ANTHRACITE ALTHOUGH the unmined anthracite will last for approximately 150 years, most of the thicker and cleaner coal beds have been almost entirely first-mined and pretty well robbed, leaving much of the present and future production to come from thin and dirtier beds. Herewith is a section of one of the dirty beds being mined in the Wyoming region [ ] This section shows that 45.8 per cent of the bed is made up of impurities and that the 45 in. of coal in the bed is in five benches, the thickest of which is 19 inches. In some localities of the anthracite region there are 14 beds of minable coal. Orderly and proper mining of the coal makes it necessary to rob or second-mine-almost all beds have already been first-mined-in sequence from the top downward. Therefore the robbing of the few remaining portions of the thicker and cleaner beds is in many instances being held up by the mining of the overlying thin and dirtier coal beds. Impurities Impurities consist of fire clay, slate, rock, and bone. The latter, which is black, contains 40 to 60 per cent carbon and often resembles good coal. In some beds there are also bands of "blue" coal, which, as the name implies, is of a bluish slaty color. Although much of this "blue" coal has a carbon content almost as high as the good anthracite, it is not

THE Enos Coal Mining Co. owns an area underlaid by coal, of approximately 5000 acres. This property is situated 9 miles from Oakland City, in the southern part of Indiana. The mine has been in operation 5 years, during which time some 350 acres have been stripped, and stripping is now proceeding at the rate of about 100 acres per year. TOPOGRAPHY These coal lands consist of gently-rolling agricultural fields which in times past were farmed for wheat. There is no timber and but very little brush to contend with. The overburden varies from 10 to 60 ft. in depth. A thin bed of slate overlies the coal, followed by limestone, which varies from 3 to 15 ft.; this, in turn, is followed by sandstone, slate, shale and clay. There is a very wide variation in the thickness of all of these beds. The coal has an average thickness of 5 ft., and is a good grade of high-volatile bituminous. MINING OPERATIONS Briefly, the sequence of operations is: drilling holes with churn drills; blasting with L. 0. X.; stripping overburden to, uncover coal and, finally taking up the coal, which is sent to a tipple for cleaning and sizing. In order to show what is being accomplished by the use of L. 0. X., results will be shown from May to November, 1926, inclusive, and compared to the same period in 1925. No work was done in No. 1 pit during May, 1925, hence all figures are unduly low for this month.

INTRODUCTION Primary grinding mills as defined in this paper, are autogenous or semi-autogenous rotating, tumbling mills having a coarse feed with a top size usually varying from 150 to 300 mm (6 to 12 inches). Most frequently, the feed to these mills is the product of primary crushing plants but in some cases run of mine ore is used as feed such as at Benguet, McDermitt, L-Bar Sohio, Bear Creek and others. The size of the largest lumps in the mill feed is principally determined by limits set by the mill feed trunnion diameter and by the type and size of conveying equipment used for handling and of bins and stockpiles used for storage. The use of primary mills in mineral processing plants has expanded very significantly in the last twenty years, and they have been successfully applied to the treatment of a wide variety of ores in both wet and dry grinding applications. In the present state of technological development for primary grinding mills, there is a wide choice of acceptable options with respect to type and size, grinding flowsheet and grinding media. The choice of the optimum combination which would result in the most satisfactory condition of operation, from the standpoint of both metallurgical results and costs, depends on the nature of the ore, the required characteristics of the grinding products and on various geographic and economic circumstances. The effects of such factors and considerations on the choice and sizing of primary grinding mills and flowsheets are reviewed and discussed in the following pages. PRIMARY MILLS SELECTION Inherent Characteristics of Primary Grinding Primary grinding is complex because it involves several comminution mechanisms which occur simultaneously and to some degree interfere with one another. These mechanisms of impact, attrition and abrasion have been described earlier. The relative importance of these three main grinding actions and their mutual balance resulting in a continuous uniform operation of the mill depend to a very