Austar Coal Mine (formerly Southlands and Ellalong Collieries) has had a long association with difficult strata control conditions associated with mining depth and a highly jointed/cleated coal seam. The conditions include poor longwall face conditions, cyclic loading, heavy tailgate (TG) roadway conditions, and difficulties in maintaining stable roadways on development at 5.2 m (17 ft), as well as the geotechnical challenges of an 8.5-m (27.9 ft) -wide roadway required for installation faces. The introduction of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) to this environment has aided in the management of some of these issues, but LTCC has also given rise to other geotechnical considerations. Additional geotechnical issues associated with LTCC not only require management during operations, but also require consideration when evaluating new mining areas at Austar Coal Mine or potential LTCC extractable resources throughout Australia and the world. In September 2006, LTCC commenced at Austar Coal Mine in longwall panel A1. Since this point the LTCC face has been increased from 147 to 216 m (482 to 709 ft)and finally to 227 m (745 ft) in width, and it has also been rehanded and modified in the three fully extracted panels to date. The application of LTCC in panels A1, A2, A3, and now A4 has been very successful, both from a coal resource recovery point of view and in the management of the principal hazards of spontaneous combustion and strata control. This paper focuses on the geotechnical aspects of the application of LTCC at Austar Coal Mine and also reviews some advances in general strata control management at the mine.

Moonee Colliery operates a longwall extraction system in the Great Northern seam of the Newcastle Coal Measures, approximately 100km north of Sydney, NSW. In the initial mine area of longwall blocks1-4a, the Great Northern seam is overlain by a massive conglomerate approximately 35m in thickness. Unanticipated sudden, blocky caving of this material has produced windblasts with associated velocities of 100m/sec and over-pressures of 35kPa. Although these events have not resulted in fatality, the potential safety risk to face personnel was such that the mine was threatened with closure. The development of a Windblast Management Plan to minimise the exposure to windblasts, a Micro-seismic Management flan to predict caving events, and the use of hydraulic fracturing to generate caving on demand, have all contributed to the salvation of the mine. Prior to the introduction of hydraulic fracturing, falls were highly variable and ranged in goaf area from 2000m2 to 30,000m2 with an average of around 7.000m2. Hydraulic fracturing has introduced consistent and far less variable falls, planned as averaging around 5000m2 and all accompanied by microseismic warning, Moonee Colliery is believed to he the only operation in the world using real-time microseismic warning and using hydrofracturing as a day-to-day operational process. These processes have enabled it to return to financial viability in an environment of strict procedural control, whilst ongoing efforts are made to optimise and enhance these systems. Moonee's story is a case study of the successful application of research and development work to the economics of a mine.

Longwall shields provide essential ground control in Iongwall mining, yet a high percentage of shields are operating at less than peak capacity and many at well below the rated support capacity due to defective hydraulic cylinders or malfunctions in other hydraulic components. Leg pressure data are currently collected on state-of¬the-art longwall shields, but typically are not analyzed to evaluate shield performance. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Shield Hydraulics Inspection and Evaluation of Leg Data (SHIELD) program is a Visual Basic software system that is designed to analyze leg pressure data and identify shields that are not performing to rated specifications. The program analysis is configured to detect the following conditions: (I ) loss of leg pressure, (2) imbalance in leg pressure, (3) low set pressure, (4) low yield pressure, and (5) full extension of the bottom stage. Other performance assessment measures include the percentage of the support capacity utilized (ratio of peak load to yield load), the percent of time that a shield operates at yield load, the ratio of the set load to the yield load, and the amount of support capacity that is lost due to leaking cylinders. Historical record keeping will allow the user to select a particular shield and review the performance record as developed by the program for that shield. In addition to these performance assessment measures, the software will include an animated description of shield hydraulic systems that will describe the operation and significance of each hydraulic component and the impact of component failures on the shield's capability to provide the required roof support. A general overview of the SHIELD program is provided in the paper together with an example analysis of a 2.5-year-old Australian longwall face.

