Traditional cycle theory would postulate that if you have a supply shortage relative to demand, the price will increase because buyers will incrementally increase the price they are willing to pay to ensure that their needs are fulfilled. As prices rise, more supply will be brought on and will eventually exceed demand. This supply excess will cause the price to decline as producers have to lower their prices to sell their goods. What is interesting is that cycles are simply volatility over time. Without the time factor, volatility simply goes up and down. When we add the time element, a cycle is created. This cycle can be big or small. In mining?s case, we are talking about a Super Cycle ? a big cycle. But a Su-per Cycle can be formed in two ways. It can form by either increasing the wavelength or the volatility. If these two elements are combined, a Super Cycle is formed. It is bigger than the normal cycle in terms of time duration and extent of volatility. A recent study (Fig. 1) conducted by Cuddington and Jarrett showed an interesting proof of Super Cycles and suggests that these cycles last between 15 and 30 years. So, what causes a Su-per Cycle? Is it a convergence of unrelated events or a consequence of related events? In a global community everything is related. Equilibrium theory would also take the position that a Super Cycle is a consequence of events.

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted at Mintek for the production of titanium powder from particulate Kroll sponge by the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) process. The aim of this work was to produce titanium powder for powder metallurgical consolidations. The work involved the production of titanium powder at optimized conditions, which included hydrogenation in a horizontal tube furnace at 600°C for 2 hours, milling using planetary and roller mills, and dehydrogenation in a vacuumed retort fitted in a muffle furnace running at 700°C for 36 hours. The titanium powder produced in this project matched the elemental specifications of commercially available titanium powder, except for high carbon content. Nevertheless, the powder has been tested further in mechanical alloying and has been found suitable for the production of powder metallurgical compacts. The process of electrostatic separation was developed in the late 19th century, but did not make much headway for about 25 years. High dc voltages, of the order of 20 kilovolts, are involved, and the only means of obtaining such voltages at that time were by the use of frictional machines, such as the Wimshurst. These were not reliable, for two reasons:-a. If a spark discharge occurred it took an appreciable time before a steady voltage was again attained.b. In damp weather the machines were almost useless.In the first 20 years of the 20th century the advent of mechanical and vacuum-tube rectifiers led to promising developments of 'the process. In the early 1920's flotation became widely used commercially, and proved to be more reliable, and capable of wider application, than electrostatic separation. During the last 15 years or so, with a better knowledge of the fundamentals forming the basis of the process, electrostatic separation is beginning to compete with flotation, especially in the treatment of smallsizedgranular material, such as beach sands. Electrostatic separation can be, and is, widely used in many cases where flotation is impossible, such as in the cleaning of food products which must be kept dry.

This paper briefly describes the excavation procedure of a powerhouse, comprising of its incremental excavation, reinforcement measures, and the installed monitoring system. During the first phase of excavation, the data obtained from monitoring of the behavior of Mudstone layers were used to recommend extra support measures. These data are also used to design the support of the powerhouse during its extension phase. The metallurgical heart of the majority of copper oxide processes is the heap leaching operation. Fresh low grade sulfide ores is a far greater challenge.The success of this unit operation is so important that operators need to understand the ramifications of their decisions or non-decisions and how they could affect the downstream processing. Heap leaching is an operation that can be described as a scientific art whereby principles of science can be used to guide experienced personnel in attaining their goals. Recent advances have been made based on better understanding the ore characteristics. The success of a heap leach operation, or otherwise, is dependent upon a number of factors, notably: The type of ore to be treated The extent of testwork completed to define the process The interpretation of the testwork results Ore preparation prior to stacking Agglomeration and curing requirements Other issues are: Compliance with the ’smaller’ requirements of environmental authorities Adequate and timely drainage of solution from the base of a leaching lift The degree of saturation in the pads Heap porosity – coarser or finer ore, which is better? Higher or lower irrigation rates – which would produce a better result? Laying out irrigation pipework for ease of operation and maintenance The addition of water, raffinate during agglomeration where needed The heap leaching of sulfide ores, including chalcopyrite, via enhanced bacterial leaching is discussed. INTRODUCTION Over the last twenty years, production of extremely pure copper from solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) has become more common in a market of real declining prices for copper metal. This paper touches on a number of heap leach operations and experiences. These projects were subjected to extensive engineering design and resulted in low capital cost, efficient operations with a number of lessons learned. The key to these operations was the performance of the heaps and associated fluid collection systems rather than the plants themselves.

Experiments have been made in a laboratory heavy media separator at various specific gravities of separation using zinc chloride solution and magnetite suspension as media for different types of coals. The results indicate that the magnetite bath gives at better separation than zinc chloride solution. Even though the probable error remains the same for most conditions of operation, the error area is found to have a wide variation which emphasises the importance of the error area over probable error in evaluating the performance of a cleaning unit.

