Much of the ground to be covered by this paper was ably covered by a paper presented by Messrs. Morrow and Jordan1 before a joint meeting of the Iron and Steel Section of the Engineers Society of West-ern Pennsylvania and the A.I.M.E. Pitts-burgh Section at Pittsburgh in the spring of 1940. As that paper was not published, the present authors have availed them-selves of Mr. Morrow's kind permission to use information given therein. Similar figures for the latest years available have been added to many statistics originally presented. It is unfortunate that Mr. Jordan's death removes his stimulating guidance and help, which the authors would have welcomed and have found invaluable in the past. One interested in the Pittsburgh seam should not fail to read the exhaustive and authoritative paper by Eavenson2 presented in 1938. As Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties contain practically all the reserves and furnish nearly all of the production from the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania at the present time, this area only is intended when reference is made to the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania. On much of the seam in Greene and Washington Counties, which contain a large proportion of the total reserves, insufficient data are available to determine the detailed characteristics of the seam with any degree of finality. It is hoped that the data presented here will fairly well indicate the probable characteristics. Economic Importance of the Pittsburgh Seam The Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania is of primary importance as a coal resource, not only because of its substantial reserves but because it contributes such a large proportion of the coal used in the country and an even larger proportion of that used in the manufacture of coke. Mr. Ashley3 placed the estimated recoverable reserves (1935) of the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania at 7,500,000,000 tons.* Although a considerable portion of this tonnage is not now suitable for coking coal, because of its high sulphur content, undoubtedly the supply of coking coal will last for many years and that not suitable for coking will furnish industry with an ample supply of energy. In attempting to assess the contribution of the Pittsburgh seam to total coal production and to that of coal used in making coke, one finds that the statistics published annually by the U. S. Historical-From the beginning of time, all ingenuity of mankind has been concentrated upon the methods of finding gold and unusual deposits in the earth. An illustration (Fig. 1) from the old treatise by Agricola, "De Re Metallica," published in 1580, will serve to show the im-plicit faith of that generation in divining methods. However, it was not until 1920 that real progress was made in prospecting by using the latest advances of the physical sciences. The public interest was stimulated by the successes of these methods on the part of commercial oper-ators, and governmental agencies received many requests for information concerning their relia-bility. There were also, in the late 1920's.high- pressure mine-promotion schemes which used geophysical methods in a very questionable manner, symbolized in Figure 2 as of 1928 by an elec-trified forked stick. Authoritative information concerning such practices for public protection was needed to curb such notorious undertakings. Dr. Scott Turner, then Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, thoroughly understood the situation and was first in the governmental de-partments to recognize the possible value of a study of modern prospecting methods. The Bureau of Mines began this investigation by employing Drs. A. S. Eve and D. A. Keys of McGill University for short periods in the summer in 1927. Their first publication [see 1 of "References" at end of paper] served to illustrate the fundamental scientific principles which underlie geophysical prospecting. This was followed by a second publication [21 giving the results of field-tests. In the light of the rapid improvements during the intervening ten years, these two papers take a historical position. Later a full-time position under Civil Service was planned by the Bureau of Mines for con-tinuous investigations and research concerning geophysics and its applications to prospecting. It was Turner's idea that. since the oil-industry had been making very rapid progress with good results, if mineral mining could also benefit to the same degree, it would be of great help to that industry.