Ground anchorage systems in the form of rock bolts are used extensively throughout the world as supporting devices for civil engineering structures such as bridges and tunnels. It is widely recognized that non-destructive testing methods for ground anchorages need to be developed as a high priority [1 ], with only a small proportion of anchorages currently being monitored in service [2]. The condition monitoring of anchorages is a relatively new area of research, with the objective being a wholly automated or semi-automated condition monitoring system capable of repeatable and accurate diagnosis of faults and anchorage post tension levels. The GRANIT tm system developed by the University of Aberdeen is capable of measuring the integrity of ground anchorages and has won two major UK Awards - the National John Logic Baird Award for Innovation in 1997 and a Design Council Millennium Product Award in 1999. The normal procedure with the GRANIT tm system [3,4] is to train a neural network on dynamic response data that has been sampled from an anchorage over a range of post-tension levels. Further data is needed in order to test the neural network. The paper presents neural networks that have been trained on data taken from a number of anchorages on different sites, and the results of the diagnosis of these neural networks on new test data is presented. The results show that the cross-diagnosis of anchorages is possible, where a neural network trained on one anchorage is capable of successfully diagnosing the post-tension level for an anchorage of similar construction, and the high level of accuracy that can be attained with the GRANIT tm technique is shown. The paper also introduces a mathematical model of the GRANIT tm process.

A project to evaluate the suitability of point Load strength tests for testing and classifying coal measure rocks for coal mining application was initiated by Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET). A summary of this study with emphasis on the important findings is presented in this paper. The instrument as used in this study is a Robertson Research Rock Strength Index Log. Because of the variation in the correlation ratio between uniaxial compressive strength and point Load strength index for hard rocks and soft rocks it was decided to establish this corre¬lation initially on cement concrete specimens specially prepared for this purpose following ASTM specifications. These specimens are expected to represent soft rocks and at the same time would be of uniform quality. Once a general trend of this correlation was established tests were performed on coal and rock samples from the sub-bituminous and bituminous coalfields in Canada. The most important results may be stated as follows: (i) Generally, the common value of the ratio between the uniaxial compressive strength and the point load strength index ranges between 8 to L4. (ii) The Robertson Research Rock Strength Index Log proves to be quite suitable for testing sandstone, siltstone and some coals from the bituminous coalfields but problems have been experienced when testing weathered samples or samples from the sub-bituminous coalfields. (iii) In some cases tests were successful if Larger samples from weathered zones or from sub-bituminous coalfields were used. However, a magnified load gauge for 0-3KN or 0-5KN is expected to be the best solution for soft and weathered rocks in most of the cases. Some mudstones and some rocks from weathered zone do not appear to be suitable for these tests. This aspect of the study is still under investigation. (iv) Deterioration of rock properties due to weathering has been determined through tests on samples collected from weathered and unweathered samples.

The use of resin-grouted rock anchors continues to gain popularity in underground wall mines in the United States. It is estimated that during 1985, more than 30% and as many as 35% of all roof bolts used employed sane from of resin anchor. The so-called 'combination' bolting systems, which generally utilize a resin pint-anchor, have also found increased application. This increased application is particularly true in poor ground, where more 'traditional' support measures have performed poorly. Virtually all resin bolts in use today in U.S. mines employ cartridge-type delivery systems, which in general, have produced good results under a variety of conditions. However, a host of inconsistent and sometimes uncontrollable variables may significantly alter the optimum bolt performance. These variables have been identified and are well documented in the literature (Snyder, et al., 1979; Kwitoweki and Wade, 1980; Serbcusek and Signer, 1985). The beau of Mines, Denver Research Center (DRC) conducted a major research project aimed at investigating the effects of selected aspects of installation procedures on resin-bolt performance. One objective of the project was to establish anchorage criteria for full column resin bolts installed in actual mining conditions. This piper describes the results of a particular study which focused on quantifying, through field tests, possible reductions in bolt anchorage due to installation of less-than optimum resin columns. These columns might result from losses of resin to surrounding strata, or non-compliance with recommended installation procedures. Over 1000 resin bolts having grout columns ranging from 12 inches up to 48 inches (full column) were installed and pull-tested at 13 underground test sites located in a total of 11 mines (Fig. 1). Four basic roof-rock types were included: shale, top coal, sandstone, and limestone. The majority of the bolts employed 3/4-in-diameter, 48-in-long, type 40 rebar having a minimum '~ated' yield point of 17,600 lb (8.8 tons). Actual yield strength may vary by manufacturer.

