IN 1871, two furnaces at the Glendon Iron Works, which had been blown out on account of the "coal strike," were altered from the open-top plan with side flues for collecting the gas, to closed tops with cup and cone. In one furnace the suppression of the side flues permitted a considerable alteration in the profile, but in the other (No. 5) no change in this respect was made; the side flues were simply bricked up and new ones cut through the sides close to the top. This furnace was in blast over four years, and we can, therefore, form a pretty good idea of the effect of the alterations on the furnace process. The principal dimensions are; Height 72'; greatest diameter, 18'; diameter at tuyeres, 8'; diameter of top, 10'; diameter at stock line (point at which the top of the materials is kept), 11'; cubic contents, 11,900 cubic feet. The table below shows the average results for periods of twenty-six weeks each. 1st, of the open-topped furnace; 2d, of the furnace with the first charger used, which was an ordinary cup and cone (diameter of cone 5' 2") 3d, with the charger used ever since, a "double" cone 7' 5" diameter outside, having a central opening 3' in diameter. The diagram (Plate II) shows the daily variations, in the grade of the irons for the same periods.* * In calculating the average grade of each day's iron, each twelve hours was taken by itself whenever more than two kinds of iron were made in the 24 hours, and the diagram drawn accordingly. By counting, it will be found that there were more such days with the single cone than with the "double" cone, and more with this than with the open top. † Anthracite.

THE September issue of MINING AND METALLURGY might almost have served as a review of the advances in the metallurgy of gold during the current year. In addition to a scholarly article by F. W. Bradley, there were able descriptions by W. W. Bradley and W. F. Boericke of the methods followed in California and in Ontario. Considered together, the two last-named articles indicate the many possible combinations of flotation with one or more of the older processes. This, the prominence of flotation as an aid in the beneficiation of gold ores, is probably the most striking of the year's developments. It would perhaps be nearer the fact to say that the year has not been marked by the gold metallurgists' discovery of the flotation process, but rather by the flotation merchandizers' discovery of gold metallurgy. I say this because native gold was floated successfully more than fifteen years ago, and a reference to these results was published six years ago.

A number of measurements have been made on the vapor pressure of pure iron at 1600°C. Experiments were carried out by the transportation method in which a sample of iron is exposed in a furnace to a stream of pure argon, metered at a predetermined flow rate for a specified period of time. The vapor pressure was obtained from the weight loss of the sample. A detailed diagram of the apparatus used for the experiments is given in Fig. 1. It consisted of a horizontal molybdenum-wire-wound furnace fitted with a recrystallized alumina tube 1 1/8 in. internal diam. The boats, 1 by 3/16 by 1/8 in., were fired in argon at 1600°C to constant weight before use. After this treatment, subsequent heating of the boats to 1600°C gave little or no further change in weight, e.g. ±0.05 mg in 24 hr. The furnace and reaction tube were separately fed with argon from two independent flowmeters. These were connected to a common supply source via an argon purification furnace containing metallic titanium sponge at 700°C, and an anhydrone drying-tower. A rotary displacement-type meter was included in the gas train to provide a direct means of measuring the total volume of gas passed through the reaction tube. The material used was vacuum melted high-purity iron in the form of wire 2mm in diam. The following impurities were present in the iron: 0.008 pct C, 0.002 pct Si, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.008 pct S, 0.001 pct P, 0.01 pct Ni, 0.001 pct Cr, 0.006 pct Cu, and 0.001 pct Al. Samples consisting of three small pieces of this wire were laid end to end in a recrystallized alumina-combustion boat, and were separated by small fragments of alumina. The wire samples were then melted in argon to form spherical beads 2 to 3 mm in diam. After weighing, the boat with its contents was placed on the boat carrier and introduced into the cool end of the reaction tube. The entire furnace system was then flushed with argon for 30 min. At the end of this period, the flow of argon to both furnace and reaction tubes was adjusted to the desired level; then the boat was slid rapidly into the hot-zone of the reaction tube. After a known volume of gas had passed through the reaction tube, the boat was withdrawn quickly to the cool end of the furnace. When quite cool, the boat was removed from the fur-mace and placed in a desiccator for subsequent re-weighing. The