Mining is a risky business. The cost of exploring for new mineral deposits is high and the success rate of finding one worthy of development is relatively low. And once a deposit is identified, there is no guarantee that it will become a mine. Mining companies have to spend a lot of time and money on due diligence, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and sustainable development and environmental issues before deciding whether the deposit will become a profitable mine. And then there are the millions of dollars spent in developing the deposit and building a mine. No wonder the mining industry has trouble attracting investment capital. Companies take a large risk in developing reserves and investors take a similar risk in investing in them. So mining companies must be as accurate as possible in determining mineralization that makes it to reserve status. After all, reserves are a company’s most important asset and one of the critical factors analysts and funding sources look at when determining if a mine or mining company is worth the risk.

Longwall mining alters the fluid-flow-related reservoir properties of the rocks overlying and underlying an extracted panel due to fracturing and relaxation of the strata. These mining-related disturbances create new pressure depletion zones and new flow paths for gas migration and may cause unexpected or uncontrolled migration of gas into the underground workplace. One common technique to control methane emissions in longwall mines is to drill vertical gob gas vent holes into each longwall panel to capture the methane within the overlying fractured strata before it enters the work environment. Thus, it is important to optimize the well parameters, e.g., the borehole diameter, and the length and position of the slotted casing interval relative to the fractured gas-bearing zones. This paper presents the development and results of a comprehensive, "dynamic," three-dimensional reservoir model of a typical multipanel Pittsburgh coalbed longwall mine. The alteration of permeability fields in and above the panels as a result of the mining- induced disturbances has been estimated from mechanical modeling of the overlying rock mass. Model calibration was performed through history matching the gas production from gob gas ventholes in the study area. Results presented in this paper include a simulation of gas flow patterns from the gas-bearing zones in the overlying strata to the mine environment, as well as the influence of completion practices on optimizing gas production from gob gas ventholes.

This Bureau of Mines report presents operating practices and results of pressure maintenance and secondary recovery by water injection or by water injection supplemented by gas injection. Particular emphasis is placed on the results of water injection, which is the principal oil-recovery method employed in projects covered by this report. No attempt is made to study gas-injection projects or operations that are considered water-disposal projects. Also, this report does not include water-injection projects that have not been in operation long enough to evaluate results. Figure 1 is a map of north Louisiana showing the geographical locations of the projects included in this report. Most of the data used in this study were supplied by unit operators, operating companies, and the Louisiana Department of Conservation. Reservoir information and recovery data are generally those supplied by the operators, but include revisions where deemed necessary.

Over the last three decades, the mining industry has been moving towards underground mechanized mining methods and the number of load haul dump (LHD) vehicles utilized has increased. The growth of mechanization and automation has benefited both workers and mining companies. However, due to the design constraints with LHD vehicles and the limitations of the operating environment, restrictions to operator visibility has contributed to a number of accidents, including fatal injuries. Past researchers have used the light filament technique to collect obscuration zones around mobile equipment and have produced 2D visibility charts (shadow diagrams) of this information. The light filament method involves manually collecting visibility data, which results in errors and is time consuming, requiring around three hours to complete. This research utilizes a MENSI GS100 laser scanner along with 3D modelling software (3Dipsos) to collect and process operator visibility profiles for underground mobile equipment. Results from this test work indicate that a laser scanner can be successfully used to rapidly collect this data and utilize this information for improved mobile equipment design from a visibility perspective. It has been intimate and has involved exchange of personnel and. equipment as well as information. Correlation of divergent results obtained in large-scale tests of the explosibility3/ of coal dusts made in the respective countries was one of the first problems to be studied. The purpose of this paper is to show to what extent such correlation has been achieved. A series of small-scale tests was conducted to evaluate the effect of micro-fracture development, imposed by blasting, on the material properties of the rock as well as its resistance to crushing and grinding. The uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, Poisson’s ratio, Pwave, S-wave velocity, point load test index, crushing, and grinding work indices were evaluated for samples without any blasting load and for samples which had received a variety of blast loads ranging from a single impact with a lowstrength detonating cord to a combination of impacts at different times and significant impacts with powder factors close to those used in practical blasts. It was shown that the rock mechanics parameters change even at low impacts, suggesting easier crushing of the rock. Damage values appear to be affected by timing as stress wave superposition affects the damage process. Fragmentation is achieved at higher impact levels while work index modification of the fragments is also observed when high powder factors are used, suggesting improvements in grinding.