Multiple seam mining interactions caused by full extraction mining, whether due to undermining or overmining, frequently involve tensile failure of the affected mine roof. The adverse ground control conditions may prevent mining for both safety and economic reasons. Prior researchers have identified the geometric, geologic and mining factors controlling multiple seam mining interactions. This numerical study examines the mechanics of these interactions using a modeling procedure that 1) incorporates the essential constitutive behavior of the rock such as strain- softening of the intact rock and shear and tensile failure along bedding planes and 2) captures the geologic variability of the rock especially the layering of weak and strong rocks and weak bedding planes. Specifically, the numerical study considered the effect of vertical stress, interburden thickness, and the immediate roof quality of the affected seam in both undermining and overmining situations. The models show that for overburden-to-interburden thickness (OBAB) ratios of less than 5, interactions do not occur, and that for OBAB more than 50, extreme interaction is a certainty. In between, the possibility of an interaction was found to depend on gob width-to-interburden thickness ratio, site specific geology and horizontal stress to rock strength ratio in addition to the OBIIB ratio. The models also showed that horizontal stress was profoundly altered well above or below a full extraction area and that these changes are likely to influence the success or failure of multiple seam mining. The role of horizontal stress in multiple seam mining interactions has received little attention in prior investigations. Four factors control the mechanics of multiple seam mining interactions: 1. vertical stress concentration 2. horizontal stress concentration 3. stress re-direction 4. bedding plane slip bands A combination of vertical and horizontal stress increase and high stress gradients in the vicinity of full extraction areas re-orients principal stresses into a very unfavorable direction. This seemingly small stress re-orientation has a profound adverse effect on bedded rock.

"Researchers from the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed instruments in the track entry and in the pillars of a northern West Virginia longwall coal mine between two planned panels for the purpose of monitoring the behavior of the ground. The instruments included four cable bolt load cells to measure the change in gateroad loading, six borehole pressure cells to measure the loading in the pillars, three six-channel roof extensometers to measure roof sag, four convergence measurements on the cribs to measure the crib loading, and a multipoint borehole extensometer to measure the pillar expansion. The instrumentation was all connected through two multiplexers to a single Campbell Scientific permissible datalogger located about 350 feet outby the instruments. The goal of the project was to record all of the measurements as both longwall faces passed the site of the instrumentation and to use the data to calibrate numerical models.This report describes the recording of all of the measurements taken as the first panel approached and then passed the instrumentation site. This study provided valuable data related to the ground response and support performance that will be used to improve safety in longwall gateroads.INTRODUCTIONA longwall mine in northern West Virginia was selected as a second study site for an ongoing research project into gateroad layout and support design. The area was affected by a transition from limestone to sandstone in the roof. The entries were 16 feet wide, and the height was approximately 80 inches. The layout for the longwall panels was 1,170 feet wide by 4,000 feet long. The panel configuration was right-handed, and a three-entry gateroad was used between panels. The pillars next to the headgate were 137.5 feet by 115 feet center-to-center, and the pillars next to the tailgate were 275 feet by 100 feet center-to-center, with the crosscuts at 60 degrees. The width of the gateroad was a total of 215 feet."

Surface subsidence associated with coal mining activities in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa changes the natural environment in several ways, and current challenges for mining companies include rehabilitation of the natural environment and the prevention of further degradation. To monitor the spatial and temporal evolution of surface subsidence, traditional fieldbased monitoring approaches such as GPS and spirit leveling are employed at a number of locations. However, the resulting measurements are point-based, and frequent revisitations are necessary to map the evolution of surface subsidence basins over time. To address these limitations, differential interferograms derived from repeat-pass satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems were tested for their ability to measure and monitor surface deformation. The SAR data was captured by the European ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellite and covered a timeframe between 2008- 09-15 and 2008-09-15. The resulting interferograms revealed several features indicative of surface subsidence. Ground truth data confirmed the presence of a subsidence basin, detected using differential interferometry techniques during the 35-day period between April 12, 2008 and May 17, 2008; a maximum vertical deformation of 3.2 cm (1.3 in) was recorded. Interferometric monitoring revealed an eastward migration of the subsidence basin between June 2, 2008 and September 15, 2008 with an additional 4.7 cm (1.9 in) of subsidence observed. This migration coincides with the advance of the working face of the mine during this period. Finite element modeling will be performed in order to model the rates and evolution of surface subsidence haloes as underground mining advances. These presented results demonstrate the ability of interferometric synthetic aperture radar techniques to measure surface subsidence as well as the monitoring of the evolution of subsidence basins over time. This implies that the technique could be included, together with traditional field-based surveying techniques, in an operational monitoring system. With knowledge on deformation rates and subsidence basin evolution, informed decisions on current and future infrastructure development can be made and remedial actions and prevention strategies can be formulated for the problems associated with environmental degradation.

