinc-rich 'B' lode at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) during 1968. Since then one longitud- inal and a series of transverse longhole open stopes have been developed. The longholes are drilled using Gardner Denver airtrac drilling jumbos and the broken ore is loaded from drawpoints and transported to chutes using Wagner ST5 scoop- trams. The holes were drilled from sill stopes 160 ft apart. The width of an emptied transverse longhole stope was successfully widened by blasting rings of blastholes drilled parallel to the stope wall. Proposed stope and pillar designs for a series of transverse longhole open stopes were assessed using a method of finite element analysis, applied to a longitudinal section through the area. Blastholes have been surveyed for dip and bearing using an Eastman borehole survey camera. The data produced has provided the basis of a study of blast- hole deviation. Deviation of boreholes is considered to be the major cause of the formation of benches in longhole stopes.

Sensitive and tolerant species of macroinvertebrates were present across a wide range of conductivity concentrations in the Isaac River catchment in Central Queensland, indicating the need for further ecological studies in the field to underpin the development of regionally-tailored guidelines for conductivity. The Isaac catchment has naturally high conductivity, but there is also increasing pressure on resource companies to ameliorate saline mine water discharge. Recently, catchment management efforts have included a revision of the water quality guidelines that are specific for the broader Fitzroy catchment. These guidelines include the use of macroinvertebrates as indicators of ecosystem health, but developing and applying such guidelines first requires a good understanding of macroinvertebrate ecology and population dynamics, ideally from field validation. To date, studies of macroinvertebrate tolerance to conductivity in southern freshwaters, as well as in laboratory-based ecotoxicological tests conducted in Queensland, have suggested that ranges exceeding 1000 ¦S/cm are likely to have negative impacts on survivorship of all taxa. However, these results may not be transferable to natural populations of macroinvertebrates from the Isaac, where the naturally high-conductivity water may allow the opportunity for adaptation. To test this, macroinvertebrate assemblages were examined at a series of sites in the upper Isaac River catchment at the end of the dry season in 2012. Patterns in the assemblages were examined together with water quality parameters, in order to gauge the ability of macroinvertebrates to survive at conductivity concentrations exceeding 1000 ¦S/cm. The specific conductance of the field sites ranged from 477 ¦S/cm to 9791 ¦S/cm and a total of 39 families from 13 orders were identified. Species richness was not significantly different between sites of differing conductivity. Macroinvertebrate populations were dominated by Dipterans as well as the traditionally more pollution-sensitive families Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera. There was an absence of any correlation between conductivity and species richness (P > 0.050), suggesting that macroinvertebrate taxa richness occurs independently of conductivity, at least in this particular cohort of mining and/or grazing influenced ephemeral systems in Central Queensland.CITATION:Stitz, L, Fabbro, L D and Kinnear, S, 2013. The theory of froth flotation developed slowly, in almost all cases lagging behind practical developments in the operation of flotation processes. This was largely the result of a lack of understanding of the required basic principles of chemistry and physics, many of which were being developed at the same time. A review of some of the early theories propounded is worthwhile, and should encourage those who are presently studying or practicing flotation to exercise some care in claiming a complete understanding of the underlying phenomena in the art. This paper considers theories presented up to and including those in Principles of Mineral Dressing by Antoine M Gaudin (1939). Of course, developments since that time are important, but they are beyond the scope of this discussion.

Gold at the Harbour Lights Mine (HLM), WA occurs principally in pyrite (Py) and arsenopyrite (AsPy) minerals rendering it inaccessible to direct cyanidation. Froth flotation produces a concentrate with low mass recovery and with high recoveries of sulfides. After investigating several alternatives, a novel flotation process has been developed to separate the concentrate into pyrite and arsenopyrite rich fractions. The pyrite fraction is finely ground and cyanide leached, while the arsenopyrite is treated off-site. This paper describes the separation process from laboratory bench scale through to commercial operation at the HLM gold plant.

The power station went into operation in 1931, when the installed capacity was 12,500 kVA. with a loading of 4,000 kVA. In 1936 the loading increased to 6,750 kVA. which necessitated the addition of a third set which went into operation in 1937, the installed capacity at that date being 18,750 kvA. with a loading of 7,000 kVA. This remained fairly constant until 1945, when a gradual increase was noticed, the loading in 1952 being 10,598 kVA.With the addition of the copper plant, additional generating capacity was required and it was decided to raise the installed capacity by the addition of a fourth set to 34,375 kVA. with an expected loading, when producing copper, of 20,000 kViA.MAIN POWER PLANTThis consists of three GiE.e. alternators of 6,250 kVA. or 5,000 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating and one G.E.C. alternator of 15,625 kVA. or 12,500 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating, making a total generating capacity of 34,375 kVA.Each alternator is driven by Fraser and Chalmers turbines at 3,000 r.p.m.SYSTEMThe main 3 phase 3 wire 3,300 volt distribution system has the neutral point of alternators earthed through by one or two earthing resistors designed to limit earth fault current to 3,000 amp. for 20 seconds, in the case of the large machine, and to 1,100 amp. for 10 seconds, in the case of the smaller machines, or full load of either size machine at rated voltage.

