Hydro-economics is a field of research that analyses water resources from a multi-disciplinary approach (Harou et al., 2009). These models generally include one component that describes the water resources of the catchment being analysed (e.g. the physical behaviour of water), an economic component that describes users’ water demand function (changes of willingness to pay relative to availability) and a coupling methodology. These models go beyond calculating cash flows for water investments and analyse the economic behaviour of users when facing water shortages or surplus. In other words, water demand curves are defined for each water user (e.g. urban, agriculture, mining, environmental and hydropower), and they are used to retrofit the water resources component. As a result, the model approximates the catchment scale response to droughts and wet periods, including the effects of water markets, restrictions, recycling, water sharing and any cooperative efforts by users to adjust to changing climate conditions.These models are usually focused on agriculture and urban users, the main water consumers in most catchments, but they have sometimes included environmental, industrial and hydropower users (Bekchanov, Sood, & Jeuland, 2015). Nevertheless, although a relevant user of water in several catchments, the mining industry has been rarely included. This paper is part of an ongoing project that addresses this gap by developing a hydro-economic model in the upper section of the Aconcagua River in Chile. The excavation of a coal mine or any other mine, tunnel, or quarry, below the water table establishes a void towards which ground- water will flow. Inflows into the mine, if significant, can cause not only problems such as flooding, and/or muddy floors, in the mine, but commonly also require disposal of poor quality groundwater. The flow of groundwater towards a mine is accompanied by a decline in groundwater levels, which may extend up to several kilo- metres around the mine. This may seriously effect vegetation, stream flow and existing users of groundwater. At the pit face groundwater gradients can also cause slope stability problems and where a water table is intersected, increase blasting costs.

Gold mineralisation at the Enterprise Mine, 230 km south of Darwin, occurs within folded and metamorphosed sediments of the Lower Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation adjacent to the Cullen Granite. The mineralised zone, which occupies an area of approximately 800 m x 300 m is local- ised by a moderately tight, upright symmetrical anticline which plunges shallowly southwards. The anticline has been disrupted by numerous faults on which the maximum movement is 40 m. Gold is associated with quartz and sul- phide veins which are present as saddle reefs, inter-reef veins and fault controlled reefs. it occurs within the veins or their alteration haloes, either as free gold (2 - 50 per cent of total gold content) or intimately associated with sulphides, principally arsenopyrite and Pyrrhotite.

Under design philosophy, the Hilton concentrator produced lead, zinc and LGM (lead plus zinc) concentrates. The LGM (Iow grade middling) concentrate was produced by combining coarse middling streams from the lead and zinc circuits, regrinding and subsequent flotation. Mineralogical examination of the zinc circuit middling stream prior to regrinding suggested that production of zinc concentrate from the zinc circuit middling stream should be possible by rearranging existing plant equipment. Laboratory testing of samples of plant products, however, showed that regrinding combined wi th the usual reagent suite was nO1 sufficient to produce a zinc concentrate of the required specifications.Examination of the process water highlighted a problem with dissolved salts in the circuit water, which was solved by in-circuit precipitation of the dissolved ions with soda ash. Implementation of the procedure in the concentrator effectively transferred to the zinc concentrate all sphalerite previously recovered to the LGM concentrate.

The Boddington Gold Mine orebody is a large tonnage, low grade gold deposit located within the Archaean Saddleback greenstone belt within the south-western region of Western Australia. The orebody consists of laterite caprock (30 per cent) and clays (70 per cent) produced by lateritisation of felsic volcanics and intrusives. The caprock comprises gravel, hardcap and B-zone which have a specific gravity of 1.8, 2.4 and 1.8 respectively. The clay has a specific gravity of 1.5.