"This paper presents results from a recent study conducted to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced stresses and deformations on the mechanical integrity of shale gas wells drilled over a longwall abutment pillar. The primary objective is to demonstrate that a properly constructed gas well in a standard longwall mining abutment pillar can maintain mechanical integrity during and after mining operations. Successful designs would allow for the safe recovery of both coal and gas reserves. Major elements of this comprehensive study include: (1) modeling of rock movements to predict impacts on gas wells, (2) measurements of actual rock movements at the surface and in the subsurface, (3) measurements of actual impacts on test wells designed similarly to real shale gas wells, ( 4) comparison of modeling results to actual rock movements to validate the model, and (5) employing the validated models to evaluate various casing and cementing designs to minimize casing deformations and absorb longwall-induced strains along the intermediate and production casings.A study site was selected over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under about 600 feet of cover. Four test wells and four monitoring wells were drilled and installed over an abutment pillar with 125-ft by 275-ft centers. The four test wells were drilled to a depth of 642 ft, or 42 ft below the Pittsburgh seam, and were designed like a real shale gas well, except that only three casings (namely the surface, water protection and coal protection casings) were installed in each well. Casing steel grades, wellbore diameters and annular spaces were purposely varied in each of the four test wells to evaluate the effect of different well designs. The four monitoring wells - one vertical extensometer and three in-place inclinometers (IPI) - were drilled to different depths to measure the vertical settlement and horizontal displacements as a result of longwall mining on both sides of the abutment pillar. In addition to the test wells and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the 1,500-ft-wide longwall panels on the south and north sides of the abutment pillar mined by."

In India, pillar mining is contributing more than 90% of underground production which involves extraction of a part of coal from bords with pillars around as natural support in the development stage. #Liquidation of these pillars with splitting and stooking, broken nature of face during mining under complex geomining factors like massive roof, varying treatment of goaf and over or underlying workings result in high stresses and deformation in and around the neighbouring piilars, causing operational problem and hazards to mine safety. This paper suminarises the results of three case studies of depillaring under shallow depth with or without stowing. Assessment of nature and amount of mining induced stresses and deformation was done under these conditions, by insitu instrumentation and observation at three depillaring panels of Girmint. Samla and Lachhipur collieries of ECC at 54, 90 and 110 m depth cover respectively. The value of induced stresses and associated deformations was comparatively low in well caved and stowed waves, whereas for massive roof the roof fall followed overriding of pillars and stooks, with very high value of induced stresses and deformaton in absence of stowing. The stress in the centre and outer edges of the pillars changed with respect to depillaring face advance or splitting of pillars. The caving panel of Girmint colliery under weak coal measure formation, showed maximum induced stress in the pillar at 4 m distance from the face which was 1.2 times (16.6 kg/sq.cm) the preminlng stress of the area. The main roof fall over partially stowed goaf of Lachhipur colliery under massive roof strata caused overriding of pillar after crushing 39 stooks of 7.5 x 7.5 sq.m in rythmic sequence with development of 133lsq.cm maximum induced stress. Well stowed Waf of the same panel reduced this value of abutment stress to 2.3 times (65 kg/sq.cm.) body stress after 40 m further advance of the face from the crushed zone. The depillaring at Samla colliery even under massive roof strata induced low stress, equal to 0.8 times field stress only under the same condition with stowed goaf. The studies revealed the effectiveness of stowing in the goaf over loading of pillars and stooks.

Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. Upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwail miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Trapped highwall miners present a safety hazard to workers during their recovery. Best practices to avoid trapped highwall miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system, Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.

