Leightons is the sole contractor at the Wahana Coal Mine Project (part of the Bayan Group), a multi-seam thermal deposit consisting of 13 coal seams with thicknesses ranging from 20 cm to 500 cm. The average dip of the deposit is 18 - 20°. However the deposit is heavily faulted in certain domains with anticlinal and synclinal structures present causing seams to dip up to 90°. Average thickness of coal inter-burdens range from less than 2 to 12 m. The minimum coal thickness being mined is 20 cm. Coal production is direct mine mouth feed and there is no coal processing plant currently used.Conventional blasting between the highly variable coal horizons in the early phases of the mine life was suboptimal from a production perspective. Drilling short holes with a reduced drill pattern, and on occasions with sloping benches, resulted in low drilling and explosives loading efficiency.A high frequency of small size blasts fired up to two times daily was required with each blast consisting of four up to five small blast areas. Each blast averaged approximately 36 000 bcm thus causing a low utilisation rate of the mining fleet from frequent blast delays and the inability to deploy larger Liebherr 9350 excavators on bench. It was identified that increasing the production targets required a more efficient drilling and blasting process. Furthermore, due to the highly variable nature of the deposit, the existing coal model was determined to not be able to accurately predict the coal seam location prior to blasthole drilling.In August 2009, Leighton Contractors Indonesia and Orica Mining Services with the full support of the Wahana team, initiated through seam blasting trials using electronic blasting systems. Further trials were conducted in November 2009. Trial evaluations indicated that the benefits from decreased lost time events due to blasting, an increased vertical advance rate per blast, and increased overall blast size could be attained while not damaging or diluting coal.Full-scale?through seam blasting has been ongoing since February 2010 for the upper eight coal seams to extract coal seam thicknesses ranging from 20 - 100 cm. This paper will discuss the parameters of the through seam blasting process in Wahana and the resulting benefits to the overall mine production.

The radiolarian biostratigraphy of the western part of the Gympie Province, north of Brisbane, has been examined. This part of the province comprises mainly the Amamoor beds and the Gympie Group, which have been assigned Permian ages on the basis of localised marine macrofossils. This study has shown that the Amamoor beds and the Gympie Group include older strata than previously supposed.The Amamoor beds consist of at least two tectonic units, namely a melange unit (unit A) and a well stratified sequence of sedimentary rocks (unit B). The former unit, regarded as an accretionary subduction complex, contains chert blocks ranging from Late Devonian to Earliest Carboniferous, while the latter unit yields Permian radiolarians. Latest Devonian to Earliest Carboniferous bedded cherts occur in sequence previously mapped as Amamoor beds and Gympie Group.

Bauxite from the Weipa and Andoom (North Queensland) deposits was treated to provide a low-iron raw material for high- alumina refractories or aluminium chloride manufacture. The operation involved passing crushed, calcined bauxite continuously through a single laboratory shaft furnace. Consecutive sulfidation and chlorination of the iron minerals within the furnace resulted in a beneficiate containing less than 2% (wt.) Fe203 and by-product ferric chloride con- taining only traces of aluminium.

It is well known that the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) can only be operated efficiently under choke feeding conditions in which a material bed is built up between the rollers to ensure interparticle breakage. By increasing the fines amount in the material bed up to a specific level with the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained which results in compact flakes including more fines. Extensive test work has been carried out with an industrial HPGR unit grinding cement clinker in a cement plant in Turkey. During the test work the recycling load of the circuit was changed to achieve different ratios to the fresh feed rate in order to identify the effect of the recycling load on the circuit performance. Six different tests were performed with the circuit at steady state. For each test, samples were collected from HPGR fresh feed and discharge, and total feed, then the particle size distributions of the samples were determined and mass balances around the circuit were calculated. The conclusion was that the reduction ratio of the HPGR increased with increase in recycling load. The flake densities showed the same trend with more compacted flakes being produced for higher recycling loads.

