Total sales of diesel fuel in the United States continue to Increase. This growth is due primarily to two causes: More conversion to diesel units by the rail-roads In recent years, and the greater use of diesel engines in trucks, busses, and tractors. Following are some figures on the distribution of the fuel computed from data issued by the Bureau of Mines.2/ [ ] Deliveries of diesel type fuel from refineries totaled 91,522,000 barrels during the first six months of 1955,3/ corresponding figure for 1954 was 91,170,000 barrels. Information on the properties of this engine fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply such information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

A potentiometric model study has been made of the effect of vertical fractures existing in the matrix of the reservoir on the flooding or cycling performance. Fractures can have unusual flow characteristics. Fluid entering one side of a fracture can emerge on either the same or opposite side of the fracture, depending on the particular streamline. Fracture orientation has a great influence on the sweep efficiency. However, sustained fluid injection may still permit large areas to be swept. INTRODUCTION One can find considerable information available in the literature on the effect of fractures originating at the wellbore on sweep efficiencies of water-flooding or gas cycling programs.1-5 However, there arc few, if any, quantitative data reported in the literature on the effect of vertical or horizontal fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on secondary recovery performance. Several papers have been presented on the effect of vertical and horizontal fractures on the productivity or conductivity of waterflood and gas injection patterns, but in all cases the fractures initiated at the well and simulated commercial fractures.6,7 It is believed that natural fractures may exist out in the reservoir matrix and would effect the displacement performance. The purpose of this report was to study the effect of a few isolated vertical fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on the performance of waterflood or gas injection patterns. DESCRIPTION AND EQUIPMENT Since the potentiometric model was described by Lee8 it has been widely used to study numerous types of fluid displacement problems. The potentio- metric model can be used for fluid displacement studies when the following assumptions are valid: (a) steady-state conditions exist; (b) the mobilicy ratio is one; and (c) the capillary and gravitational effects can be neglected. Five-spot and direct line drive square patterns were studied using a copper strip of the desired length and orientation to simulate a vertical fracture in the reservoir matrix. The 20 x 20-in. model was considered to represent only one element of an infinite array of similar patterns. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS FIVE-SPOT PATTERN — ONE FRACTURE BETWEEN INJECTION AND PRODUCING WELLS Fig. 1 shows a quadrant of a five-spot pattem with the vertical fracture existing out in the matrix along a line connecting the injection and producing wells. Length of the fracture was equal to 35.4 per cent of the distance between injection and producing wells. In this particular pattern it is noted that fluid breaks through from the injection well to the producing well when the dimensionless time is equivalent to 26.9. "Quebec Cartier Mining operates a pelletizing plant in Port-Cartier, QC. Grinding, agglomeration and pellets induration are the three main steps in the preparation of iron oxide pellets. In 1998, following different recommendations, the company increased the speed of one of its ball mill in order to increase the grinding efficiency of the machine. As expected, the increased speed lead to an increase of the power draught, which did not produce the expected increase of fineness of grind, neither its allows to increase the mill throughput. The change of behaviour of the mill could hardly be understood by comparison of discharge size distribution at initial and modified mill rotation speed. On the other hand, the use of the selection function from a population balance model provides an insight of the changes that occurred in the mill. This paper reviews the various steps required for the estimation of a grinding mill selection function. Results of the calibration to Quebec Cartier grinding mills show that the increase in the mill speed leads to higher rate of breakage of coarse particles, at the expenses of less efficient breakage of medium and fine size particles. In the case of the studied mill, breakage of coarse particles was probably not the critical step of the mill operation. INTRODUCTIONOre size reduction is the major energy consumption step in any mineral processing operations (Austin et al., 1984). Size reduction is required to either liberate valuable minerals from the gangue minerals in which they are imbedded, or to increase the specific surface of the ground material. Plant engineers continuously face the challenge to find grinding machines, operating conditions or grinding circuit flowsheet configurations that could improve the size reduction process at lower energy or m6dia consumption."