Tools such as landform evolution models (LEMs) provide a means of predicting how a landform may evolve over extended periods of time. Here, we utilise the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM to assess a proposed rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory of Australia (Figure 1). The environmental requirements for the closure of the mine state that the final landform must be able to physically isolate tailings material from the environment for a period of at least 10,000 years (Australian Government, 1999). However, uncertainty exists as to the reliability of model predictions representing thousands of years.In this study, we use model predictions from an undisturbed pre-mine landform to calibrate the parameters used in model simulations of a post-mining rehabilitated landform over a simulated period of 1,000 years. Specifically, we vary environmental conditions such as rainfall, presence/absence of vegetation and surface particle size characteristics in a series of model simulations to determine their impact on the respective landforms, to revise model input parameters as required. A simulated period of 1,000 years was used as it represents a period in which long term landform evolution patterns and trends may be established and identified. Historically, most of the gold produced from Kalgoorlie has been derived from the gold and gold telluride Golden Mile lode systems dominantly hosted within the Golden Mile Doler-ite and to a lesser extent, Paringa Basalt. In more recent times the gold-quartz stockwork ore bodies within Unit 8 of the Golden Mile Dolerite at Mt Charlotte have become increasingly imp-ortant.Extensive low grade gold mineralisation has now been defined to the north and east of Kalgoorlie within rock units of the Golden Mile sequence not generally considered to be highly prospective.Two main types of mineralisation have been defined. The first comprises variably mineralised and altered quartz-albite porphyr-ies emplaced within talc-carbonated Hannans Lake Serpentinite (Mystery deposit). There is intense fuchsitic, pyritic and carbonate alter-ation of the serpentinite adjacent to the porphyry bodies. Gold mineralisation is assoc-iated with fine-grained disseminations and veinlets of pyrite and narrow quartz and quartz-tourmaline veining within the porphyry and adjacent fuchsite-carbonate rock. PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is gold and silver mine located in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Mining activities in PT.IMK is conducted in Bantian pit area by applying surface mining method and using combination of excavator and hauler (articulated dump truck and rigid haul truck) as the transportation for ore to the crushing plant and waste material to the waste dump. Current blasting practice is ore-waste blasting. Ore-waste blasting is the term where the ore and waste rock are blasted in the same blasting process. Blasting is conducted by using nonel initiation system. By multiple pits operation, monthly powder factor is varied from 0.23 kg/t to 0.27 kg/t. Emulsion blend with density 1.15 g/cc is used as bulk explosive. At this stage, the concept of geoblast is proposed as an engineering tool for Drill and Blast engineering practice in PT.IMK. In addition, there is a need to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting, to maintain monthly powder factor, and to maintain excavator’s productivity. Next, the concept of scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) and the concept of blastability index (Lilly, 1986) are proposed as geoblast’s tools to improve blasting practice in PT.IMK. It is expected that rock fragmentation by blasting, explosive consumption and excavator’s productivity will be maintained by integration of geoblast and drill and blast engineering. Furthermore, the objective of this paper is to integrate geoblast and drill and blast engineering in order to create an engineering guideline in PT.IMK. Additionally, blasting trials with air decking application is proposed in order to support the geoblast’s improvement. It is planned that these blasting trials will be conducted in 2022. In conclusion, it can be seen that integration of geoblast and D&B engineering in PT.IMK is relevant to improve current drill and blast current practice and applicable to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting.