large extent on the nature of the ore and its physical properties. INTRODUCTION IN the iron-cobalt system there are several property-composition relationships of theoretical importance. The alloys are ferromagnetic exhibiting a maximum saturation at approximately 33 at. pct cobalt;1 the interatomic distances at room temperature show large positive deviations from Vegard's rule;2 and in the region of 50 at. pct cobalt there is an order-disorder transition which has a large effect on other properties. The thermal expansion data for the system have been reported3,4.5,6 only from room temperature to 100°C, and for this temperature range a minimum in coefficient in the region of 50 at. pct cobalt is well established. 3,4,6 This paper reports the expansion properties in the iron-cobalt system for temperatures from 30 to 850°C, shows the correlation with other physical properties, and proposes an explanation for the interrelation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermal expansivities of iron-cobalt alloys in 10 pct steps in composition were determined from 30 to about 850°C. The major series of alloys was prepared by induction melting from Armco iron and cobalt rondelles with the addition of about 0.6 wt pct manganese. This series was supplemented by three compositions: high purity electrolytic iron, high purity electrolytic cobalt, and an alloy of 52.1 wt pct cobalt prepared from the high purity electrolytic iron and electrolytic cobalt by vacuum-melting. The compositions of both series of alloys are given in Table I. The specimens for measurement were prepared from the cast ingots by first hot-swaging followed in most instances by cold-swaging to 0.180-in. diam rod. Some alloys in the region of 50 pct cobalt, because of inherent cold-brittleness, were swaged hot to the final diameter. The expansion specimens were approximately 2 ½ in. long with flat-ground and polished ends. Before measurement they were annealed in hydrogen for r hr at 900°C. In the apparatus used for the thermal expansivity measurements (Fig I), a modification of that designed by Hidnert and Sweeney,7 the differential expansion between the specimen and vitreous silica was measured by a dial micrometer reading to 0.001 mm. An invar fixture supported the dial gauge, and this fixture, in turn, was connected to a split invar collar which supported the outer silica tube. A pyrex "T" was placed over the outer silica tube and was sealed to the invar collar by Apiezon Q sealing compound. A movable hollow vitreous silica rod which rested on top of the test specimen slid through a flexible rubber diaphragm cemented to the top of the pyrex "T." The specimen rested on a vitreous silica pedestal fused into the outer tube and was kept centered by a silica sleeve. A non-oxidizing atmosphere was obtained by admitting hydrogen into the

The red, or fossiliferous, ore is found in the Clinton group of the Silurian formation. This group is from 100 to 500 ft. thick in Alabama, and its outcrops have been mapped by the State or the U. S. Geological Survey. In some places, it is entirely missing (doubtless islands in the Silurian Sea). In Etowah County, in part of Greasy Cove and vicinity, the upper seam is a coral reef impregnated with the red ore; in this same county, step faults bring up the ore in three or four practically parallel ridges. In Blount County and on Raccoon Mountain, the ore runs under the carboniferous rocks and outcrops in the valleys. When examining the logs of holes drilled for oil, wherever the drill has gone deep enough, the writer has found the Clinton group underlying the Warrior coal field. The following records of holes drilled primarily for oil, given in Bull. No. 22, Geological Survey of Alabama, show the presence of either ore or red rock, and suggest vast resources yet to be outlined and developed for ore in the future. The locations are given by number on the map. Hole No. 1 was drilled 6 miles southeast of Russellville, Franklin County, by the Woodward Oil & Gas Co. It passed through 160 ft. of the Clinton, but only a small show of red ore was found at 1280-1400 ft. A test well, No. 2, drilled near Atwood, Franklin County, in sectioil 26, township 8, range 14, penetrated the Clinton at 1608 ft. and found 38 ft. of limy red rock, also 8 ft. of some blood red ending at 1820 ft., making 46 ft. of red rock in all. It is reported that some good ore was cut through but this work was done by a churn drill. At least 400 ft. of the formation was classified as Clinton. Well NO. 3, called Frankford Well, was bored by S. A. Hobson and associates in the northwest quarter of section 7, township 6, range 12, Franklin County. At 927 ft., it is supposed to have entered the Clinton; the log is as follows: Ft. The transformations in eutectoidal systems have been extensively studied as they occur in steels.