Since gold was first discovered, mining development in the West Australian goldfields has been heavily dependent on the location of groundwater both for potable and mineral processing supplies . The location of adequate and economic sources of water has been a constant challenge to both explorers and developers throughout the history of the goldfields. The provision of a piped supply from Mundaring in 1903 greatly alleviated pressure on scarce resources, lowered mining costs and permitted the orderly development of infrastructure. However, increases in the demand for water resulting from new mineral discoveries over the past three decades has led to renewed pressures for more local supplies to be established. Wide-ranging groundwater exploration took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's, also, more recently, in support of intensified gold exploration. The collation and interpretation of the hydrogeological data from the whole goldfields region indicates that despite a low mean annual rainfall of between 180 and 350 mm, quite marked differences exist between the rates of groundwater recharge in different parts of the area, In general, these can be shown to diminish in a southerly direction contrary to a trend towards increases in annual rainfall. Recharge rates are related mainly to differences in rock weathering pattern, geological structure and physiography. The same differences have controlled the pattern of groundwater salinity and the magnitude of groundwater storages associated with the palaeodrainages. In the vicinity of the northern and western watersheds with the Gascoyne, the superficial sediments tend to be thin, may have calcrete in the section and contain moderate storages of brackish or even fresh water. This contrasts with the lower regions of the palaeodrainages where calcrete is absent and deeper erosion has permitted the accumulation of relatively large thicknesses of fine-grained sediments which are saturated with hypersaline water and constitute substantial storages. Account must be taken of these characteristics if water supply sources are to be optimised to meet the growing demands for groundwater in the region.

A viable flow sheet of the sorption-flotation technology for gold recovery from low-grade ores and concentrates using powdered activated carbon modified by organic compounds as the sorbent-bearer has been developed. The powdered activated carbon, with high kinetic ability and sufficient specific area, was selected as the all-purpose gold cyanide complex-bearing sorbent which is active during flotation. To improve carbon adsorption capacity and to provide the required floatability its porous structure was filled with a quaternary ammonium compound which can extract gold cyanide complexes and render additional flotation properties to the carbon. To optimise the process and to simplify the layout, adsorption and flotation processes were carried out simultaneously in a mechanical flotation cell. The proposed technology was used for extended and pilot-plant tests of sorption-flotation gold recovery from 0.6 g/t Au final tailings and 2.0 g/t Au gravity tailings. The extended tests were carried out on Taseevskaya (Chita Region) flotation tailings, whereas pilot-plant tests were conducted on Kommunarovskaya (Krasnoyarsk Region) gravity tailings passing to cyanidation, followed by processing with filtration technology. Additional gold recovery from Taseevskaya final flotation tailings was 50.8 per cent. Gold recovery from Kommunarovskaya final gravity tailings was 92.5 per cent. Compared to the complete sludge process conventionally used at the plant, gold recovery was increased by 7.5 per cent due to lower gold losses in the liquid phase and conversion of the refractory non-cyanided metal into a carbon concentrate. This paper presents the experimental results of gold adsorption onto powdered activated carbon modified with quaternary ammonium compounds (sorbent-bearer) as well as sorbent-bearer flotation with various collectors from cyanide solutions and pulps.

Pressure leaching of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore was carried out at 150 and 190¦C under 1050 kPa oxygen overpressure in 1 L and 4 L titanium autoclaves to extract zinc, and to obtain residues for smelting tests and leach liquors for purification and recovery of the zinc by electrowinning. Dissolution of 95% of the zinc was achieved at both temperatures. Copper and iron dissolution and the degree of oxidation of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur or sulphate depended on the temperature of the leach. At 190¦C, a jarosite (a basic iron sulphate) was the major iron-containing material in a residue that contained 17% total sulphur. Its formation was associated with dissolution of 18% of the iron. At 150¦C, oxidation of the sulphide sulphur and dissolution of the iron were significantly less. Only 7% of the iron was dissolved and a residue containing 25% total sulphur, present as a lead jarosite, lead sulphate, and elemental sulphur, was obtained. The formation of small pellets of unreacted sulphides coated with elemental sulphur caused problems during the leaching at 150¦C, and also during scale-up from the 1 L to the 4 L autoclave at 190¦C. At 150¦C the concentrate required two stages of leaching to achieve dissolution of over 90% of the zinc. These problems are discussed.