The kinetics of sulfidization of hematite (Fe203) by H2S gas at various partial pressures have been determined over the temperature range of 170° to 500°C. The process was controlled by thin films of pyrite (FeS2) and troilite (FeS) which were protective and formed diffusional layers. At higher temperatures the thermodynamic drive to form FeS2 decreased, and consequently the rate of formation of FeS, decreased. Conditions for the development of thin layers of FeSz consisting of 10 to 100 atomic diameters are presented. Laboratory flotation results on synethetic ores indicate floatability identical to that of pyrite of normal xanthate flotation. The prospect of high-temperature sulfidization of metal oxides using H2S, S, or other sulfur bearing compounds is intriguing as a potential activation process for flotation since the thermodynamics are very favorable for a large number of systems. If the kinetic parameters are sufficiently well understood it may be possible to provide surface sulfide layers a few angstroms thick, thus imparting normal sulfide floatability characteristics to the oxide. For thin layers the total sulfur pick-up would be small except for very high surface area materials but in most cases this sulfur could be readily removed by roasting if necessary. The general reactions for the sul-fidization of metal oxide MxO, to a metal sulfide MpSq using H2S may be written for the three conditions py > xq; py < xq; and py = xq: A large thermodynamic advantage is obtained in many systems because of the relatively large negative free energy of formation of H,O compared to H,S. For the temperature range 2S° to 1500°C &apos; where AFOis the standard free energy and T is absolute temperature. As is evident from Eqs. 4 and 5, the free energy of formation of H ,0 is approximately 35 to 37 kilocalories per mole greater than that for H,S over broad variations of temperature. For oxide-sulfide systems as outlined above, sulfidization may be expected to occur for the conditions: Groups I and 111: that is, if the terms on the right are more negative than those on the left the reaction is expected to occur thermodynamically. A primary objective of the Bureau of Mines geomechanics research program is to develop a better understanding of support behavior and interaction of supports with the strata so that supports can be more closely engineered to the geological conditions in which they are employed. Four longwall shield supports were instrumented with an eight-transducer instrumentation array to measure leg, canopy capsule, and compression lemniscate link forces from which resultant shield loading was determined. The instrumented supports were monitored over a 4-month period, producing over 75 shield cycles of resultant shield loading. Resultant loading is the true measure of support resistance, providing both roof-to-floor and face-to-waste support reactions as well as the location of the reaction on the shield canopy. Observed roof support reactions were analyzed, with particular emphasis on horizontal shield loading, since it is the least understood design parameter. Average, peak, and change in shield loading during the mining cycle are discussed. Correlations among data parameters are examined, as is the distribution of support loading at the headgate and midface. Conclusions are drawn as to the effectiveness of the shield support at this installation. Recommendations are made for further research needs.

The US Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture (SCJV) are working on a production-scale, in situ copper recovery project in Arizona. The research is being conducted at the Santa Cruz site, located 11.2 km (7 miles) west of Casa Grande, AZ (Fig. 1). Santa Cruz is a 1.36-Gt (1.5 billion st) porphyry deposit averaging 0.6% Cu, of which 65% is oxidized, concealed beneath post-mineral alluvium at depths of 365-914 m (1500-3000 ft). The Bureau and the SCJV will evaluate in situ mining as a method for extracting copper from this previously unmined deposit. Research objectives of the Santa Cruz project are: - to demonstrate that an in situ research test can be operated in an environmentally acceptable manner ; and * to operate an in situ well pattern long enough to develop information on copper recovery and economic feasibility data. In situ mining of copper from undisturbed deposits has not been attempted commercially. There are several potential advantages with in situ mining: less exposure of miners to hazards, lower pital costs for the mine and plant and lower operating costs. In addition, there are no pits, dumps or tailings, which means less environmental impact.

As part of a program for developing methods of using domestic titanium deposits, the Bureau of Mines investigated methods for chlorinating titanium slags prepared from titaniferous minerals by electrosmelting. Titaniferous slags were made from ilmenites in the following deposits: Valley County, Idaho; Trail Ridge, Fla.; Aiken, S. C.; and Maclntyre, N. Y.; titaniferous magnetite from Iron Mountain, Wyo., were also evaluated. The tests were made in two chlorinators, a 4-inch and a 36-inch unit. Preliminary testing was done in a 40-millimeter bench-type unit. Chlorine gas was contacted with a loose mixture of titaniferous slag and carbon at a high temperature to form titanium tetrachloride. The moving-bed system used in this work involved a downward movement of feed countercurrent to the chlorine flow, and residues continuously removed from the bottom of the reactor. The performance characteristics of these slags depended on their composition, which varied widely according to the geographic source of the ore. The results showed that all but two of the slags could be chlorinated as effectively as rutile, converting 70 to 80 percent of the titanium to the tetra-, chloride. The two slags that proved difficult were made from New York ilmenite and Wyoming titaniferous magnetite. These slags contained enough magnesium to cause clinkering, which necessitated that the bed be prematurely withdrawn before more than 70 percent of it could react. The iron content of the slags did not interfere with operating the chlorinators. The data from the 4-inch and the 36-inch units were in agreement on the relative amenability of the slags to chlorination.

