Mine regulators are normally used for proper air distribution in underground mines. They are deliberately introduced resistance in the regulated airway, and by altering sizes, they can distribute specific air quantities to regulated splits and free splits (4, 5). The enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977, and the regulations adopted by the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (now called the Mining Safety and Health ministration) prompted greater discussions of optimal mine regulator locations because of the Act's stringent ventilation requirements (2, 3). For example, by requiring the separation of the air used in the belt haulage entries from the intake and return airways, the regulations required the creation of a third type of airway---the neutral airway, as opposed to the intake and return airways, adding to the complexity of a mine's ventilation network. It is the intent of this report to show that panel regulators should be located in intake airways at the neck of a panel for a blowing fan system and in return airways at the neck of a panel for an exhausting fan system in order to achieve optimal air control. A computer simulation model is used to determine optimal mine regulator location.

Palladium has a large capacity for the dissolution or occlusion of hydrogen; the gas also diffuses very rapidly through the metal. Palladium thimbles are widely used in the laboratory for purification of hydrogen by diffusion. The use of palladium filters could be extended to several large-scale applications if greater stability of the permeation process could be attained. In this paper a number of aspects contributing toward this goal are discussed, and new data on solubility and diffusivity are given. Palladium sheets of 0.005, 0.010, or 0.020 in. thickness were prepared by three procedures: casting and rolling, sintering palladium powder, and sintering palladium powder to which 0.1 pct thorium oxide had been added. Half-inch diam circular specimens were cut and clamped in a stainless steel holder provided with knife edges to seal the palladium sheet with soft copper gaskets. The seals were tested for leaks at l0-5 mm Hg. No difficulties from this source were encountered even after many temperature cycles in the system. The holder was silver-soldered to Kovar-glass seals and attached to the system through glass ball joints. Each joint was sealed with Apiezon wax and was adjacent to a cold trap. In several experiments the holders were fused directly into the system, eliminating the ball joints, to show that the wax did not affect the filter. Three filter holders were supported in holes in a stainless steel cylinder, which also acted as a temperature equalizing block inside the resistance wound furnace. The measuring thermocouple was inserted in one of the holders. A potentiometric controller with control thermocouple on the furnace heater winding maintained ± 0.2oC. Electrolytic hydrogen was purified and stored as shown in the flow diagram, Fig. 1. It could be admitted to either or both sides of the palladium specimens. Only a mechanical pump was used, for even high pumping speeds would not bring the pressure on the off-gas side of the filter below 10 to 50p Hg owing to the rapid hydrogen flow through the filters. A series of steady-state permeability studies allowed identification of several conditions of permeability loss. A constant fore pressure was maintained while the low-pressure face was pumped. After enough time had elapsed for a steady flow to be established the pump was cut off, and the rate of pressure increase in a thermostated bulb was measured to determine the flow rate. The time delay method of Daynes1,9 was adopted since it offered the possibility of determining solubilities and diffusivities. For each measurement both sides of the filter were evacuated for 15 min, which gave about 10-4mm Hg residual pressure. Hydrogen was admitted to one side or the other of the filter at a fixed pressure. The pressure on the off-gas side was observed as a function of time. A

The geological mapping of Lincoln and Flathead Counties was a five-year project undertaken by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. This paper, written by the Project Geologist of the survey, is primarily concerned with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks encountered in mapping. Lincoln and Flathead Counties of northwestern Montana are underlain by sedimentary rocks of the Belt Series of Precambrian age. In only a very small part of the area, near Libby and Troy, have economic mineral deposits been worked with any success. Most of the area has been inadequately mapped as to geology. The region is crossed by the Great Northern Railway and served by the Pacific Power and Light Co.; officials of these two companies believed