Vibratory or oscillatory conveyors can be found in all types of industry, handling virtually any granular bulk material, often at elevated temperatures. These conveyors can be combined with other process functions, such as screening, cooling, drying and dewatering, while conveying. Although construction and installation is relatively simple, the engineering and design analysis of the vibratory mechanics is fairly complex. This paper will discuss the basic types of vibratory conveyors and the analysis of the material movement along the carrying trough.

The mining and processing of basic metals relies on water as a medium for transport. Metallurgical ores are ground, concentrated, leached and refined in an aqueous medium. Water is used for temperature control during processing and in air pollution abatement during smelting. All of these process steps result in liquid wastes. Many of the aqueous wastes from ore processing areas become the raw product for a second stage and water recycling may begin. The point at which water recycling or reuse has been initiated in the past, rather than water discharge, was where water conservation was manditory due to a shortage, where process conditions would allow or benefit from reuse, and where economic considerations demanded reuse. The Fontana, California plant of Kaiser Steel Corporation is an example of an integrated steel plant that was forced to practice water conservation and reuse due to its location in an arid environment.1 Only a small amount of water required to maintain the water reuse system in balance with respect to dissolved solids and product quality is discharged. The Butte, Montana copper ore processing plant of The Anaconda Company obtains 66% of the water required for production by recycling, after clarification and chemical treatment, 30 MGD of wastewater from its tailings ponds. This operation is estimated to save the company about $1200/day over a once through water system.2 Here plant location and economics favored water reuse.

INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. "INTRODUCTION The expansion of the Suez Canal, which runs between the Mediterranean and Red Sea, is at the top of Egypt’s economic agenda. The £8 billion development plan includes a new channel alongside the existing one which will double the number of ships able to pass each day and several tunnels to connect the Sinai peninsula to the main part of Egypt. The Egyptian government ordered three new tunnels under the Suez Canal in the area of Port Said as part of the Canal Region Development Plan. The three tunnels will contribute to the North Sinai expansion, helping to create a vast industrial zone and completing the coastal road extension from Rafah to Nuewiba. Two of these three tunnels will be allocated for roads and the third for railway traffic. A further part of the Suez Canal development mega project are an additional six tunnels in the area of Ismailia and Suez. The focus of this paper is on the two road tunnels in Port Said and will give an overview of the project and the challenges encountered regarding the technical complexity and tight time schedule both in its design and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW The tunnels will be built in the area of Port Said (see Figure 1) which is the most northern part of the Suez Canal.The road alignment connects the Port Fuad Road in the east bank of the Suez Canal to the Port Said-Ismailia highway in the west bank with a dual carriageway section. Each of the carriageways has two lanes. The bored diameter of the 2.8 km long road tunnels is 13.050 m and will be driven with two Mix-Shield TBMs. The distance between the two tunnel axes is planned with 42.5 m (discussion about a reduction are ongoing). The width of the Suez Canal is around 340 m at upper level and around 170 m at the bottom. During the TBM drive, three main geological layers are expected. Below a depth of around 40 m in a very soft clay layer, a dense to silty sand layer is predicted. Within the sand layer another silty hard clay is expected in different depths with variable thickness. After finishing the excavation of the road tunnels, the same TBM will be used for the railway tunnel. The lowest points of the road tunnels will be located 59 m below the surface (tunnel invert to surface) and only 18 m of ground cover exists between the tunnel crown and the Suez Canal invert. Minimum ground cover over the tunnel crown is approximately nine meters at the tunnel portals."

The mine development decision is made on completion of exploration to determine whether or not a mineral deposit should be developed to production and, if so, how. This involves the selection of an optimum mine development alternative from a number of technically feasible alternatives and the comparison of this optimum with those of other available investment opportunities. If the optimum is sufficiently attractive, the deposit is developed to production. The selection process is carried out within a framework of corporate objectives and resources. The mine development decision is based on the balancing of two parameters - - rate of production as reflected in plant capacity and cut-off grade. On the basis of available information and experience, detailed revenue and cost 'estimates are made for each feasible combination of plant capacity and cut-off grade. What economic evaluation techniques should be applied to these estimates to reduce each alternative to economic indicators that will enable meaningful comparisons and an informed investment decision? This is the essence of the paper. The determination of optimum plant capacity and cut-off grade has been the subject of intensive research efforts by economists and mining engineers (1-7). Their studies are based on marginal analysis and assume that, at the time of decision, certainty conditions prevail with respect to ore reserves, mining costs and mineral markets. The optimum mine development alternative is defined as that which maximizes profitability.

