During the 1950's there was a flurry of activity on the design of main ventilation shafts for mines. More recently, a new ana- lysis was commissioned in relation to the multi-shaft, nuclear waste isolation facili- ties currently under design in the United States. This paper presents the major find- ings of that study and should prove of value as a reference in the design of proposed new shafts. An overview of mine shaft resistance introduces the effects of the shaft walls, fittings, conveyances and shaft stations. Each of these is analyzed in turn. A com- pletely new technique is described, which facilitates the estimation of wall resis- tance. The effect of size of a conveyance is quantified and shown to be dominant when the cage occupies more than 30 per cent of the shaft cross-section. The dynamic effects of a moving conveyance are also analyzed.

The JK Drop Weight test was developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in the early 1990s as a means of characterising ore for the purposes of AG/SAG mill and crusher modelling. It has since been used extensively worldwide in the minerals industry as a key ore characterisation test which produces parameters which are used in comminution circuit design and optimisation. The test generates three parameters which are used in the AG/SAG mill model of the JKSimMet software. The resistance of the ore to high energy (impact) breakage is quantified with the A and b parameters. The oreÆs resistance to low energy (abrasion) breakage is measured using the ta parameter. The accuracy and precision of the results of the JK drop weight test are of great importance given that the parameters are key inputs in the design of such capital intensive items as SAG mills. Plant optimisation exercises also rely on the accuracy of the parameters to assist with improving the performance of an existing circuit. A thorough analysis of the accuracy and precision of the parameters generated by the JK drop weight test has now been undertaken by JKTech Pty Ltd (JKTech). An experimental program was designed using statistical methods to plan a hierarchical set of 24 drop weight tests on homogeneous material. Each stage of the test was identified and incorporated into the experimental design so that the contribution to the overall error of each stage could be quantified, including the effect of operator. The data were analysed by nested analysis of variance. An overall analysis of the A, b and ta parameters generated from the test program has now quantified the variance of these parameters more thoroughly than ever before. Using the results for the impact parameters, an analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of these variances on final SAG mill comminution circuit design. The results will also be used to refine the comparative testing procedures currently in use by licensees worldwide.

Direct relationships between rock texture and BWi (grindability index) have been established based on geological and metallurgical information supported by optical microscopy observations, gathered from 731 samples.Each recognised rock texture is observed to be related to a certain BWi range and, this texture is also characteristic of distinct lithological subunits (recognisable at mapping scale). Therefore, this relationship may provide an important tool for early milling in situ estimation.Since each textural type is a response to rock formation conditions, the causality of the relationship between BWi and texture is based on such conditions and, particularly, on the interfacial free energy among its components.According to the abovementioned textural features, the greater the free interfacial energy between mineral components, the greater the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries and, consequently, the greater the necessary energy required for milling.If the textural evidence indicates that the rock was able to adjust the shape and/or size of its components – in a natural tendency of all systems to minimise energy– then the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries will be lower.

Ore definition for final stope planning is often a challenging prospect in underground (UG) gold mines which exhibit high geological and grade variability. Unlike the grade control (GC) scenario in an open pit (OP), the ability for the mining geologist to plan a sampling campaign which effectively characterises the underlying mineralisation is fraught with difficulty. UG sampling patterns are strongly clustered and typically not dense enough to characterise the spatial and statistical properties. Very commonly, sample volumes are not large enough to provide a reliable grade estimate of the surrounding rock. These factors critically affect our ability to accurately map out ore positions and estimate metal quantities.At Sunrise Dam, traditional UG sampling and modelling techniques have proven to be an unreliable strategy for successful stope planning and extraction. The problem was first observed during the final cut-back in the open pit for which the mineral resource model was constructed from UG diamond drilling. Open Pit grade control reconciliations were strongly positive for both tonnage and grade compared to the resource model. Underground workings missed significant quantities of ore which was laterally defined by open pit reverse circulation (RC) GC drilling. Upon examination it was realised that the cause of the problem was one of inadequate sample density and sample support, the implications of which potentially affected the entire UG mine.As part of a broader study into underground grade control procedures, detailed reconciliation of initial stope production from the GQ domain also pointed to inadequate sampling as a major constraint to effective grade control and reserve conversion.To overcome this deficiency, dense 115 mm wet RC grade control drilling and conditional simulation modelling has been successfully implemented with the intent to replicate the grade control process in the open pit. The increase in sample density and sample volume has proven to be a very effective tool for mapping out highly complex mineralisation. A marked improvement in stope definition, reserve conversion and Mine to Mill reconciliations has been demonstrated on the back of an innovative approach to UG grade control.CITATION:Clark, F and Carswell, J T, 2014. BHP has used many innovative techniques when recruiting its workforce for the Cannington Project. Looking for a balance of experience and enthusiasm it was necessary to develop pre-selection tests to reduce the initial number of applicants to a manageable number for first interviews in Townsville. Success at this stage led to an applicant, and their spouse, to go through a second interview at the mine site. The full process from application to job offer took up to six months, but the results were felt to be worth the effort. The approach taken has resulted in a highly motivated and flexible workforce. This paper outlines the philosophies behind CanningtonÆs recruitment process, highlights some of the issues associated with the approach, and offers some measures of the outcomes.