&apos; As a consequence of these studies the martensite, bainite and pearlite reactions found for most steels are widely recognized. Further, because of the work of Smith and Lindlief2 and of Greninger and Troiano3 these reactions, except for the bainite reaction, are considered as typical for all eutectoidal systems. The primary alloy studied by Smith and Lindlief2 was a CuAl alloy of near eutectoid composition as was the alloy more recently studied by Mack.4 The transformations in these alloys were, for the most part, studied metallo-graphically, while an X ray analysis of structures was essentially wanting. It has appeared desirable, therefore, to investigate selected CuAl alloys at and slightly away from eutectoid composition. For this purpose three alloys were prepared containing 10.5,11.9 and 13.5 pct A1 respectively. The results of a metallographic and X ray analysis of structures obtained for isothermal transformation of the ß-phase are reported here for the 11.9 and 13.5 pct A1 alloys. Introduction The phase equilibria in the CuAl alloys of immediate concern are indicated in the equilibrium diagram section presented in Fig 1.5 The equilibrium and transition structures which have been reported in this system are as follows: a = copper rich terminal phase (f.c.c.) ß = high temperature eutectoidal phase (b.c.c.) r2 = aluminum-rich intermediate phase (r-brass structure) a&apos; = modified a-phase postulated by Bollenrath and Bungnrdt.26 ß1 = ordered ß (b.c.c.) ß&apos; = martensite structure: A1 < 13 pct (near h.c.p.) ß" = ß&apos; of Smith and Lindlief2 7&apos; = martensite structure: A1 > 13.5 pct (h.c.p.); ß2 of Bollenrath and Bungardt.26 The eutectoid transformation can be suppressed at sufficiently high cooling velocities. The ß-phase is then retained to about 500°C where ordering sets in. The ordering interval is not satisfactorily known but indirectly appears to be non-suppressible. Subsequent to the ordering reaction and consequently at lower temperatures, the ordered ß1 decomposes to a marten-sitic structure. The kinetics of these reactions and in particular those of the martensite reaction have an important bearing on the results obtained in this investigation. Since some confusion exists concerning certain reported aspects of these reactions, they will be considered in some detail. ALTHOUGH brasses and bronzes have been made for ages, a systematic study of their physical properties has been carried out only during the years of the present century. Among these properties may be included those which are to be detected by means of microscopic examination; in other. words by the science of metallography. The earlier workers in this field, both in this country and abroad, gave their attention to steel. When the senior author explored the situation in 1902, there was little encouragement to be found in undertaking the study of the non-ferrous alloys. A start was made, and the metallography of the brasses and bronzes, as well as of the copper-nickel-zinc alloys developed materially under his direction. Annealing experiments were begun in 1902, and in the succeeding years the effect of temperature, and the influence of previous working, on the grain size of brass were studied. The conclusions so well known and widely published today were largely reached during those earlier years. . In 1905 the first complete annealing series were made. By this it is meant that brass and copper sheet, 5 B & S Nos. hard, was machined into tensile test specimens, then annealed under accurate control for 30 min. at temperatures up to the melting point of the material. Various determinations were made, including tensile strength and elongation in 2 in. There rapidly followed similar series on all of the copper-zinc alloys from 100 to 60 per cent. copper, on the bronzes, cupronickels, and on copper-zinc-nickel alloys. At this point there was published by Grard, in October, 1909,1 the very comprehensive and complete work on the tensile properties of cartridge brass, 90-10 copper-zinc, and electrolytic copper. The excellent photomicrographs in that paper illustrated the changes in structure produced by cold rolling as well as by annealing at different temperatures, but where Grard&apos;s work was confined to copper and to two alloys, the investigations in this laboratory have been over the entire fields of the commercial copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, representative copper-nickel and copper-nickel-zinc alloys as well as aluminum bronzes and others of a more special nature.