APPROXIMATELY 3500 people thronged the Hotel Statler from February 18 to 24 for the 173rd general meeting of AIME. It was a technical extravaganza in that 82 technical sessions were held, at which 500 authors presented some 350 papers. Fortunately, Jerry Peirce, outgoing President, didn't have, to preside at all the events although after his year's stint as President, he has more than a nodding acquaintance with some of the latest problems in the mining, metals, and petroleum industries. Although the Welcoming Luncheon on Monday noon was the official opening of the meeting, Local Section Delegates and the Board of Directors convened on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The large attendance and business like demeanor of these two groups was in accord with the energetic and competent service they have rendered the Institute through the year. To the applause of engineers and their wives who thronged the grand ballroom of the Statler for the Welcoming Luncheon, President Peirce introduced Oliver B. Hopkins, president of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and C. Gerow, secretary of CIM. Dr. Hopkins brought greetings from the CIM and expressed his satisfaction in the splendid spirit of cooperation that exists between the two Institutes. Dr. Hopkins is president, Interprovincial Pipe Line Co., Toronto, and counts as a close personal friend M. L. Haider, who is the 1952 President of AIME and lately of Toronto where he was a director and general manager of Imperial Oil Ltd. Mr. Haider will be known shortly as Mike to thousands of AIME members as he makes his Local Sections presidential tour. There was a pause in luncheon proceedings when Judge Harold R. Medina arrived amid the applause of the audience and somewhat breathless from his trip via motorcade from an antitrust trial against investment bankers at the courthouse downtown. With the Judge at his elbow, President Peirce took the opportunity in his introduction to good humoredly chide the Judge for the vixenish habits of public servants in their treatment of astute businessmen. The successful inventor who patents his inventions is a monopoly; the copper manufacturer who buys his competitors a drink is in collusion; but the business failure need only look to the government for a subsidy, Mr. Peirce pointed out. Judge Medina, quickly captured the admiration of his listeners. He spoke about justice, deploring partisan deals on nominations for judge-

EBBLE grinding at Lake Shore is not a temporary BlE wartime substitute. The tube milling plant, with a 1000 ton per day capacity, grinds a hard siliceous ore to 90 pct — 325 mesh. The plant, prior to using pebbles, was consuming 4.3 lb of 11/4-in. grinding balls per ton of ore, which amounted to 785 tons of balls per year. At September 1951 prices, $132.60 per ton, this steel cost amounted to $104,400 per year, or $0.285 per ton milled. By the Lake Shore method of substituting screened rock for this steel, all of this cost is saved. This is one of the major economies in Lake Shore mill practice. Regardless of the ultimate price of grinding balls, a change back to steel balls is not considered. The present pebble plant is more flexible than a steel ball plant and equally efficient. For example, if it is desired to change the size of grinding media, the pebble charge in any mill can be changed completely in 4 to 5 days, as against 76 days to change completely a 1-in. steel ball charge. To change pebble size it is necessary only to change two sets of screens and clean out the rock feed storage bin. This will take 8 to 10 days as against 3 to 4 months to clean out the customary supply of grinding balls kept on hand. Also it has not always been possible to purchase all desired sizes of balls at any price. In an analysis of savings effected by the use of the pebble mills, the flexibility of the Lake Shore grinding plant should be discussed, as it has a direct bearing on these savings. The plant has always used several units to handle tonnage rather than sending all the tonnage through a single unit. This principle may result in using small diameter mills, but no objection to that is seen. At no time has any advantage been found in cost per ton ground in large diameter mills. Both the capacity and the power of any mill varies as the diameter raised to the 2.6th power. Consequently large or small mills are equally efficient, and a plant, should be designed to use as many units or combination of units as is consistent with reasonable operating practice. Mills under 5 ft diam are harder to reline, etc. To define the case at Lake Shore, 2600 tons per day formerly were milled in seven 7x6-ft ball mills and twelve 5x16-ft (and two 6x16-ft) tube mills.