I WISH to urge on this Committee the task of evaluating mining geology. -My motive is as follows: It, is a. duty of the Institute from time to5 time, to establish the social perspective of the professions grouped within it, not simply to promote their use, but to determine with engineering definiteness their true powers and functions. This becomes the delegated duty, therefore, of this committee in respect to geology. Be- cause my own subject is mining, I shall confine my remarks to mining geology. But I believe that the evaluation should be made to include all of that geology termed economic. The perspective for such evaluation is shown in the nature of the public support given to geology. The federal Geological Survey, the leading organization on the economic side, is actuated by the zeal of a small group of devoted professionals who consider its work valuable, ' It proceeds, however, on a starvation ration of appropriations, and that implies that neither the corporations, the voters nor the vote getters consider it important. Altogether, in' the public consciousness, geology is negligible. That, at the same moment, .the profession should act with full confidence, while everyone else should act' with opposite motives, is not fitting. For us, as a committee, to remain incurious regarding such a disparity of beliefs is quite impossible.

The Bulletin. As already announced in the January Bulletin, this publication will be issued during the coming year monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will be: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. A supplementary session of this meeting will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the further discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. The XCVIIth meeting will be held on the Pacific Coast, including a visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. More definite information will be announced at the New Haven Meeting, or at the earliest possible date thereafter.

This paper gives results of an experimental study of the sweep efficiency of a miscible displacement in a five-spot. The study was carried out in a parallel-plate glass model in which effects of diffusion were scaled at or near the molecular diffusion level. The experiments show that very early breakthrough (25 to 35 per cent of pore volume (PV) injected) may be expected in miscible floods because of the unfavorable viscosity ratio. However after 1 PV of displacing fluid is injected, the sweep rises to a reasonable value (50 to 60 per cent). Photographs show that small slugs of less than 10 per cent of PV tend to dissipate before breakthrough. A minimum slug size of 15 per cent of PV would appear to be necessary even in a relatively homogeneous formation. Presence of a slug whose viscosity is inter-mediate between that of oil and gas increases the sweep efficiency of the oil-gas system. In a typical system the sweep at breakthrough rose from 26 to 37 per cent of PV for a 25 per cent slug. The increase in sweep brought about by use of a large slug could well pay for the extra deferment cost of the additional slug material. INTRODUCTION Most miscible displacement processes involve the displacement of oil with fluids of much lower viscosity and density. The displacement process at these adverse viscosity and density ratios is dominated by instability phenomena, i.e., viscous fingers and gravity tongues. These phenomena have highly adverse effects on oil recovery. Although a number of laboratory studies have been made to determine the effect of adverse viscosity ratios on five-spot sweep patterns,l,2 the scaling of diffusion effects is uncertain. In the series of scaled model studies reported herein, an attempt was made to scale diffusion. Model studies of miscible displacements in which molecular diffusion predominates are per-mitted by controlling the parallel plate spacing which reduces convective mixing to arbitrarily small levels. To decide how this scaling relates to any particular Geld displacement necessitates an estimation of diffusion effects for the natural rock being considered and conditions under which displacement will be conducted. The approach normally taken is to extrapolate data obtained from stable miscible displacements performed in the laboratory, such as those presented by Brigham et al.3 The validity with which such an extrapolation can be applied to an unstable flow system has yet to be established. If this approach is accepted, a family of oil recovery curves can be generated for a single viscosity ratio based on Brigham's observation that the magnitude of the dispersion coefficient is dependent, among other things, upon specific rock properties. Objective of our test was to define the lower limit of this range by presenting the case where dispersion effects were reduced to the molecular diffusion level in both the transverse and longitudinal directions.

IN the past five years, and without much fanfare, Turkey has emerged as a significant figure in the world mining picture. This has been accomplished by a five-year plan now in its last year. A second five-year plan is already under way, ahead of schedule. It will concentrate even more than the first in developing Turkish mines in order to increase present exports of coal, chrome ore, and copper, and to develop new mineral exports as well. To be fully understand the republicic?s mining program should be considered as something more than merely tapping rich resources in the East along the Aegean Sea, in the North among the mountains descending to the Black Sea, and in the West at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. It should also be viewed in the light of a strong nationalist policy with many aspects of state socialism. Turkey declares frankly that all mineral re- sources belong to the nation and all exploitation should be by the state for the twin purpose of modernizing the state and securing foreign exchange for the state by exports. Accordingly, the principal mines are state-operated and a few lesser enterprises, although not state-owned, have at least been put in the hands of Turkish capital.