One would be hard pressed to find another project as complex as this one given its configuration, the variety of issues to address and the required construction techniques. Contract C710 is currently under construction as part of Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail, connecting downtown Seattle with Sea-Tac Airport. The paper describes the construction-to-date of the deep mined station under Beacon Hill using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This deep “binocular” station is being mined through some of the most challenging soft ground conditions in the USA. The excavated volume of the station is approximately 60,000 cy (46,000 m3) and the station comprises a variety of geometries and cross sections ranging from 235 sf (22 m2) up to 1,670 sf (155 m2). This underground complex includes platform, concourse, cross-passage and emergency ventilation tunnels together with station egress and ventilation shafts. Various excavation sequences are in use for the different tunnels including the twin-sidewall drifts for the impressive45 ft (13.7 m) wide by 42 ft ( 12.8 m) high concourse cross adits. This station has two train platforms approximately 165 feet (50m) below the surface. This station, constructed in highly variable glacial deposits including water bearing sands and silts approximately 50 ft below multiple perched water tables in an urban setting, creates a very unique and challenging situation. The corrosion behaviour of a high-quality rebonded magnesia-chromite refractory in contact with a vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) slag with high Al2O3content (15?20 mass per cent) is investigated under VOD process conditions by rotating finger tests in a vacuum induction furnace. The refractory degradation mechanisms are studied by the characterization of corroded microstructures using scanning electron microscopy, equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. A number of mineral deposits occur in close proximity to the Pacific plate fronts. Among these deposits are gold-silver and the base metal sulphide deposits of copper, zinc and lead. Gold deposits that commonly occur in these areas are of hydrothermal origin. Of these the epithermal deposits have attracted the attention of the exploration geologists as well as the metallurgists. One vital aspect of the activity of the geologists is the development of models for epithermal gold mineralisation in the Pacific Rim. These models can also be used by metallurgists for predicting gold extraction processes. This paper reviews the mineralogy, fineness and the host minerals of gold and examines the data in the light of gold mineralisation in the southwest Pacific Rim. The gold mineralisation models proposed for the Pacific Rim have been used to predict gold extraction processes suitable for the various mineralisation types. Discussed also are the mineralisation and treatment processes of some selected epithermal gold deposits and gold-rich porphyry copper deposits in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji and New Zealand.

Planning of New York’s new subway line dictated the location of shallow underground station caverns and track crossovers. Clear span openings ranging from70 feet to 100 feet and lengths in excess of 1000 feet, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 25 feet to 40 feet required judicious selection of construction methods, equipment, and proper sequencing of the excavation stages. Rock classifications alone could not predict the behavior of the rock mass during construction. A robust design procedure that considered most of the important aspects of rock behavior and elements of shallow tunnel design, minimized the negative impacts of variable geotechnical data. This paper describes the intricacies of the planning and design of the $16 billion Second Avenue Subway with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. Lorsque l’on applique la technologie utilisant du métabisulfite (MBS) de sodium comme agent déprimant de la pyrite, le procédé se fait à un pH de 6,5 à 7,5, gamme dans laquelle la récupération de Mo est supérieure au procédé habituel utilisant un pH de 11,0 à 12,0 lorsque l’on applique de la chaux. A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22-m (4-ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that SMCRA sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. There has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analyses indicate that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope.

Recent advances in X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology have made it possible to conduct powder XRD measurements on samples at high temperatures during reaction. State-of-the-art detectors are now capable of rapidly acquiring diffraction patterns across a wide angular range (typically 120"20) enabling phase transformation rates to be measured directly during sample reaction. In this study, the phase transformations during the reduction of hematite to metallic iron by five per cent hydro ºen in nitrogen gas mixtures, were measured in situ between 500 - 700 C. Complete X-ray diffraction patterns were acquired within 15 seconds every one minute, enabling direct measurement of the transient phase abundances during the reaction. The data were quantitatively analysed by the Rietveld method to yield the abundances of hematite, magnetite, wustite and metallic iron, as functions of time during the reduction process. A first-order reactions-in-series model was proposed, and the reaction rate constants and activation energy were determined from the time-dependent phase abundance data.

