Rich Hill, also known as Weaver District No. 2, is among the most productive placer gold locations in Arizona. Located near Congress, AZ (Fig. 1), this district hosted major placer rushes in the 1860s and1930s. Those rushes were followed by an electronic metal detecting rush that started in the 1980s and continues today. Thousands of ounces of gold have been produced by these modern amateur and professional metal detectorists. Many of them see more gold in an afternoon than Nevada mine workers will ever see outside of the mill. Rich Hill discovery Inspired northeastward by Spanish legends, a party of 10 men left Yuma, AZ on April 1, 1863. Included in the group were Pauline Weaver (Fig. 2), Henry Wickenburg and Abraham Peeples. Wickenburg left the group near the Hassayampa River and discovered the Vulture deposit. The rest of the group arrived at the base of Rich Hill in late May. While drying antelope meat on the first day, a few of the men prospected a nearby creek bed and immediately found gold. In a couple of hours they picked up more than 2.8 kg (90 oz) of gold. The next day, four members of the party went searching for their horses and returned with news that a nearby hilltop was literally graveled with nuggets.

Rehabilitation of mined out areas is often enforced by environmental bonding. It is usually assumed that this process provides financial assurance that rehabilitation will be carried out as agreed at the permitting stage. Shortcomings of the current practice in environmental bonding for mining are reviewed. Of particular importance for the public, for governments and for the environment is the absence of protection against cost overruns and companies defaulting before the bond amount is entirely paid. Elements of solution are identified through the emergence of environmental insurance as a complement to bonding for cost overruns and defaults. A cover of environmental catastrophes could also be added, hence reducing the risk for the public and the environment. We examine the merit of creating a captive insurance company under the responsibility of the mining industry. The use of insurance techniques would incorporate a genuine risk management dimension to the financing of rehabilitation.

Injury experience at coal mines and mechanical-cleaning plants (excluding officeworkers ) in 1967 was 222 fatal and 10,115 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an exposure time of 241.8 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 42-75 per million man-hours worked; the severity rate was 7,699 days lost or charged per million man-hours. Each of these general measures of injury experience was lower than similar data recorded for 1966. Employment at 6,885 coal mines and 569 mechanical-cleaning plants, excluding officeworkers, averaged 139,312 men in 1967. The average number of days worked was 220. Coal production totaled 560.8 million short tons, at rates of 2.32 tons per man-hour and 18.32 tons per man-day. A total of 2,779 onsite officeworkers at coal mines and mechanical- cleaning plants worked 5.2 million man-hours in 1967 without a disabling work injury.

"Abstract The economic and safe design of deep foundation systems in difficult soil conditions is based on a reduction of construction material used, construction time spent, energy consumed and a high-level modelling of the soil-structure-interaction. The special foundation system Combined Pile- Raft Foundation (CPRF), in-situ load tests on the construction site and a sufficient soil investigation allow cost optimised constructions. In any case at challenging projects the observational method has to be applied for verification and quality control of the design. Regarding the 4-Eye-Principle as basis of the quality control management an independent peer review of the planning, design and construction phases is the guarantee for safety, serviceability and optimisation of all projects. Main execution standards for the construction of deep foundations based on the Eurocode 7 are summarised and discussed. The paper presents the basics of the safe and qualified design and construction of foundation systems including quality assurance. During the last two decades many research projects were conducted to study the load requirements for the powered supported longwall faces (1-6). Significant results had been achieved by these researches. Most of the previous studies were rarely designed to understand the mechanisms of interaction between the supports and the surrounding rock, or to correlate the stress conditions around longwall faces to the mining operations both in time and space. In case of the shield supported faces, the roof-to-floor convergence is very difficult to measure due to the high percentage of roof coverage. The external load on the supports can not be determined from the leg pressure data alone due to the existence of the lemniscate links. Therefore, there is a real need in that a simple engineering method be developed to monitor the variations of roof load on the shield supports, the roof-to-floor convergence and the roof stress restoration in the gob area as the mining proceeds. Only with the results of these measurements, a further understanding about the mechanisms of interaction between the supports and the surrounding rock can be achieved and a criterion of designing or selecting the optimum mechanical parameters of the shield supports can finally be developed.