semi-micro balance used in these experiments had a sensitivity of 0.005 mg. The above procedure was repeated at several flow rates within the range of 25 to 300 ml per min. The flow of argon in the annular space between the two tubes was at a rate of 300 ml per min in all experiments. During all the experiments the furnace temperature was maintained at 1600° ± 5°C by means of a temperature controller. The temperature of the reaction zone was measured with a Tinsley high precision disappearing filament pyrometer which was initially calibrated against a Pt-13 pct Rh/Pt thermocouple; the errors due to temperature measurements were within * 5°C. RESULTS Assuming that the iron vapor is in the monatomic state, the vapor pressure can be calculated from the weight loss of the sample and the volume of the carrier gas. The results obtained are plotted in Fig. 2 against the rate of flow of argon through the chamber containing liquid iron beads. At low flow rates, the thermal diffusion of iron gives an apparent high vapor pressure, but at high gas flow rates, the carrier gas is not saturated with the vapor, and therefore, low vapor-pressure values are obtained. Programs of the principal coal laboratories were more adequately financed than in previous years, but all reported shortages of technical personnel. Expansion in coal research in the year to come will depend primarily on the availability of qualified research talent.

(communication to the Secretary*): The recent papers in the Transactions by Vogt,' Lindgren2 and Weed: on ore-deposits that have formed as a direct result of igneous intrusions, show that deposits of this class are widely distributed over the world, and are occasionally of commercial value. This is especially true if we consider under this head all deposits in the zone of contactrnletamorphism, the origin of which may be ascribed to the gases and vapors generated by the heat of the intrusive rock. Mr. Smith's description of the Chillagoe garnet-formations containing copper, leads one to regard these depoaits as of contactrmetamorphic origin, although he gives certain reaeons for supposing them to be of igneous origin.

AN often repeated criticism of the profession of engineering is that it is as a whole it lacks solidarity. organization, co-ordination, and leadership. Significantly, the critic, are all engineers. Other members of the body politic either do not know about the absence of organization or they do not care. If engineers have no organization they have a plethora of organizations. There exist in the United State, today some 350 societies. institutes. clubs, associations, and councils of engineers and engineering technologists and this number excludes several hundred local chapters of national societies. trade associations, and local engineers' clubs of purely social character- Successful engineers must be proficient in analyzing, planning, and co-ordinating. but it is generally admitted that for their profession as a whole their success in this respect has been indifferent.

Consolidation of hydride process, electrolytic, calcium reduced, and comminuted thorium powder, as well as saw chips and lathe turnings, by vacuum hot pressing and by cold pressing-vacuum sintering was studied. The mechanical properties of the consolidated material in the extruded form are compared with those of wrought castings. AT present there little little industrial use for thorium metal, although it has some important though small scale applications in electronic equipment. Despite its high inelting point—about 1750°C —a low modulus of elasticity, 11.4xl0 si at 20°C;' relatively low mechanical properties coupled with a high density, 11.7 g per cu cm; and an unusually high chemical activity with normal atmospheres limit any structural applications. The metal is utilized as an alloying element principally in magnesium. Pure thorium finds utility as electrodes in gaseous discharge lamps such as the high intensity mercury lamp' because its low work function and high electron emissivity provide lower starting potentials and more uniform operating characteristics than other available materials. The metal is also found in photoelectric tubes used for the measurement of the ultraviolet spectrum." Thorium metal has been used in germicidal lamps of the cold cathode type as sputtered coatings on nickel in order to provide a low work function surface and a low starting voltage. Other applications have involved the radioactive properties of thorium for the production of ionized particles." The potential value of thorium is much greater than its present use pattern because of possible utility in the field of nuclear power. Th may be converted through nuclear reaction to a fissionable element U which should be capable of acting similarly to U in the g'eneration of atomic power. Thorium has been reported to be about three times as plentiful as uranium in the earth's crust, placing it in the order of abundance