ALTHOUGH the mechanical cleaning of coal is carried out at plants on the surface, preparation is actually begun at the face in the mine. Here the character of the coal and the amount, character, and distribution of the impurities within the bed may be seen. Blasting methods, dust-allaying procedures, location of mining cut with respect to bands of impurity, and the practice of discarding segregated impurities underground, all have an important bearing on the successful operation of surface cleaning units. The most important single characteristic of both coal and its associated impurities from the standpoint of cleaning is specific gravity. Other characteristics related in one way or another to the preparation , of coal are rank, petrographic composition, structure and hardness, and friability. These and still other coal properties are discussed in the first section of this chapter and impurity characteristics in the second. COAL CHARACTERISTICS RELATED TO PREPARATION Rank As a result of work done over a period of several years by committees of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association, standard specifications are now available showing the &apos;classification of coals according to rank and quality of grade.&apos; The term "rank" expresses the degree to which the original coal-forming material has been changed by metamorphism through successive stages from peat to anthracite. INFORMATION regarding the use of manganese alloys has hitherto been incomplete and available only from widely scattered sources. This paper attempts a systematic description of properties and uses of alloys other than manganese bronze, manganin and duralumin, which are probably the only non-ferrous alloys associated with manganese in the minds of most metallurgists.1 PROPERTIES OF MANGANESE Manganese can react either acid or basic; it is hard to obtain in the pure state; it has two different crystalline lattice structures, both of the cubic system, one stable above 850° C. and the other below 650° C., both coexisting in the intermediate range. Although the commercial product is hard and brittle, the pure metal seems to be ductile. In fact Zhemchuzhny, in Russia, was able to obtain ductile manganese and draw it to fine wires by the simple expedient of adding about 3 per cent. copper to the alumino-thermic product. Copper most probably brings the sili-cides, aluminides, nitrides and carbides present in the commercial product into a much less harmful form of distribution. One industrial use that can be foreseen for wrought manganese articles is as anodes for electrolytic processes in sulfate and nitrate solutions, particularly with high voltages. A practically insoluble skin of manganese peroxide is likely to form in such cases and an insoluble and strong anode material will be available.

Three anhydrous zinc sulfates have been identified. They are: ZnSO,(a), stable below 1007°K; ZnS04(/3), stable above 1007OK; and ZnO.ZZnSO,. The decomposition pressure of each sulfate has been measured and the following relations calculated from the results: The measured data have been combined with the known themzodynamic properties of ZnS, ZnO, Zn, SO,, and SO, to yield univariant and bivariant phase diagrams for the system Zn-S-0. The application of these diagrams to problems of roasting zinc concentrates is discussed. PRESENT knowledge of the equilibrium chemistry of the system Zn-S:O, so essential to scientific control of zinc-blende roasting, is deficient in several respects. A basic sulfate of zinc has been reported by many investigators, but its composition is in doubt and its thermodynamic properties have not been measured. Our scanty knowledge of the properties of the normal sulfate at roasting temperatures is based on old and inexact studies. A crystal transformation in the normal sulfate, involving a sizable heat effect, has been noted by several investigators but has never been quantified. The studies reported herein were designed to fill these gaps in knowledge and to make possible a reasonably complete thermodynamic description of the system Zn-S-0 at roasting temperatures. The results make possible a far more exact understanding of zinc roasting chemistry than was hitherto possible. EXPERIMENTAL The principal experimental technique employed was the measurement of the total gas pressure developed from decomposition of either ZnSO, or ZnO2ZnS0, in a closed system. The apparatus employed was essentially the same as that described by Warner and lngrahaml and Flengas and tngraham.