"Unexpected movement of ground can potentially endanger lives, damage equipment or destroy property. Occupational accidents frequently occur with fatal consequences in developing countries with significant economic dependence on industries such as mining. Therefore, there is increasing need for miners' protection against such hazards. Slope stability and roof support accidents are two of the major causes of fatalities at surface and underground mining operations. According to national codes, employers are obligated to protect workers against accidents; however, these rules fall short of the standards in developed countries. National safety regulations should clearly specify support systems. The International Labor Organization (ILO) prepared two codes of practice, aiming to guide those responsible for improving standards of safety and to provide guidelines for drafting of safety regulations for the coal mine industry and quarry open cast mines. The practical recommendations of these codes in the ground control area have been analysed and the advantages and disadvantages of ILO codes concerning ground control are summarized.INTRODUCTIONTwo million people die every year from work-related accidents and diseases. An estimated 160 million people suffer from work-related diseases, and there are an estimated 270 million fatal and non-fatal work-related accidents per year. In economic terms, the ILO has estimated that 4% of the world's annual GDP is lost as a consequence of occupational diseases and accidents (ILO, 2009).Mining has always been dangerous due to many potential risks such as those associated with using machinery in enclosed spaces, rock falls, blasting operations and explosion of flammable gases, which endanger miners' safety and health. However, it is suggested that implementing new laws along with strict adherence would reduce such risks in the workplace.The severity and frequency of accidents are trending downward in developed countries, where the focus is on large private companies who invest heavily in mechanization and developing economies of scale. But in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries, minerals are extracted by people working with simple tools and equipment; they work on a smaller scale, are more flexible, and can exploit irregular ore bodies and steep, dipping seams."

"For engineering problems of “three under” coal (coal trapped under buildings, waters-bodies and railways) exploitation, environment protection and gangue separation from raw coal underground exist in Tangshan Coal Colliery. By analyzing concrete technical problems, a technical approach of closed cycle “coal mining-gangue washing-backfilling-coal mining”, i.e. integration of coal mining, gangue separation and solid backfilling, is put forward with key technologies including gangue transportation with great depth, gangue separation from raw coal underground and integration of coal mining and backfilling. Based on the specific geological conditions of Tangshan Coal Colliery, 591m vertical feeding transportation system with great depth is designed; meanwhile, for efficient gangue transportation, ancillary wear-resisting pipe size and buffer equipment are optimized. Underground gangue separation system is created to be joined with the existing production system and backfilling system; besides, as per separation characteristics of coal and gangue, buddle jig is adopted for gangue roughing of raw coal underground. By cooperation of backfilling hydraulic support and other key equipment, the designed stope backfilling system completely realizes integration of coal mining and backfilling. Engineering practice shows that, through the research and implementation of the above key technologies, integration of coal exploitation, gangue separation and solid backfilling is successfully implemented in Tangshan Coal Colliery; moreover, it completely solves the three major engineering problems and realizes waste disposal, underground washing and separation, and ground surface subsidence control.INTRODUCTIONSo far, “three under” coal (coal trapped under buildings, watersbodies and railways) and key state-owned coal resources trapped under villages in China have reached 13.7 billion t and 5.22 billion t, respectively. With the development of coal enterprises, China currently has more than 1,600 gangue dumps (Miao et al., 2010a) with accumulated stack amount of 4.5 billion t, occupying a land area of 150,000 km2; moreover, surface subsidence caused by mining activities has damaged the environments of industry, agriculture, transportation and living, while new environmental pollution sources formed by coal related industries also result in damage to ecological environment (Huang et al., 2011a). On the one hand, due to large scale coal mining, some coal collieries suffering from resource exhaustion are faced with survival problems; on the other hand, coal mining has caused and been faced with increasingly prominent environmental problems, such as “three under” coal exploitation, waste disposal and ground surface subsidence control (Miao et al., 2010b; Zhang et al., 2009)."