that with better geologic maps, prospecting might be stimulated and lead to the discovery of mineral resources that would contribute to new economic development within the area. A cooperative mapping agreement was proposed jointly by the two companies to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in May 1958, and thus was born the Kootenai-Flathead five-year project. The dual objectives of this project are: 1) the possible location of mineral deposits of economic value, and 2) the ''stimulation of prospecting exploration" by others. This was to be achieved by geologic mapping of some 6800 sq miles and by establishing a field office in Kalispell where prospectors could come to have their rocks and minerals identified and receive geological advice on their problems. This writer has finished four field seasons as Project Geologist and thus became familiar with the Belt section in the Libby, Yaak River, Ural, Thompson Lakes, Pleasant Valley, and Stryker quadrangles (see Fig. 1). Progress on the project is given in annual reports issued by the Bureau.* This *Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Bulletins 12 (1959), 17 (1960), and 23 (1961). paper is concerned essentially with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks so far encountered in mapping. PREVIOUS WORK IN THE AREA Willis28 made the first study of the stratigraphy and structure in the Lewis and Livingston Ranges of Glacier Park just east of the project area. In 1904, Daly made a study of the Belt rocks of the 49th parallel, using the names from bottom up, Creston, Kitchener, Moyie, and Gateway, for rocks ranging in age from that of Prichard to that of basal Missoula group. Walcott26 studied the Belt rocks exposed in the Mission Range (see Fig. 1) and other areas to the south of the area under discussion. Calkins and McDonald made a reconnaissance of northern Idaho and northwestern Montana in 1905. Calkins was the first to use Walcott's term 'Ravalli' as a group name for the strata equivalent to the Burke, Revett, and St. Regis formations (see Table I). THE formation of intermediate phases in the solid state reaction of titanium with silicon, germanium. and tin (of subgroup 4B in the periodic table) was the subject of a recent paper.' Further investigation of the system Ti-Sn revealed the presence of a new compound on the titanium-rich side of this phase diagram. Metallographic evidence indicated that this new phase was situated very close to 75 atomic pct Ti. The present work is concerned with the crystal structure of the intermediate phase Ti3Sn. Iodide-process titanium metal, furnished by the New Jersey Zinc Co., was used in this investigation. The metallic tin was received in powder form from Charles Hardy Inc., New York; its purity was 99.80 pct. The titanium rod was machined into small cups 1 cm in diam and about 1.5 cm in height. The tin powder was compacted, melted, and then placed in the titanium cups and alloyed by electric arc melting in a helium atmosphere. The alloys, weighing approximately 8 g, were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and homogenized at 1030°C for 5 days. This isothermal heat treatment was terminated by a water quench from the soaking temperature. Filings of the alloyed pellets were sealed in evacuated quartz bulbs and quenched from 1030°C into liquid argon. A 14.32 cm Debye Scherrer X-ray camera was used for the powder diffraction study. The copper radiation was filtered. X-ray diffraction data for the compound Ti3Sn are given in Table I. The data were indexed on the basis of a hexagonal lattice. Good agreement between observed and calculated values of the square of the reciprocal interplanar spacings was obtained with the following expression: (1/d)2 = 0.03810 (h2 + hk + k2) + 0.04410 (l2) Unit cell parameters were calculated by the method of least squares from the reflections (20.3), (22.2), (40.1), and (42.1); ao = 5.916 & 0.004A, co = 4.764 ± 0.004A, and co/ao = 0.805. The relatively small size of the unit cell allowed the unambiguous indexing of most of the reflections from planes of large spacing. An inspection of the assigned indices (Table I) reveals the absence of (hk.l) reflections when 1 2n. A systematic absence of this type leads to the space group C 6/mmc or one of its subgroups. Assuming, for a first approximation, a linear increase in the density of titanium with the addition of tin, it follows that there are two stoichiometric molecules of Ti3Sn per unit cell. The density calculated from X-ray measurements is 5.194 g cm-'. At this point it became clear that Ti3Sn might be isomorphous with Mg3Cd. The 6 Ti and 2 Sn atoms were placed in the following positions of space group D4 6h, C 6/mmc: 6Tiin (h): X 2X 1/4; 22;; 1/4;Xx 1/4;x2x3/4; 2x x 3/4; x x 4; with x = 516 2 Sn in (c): 1/3 2/3 1/4; 2/3 1/3 3/4.