Long-term water management is typically ignored in mine closure planning. A review of 73 mine closure plans dating from 2007 to 2013 shows that, on average, relinquishment is proposed to be achieved in 11 years. A separate review of 57 mines in actual closure shows that only five have so far achieved relinquishment with an average closure period of 14 years after production cessation. The remaining 91 per cent of sites in closure have an average closure duration to date of 21 years - and still going.A common issue among those sites in closure is water management, with a further common issue being acid and metaliferous drainage (AMD). Of the closure plans that were reviewed only one site had allowance for long-term (>50 years) of water treatment. Of the sites in actual closure 25 per cent have reported that they expect such long-term water treatment, with many acknowledging that in perpetuity treatment is probable.Clearly there is a gap between what is being allowed in closure plans and the reality of closure. There are a number of factors leading to the optimism of the closure plans, including unrealistic assumptions, pressures to reduce closure cost provisions and the technical complexity of many AMD issues.Long-term water management is a reality that needs to be acknowledged and addressed. The Porgera gold deposit in the Papua New Guinea highlands contains about 387 tonnes of gold. The results of its exploration show the benefits of persistence and commitment to this difficult deposit. The mineralization consists of a complex intermix of auriferous and argentiferous sulphides, gold tellurides and free gold as disseminations, veins, stockworks and breccia matrix. Its deposition was structurally contolled within a system of mafic diorite intrusions and adjacent sediments. Two styles of alteration accompany the mineralization. Gold grades vary erratically throughout the deposit. Over a period of 22 years nine phases of exploration have been undertaken by six companies or consortia of companies. Surface rock chip sampling, geological mapping followed by scout and systematic grid diamond drilling have been the most successful exploration tools. Exhaustive metallurgical process investigations and economic evaluations of mining options have been invaluable in guiding the exploration towards defining the ore body. Impetus was given to the project during times of flagging enthusiasm by several important discoveries and a breakthrough in the metallurgical processing approach. The discovery of high grade ore deep in Zone VII in 1984 turned this marginal deposit into a potentially very large gold mine.

The impact computers are having in geoscience is distinctly mixed. In the petroleum industry where much of the data are based on geophysics, computers have become an integral part of exploration and reservoir evaluation and simulation. In the minerals industry, the trend to computerisation is more advanced in some disciplines than others. Geophysical and remote sensing data are routinely processed and imaged using state of the art computer techniques. Mine surveying, planning, design and resource and ore reserve estimation are now all predominantly reliant on computers. However senior management of many companies, particularly in the mineral exploration industry, are still reticent to fully embrace the technology. 3D computer modelling of geology and orebody delineation is still largely in its infancy. Two current and significant drawbacks to the routine use of computer modelling of geology in both mining and exploration are the tedious and time consuming modelling process and the lack of seamless interaction between 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD) software and geographical information systems (GIS) which are largely 2D in their data treatment. There is an urgent need for a 3D spatial information system (eg 3D GIS) with intelligent and rapid modelling functionality. One of the keys to the successful building of 3D geological computer models begins with data base structure and design to ensure that there is no loss of data fidelity through data capture, storage, manipulation and modelling. Once a model is constructed, the latest generations of visualisation software provide sophisticated environments over a range of hardware platforms for visualisation in both mono and stereo viewing. Exploration in the vicinity of the abandoned Mt Coolon mine has shown that the shape and attitude of the quartz lode is controlled by the interaction between the lode and a converging syncline. Gold grades within the lode are enhanced along intersections with a welded ignimbrite, and decline rapidly where the lode intersects unwelded ignimbrite. Mineralogy and textures indicate the vein has an epithermal origin modified by a later intrusive event.

The Haveluck gold deposit, located 2.5km north of Meekatharra, contained 1,284,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.8 g/t gold of drill delineated proved and probable ore prior to commencement of production. Following successful laboratory and pilot scale testing a decision was made to establish a 300,000 tonnes per year heap leaching operation. The ore, crushed to minus 100mm was stacked on an impermeable membrane and irrigated with a dilute cyanide solution. Gold was recovered from the resulting pregnant solutions by adsorption onto activated carbon and gold bullion produced in a modified Zadra process desorption plant. From the commencement of mining it was obvious that a high percentage of fine material was being produced which would adversely affect the percolation of the cyanide solution-through the leach heaps. A screening plant was incorporated into the crushing circuit which provided an oversize product satisfactory for heap leaching and an undersize for carbon-in-pulp treatment. Plant design provided for the slurrying of minus 0.8mm ore before feeding to the pachuca tanks. Initial practice was to use four tanks for gold dissolution and two for carbon contact. Vibrating screens were used through- out for the carbon-ore separation and the loaded carbon was stripped in the existing desorption plant.