This paper presents the research achievements from these studies, including a rock mass quality evaluation method, cavability prediction, fragmentation evaluation, caving mechanisms, a computerised production scheduling model and the optimised draw control system. The main features of the block caving system in the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine are also discussed.

Although efforts towards producing a `total quality rockfill product' have allowed cemented rockfill costs to be reduced considerably, there is still tremendous potential for further cost reductions. Cemented rockfill costs range from approximately $7 to $12 (US) per tonne of fill placed. Approximately 50 per cent of the rockfill costs are associated with cement costs. A large portion of the remaining 50 per cent is associated with labour and materials handling costs. Several Canadian underground mines utilise haulage trucks and/or conventional belt conveyors to distribute the rockfill. However, due to the restrictive nature of the underground environment, these current materials handling systems have limitations (ie spillage from trucks, dust from conveyors). The Sicon conveyor system (developed in Sweden) has considerable potential for replacing these current methods. The Sicon conveyor utilises a revolutionary approach - the conveyor belt is folded over upon itself (forming a tear drop shape) so that the transported material is completely encased within the belt. The Sicon conveyor's ability to negotiate very tight comers (without transfer points) makes the conveyor very appealing for underground mining applications. An analysis comparing the pros and cons associated with the Sicon conveyor system versus conventional materials handling systems will be presented in this paper.

The Australian underground coal mining industry is undergoing major changes. This paper analyses the technologies presently being researched in mines, and discusses their utilisation as major contributors in the underground mining of coal in Australia over the next 20 years. It describes the problems that underground mining of the year 2000 will face and the possible solutions to those problems based upon results of present day research. Methods, equipment and organisational requirements are outlined. Developments in micro-electronics, computerisation and monitoring will require a new look into human resource development, education and training, and organisation to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Nickel Rim Depth Cu-Ni-PGE deposit, discovered by Falconbridge Limited in 1993, illustrates several trends in exploration in the Sudbury area. Recent discoveries tend to be deep, high grade, footwall hosted, close to or straddle property boundaries and made using a multi-disciplinarian exploration approach that integrates economic considerations with geology, metal geochemistry and geophysics (borehole EM). The Nickel Rim deposit occurs down dip of Inco's Victor Deep deposit (4.2 million tonnes at 2.25 per cent Ni, 7.30 per cent Cu) in the eastern margin of the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) at a depth of 2650 m. Before commencing drilling an economic evaluation was done to determine the minimum size needed to be economic at the expected depths and determine the expected value of an exploration venture. The subsequent surface exploration program discovered a drill indicated, undiluted mineral inventory of 1.6 million tonnes of 1.58 per cent Ni, 10.13 per cent Cu, 4.17g/t Pt and 3.50 g/t Pd including 519 000 tonnes of 4.13 per cent Ni, 25.53 per cent Cu, 9.76 g/t Pt and 8.42 g/t Pd. The deposit is hosted by gneiss, migmatite, gabbro and pseudotachylite (Sudbury Breccia) 100 m below the base of the SIC.

A mineral exploration manager's prime function is to provide a frame- work within which new mine production can be achieved. As part of this framework, the manager should know his employerb future requirements, and should direct exploration towards those particular mineral commodities which indicate satisfactory growth in consumption and price. Selection of these commodities can be assisted by studies of world reserves, and long term trends in price and consumption. Exploration planning is most efficient with an assured and reasonably uniform supply of funds.

Carbonatites - igneous carbonate-silicate rocks - host the world's major resources for niobium, phosphorous and REE (rare earth elements).Carbonatites represent the least common products of mantle and igneous processes and their emplacement is principally controlled by lithospheric domes and rift structures. Intrusive carbonatites frequently comprise carbonate-amphibole-apatite-pyrocWore assemblages, occur as plugs, cores, dykes, sills sheets, veins, pipes and irregular bodies, are gecichemically anomalous (Ba, Ca, Cl, F, Hf, Mg, Nb, P, REE, S, Sc, SO4, Sri Tb, Ti, D, V, Zr), are associated with alkaline silica-undersaturated igneous rocks forming carbonatite complexes, and display large, intensive alteration haloes. Also carbonatites are similar to limestones, prone to weathering, and may form thick laterite profiles.Magmatic ores (pyrocWore, apatite, bastnaesite, monazite, magnetite, baddeleyite, phlogopite, fluorite, calcite) and weathering related residual and supergene ores (pyrochlore, apatite, magnetite, anatase, vermiculite) are currently being mined on all continents except Australia. Australia is underexplored for carbonatite associated primary magmatic and especially residual-supergene ore deposits. Chances are very high for the finding of new carbonatite, occurrences and associated ores.

