This paper describes the present condition of mining-induced damages in Japan and the characteristics of them. The change of mining operation and environmental condition has caused various significant impacts on the ground environment: subsidence, cave-in, springing out of ground water etc. The characteristics and the influences of these phenomena are discussed by investigation of the actual conditions and by fundamental studies. Some counter measures are also introduced.

"Evaporites, such as salt and potash, pose unique problems to ground-support designs not encountered in other rock types. Evaporites are subject to continual creep and no amount of ground support can successfully arrest this process. Common ground-support techniques that are useful for most rock types may reduce the effective life of bolts in evaporite mines and can create unseen hazards. A different approach to ground support must be applied to provide long-term support in areas where high creep rates are present. The goal of effective ground-support designs in these situations is not to contain the rock and prevent it from moving; rather, the ground-support design must be able to move along with the rock and contain any fully detached slabs until additional remediation measures can be undertaken. The most appropriate ground-support designs will consider both the expected movement of the rock and the duration that the area needs to remain accessible.INTRODUCTIONEvaporites, such as salt and potash, pose unique problems to ground-support designs not encountered in other rock types. The factors that must be considered in design stem from the deformation behavior of salt, which can fail in a brittle manner, akin to most rocks, but can also deform in a slow, ductile manner, resembling the stretching and elongation of steel. The deformation behavior of salt has been well established in technical circles where it has been studied for decades (Hardy and Langer, 1984). Much of the research in salt mechanics is related to repository science, specifically at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in southwest New Mexico. RESPEC has been continually involved in the WIPP from the initial design considerations (Gnirk, Grams, and Zeller, 1977) to the current day (Keffeler, 2016) and has been able to leverage cutting-edge research of salt mechanics into practical solutions for mining operators. While a detailed description of salt mechanics is not provided in this document, Fossum and Fredrich (2002) include a fine overview of salt mechanics. Maltby Colliery, operated by RJB Mining (UK) Ltd is successfully mining the Parkgate seam in Yorkshire at a depth of 1000m using longwall retreat. Extraction in the Parkgate seam is influenced by interaction from previous workings in the Swallow Wood Seam 160m above. The paper describes in-situ stress measurements and simple gate road convergence measurements carried out to assess the extent of the interactive influence. The stress measurements, obtained using the stress relief overcore technique, were carried out from a maingate development roadway in an area where the stress redistribution under an overlying pillar and adjacent panel goat could be measured. The measured vertical stress distribution confirmed a significant interactive influence with high imposed vertical stresses under the overlying panel edges. Simple roadway convergence monitoring stations established in the gateroads of a retreating panel and in the development gateroads of the adjacent panel, confirmed higher rates of roadway deformation relating to overlying panel edges and pillars, particularly in the areas where a vertical stress window developed during panel retreat. In addition to highlighting a close relationship between closure rate and the measured vertical stresses, the convergence monitoring proved valuable in establishing characteristic deformation behaviour under specific interactive influences and also in defining the optimum location, extent and time of installation u£ additional roadway support and reinforcement. The information from the measurement programme has enabled the Mine Management to gain a better understanding of the interactive influences on roadway behaviour and was instrumental in designing the layout of panels in an area of the North East district of the mine where previous experience had indicated the combined influence of high interactive stresses and weak roof lithology resulted in difficult strata conditions both at development and on panel retreat. The planned location of panels and gateroads took into account both mining operational considerations and the need to avoid potentially high risk interaction zones as highlighted from analysis of the monitoring results. To obtain additional data on parameters influencing roadway deformation, extended roadway convergence monitoring has been established.