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions that are present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and. this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, however, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general the term "nonmetallic inclusions" seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONSTITUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those that occur as a result of reactions taking place in the body of the molten or solidifying metal and (2) those that result from the mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which the steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulphidea but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from the molten or solidifying steel may be caused by (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change in equilibrium constants as the steel cools to the freezing temperature, (4) decreased solubility with lower

Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and shear strength parameters(cohesion and angle of internal friction, Cand F) of rocks are important parameters needed for various engineering projects such as tunnelling and slope stability. However, direct determination of these parameters is difficult and requires high-quality core samples for tests. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the applicability of the Brazilian test (BT) - a simple, less sophisticated and inexpensive method for both specimen preparation and testing - to estimate the UCS and shear strength parameters of rocks. Thirty-seven rock types were sampled and tested, 24of which were volcanic, 8 were metamorphic, and 5 were sedimentary. Statistical equations were derived to estimate the UCS and shear strength parameters of rocks using the BT. The validity of the statistically derived equations was confirmed using predictive analytics software (PASW Statistics 18). A strong linear relation was found between BT and UCS values. BT and UCS values exhibited prominent linear correlations withthe cohesion values of rocks. The Mohr envelope was also used to determine the cohesion and friction angle of rocks using BT and UCS values. It is deduced from the current study that the BT values can be used to estimate the UCS and cohesion. However, no relation was observed between the angle of internal friction values and the UCS and BT for all rock types. Therefore, different approaches are suggested for the estimation of the internal angle of friction for application in the preliminary design of projects.

The objective of this study is twofold, The first is to present the composition of the offshore petroleum industry in terms of lease bonuses and the value of hydrocarbons produced from Federal offshore tracts. The second is to present costs of producing petroleum (oil and condensate) in the Gulf of Mexico with a financial analysis of an offshore operation. To prepare a financial analysis of an offshore operation, a model was derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced. To establish cost and income guidelines for the model, a group of seven oilfields in the Gulf of Mexico ranging from 7 to 75 miles from shore and in water 20 to 130 feet deep was selected for study. A net profit or loss statement was prepared for each field and a discounted cash flow rate of return was calculated. Discounted cash flow rates of return for the seven fields range from 1.1 to 19.5 percent. Under the two specified conditions set up for the model (a 20-year and a 30-year oil depletion model), the rates of return are 17.2 and 13.7 percent, respectively. To January 1, 1959, the top four operators in the Federal offshore areas had paid approximately 40 percent of the amount spent on all lease bonuses and produced about 56 percent of the total hydrocarbons.

The International Ground Control Conference in Mining has always provided an open forum for the publication, presentation, discussion, and often heated debate on roof bolting systems mostly with attention to how, when, and why they work. During the last 24 Conferences at least 170 papers have been presented by International Experts on these “simple” devices that range in length from 30-inches to 20 ft and from 5/8 to 2 inches in diameter. Roof bolts are primarily mechanically anchored, glued, cemented, or driven. Bolts are placed vertically, angled, or tied together with special fixtures (trusses and slings). They have been termed active, passive, stick-slip, and several other descriptive acronyms or mining slang expressions. This retrospective paper will present the changes in bolt types and usage, point out some of the biggest myths and hail the most significant advances (according to the authors’ opinions of course).