Sampling of grain for mycotoxins is challenging in that some mycotoxins, such as Ochratoxin A (OTA), have very low permitted levels and the kernels carrying the mycotoxin may be highly localised within the bulk of the grain as ‘hot spots’. Sampling for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be fraught with similar problems, especially if the contamination is adventitious and random. Incremental sampling under these circumstances can be shown to lead to a high variance in the sampling result.A new design of sampler for grain and other free-flowing particulates has been developed that is effective in practically eliminating the sampling variance due to distributional heterogeneity (DH).This paper introduces the design and argues that the sampler should be free of sampling variance due to DH.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. In situations where foundation piles are located in proximity to existing or future tunnels, it is typical for the tunnel owner to require that sleeving of the piles be carried out to at least the invert of the tunnels to minimise any load transfer to the tunnel lining. In competent rock, this practice may be sometimes unnecessary, thus uneconomical. This paper presents an assessment of the effect of pile loading from one of the multi-storey buildings at Barangaroo South in Sydney on the adjacent future Sydney Metro tunnels. It was originally required by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) that the piles be sleeved below the tunnel invert level; however, the building developer wanted to reduce the pile sleeving depth to achieve a more economical solution due to the large number of load transfer piles being required for the project. To assess this feasibility, a full 3D commercial numerical code, FLAC3D, was used to carry out this complex soil-structure interaction analyses. Based on these assessments, it was demonstrated successfully to the TfNSW that the pile sleeving may be terminated at 2 m above the tunnel invert level. For this arrangement, the investigations found that the loading on the piles should have negligible adverse impact on the tunnel lining design. As a result of such an assessment, the proposed pile sleeving level was approved by TfNSW, thus offering an economical foundation solution for the project.CITATION:Azad, F M, Oliveira, D A F and Wong, P K, 2014. Consistent slag blow end point detection remains one of the challenges in the Peirce-Smith converters at Mount Isa MinesÆ Copper Smelter. Under blowing results in foaming on copper blow and carry forward of oxide skims to the anode furnace. Over blowing results in high copper losses to the slag. Both present safety issues and contribute to lower copper production. The end points of the slag making phases are assessed by inspection of a bar sample. A bar sample is a thin accretion layer that adheres to a steel bar when it is inserted into the tuyere while the converter is blowing. This method is biased and subjective, so there is heavy reliance on operator experience. The Semtech Optical Process Control (OPC) system was installed in early 2002 for converter slag blow end point detection. Initial plant trials did not improve all aspects of converter operations, and uptake by operators was poor, so the system was not used. In early 2005, the Semtech OPC system was re-visited and another short trial was conducted to evaluate the permanent use of the system for slag and copper blow end point detection. During this trial, the Semtech OPC method was found to be superior to bar sampling for slag blow end point detection. The implementation and refurbishment of the Semtech OPC system has resulted in plant improvements and given a better insight into converter operation during blowing. Oxide skim generation carried forward to the anode furnace has been shown to decrease with increasing compliance with Semtech OPC. Some of the expected improvements to converter operation were not found to be significant. Semtech OPC is now well received and utilised by converter operators. Individual paper available only. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Elaine Dorothy Cu-Au (REE-U) skarn deposit in the Mt Isa Inlier, Queensland, Australia is characterised by extensive metamorphic calc-silicate hornfels long before hydrothermal skarn and complicated deformation history. The deposit is hosted by the Corella Formation (1780–1740 Ma) and exhibits two phases of skarn formation in the study area – banded fine-grained diopsidic hornfels (Phase 1) and coarse-grain pyroxene skarn (Phase 2). Phase 1 skarn is predeformation and is interpreted to have been caused by the 1743–1734 Ma Burstall Magmatic Suites, whereas the coarse-grained pyroxene skarn (Phase 2 skarn) postdates the deformation and peak metamorphism events. Phase 2 skarn consists of prograde pyroxene, less garnet and titanite, retrograde epidote, REE-allanite, amphibole, biotite, and later sulfides, carbonate, quartz, anhydrite and chlorite. It hosts most of the copper mineralisation, with the REE elements occurring mostly in allanite. Titanite coexisting with allanite and Cu-Fe sulfides in Phase 2 skarn has been dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at 1524 ± 9 Ma (207Pb/206Pb). The ages are similar to Williams-Naraku Batholiths, which outcrop approximately 40 km to the east in the Eastern Fold Belt. In Elaine Dorothy, the isotopic compositions for calcite cluster around 12.2‰ d18O and -3.7‰ d13C. It probably resulted from a mixing processes between marine sourced carbon-oxygen (ca 20‰ d18O and -0.5‰ d13C) and other distinct geochemical reservoirs, eg magmatic C-O. These features indicate that Phase 2 skarn and Cu-Au (REE-U) mineralisation may be related to unexposed intrusions at deeper levels.CITATION:Sha, P, Spandler, C and Chang, Z, 2015. A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.