A rock mechanics instrumentation and monitoring program was implemented during pillar extraction at Gulf Mineral Resources' Mt. Taylor Mine, the deepest uranium mine in the U.S. Three types of monitoring were employed: (1) drift convergence around stopes (using a portable tube extensometer), (2) stress changes in pillars (using vibrating wire stressmeters in horizontal boreholes), and (3) load changes in haulage ways under stopes (using vibrating wire load cells in jack stands). Results include convergence-time graphs, convergence contour maps, stress-time graphs, a stress increase contour map, load-time graphs, and abutment load limit maps. Major factors influencing results include (1) size of pillars around the extraction area, and (2) presence and orientation of a major fault adjacent to one extraction area. These factors, combined with pillar extraction, produced evidence of load transfer over 120 m from a stope measuring only 55 m x 45 m. Vertical stress increases of 7 to 17 MPa (1000 to 2500 psi) within 60 m of the stope were obtained using the stress- meter manufacturer's method. The fault apparently prevented load transfer in the down-dip direction but increased load transfer in the up-dip direction. Convergence rates of up to 1.3 cm/day (0.5 in/day) were measured at two stations. Instruments were generally reliable despite adverse underground conditions. The instrumentation and monitoring program at Mt. Taylor provided a warning system against ground control problems and a characterization of ground behavior for future development and extraction of pillars. Recommendations are made for future mining and instrumentation practices.

Coal strata strength is included as a vague term in most of the pillar design formulas, either as a questionable fraction of the intact coal strength or a size-dependent relationship for scaling down a laboratory value to the in situ strength. In order to introduce a coal mass strength criterion which would be compatible with current design trends, the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system was revised to incorporate factors governing coal seam behavior under load. A number of adjustment factors have been proposed but, the most significant change, is the introduction of a parameter representing the heterogeneity of the seam. When developing a rock mass strength criterion, it is necessary to find the constants of appropriate intact rock strength criteria and to establish a correlation to scale down these constants as a function of the RMR. For four intact rock strength criteria, the constants for coal were found using the Nelder-Mead method. To correlate the constants of the strength criteria with the coal seam quality values (RMR), a procedure was developed based on finite element modeling of in situ large scale tests for which the RMR was known. A new coal strata strength criterion is proposed, in a principal stress formulation, for modeling coal pillar behavior when the stress field in a pillar is known. A linear relationship is also given, to be used when empirical pillar strength formulas are used to design pillars. The proposed criteria have been evaluated in a case study.

Compared to the rocks encountered in, say, metalliferous mining or tunnel drivage in igneous and metamorphic rocks, the strata associated with the coal measures are relatively soft. If excavations are made at depths greater than one or two hundred metres, zones of fractured or yielded rock develop around the openings. The stress which can be taken by yielded rock at the boundary of an opening is low, but because of the friction present between the fragments or particles, the sustainable stress rises rapidly with distance from the opening until sufficient confinement has been developed to prevent failure of the rock in the first place. Thereafter the laws of elasticity will apply and increasing distance will reduce the stress field until conditions consistent with the cover load are reached. For rocks which maintain their elastic condition right to the edge of an opening, finite element analysis and similar techniques have proved successful in determining the distribution of stress around the opening. This approach, however, is not successful when a yield zone is introduced between the elastic zone and the opening. Nevertheless, some estimate is required if help is to be given in the siting of roadways and in the determination of adequate pillar sizes. This matter is of particular importance in the planning of new mines especially if retreat faces are involved, as extensive roadway drivage must be planned and executed before experience of the effects of face extraction is gained. In 1977, the author published [I] a method based on 'stress balance'. The total aggregate downward load over a large area will remain that of the cover load even after part of the coal seam has been removed. Any rise in stress in ribsides and pillars must be offset by an equivalent stress reduction across roadways and other areas of extraction, and vice versa. Knowledge of one can lead to an estimate of the other, provided the general form of the stress distribution can be postulated. It is the object of this paper to revue the method in more detail and to give further examples of its successful application.