FUEL-OIL was first substituted for coal at these works in September, 1888. It was first applied in the converting-department to the battery of boilers, consisting of 14 tubular boilers, 16 feet in length by 5 feet in diameter. To operate these boilers with coal for 24 hours required 14 strikers, 3 ash-wheelers, 6 men unloading coal, and 2 water-tenders, making a total of 25 men. With fuel-oil the same boilers require for the same period 2 water-tenders and 4 men to attend to the burners, making a total of 6 men. This gives a saving of 19 men, which, at an average of $2 per day each, amounts to $38 per day. Comparing the consumption of oil with that of coal, we find that for the week ending January 5, 1889, with an ingot output of 6403 tons, 2731 barrels of fuel-oil were used as against a necessary consumption of coal for the same work of 848 tons, showing 3.22 barrels of fuel-oil to be equivalent to one ton of Indiana block-coal. Figuring oil at 60 cents per barrel, and coal at $2.15 per ton, we have as the cost of oil $1.93, as against $2.15 for its equivalent in coal. In December, 1888, the rail-mill battery of 26 boilers, of the same dimensions as those in the converting-department, was equipped for fuel-oil. For the week ending January 5, 1889, with a rail out-put of 5208 tons, 5987 barrels of oil were consumed, as against a necessary consumption of coal, to do the same work, of 1805 tons, showing 3.31 barrels of fuel-oil to be equivalent to one ton of Indiana block-coal, which at the costs named above would show $1.98 worth of fuel-oil to he equal to $2.15 worth of coal. The labor required to operate the rail-mill boilers for 24 hours, with coal as fuel,is: 26 stokers, 4 water-tenders, 6 ash-wheelers, 12 men unloading coal; total, 48 men. With oil as fuel, the same work requires 4 water-tenders and 6 men to attend to the burners; total, 10 men; a saving over coal of 38 men in 24 hours, which, at an average price of $2 per day, would be $76 per day. Borehole (slurry) mining, where a tool incorporating a water-jet cutter and a downhole slurry pump mines phosphate through a borehole, was field tested in northeastern Florida as part of a US Bureau of Mines program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals. About 1.5 kt (1700 st) of phosphate ore were mined at 23.6 t/h (26 stph) from a depth of 76 m (250 ft). The borehole was filled with water during mining for roof support and to assist slurry pumping. Underwater cutting was enhanced with an air-shrouded water jet. Mined cavities were backfilled to prevent subsidence after abandonment. Roof subsidence during mining was avoided only when the cavity was filled with water. Environmental monitoring before, during, and after mining included hydrological studies and measurements of water quality. Significant water quality changes occurred only in the zone being mined and were confined to the immediate area of the borehole.

No. 49 (13.72) was obtained by Eggertz's method. Nos. 50, 51 (13.10, 13.10) were dissolved and oxitfized as before, the iron precipitated by oxide of zinc, filtered and washed four times with cold water; and the manganese titered hot with permanganate. RESULTS of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station have been presented by the author in four papers. 1,2,3,4 In those papers references were given to the work of Haigh in 1917.5 The investigation at Annapolis included a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The experiments showed that even slight corrosion simultaneous with fatigue may cause failure at stresses far below the ordinary endurance limit. The experiments also showed that, for most metals, severe stressless corrosion prior to fatigue is much less damaging than even slight corrosion simultaneous with fatigue. The term "corrosion-fatigue" was restricted to mean the simultaneous action of corrosion and fatigue. The combined effect of corrosion followed by fatigue was called "prior-corrosion fatigue." A stress-cycle graph representing corrosion-fatigue is a curve approaching a horizontal asymptote, the ordinate of which may be called a "corrosion-fatigue limit." To avoid confusion in later discussion, the term "endurance limit" will be restricted to mean the fatigue limit obtained by tests in air with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and from corrosion. The endurance limit as thus obtained presumably represents an inherent property of the metal.

For every single BOF heat, the steelmaker must control the refining operation in order to satisfy at turndown the following conditions : - to reach the correct steel analysis (C, S, P, ...) in the shortest time possible, i.e. without reblow; - to maintain the temperature of the metal in a narrow range; - to produce the optimum steel weight. It is obvious that during refining limited time and scarce information are available and only very few corrective actions can be taken. For this reason, it is of the greatest importance to facilitate the control of the BOF process by taking adequate measures before and during charging of the converter. These are : - the availability of accurate and reliable equipments for the classical measurements, 5.e. weights, temperatures, flow-rates, analyses, etc... - the operation of an optimal charge calculation model which takes into account all information concerning the preceeding heats and the charged materials. '

REASONS FOR THIS CHAPTER Up to this point in the book the material presented has addressed the fundamental parameters associated with the evaluation of mining ventures and other investment alternatives. The procedures and techniques illustrated represent the basic approach to project evaluation, particularly when considering the normal engineering economic analysis of investment proposals. The evaluation procedure is complicated, however, when dealing specifically with mining-related investment proposals. These complicating factors are invariably directly related to the many special characteristics of the mining industry. Many of these special features such as tax policies, revenue and cost estimation, and ore reserves have been addressed in previous chapters. In addition to the many special features of mining which directly impact, in a quantitative manner, the various line items in the pro forma income statements of a cash flow analysis, other features of mining affect evaluation procedures in a more general manner. The main purpose of this chapter, then, is to provide an exposition of some of these more qualitative factors. We hope this will enable the reader to recognize these factors in mine evaluation practice and to make suitable adjustments in his or her analysis.