of lead and molybdenum." Thus, it is of interest in augmenting the potential supply of fissionable material for nuclear power. Because of its high melting point, thorium is usually produced as a powder through the calcium reduction of its oxide or thermal reduction of halides by sodium, magnesium, and calcium. It may also be produced in flake form by electrolysis of fused alkali or alkaline earth chloricles and fluorides. Therefore, powder metallurgy assumes importance in the fab- rication of thorium metal shapes. Furthermore, it is rather difficult to obtain pure thorium by melting, as the molten metal reacts readily with graphite as well as oxide, carbide, and nitride refractories. These contaminate the melt with oxides, carbides, and metallic impurities." The current investigation was undertaken to examine the fabrication of thorium by powder metallurgy methods which have been used for the commercial production of beryllium and other metals.' A sparcity of data concerning the comparative cold and hot compaction of thorium powders of different derivation existed. Therefore, all commercially available types were examined along with other experimentally produced thorium powders in order to round out the comparison of consolidated thorium powders with melted reguline metal. Review of the Literature By heating a mixture of ThC1, with potassium, Berzelius made the first thorium metal as an impure powder in 1828. Improvements in the basic process, increasing thorium assay to 99 pct, were made by several investigators including Arsem," Lely and Hamberger10 and Von Bolton." Calcium reduction of Tho, to make powders was investigated by Berger," Huppertz,'" Kroll," and Kuzel and Wedekind.'" A thorium powder produced by this method using a CaC1, fluxing agent assayed 99.7 pct, as reported by Marden and Rentschler.'" Compacted and sintered, this product was found to be ductile, and could be fabricated into wire and sheet. Improvements of the calcium reduction process were made later" wherein CaCl, was eliminated from the reaction, producing metal assaying 99.8 pct Th. Further work by Lilliendah118 howed that a coarser metal could be obtained by the substitution of ThC1, or ThOC1, for oxide with consequent advantage of stability to atmospheric reaction. Reports on the technology of thorium developed in Germany during World War II have been made by Espe."' Thorium powder of 99.5 pct Th was obtained by reduction of the oxide by calcium. Screening to —200 mesh, compacting with about 20 tsi, and sintering in vacuo at 1320" to 1360°C for 3 hr resulted in a porous sinter cake. The sinter cake was sufficiently ductile to be worked into bar, wire, and sheet which could be employed as electrode materials.

THE "slot" system of mining in use at the Golden Queen mine, Mojave, Calif., does not involve any new mining methods. It is, however, a new combination and adaptation of several stoping systems in common practice. The first plans for stoping operations at the Golden Queen mine called for ordinary shrinkage stopes. The hanging wall of the vein, where exposed, is a very hard felsite with a dip varying from 50º to 70º. The vein itself is quartz, shattered and fractured enough to make it easy to drill and blast to a clean hanging wall. There is no well defined footwall. The footwall limits had to be determined by assays as the metal content faded out into the felsite. Two shrinkage stopes, each approximately 200 ft. long, were laid out and started on the 200-ft. level. One of these stopes, varying in width from 8 to 18 ft., was carried on up to the top limits of the ore, approximately 120 ft., without a break in the operation. The shrinkage system proved entirely satisfactory and low costs resulted from this operation. In the final drawing of this stope, two timbermen followed down on the ore, scaling the hanging wall clean of small fragments and placing an occasional long stull from foot to hanging wall where it was deemed necessary. Few such stulls, however, were required. The hanging wall stood up very well until the stope was entirely emptied of ore. Waste fill was then put into the stope by the glory-hole method, through a waste raise that had previously been run to surface from the middle of the stope. The second shrinkage stope ran into difficulties about 35 ft. above the sill floor. Up to this point the maximum width of the ore had been about 15 ft. The ore suddenly widened into the footwall to a distance of 40 ft. in the north end of the stope. In extending the stoping operations over this width, it was soon found that the vein material would not arch and support itself. Drilling in this end of the stope was then entirely too hazardous, and all operations were stopped. The ore was drawn through the chutes below as rapidly as possible and as soon as the stope was entirely