This paper discusses the recently com- pleted TBM-driven pressure tunnel at the Sand Bar Hydroelectric Power Project. The Sand Bar Project is a diversion scheme situated on the middle fork of the Stanislaus River in the Western Sierra Nevada, California, U.S.A. As part of the project, a 5.6 km long and 3.71 m diameter unlined pressure tunnel was bored by a Jarva TBM at the average rate of .37.5 m/ day. This report deals with construction aspects of the tunnel, including TBM performance, lining design, and remedial support measures. Correlations between TBM performance, geologic conditions, and rock properities are made, and the Contractor's mode of operations are discussed. Advance rate prediction, and the impact of these excellent advance rates attainable in hard rock using the new machines are discussed.

The IntelliMINE« system, incorporating Dispatch, is a fully Integrated Mine Management System. Measuring, quantifying and analysing the performance of mining is considered a fundamental and strategic step towards changing the nature of technical and operational decision-making at the majority of international mining corporations. Successful implementation of electronic data capture devices and computerised tools have enabled many mining operations to improve their competitive position with an improvement in the utilisation of the key assets, mineral resources, capital mining equipment and human resources. Real Time Mine Management Systems are designed to direct the emphasis away from collecting data and focus decision makers on the real issues with well-presented and reliable information. The systems provide a common stream of information to enable senior management, operations, maintenance, technical and process plant staff to make complementary decisions based on reliable, accurate and timely data. The mine asset information tools focus all employees on performance and give them feedback on their area of responsibility. The resulting tangible benefits can be delivered in different forms depending on the mining method, ore type, workplace culture and the current competitive position. Typical areas of improvement reported by system users are:reduction in capital expenditure on mining equipment fleets; more effective planning and budgeting parameters and procedures; increased control over ore-extraction and processing; increased employee accountability and organisational performance; and improved co-ordination between planning, operations, maintenance and processing. These improvements can be delivered in different forms depending on the status of the mine and commodity markets. In times of market oversupply and low commodity prices, the benefits can be delivered to the bottom line in terms of reduced cash costs, reduced capital and operating resources to maintain constant production. In times of market expansion, existing capital resources will be more productive delivering increased production and revenue. Mine management systems have the potential to transform a traditional mine operation into a learning organisation with an improved understanding of the critical performance issues and enable development of relevant strategies to continually identify and eliminate operational inefficiencies. The effectiveness of each strategy and operational change can be accurately monitored and its success (or otherwise) will be quantified. The latest downturn in the world metal prices has forced many mining companies to focus on cost reduction and productivity improvements as a means of remaining competitive. Maintenance represents a significant proportion of the overall operating costs in the mining industry. A structured proactive maintenance approach such as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) can achieve significant cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled, thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production.

A turbulent flotation model has been developed by considering the subprocesses of collision, attachment, detachment, and froth recovery. AbrahamsonÆs model (1975) of infinite Stokes number is used to model collision, while the attachment and detachment subprocesses are modelled by considering the kinetic energies required to overcome the energy barriers and the work of adhesion, respectively. The energy barriers are determined by considering various surface forces, including electrostatic, dispersion and hydrophobic forces, while the kinetic energies are determined from the particle velocities at close separation distances from air bubbles. The latter has been determined by modifying the turbulent root-mean-square (RMS) velocities of Liepe and Moeckel (1976) and Schubert (1999) in view of a lubrication theory. In calculating the RMS velocities, it is assumed that a flotation cell is subdivided into low and high energy dissipation zones. The model predictions made by varying various hydrodynamic and surface chemistry parameters are consistent with flotation practice.

Astute exploration on the northern Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, resulted in the discovery of the Toka Tindung, Pajajaran, Blambagan and Araren low-sulphidation quartz-adularia vein and stockwork gold-silver deposits. Combined, these deposits have estimated mineral resources in excess of I Moz gold at an average grade of 2.8 gAu/t and 7 gAg/t and are known as the Toka Tindung Gold Project. Gold typically occurs as fine grained electrum and is often associated with acanthite. The structurally controlled mineralised veins are hosted by Late Pliocene plagioclase and pyroxene-phyric basaltic andesite volcaniclastics and flows which form part of the Early Miocene to Pleistocene Sulawesi-East Mindanao Arc. Silica-adularia alteration dominates the volcaniclastic host of the Toka Tindung deposit. K-Ar dating of vein adularia indicates a 2.16 ¦ 0.04 Ma mineralisation age. Relatively narrow envelopes of silicification and argillisation surround the chalcedonic silica, quartz and adularia veins, stockworks and breccias at the other three deposits. Remnant hydrothermal breccias, chalcedony and anomalous arsenic, antimony and mercury indicate these gold deposits were part of a mineralised geothermal system.As of June 1997, Aurora Gold Ltd is finalising a feasibility study on exploitation of the four deposits and treatment of ore through a centrally located conventional CIP plant. Subsea tailings disposal is anticipated. Favourable metallurgy of the ore and logistics of the project area assist in minimising capital requirements.