Just as geophysics, in the form of 3D seismic and wireline logging, plays a key role in petroleum reservoir management, so too will geophysics play an important role in mining of coal, metals, and minerals in the 21 st century. The commercial and social imperatives driving greater use of geophysics are reduced costs, increased revenues, and enhanced safety. In short, superior utilisation of capital and management of risks. In relatively undeformed sedimentary environments it is possible to adapt petroleum-style 3D reflection seismic to image mines. This has been demonstrated most impressively in the Witwatersrand. Anglo-American, for example, completed a $1 million 3D seismic survey at Western Deeps in order to site a new $300 million shaft with confidence. Likewise, 3D seismic has gained rapid acceptance at Australian coal mines in recent years. Encouraged by these successes, metalliferous mining companies are supporting research in Canada and Australia, as well as South Africa, to adapt 3D seismic for more highly structured, metamorphic terranes. Because the mining industry is far more diverse than the petroleum industry in terms of commodities and geological environments, 3D seismic is not always cost-effective. A plethora of other geophysical techniques can be applied, many of which are employed in mineral exploration. Mine applications of geophysics differ from traditional exploration applications in two main ways: time scales and length scales are shorter, and boreholes are more plentiful. Borehole geophysical techniques therefore play a more significant role, both for logging and imaging. Logging systems detail the variations of in situ physical properties down the borehole at scales measured in centimetres, while geophysical imaging techniques can map features located tens or even hundreds of metres from the sensors. While geologists tend to think of boreholes in terms of chips and core, geophysicists perceive them first and foremost as access paths for instruments. Borehole logging has been employed at iron and coal mines for decades, mainly to accurately define ore boundaries in delineation holes. In base metal mines, Outokumpu implemented logging widely for orebody delineation in percussion holes in the 1980s. The benefit was a direct cost-saving, arising from substitution of core drilling with percussion drilling plus borehole logging. The practice has since spread to other companies. INCO, for example, defines nickel boundaries in blast holes at Sudbury using conductivity logs. The benefits are in the form of reduced dilution and enhanced ore recovery, flowing from a more accurate mine model. Density, natural gamma radiation, magnetic susceptibility, and conductivity are the principal metalliferous mine logging parameters because they can be recorded in both dry and water-filled holes. Sonic velocity is the premier geotechnical logging parameter, given its sensitivity to rock strength, stress, porosity, and degree of fracturing. Sonic is recorded routinely in exploration and geotechnical holes at coal mines. With the advent of slimline dipmeter, full waveform sonic, and optical and acoustic scanner tools, the role of borehole logging in geotechnical evaluations is expanding. Monitoring of strain and micro-seismic activity enhances safety during mine production. While qualitative interpretation of logs is adequate for stratigraphic identification or definition of boundaries, a wealth of quantitative information, eg density, can be derived from properly calibrated, repeatable geophysical logs. Moreover, geophysical logs can sometimes serve as surrogates for geochemical assays, and not only for magnetite and uranium. At OutokumpuÆs Kemi chromite mine, for example, gamma-gamma logging provides the basis for grade control. By reducing reliance on assaying, three benefits can be realised: reduced reliance on core drilling; lower core handling and assaying costs; and shorter turn-around times. Conventional downhole EM and borehole magnetics are used for near-mine exploration, and for ground sterilisation. Inco has enjoyed considerable success with borehole UTEM in the Sudbury Basin, for example, and Geopeko has applied three-component borehole magnetics successfully in the Tennant Creek area. Electrical techniques such as applied potential and magnetometric resistivity (MMR) are also finding application at mines. For higher resolution, borehole seismic, radio imaging, and radar have been invoked, with varying degrees of success, to delineate orebodies and map structures, or to geotechnically characterise the rock mass and identify hazards. Success mapping nickel sulphide shoots with borehole radar has been reported by WMC at Kambalda. There are no universal geophysical panaceas, and each mine imposes different geological, logistical, and economic constraints. Geophysics will not always be cost-effective. However, the greatest single impediment to expanded use of geophysics at mines has been the low level of awareness of geophysics on the part of most mine geologists, engineers, and managers and, equally, the limited understanding of mine geology and engineering exhibited by the majority of geophysicists. This myopia will be remembered as a 20th century affliction! Blue Sky areas for mine geophysics in the next ten years include integration of geophysical data acquisition with drilling, enhanced grade estimation and rock mass characterisation, and the incorporation of geophysical information into mine models using geostatistical techniques. All these advances will be predicated on an expansion of petrophysical knowledge.