* This gave an excellent test plant and an extremely efficient one. In this plant the ratio of ball mills to tube mills was 1:2. When the much cheaper pebble mills were substituted for the tube mills, this ratio was changed to one ball mill to four pebble mills to take the greatest possible advantage of the cheaper operating mill, i.e., the pebble mill. This flexibility without loss in efficiency has been an important item in the cost savings. It is interesting to note that the use of pebbles for fine grinding was proved first in the laboratory in a 12-in. ball mill. In fact, since 1934 all testing on — 8 mesh material has been done in this 12-in. mill. Scope of the Tests A paper on fine grinding at Lake Shore Mines was published in July 1940.' This paper covered 7 years of intensive research on fine grinding as well as sizing methods and equipment, plant scale grinding tests on 5x16-ft tube mills with and without grate discharges both with 1-in. and -in. balls, the use of laboratory mills to evaluate plant changes, and several reports on classifiers and classification. In the following July the addendum report2 was added in which the idea of series-circuit grinding was introduced, and the results of running five stages of tube mills and bowl classifiers were shown. Since 1940, the ball milling end of the plant has been altered extensively as a result of tests on the use of 3-in. rods in 7x6-ft mills and the use of the Tyler repulping screen with from 7 to 14 mesh screens. These tests are lengthy and may be covered in a separate report later. The scope of this report is confined to ore ground by rod milling and ball milling until it passed through an 8 mesh Tyler Ty-rod screen. The —8 mesh screen undersize then was pumped to a primary bowl classifier in open circuit and the sands from the bowl sent to the primary pebble mills, see Fig. 1. In the pebble mill circuit the ore is ground to 90 pct —325 mesh (24 pct + 28 microns). In studying the flowsheet, attention should be paid to the efficiency of the classification equipment used. The Tyler repulping screen is an efficient machine on the 8 to 10 mesh separation, and the bowl classifier is equally efficient at the 325 mesh separation. Efficient classification is a necessity for series-circuit stage grinding. The ore is hard siliceous porphyry, 60 pct SiO,, 80 pct insoluble. Its grindability at different meshes has been shown near the top of the list in F. C. Bond's grindability tests.' Lake Shore is not shown, but an adjacent mine with identical ore, Wright-Hargreaves, is. Reasons for the Changeover Since 1936 grinding balls have been rising steadily in price with no sign of stopping. For a mill that used 4.5 to 5.2 lb of grinding balls for every ton of ore ground this rise represented an alarming increase in grinding costs. In many cases the quality of the grinding balls fell off as the scrap steel became more difficult to obtain. The ratio of tube mills to ball mills increased with the use of the Tyler repulping screen in the ball mill circuit. Originally only 3.0 lb of balls per ton were used in the tube mills, and this

RECORDING that the latest annual meeting was the largest and most successful ever held has be-come almost a habit, but when, as this year, the registration on the first day exceeded any other first day by two hundred, the annual dinner attracted nearly 1200, as compared with 750 at the previous largest one, and the number of technical sessions was larger than ever before, there seems no escape from so regarding it. In spite of the third day being a legal holiday (Washington's Birthday) no slackening, in attendance and interest was noted, and throughout the four days the greatest problem was to find enough meeting rooms and chairs to provide for the sessions, of which as many as twelve were in progress at one time. Solution of the problem would not have been possible (since the Engi-neering Societies building, was designed to provide only three general meeting rooms) except that a part of the eighth floor happened to be temporarily vacant. As these extra rooms will not be available next year, it may become necessary to adopt measures to keep the annual meeting down to the limit of facilities for handling it. The meeting opened on Monday with simultaneous sessions on iron and steel, geophysical prospecting, mine ventilation, non-metallic minerals, and milling, methods. The first four, which were continued after the usual recess for lunch, are reported in more detail elsewhere.