Edward S. Simpson, Perth, Western Australia (communication to the Secretary): In 1896 the East Coolgardie gold-field was divided into three fields, viz. : Area, square miles. Officia1 Centers. (1) East Coolgardie,. . 634 Kalgoorlie. (2) Broad Arrow,. , 588 Kurawa. (3) Northeast Coolgardie,. 22,960 Kanowna. The whole of the area embraced by the eastern gold-fields is covered with late Tertiary sands and gravel, with occasional beds of clay shales. These mostly overlay granite which occasionally shows through in small round hills. At Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and other mining centers, belts of diorite, serpentine and highly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks appear on the surface. The rainfall at Kalgoorlie in 1897 was 4.75 inches. That the climate has not always been so arid is evidenced by the recent discovery at Coolgardie (only twenty-five miles away) in the late Tertiary formations of a thick bed of brown coal, containing numerous fossil fern-leaves. As assayer and mineralogist to the Government of Western Australia I have had occasion to examine a large amount of the Kalgoorlie ores, both in Perth and at the mines at Boulder itself. The conductivity of copper wire is of prime importance to the electrical industry and consequently to the copper refiner and wire manufacturer. Annealed copper wire has a higher conductivity than hard-drawn wire, but, on the other hand, its tensile strength is lower. In an attempt to explain the reasons for these changes in properry. or at least to study the conditions existing in these two types of copper wire, the experiments described here were carried on in the Department of Metallurgy of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology This is only a partial and preliminary report on some of the work done to date on a research program of which the object is an intensive study of copper. It is offered with the hope that, though it is not an exposition of the most rigorous of conclusions, the general trend of inferences which may be drawn will be of value and interest. Effect of Direction of Drawing In 1928 some work was done on hard-drawn copper wires to determine whether wire drawn in a continuous machine (that is, all in one direction) would have a different structure from wire that had a reversal in direction at some stage of the drawing process. The diffraction spectra obtained indicated that as the position of the wire rayed approached the core, a preferential crystal orientation existed, and that the closer to the core the more preferred was the orientation. The data obtained partly corroborated the work done by Schmidt and Wassermanl and by Clark.2 Samples Used in Following Investigation The samples selected for use in both the diffraction work and the resistivity measurements were taken from Nos. 6, 8, 10 and 12 gage

THe elements silver, cadmium, tin, antimony and tellurium either are found as impurities in commercial coppers or are intentionally added to produce coppers for special uses. When present in small quantities, each of these metals exerts a significant effect on the properties of copper, but despite considerable experience and investigation much remains to be learned about their specific behavior. The presence of extraneous elements, particularly oxygen, complicates the study of individual additions of impurities in the range o to 0.05 per cent, and the use of high-purity copper has been found extremely helpful in circumventing these difficulties. It has also been found that individual behavior can be satisfactorilv determined from measurements of two commercially important properties, conductivity and softening temperature, according to methods that have been described previously.1,2 Data of this type, obtained in the course of a general investigation of the effects of impurities on the properties of both oxygen-bearing 2nd oxygen-free copper are presented herewith. All samples except those containing cadmium were prepared as 3/8-in. continuously cast oxygen-free rod from pure copper and weighed amounts of a similarly synthesized master alloy. Composition was checked by chemical methods, which in every case verified the calculated analyses. Test wires were cold-drawn one B, and S. number per pass on a string-up machine using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in. and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Some oxygen-bearing samples were produced directly from the 3/8-in. oxygen-free rods by diffusion from a surface scale at 850°C. and drawn to size as listed above, but most of the alloys were remelted in pure graphite and cast through air into a I-in. round mold. The slugs were then hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed as listed above, and drawn to 0.081 inch. Conductivity wires were annealed for I hr. at 100°C. intervals between 300' and 800°F., using a hydrogen atmosphere for oxygen-free samples and purified nitrogen for the oxygen-bearing type. All samples were quenched from the annealing temperature in 10 per cent H²S04 and conductivity was measured on a Hoopes bridge that had been checked against a Kelvin bridge. The softening temperatures represent the half-hard stage of the annealing curve as determined by a standard procedure.' INTRODUCTION THIS paper attempts a survey of the principles involved in the com¬bustion of blast-furnace gas in boilers and stoves. I do not expect to be able to give much information which is actually new, since the laws and methods of calculation pertaining to this problem are contained in a number of handbooks; but, so far as I am aware, they have nowhere been treated exclusively with reference to this one problem of gas economy. The road which I follow is less that of strictly scientific research than that of the practical engineer, faced by operation problems which require a. quick solution by easily accessible means without a prolonged search in scientific handbooks. For this purpose I give a number of tables and diagrams, as well as the results of many years' practical working experience as combustion engineer, which I trust will prove useful to my readers. HISTORICAL Considering the tremendous efforts made during the last 15 years to increase the efficiency of all kinds of power plants, it is highly surprising that until a comparatively very recent period, progress in the economical combustion of blast-furnace gas has been so slow. The explanation generally put forth, that fuel has been so cheap that it was hardly worth while to bother about this economy, will not hold good, for the greatest trouble was taken to improve the combustion of coal and to reduce the consumption of steam. The most plausible explanation appears to be the general impression, held as an accepted fact, that gas, especially hot, uncleaned, blast-furnace gas, was not a good boiler fuel. Many managers of high repute had tried unsuccessfully to improve the conditions of its use, and the dictum went forth that efficiencies of over 60 per cent., particularly with high loads, were impossible. This was the situation not only in the United States, with very cheap fuel, but also in Europe, where fuel prices are twice and three times as high.