This paper describes geomechanical criteria employed by Consol Energy for selecting mine-specific longwall face supports in the past decade. The criteria include immediate and main roof rock characteristics, floor rock characteristics, critical tip-to-face distance and shield operating range. Detailed roof rock properties from high-density core holes as well as in-mine scope holes are used to evaluate the set load density and shield stiffness required to control the immediate roof and the yield load density required to absorb the load density developed from main roof weighting. Detailed floor rock properties from core holes and in-mine floor bearing capacity tests are used to specify the maximum peak toe pressure as calculated by the Jackson method. The critical tip-to-face distance is evaluated based on the immediate roof rock strength, layering and thickness. The shield operating range is evaluated based on main bench thickness, the presence of thick draw slate, the potential of minor roof falls at the face and transportation restriction. Three case examples representing three different geologic conditions are presented to illustrate the successful application of these geomechanical criteria for selecting longwall face supports within Consol Energy in the past decade.

"Mine-wide ground control stability is essential to any mining operation to prevent catastrophic failure of underground structures. The ability to recognize or indicate the potential for ground control hazards in underground mine operations is highly desirable to reduce or eliminate ground-control-related injuries and fatalities. The acoustic emissions (AE) form of non-destructive testing has been used for decades to determine material or machine deterioration or potential failure. This paper presents the findings of research in AE with the results of laboratory bolt pull tests and comparisons to field experimentation, including AE sensors and bolt load data in an underground stone mine. The goal of the project is to compare laboratory results of AE sensors on roof bolt pull tests with field experimentation to determine the capability of predicting bolt failure or roof deterioration.INTRODUCTIONMine-wide ground control stability is essential to any mining operation to prevent catastrophic failure of underground structures. One of the original goals of this research was to develop a methodology for a simple wireless device that could provide an indication or warning of potential roof bolt or roof failure. Various types of nondestructive testing (NDT) have been used for decades to determine material or machine deterioration or the potential failure of either. One type of NDT is acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, which has been studied for use in mining to predict rock bursts and mine failures since the 1940s (Obert, 1941; Obert and Duvall, 1942). The primary goal of the work was to compare laboratory results of AE sensors on roof bolt pull tests with field experimentation to determine the capability of evaluating bolt loading or roof deterioration in an underground stone mine. Bolt pull tests were conducted in the laboratory to establish a repeatable trend of AE activity versus bolt load. The second part of the project was to then install bolt load cells in an underground stone mine and monitor AE activity in the vicinity of mining."

Strong roof helps minimize roof fall problems in coal mine entries. However, the Inability of strong roof to cave readily may contribute to major ground control problems In Iongwall and retreat mining operations. The concern expressed by mine operators prompted this Bureau of Mines study to analyze the effects of strong roof members on ground stability around Iongwall openings. The problem was approached from three directions: development of a theory to analyze the strain energy conditions In the coal and surrounding strata, modeling the effects of different thicknesses and strengths of Coal and roof strata, and field Instrumentation of powered supports In two Iongwall mines. Results from the theoretical and modeling analysis confirm the accepted belief that a strong roof does, In fact, play a major role in high stress concentration problems In and around the Iongwall panel. Analysis of the effect of different roof overhang dimensions and properties on relative strain energy buildup In the coal and roof Is presented. Shield pressure data Indicate possible methods for detecting noncaving roof behind the shields. Strategies to monitor roof overhang and control dangerous conditions caused by the noncaving roof are also presented.

Twenty years of research into the design of permanent gateroad support (packs) in coal mines have resulted in two methods of pack design based on engineering principles. The first, the detached block concept, is based on static loading of the support system by an hypothetical detached block. The second, the roof beam tilt concept, is based on the dynamic loading of the support system as the roof beam tilts over the roadway about a pivot point located in the rib-side. The roof beam tilt concept has been used on a number of occasions to design packs in a variety of conditions. However, recent work in the Sydney Coalfield of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, has shown that design criteria based on the roof beam tilt concept in its present state of development are far from universal in application. After a review of published pack performance data, including detailed studies conducted in the UK, France and Canada, it was found that consideration of the mechanical properties of the roof beam produced a design criterion that fitted the available data. Modifications to the design process using the roof beam tilt concept are suggested for use in pack design. The work also revealed that current research in other aspects of coal mine ground control, particularly the areas of powered support design and subsidence prediction, may provide valuable information leading to major advances in this field. Such developments could also extend the application of the roof beam tilt concept to the design of pillar systems.