&apos; The unusual feature is a flexible Pyrex bellows used to separate the reaction gas mixture (S03, SOz, and 02) from the mercury in the manometer and thus prevent corrosion of the mercury by SO3. The bellows operates without evidence of hysteresis and, barring accidents, may be used for several months. The response of the bellows varies from manometer to manometer, but is generally of the order of 0.6-cm displacement for a l-cm change in pressure. The response for all manometers has been linear over the range 0 to 1 atm. To prevent condensation and polymerization of sulfur trioxide, the bellows-manometer was maintained at 100.0" * 0.5" by a circulating bath of silicone oil. The connecting tubing between the manometer and the furnace was maintained at 100.0" * 0.2"* also, with a stirred air bath. The open end of the manometer was connected with a chamber which was maintained at a known pressure. The pressure could be varied so that readings of the height of the mercury column, measured with a cathetometer, could be made with both rising and falling mercury column. By using the average of the readings, any error due to sticking of the mercury column was minimized. The sample was placed in a 2-in.-long platinum boat formed into the shape of a half-cylinder. The sample was prepared as a fine powder and pressed against the inner wall of the platinum boat. A silica thermocouple well, covered with a platinum sleeve, was placed lengthwise along the center of the boat. The temperature of the sample was read on a calibrated Pt-10 pct Rh theirnocouple. The temperature profile of the furnace was constant within ± 0.2 C over the length of furnace occupied by the sample. The horizontal furnace used to contain the sample and the quartz reaction tube was electrically heated, with the control thermocouple placed 1/4 in. from the windings. A Brown Pyro-O-Vane temperature controller with a 3-sec response time was used to maintain the furnace temperature. THE liability for damages to the surface caused by subsidence is an ever present threat in all underground mining. In ordinary lode mining, this threat rarely materializes into an action, due to the method of mining metalliferous ores, the dip of the veins, and the nature of the ground itself. In the mining of coal, however, this threat is very real. The coal frequently lies close to the surface, in beds underlying large areas of land of which the surface is suitable for agricultural or urban development. Furthermore, the coal is generally mined by the "room and pillar " method and when the pillars of coal are removed, the subjacent support is destroyed. This question of the duty of surface support has now become a very live one in Colorado. What was waste prairie land a few years ago has become valuable agricultural land dotted here and there with growing towns. Frequent references will be made here to Colorado conditions and adjudicated cases, but those conditions and cases and the conclusions to be drawn therefrom are applicable to all coal-mining states. Briefly stated, the question is "Does the owner of the substrata or underlying mineral owe any duty of surface support to the owner of the superjacent strata or surface?" There is no absolute duty of support owed by the mineral owner and this assertion is made with full knowledge of numerous expressions to the contrary by courts of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and other coal-mining states. Whether or not any duty exists depends upon the circumstances surrounding each case, and since in the nature of things those circumstances are rarely identical, there can be no absolute rule.