F. C. Bond (Consulting Engineer, Processing Machin-Dept., AllisChalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee) This is a very comprehensive paper. It deals with 1) size distribution functions, 2) energy-particle size relationships, and 3) criteria for grinding efficiency. The method of analysis used consists of tracing the increase and decrease of successive Tyler scale screen fractions as grinding progresses. The treatment is based upon the assumption that the work done in grinding is concentrated entirely upon the coarse size fractions in the mill. It is postulated that when a feed consisting entirely of particles of one size fraction is batch ground that finer fractions increase at a constant rate as grinding progresses, until finally each in turn begins to be ground and to decrease in amount. It is shown that under these conditions the empirical Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann log-log size distribution plot can be logically explained. It is difficult to imagine any condition of ball mill operation, or any probability analysis, which would result in no grinding contacts on the finer particles present. However, the authors' postulate must be accepted if their conclusions are to be sustained. They conclude that the equation expressing the for mation rate of each size fraction can be resolved into the G.-G.-S. size distribution equation, and that the curvilinear portion of the log-logsize distribution line represents the only particle sizes which are being ground as well as produced. The author's statement that the G.-G.-S. Eq. 4 applies only to the finer portion of the size distribution while the Rosin-Rammler Eq. 6 applies over the whole size distribution range certainly supports the view that an exponential equation of the Rosin-Rammler type corresponds more closely to actual size distribution than does the power law G.-G.-S. equation. However, the G.-G.-S. equation is used to derive Eq. 8 and Eq. 9, which state that the energy required to grind a ton through a particular mesh varies inversely as the particle size to the exponent -a , whic h is the slope of the extended G.-G.-S straight line. This is stated to apply to both batch and continuous grinding. The G.-G.-S. slope exponent thus becomes very important in all crushing and grinding analyses by this method. The authors include some data which can be used to test their conclusions, as described below: We will consider grinding a feed composed of 14 mesh (1190u) to -200 mesh (74u). The average of 17 Allis-Chalmers grindability tests on quartz gives a work index (Wi) of 12.77. The -200 mesh product should have 80 pct passing 41.6u or P = 41.6. The equivalent 80 pct passing size of the 14 mesh feed particles is considered to be the particle diameter, as is true for spherical particles. Thus F is 1190u. In the work index equation 10 wi 10 wi 127.7 127.7 P f 41.6 1190 = 16.1 kw-hrperton. In Table I the ball mill exponent for quartz is 1.0 and from Eqs. 9 and 10: w=kw-hr/ton =Constan/(do/di) = 16.1 ton so that (1190) Constant/ Constant and the Constant equals 259. The tons per horsepower-hour value is 0.0464, in agreement with Table IV. The exponents for other minerals are listed in Tabl e 11. In Table IIA, the kilowatt hours per ton required to grind these minerals between the same sizes as the quartz, both by the authors' method and the work index equation, are listed. According to the authors kw-hrperton = 259/(16.1)".

Pilot plant test work in 1942 and 1943 showed that by a combination of desliming, fine-size classification, and Sullivan deck concentration it is possible to recover heavy minerals such as cassiterite at least as fine as 10 microns in size. This appreciable improvement in gravity concentration practice has been substantiated by several full-sized plants.

The death of Louis Janin, which took place Mar. 6, 1914, at Santa Barbara, terminated the earthly career of almost the last survivor, and one of the most illustrious members, of that group of American mining engineers and metallurgists who, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, directed the development of the mineral resources of the Pacific slope. Louis Janin was born in 1836 at New Orleans. His grandfather, an officer in the French army, had emigrated to this country, with his family, at or before the outbreak of the French revolution. The effect of rain size on the creep behavior of an austenitic iron-base alloy has been studied at 1300° F under conditions of constant stress. The average grain diameter varied between 9 and 190 p (ASTM 10.7-2). The subgrain size and apparent activation energy for creep were not found to depend in any systematic manner on gain size. The variation of c, with grain size is believed to he associated particularly with grain boundary generation of dislocations which becomes more important with increasing temperatures. SEEMINGLY inconsistent experimental findings have led to a