THE resolution presented at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E., calling on Congress to provide now for postwar accumulation of mineral stock piles under Government control, expresses, I think, the nearly unanimous view of the mining industry. As a result of the trying experiences of the first World War, Mr. Baruch, in his report of Dec. 24, 1919, to the President, urged that steps be taken at once to ensure adequate supplies of raw materials for future emergency. In the twenty years that followed, the same program was vigorously urged on Congress by many individuals and agencies, public and private, including the Secretaries of War and Navy, many members of Congress, the Bureau of Mines, the Planning Committee for Mineral Policy appointed by President Roosevelt, the A.I.M.E., the Mining and Metallurgical Society, and others.

INTRODUCTION The Cyprus Pima Mine is located 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona and about fifty miles north of the Mexican border. The Cyprus Pima orebody was discovered in 1950. Feasibility studies were begun in 1952 employing underground development. Economic studies showed open pit operations to be feasible and stripping of overburden was begun in late 1955. The first ore was reached in October of 1956. A 3,000 tpd (tons per day) concentrator was completed and began operation January 1, 1957. From these beginnings, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has expanded into a plant processing approximately 54,000 to 56,000 tpd. Four expansions were required to bring the plant up to its present capacity. Each expansion incorporated what had been learned in previous operation of the plant. The first expansion was completed in August of 1963 doubling design capacity to 6,000 tpd. In reality, because of softer than average ore, capacity was closer to 8,000 tpd. Expansion II was completed in July 1966 bringing design capacity to 18,000 tpd. Expansion III followed immediately. Completed in the summer of 1967, this expansion increased the design capacity to 30,000 tpd. The actual dry tonnage of this portion of the operation in 1974 averaged 38,400 tpd, again, primarily as the result of treating softer than average ore. The latest expansion (Expansion IV), completed in December 1971 and utilizing a semi-autoge- nous grinding circuit, is located in a separate building (Mill II) approximately 200 yards southeast of the original mill (Mill I). Expansion IV was designed for 14,000 tpd, but after circuit modifications, averaged 16,500 tpd in 1974.

WIDESPREAD experimentation has been conducted in recent years to devise a means of preventing intergranular corrosion in austenitic chromium-nickel steels of the 18 per cent chromium-8 per cent nickel type. Additions of titanium to these steels have been used commercially to overcome this difficulty, as advocated by Krupp of Germany, and the latest literature reference concerning improved details of this method is the article by Bain, Aborn and Rutherford.1 Extensive work by the present authors has shown columbium also to be a particularly valuable agent for inhibiting intergranular corrosion. This paper does not deal with steels that are largely or wholly aus-tenitic ; it is limited to a discussion of the results obtained through the use of titanium and columbium in plain high-chromium steels. For many years titanium has been used commercially by some steelmakers as a cleanser, and to a lesser extent as a hardener, but then in greater per-centages. The results of the work to be described disclose that titanium and columbium in proper proportions act as effective softeners in the high-chromium steels. It is well known that chromium intensifies the hardening effect of carbon in steel; it imparts pronounced air-hardening properties within a rather wide range of chromium content; it provides increased ductility in steels of given strength and hardness; and it enhances resistance to corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures to a marked degree. However, in applications requiring a combination of some of these valu-able properties great hardness is frequently a detriment rather than a merit. When the objective is a soft and ductile steel having optimum corrosion resistance, the producer strives for a carbon content as low as commercially practicable.