THE Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co. is situated at Los Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, about 75 mi. (120.7 km.) South of the international boundary and about 7 mi. (11.26 kin.) east of the town of Nacozari de Garcia. It is situated at an elevation of 5000 ft. (1524 m.) in one of the northward trending ridges that form part of the mountain mass that culminates in the Sierra Madre de Mexico. To the east, south, and west, the topography is rugged and diversified; to the north less diversity exists, ranges of mountains rise sharply out of almost level ground and give the basin range structure characteristic of the southwest. The climate is dry, the average rainfall of 15 in. (38 cm.) being confined almost entirely to the months of June, July, and August. The

The scale md subscale reaction products were identified and their rates of formation were studied in air over the range 1600" to 2000°F (871 " to 1149°C) for periods of up to 400 hr and for hoth the solution-annealed and aged conditions. The effect of prior sltrface preparation on suhscale oxidation was also studied The general oxidation behavior of both Ni-Cr-Mo-Al-Ti type alloys was similar. A surface film of a, Al2O3, forms immediately on exposure Subsequent oxidation continued at a linear rate (QL = 55 * 5 kcal per mole) as colonies of Cr2O3 nucleated at the A12O3/gas interface Further oxidation proceeded at a paraholic rate zvhiclz could he fitted to two successive rate constants. During paraholic oxidation, and depending on temperature, the scale consisted of Cr2O3, NiCr2O4 , and TiO2 with traces of NiO. In the case of Rene 41, the activation energy of both paraholic processes was 66 * 3 kcal per mole suggesting that diffusion of cations tlzrozrgh Cr2O3 was the rate -determining process. An unusual decrease in the oxidation of Udimet 700 at 1900°F where a spinel of Ni(A1,Crh0, zuas the predominant reaction product prevented the accurate assignment of activation energies for this composition. In both alloys internal oxidation of Al2O3 commenced shortly after parabolic scaling was observed. Prolonged exposure prod7tced intemal oxidation of TiN, and in Udimet 700 a complex Mo-Ni nitride was also found. At 1900oF, the subscale reactions in Udimet 700 undergo an inversion which parallels the decrease in surface oxidation; internal oxidation ceases hut is replaced by the formation of "spherodized" 3.&apos; colonies. Surface-preparation techniqtles which introduce appreciable working, such as coarse surface grinding or grit blasting. increase the amount of alloy depletion and internal oxidation in Reni 41. The reverse is true of Udimet 700 for which electropolished or mechanically polished specimens show much more subscale oxidation than strongly worked stirfaces. The strongest commercial nickel-base alloys presently available are generic to the Ni-Cr-Mo-A1-Ti base which exploits the precipitation of Ni3(A1,Ti) as the main strengthening mechanism, while relying on solid-solution strengthening by molybdenum and chromium reinforced by the pre- cipitation of carbides to attain maximum properties. This study characterizes the oxidation behavior of Rene 41, the strongest alloy of the Ni-Cr-A1-Ti type commercially available in sheet form, and Udimet 700, whose higher aluminum and titanium content allows it to exhibit one of the more attractive combinations of high-temperature properties available in a wrought product. The scaling processes of complex, type nickel-base alloys have received relatively little attention. Malamand and vidal as well as Poulignier et al.2&apos;3 have determined the composition gradients across the metal/oxide interface produced by high-temperature oxidation and considered the effect of surface perature, Limited weight-gain data has also been published by Fere 5 for alloys of this type and Radavich6 has identified the reaction products on Udimet 500 and Inco 702 after oxidation at 1832°F. Reference can, of course, be made to the excellent reviews of Kubaschewski and Hopkins7 or Ignatov and Shamgunova8 for a summary of the data available on the oxidation of binary and ternary alloy systems which are related to the more complex alloys considered here. EXPERIMENTAL The analyses of the different commercial heats studied are given in Table I. Using the experimental procedures previously established,9 continuous weight-gain data were obtained on both heats of Rene 41 sheet (A and B) and 150-mil-thick slices of cast Udimet 700. Subscale oxidation reactions were followed by static exposure of cylindrical specimens obtained from swaged Rene 41 (Heat C) and Udimet 700 (Heats E and F). In brief, continuous weight-gain tests were performed on specimens with a surface area of 10 to 12 sq cm. These were abraded through 600 grit Sic paper, electropolished to 2p rms in an electrolyte of 10 pct H2So4 in ethanol, and lightly etched in 10 pct HCl in ethanol before final washing and rinsing in ethanol. All continuous weight-gain data were obtained in dried (-70°F dew point) flowing (1 liter per min) air to an accuracy of +0.1 mg. Subscale oxidation processes were followed by the metallographic examination of 0.5-in-diam by 1.0-in.