certain amount of confusion concerning the effect of grain size on creep behavior. The confusion is attributed to a lack of test results obtained over sufficiently wide ranges in grain size, stress, and temperature. Experimental results presented in this paper and results available in the literature1-5 show a consistent behavior and lead to a unified concept for the dependence of secondary-or steady-state creep rate on grain size. In accordance with this concept, which is substantiated experimentally, secondary-creep rate should increase with increasing grain diameter at low creep temperatures, leading to greater creep strengths for fine-grained materials. At intermediate temperatures the secondary-creep rate should decrease to a minimum and then increase as the grain size is increased. At high creep temperatures the secondary-creep rate should decrease with increasing grain size, leading to greater creep strengths for coarse-grained materials. Whether a temperature is high or low for creep in a metal or alloy depends primarily on its melting temperature. MATERIAL AND TEST PROCEDURES The material tested was an austenitic iron-base alloy of the following composition (wt pct): C, 0.005; N, 0.017; Mn, 1.26; Ni, 14.21; and Cr, 17.18. Two 15 -lb ingots were forged and hot-rolled to 5/8-in.-diam bars which were then cold-rolled and cold-swaged to a diameter of 0.49 in. These were sectioned into 3-in.-long blanks and heat-treated at various temperatures to obtain different grain sizes. The procedures employed and the results obtained are summarized in Table I. The secondary treatment at 1400° F followed the primary treatment without intermediate cooling to room temperature. This final treatment was employed to minimize various effects arising from heating to different temperatures during the primary treatment, particularly differences in intragranular dislocation structure, segregation of interstitial atoms at grain boundaries, and density of grain boundary ledges. The intragranular dislocation structure was examined by electron transmission metallography after each of the treatments described in Table I. Isolated dislocations and a few tangles were observed but no evidence of subgrains was found after any of the treatments. No grain-size effect was evident on the density and distribution of dislocations. Much information regarding the transfornlatio~lal characteristics of a steel as it cools in a known manner from the austenitic state can be obtained from dilatometric studies. This method has received more arid more attention because of its great flexibility, accuracy, and ease of interpretation. &apos;The method is entirely applicable to any rate of heating and cooling although the experumental procrdures for high rates of cooling have offered some difficulties. This paper presents a description of equipment employing cooling rates up to 500 °C. per secorld and the results of dilatometric observations on six commercial steels are included. French and Klopsch1 studied the cooling transformations of a serirs OF carbon steel, using the thermal arrest method. This was followed by the systematic investigatiol1 of Esser and co-workers on the effect of carhon2 and other alloying additions. in which the transforlnation temperature\ were determined by magnetic induction measurements indicated by a string galranoineter. Emphasis was placed on determining Ar&apos; trailsformations and the critical cooling rates for these steels. The maglietic measurements wrere used in an effort to obtain more accurate data at higher cooling rates. Measurements of thermal arrest were made also to check the validity of the magnetic indications, and good correlation was found between the two, although Esser&apos;s,Ar&apos; temperature measurements on iron-carbon alloys were about 200°F. lower than the measurements made by Fresnch and Klopsch. A notable contril~ution by Esser was the introduction gas quenching. wever and Rose4 used a moving-coil galranometcr in the study of the .Ar and Ar" of iron-carbon alloys by the thermal arrest method and obtained somewhat lover Ar" temperatures than those observed by Esser below I per cent carbon and considerably higher ahove. They concluded that the cooling rate had little influcncc on the Ar" temperatures above 0.4 per cent carbon, although Esser had observed a decrease in the -4r" temperature with increasing cooling rate with similar steels. Digges determined the .Ar" temperature4 for a scries of high-purity iron-carbon alloys, and close agreement with his results was obtained by Greninger. The thermal arrest method. together with metallographic observation used in both these studies, represents the latest investigations of this type. DURING the past several years of diamond drilling in Washington County, Mo., the St. Joseph Lead Co. has discovered a concentration of commercial lead-zinc ore at four different points within an area of 36 square miles. The largest and to date the