[A standardized checklist in a questionnaire format, was established to investigate selected factors associated with coal nips roof falls, as derived from an intensive review of the literature. A plot study was undertaken to aspect and explore possible statistical relationships that may exist with these parameters. the Purposes of toe study were to: 1. Study in a systematic and empirical fashion selected parameters that may be capable of differentiating characteristics of roof falls; 2. Obtain some predictive indices cased on selected physical and management related variables so that predictions of future problems associated with mine roof falls can be completed, prior to its actual occurrence. Accomplishment of these goals should result in valuable guides to the mining engineer in scheduling exploration work and 4 determining economic feasibility of certain ground control and .lining pro and practices. "Safe mining of coal seam sandwiched between abandoned upper and lower room-and-pillared mines (ULPM) ·is increasingly becoming the focus of attention in recent years, which is closely related to the damage intensity of the upper and lower interburdens. The #7 seam with ULPM in Baijiazhuang coal mine was selected for this research. According to the mining and geological conditions, the vertical stress and plastic zone distributions were determined first by numerical simulation. Then, a theoretical model based on the elasti-plasticity theory was developed. The stress distribution and failure zone created in the interburden by mining the upper and lower seams were determined. Finally the feasibility of mining #7 seam between the abandoned upper and a lower seam was evaluated. The results show that: (1) the distributions of abutment pressure and plastic zone coincide, both of which can be used to evaluate the failure zone in ULPM. The failure zone penetrates the whole upper interburden, while only parts of the lower interburden fail. (2) the theoretical failure zone coincides with the maximum distribution zone of abutment pressure and plastic zone obtained by numerical simulation: the failure zone height in the lower interburden is less than its thickness, while that in the upper interburden is larger than its thickness. (3) the #7 seam is located in the failure zone created by the upper seam room-and-pillar mining, which leads to well-development fractures and blocky fragments in the roof, thereby it is unstabled. (4) when mining the #7 seam in the interburden, the key is to control the roof strata and proper support measures should be taken timely to ensure safe mining.INTRODUCTIONMany coal mines in China mine the thick, superior and easily mineable resources preferentially, while the thin, inferior and difficult-to-mine resources were abandoned (Chappells and Trentrnann, 2015; Zhenfu, 2012; Xu, et al., 2015; Guorui, 2009). "A coal burst occurred on 15 April, 2014 at the Austar Coal Mine, located west of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. The burst resulted in fatal injuries to two men working as part of the mining crew at the development face. At the time, a continuous miner was being used to mine a longwall development gate road through heavily structured coal, at a depth of approximately 550m. A number of pre-cursor bumps had occurred on previous shifts, emanating from the coal ribs of the roadway, in proximity to the coal face.This paper reviews the geological, geotechnical and mining conditions and circumstances leading up to the coal burst event; and presents and discusses the available evidence and possible interpretations relating to the geomechanical behaviour mechanisms that may have been critical factors in this incident. The paper also discusses some key technical and operational considerations of ground support systems and mining practices and strategies needed for operating in such conditions in the future.INTRODUCTIONAustar Coal Mine is an underground longwall coal mine located near Cessnock in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales (NSW), Australia and is the only underground mine still extracting the Greta Seam in this region. The mine was the first in Australia to adopt the Chinese-developed Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) method for thick seam extraction. Typically seam thickness ranges from 4m to 7m and depth of mining from 480m to 560m, with future mining planned down to depths of up to 700m, making it one of the deepest operating coal mines in Australia.On 15 April 2014, a pressure burst occurred in the left hand rib at the active mining face of B Heading, 2 to 3 cut-through, Maingate A9 panel, during development of the gateroads for the ninth longwall top coal caving panel. Strata in the general vicinity was affected by disturbed geology and multiple geological structures. Figure 1 shows a section of the mine plan as at October 2014 (six months after the accident), indicating the current longwall extraction panel (AS) and the development panel A9 where the accident occurred. (Note: Neither development nor longwall face positions changed significantly between the time of the accident and the date of this plan). At the time of the accident the current longwall face was in excess of 1,000m away from the Maingate A9 development panel face position."

The North American Coal Corporation, its subsidiaries and other coal companies, have been mining the Pittsburgh #8 seam in Eastern Ohio for several decades. Underground mining by the "room and pillar" method, and more recently by longwall methods, have been practiced. This presentation deals with ground control problems and subsequent solutions to those problems for both mining methods. But first, let me briefly discuss some pertinent points about the geologic conditions of the coal seam near the southwest edge of the Pittsburgh Coal Basin. The Eastern Ohio region of the Pittsburgh Coal Basin is situated along the western edge of the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. The local terrain is quite steep, with topographic relief of 430-500 feet being common. The coal thickness in the region ranges from 36"to 120", with the average being 60" in the areas being currently mined. Regional dip of the seam is toward the southeast in an amount of 10 to 40 feet per mile. A cross-section of the mineable seam generally consists of the main bench (60"), a rider coal (6"-12"), and a claystone parting (6"-12") for a total excavated height of 6-7 feet. Greater excavated height occurs where the fireclay floor is so soft and friable that movement of mechanical equipment breaks up the first 4-8 inches. Generally, the main bench and rider coal thin and become more variable toward the southwestern portion of the mining area. The rider coal also grades laterally into a coaly carbonaceous shale. In those areas where the roof coal can no longer be counted on to help support the immediate top, some of the main seam (6") is left to protect the overlying 8'-12' of mudstone/claystone strata. These strata are virtually non-bedded, highly slickensided units and are "hung in suspension" by roof bolts from a more competent limestone stratum above. These mudstone/claystone units are very susceptible to moisture and thus to the weathering cycles. The rider coal or 6" of the main bench is left in place to "seal" the mudstone/claystone units in Mains and Submains development. For many years, it was thought that the strength of the limestone member was detrimental in attempts to fully extract the seam by conventional means; however, longwall methods that have been more recently employed have broken the "myth" that the Redstone Limestone prevents full extraction of pillars.