Monolithic packing systems have gained in popularity as a gate side packing method, However, there has been no detailed investigation to assess their underground strength behaviour. This work includes the laboratory and in situ investigation for strength behaviour determined on various monolithic packing materials namely Tekpak-XX, Hydropak-20, Hydropak-30, Astrapak-3R, Flashpak, Thyssen pack and Aquablends. A simple technique for assessing the pack strength was developed at the laboratory by using a penetrometer, of which penetration resistance can be directly correlated with the uniaxial strength of the pack. The in situ strength investigations were made on core samples obtained from three pipes inserted inside the pack, while the penetration test were made on the pack surface. The in situ results indicated that the packing material develops an inconsistent strength on various part of the pack which was mainly related to an inadequate mixing of grouts inside the pack.

During the last decade mechanical rock excavation has become increasingly widespread in the mining industry and, more in general, in excavation engineering. This technology, especially the tools and their operating mode, has developed according to empirical procedures and for this reason their validity should be ascertained by systematically re-examining the rock breakage processes. This topic has been approached in the framework of a joint research project involving the Universities of Cagliari (Italy) and Wollongong (Australia). The investigation has been carried out experimentally as well as with the methods of numerical modelling which is based on fracture mechanics principles. The first results of this integrated research led to the proposal of an interpretation of rock breakage by means of drag tools and to the identification of a basic correlation between the rake angle of the tool and the grain size of the rock fragments produced and, therefore, the energy efficiency of the operation.

A novel ground control program has been developed at Plateau Mining Company through five years of geotechnical investigations. The study was initiated to determine the causes for roof stability problems and to develop alternative support and monitoring systems for increased safety and productivity. From systematic roof fall observations, extensive geologic mapping, roof drilling and monitoring ground movements along gate entries of four longwall panels, a sand- stone channel system was detected and shown to impact roof stability. In particular, underlying mudstones up to seven feet thick experienced instability due to differential compaction and load transfer from the gob. Roof bolter operators were trained to report roof lithology for mapping channel positions into the roof and for selective use of longer bolts. This boosted operator morale, and improved ground conditions. Monitoring rates of roof movement is used in these areas for detection of instability and for application of secondary support: This has significantly increased safety and productivity.

Thoresby Colliery is in the process of recovering an old roadway that was flooded following the closure of an adjacent mine. The aim is to re-use the roadway as a gate road for a longwall retreat panel and it is therefore important to establish the condition of the existing rockbolt support during the recovery operation. Two NDT methods, ultrasonics and RMT's newly developed RF (Radio Frequency) system were used in combination to interrogate the rockbolts to determine their condition. This paper describes the condition of the rockbolt supports, the NDT methods used and the problems that had to be overcome to successfully apply the two methods.

An extensive underground roof-monitoring program was conducted in order to determine the roof strata behavior under various conditions. In total 29 sites at 5 different collieries were monitored using the sonic probe extensometer. Results showed that, in drill and blast sections, there are often pre-existing openings in the roof prior to the installation of the support. An estimated 42 per cent of the total roof displacement monitored in drill and blast sections took place prior to the installation of support. A comparison between roadways and intersections indicated that, for a 40 per cent increase in the span, taken across the diagonal of art intersection, relative to the roadway width, the magnitude of the displacement in the roof increased by a factor of 3. Total displacements measured were relatively small, only 2 reaching double figures of 12 mm. The remainder were all less than 7 mm. The results also showed no evidence of a substantial increase in the height of the bed separated, potentially unstable roof strata, as is the case in the high horizontal stress-driven beam-buckling mechanism experienced in for instance some Australian coal nines. Therefore, it was concluded that, in South African collieries, the effects of horizontal stresses is generally relatively small compared to overseas collieries.