-long specimens. After an initial center-less grinding, various additional surface treatments were employed to determine the effect of surface preparation on subscale oxidation processes. Before exposure in zirconia crucibles, all samples were lightly etched in 10 pct HCl-ethanol, washed in ethanol, and dried. The grain boundary adsorption of solutes as a function of bulk concentration and solution temperature was studied using internal-frictimz techniques. From the variation of the cor-responding energy of activation for the Phenomenon, the inter-actior2 energy between a solute atom and a high-angle boundary was calculated. Interaction energies in the range of 0.3 ev were obtained, and were used to obtain the actual concentration of solute at the grain boundary. In corroboralory creel, studies the direct grain boundary contribution to the total creep strain was measured. It was found that the interface creep varied with the type and magnitude of the solute adsorbed. Subscribing to the theory of their being energetically favorable sites at the grain boundary for solutes of both Positive and negative size deviations, ternaries were investigated in Which solutes of both types were present. A marked increase in the resistance to grain boundary creep was manifested. THE major difficulty which has been encountered in investigations of the grain boundary segregation of solutes has been the lack of a sufficiently sensitive method of measuring the amount of adsorbed solute at the boundary. For the general case of a high-angle boundary, no direct method of measuring the adsorption at the boundary has been found to date. Internal friction has been used in several studies of grain boundary adsorption1-3 and although it is somewhat indirect, it was demonstrated to have the necessary sensitivity. In this investigation the authors have used internal-friction techniques in conjunction with a study of the grain boundary contribution to the total creep strain. As both parts of the investigation were performed on the same specimens it was possible to combine a highly sensitive technique with a somewhat more direct method in order to obtain information about the adsorption phenomenon. From internal-friction studies the rate of increase of the activation energy was observed to be a function of the difference in size between the solute and solvent atoms. It was proposed that if Gibbs&apos; adsorption isotherm is considered, i.e., where r is the excess solute at the boundary, c is the bulk concentration, and ay/ac is the change in grain boundary energy with bulk concentration, then AH b/ac must vary in the same way as ay/ac and therefore In this way a relative measure of the grain boundary adsorption of solutes is directly obtainable from in-ternal-friction studies. If the previous work in the field of grain boundary adsorption of solutes is examined, certain apparent information is desirable if the phenomenon is to be understood. The most important questions that must be asked are as follows: 1) Is the adsorption of solutes at the grain boundary an equilibrium process? 2) Can the Mott model of the grain boundary be used as a basis of setting up an elastic interaction between the grain boundary and solute atoms? 3) Is it possible to obtain an exact measure of the excess solute at the grain boundary as a function of temperature and bulk concentration rather than merely a relative measure of the adsorption 4) Are the conclusions obtained from an indirect method such as internal-friction studies meaningful in considering gross grain boundary effects such as creep? MY first Nevada City mining reminiscence is one of seeing Capt. Thomas Mein, over 52 years ago, in the old Wyoming mill on Deer Creek about a mile below the town of Nevada City. Captain Mein was then superintendent of the Wyoming mine, where the old fashioned Cornish pump was used, as well as hurdy-gurdy water wheels for power. This mill was one of the typical, up-to-date mills of that time and consisted of stamps, fed by Chinese hand feeders, who also cobbed the ore down to a small enough size to be fed into the mortars. Stamps at that time were of light weight and crushed about one ton to one and a half tons to the stamp, the pulp going over plates, then into sluices with self-raising gates. When a sluice became full the pulp was shut off and directed into the parallel sluice, also with a self-raising gate. The concentrate thus collected in the sluice was shoveled out and carried to Cornish buddles and there cleaned up, preparatory to being sent to a local custom chlorination works.

