Long Shaft was initially developed using a rail haulage system on every working level comprising battery electric locomotives and granby trucks loaded by rail mounted rocker shovels. Production was commenced using conventional hand held cut and fill mining methods. In an effort to improve productivity and reduce operating costs a mechanised cut and fill stoping method evolved to suit the wider sections of the orebody. To further improve productivity and reduce costs the mechanised levels of the mine are progressively being redeveloped to enable the use of trackless diesel haulage equipment. An added benefit of trackless haulage equipment will be the ability to place development mullock into stopes as Fill.

Red mud (RM) is a solid waste product generated during alumina refinery process, and is usually stored in SFs (SFs) because it canÆt be disposed of easily. In this paper, environment degradation caused by RM-SFs was systematically assessed by the method of single factor pollution index based on the analysis data of water, soil and atmosphere sampled around one newly-built and one decommissioned RM-SFs, which are managed by an alumina production company in China. The results revealed that the ambient environment around RM-SFs is seriously polluted by alkali and mercury (Hg). The pH value of RM leachate, surrounding surface water and groundwater are all higher than the limit of water quality standards in China. And as a possible result of overflowing of high alkaline leachate, soil pH value for the decommissioned SF decreases with increasing distance between the sample collection points and the closest side of RM storage facility (RM-SF). Total Hg concentrations in RM leachate, surrounding surface water and groundwater all exceed Grade III limits of ChinaÆs Environment Quality Standards for Surface Water and Groundwater. The Morning Star Gold Mine has operated over a 101-year period, producing gold from narrow quartz veins and sulfide stockworks hosted mainly within a dioritic-gabbroic dyke. The deposit has been developed over a vertical depth of 980 m with drilling extending the vertical depth to greater than 1200 m. Currently there is a total Inferred Resource of 4.6 million tonnes at a grade of 6 g/t for 910 000 ounces of contained gold resources, which comprises an underground project and a surface project. Significant variation exists between the grade of drill core intersections and that observed in face sampling and subsequent production reconciliation (250 - 650 per cent). Studies were carried out on ten major production reefs, where the grades of drill intercepts were compared with face samples collected during development and mining. The implications of this study have been used as justification to assign production or stope/development grades where applicable to resources that are direct extensions of the historical development headings. Grade assignment and its impact on sensitivity for gold resources are detailed and show a 40 per cent variation in the gold resource, depending upon whether a production or calculated stope grade is used in grade assignment for the major reef deposits. Recent diamond drilling has intersected approximately 40 new gold bearing quartz reefs and sulfide zones that contain all the key mineralogical and structural indicators, and traditional large variations in gold grades similar to the historical major production zones. The implications of grade factoring and grade assignment are the greatest challenges confronting the resource estimation team in defining grade for these new zones. Grade assignment is seen as a method of balancing known historical production observations with the irregular grade distribution inferred from drill core assay results. Ongoing mine development and bulk sampling works are planned to validate the grade assignment process. The first stage of this process is the trial mining of the newly discovered Maxwell Reef (MR). The stope drawpoints were completed in August 2008 and the MRS1 stope is scheduled for completion in September. The stope reconciliation results will be presented at the October 2008 conference.

The heart of mine ventilation science and technology is the protection of the life and health of the miner. Lung diseases that result from overexposure to various mine aerosols can largely be prevented by maintaining concentrations below prescribed limits. Maintaining safe aerosol concentrations depends, in part, on our ability to know what mine aerosol concentrations are in a timely and accurate way. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been developing several new tools to help miners monitor respirable coal dust, silica and diesel particulate matter. This paper will discuss three main topics. First, the latest results of the person wearable dust monitor (PDM), developed by Rupprecht and Patashnick under CDC contract. The PDM was tested side-by-side with conventional samplers at a number of US coal mines and results indicated that the PDM was comparable to conventional samplers. Second, improvements to the dust dosimeter monitoring technique that includes a new pump with built-in pressure transducer and algorithm to convert differential pressure to dust concentration have shown good precision. Third, advances in the use of the detector tube technique to monitor tailpipe diesel emissions and ambient diesel particulate matter show that strong correlations exist between differential pressure measurement and elemental carbon in the samples.