The aim of this research is to develop a model through which the appropriate paste recipe parameters, for example solid content and cement content, can be derived given the stope specific requirements such as stope dimensions, required strength and curing time. A large number of samples and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted at the Angas Zinc Mine (AZM) paste plant and testing facility. Samples were varied in tailings solids content, cement content and sand content. The results of this testing were modelled to determine the UCS relationship to each of the parameters. The output of this modelling was an easy-to-use program that outputs the design mixture given the stope dimensions and required stope backfill-curing time. This allowed flexibility within the mining schedule for curing times of cemented paste backfill stopes. The optimised schedule using the stope specific mix design, when compared to the standard 14-day curing time used previously, resulted in a smoother weekly mine production schedule. For the modelled 12-week period (one quarter) the 14-day curing time would result in an eight-day shutdown of the mill. The cost for each shutdown is in the order of $125 000/d. Due to the unique nature of each mine’s tailings, this exact outcome would not be directly applicable to another paste fill site. However, the process in this report could be followed for another site to achieve a system similar to the output of this project. In an open pit mining, ensuring stability of rock slope has been one of the major challenges. As the instability of rock slopes can results in slope failures; consequently, endanger the lives of workers, affect mining operations, and often lead to economic losses. Therefore, it is practical important to study the stability of rock slopes to ensure safe, smooth, and effective mining. The stability of rock slope of about 130 m height at Higashi-shikagoe limestone quarry, which has experienced slope failures four times since 1996, was assessed. The rock mass at the quarry is consists of mainly limestone, schalstein and slate rocks intersected by clay seams of about 70 m thick at footwall of the rock slope. Previously, the effects of limestone excavation at the foot of the rock slope and shear failure due to rainfall infiltration have been investigated. Although clay is widely known to plays a vital role in the stability of slopes in engineering projects including mines, but its impacts on slope deformation at the study quarry are not adequately examined. Therefore, the present study addressed the impact of presence of clay on slope deformation at Higashi-shikagoe limestone quarry by employing both field displacement measurements and numerical simulation. Firstly, surface displacements measured by automated polar system (APS) for over eight years were analysed to understand the overall characteristics of the slope deformation. The measured results show that the displacement gradually decreases with time. The maximum displacement of about 100 mm was observed at middle of the rock slope. Secondly, the effect of deterioration and plastic behaviour of the thick clay layer were simulated using two-dimensional finite element method (2D FEM). The simulated results reveal that the clay exhibited deterioration by water contact and plastic behaviour arising from mining activities at the footwall of the clay zone. Based on the characteristics of the measured and simulated results, it was found that the displacement induced by the effect of deterioration of clay is more noticeable at the north side of the quarry whereas displacement induced by excavation is quite significant at the south side of the quarry if clay behaves as an elasto-plastic material.

A critical appraisal of the wide variety of processes used in the pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals shows that there is a strong physico-chemical and, in particular thermodynamic, basis for the variety. Based on this, a simple classif- ication scheme has been developed which makes it possible to understand the methods for extracting individual metals and non-metals pyrometallurgically and to assess which are the more attractive routes. The analysis presented shows why there are essentially two broad routes for pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals; viz., the reduce- refine and the refine-reduce routes. Halides have the role in pyrometall- urgical processing of producing pure compounds for subsequent reduction. The criteria which determine the selection of reduction method for oxide raw materials and intermediate halides (e.g., use of carbon, hydrogen, a more reactive metal or electrowinning) are examined critically in the paper. The treatment of sulfide raw materials is considered also, particularly the criterion for smelting sulfides directly to the metal.

A series of low shock energy water resistant emlulsion based explosives have been developed by combining inert materials, such as Perlite P500, into the formulation. The material handling, water resistance and explosive properties of these mixtures were determined as a function of inert additive type, density, charge diameter and emulsion base. Of the emulsion bases tested Emulite produced the best and most stable low density mixtures ranging in density from 0.8 to 1.35 g/cm3 producing velocity of detonations (unconfined) ranging from 3000 to 5500 nits. The mixtures could be detonated successfully at these densities at diameters as low as 25mm. Low shock mixtures formed by combining Emulite with Perlite P500 were successfully trailed at the Cadjebut zinc mine in Western Australia. The performance of the explosive, at three densities, was monitored using both continuous and point to point VOD techniques. The fragmentation produced by the blasts were compared by photographic analysis. During this trial the low shock emulsion mixtures were shown to be as effective as the currently used explosives (packaged emulsion) at a significantly reduced cost.