The amount of fines in run-of-mine coal has been increasing and coal quality has been deteriorating as a result of the increased use of mechanized and continuous mining methods. Removing the mineral matter and pyritic sulfur from coal prior to combustion will lower transportation costs, improve power plant performance and reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. Since physical cleaning methods can only remove individual particles of mineral matter and pyrite, it is necessary to crush and grind coal to fine sizes to separate these contaminants so they can be removed by deep cleaning processes. The increased portion of fines in run-of-mine coal together with attempts to increase the mineral matter removal efficiency have stimulated interest in fine coal cleaning technology. However, there are many problems to be solved before fine coal cleaning can be applied to power plant coals. These problems include: 1. coal cleaning plant capacity is reduced when conventional cleaning circuits are modifies to deep clean coals; 2. existing equipment and technology is not suitable for cleaning fine coal; 3. coal recovery is reduced; and 4. fine coal is difficult to dewater, dry, handle, transport and store.

In underground construction and mining work, situations occasionally occur where hard rock or concrete must be excavated at locations near critical structures or utilities. Fearing damage from blasting, contractors and engineers often explore the viability of using mechanical methods or expansive concrete to facilitate the excavation work. However, for moderate to large excavations, the prolonged duration and high cost of using these methods is often impractical. In these situations, under the right conditions, controlled blasting and blast-management methods can be used to speedup the work and lessen costs. The process of determining whether or not blasting is practical is often complex, particularly when risks are high. In this paper, general methods of conducting blasting risk evaluations and outlined and considerations for blast design and risk management are reviewed. This paper also includes three blasting case histories demonstrating how these techniques were used at recent projects. In the first case, a cautious blasting program was developed to facilitate the removal of concrete and rock within a large section of an active mineshaft. The second case involved critical blasting to excavate a dry lake-tap connection between a tunnel and a shaft at the Southern Nevada Water Intake No. 2 project in Henderson, Nevada. The third case history describes how novel blasting methods were used to carefully drop a 2,721,500-kg (6,000,000-lb) concrete caisson into a1.2-m (4-ft) rock socket at the Detroit Outfall No. 2 project in Detroit, MI.

"A heterogeneity study was conducted at Erdenet Copper Mine in Erdenet, Mongolia, to determine the fundamental sampling error associated with blasthole sampling. Using a custom designed sector sampler, six large blasthole samples were collected to perform the test that was developed by Pierre Gy, to estimate the constitutional heterogeneity factor for several types of ore. The study investigated the entire sampling protocol, from mine site to analytical laboratory, and quantified the contributions to fundamental sampling error (FSE) of the various stages of sampling and sample preparation. The total relative standard deviation (RSD) of sampling error was determined to be ±32% and ±49.4% for copper and molybdenum respectively. A classical statistics analysis conducted on the data confirmed the level of RSD. About 95% of the sampling error was produced from only one step in the sampling protocol: when the 1 kg sample was reduced to 50 g sample for chemical analysis. Therefore, it is recommended that the 1 kg sample be reduced to 50g using a slightly different protocol to minimize the FSE. The 1 kg sample should be first crushed to 0.2cm size. A 250g split should then be taken and fine ground. A 50g split should then be taken from the 250g fine ground split. These two simple steps will reduce the FSE to ±7.9% and ±17% for copper and molybdenum respectively. The modified sampling protocol effectively reduces the probability of misclassification of low grade ore to zero. INTRODUCTION The Erdenet copper-molybdenum open pit mine is located in Erdenet, in Orkhon province, Mongolia. The Erdenetiin-Ovoo copper-molybdenum deposit is between 1.5 and 3 km wide, and about 25 km in length (Erdenet Mining Corporation, 2016). Chalcopyrite, bornite covellite and chalcocite are among the major minerals found in the deposit. The mine processes approximately 26 million tons of ore annually. A study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental error associated with the blasthole cuttings and sampling protocol at the mine. The open pit mine uses 215mm diameter Russian drills to drill 17.5m holes for 15m benches. The total weight of blasthole cuttings for a 215mm diameter hole and 15m bench height is between 1.5 and 2 tonnes. This amount of sample is difficult and time consuming to collect and analyze. Therefore, a sector sampler was designed for the Russian drills to collect large samples that were representative of the blasthole cuttings (Ganguli et al., 2016). In order to eliminate the delimitation and the extraction errors, researchers consider sector samplers to be ideal for sampling blastholes (Pitard, 2008; Chieregati and Pitard, 2009). This method was intentionally more rigorous than the blasthole sampling protocol at the mine to ensure that the blasthole cuttings were properly sampled. This study was part of a broader study that also looked at the relationship between particle size and grade. The samples collected by the custom designed sector sampler were very large (195 kg on average), and therefore, sufficient for both studies. The relationship between particle size and grade has been reported in Ganguli et al. (2016)."