This paper outlines the rationale for the location of the crusher, geotechnical analysis and basis of ground support design, design and scheduling of the chamber and supporting excavations as well as the operational outcomes and lessons learned. Contributions from mining operations, planning, geotechnical and infrastructure teams enabled the Crusher Station One excavation to be completed on schedule, with opportunities taken for underground mining and infrastructure to work safely in parallel to deliver crusher station infrastructure on schedule. Installation of crusher infrastructure was ongoing at the time of writing.

The paper describes a geostatistical structural analysis of an 80 square mile lease of the Athabasca tar sands. Each step of the analysis is presented with the ultimate objective of condensing the principal structural characteristics of the chosen regionalised variables into the opera- tional form of the variogram model. The variogram model is then used to form kriged local and global estimates, with the corresponding estimation errors.

Throughout the Kalgoorlie Field the dominant factors influencing all planned exploratory work are: firstly, the general geology of the district, and, secondly, the lode fracture pattern. Superimposed on these, there are innumerable faulting problems which tend to complicate the search for ore.In this paper it is proposed to deal primarily with the lode fracture pattern and to touch on the general geology only insofar as it affects ore distribution. So much has been written on Kalgoorlie geology that it would be impossible to review the literature adequately in a brief paper such as this. The basic facts of rock types and rock distribution are well established and the broad structure of the field is known in the central portion, though it is less well established towards the northern and southern ends.The latest descriptions of the general geology are those of Stillwell (1), and Gustafson (2), -and these represent the basis of current knowledge.GENERAL GEOLOGY.The field is six miles long and about one mile wide, the long axis trending north-west. The "Golden Mile," or heart of the mining 'area, covers a length of three miles in the southern section, and consists of a central core of quartz dolerite greenstone which merges into uralitic quartz 'dolerite on its western margin. In my talk this afternoon I intend to cover a brief history, some of the recent experiences and an overview of the McArthur River project.If we consider the themes of this forum, Obstacles and Opportunities, I can confidently say that in attempting to develop the McArthur River deposit Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) must have encountered almost every obstacle that can be imagined. However the large size and the high grade of the deposit has ensured an opportunity, from which it is very difficult to walk away from.The McArthur River Here's Your Chance (HYC) Deposit is located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was discovered by Mount Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955 and is one of the largest known sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits. The deposit has been the subject of numerous investigations and considerable expenditure culminating in a major feasibility study in 1979. There were a number of factors which prevented development, these being the size of the project, the fine grained mineralization, geographical location, market, social and capital cost. The latter had been estimated in the 1979 study to be $800 million at that time.

The start up operations of Western Mining Corporation's Kalgoorlie nickel smelter encountered troubles due to the high magnesia content of the concentrates. The flash smelter slags, with higher than normal magnesia content, had a much higher melting point than the normal low-magnesia, predominantly fayalite slags usually produced in nickel smelting. Investigations were made of the structures, melting points and viscosities of the Kalgoorlie smelter slags, as produced, and with additions of silica or lime.

Underlying the 15 million tonne, high grade Hellyer volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit of western Tasmania is an extensive, well developed, and well preserved stringer system. Pervasive alteration of the footwall mafic volcanics occurred as the hydrothermal system initiated. Mineralogical zoning exists within the footwall alteration pipe, with a central siliceous core giving way to zones of chlorite, chlorite-carbonate, sericite-chlorite, and finally sericite-quartz on the margins (stringer envelope zone). However, the alteration morphology and zonation is not symmetrical around the central siliceous core; eastward the alteration zones are steeply dipping and terminate abruptly under the massive sulphide, while westward they extend out under the ore body in a blanket fashion. Geologic evidence indicates that the pervasive alteration started with the development of sericite-quartz which was subsequently overprinted by chlorite and finally quartz-sericite as the hydrothermal system became focused towards the centre of the stringer system.