The various mechanisms by which phosphorus (P) occurs and is distributed within banded iron formations (BIF)-derived iron ore are examined. In unenriched, precursor BIF P occurs predominantly as discrete grains of primary apatite. In high-grade ores hosted mainly by the Brockman Iron Formation, P occurs in three main forms:1. as secondary apatite;2. other submicron, P-rich phases (eg Rare earth containing minerals (REE), vivianite, strengite,wavellite) present in pore networks; and3. as P occurring with iron oxides, in particular, goethite.However, the presence of secondary P-bearing phases does not contribute signifi cantly to the total P level in iron ore, and it is P associated mainly with goethite, which represents the most common occurrence of P in these ores.No direct evidence for the replacement of Fe by P within the structure of synthetic goethite has been demonstrated. Therefore, it is most likely that in iron ores P associates with goethite in occluded form as adsorbed PO4 3- species or as discrete P-bearing minerals, such as strengite, wavellite or vivianite, in ultra-fine, micro-pores or within intra-domain regions of multi-domainic goethite. Such occluded P is not easily extracted with commonly used lixiviants, such as weakly alkaline leachates. Recent development of a low temperature-alkalie/water leach extraction method has been successful in reducing not only the P content, but also amounts of Si and Al inthe initial ore. Refi nement of such a method to commercial application will have enormous benefit in realising the economic potential of large tonnages of high-P (ie >0.07 wt per cent P) bearing iron ore.

The paper describes factors influencing the choice of the unit, problems encountered during the commissioning and details of the present roaster operation.

Modern gold production from the Gympie Goldfield commenced in 1995 with the first production from the Monkland Mine. The primary ore target was the 2.5 m wide Inglewood Fault ore zone, which was initially mined using traditional narrow-vein shrink stoping. This manuallyintensive mining method allowed the mine to re-open with minimal capital cost, however the trade off was low productivity and high operating costs. As the mine has developed, access through 100-year-old, timber-lined, small shafts, and the high cost of delineating reserves, has restricted modernisation of the operations. In early-2000 a stockwork lode was discovered adjacent to the existing workings with an economic width of 40 m. In order to maximise the benefit of such an orebody, mining needed to be approached in a new way. This paper summarises the many changes implemented at the Monkland Mine, including the necessary cultural change, implementing long-hole stoping, de-bottlenecking and the application of mechanisation. The result has been a significant improvement in safety performance, higher productivity and a more secure future for all those involved in the project.