The Odysseus Project is part of the high-grade Cosmos Nickel Complex that lies 30 km north of Leinster. The Odysseus definitive feasibility study (DFS) was approved by the Western Areas’ board in October 2018. Early works commenced in January 2019 with rehabilitation of the existing underground infrastructure. In June 2022 Western Areas was acquired by IGO Ltd. The project is now well advanced to meet its target of first concentrate. The project included the construction of a haulage shaft. The design of the hoisting equipment and the shaft barrel evolved from the initial DFS design stage to the final execution, as the data were made available from the initial investigation to the data gathered during execution (although this did not change from its initial concept). The design philosophy for the haulage shaft incorporated, from the beginning a multidisciplinary approach with inputs from three main areas involved in such projects, namely excavation techniques, geotechnical assessments, and infrastructure construction. This interaction is a fundamental component for the success of such a critical project. In fact, each of these three areas influences each other in a cyclical manner, triggering a continuous review of the project inputs and outputs, while maintaining the original project goals: the design of an infrastructure able to deliver the desired throughput. The throughput dictates the infrastructure that needs to be built, which in turn controls the size of the shaft. The key assumption applied to this is that the rock mass can accommodate the excavation void, and the excavation technique with its tolerances and limits that ultimately need to be verified back with the initial assumptions used for the infrastructure design. The aim of the paper is to present a case study of the experience gained with the Odysseus hoisting shaft and to propose a possible logic path for similar projects elsewhere.

Stratabound/stratiform and remobilised mineralisation have been recognised as the two dominant styles of mineralisation which constitute the Broken Hill ore deposit. Recognition of prospective sites for accumulation of ore depends on understanding the heterogeneity of the ore environment and the distribution of the two styles of mineralisation. The internal stratigraphy of the Broken Hill ore deposit and its enveloping rocks, is described, and a generalised stratigraphic setting of the stratiform mineralisation is outlined. Fhiphasis is placed on the existence of closely-spaced sub-basins as potential sites for ore accumulation close to the Broken Hill ore deposit. The concept of using specially designed slot blasts to mine through stress abutments that intersect faults, while controlling fault-slip seismicity, has come of age at Mt Charlotte Mine. Due to the high and adverse stress field and the presence of major faults, the mine is vulnerable to significant fault-slip seismicity. As mining proceeded, advancing stress abutments around various mined areas encroached on several major subvertical faults. If the sequence formed a diminishing pillar between stope and fault, the removal or failure of that pillar daylighted the fault, and often resulted in significant fault-slip seismicity. A new strategy called ‘Tight Slot Blasting’ (TSB) was developed to restrain or dampen this style of fault-slip movement. The TSB has geometric similarities to a conventional cut-off slot used to create stress shadows, but its function is different. Its objective is to trigger and control a sudden shift of the stress state on a fault from an initial stable state, through an unstable transition, to a second stable state. A TSB firing advances a long tall narrow slot through a stressed abutment between a stope void and a nearby fault, using a rapid blast with a low swell ratio, so that the slot substantially and rapidly fills with blasted rock fragments. During the blast process, the stressed rock is rapidly removed and transformed into the fragmented rock fill in the slot. The strategy deliberately allows a fault-slip episode to manifest at a chosen time and place. The tight-packed broken rock in the slot performs an essential shock-absorbing function by controlling the slip amount and rate on the fault, while at the same time the fill becomes compacted by the movement. This controls the dissipation of fault-slip energy, and greatly reduces the seismic response in time and space. A small closure across the slot occurs, with consequent relaxation and destressing of the adjacent rock mass. Stress monitoring data shows that slot creation lowers the abutment stress in the nearby rock mass, while the newly placed fragmented rock fill acts as a shock absorber, providing considerable resistance to substantial fault-slip movement that otherwise could deliver a significant seismic event. First used in 2007, the strategy has been refined to become a routine specialised practice for management of seismically hazardous situations at Mt Charlotte, with 12 successful TSBs conducted to date. Despite mining through multiple high stress abutments, seismic reactions have not exceeded ML 2.1 with any TSB firing, all remaining below the site tolerable maximum of ML 2.3. This paper presents an overview of the strategy, and five case examples of the strategy in critical stressed areas in July 2016, Sept 2017, Dec 2017 and two in Oct 2020. The strategy has successfully managed the seismicity and is expected to remain an essential part of the seismic management plan at Mt Charlotte Mine.