The Eskay Creek Mine, a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia started operations in late 1994. For the first three years of operation, ore was crushed to minus 2 inch; blended to satisfy smelter terms and direct shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Before commencing the above operations, preliminary evaluations had indicated that an extremely complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. Subsequently markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations, at a nominal production rate of 300 tonnes per day, were commenced. Exploration diamond drilling in 1995 and 1996 discovered additional lower grade mineralised zones, which are less economic or uneconomic as direct shipping ore. Test work demonstrated that these lower grade zones could be upgraded to marketable concentrates in a simple flotation mill. The mill was built in 1997 and has been in operation since late 1997. The mining rate now has increased to 400 tonnes per day including 250 tonnes per day of the direct shipping ore and 150tonnes per day of the mill ore. Prime Resources Group Inc. wholly owns the Eskay Creek Mine. Homestake Canada Inc. owns 50.6% of Prime’s shares and manages and operates the mine on Prime’s behalf. This paper discusses the mining and milling operations as well as ore shipment and smelter contracts' administration.

Borehole mining (BHM) is a remotely operated method of extracting rock material through boreholes by high-pressure water jets. Figure 1 illustrates a BHM tool and fluids circulation. The tool consists of at least two pipes, one for pumping down high-pressure water, the second for delivering slurry to the surface. This article reviews the BHM process. It discusses current and new applications for borehole mining and help the readers determine if BHM is applicable in their situations. Previous articles in ME about BHM explained either a particular project (ME, April 2001, pp. 33-36) or a newest patent in this area (ME, March 1991, pp. 313-318). However, neither one provided an overview on the modern BHM technology.

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated. After the Sago and Darby No. 1 mine incidents, the new regulatory standards for the design of mine seals in underground coal mines of the United States require the mine seals to withstand higher explosion standards. This necessitated for the development of new design approaches and standards. For development of any new design standards or approaches a detailed understanding of effect of key influencing parameters on the stability of mine seal is a must. This paper attempts to address one of the factors, i.e. roof convergence, that play an important role in the stability of mine seal under explosion loading. Initially a couple of three dimensional numerical models were built and tested for different levels of roof convergence. These models confirmed that roof convergence has great influence on seal stability. A detailed study is undertaken, with some simple assumptions, to establish typical influence of roof convergence on the stability of mine seal under different levels of static explosion pressures. Three dimensional distinct element code 3DEC is used for this purpose.

WHEN THE BUREAU OF MINES was created in 1910, the organic act had as one of its main provisions the following: That it shall be the province of said bureau and its director, under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior, to make diligent investigation of the methods of mining, especially in relation to the safely of miners and the appliances best adapted to prevent accidents, the possible improvement of renditions under which mining operations are carried on, the treatment of ores and other mineral substances, the use of explosives and electricity, the prevention of accidents, and other inquiries and technologic investigations pertinent to said industries, and from tinge to time make such public reports of the work, investigations, and information obtained as the Secretary of said department may direct, with the recommendations of such bureau. The nationwide nature of the health and safety work of the Bureau of Mines has given its representatives an opportunity to study and report on matters pertaining to health and safety in mines and related operations from the time the Bureau was established to the present. Regular annual reports and numerous additional papers and reports have been published each year to place on record and to make available the information gathered. While the basic purpose of this bulletin is to describe health and safety reports for the period January 1947 through June 1955, a selected number of earlier publica¬tions that are believed pertinent for reference purposes are included.

Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

This paper discusses the impacts that advances in metallurgy and process engineering have on minerals project execution. Ausenco's business is focused on integrating minerals processing technology and the delivery of cost effective processing plants that exceed client performance expectations. The metallurgical development is a small but critical part of this process. Metallurgical development and innovation outcomes need to be transformed into an engineered solution and that solution converted into an operating plant in a cost conscious and competitive environment. Including new or innovative processes in a project flow sheet increases a project's technical and commercial risk. However, it also gives the project, and/or the engineering company, a potential advantage over projects using mainline practices. Managing the balance between risk and opportunity has been a cornerstone of Ausenco's success in recent years. Some advances in "technology" that are discussed in the paper include: larger capacity equipment new flow sheet concepts simplification of process interfaces, and more effective project strategies The common theme is that having a new idea can be the easy bit, putting it into operation effectively involves numerous people, many interfaces and strong project management.

This paper characterizes the copper cycle, that is, the flows of copper entering and leaving the African economy over a one-year period (1994). The major flows over the entire life-cycle of copper are examined; these include production (mining, milling and refining), fabrication of semi-products and manufacturing of finished products, use, and the waste management system. The results reveal that substantial amounts of copper (of order705 Gg/yr) are mined in Africa; of that amount, about 70 per cent is exported following processing, 18 per cent is utilized by African fabricators, and 12 per cent is discarded. The flows of copper products from African fabricators and product imports from other continents exceed product discards by large amounts. This difference, about 0.25 kg Cu/capita/yr on average, is added to in-use stock, largely as wire, plumbing tube, and in electronics. Some 65 per cent of the copper in discard flows is contained in electrical and electronic products, where it is relatively easy to collect and process for reuse. About a third of the copper discard flows known is recycled. The actual percentage is almost certainly higher because of informal (and unrecorded) recycling. Much of the remaining discarded copper is diluted into the municipal waste stream, where recovery and recycling are probably not economically justified. Abstract - Intrusive features of cupriferous noritoids from the deeply eroded Proterozoic granite-gneiss terrane of the Okiep Copper District in South Africa illustrate the emplacement of basic magmas into a mid- to lower-crustal environment. The small, easterly trending intermediate to basic intrusions of the so-called Koperberg Suite display a wide variety of geometries, occurrence and emplacement modes, including dike-, sill- and plug-like bodies. Coeval granulite-facies metamorphism, partial melting and ductile deformation of country rock gneisses during intrusion of the basic magmas led to emplacement and dilation processes of the intrusions which differ significantly from those described for dikes and sills at shallow crustal levels. Regional tectonic stresses are largely negligible due to very low differential stress (?1 - ?3) during deformation and intrusion, which permits emplacement at high angles to the principal compressive stress and which follows favorably inclined structural anisotropies. Dilation of the basic intrusions is largely determined by compositional differences of host rocks and occurs by thermal erosion, i.e., assimilation of wall rock gneisses. Low length-to-width ratios of basic to ultrabasic dikes and predominantly diaper -like outlines of mesocratic bodies are indicative of low viscosity contrasts between the mafic magmas and high-grade metamorphic host-rock gneisses. Buoyancy-controlled ascent of the basic to intermediate intrusions is expressed by a broad compositional zoning of basic bodies with respect to the granite-gneiss stratigraphy. Various intrusion modes within the stratigraphic column of the granite-gneiss sequence reflect a lithological and structural stratification of the seemingly homogeneous granite-gneiss terrane.

Despite the current economic downturn that is now decimating iron ore production, Minnesota?s mining operators remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for the industry. Reflecting this optimism, the development of several new mining projects continues in the state. The future of mining in Minnesota was the featured topic at the combined 82nd Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 70th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium. More than 500 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and equipment suppliers from the around the world, attended the meeting, which was held April 14 and 15, 2009, in Duluth, MN. The combined meeting featured a keynote session with three distinguished speakers plus a panel discussion by representatives from several of Minnesota?s taconite producers. The keynote speakers were Curtis Clark, president and chief operating officer, Behr Dolbear, who gave a presentation on the ?State of the Mining Industry.? Phil Newman, chief operating officer, CRU Strategies, spoke about challenges facing the mining industry and James A. Skurla, acting director, Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Labovitz School of Business and Economics, University of Minnesota Duluth, discussed the importance of mining to northeastern Minnesota?s economy. The taconite producers panel discussion included Jonathan Holmes, vice president and operations manager, ArcelorMittal; Ed Latendresse, vice president and general manger, Hibbing Taconite; John Tuomi, vice president operations services, United Taconite and Mike Mliner, vice president and general manager, Northshore Mining. The mangers provided updates on their respective operation The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions on mining, processing, environmental and nonferrous mining. The sessions included technical papers that provided information on the status of a number of new mining projects in the state. The conference also offered a SME short course titled ?The basics of iron mining.? A tradeshow that featured about 100 companies and organizations offering products and services to Minnesota?s mining industry ran in conjunction to the conference. It was estimated that more than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, attended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years. The Minnesota Section of SME also held its annual business meeting during the conference.