This paper focuses on the impact of high pulp temperature on sphalerite flotation after the zinc regrind circuit in the Zinc Plant of Somincor, owned and operated by Lundin Mining Corporation. In the zinc circuit, the zinc rougher concentrate is reground with forged steel media before flotation with one stage of roughing and scavenging, and three stages of cleaning to obtain a zinc final concentrate (zinc grade >50 per cent). After regrinding, sphalerite flotation has been found to be seriously affected by high pulp temperature which may occur during the summer months. Mineral recoveries were found to be seriously reduced at pulp temperatures above 60¦C. At this high pulp temperature, neither elevated copper sulfate concentration nor a decreased pH alone appreciably increased Zn recovery. However, a combination of these two (eg a decrease in pH from 11.5 to 10.8, and an increase in copper sulfate dosage from 400 g/t to 800 g/t) was found to reduce Zn depression at high pulp temperature. At pulp temperatures below 45¦C, the negative influence of pulp temperature on mineral recoveries was minimal. A systematic series of flotation tests and solution/surface analyses were performed to reveal causes for poor sphalerite flotation at high pulp temperature after regrinding. The decrease in mineral recovery was shown to be associated with variations in the surface species on mineral particles in response to the increased pulp temperature. These variations in the surface species include collector desorption and superficial oxidation to form lead/zinc oxide/hydroxides on mineral particles. The influence of the type of regrinding media on sphalerite flotation at high pulp temperature was also addressed in this work.

Beneficiation of low-grade fine-grained hematite ores becomes increasingly important due to rapid depletion of high quality iron ore resources. However, fine particles, especially ultra-fine particles, make efficient beneficiation of these ores more difficult. Therefore, methods to reduce the influence of fine particles must be considered to achieve better beneficiation performance. Analysis and systematical beneficiation tests were carried out on an ultra-fine-grained hematite ore slime from washing a fine grained hematite ore. Ore particles were found to be presented in loose soil. While some of the ore particles were agglomerated, they were very fine and contained up to 76.5 per cent -0.023 mm material. In this paper, using a single magnetic separation flow sheet with sodium silicate (SS) as a dispersing agent, a concentrate containing 65.05 per cent Fe was obtained at an iron recovery of 68.58 per cent from the hematite ore slime of 56.65 per cent Fe. The single magnetic separation flow sheet was simple and reliable, the agent SS was effective in dispersing ultra-fine particles. This paper presents an analysis on the dynamic adsorption of frothers and collectors onto air bubbles in flotation. The analysis was carried out using the theory on the surfactant transfer by diffusion and adsorption. The bubble size was considered when solving the diffusion equation for the dynamic surface excess. The adsorption kinetics was modelled employing the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and its extension with the inclusion of the lateral interaction of the adsorbed molecules (the Frumkin adsorption isotherm). The numerical computation was applied to solve the governing equations. The dynamic adsorption of the surfactants was measured in terms of the dynamic surface tension for sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and Dowfroth 250, using pendant bubble tensiometry. The results show that for air bubbles with diameter of the order of 1 mm, the bubble size effect on the dynamic surface tension is small and the solution of the diffusion equation for a planar gas-liquid surface can be used to describe the dynamic adsorption onto the air bubbles. The experimental data obtained with SDBS were well described by the Frumkin adsorption isotherm and the molecular diffusion. The model description for the experimental data obtained with Dowfroth 250 required the kinetic equations. The paper is relevant for further analysis of the role of the adsorbed surfactants in the particle collection.