IT is no great exaggeration to say that present grinding practice and economics are largely determined by lining design. A record of outstanding liner wear can be achieved with any liner surface pattern that will positively lock the outer layer or layers of grinding media. With no slippage, lining wear is bound to be slight. At the same time, popular practice calls for tumbling loads of about 50 pct of mill volume to obtain maximum grinding capacity. Innumerable parallel grinding investigations have verified that optimum speed for such a mill lies within 70 to 85 pct of theoretical critical speed. If the mill is speeded up to 100 pct of critical, little or no grinding can be accomplished. Earlier Work on Supercritical Grinding: First investigations concerning grinding at supercritical speeds seem to be very old. Remarkable work on the subject has been performed by White,&apos; and his experiments have been described and summarized by Richards.&apos; White&apos;s contributions seem to have passed unnoticed by Fahrenwald,2,3 whose extensive experiments have been well presented, yet apparently very little appreciated. Additional work on grinding at supercritical speed has been reported, e.g., by Lewenson and Tscherny,&apos; USSR; Anselm and Grunder,&apos;, Germany: and Rose and Evans." Great Britain. Subcritical and Supercritical Speeds: In the formula of the critical speed given in the textbooks of mineral dressing, no factor indicating the coefficient of friction is generally included. If this factor = 1.0, which is equivalent to grinding conditions in a mill provided with heavily ribbed lining, the formula of the critical speed holds as such and grinding is possible at subcritical speeds only. In a mill equipped with a smooth or relatively smooth lining, the numerical value of the friction factor in the denominator of the formula becomes <1.0, indicating that grinding at supercritical speeds should be possible in such mills. It has been recently shown by the author&apos; that a wide supercritical speed range will become available for grinding—and especially for fine grinding—if the basic conditions within the mill have been selected properly. Mathematical analysis of mill dynamics at supercritical speeds&apos; has indicated that the mill speed may be increased if: 1) total mass of grinding medium decreases, 2) mass of the individual grinding piece increases, and 3) the coefficient of friction between the outer layer of medium and the mill lining decreases. It is obvious that the mass of the individual grinding piece will be affected by its shape and by its specific gravity. The coefficient of friction decreases with: 1) increasing smoothness of liner surface, 2) increasing roundness of the grinding piece, 3) increasing fineness of material to be ground, 4) decreasing pulp density, and 5) decreasing hardness (abrasiveness) of the mineral to be ground. In a mill equipped with heavily ribbed lining, practically no size reduction will take place between the lining and the outer layer of tumbling medium, because slippage is prevented. In the overwhelming majority of today&apos;s mills the grinding accomplished is by virtue of cataracting and/or cascading media with some action within the tumbling charge. Sub-critical speeds only can be applied. In grate-type or peripheral discharge mills equipped with a smooth lining a tumbling load of any kind of common medium occupying about 50 pct of mill volume will behave in such a way that practically no slippage will take place. This has been verified in experiments run by the author in the laboratory and in pilot plant mills&apos; equipped with smooth lining. Again, the operation is limited to the subcritical range. In a mill with a smooth lining, grinding will be possible either at subcritical speeds or within a wide supercritical speed range as soon as the basic requirements for a desired speed are fulfilled. In a mill operated at supercritical speed, any point on the liner surface proceeds at a speed greater than that indicated by the formula of the critical speed, while any grinding piece situated in the outer layer of the medium against the lining proceeds in the same direction at a speed less than that indicated by the critical speed. This speed difference produces a very effective attrition grinding zone between the liner surface and the outer layer of the medium. The share of attrition grinding of the total grinding accomplished increases rapidly with increasing speed in the supercritical speed range. The smooth surface of the mill lining may be well illustrated by the surface of a bucking board. The outer ball layer may be similarly represented by the lower surface of a muller. If the bucking board, the material to be ground, and the muller all proceed in the same direction at the same speed, no grinding will result. This is the general situation in the mills of today. If, however, the muller is pulled with respect to the board, moving or stationary, grinding will be accomplished effectively. FACED with rising costs, the mining industry is looking to new methods and equipment to supply the relief necessary for profitable operation. Conveyor transportation is rapidly taking a superior position to motor tramming in underground mines because of lower installation, maintenance, and operating costs. Haulage is always a critical problem in underground mining. The ease of operation and flexibility of a haulage system can have an important effect on ultimate mining cost. With the average tenor of ores on the downgrade, larger tonnages are required for the same metal recovery. This selection of a tramming system can be the key to a successful, paying plant. Because