CREATION of a "committee on promotion of student interest in coal mining" has an encouraging implication for the coal industry. It is indicative that mining men, both in the field and in the educational centers, realize that the problems of the industry require the best talent available. Young men are being invited into coal on the premise that it needs them, that it offers opportunity for creative work and the realization of their objectives. In initiating a movement which purports to meet the objectives of any young man who spends four or five years of his life in college, the industry does so with a full realization of its obligations.

ORE.ID, a microcomputer program, rapidly searches a database of the principal properties for 573 ore minerals. Searches may be performed on any or all of the following properties: mean Vickers hardness, Talmage hardness, mean reflectance, strength of anisotropism, and colors and tints of the mineral and its internal reflections. Data from the International Mineralogical Association - Commission on Ore Microscopy data card file have been used when available. The program displays the number and type of data matches for each mineral found, displays their chemical components, and allows the range to be narrowed or widened for each of the identification properties for repeated searches, if desired. ORE.ID is much more rapid, allows for the use of more identification properties, and involves more ore minerals than any previous identification system.

INTRODUCTION. MINES are interesting by reason of what they have done for man, or of what has been done for them by nature. Not all are interesting on both scores. Many profitable mines are commonplace to the geologist; and many presenting unique geological conditions have been sad failures commercially. The Standard group at Bodie has produced in 25 years, $14,500,000, paying $5,000,000 in dividends.' On the other hand, this output has been mined (almost wholly above the 1,000-ft. level) from a system of more than 100 veins, ranging in thickness-from 0.5 in. of "specimen rock" to 30 ft. of clay and quartz; distributed through a zone about 2,000" ft. in width, and representing from three to five distinct periods of formation. This group, therefore, by reason of its industrial record as well as its geological features, may fairly be regarded as doubly interesting. The Bodie district occupies an island of recent (Tertiary) hornblende-andesite, surrounded by a complex of igneous rocks and breccias. It lies at the summit of the eastern foot-hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and within the Great Basin, a few miles from its western edge, marked here by Mono lake on the line of the Great Fault. The average elevation of the outcroppings of the veins may be taken at about 5,700 ft. The andesite projects from south to north in a great tongue, 12,000 ft. long and 5,000 ft. wide, reaching an extreme height at the northern end of perhaps 1,000 ft. above the adjoining small canyons. These separate it from the main mass of the foot-hill

AT the outset, said Mr. Guess, I may say that although I believe the present engineering courses in the various colleges and universities could be arranged to give the student within the same time limit a broader general education of un- doubted value, still I do not agree with the view held by many that engineers in comparison with those of other occupations-let us say doctors, lawyers, bankers, and so-called business men-seldom arrive at high executive positions. After all, we must remember that engineers are not very numerous as compared with the occupations just mentioned and therefore a lesser number reaching high executive positions stated numerically might be a larger number stated as a percentage. We all know there must be throughout the United States say three doctors to one engineer, but I don't think that even numerically there are as many doctors in high executive positions as engineers, and it is a fortunate thing for the country that doctors as a class are so busily engaged in alleviating sickness and suffering and in the advancement of medical science that they do not aim particularly for high executive positions.

The formation and subsequent decomposition of metastable phases in Ti-Ni alloys containing up to 11 pet (atomic) Ni have been studied. The decomposition of a completely retained ß phase and of a completely transformed 8 phase in a 6 pet alloy has been followed by X-ray diffraction and metallographic methods and by hardness determinations made during the process. The possible mechanisms of the reactions are discussed. PREVIOUS investigations of the Ti-Ni system have usually been limited to phase diagram studies; but little attention has been given to metastable phases and tempering processes. These are important, however, since equilibrium conditions are rarely achieved—nor, perhaps, are they desired—in practice. Up to the present time the available transformation data for titanium alloys appear to be restricted to isothermal transformation curves for selected binary and ternary systems. No quantitative studies have been made of the mechanism by which equilibrium is approached. Several independent investigations have been carried out to determine the Ti-Ni phase diagram. Early work by Wallbaum' and later by Long et al.' produced tentative phase diagrams which were not representative of true binary conditions, since the alloys were contaminated with oxygen and nitrogen. The most recent diagram (Fig. 1) is due to Margolin et al.," and a slight modification of the a + ß/ß boundary (shown dotted) has been proposed by McQuillan.' The structure of the phase Ti,Ni was shown by Duwez and Taylor" to be face-centered-cubic, with 96 atoms per structure cell. The formation of a martensitic ß phase (close-packed-hexagonal) in Ti-Ni alloys has generally been observed when specimens of low nickel content are rapidly cooled from the 0 (body-centered-cubic) range. Margolin et al. reported an increasing tendency for P to be retained in lump specimens as the nickel content increases. McQuillan' has studied the effect on the microstructure of delay time in quenching, and has reported the formation of pro- eutectoid a precipitate in a quenched hypoeutectoid alloy. In a previous study of Ti-Fe alloys," experiments were made on powder specimens produced by filing alloy ingots. Techniques were devised for the preparation and heat treatment of alloys, and X-ray diffraction methods were used both for structure determinations and phase ratio estimations. A similar approach has been made in this study of Ti-Ni alloys. THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publications of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photographs are used on such scales as 1/5000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are interpreted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been 3stablished at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.