This paper addresses the methodology of introducing risk into the development of mine plans for open pit mines. Recommendations are put forward for achieving a risk balance between mineral resource estimates and slope design. A design process identifying criteria for different stages of planning is presented. Business risk is separated from geological/geotechnical risk and procedures to address these within the development of mine plans are suggested. It is concluded that a formal design process improves communication between key decision makers and adds value to shareholders, investment.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the &apos;fine&apos; and &apos;coarse&apos; size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and &apos;coarse&apos; particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

During the course of the major research in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne into the creep characteristics of lead and .its dilute alloys, it has been the practice to prepare the majority of test specimens from rolled strip. From time to time during the progress of the work, certain variables involved in. the rolling of the experimental ingots have been investigated. It is proposed to collect together in this paper the results of these experiments. Some general features relating to the type of deformation produced have been discussed in a previous paper.While it is admitted that the conditions prevailing through this work differ&apos; in some respects from those of industrial rolling practice, it is felt that many of the factors investigated have an important practical significance. This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rim. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The leaching of zinc and copper from Nigerian bulk sulphide ore with sulphuric acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide was studied. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant for the sulphuric acid leaching of zinc and copper from a complex sulphide ore. Distribution of elementals within the various particle sizes was initially determined by ICP-OES and XRF to provide a basis for explaining the dissolution process. The effects of concentration of hydrogen peroxide, particle size, stirring speed, and leaching time at a constant temperature of 298K were studied. There were variations in elemental and mineralogical composition within the different sizes. The concentrations of zinc and copper reduced as particle size decreased while silica, sulphur, iron and lead contents increased. Dissolution results showed that the leaching rate of copper was lower than that of zinc. The highest recoveries of zinc and copper were obtained at a leaching time of 180 minutes, stirring speed of 160 rpm, particle size of 75 µm and a concentration of 1M H2SO4/1MH2O2. It was observed that the leaching rate of zinc and copper increased with increasing hydrogen peroxide concentration. Increased stirring speed had a negative leaching effect as it promotes hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Several of the larger copper projects recently built have included a molybdenum byproduct circuit as part of the overall project due to the favorable molybdenum market conditions and overall economic contribution to the project. This paper provides a summary of moly plant flotation practices across a number of both recent projects and historical ones. Modern Molybdenum flotation flowsheets predominantly incorporate self-aspirated cells and forced air cells with nitrogen addition. The paper provides insight into the process considerations, capital and operating costs associated with both of the cell types. It also reviews metallurgical aspects and important safety aspects. Other aspects including instrumentation and degree of automation are also discussed along with overall plant design.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated methods for the recovery of byproduct heavy minerals from sand and gravel operations in Oregon and Washington. These heavy minerals are not currently recovered except for gold in a few areas. The recovery of byproduct heavy minerals would provide a domestic source of minerals presently imported, and a more efficient use of domestic resources would be accomplished. Samples from more than 40 locations were treated by gravity separation to yield heavy mineral concentrates (black sands). Magnetite, ilmenite, zircon, rutile, chromite, platinum-group minerals, radioactive minerals and gold were identified in the concentrates. Individual zircon, ilmenite, chromite; magnetite, and gold products were recovered from selected concentrates by low-and high-intensity magnetic, high-tension, and heavy-medium separation techniques. The recovery for the individual mineral products ranged from 67 to 95 pct.

"The most economical way of dewatering mineral concentrates is to reduce the moisture content in the material mechanically using thickeners and filtration avoiding thermal drying whenever possible. In addition to this, the dewatering process should produce low moisture cake, high quality liquid, consume little energy. As a part of the dewatering process The CERAMEC® capillary filter has been proven to meet these requirements in over 150 installations. The filtration is done by using ceramic filter plates with small pore size. The capillary action in the filter medium secures gas free filtration at good vacuum, and due to the small pore size, filtrate is crystal clean and particle free. The energy consumption is minimal. This paper will discuss results from filters installed at Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy in Finland where the technology was has been used since the late eighties. Results from more recent installations like Los Pelambres in Chile and LKAB in Sweden will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe idea of using capillary action to make dewatering more efficient was invented two decades ago. Ten years later whole filter plants utilizing the new method were delivered to mine concentrators for dewatering of mineral concentrates. Further development of ceramic membrane plates made it possible to meet the requirements in iron ore dewatering. In addition to low cake moisture, high capacity and low energy consumption, there are a lot of environmental advantages in using capillary filtration.