this shift is being made at an ever advancing rate, it may become necessary to tailor mining operations to the transportation system, rather than to select a haulage system fitting set mining methods. In choosing a haulage system, the relative costs of the various methods are of the greatest importance. Adapting the mine to one or the other type of tramming is not considered in the cost analysis, and very likely would make little difference, outside of location of drifts and raises. In the cost sheet, the problem presents recommendations for a conveyor installation and a comparison of equipment, installation, operation, maintenance, and power costs are made. INTRODUCTION THE importance of magnesium alloys in the manufacture of aircraft engines has been realized for many years. A concentrated effort has been exerted in the laboratories of the Dow Chemical Co. to develop magnesium-base alloys with improved properties at elevated temperatures whereby greater advantage can be taken of the inherent lightness of these materials. In an earlier publication,1 attention was called to the superior tensile properties and resistance to creep of cerium-containing magnesium alloys at temperatures up to 700°F. More recently, additional data on magnesium-cerium alloys have been furnished by Murphy and Payne.2 The present paper deals with the mechanical properties of sand-cast magnesium alloys containing zinc, at temperatures up to 500°F. The study includes binary Mg-Zn† alloys containing up to 10 pct zinc and several ternary and some polynary alloys based on the Mg-1Zn,†Mg-3Zn, Mg-4.4Zn, Mg-6Zn, and Mg-10Zn binaries. The compositional variation in the tensile properties, hardness, and creep at room and elevated temperatures, and in the electrical conductivity at room temperature has been determined. The results of these tests show that many zinc-containing magnesium alloys exhibit resistance to creep at elevated temperatures significantly higher than that of present commercial magnesium alloys, but lower than that of alloys of the magnesium-cerium type. In addition, they have high tensile properties at room and elevated temperatures and high conductivity. This combination of mechanical properties and conductivity indicates that these alloys should be given serious consideration for commercial applications involving exposure to temperatures higher than those to which present commercial magnesium alloys can be taken safely. LITERATURE The properties of sand-cast magnesium alloys containing zinc as a principal alloying element have not been investigated very extensively, especially at elevated temperatures. The following remarks, which are confined to sand-cast alloys, will serve as a summary of the most important references on this phase of magnesium metallurgy. The first recorded determination of the tensile strength of binary Mg-Zn alloys as a function of zinc content was reported by Aitchison.3 Similar studies, including the measurement of elongation and hardness, have been performed by Gann and Winston,4 Dumas and Rockaert,5 Haughton and Prytherch,6 and by Spitaler, the last being reported by Beck.7 A slight superiority in the tensile strength of chillcast Mg + 8 Zn alloy over the sand-cast alloy was noted by Maybrey 8 That alloys of magnesium containing 5 to 12 pct zinc

"In the spring of 1927, six members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers met for dinner at the Chemists&apos; Club in New York to discuss the possibility of setting up a committee within the Institute to further the current interest in the science of steelmaking. Attention&apos; to this subject had been crystallized by a symposium held by the Faraday Society in 1925. &apos; After a prolonged discussion, ranging from thermodynamics to slag conditioning, it was decided to approach the Institute with the request that a standing committee on "The Physical Chemistry of Steel Making" be set up. This committee proposed to promote scientific and practical papers on the subject, and was designed to cooperate with the Open Hearth Committee of the Institute in bringing scientific developments to the attention of open-hearth operators throughout the country... . "As the life of the [Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking] Committee lengthened and general interest in the technical phases of steelmaking grew, it became evident that there was a distinct need for a book that might serve the open-hearth interests to better advantage than standard texts whose scope is necessarily wide and whose detailed exposition of the open-hearth process is, therefore, somewhat limited. With this thought in mind, the Committee, after some years of consideration and debate, embarked on the venture of writing a manuscript on `Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking&apos;." The foregoing paragraphs, taken from the introduction by C. H. Herty, Jr. to the first edition, well describe the circumstances which led to the publication of "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking" in the spring of 1944. The book consisted of nineteen chapters contributed by twenty-three authors and edited by the staff of Alloys of Iron Research and T. S. Washburn, B. M. Larsen, and J. S. Marsh with Frank T. Sisco as consulting editor. The Engineering Foundation and the Open Hearth Steel Committee of the Iron and Steel Division, AIME, made financial grants; steel companies and other organizations supported the publication by contributing time and expenses of staff members in their capacity as authors or editors. This paper presents a method of predicting the recovery and performance of a five-spot steam injection project, in which