Sedimentary structures are described from the WiIlyama Complex, New South Wales. Their presence confirms lithological layering within the metasediments as bedding. These primary structures occur not only in low grade rocks as previously reported by other workers, but also in areas of medium and high grade metamorphism.Sedimentary structures include graded beds, cross beds, ripple marks, and ball and pillow structures.The observed parallelism of the early schistosity and bedding in the Broken Hill area has previously led to the idea of transposition by isoclinal folding.In the areas mapped, small scale transposition is precluded on the basis of1. uniform facing of sedimentary structures over wide areas, and2. the existence of large areas in which the early schistosity is oblique to bedding.

With the sinking of the new No. 3 Shaft and the increasing depth and northward movement of the mining operations, improved ventilation of the mine workings became necessary and it was decided to sink a new upcast ventilation shaft midway between No. 2 Shaft and No. 3 Shaft.The shaft is finished to 16 ft. internal diameter and connects with the mine workings at the 2,600-ft. level. It is lined with unreinforced Concrete approximately 12 in. thick. The shaft sinking routine was drilling, blasting and mucking by hand using a 27-cub. ft. capacity bucket. The concrete lining was poured in conjunction with the sinking and was normally finished within 30 to 50 ft. of the shaft bottom.

Accurate geometric models of orebodies establish the framework for reliable mineral resource estimates that provide a basis for further exploration and mine planning, as well as for financial models that ultimately determine the economic viability of a deposit. Traditional, explicit geometric modelling techniques that are utilised for resource modelling by the general mining software packages, such as MineSight«, involve manually digitising interpreted ore outlines that must be carefully linked to create valid geometric solid models. An alternative, implicit modelling method, employed by LeapfrogTM software relies on a fast method of global interpolation, which offers several advantages over traditional modelling techniques. Although previous case studies have documented the relative efficiencies of the two approaches, the accuracy of the two methods has not been previously quantified and compared. This study quantifies the accuracy of solid models created using explicit and implicit methods, and compares the differences between the models. Solid models of the Doris Hinge vein gold deposit (located in the Hope Bay district, Nunavut, Canada) are constructed from preliminary and follow-up drilling data using both modelling techniques. The accuracies of the solid models generated using preliminary drilling data are determined by measuring the 3D distance between the surface of the models and the actual contact location defined by the follow-up drilling data. Additional comparisons based on volume, cross-sectional area and surface differences were made between both phase 1 solid models and solid models constructed from phase 2 drilling information. The overall results of this study find that the MineSight« and LeapfrogTM solid model accuracies are virtually the same, and that their volume, cross-sectional area, and surface differences are comparable. This study concludes that the implicit modelling technique generates accurate solid models that can be used in place of explicit models as ore shells for resource estimation in certain circumstances.

Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

The Matakan Unit of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea is a highly fossiliferous lagoonal deposit containing numerous coal pods and lenses. The unit is strati graphically part of the massive reefal Lelet Limestone of Miocence age. These organic-rich sediments have a high hydrocarbon potential as evident from microscopical observations as well as Rock- Eval pyrolysis data. The coal is varied in regard to dominant macerals, vitrinite being predominant in some parts and pollen and spores present in sufficient proportions to constitute a cannel coal elsewhere. A high primary productivity and anoxic sediment pore waters or just above sediment - water interface have given rise to sufficient organic matter accumulations to yield a potential hydrocarbon source rock. Atomic H/C ratios of the coals are between kerogen type III and type II mainly, expressing the mixed nature of the coal and that of the associated sediments is type II. Early generated hydrocarbons (exsudatinite) have formed from pollen exines filling the pollen cavities and in places filling micro- fissures in the surrounding vitrinite.

The Lanfranchi Nickel mine is located approximately 48 km south of Kambalda in Western Australia. Mining first commenced in the mid-1970s under the previous owner, Western Mining Corporation Ltd. After two years on care and maintenance, Panoramic Resources (previously known as Sally Malay Mining Ltd) purchased the operation in November 2004. The site currently produces approximately 10?000 tonnes of nickel metal annually from approximately 430?000 tonnes of ore. The Ore is mined from four main orebodies; Deacon, Helmut South, Lanfranchi and Schmitz. The Helmut South orebody is situated approximately 790 m below surface and extends to a resource depth of 940 m. Horizontal thickness of the orebody ranges from 10 m to 45 m in width, with the average being 30 m. Previous mining at the Lanfranchi operations specifically the Helmut orebody, had a history of seismic activity. When Panoramic Resources acquired the operation it was decided that seismicity was going to be an issue and therefore a mining method needed to be selected that could effectively manage this potential risk. The dip of the orebody is quite shallow at 45º, with a 30º plunge to the south . The hanging-wall comprises of very weak ultramafics. Due to these factors the orebody posed several mining challenges. To safely and effectively mine the Helmut South orebody in the Lanfranchi Nickel mine, underhand cut and fill mining was selected as the most appropriate mining method. Paste fill comprising of cemented gold tailings was the backfill of choice. This paper is intended to convey some of the key learnings from the use of a mining method that has not been commonly practiced in Australia.