Einführung in die Problematik 1.1 Die Bedeutung des Schildausbaus Seit fast 30 Jahren ist die Konkurrenzsituation auf dem Primärenergiemarkt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland durch einen von Erdöl and Erdgas geführten and insbesondere gegen die Steinkohle gerichteten Verdrängungswettbewerb gekennzeichnet, der den Steinkohlenbergbau zu tiefgreifenden RationalisierungsmaBnahmen zwang. In diesem Zusammenhang kam es Anfang der 70er Jahre zur Einrührung des Schildausbaus, der eine erhebliche Produktivitätssteigerung in den Strebbetrieben zur Folge hatte and damit die Uberlebenschance des Steinkohlenbergbaus in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland enorm verbesserte. Der Grund hierfdr lag darin, daB der Schildausbau im Vergleich zu dem vor ihm eingesetzten Rahmen- and Einzelstempelausbau eine wesentlich hdöhere Ausbauleistung erbrachte, weil er sich weit weniger empfindlich gegen Hangendausbruche and aus dem Alten Mann hereinbdschende Bruchberge erwies. So erklärt sich auch die stürmische Entwicklung and die schnelle Verbreitung des Schildausbaus. Bereits 1975 stammte rd. 50 % der Fdrderung aus Schildstreben, 1990 waren es fiber 75 % and heute sind es fiber 90 %. 1.2 Die Staubentstehung beim Schildausbau Die Erfolge des Schildausbaus sind unbestritten. Jedoch nahmen :nit seiner Einführung die Probleme der Staubentstehung and Staubbekämpfung im Vergleich zum Ein zelstempel- and Rahmenausbau erheblich zu. MaBgebend dafür sind hauptsächlich folgende Gründe: - Abbau von dozen nit gebrächen, weichen Hangendschichten, die erst durch Schildausbau abbaubar wurden, - Zerkleinerung des auf den breiten Kappen aufliegenden Bergematerials infolge der höheren Ausbaustiltzkrafte des Schildausbaus, Zermahlen der sick in die Spaltabdichtungen hineinarbeitenden Bergestückchen, - Erhöhung der Wettergeschwindigkeit infolge der durch die Baufarm des Schildausbaus bedingter. Verkleinerung des Strebquerschnitts verbunden mit der Aufwirbelung and Aussichtung von Staub, - Aufwirbelung von bereits abgelagertem Staub im Bruchraum beim Hereinbrechen der Dachschichten. Die genannten Gründe treten zumeist nicht in jedem Abbaubetrieb gleichzeitig auf. Sie rind vielmehr u.a. abhängig vom Ausbautyp, von den Gebirgsverhältnissen and von der Abbaugeschwindigkeit. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining work place associated with coal bumps. Current research focuses on both analyzing historical seismic data from bump-prone operations and utilizing a mine-wide seismic network to investigate the exact strata failure mechanics associated with bump-prone geology. The anticipated outcome of this research will be reduced bump incidences through advanced engineering concepts and designs which implement the new understanding of strata behavior. The analysis of the historic seismic data consists of correlating observed mining seismicity with the geologic and geometric parameters at the sites. The primary seismic parameters are the timing, location and magnitude of a recorded seismic event. These parameters are correlated with such mining parameters as: the overburden, the size of the immediate gob, the size of the district gob area, etc. This detailed analysis of historical seismic data has provided an informative quantifiable relationship between many of the specific mining parameters and the induced seismicity. The second aspect of the coal bump research is the instrumentation of an appropriate field site to determine the main roof, floor, and gob behavior associated with hump behavior. The chosen field site is a deep-cover longwall mine with competent geology in a historically bump-prone area. The primary field instrumentation is a three-dimensional, full-waveform, seismic array with both surface and underground sensors surrounding an active multi-panel district. The purpose of this seismic array is to determine the timing, the exact location, and the mechanism (tensile fracture, bedding plane slip. etc.) of the failure of the strata surrounding the active and multi¬panel gobs. The preliminary results presented in this paper help to define the strata failure areas around the longwall panel.