a realistic approach to pattern sweepout efficiencies is made. Published methods for radial systems were modified for the five-spot pattern by approximating the stream lines with straight lines radiating from the injection well and then converging to the producing well. In each radial segment, the position of the steam front and the temperature profile ahead of the steam front were determined by heat balance equations, which included an estimation of heat losses to surrounding formations. The location of the saturations behind the cold water front was determined from a Buckley-Leverett solution to the material balance equation. Results from this program show steamflood recovery in a five-spot pattern to be considerably less than that predicted for true linear or radial flow systems. For a specific reservoir containing 900-cp oil, a steamflood in a purely radial flow system was predicted to recover more than 75 percent of the original oil in place when 2 PV of water had been injected as steam. A five-spot steamflood with otherwise identical properties was predicted to recover 10 percent of the original oil in place when 0.15 PV of water had been injected as steam and to recover almost no oil thereafter. A cold water five-spot flood in this system was predicted to recover approximately W percent of the oil in place with I PV of water injected. For a five-spot pattern in an example reservoir with 10-cp oil, steam injection similarly showed lower ultimate recovery than water injection but no improvement in recovery rule. Introduction The thermal recovery method considered in this study is steam injection in a five-spot pattern. Pattern steam injection has been given little attention in the past, possibly because of some rather obvious disadvantages. Unless steam temperature is maintained throughout the entire swept area, the process will revert to simple waterflood with all heat being lost prior to reaching the oil bank. Also, the oil viscosity reduction takes place near the steam front and not around the producing wellbore, so that low producing rates must still be endured. This is the reason for the success of the steam stimulation, or cyclic injection, in which the fluids are produced from the same well used for injection. On the other hand, steamflooding can offer some advantages. Oil displacement is by four methods: (1) mechanical displacement by the condensed water, (2) viscosity reduction of the crude oil, (3) swelling of the crude oil, and (4) distillation of the crude oil in the steam zone. Although dependent upon the crude, laboratory experiments have shown displacements up to 80 percent by steamflooding. In addition, steam is a good heat transport medium, since it is cheap and has a high heat content. Previous Investigations Previous publications have reported methods for predicting recovery in a steamflood for linear and radial systems. Since no pattern sweep efficiency is taken into consideration, the recovery even from a radial system must be greater than from more realistic geometries such as the very common five-spot patterns. Probably the broadest coverage is given by Willman who reported experimental results and offered a method of predicting recovery for a radial flow system. They concluded that both hot water and steam injection recover more oil than an ordinary waterflood, and that steam injection could yield recoveries "as much as 100 percent greater than by water flood." They also concluded that both the heat requirements for a reservoir and the residual oil remaining in the reservoir after steam injection were independent of the amount of oil originally in place, that short exploitation times were desirable, and that a high percentage of net sand in the reservoir with a high initial oil saturation was desirable. The method assumes that the flood occurs in three concentric cylindrical zones: (1) an inner steam zone, (2) a central hot water zone, and (3) an outer cold waterflood zone. Displacement in the steam zone is based on laboratory-determined residual oil saturations while the hot water and cold water zones use the conventional Buckley-Leverett equations. IT IS common to blame irregular assay results upon volatilization and much has been written upon the subject, but there is no. real evidence that, in a properly conducted assay, the loss of either gold or silver by volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result, even when, arsenic or antimony may be present. Bulk assays of flue dust from assay muffles have been published, but the data given are totally insufficient to even approximate the volatilization from a single assay; and such figures as we have indicate the volatilization to be extremely small. Diligent search in the literature and wide inquiry among assayers and instructors have failed to produce a single case where the litharge volatilized in making an assay has been collected and assayed for gold and silver. Having attempted to do this, with most indifferent success, I am not surprised that this has not been done. While various textbooks give volatilization as a cause of loss in cupellation, it may safely be said that in the rare cases where this volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result it is due to excessive temperature. Percy1 says "The loss of silver by volatilization during cupellation is very slight (unless the temperature has been much too high), and may be disregarded." This statement is repeated by the Beringers2 and Smith,3 who includes gold with silver. Mitchell4 says the litharge fume rarely contains over one ten-thousandth of silver. Campredon5 says that at a proper temperature no silver is lost by volatilization.