Mining companies are increasingly faced with the challenge of reducing operating costs while maximising throughput and profitability. At the same time, the grade and quality of treated ores are becoming poorer and more variable, resulting in suboptimal process performance.It is now widely accepted that strategies to drive operational goals must revolve around improving plant availability, reliability and process efficiency. In particular, progress in plant automation and control systems has seen a trend towards unified frameworks for control and optimisation of mineral processing plants. These frameworks seek to seamlessly integrate different roles and tasks involved in process operations - IT, automation, plant maintenance and operations. An integrated solution framework for reducing process variability, increasing process efficiencies and maximising plant availability and reliability is discussed within the context of a typical milling circuit. The framework exploits a real-time analysis ægapÆ evident in production operations that prevents timeous identification of equipment and process failures. This is achieved by leveraging predictive analytics for equipment health monitoring, control loop monitoring and advanced regulatory control solutions towards enhanced process performance, improved asset management and regulatory compliance. The framework provides for early and actionable warnings on equipment and process degradation using real-time operational data.Resolving these problems can potentially avoid unplanned downtimes, process instabilities and other operational surprises, thus ensuring optimal plant throughput and optimal process behaviour for improved recoveries. Integrating control systems and plant automation with advanced analytics to analyse and optimise processes enables operations to achieve reductions in the variability of key process parameters. In addition, early detection of equipment malfunction or suboptimal process conditions leads to improved equipment availability and reliability. Ultimately, these operational gains reflect in profitability because of plant throughput and recovery gains. The equity market is now very much within a global village environ- ment, with various exchanges acting as agencies for the big casino. In this predicament, mining companies, who provide the most extensive, but relevant risk assessment information, will be best placed for favoured treatment by potential international investors: But what risk assessment information in summary form can be provided to support a resource/reserve statement? Even more importantly, does "objective" data exist, whose trends will support a resource/reserve state- ment? A prime need of the informed mining investor is to determine whether or not the resource/reserve statement is believable? But more importantly will it be realised? While the implications within the text of the majority of reports on resource/reserves suggests that the estimates are conservative, the record indicates that very few estimates are. In fact, to date, reports claiming to be conservative in respect of the overall grade estimate at a specfic cutoff have not reflected the realised grade at the stated cutoff; it has been more common for the realised grade to be lower than implied by the resource/reserve statement. Further, it is not uncommon for penalty elements to be understated and these components are rarely incorporated within resource/reserve statements.

Pebble recycle crushing circuit performance at Telfer has historically fallen significantly short of the design product P80 of 12 mm. An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the current pebble crusher circuit performance, quantify the optimum performance achievable with the existing circuit and examine the impact of pebble crusher performance on the overall grinding circuit throughput. The primary objective of this investigation was to develop an operating strategy that could consistently deliver the finest possible pebble crusher product to maximise the overall plant throughput.The pebble crusher specific energy (Wc) was proposed as a key control variable for pebble crusher operation based on the results of plant survey work. Over the range of pebble crusher specific energies encountered at Telfer, a strong linear relationship was found to exist between Wc and the crusher product size. This direct linear relationship between specific energy and crusher product size remained constant regardless of how the change in specific energy was generated, ie through changes to the crusher closed side setting (CSS), feed rate, liner profile or moisture content. Key findings for the Telfer pebble crushing circuit were: each 0.1 kWh/t change in Wc resulted in a 4.9 per cent to 6.0 per cent change in plant throughput, each 1 mm change in pebble crusher CSS resulted in a 2.2 per cent to 2.6 per cent change in plant throughput, and 0.57 tonne of new feed was displaced for each tonne of crushed pebbles recycled to the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill. The presence of an existing 3000 tonne pebble stockpile between the SAG mill and pebble crushers provides an opportunity to manipulate the feed rate to the pebble crushers independently of the SAG mill pebble production rate. This flexibility, along with excess pebble crushing capacity, enables the pebble crusher specific energy to be maximised the majority of the time. Pebble crusher specific energy has subsequently been incorporated as an online crusher control measure to assist in maximising plant throughput.

The treatment of preg-robbing gold ores has always been a technical challenge in the gold industry. Early solutions included removal of preg-robbing carbonaceous material by flotation, the addition of kerosene to æblindÆ/passivate the surface of the preg-robbing component, and the most effective of all options, roasting the ore. Unfortunately gold ores have become more complex and roasting has environmental challenges, so other methods of treatment have had to be found. Trench cutter systems have been used in civil engineering for the least 30 years for the installation of deep cut-off walls, retaining walls and foundation systems. The systems are constantly advanced to achieve greater depth, penetrate through harder rocks a provide a bigger footprint of the cutter. The state-of-the-art equipment can reach down to 250 m vertical depth and penetrate all different types of soils and rocks up to 150 MPa unconfined compressive strength.In mining, especially in commodities with a high value and where the ore deposit has a small footprint, cutter mining with vertical attack from the existing ground level will be a new, cost-efficient approach where conventional open pit mining is not economically feasible due to a high stripping ratio. The same applies for open pit mines that have reached the end of their conventional mine life and where going underground is also uneconomical. The BAUER Cutter Mining System, which has been adapted to the special needs of mining, is a new technology that will allow mining at depths of up to 250 m.The same system can be also applied to ore dykes, be it vertical or slightly inclined, concentrating the excavation on the actual orebody and minimising the strip ratio and the contamination of ore. The system can be adapted to the dimension of the dykes or veins and to the rock conditions.BAUER’s latest approach is to use the vertical cutter mining technology for the extraction of sea floor massive sulfides from the seabed in deep ocean waters. Due to the compact footprint of the system and the vertical attack for mining, extraction of the ore can be concentrated on the hot spots, minimising the environmental impact on the sea floor both for mining and manoeuvring the remote-controlled mining tool.CITATION:Schwank, S K, 2015. Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