This project involves the reconstruction of a 1,100 ft. long by 75 ft. wide segment of an existing 4 to 5 track subway under Northern Boulevard in the Borough of Queens in New York City. The project includes widening the existing subway to permit the construction of new inbound and outbound subway (T1 and T2) ramps adjacent to and under existing operating tracks. The plan of the project is shown in Fig. 1. Existing tall buildings along the job site and a contaminated groundwater plume under an adjacent rail yard required construction of slurry concrete walls along the east and west construction limits. Groundwater cutoff across the north and south construction limits of the subway was achieved by jet grout walls built across the subway invert slab between existing track and third rails. The work involved dewatering the construction site to a depth of about 50 ft. below street grade. This is a four year project and includes extensive work to maintain and protect subway and vehicular traffic of over half a million commuters a day through the work area. The project cost was $160,000,000.

On 30 April 2004, a large scale slope failure incident occurred at the external waste dump facility of the South Field Mine, in the Western Macedonia Lignite Center, Greece. This landslide involved the mobilization of waste overburden material (that was continuously deposited for the last 20 years) in the order of 40 Mm3, while the material that moved outside the boundaries of the waste dump was in the order of 3 Mm3. The factors that led to failure as well as the procedures and measures taken in order to stabilize the failure and resume normal operations at the South Field Mine are presented and discussed. Emphasis is given to the impact on mine operations and the cost related to resuming of normal production operation as well as to implementing important modifications and improvements of the materials handling system.

This paper is one of a series of presentations organized by the Conference of American Society of Civil Engineers with the goal of making significant progress toward an equitable and effective allocation of risks in construction undertakings among the principal parties - owner, contractor and designer. The role I have been assigned is principally one of identification of risk while others will devote greater attention to the allocation of these risks and the contractual arrangements necessary to properly make these allocations. Construction projects are joint undertakings by parties who bring different skills and interests toward a common effort, much as this conference does. A project is not an adversary proceeding and does not benefit from establishment of an adversary mode, as our lawyer friends seek in the resolution of legal issues. Accordingly, I urge upon this Conference the adoption of two basic precepts and guidelines as the criteria for sharing of the risks inherent in construction undertakings toward achievement through mutual effort the common goal of a successful project completed in the shortest time and at the least overall cost. These precepts are: (1) that all risks are rightfully the owners unless transferred to or assumed by another party for a fair compensation; and (2) that the principle guideline in determining whether a risk should be so transferred should be whether the receiving party has both the competence to fairly assess the risk and the expertise necessary to control or minimize it. The sponsors of the conference have provided certain guidelines to the authors. There is, however, no constraint in expressing one's bias and I suspect that my contractor's outlook may be inherent in my comments. The guidelines have suggested that I indicate whether the risks identified are ones that can or should be shared or borne by one party alone. In doing so, I will attempt to follow the precepts I have recommended.