most promising group of these orebodies is located in the Indian Creek area. It was considered to be of sufficient value to warrant development. The Indian Creek area is in the center of the northern half of Washington County, 11 miles northwest of Potosi, Mo., the county seat. The location is readily accessible from Potosi by car or truck over the all-weather Missouri State Highway No. 114. The topography is one of rolling relief, varying from an elevation of 700 ft above sea level on Mineral Fork and Indian Creek to a maximum of 1176 ft at High Point Tower. It is divided in equal halves between the drainage to Mineral Fork and to Indian Creek. The shaft site at 1060 elevation is on the divide between the two drainage areas. The Indian Creek side is rough and heavily wooded, with only a few cultivated clearings. The slopes to Mineral Fork are more gentle and rounded, with much of the area cleared for farm land. Most of the surface is covered with Potosi and Eminence formations, which show little evidence of any structure. Ore structure was worked out by extensive diamond core drilling, with holes varying in depth from about 700 to 1300 ft. As of Oct. 1, 1950, 218 prospect holes had been drilled within the 36-square mile area. The ore is disseminated galena with considerable accompanying sphalerite in the Bonne Terre forma-tion in the shape of irregular blanket-type deposits. The main controlling structural feature of the outlined mineral zone is a buried pre-Cambrian rhy-olite-porphyry ridge extending partly through the Bonne Terre formation, which laps against the por phyry and also covers it. The mineralized zone parallels and forms an irregular halo around the porphyry ridge and is concentrated in the Bonne Terre formation where the La Motte sandstone is cut out by the porphyry ridge. This is a very common mineral occurrence in the southeastern Missouri lead belt district. The La Motte sandstone, which normally underlies the Bonne Terre formation, is thus cut out entirely. In this area the Bonne Terre is usually about 275 to 320 ft thick, the La Motte varying in thickness from zero up to 400 ft. Commercial concentrations of ore are indicated at several places, the most notable being at the shaft site where an orebody at least 4000 ft long with widths of 500 to 600 ft has been outlined. The total thickness of mineralized rock reaches 150 ft in some holes, although total ore thickness runs from 8 ft to about 60 ft, often in more than one layer. Preliminary Planning Ore reserves as outlined lend themselves to open-stope mining with trackless haulage and mobile loading machines and drilling equipment. This type of equipment has proved to be very efficient during recent years in the company&apos;s lead belt operations. After a study of bids for shaft sinking and an estimation of comparative costs, it was decided that the shaft would be sunk by St. Joseph Lead Co. personnel using company equipment. Since the plant site is about 26 miles from the company&apos;s nearest lead belt operations, it was necessary to plan a complete surface plant, including mill, shops, office, change room, and warehousing facilities. Immediately following the filing of an application for a certificate of necessity, a headframe was selected for which detailed drawings were already available. The order was placed for fabrication so that it could be delivered and erected in time to serve for sinking the shaft. This eliminated the expense of a temporary headframe. A BLAST can be "full of sound and fury," signifying nothing but a poorly confined charge, or it can be a muffled, well controlled explosion which moves the rock efficiently and places it in the desired location with the least amount of fuss and bother. Why one method will do the job and another proves to be almost useless is shown by the machine-gun camera studies of quarry blasting made by the Atlas Powder Co. staff. The sequence, or machine-gun, camera is the latest scientific device for the study of cause and effect factors in blasting. Movie cameras, previously used, although of some use, were limited because slow shutter speeds and small negatives failed to give clear, sharp prints. During World War II, the AAF developed the sequence camera, which figuratively stops the blast at regular intervals, making study and evaluation feasible. The camera is simple and inexpensive and offers material for accurate examination of blasting techniques. The machine-gun camera takes three 5x5 in. exposures per sec at a 1/450 sec shutter speed, four times faster than a movie camera. Negatives are 30 times larger than those of movie cameras, giving large, sharp prints. The rock movement is frozen on the picture as the sequence of the blast takes place. Pictures on this page show the advantage of individual machine gun photographs. But the sequences made possible by this camera give graphic, dramatic and conclusive support to recently developed detonation theories.