The Cadia Hill concentrator at Newcrest’s Cadia Operations has undergone several modifications and upgrades to treat an increased throughput rate of harder ore from the Cadia East block cave mine.Subsequent to the commissioning of the expanded circuit, the flotation cleaner block has undergone a systematic optimisation programme tackling all facets of circuit operation. The Eyre Peninsula (EP) has been known for its iron ore for more than a century. Edward John Eyre noted the ironstone outcrop at what is now Iron Knob in the 19th century. Sir Douglas Mawson visited and reported on the geology of the lower EP in 1906, noting the widespread presence of iron stone and the likelihood of copper being associated with the iron stone. Despite this knowledge there has been only one successful iron ore mining region developed on the EP and that is Iron Knob and the Middleback Ranges which have been mined continuously since 1899. The Middleback Ranges can justly lay claim to be birth place of the Australian iron ore and steel industries.The discovery of large scale haematite resources in Western Australia meant that there was no need to seek out iron ore that needed benefi ciation. The low price of iron ore precluded further development of the EP and many other areas in Australia and overseas. This situation changed rapidly in the mid-2000s with the emergence of China as the world’s industrial power house and the soaring demand and price for many resources including iron ore. This triggered a flurry of activity across Australia and led to the rapid exploration and drives to develop the EP iron ore. A brief examination of the magnetic maps of the EP shows the wide spread presence of magnetite and associated smaller haematite deposits. A closer look reveals the magnetite deposits to vary in formation style and host rock lithology as well as being significantly altered by regional metamorphism. *This is an abstract only. In recent years, due to advances in designing of various magnet assemblies, a wide range of magnetic materials with different properties can be concentrated. Jalal Abad iron ore beneficiation plant, which is located in Iran, Kerman province, is currently producing iron ore concentrate with the capacity of 0.8 Mt/a by having medium intensity magnetic separators (MIMS) with rougher and cleaner stages that finally leads to the production of an iron concentrate with the Fe grade of about 65 per cent. In this plant, the rougher tailings directly goes to the thickener as the final tailings and cleaner tailings feeds to the ball mill for regrinding. Since some hematite particles with weak magnetic properties cannot be recovered from only these two stages of magnetic separation, the obtained tailings from this concentration plant has approximately an iron grade of 25 per cent to 27 per cent. Accordingly, laboratory processing tests were conducted on the obtained representative sample of the final tailings. Based on the experimental results performed on final tailings, a new magnetic drum separator with a specific magnetic assembly was designed that could finally lead to product with iron grade range of 58 per cent to 60 per cent with relative and total weight per cent of 8.6 per cent and 3.86 per cent. Finally, it could be concluded that feeding of magnetite particles to the existing drum separators, due to their high magnetic field intensity, cannot efficiently lead to improvement of the grade of concentrate. Therefore, pilot magnetic separation tests were done on the final concentrate for evaluation of product upgrading probability. Consequently, by increasing another stage of cleaning and by decreasing the magnetic field intensity, the final product grade could be enhanced from 65 per cent to 67 per cent.

The problem of instantaneous outbursts remains unsolved after over a century of events and the investigation of the mechanism of the phenomenon and means of treating it. Outbursts have occurred of up to 5,000 tonnes with perhaps up to 500,000 m3 of accompanying gas, either methane (CH4) or carbon dioxide (C02) or mixtures. The low density of CH4 and the high density of CO2 give particular problems. Australia with both gases has experienced outbursts for 85 years with fatalities as recent as 1978. The Bulli Seam of the Illawarra area of the Sydney Basin is affected and outbursts with both CH4 and CO2 occur. The Northern and Central Bowen Basin also experiences outbursts with both gases. Proneness of affected mines is related to the high rank of the'coal and the proneness of the seams-is localised according to depth, gassiness, structure and development geometry. Proneness may be reduced by appropriate choice of mining methods. In addition to outbursting mines other mines have symptomatic phenomena. Traditional preventive methods have been used and control by induce- ment has been practised.