Barium can be purified by equilibration with titanium. The melting point of barium was found to be 726.2° i 0.5 °C. The room-temperature lattice parameters of BaTe and Bask are 7.004 * 0.002A and 6.600 * 0.002A. Melting points for BaTe and Base were found to be 1510° * 30°C and 1830° ± 50°C, respectively. HIGH-purity barium and its compounds are difficult to prepare because of the reactivity of barium with the atmosphere and the large heats of formation of the compounds. Purification of barium by vacuum distillation,' and the preparation and properties of barium oxide2 and barium sulfide3 have been reported. However, little has been done on the homologous compounds barium selenide and telluride. PURIFICATION OF BARIUM Distilled barium obtained from King Laboratories was used as the starting material. The analysis supplied with the metal showed the presence of: 0.4 wt pct Sr, 0.001 pct Mg, 0.02 pct F, 0.003 pct Cu, 0.005 pct Na and less than 5 x 10-3 wt pct of any other metallic impurity. Analyses for oxygen and nitrogen were not available. Since there is evidence4 that any barium nitride present in the starting material may decompose on distillation producing nitrogen which can contaminate the distillate, further purification was performed. At elevated temperatures, any nitrogen and oxygen present in barium should be removed by reaction with titanium. Assuming that the solubility of oxygen in liquid barium is negligible near the melting point of barium, any oxygen present will be in the form of BaO. Removal of oxygen from molten barium is expressed by the equation: BaO(S)+ TixOy(S) = Ba(l)+ TixO(y+1)(s) where Ti,Oy and TixO(y+1) are solid solutions of oxygen in titanium. At 1000°C, the change in free energy for this reaction is negative for (y+1)/x +y+1) x (100) 17.5 at. pct O.5 Since reaction with commercially pure titanium (containing 0.07 wt pct oxygen) results in a free energy change for the reaction of -19 kcal per g-atom, slight solubility of oxygen in barium would not hinder the oxygen removal. Since comparable thermodynamic data are not available to permit calculation of the partition of nitrogen between liquid barium and titanium, a similar quantitative relationship cannot be obtained. However, on the basis of work by Kubaschewski and Dench,5 complete removal of nitrogen from liquid barium can be expected. Since the melting point of barium is depressed markedly by small additions of nitrogen,' the change in melting point during reaction of barium with titanium was used to follow the purification reaction. MELTING POINT OF BARIUM A 50-g sample of barium was sealed by arc welding under argon into an all titanium crucible provided with a thermocouple well. The melting point of the sample was determined by thermal analysis, using a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple which was calibrated according to National Bureau of Standards specification6. The crucible was then heated for 48 hr at 950°C in vacuum and the melting point redetermined. This procedure was repeated until three successive thermal analyses agreed within ±0.5oC, the limits of error of the analysis. The melting point increased from an initial value of 720.0°C to a final value of 726.2°C. Analysis on samples quenched from 950°C gave a solubility value of 0.004 wt. pct Ti. Assuming that the titanium-barium phase diagram is similar to those of titanium-magnesium7 and titanium-calcium,8 the solubility of titanium in liquid barium decreases with decreasing temperature. Therefore, the solubility of titanium in liquid barium should be less than 0.004 wt. pctat the melting point (726oC), and the effect of dissolved titanium on the melting point would be negligible. Addition of up to 3 wt pct Sr does not significantly change the melting point of barium,7 so that the effect of the 0.4 wt pct Sr in the starting material will also be negligible. The value of 726.2" ± 0.5C obtained for the melting point of barium can be compared .with a determination carried out by Keller and coworkers in low-carbon steel crucibles,' who obtained a value of 725± 1C, using barium purified by fractional distillation. The higher value obtained in the present investigation is indicative of the effectiveness of titanium in removing traces of nitrogen. (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Meissner announces early in his paper that one of its purposes is the discussion of my paper entitled, Notes on the Physical Action of the Blast-Furnace,' with which he disagrees in part; and as the second stage of the discussion of this important subject has centered around his paper, some reply by me may not be amiss. Unfortunately, Mr. Meissner has not indicated a single statement or conclusion in my paper that he wishes to controvert; but as there is evidently a difference of opinion between us I will disregard this fact, and will discuss those conclusions of his that seem to me not to be justified by the facts of general practice, or even by the data which he produces to support them. The radial shrinkage during sintering of cylindrical compacts and loose aggregates of