The Mount Sisa orebody on Misima Island, P.N.G., consists of goldsilver mineralisation associated with massive carbonate and amorphous iron-manganese oxides in fractures and breccia matrix. The orebody forms the northern extension of the Umuna deposit, which lies within a three kilometre strike length of a northwest trending, 300 metres wide, high angle fault zone. The structure is deeply oxidised, with the magniferous oxide material resulting from oxidation of carbonate. The wallrocks are metamorphosed basement psammopelites and basic volcanic rocks, extensively intruded by microgranodiorite. These are dominantly epidotised and sericitised. The precious metals are associated with anomalous Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, As, Ba, Ga, Sb, and Mo. Many of the features of the Mount Sisa mineralisation are characteristic of volcanic-hosted epithermal deposits of western North America.Lithologic and textural gradation is observed between the carbonate hydrothermal breccia-fill at Mount Sisa, and the quartz dominated brecciafill and dilational fracture-fill mineralisation which forms most of the Umuna deposit to the south. This gradational relationship is analogous to that in the Amethyst-OH vein system at Creede, Colorado, where it is shown to be indicative of deposition from laterally migrating fluids.

The Radio Hill nickel-copper deposit is located 30 km south of Karratha. It is a new discovery in an area where similar mineralization had been previously discovered at Mt. Scholl and Ruth Well. Radio Hill is the first massive Ni-Cu sulphide deposit of economic significance to have been located in the Western Pilbara.Preliminary studies indicate that the sulphide mineralization occurs within gabbros, pyroxenites and peridotites of a basic igneous cumulate layered sequence. Primary sulphides have been subsequently remobilized and concentrated as stringer and massive mineralization. This is tentatively attributed to the intrusion of a further gabbroic body.The deposit appears to be of the gabbroic association type with a Ni:Cu ratio varying from 1:4 in the outer parts of the mineralized envelope to 1:0.9 towards the central zones. In drill core observations, chalcopyrite surrounding pyrrhotite was noted in many instances. Drilling has so far delineated a body developed over a strike length of 600 m and a horizontal width of up to 25 m. The mineralization plunges 20° to the southwest with a southerly dip varying from 75° in the west to about 20° - 30° in the east.The deposit is a leaf-shaped ore zone, plunging southwest from a vertical depth of 17 m in the north to 300 m in the south. The massive sulphides occur as lensoid masses within this zone. A geological resource of up to 2.5 million tonnes at 1.5 per cent Ni and l.4 per cent Cu is indicated.The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite, with significant cobalt, platinum group metals and gold. Tellurides of Pd, Bi and Pb were detected by scanning electron microprobe within the pyrrhotite and other trace metals include Zn and native tin. Massive magnetite is sometimes associated with the massive pyrrhotite intersections.A test on one composite massive sulphide sample showed that pyrrhotite is present mainly as the non-magnetic hexagonal variety and only 10 per cent is present as magnetic monoclinic pyrrhotite.The deposit has no surface expression and its identification was based mainly Oil drilling targets generated by geophysical methods. No secondary minerals have been observed in association with the primary sulphides, even though the deposit is only 17 m below surface in the northern part.

If a straight line should be drawn on the map (Fig 1) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to thewest, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the outh Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about it central portion, the zone may aptly be termed 'The Great Reefton Gold Belt.'The occurrence of so many gold mines along this particular strip of country is not at all a matter of chance, but is the outcome of cause and effect. Farming on bauxite residue using screw propelled equipment (SPE) has been commonly practised to accelerate dewatering and as it promotes consolidation and enhances storage capacity. However, it is unclear when and how often farming should be conducted during the transition of bauxite residue from slurry to dry solids and how deep each slurry deposition should be. To address this issue, three desiccation tanks were established in the laboratory to investigate how much farming could enhance the desiccation and consolidation of tailings. The cuboid tanks, of 350 mm in height and 300 mm in width and length and with an opening on the top, were placed on load cells to monitor the water loss during desiccation and were instrumented with moisture and suction sensors designed and developed at the University of Queensland to measure the water content profile of the residue. The bauxite residue, composed of silt-size particles with low plasticity, was hydraulically deposited in the tanks as a slurry at 27% solid content, resulting in 100 mm depth of solid material settling. Evaporation was enhanced by placing two identical electrical fans above the tanks. Two phases were conducted. In the first phase, the two tanks were left untouched for evaluating non farmed conditions and for calibrating sensors, while in the second phase, three tanks were subjected to atemporal farming using purpose-built screw propelled equipment. The experiment was terminated when the residue was completely desiccated. This paper reports on the instrumented tank set-up and the results obtained to date.