Much has been written and said concerning the alleged wasteful and uneconomic use of natural gas and petroleum. Espccially condemned has been the use of natural gas for the production of carbon black and the use of heavy fuel oil under steam boilers.&apos; The critics of these usages of gas and oil have sought to make effective their verbal attacks on the industry by the repetitive expression of the words "inferior" and "superior" uses2 of petroleum. Thus, to employ natural gas for residential heating was to use it in a superior way; to use it for the production of carbon black was to use it in a wasteful and uneconomic way. To use petroleum for the production of automotive fuel was to use it in a superior way; to employ it as a residential fuel and as the prime source of power in an industrial plant was to use it in an inferior and uneconomic way. No doubt the objections to such employment of gaseous and liquid natural hydrocarbons originated in the belief that natural gas and petroleum are limited, nonregenerative mineral resources, and that the functions they perform can be just as well performed by other natural resources like coal13 of which practically unlimited reserves are known. The generations that have dominated each of the last four decades have counted reserves4 of petroleum in terms of a few years supply. Meanwhile, domestic demand for motor fuel rose spectacularly from a few million barrels in 1900 to more than 500,000,000 bbl. last year.5 The more imaginative and vocal critics drew startling word pictures of the catastrophe of 25,000,000 motor vehicles made useless and of the great automotive manufacturing and allied industries brought to an untimely end, and millions of workers left hopelessly unemployed by what they called the deplorably rapid depletion of the petroleum reserve. Many of the critics have been sincere advocates of the conservation of natural resources; many others, and in recent years probably the majority, have espoused the doctrine of conservation to promote their own self-interest rather than that of the public. The latest advocate of severe restriction in the use of petroleum for the alleged purpose of conserving the petroleum resource proposes to achieve that end by a bill,6 now before

Annealed and electrolytically polished pure iron was oxidized between 650° and 850°C at oxygen pressures of 0.1 to 2 microns Hg. Electron optical studies showed that oxidation occurs discontinuously over the surface and orients crystallographically with the substructure of the metal grains. IN previous papers&apos;, " the authors described the formation of oxide films on high purity iron at norrnal pressures and at temperatures below 300°C. Electron optical studies showed that the oxide film consisted of many individual oxide crystallites having nearly random orientation on each metal grain. The size of the oxide crystallites depended upon the temperature and upon the extent of oxidation. In these studies the crystallite size varied from 250 to 1800Å. Recently, Bardolle and Benard3 studied the crystal habit of the oxide crystallites formed on Armco iron between 650" and 850°C in what might be defined as a "poor vacuum" atmosphere in which the pressure could be varied between 10-1 to 10-3 mm of Hg. Their results showed that, at 850°C and a vacuum of l0-2 to 10-3 mm of Hg, a few well oriented nuclei of oxide were formed on the metal grains. At pressures between l0-1 to 10-2 mm of Hg, many oriented nuclei of oxide were formed. At 750°C the metal surface was bright although an oxide was present. Unfortunately, the extent of oxidation, the oxygen pressure, and the influence of carbon in the metal were not determined, and it was, therefore, impossible to give a theoretical interpretation to the very beautiful light micrographs. Bardolle and Benard used the light microscope to determine the crystal habit of the oxide and X-ray diffraction to determine the orientation relationships. It was believed that the use of controlled amounts of oxidation at high temperature is an important method for the study of the initial stages of oxidation of metals at high temperatures. This paper presents the first results of an electron optical study of this problem for iron. Since the electron microscope and electron-diffraction methods using stripped oxide films and surface replicas yielded finer details of the crystal habit and structure of oxide film, these methods were used in this study. Two types of iron having different carbon contents were used: Puron and Armco* iron. A com- parison of the results for these materials made possible a study of the influence of the surface oxide-carbon reaction on the initial stages of oxidation. Before discussing the experimental results, the thermodynamic equilibria of 1—the oxidation reaction, 2—the surface oxide-carbon reaction, and 3—the solubility of oxygen in iron, will be considered. In addition, it is important to consider the kinetic-theory predictions on the rate of collision of oxygen with the iron surface. Thermodynamic and Kinetic-Theory Calculations Only one type of reaction is usually considered in the oxidation of iron at normal pressures at high temperatures: Fe(a) + 1/2O2(g) = FeO(s) 3Fe(a) + 2O2(g) = Fe3O4(s) 2Fe(a) +3/2O2(g) = a-Fe2O3(s). [11 However, two other reactions may occur: FeO(s) + C (solid solution in Fe) + Fe(a) + CO(g) [2] and Fe(a) + O2(g) e Fe(a) (solid solution of 0,). S. F. Emmons, Washington, D. C.: Mr. Malcolmson&apos;s paper on the intensely interesting deposits of the Sierra Mojada creates a strong desire to visit the region so well described. Although it is difficult to intelligently discuss a locality that one has never seen, I cannot refrain from offering some remarks in the nature of a tentative suggestion: 1. Age of Beds.