The present state of Czech and Polish coal mining industry is presented at the beginning of the article. This paper will inform the reader of the general data concerning hard coal reserves? number of mines, number of miners, output, number of longwalls, productivity, depth of extraction, and extraction methods?in both countries. The main part of the paper describes the methods of gateroad development as well as gateroad support characteristics (support types, gateroad shape and dimensions, distance between support sets, types of reinforcements). The development prospects of gateroad support in the Czech and Polish coal mining industry are also presented.

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative longwall tailgate roof support and have grown in usage during the past few years. Heintzmann Corporation has been installing pumpable roof supports at the RAG Resources Emerald Mine in western PA since 1998, where they have provided effective roof control in their longwall tailgates. Despite the success of these supports in this application, questions remain regarding critical design issues for optimizing the use of this support technology. The support loading profile is characterized by a high initial stiffness with peak loading occurring at less than one inch of convergence, followed by significant load shedding with a post failure capacity comparable to that of wood cribbing. Therefore, the key to optimizing the support utilization is to provide sufficient load density to prevent convergence from occurring beyond the peak loading capacity. This requires an understanding of how the supports interact with the ground conditions, hence measurement of the ground reaction curve. In order to obtain this information, pumpable roof supports were instrumented to measure support loading. Roof deformation and roof-to-floor convergence measurements in the vicinity of the instrumented supports were also made. The experimental parameters for the installation were the support spacing and water¬to-solids ratio of the grout, which controls the grout strength and ultimately the maximum capacity of the support. The study clearly shows that at this mine a 24-inch diameter support is fully capable of providing adequate ground control under depths of cover of 750 ft as only 50 pct of the available support capacity was utilized outby the longwall face. It was also shown that the 2.00 to 1 water¬solids ratio, despite providing a slightly softer support response, is sufficient for maintaining the same degree of roof control provided by the traditional 1.75 to 1 grout mix. The 10-ft spacing of the supports did not cause any ground control problems outby the face. However, inby the face the performance of the support is degraded once the peak capacity of the supports is exceeded. It appears that the large load shedding behavior, which is characteristic of this support following peak loading, allows the immediate roof to separate. When this happens, the support is unable to regain control of the roof in time to prevent failure of the immediate roof beam.

Following a massive rib wall failure along the reclaim belt of the large underground surge bunker at CONSOL?s Bailey Mine, a multifaceted, cleanup and rehabilitation effort was initiated to rapidly stabilize the bunker rib walls and place the bunker back into production. Rehabilitation of the bunker included infilling and re-mining of the failed excavation area, installing a system of horizontal tie-back cable bolts, constructing a large knee wall at the base of the rib, reducing water inflow, and providing drainage for rib water. As a result of the coordinated effort, the bunker was safely placed back into production within 38 days. The 7500-ton surge bunker, an engineering feat in itself, was constructed in 2003 to accommodate production surges from two longwalls. In 2005, 14.8 million raw tons passed through the bunker. The 22-foot wide by 75-foot high surge bunker excavation extends as much a 52 feet below the base of the Pittsburgh seam. The bunker excavation measures 325 feet in length, with feeder and reclaim belt excavations extending the bunker excavation by approximately 500 feet. The massive rib roll, which occurred near the bottom of the reclaim belt slope, measured as much as 45 feet high by 60 feet long. Failure of the rib was attributed to progressive failure of a thick claystone unit present near the slope bottom area. Saturation of the claystone by water inflow, high insitu horizontal stress, and pre-existing rock joints were considered contributing factors. Immediately after rib failure, mine production was temporarily rerouted to a parallel belt. Two bulkheads were then constructed 175 feet apart along the reclaim belt slope, and a customized fly ash-cement mixture was pumped from the surface into the unstable reclaim slope area. A tunnel was then mined through the backfill along the original reclaim slope contour; the new excavation supported by a system of customized steel sets. To assure stability of the adjacent bunker rib wall, a pattern of 70-foot long cable bolts were installed downward from the adjacent entries to effectively tie back the rib. Drainage holes and a 12-foot high knee wall were installed. Adjacent gas wells were also plugged to help reduce inflow. Periodic inspections and continuous monitoring are being used to help assure bunker stability.