copper powder was measured. It was found to be nonuni-form from top to bottom of the samples and to depend upon the method of supporting them. The non-uniformity is due to the effect of gravity forces during sintering. Since gravity has an effect in sintering without externally applied stresses, no sharp dividing line can be drawn between conventional sintering and hot pressing. RECENT investigations of the sintering behavior of compacts1 and of loose powder aggregates2 have indicated that forces, other than those arising from surface tension effects, may play a role in shrinkage. In compacts it was shown that residual stresses from the pressing operation influence shrinkage behavior. In loose powder aggregates gravity forces due to the weight of the powder affect the ratio of shrinkage in the vertical and the horizontal direction. The main effort in the work reported here was to show that gravity plays a role also in the sintering of compacts. A few additional experiments were made confirming the effect of gravity in the sintering of loose powder aggregates. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Compacts and loose powder aggregates were prepared from irregularly shaped, electrolytic copper powder. Prior to use the powders were reduced 30 min at 400°C in dry hydrogen to remove surface oxides. Then the -325 mesh size fraction was separated from the -100 + 325 mesh fraction. The compacts were pressed at a pressure of 10,000 psi from 50 g of powder in a hardened steel die, 1 in. in diam. The height of the compacts was 0.725 i 0.005 in. An effort was made to get as uniform a green density distribution in the compacts as possible. The walls of the die were lubricated with a suspension of 3 pct of zinc stearate in acetone and the compacts were pressed using double action by first pressing the powder at 1200 psi with the die barrel supported, then removing the sup- ports and pressing to final pressure of 10,000 psi with the die barrel floating. The pressure was maintained for 10 sec. The compacts were sintered at a temperature of 925°C, generally for 1 hr. In order to maintain uniform temperature they were sintered in boats made from cylindrical copper blocks. The blocks were 2 in. in diam, either 2 or 2 1/2 in. long and, split to form the body of the boat and a lid. The body of the boat contained a cavity 1 3/8 in. wide, 1 in. deep and either 2 1/8 or 1 3/8 in. long. The longer cavity accomodated two samples, the shorter one only one sample. The uniformity of temperature distribution within the boats was checked with thermocouples welded to the top and bottom of the samples. The maximum variation between top and bottom temperatures was i 1/2°C. The actual sintering temperature was held constant within ±2°C. In order to determine the effect of gravity forces, i.e., the weight of the compacts, upon shrinkage, they were supported in the following ways during sintering: a) Full Bottom Support. The compacts rested either on a flat alundum disk or on alundum powders. b) Partial Bottom Support. The compacts rested on a graphite cylinder, 0.3 in. in diam which formed a projection on a larger graphite disk. It is difficult to balance the compact on the small projection. To avoid having the compact tip, a small hole was drilled through the compact and through the graphite disk and its projection. The graphite disk was then suspended from the lid of the boat by a thin iron wire which passed through the holes in the disk and the compact. c) Top Support, first type. A hole 3/32 in. in diam was drilled diametrically through the green compact 3/16 in. from the top of the compact. The compact was sintered suspended from an alundum rod (thermocouple protection sleeve) inserted into the hole. d) Top Support, second type. A hole was drilled axially through the center of the compact. The upper part of the hole from the top surface of the compact one fourth of the way down was 1/16 in. in diam; the lower part of the hole from the bottom surface three fourth of the way up was 3/32 in. in diam. The compact was suspended from the lid of the boat by an iron wire passing through the upper part of the hole and then tied into a knot. The loose powder aggregates were made by filling l in. deep, l in. diam cylindrical graphite molds with -325 mesh powder. THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Coal treatment by oil spraying receives special attention at the Georgetown plant for the dividends it pays in satisfying present customers and attracting new markets. Customer satisfaction requires care, quality control, and use of suitable oils. REPRESENTED here are the ideas and varied experiences of many people in the Hanna Coal CO. who have helped develop, over a number of years, an efficient and flexible method for spraying controlled amounts of oil on coal. Since the Georgetown preparation plant began operations early in 1951, oil treatment of coal has received special attention. It is believed that oil treating will satisfy present customers and also attract new markets. The first step in developing the new method of oil spraying was the construction of a dust cabinet for testing 50-lb samples of treated coal with the available oil sprays on the market. Tests results were tabulated for both indoor and outdoor storage. The graph, Fig. 1, shows results of the original tests made with a 700-sec residual blend and a 500-sec lubricating oil on Georgetown stoker coal of 1¼x3/8-in. size.