A new approach to resource estimation at the exploration stage is emerging, based on the application of simple software techniques. The techniques combine the power of interactive graphics with proven database, analysis and estimation tools. With effective use of these tools the geologist now has maximum chance of deriving a reliable structural and grade model from the limited exploration data. Unlike cutoff-based polygonal methods, the resultant geological model can immediately be used to evaluate any economic scenario.These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system. With the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, MINEX-3D makes the power of this new 'desktop geological modelling' accessible to most exploration geologists.

(Quality can be defined as that which is acceptable to the market and can be supplied with a predictable degree of uniformity and dependability at a low cost. The market for any mining product is downstream processing, whether it be an alumina refinery, a gold processing plant or a flotation plant. The cost of that downstream process is partly dependent on uniformity of its feed material both in physical and chemical terms. With more operations adopting procedures which require quality assurances in line with International Standards, from their raw material suppliers, miners must look to their grade control processes to provide uniformity and predicability.This is not a new concept. The mining industry has constantly been working with ahighly variable raw material supplied by Mother Nature, from whom we cannot demand quality assurances. Through the processes of exploration, resource and reserve definition, long and short term mine planning and day to day grade control an end product has been supplied which consistently meets our customers requirements, in an economic fashion. When any of these processes fail, then penalties are incurred which can range from increased mineral processing costs to loss of markets and in the ultimate case, failure of a mining operation.

The theory of sampling has progressed slowly over the last century. The concepts of correct sampling were known to mining engineers such as D W Brunton in the 19th century. It was recognised early in the 20th century that the Poisson distribution of particles carrying the target analyte was the key to the uncertainties between samples of a given mass. However, no efforts were made until the 1980s to determine the entire sampling distribution as a function of sample mass. The variance of sampling was made clear by Gy and others, but none attempted to determine the entire sample assay density function until J H Venter in South Africa applied the method of characteristic functions to the problem.Venter applied the method to a specific case of very low analyte concentrations in samples of very fine particle size where his assumption of constant sample mass was justified. When his general methodology is applied to the more general problem, it can be shown that the assumption of constant sample mass is no longer justified and leads to some anomalous results for sampling variance. Venter’s method can be expanded to allow for a statistically variable sample mass and to take into account the size distribution of particles that carry no analyte.This paper presents the basis of Venter’s work and shows how the approach can be easily modified to yield results for the variance that are consistent, for example, with the work of Gy. It is also demonstrated that the entire sampling distribution can be determined without undue computational burden when sufficient information on the material heterogeneity has been collected.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2014. A new type of rockbolting system, the self drilling rockbolt, has been studied to develop a 'single pass' bolt for use in rockbolt installation in underground engineering. This single pass bolt forms the basis of a Rapid Face Bolting system which will reduce the amount of time spent in securing a roof during the operation of a continuous miner in the development of a panel.The installation efficiency and anchorage tests were performed in the laboratory on the self drilling bolt and the traditional resin anchorage. bolt. The results of both bolts are cmmnared.

The total cost of horizontal development can be minimised by optimising the cost of each of the component operations (eg drilling, blasting, etc). Component costs should not be minimised. To optimise blasting results (ie the mean advance per round, muckpile characteristics and overbreak), operators need to optimise the blast design and drilling and blasting procedures. The costs of pulling extremely long (say >6 m) rounds, producing unnecessarily fine fragmentation, and minimising overbreak are excessively high. Operators should continually consider how they can shorten the cycle period by saving time at the face. To enable it to be matched to the pertinent rock properties, the blast design needs to be based on as much relevant experience as possible. To develop the most valid correlation between blasting results and blast design, the latter must be implemented carefully and accurately, but without sacrificing speed excessively. The total cost can often be reduced by using: 1. computer-controlled jumbos (to reduce the period and cost of drilling and to increase drilling accuracy); 2. larger diameter (51 mm to 64 mm) and longer (4.5 m to 6 m) blastholes; 3. at least three large diameter ( ¦89 mm) relief holes that are 0.2 m to 0.3 m longer than the blastholes; 4. explosive products that are selected on the basis of proven reliability and overall cost efficiency rather than price; and5. stemming (to increase the amount of effective work done by each kilogram of explosive and, hence, to reduce the powder factor and possibly the number of blastholes and the costs of drilling and initiation). Non-perimeter blastholes should be charged with ANFO or a bulk emulsion of established performance. Upper perimeter blastholes should be charged with a bulk explosive with a much lower effective density. But where geology varies considerably, greatest control over overbreak could possibly be achieved with the versatile pre-assembled charge shown in Figure 1. This paper presents numerous potential ways in which the total cost of development can be minimised. It concentrates on recommending blast design features and the safe, rapid, cost-effective implementation of designs.