Computer simulations were carried out using calcium ferrite slags containing 25 wt% CaO, and the results compared with those obtained using fayalite slags. There was little difference in overall elimination of Pb and Bi, but elimination of Sb and As was much lower with calcium ferrite slag. When calcium ferrite slag is used only in the converting stage and fayalite slag in the smelting stage, as in the Mitsubishi process, the contents of Sb and As in the blister copper can be kept to reasonable levels. This allows advantage to be taken of the considerably higher iron oxide-holding capacity of calcium ferrite slag than of fayalite slag at the high oxygen potential under converting conditions, thus preventing precipitation of magnetite. In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a hand-held instrument that uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture. This instrument is called the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM). In this study, NIOSH personnel accompanied Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors on their routine band surveys in five and three underground coal mines in MSHA District 2 (PA) and District 11 (AL), respectively. While underground, NIOSH personnel and MSHA inspectors used the CDEM to assess the explosibilities of the dust samples. The values of percent incombustible content (% IC) determined by the CDEM agreed well with those obtained later by low temperature ashing (LTA) in both MSHA and NIOSH laboratories. Further, the meter identified some samples as potentially explosible that LTA analysis had found to possess sufficient rock dust for inerting. The CDEM provides more information on the hazards in the mine. Rapid identification of areas with explosible dust mixtures using the CDEM allows for immediate intervention rather than a wait of several weeks for laboratory analysis.

Electrostatic separation has been a mainstay of minerals sands flowsheets for over 50 years. Recent electrostatic developments have shown better conductor/non-conductor separation than technology previously available. Results to date show significantly increased separation efficiency over prior-art high-tension roll electrostatic separator (HTR). These improvements allow greater simplification of MSP circuits by minimizing re-circulating loads. The distinct features of the eForce include: 1) A provision that minimizes the affects of particle size to improve separator performance, 2) an enhancement of the design and arrangement of the static electrode providing a greater attraction force for separating fine conductive particles, and 3) inner roll and outer plate electrode configuration to improve separation efficiency and throughput capacity. The carcinogenic potential of chromium (VI) has been the subject of numerous environmental and occupational studies, from which many regulatory efforts emanated. Besides the regulation of levels of known toxic substances (e.g. Cr (VI)), the classification of dusts for regulatory purposes has thus far depended on broad definitions of particle size, mainly used to distinguish only between inhalable and respirable particles. In the past, ultrafine particles (less than 0.1 µm diameter) (PM0.1) were often regarded as a non-issue, because it was believed that significant doses would not deposit in the lungs. A growing body of scientific data is indicating that ultrafine particles are more toxic than their coarse counterparts. Increased toxicity can be related to the unique dosimetric aspects of the deposition and disposition of inhaled ultrafine particles. Secondly, ultrafine particles have a larger surface area per given mass. The increased surface area can act as a carrier for co-pollutants, specifically transition metals (including chromium) that could form a coat on the particle surfaces during particle formation. This suggests that the presence of ?inert? ultrafine particles in the environment may enhance the potential for exposure to reactive airborne compounds, including Cr (VI). These factors are particularly important when information on occupational epidemiology is interpreted. It is desirable to consider the particle size distribution, for example when occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium compounds is assessed. Since ultrafine particles are more toxic than coarse particles with the same chemical composition, it could be speculated that cancer slope factors might be related to particle size distribution. This is relevant not only to carcinogenic chromium compounds, but also basically for any particle-associated toxicants. In general, the probability of developing health effects associated with occupational toxicants is likely to be higher when these are associated with the ultrafine particle range.

Since 2007, a number of Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC) Applications have been implemented on SAG mills, among others, within the Kairos Mining Concentrator Automation Program using ?Profit Controller?? and other tools comprising the ?Profit Suite??. Along this journey, several interesting and challenging issues related to SAG mill operation and control have been faced, which are relevant to be shared with the Mineral Processing community. These advanced control applications have an operational objective whose goal is to increase marginal profit on the concentrator, together with increasing mill stability. In regard to this objective, the issues to be presented and described are in direct relationship with ?Profit Controller? features and the SAG role; they are also stated and linked to get the most of the mill. Some conclusions and findings are also presented, leading to recommended practices on how to use the controller. These findings have also lead us to decide further actions to be taken on new applications to deploy and also on devising and implementing some complementary components to increase robustness of the overall automation solution, as well as reducing the need for operator intervention.