—Mr. Malcolmson speaks of the enormous thickness of limestone forming the Sierra Mojada as belonging to the Carboniferous series. If this is not a typographical error, it seems that he should present some evidence for such age, for Chism,* in his previous article on the district, says the only fossils found there were said to be Cretaceous; and it is well known by the investigations of R. T. Hill and others that the great thickness of limestone in this part of Mexico is of Cretaceous age. 2. Structure of Mountains.—Mr. Malcolmson presents good reasons for thinking that the structure of the two related mountain masses (Sierra Mojada and Sierra Planchada) is not the simple anticlinal fold given by Mr. Chism&apos;s section, it being evident that there has been faulting as well as flexure. I venture to add that the facts presented by Mr. Malcolmson seem to suggest the possibility that, instead of being simply an eroded anticline, the valley between the two ranges may have been formed, in part at least, by the irregular faulting down of the intermediate block, on the surface of which the volcanic breccia had originally accumulated at a higher level. The sections of the Exploradora and the San Josh mines, in the smooth surface of the contact, with clay selvages and the occasional slickensides, certainly suggest a structural fault between the limestone and breccia. Separating oil from water may seem simple enough, but in fact, tremendous efforts have gone into this common process problem. The petroleum industry is constantly looking for better ways to separate the emulsion of oil and connate water that is pumped from the ground and its latest development, the electrostatic emulsion separator, may find an important offshoot application in hydrometallurgy. The patent-pending OSX coalescer, developed by C-E Natco, recovers entrained solvent from both raffinate and the pregnant strip liquor. It has already undergone successful testing at the Bluebird copper circuit in Arizona and is currently being prepared for testing at a uranium SX plant.

There will be a special train from New York City to Arizona and return, to take members and guests of the Institute to the meeting., The Committee in charge consists of Walter Douglas, Chairman, Cleveland E. Dodge, John C. Greenway, Arthur S. Dwight and Julius Kruttschnitt, Jr., and while the plans of this Committee are not complete, it may he announced that &apos;the train will be run with the requisite number of Pullman, dining and baggage cars to accommodate those who desire to go, which will accompany the party during the entire week of the Arizona Meeting as per the following program, including, of course, the visit to the Grand Canyon. It is especially desirable that the Committee should know, at as early a date as possible, the number of those who desire to make the trip; and those who desire special accommodations such as drawing rooms, state rooms, etc., are especially requested to communicate as soon as possible with the Secretary of the Institute, stating the number in their party.

A recent survey of existing analytical results, and an attempt to correlate them with each other and with the known history and behavior of the samples, indicated that none of the commonly applied methods could be considered established as intrinsically reliable. It was. therefore, desired to attempt to establish the reliahility of some one method by external evidence. If this were to be accomplished, other methods could then be evaluated in terms of the method establibhed. The correct method was accordingly to be chosen without regard for cost, speed, or convenience; with the requirements for routine application to be reserved for 1ater consideration. The method of total combustion was chosen and submitted to a limited number of tests against primary standard samples. Considerable experimental difficulty was encountered, indicating that additional work on the experimental arrangements is desirable. While the work to (late by no means represents a completed investigation, it is helieved that the combustion method is basically sound and that its development should be continued. Choice of Method Of the several available methods, mechanical disintegration. electrochemical methods&apos;2&apos;3 modifications of the Sieverts experiment,% and vacuum fusion, were all judged to contain one or more factors of un- certainty not at present completely cvaluated or suhject to complete control. These methods, therefore, were considered currently unsuitable for referee purposes. Solid evolution was considered to be of doubtful significance when conducted in the alpha range. A reasonable chance for a true analysis was found for evolution in the gamma range. Preliminary tests have indicated a very slow rate for evolutioll from gamma iron. indicating a running time of possibly 100 hr. for a one-centimeter sample. Difliculty in distinguishing such slow. evolution from blank gas was anticipated, hence the method was not consitlerctl the most suitable for the present purpose. The combustion method was evaluated as being most sound on fundamental principles. The only important unknown would be to determine that the iron oxide formed did not occlude water at the tcmperaturv of the combustion.with the odvious precautions of using a sound and clean specimen, providing a system sufficiently tight to give acceptable blanks in longtime runs, and providing a suficicntly sensitive measuring system, reasonable, precise, and truthful analytical results could be logically expected.