The excavation of a tunnel through rock and mixed ground of basalt and silty clays presents a challenge to engineering organisations. Such was the situation facing the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) in constructing the 15.3 km, 5.5m dia. tunnel component of the new Western Trunk Sewerage System. The tunnel geology showed that there were two distinct components to the excavation - rock and mixed ground. By drawing on extensive experience in the use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM's) used previously by the MMBW and using techniques developed for predicting TBM per- formance, a comparison of the options of drill and blast versus TBM was made. The conclusion was that TBM methods would provide the best solution to the problem. Tenders were called for the supply of a TBM. A performance specification was used to attract tenders offering designs which re- flected the state of the art on an internation- al level. Particular features required by the MMBW were included in the specification. The excavation planning and operation are described in this paper. The production achieved has shown that the TBM can very adequately handle rock excavation (best weekly production 167.9m). Extreme conditions of mixed ground with heavy groundwater inflows have been handled using an auxiliary thrust system to maintain gripper reaction through the soft ground encountered.

This study assessed the deformation failure characteristics of rock-coal composites with different height ratios. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted using an acoustic emission monitoring system and XTDIC three-dimensional full-field strain measurement system. The results showed that with the increase in rock-coal height ratios, the uniaxial compressive strength of composite samples increased from 5.26 MPa to 14.61 MPa. The evolution of the deformation localisation zone of the composite samples is closely related to the initiation and propagation of the primary cracks in the coal samples. At the moment when the main fracture of the coal samples occurs, there is a large drop after the peak of the stress-strain curve of the composite samples, and the height of the rock samples increased to varying degrees, which indicated that the failure of the coal samples induced the rebound deformation of the rock samples. With the increase in rock-coal height ratios, the rebound deformation amount of the rock samples decreased from 0.042 mm to 0.008 mm, and the rebound deformation rate decreased from 0.210 per cent to 0.010 per cent. Meanwhile, the rock samples’ rebound deformation releases part of the elastic energy to act on the coal sample, further contributing to the destruction of the coal samples. Compared with single composite coal samples, the coal samples of the composite samples have much more failures. In addition, with the increase in rock-coal height ratio, the input energy density, elastic energy density, post-peak release energy density, and residual elastic energy density of the composite samples increased, the dissipation energy density decreased, and the percentage of pre-peak elastic energy density increased from 98.56 per cent to 99.86 per cent. These results revealed the deformation failure characteristics of rock-coal composite with different height ratios and provided a theoretical reference for understanding the underground dynamic rock failures.

Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine û NewcrestÆs flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of AustraliaÆs steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.

Mining and tunnelling share many commonalities (eg confined working environments, excavation equipment and processes), but of significance is an overarching commitment to provide safe work conditions and environments. This includes reducing exposure to hazardous airborne contaminants such as dust and fumes, in particular Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) and Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM), with methods that are environmentally sustainable. In mining, wet methods are common to suppress airborne contaminants, however these methods are reliant on water availability, can be less effective for respirable dust, can have implications for environmental water contamination and can increase maintenance on mining equipment. In contrast, the use of dust scrubbers that provide filtration of airborne contaminants are well established in the tunnelling industry and frequently used to provide spot extraction (dust control at the source) and act often as a complement to the main ventilation system. This paper sought to learn more about the advancements in tunnelling that could be readily applied to mining to improve health outcomes. The paper includes a review of literature and legislation related to health and sustainability and interviews with three respected, and experienced managers from the global tunnel construction industry. It is from these interviews that the focus of the paper turns to Sydney’s WestConnex underground tunnel network and the success of stage 3A M4-M5 construction link. The findings position dust scrubbers as integral to the overall project success as they enabled a Tunnel Production Line (TPL), where multiple stages of construction could take place simultaneously by controlling high volumes of dust at the source. The findings also suggest efficiencies of using mobile scrubbers, both track mounted and hydraulic stepping systems, to accompany road headers and other equipment throughout the excavation process. The findings have transferable applications to underground mining processes in which workers are exposed to high volumes of dust (eg drill and blast) or situations in which dust control at the source, mobility and flexibility offer value (eg room and pillar mining).