* The advantages of better price, improperly blended can raise havoc. Some.,pale oils also, although odorless when delivered, give off a sweet sickening odor when atomized under pressure. It is recommended that all products be tested before they are used. There is a specific place for all spraying oils. For example, at a power plant a severe dust condition exists around the stockpile area and in parts of the plant. The cheapest spraying oil made, regardless of odor, will do an excellent job in this case and will save the company 3 to 5c per gal or more. Domestic trade, on the other hand, must be carefully handled to prevent complaints about odor, and the only way to do this is to stay with the proved products after the odor tests have been made. The preparation plant at Georgetown has facilities to handle either tank car or tank truck deliveries. Steam is available at the unloading point if the weather is severe, and there is an indicator at the unloading point to prevent overflowing the 20,000-gal underground storage tank. Systematic test samples are removed from each delivery and sent to the lubrication engineer to insure quality control. Fig. 3 illustrates the chutes in which smaller sizes of coal are treated. Fig. 4 shows the entire spraying system. Buried in the ground is a 20,000-gal tank with immersion heaters grouped around the feeder line to insure adequate gravity flow to the pump under all conditions of weather. Oil flows to a 500-gal preheating tank where the temperature is kept about 150°F by six 1½-kw immersion heaters thermostatically controlled. Hot oil is fed through a self-cleaning disc-type filter to the hydraulic pump. Valves and piping make it possible to transfer oil from one tank to another or to drain the lines for maintenance purposes. All this equipment is below ground level in a covered pump room,

THE writer has reread Mr. Ingalls' interesting article in the July, 1923, issue of MINING AND METAL- LURGY on "The Use of Spelter in Galvanizing." It seems that most writers, in commenting upon coatings of spelter on sheets and wire, dwell upon the thin coatings which these materials carry, and rightly so. However, they seem to forget that until very recently, in the case of wire, the manufacturer did not know how to apply a heavy coating of spelter to the wire, especially if the wire was to be woven into fence or fabricated in some other manner, because heavy coatings of spelter are exceedingly brittle. This is even true in the case of high-grade spelter, but to a lesser degree than with Prime Western. Because of this brittleness, it has been necessary for wire manufacturers to smooth the coating by passing the wire through tightly compressed wiping means of some kind, usually asbestos. This removes all of the excess spelter and allows only a thin coating to remain. The latter, as a rule, is malleable and the wire can be fabricated without material injury to the coating.

THE real and permanent advances which take place in any industry are for the most part slow evolutions which frequently develop and grow almost imperceptibly from clay to clay. A meritorious idea may and generally does require long and patient development and commercial application under a variety of conditions and in a number of localities before it emerges as standard and generally accepted practice. There must be not only technical perfection but also economic advantage. Thus a cross-section taken at any particular time of an industry may reveal little that is distinctly new and yet there may have been considerable progress. During the past year there has been little that is new in milling and yet there has been real progress; some problems have been solved and some of what we may term the newer developments have become more firmly, established.

DURING the early development of blasting with liquid oxygen explosives the trend of experimentation was towards increasing the effectiveness of the explosive. Its characteristic of becoming inert after evaporation of the oxygen content made a strong appeal from the standpoint of safety, especially with missed holes. It later became apparent, however, with practical use of this explosive, that LOX lacked certain other safety characteristics. As its effectiveness was increased, it became more subject to detonation by impact. The object of this paper is to show the steps taken by one operating company to achieve greater safety in the large-scale handling of liquid oxygen explosives.