Mexico’s role in the world economic community continues to grow. And it is important that the country makes use of its natural wealth, including its large underground deposits of minerals and metals. With that in mind, Industrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V.(Peñoles), a mining, smelting and refining company, began mining lead, zinc and other metals from the Francisco I. Madero Project (FIM). The mine is located about 600 km (370 miles) northwest of Mexico City in the state of Zacatecas. Peñoles plans to remove about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of ore from FIM. To achieve this goal, the company needs to optimize its processing, to maximize the amount of metal it extracts through FIM’s large flotation lead-zinc concentrator. To ensure high productivity, Peñoles and its contract engineering firm, M3 Engineering and Technology, of Tucson, AZ, have implemented anore processing system.

The Kwyjibo deposit is an iron oxide Cu-REE-F-Mo-Au mineralization of Mesoproterozoic age located in the Grenville Province approximately 120 km NE of Sept-Îles, Quebec (Figure 1). Occurring along the SE margin of the Canatiche granitic complex, the deposit is composed of several polymetallic showings that are related to different textural facies of magnetite. The mineralization process at Kwyjibo is complex, and is divided into Early Granitophile, Magnetite, Main Polymetallic and Specular Hematite stages (Cayer et al., submitted for publication). The Main Polymetallic stage, comprising chalcopyrite, pyrite, fluorite, molybdenite and REE-bearing minerals, is superimposed on pre-existing magnetiterich rocks. Discovered by SOQUEM Inc. in 1993, the Kwyjibo deposit shares many characteristics with other hydrothermal polymetallic iron oxide deposits around the world. Foose and McLelland (1995) suggested that this class of mineralization could occur in the Grenville Province. However, only a few polymetallic occurrences are known to be associated with low-Ti iron oxide deposits in the Grenville. Kwyjibo is one of the most significant examples of a polymetallic iron oxide deposit to have been found in the Grenville Province to-date.

During the dissolution of gold in fully aerated cyanide solutions the CN ion is the active agent, and consequently the usual method of evaluating the dissolving power of such solutions is to determine the CN- concentration analytically. The presence in the solutions of copper and/or zinc which themselves form complex cyanides, may result in erroneous conclusions as to the free cyanide ion concentration determined by titration.In this paper the theory of titration of such solutions has been developed, and potentiometric methods have been used to follow the behaviour of complex cyanides of copper and zinc. The results for cuprocyanides show Cu (CN)s to be the most important copper complex, and in addition they explain the reported low rates of solution of gold in copperbearing solutions which when titrated in the usual way, appear to have adequate free cyanide. An explanation of the misleading value of the titration is given, and suggestions for recognition of the condition are offered. Preliminary results for zinc-bearing solutions show that there is no satisfactory end-point for the titration of CN- in excess of that in the complex Zn (CN) 4=, which dissociates to CN and Zn(CN)g-.

The combination of two top levels of cross-lot braces designed and installed to act as a truss, and vertical post-tensioning of the panels allow the unbraced excavation of a 36' span. Philosophy of Excavation Support System The excavation of interest is for the cut-and-cover box sections of the southern approach to the Third Harbor Tunnel, which is part of the Central Artery/Tunnel project in Boston, Massachusetts. The 60' deep excavation is located very close to an existing building which is supported by piles, as shown in Figure 1. Therefore, it was necessary to minimize ground movement which may damage the building.

"Stringent environmental performance criteria and regulations, and the desire to minimize water use have made membrane-based treatment and separation processes an attractive option. This has lead to many advances in all aspects of the technology. Membrane separation processes have found application in sea water desalination, brackish water treatment, decontamination of ground water, and wastewater treatment. Development of membranes with better resistance to harsh feed conditions has created new opportunities for the broader application of membrane separation technologies to mineral processing streams. There are examples in mineral processing operations, including treatment of acidic drainage, pre-concentration of pregnant leaching solution in heap leaching operations, separation of acids and metals from waste streams and intermediate process streams, as well as gold and cyanide recovery from a heap leaching operation. This paper provides a brief overview of membrane technology principles, followed by a discussion of current membrane technology applications relevant to the mining and mineral processing industry. The paper further explores the potential for the application of membrane separation as an integrated component in mineral processing operations.INTRODUCTION Increased regulatory pressures, emphasis on water conservation, and scarcity of water in arid regions have resulted in substantial changes in industrial practices in recent years. As a result, many industries have become more open to adopting innovative technologies such as membrane separation. The mining industry, which is typically very conservative, has adopted membrane separation as an effective end-of-pipe solution for effluent and acidic drainage (AD) treatment; however, its use as an integrated component in plant operations has progressed more slowly. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations coupled with the desire for low- and zero-discharge operations, the use of membrane separation technology for achieving acceptable environmental performance may be unavoidable in the future. The relatively small footprint requirement, versatility, and modular construction of membrane separation units facilitate their introduction into existing processes with a suitable feed stream. Membrane separation is not a stand-alone process that provides the ultimate solution to water and wastewater treatment; however, it can often be economically added to conventional waste treatment plants to increase throughput and/or decrease contaminant output (Mortazavi, 2008). Although membrane separation technology has become an established separation technique that is widely used in drinking water production and other industries, it is still considered an emerging technology within the mining and mineral processing industry. This technology offers many potential benefits such as clean water recovery from wastewater, significant reduction of volume requiring conventional treatment, decreased usage of reagents, and acid recovery, all of which lead to increased treatment efficiencies and lower reagent consumption. This could translate to smaller and more efficient plants with lower capital and operating costs and lower environmental impacts. Plant expansion may be facilitated by incorporating a membrane separation unit operation in order to utilize existing treatment systems at higher throughputs."