Process engineering principles are used to analyse the features of leaching processes for large masses of low grade, unprocessed ore. Different performance characteristics are related to the numerous variants of these processes. The variant for which reagent enters a heap only via the input solution is further subdivided into three modes of operation. The three modes may occur in testwork and full-scale operations; the effects of process variables on the rate of the process are completely different in each mode. The mode can be identified by the time at which reagent first appears in the pregnant solution. It is related to the ratio of the height of the heap and the thickness of a band of ore in which the reactions are localised. Synthesis of the phenomena occurring within a heap via a computer program has produced a quantitative relation for the reaction band thickness. The program has been validated for several different systems. The overall achievement is that the mode of operation and the rate of the process can be forecast before column testwork is commenced. Some applications of the outcomes to testwork, process design and operational tactics are described.

The 2 Moz Vogue mineral resource is a recent discovery at the Sunrise Dam gold mine (SDGM), lying approximately 600 m vertically below the Sunrise Dam open pit. Unlike most other lodes, which are dominated either by steep vein sets or shallow high-strain (shear) zones, it lies broadly in the hinge of a folded felsic porphyry body, where it cuts intermediate volcanic lavas and volcaniclastic rocks and is not specifically concentrated at a lithofacies contact. The mineralisation is controlled by a complex interplay of moderate to shallow, west-dipping high-strain zones that are transected by irregular and discontinuous high-grade, north-west-, north–south- and east–west-trending breccia sheets that initially caused problems with attempts to model broad domains. However, by combining the structural controls and styles with the distribution of gold, arsenic, sulfur and antimony, we have improved opportunities for scheduling, extracting and processing the most appropriate material considering the current mining and processing constraints.The early delineation process for the Vogue lode revealed a significant mineral resource for the SDGM, coupled with the recognition of some potentially difficult downstream implications for mining and processing. The ultimate success of mining at Vogue will be a consequence of combining standardised data collection and geological modelling techniques with the results of the novel innovative techniques applied at an early stage of the project.Innovation (in the truest sense) drives change and application to deliver efficient and effective outcomes. Initial data generation and interpretation in lodes above Vogue provided a sound geological model based on strong structural foundations, leading to ideas that could be tested and validated by stress inversion analysis and modelling simulations. Geomechanical modelling simulations, based on the structural analysis, then provided an insight into both the structural and fluid evolution of the system and highlighted target areas. This promoted support for deeper drilling and sampling, which lead to the discovery of Vogue.With additional data, the structural model for Vogue was re-engineered through combination with geochemical and hyperspectral analysis and detailed geological and geostatistical domaining. Initial poor results from metallurgical tests from a small batch sample refocused efforts to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation and profiling (geometallurgy) and combine this data with the composite geological-structural-geochemical model. Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates a large base metal property near Bathurst, New Brunswick in eastern Canada. Nominal capacity for the underground mining operation and concentrator is 10 250 DMT/day. Four concentrates are produced by differential flotation technology to recover minerals containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. Two characteristics of the Brunswick ores have a major impact on mineral processing operations. The mineralogy of the ore is complex with a total sulphide mineral content of 85 per cent. In addition, the ore is extremely fine-grained, and satisfactory liberation is difficult to achieve. These characteristics directly influence flotation selectivity and thereby affect metallurgical performance. Significant improvements in metallurgical performance have been achieved through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment. Current operating practice and the metallurgical advancements are detailed.

The Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada has emerged as a major new province for diamond mineralisation in less than three years. This is primarily the product of a diligent search in the form of a scientifically based exploration effort. However other factors, including positive aspects of the business and the legal environment have also been identified as assisting the exploration process. In my view these have increased the likelihood of diamond mining becoming a major new industry for Canada. The supportive role of various government agencies has been important. In addition, the character of many of the joint venture deals that have been done has provided an attractive setting for the capital intensive evaluation and development work that is now required to bring the diamond discoveries into production. Perhaps of equal importance is that with the recognition that is being given to the success of the NWT diamond ventures, Canadian explorers are continuing to attract new risk capital for further exploration. This paper attempts to model and quantify the probability of exploration success translating into successful mine development.

The metals titanium and zirconium and their alloys occupy individually unique positions in the catalogue of metallic materials available for engineering applications. Because of the uniqueness of their usage in the aerospace industry, in the case of titanium, and in the nuclear industry, in the case of zirconium, the except- ional resistance of both the metals to the majority of corrosive media is often overlooked. The cost factor in the application of these more exotic metals has, in the past, been a major considerat- ion in the rejection of titanium and zirconium as constructional materials in areas of usage where their superior corrosion resistance strongly favoured them over more conventional metals and alloys. The cost differential, vis-a-vis austenitic stainless steels, for example, is not a trifling matter, being of the order of 6 : 1, when compared on a weight basis. However, if one considers the cost, for, say, sheet product on an area basis, the ratio is redgced to approximately 3.4:1. If one also takes into account the enhanced performance of the more expensive material and the sub- sequent increase in service life and decrease in plant down-time, the economics of the usage of materials such as titanium becomes much more attractive and, indeed, highly competitive,