In 1965 Africa maintained its position as a region of the world essential to advanced non-Communist nations for supply of vital metals and minerals. The position stemmed from the fact that Africa produced in large quantity a number of key minerals of which either or both resources and production capacity elsewhere did not approach the needs of the free world. The Republic of South Africa alone contributed more than three quarters of the gold mined in the entire non-Communist world besides an estimated 60 percent of metals of the platinum group and the entire new supply of amosite asbestos, and Africa as a whole was nearly the non-Communist world's only source of gem and industrial diamond. Africa also accounted for 83 percent of non-Communist world cobalt production. Besides these massive contributions, Africa in 1965 provided 50 percent or more of the new supply from non-Communist countries of the following mineral commodities: Lithium minerals, corundum, manganese ore: and chromite, and over 20 percent of new supply from non-Communist countries of columbium-tantalum concentrates, antimony, beryl, vanadium, phosphate rock, and copper. Africa also accounted for 18 percent of the non-Communist world's output of uranium, 14 percent of its tin, 11 percent of its lead, 9 percent of its zinc, and 8.9 percent of its crude oil output. With respect to chromite, at yearend Africa's reserves of the mineral were far larger than those of all other non-Communist regions combined. This probably also held true for manganese ore. In the case of crude oil, the fact that Africa's share of non-Communist world output was 1.6 percentage points greater than in 1964 was significant, particularly inasmuch as the output rate was continuing to increase at yearend.

ThOUGH at present there is a wide range of possibilities for the quantitative determination of preferred orientations, pole figures of identical specimen material have not been determined by different methods as yet.''' The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co.(CC&V) celebrated completion of a two-year, $168.5-million expansion and capital improvement program. An open house celebration was held in the historic mining town of Victor, CO on Oct. 4, 2002. Hundreds of townspeople, the press and other invited guests from the mining industry joined the employees of CC&V in the celebration. The event included mine tours, company displays and a barbecue picnic, complete with a country and western band. The Cresson Mine is located about 40 km (25miles) west of Colorado Springs, CO between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. The mine is the only large-scale gold mining operation in Colorado and now employs about 300 (ME, October 2001, pp.21-28). The operation is a joint venture between Anglo-Gold (Colorado) (67%), based in Greenwood Village, CO, and Golden Cycle Gold (33%), based in Colorado Springs. CC&V is managed by AngloGold North America. AngloGold North America is the U.S. subsidiary of AngloGold, the world’s second largest gold mining producer. This report gives results of metallurgical investigations performed by the Bureau of Mines on mineral samples taken during April 1959, from Hawaiian bauxite deposits on the islands of Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii. The bauxite samples were tested at the Bureau's Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, Rolla, Mo., to determine if alumina could be extracted. The results were encouraging. Extraction of the alumina by the American Bayer type digest of crude ore samples from Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii recovered 78.8, 73.1, and 70.0 percent, of the total alumina, respectively. These recoveries were increased to 82.8, 85.5, and 79.5 percent by modifying the treatment, which consisted essentially of calcination and weak caustic desilication to provide a residue. The residue was then treated with calcium oxide and digested in a strong caustic solution to extract the alumina.

"Abstract The wet type and dry type of deep mixing methods have been developed and widely applied for on-land and marine constructions in Japan. The quality assurance (QA) of the methods has been usually carried out by unconfined compression test on field stabilized soil sampled by core boring in Japan. In some other countries, stabilized soil excavated by the wet grab sampling instead of core sampling is often subjected to unconfined compression test for quality assurance. There are several merits and demerits in each method, but few studies have been carried out to compare the stabilized soil strength of these two types of specimens to discuss their applicability to practical construction. The author has conducted a series of field and laboratory tests to compare the stabilized soil strength and discuss the applicability of wet grab sampling to QA for wet and dry types of deep mixing method.In this study, the wet grab sampling was carried out at two road embankment construction sites where the wet type and dry type of deep mixing were applied. The cement stabilized soil was excavated at the three depths by a wet grab sampler soon after the DM column construction. The test result is compared with the other test data in the previous study to discuss the applicability of the web grab sampling method for QA of cement stabilized soil.IntroductionThe Deep Mixing Method (DMM), an in-situ soil stabilization technique using cement and/or lime as a binder, is often employed to improve soft soils (Kitazume and Terashi, 2013). A variety of factors and their interactions affect the eventual strength of a deep-mixed column, while some of which are controllable (e.g. binder type and dose) by engineers while the others are not (e.g. soil types, ground temperature, etc.; Babasaki et al., 1997). In addition to laboratory mix tests, which in essence are a parametric study to estimate the influence of these factors on a particular soil’s strength, the quality assurance (QA) practice in Japan usually involves unconfined compression test on sampling cores from the stabilized columns after a given curing period. It has been recognized, however, that the ‘field strength’, or the strength of the retrieved core, quf is on average lower than the ‘laboratory strength’, qul, evaluated by laboratory mix test. Also allowing for the inevitable variability, existing guidelines (for example, PWRC, 2004 and CDIT, 2008) recommend the design quf /qul values of, for example, 0.5-1.0 for the CDM (Cement Deep Mixing; a wet-type technique, in which binder is added as slurry) and 0.2-0.33 for the DJM (Dry Jet Mixing; a dry-type technique, in which binder is added as powder)."