The melting phenomena of manganese ore, slag and alloys were studied in an experimental sessile drop furnace. Particles of approximately 20-60mg were placed on graphite substrates and then heated at a constant rate of 5°C/min up to 1830°C in a controlled gas atmosphere of Ar or CO. The shape of the particle was photographed with a digital video camera every second. It was observed that the melting behaviour can vary significantly, with some particles exhibiting a large softening/melting range. Selected samples were sectioned and then analysed with EPMA. The implications of the results on understanding industrial furnace operations are discussed.

In 2017, Nicholson Construction Company completed a $72.1 million design-build contract for Miami Dade Water and Sewer Department to replace an existing 54-inch diameter pre-stressed concrete force main that runs from the Virginia Key Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant, under the Biscayne Bay at Norris Cut, to Fisher Island. In order to install the new sewer pipe below the bottom of Biscayne Bay, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) was launched from a 42ft diameter and 89ft deep shaft on Virginia Key and a precast segmentally lined tunnel was constructed towards a 28ft diameter and 72ft deep retrieval shaft on Fisher Island. Both shafts were constructed through sand and highly permeable limestone, primarily the Fort Thompson Formation which is part of one of the most permeable aquifers in the United States and two different techniques were used to ensure a water-tight shaft at each end of the tunnel drive. The launch shaft structure was built using the secant pile technique, wet excavation and a tremie plug. For the tunnel break-in a soil freeze block was installed after the ground was treated with low mobility grout. The retrieval shaft was built using the Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) technique and excavated in the dry. Precedence of any other structure built this deep through hard layers (UCS over 3,000 psi) using this technique was not found. This case study addresses the challenges of constructing watertight underground structures in highly porous ground for launching and retrieving a TBM. Design challenges from complex asymmetric loading, selection and comparison of the construction techniques, the installation and excavation of both shafts, and their performance are also discussed herein.

A year after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and replaced President Amin with their choice, President Karmal, Afghanistan remained in turmoil. In some respects, the political and economic situation in Afghanistan was no better by the end of 1980 than it was preceding the December 1979 invasion. The Government faced widespread and growing alienation and resistance, virulent factionalism within the ruling party, and an acute shortage of material. The mining sector of the country did not fare better either; the only raw material produced in a significant amount was natural gas, which was exported mainly to the Soviet Union. No statistics on production of other minerals and materials were available by yearend. Most of Afghanistan's gas production was from the Hodja-Gugerdag Field, southeast of Shibarghan. The gas flow from this field had been about 300 million cubic feet per day since 1961. An estimated 230 to 250 million cubic feet per day of Hodja-Gugerdag's production was moved by pipeline across the Amu-Darya River into the Soviet Union. Most of the remainder was transmitted eastward to a 105,000-ton-per-year fertilizer plant and an electric power station built near Mazar-i-Sharif with Soviet assistance. After the Soviet invasion, the second gasfield, Djar-Kuduk, in the Shibarghan area, was brought under production. This field, which will produce about 200 million cubic feet per day, consists of four gas zones in the Jurassic and lower Cretaceous zones between 3,000 and 8.500 feet deep. The gas has a high hydrogen sulfide content, with considerable carbon dioxide, A new treatment plant was built at Djar-Kuduk by Soviet technicians under a turnkey contract at the end of 1980. It is believed that most of the Djar-Kuduk's initial flow will be sent to the Soviet Union.