The year 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the research efforts by the U.S. government to improve the health and safety of miners working in the United States. This research began in 1910 with the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (the Bureau) and it has continued during the past 10 decades, even after the closure of the Bureau in 1996. The research on safer mining technology, formerly done by the Bureau, has now been combined with National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies of miners? health to form a unified federal research program to improve the health and safety of miners. This article describes this research and places some of the accomplishments into perspective with other activities in the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Time Line (insert).

Seismic tomography, as used in mining, is based on the principle that highly stressed rock will demonstrate relatively higher P-wave velocities than rock under less stress. A decrease or increase in stress over time can be verified by comparing successive tomograms. Personnel at the Spokane Research Center have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to identify stress in remnant ore pillars in deep (greater than 1220 m) underground mines. In this process, three-dimensional seismic surveys are conducted in a pillar between mine levels. A sledgehammer is used to generate P-waves, which are recorded by geophones connected to a stacking signal seismograph capable of collecting and storing the P-wave data. Travel times are input into a spreadsheet, and apparent velocities are then generated and merged into imaging software. Mine workings are superimposed over apparent P-wave velocity contours to generate a final tomographic image. Results of a seismic tomographic survey at the Sunshine Mine, Kellogg, ID, indicate that low- velocity areas (low stress) are associated with mine workings and high-velocity areas (higher stress) are associated with areas where no mining has taken place. A high stress gradient was identified in an area where ground failed. From this tomographic survey, as well as four earlier surveys at other deep underground mines, a method was developed to identify relative stress in remnant ore pillars. This information is useful in making decisions about miner safety when mining such ore pillars.

Results obtained from small scale tests using Australian tin concentrates indicate that metallic tin containing less than 0·1 per cent iron can be recovered by a two-stage process using hydrogen and make-up chlorine. In the first stage the concentrate is ground,. pelletized, roasted, and reacted at 650°C with HCI and H2 to volatilize the tin as SnOI2. The volatilization reaction is conducted with cocurrent gas and solids flow because it was found that the use of cocurrent flow yielded a solids residue substantially free from FeCI2. The second stage uses a technique termed "reflux reduction" during which the SnOl2 produced by volatilization is reduced by hydrogen to form tin and a gas containing HCI and H2 of sufficiently high HCI tenor for recycle to the volatilization stage. The elimination of tin ranged from 98+ to 99·7+ per cent of the tin from concentrates containing 5 to 50 per cent tin, respectively. The process should be capable of continuous operation, and a tentative calculation has shown ,that a treatment rate of 12,000 tonnes of tin concentrate per year could be obtained in a volatilization reactor 1·1 m in diameter and 6·1 m high. The process may have particular application to finely divided concentrates containing less than 20 per cent tin.

This paper describes a research project that focuses on developing a diagnostic routine to assist in decision support for the condition based maintenance of mobile mining equipment subject to unsteady duty. The objective is to develop a general method for initial identification of mechanical faults in machinery operating under non-steady state conditions. The platform to be used for the experimental development and validation of the system is the swing machinery in an electric mining shovel operating in an open pit mining environment. The strategic approach that is proposed for the diagnostic routine will involve using novelty detection augmented by temporal classification.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent.