Total extraction mining of coal is being undertaken on a small scale by Anglo Coal South Africa. Longwall mining has been done in the group at New Denmark colliery since the 80s and recently the company started experimenting with pillar mining at Goedehoop colliery. Total extraction mining methods result in caving of the overburden strata that is often accompanied by displacement of air causing wind blasts. The windblasts can cause injuries to underground mining personnel, damage to mining equipment, and ventilation disruptions. Some incidents of windblast damage and injuries have been recorded at both New Denmark and Goedehoop Colliery that prompted mine management to experiment with the goaf warning device, an instrument developed by CSIR mining technology to give early warning of impending god. The initial version of the Goafwarn was originally developed to operate as a stand-alone unit, with LED lights mounted on the device that would flash if the unit was triggered'. That set up would be effective in small working areas where the flashing lights are visible to all workers. This requirement is more difficult to satisfy in longwall application of the unit where mining activities are spread over large linear distances of up to 250 m and the flashing lights would not be visible to all workers in the longwall face. It was also found that the single unit had limitations in distinguishing between man made vibrations and cracking in rockmass leading to an unacceptably high incidence of false alarms. The case studies describe the experiments that were carried out to ameliorate the two issues mentioned above through networking more than one unit. This was achieved through the development of radio communication from the warning devices to a central control (Trollex Data Acquisition Unit) from which the alarms are issued once the prescribed triggers are satisfied. The operating system was made up of 4 Goafwarn units installed 30 m apart with 2 in the tailgate and other 2 in the main gate. The alarm state was defined where 3 or more units were triggered simultaneously. The concept was applied successfully in real time during longwall mining, and management procedures have been developed to achieve safety through the system including switching off the shearer, and flicking the lights to warn people.

"High-strength cable bolts have been used for ground support in underground coal mines for many years. Cable bolts are routinely used as secondary ground support in numerous longwall gateroad support applications, areas that possibly experience the most severe conditions in current underground coal mining. Additionally, when mining ground conditions deteriorate, engineers oftentimes recommend cable supports as a principal solution because of the established credibility for successful ground control. Nevertheless, there is still a reluctance to utilize non-tensioned cable supports as an effective primary roof support alternative.This paper provides historical and recently documented examples of non-tensioned cable supports utilized as an effective primary ground support method in a western U.S. underground coal mine, and it will continue the technical discussion between the differences of various degrees of tension in cable supports with respect to ground behavior and reactions.INTRODUCTIONResin-grouted cable supports are widely used to support difficult ground conditions throughout the world. Through the use of innovative applications and configurations they have proven to be a major paradigm shift in roof support and ground control technology in the U.S. (Tadolini and Koch, 1993; McDonnell et al., 1995; Tadolini and Gallagher, 1994; Tadolini and Trackemas, 1994)Today, the basic cable bolt support consists of a high-strength steel cable installed in bore holes that range in diameter from 25 to 50 mm (1 to 2 in) depending on the strand size and drilling equipment. Cables are offered in both bright and galvanized, for corrosion protection, and range in capacity from about 30 to 60 tons. An example of a resin-grouted cable bolt and the key components is shown in Figure 1. The steel cables are flexible and the support length is not limited by the height of the opening. Lengths of up to 10 m (32 ft) have been supported with high pattern densities when standing supports were not operationally feasible. The most common lengths are 3 to 5 m (10 to 16 ft). An important physical characteristic is that PC-strand has an ASTM minimum elongation requirement of 4%. For comparison purposes, the ASTM 432-08 Standard Specifications for Roof and Rock Bolts and Accessories specifies elongation requirements for traditional roof bolts are a minimum of 12% for grade 40, 9% for grade 60, and 8% for grade 75 materials, respectively. Traditional roof bolts can stretch and elongate twice the length that cable bolts can, which makes design considerations challenging."