The Caddo oil-field, shown in Fig. 1, is located in Caddo parish, northwestern Louisiana. The known producing territory of oil is covered by townships 19 N, 20 N, 21 N, 22 N, and ranges 15 and 16 W., shown in Fig. 2. The center of the field may be taken as Oil City, 24 miles north of Shreveport, on the Kansas City Southern railway. Shreveport is the second largest city in the State, and is the connecting point of five railroad-lines. Drilling at the present time, however, is going on all over northern Louisiana, especially in Caddo and the neighboring parishes. During the winter of 1908-09 I spent &apos;four months in the Caddo field, under the direction of the Louisiana Geological Survey and the U. S. Geological Survey. II. History and Development. Natural gas escaping at the surface is found at numerous places in northwestern Louisiana. At Shreveport, the plant of the Shreveport Ice & Refrigerating Co. has been lighted by natural gas for 20 years. The well was drilled for water, but was abandoned on account of the gas. A test well, put down in 1905 near the western limits of Shreveport, was driven to 1,650 ft., and encountered indications of gas and oil at various depths, but did not succeed in finding enough to be profitable. Attention was first attracted to the Caddo field in 1895 by indications in water-wells from 40 to 60 ft. deep, in which the pressure of natural gas was noticeable. This indication of gas in a shallow well led to the drilling of the first well in the Caddo field, the old Savage Brothers & Morricell, or the Caddo Lake Oil and Pipe Line No. 1. The rig for this well was erected in May, 1904, and drilling began in June, 1904. The well was bailed Mar. 23, 1905, with a small amount of oil. It was deepened July, 1905, and converted into a "gasser" Jan. 3, 1906. It was abandoned January, 1907. A GEOLOGIST --one versed in geology, the science which treats of the history of the earth and its life, especially as recorded in the rocks; that is Webster&apos;s definition. William Embry Wrather-one of the country&apos;s foremost geologists who heads the U. S. Geological Survey; this is the 1948 President of the Institute. He has studied the geology of areas on the face of the earth as far-flung as Texas and the Balkans, and now heads the world&apos;s largest staff of geologists. Vital statistics on Dr. Wrather would show his place of birth as Brandenburg, Ky., the year 1883. He will celebrate his threescore and five years of full living the twentieth of this month. As is usual in biographical sketches of this nature, the formative years of youth, and in many ways the most important years of one&apos;s life (since professional tendencies as well as many important personal decisions are evidenced before the teens are left behind) are passed over with the mere fact noted that a degree was earned at such and such educational institution. And so we note that Dr. Wrather received his Ph.B. degree at the University of Chicago in 1907, and followed up that degree with two years of graduate study.

No true conception of the Park City mining district can be obtained without first giving consideration to the part it has played as a consistent producer of mineral wealth. Its position in this regard is almost unique in the annals of a lead silver camp. For over fifty years it has been a continuous producer of lead and silver and for twenty years it has added to the world&apos;s supply of zinc. Few camps with its productive history are so little known to the mining fraternity for the reason that its life has never been punctuated by periods of "boom" which serve to attract general attention, neither has it been the field of operation for promoters who temporarily focus attention upon their scene of action. Its history is one of legitimate mining operations. These were at first carried on by a number of smaller companies. A period of consolidation followed and at the present time the entire production of the camp is in the hands of two major companies and one smaller company. These are flanked by a number of prospecting properties, which are at this time actively engaged in the search for ores and later events will doubtless put some of them in the producing class.

Just as some students postpone the necessary shave or forget to change their collars, so young engineers in writing drop their articles, definite and indefinite, or omit prepositions where they are required, possibly to compensate for these they use unnecessarily The work will begin [on] Saturday. The work will begin [on] Saturday. `Influenza seriously affected many mines [during] the last three months. Flotation in America [during] the last two years has made tremendous strides. Construction of the mill started [on] August 12, 1915, at which time 75% of the excavation was completed. The idea I wish to convey is [that] there are mineral deposits to which the present law applies badly. For this reason, if there was [for] no other, the ownership of the ore below and [of] the surface above should go together. When a unit of mapping is furnished, be the unit a claim or [a] group of claims, it is necessary .. . A fully stocked store was started in Park City and all employees [were] sold merchandise on a strictly cost basis. The word "merchandise" is left without government or agreement.