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lbs./ton U308, although there are very large reserves below this grade. We are interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen - today I am in an enviable position for two basic reasons - No. 1, since I am first on the program, the audience should start out awake because those that partied too much last night are still asleep, but in their room, not here. No. 2, since copper, iron, and mining technology are not competitive, the veracity of my statements will not be questioned. Most such meetings I attend are based on the subject of energy and the coal industry does have competition from oil, gas, hydro, and nuclear. However, to counteract this advantage I am the usual engineer with a limited vocabulary by schooling, and the remaining vocabulary almost completely eliminated due to the presence of ladies. In relation to the past of the coal industry, we have not only suffered the competition of other energy sources mentioned before, but in addition have in the last 25 to 30 years been required to meet the demands of a vastly changing market. To explain this statement, I am sure many of you can remember 30 to 40 years back when most homes were heated by coal furnaces or stoves and shudder to recall the shoveling of coal into the fire and the carrying out of ashes with the attendent manual labor dust. Now this space heating portion of our sales has almost become non-existant due to an almost universal switch from coal to natural gas, oil, and electric heating. Actual figures show a decrease from 119 million to less than 28 million tons per year in less than a twenty year span. Also, most of you can remember the coal burning steam locomotives and the tremendous volume of coal they consumed and then the very rapid change to the diesel-electric locomotives, incorporating improved large diesel engines driving D C generators and electric drive motors, which resulted in cheaper motive power. This change over was so complete that the annual tonnage of coal dropped from 125 million to less than 2 million tons in 15 years. 'Actually, now it requires some considerable interrogation and traveling to find a locomotive still operating on steam.

Commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailings streams is undergoing study by Syncrude Canada Lrd. When tar sand from an open pit mine is processed and up- graded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be recovered from the extraction circuit and can be upgraded to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. The titanium minerals concentrate consisting of a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, could be utilized as recovered or could be upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the construction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available for utilization.

The present interest in large diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a seven to eight thousand horsepower mill will cost from 1350 thousand to $600 thousand which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance and replacement costs. This is the position in which the engineer or designer usually finds himself and is really one of his primary functions -- establishing a realistic compromise between cost and performance.

Although roof bolting has been a major means of strata support for nearly two decades, little attention has been directed towards the design of bolt Installations. The variables involved are interdependent and their study complex. However, some simple tests may be employed to serve as guides to the efficient design of roof bolt systems. Local conditions are continually varying and are important to pattern design. This paper discusses such considerations and suggests techniques which may be employed to effect improved roof control with bolts.

The Pinto Valley Concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulphide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and moly concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/moly circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the moly concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the moly circuit were completed, the final moly concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns was chosen. The column design and construction were done utilizing in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing moly concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high moly tenors and low copper and iron content. In this paper, the operating parameters, mass balance, design, installation, commissioning and operation of the new flotation columns will be discussed.

We have developed a high-performance, flexible scheme for interpolating multi-dimensional data. The technique can reproduce exactly the results obtained, for example, from Ordinary Kriging and related techniques in 3D, or from Thin-Plate Splines (Briggs' minimum-cuwature algorithm) in 2D. Moreover, com- pared to traditional implementations of these algorithms, our method enjoys large computational-cost savings. The new approach produces an interpolation that obeys a Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The PDE may arise from physically based arguments, but its form can vary widely. It might be specified only implicitly (as through a Model Variogram), or be nonlinear (although a performance penalty could then apply). While a formal equivalence between Kriging and Splines has been known for some time (Matheron, 1980), the present derivation, from radial basis functions, further illuminates this connection. Thus, for example, we can make explicit the PDEs that underlie some of the Model Variograms most often used in Geostatistics. Besides its practical utility, the work thereby ac- quires a theoretical interest.

A prototype, self-contained mine refuge station air supply sys- tem was tested in an underground metal mine to verify it's ability to keep oxygen and catbon dioxide levels at acceptable concentrations in an emergency situation. In this test, 25 volunteers were assembled and sealed in a functional underground refuge station for a period of 24 hours, without the benefit of the standard com- pressed air supply. The prototype system was designed to: 1) operate on a self-contained power supply for a period of at least 27 hours; 2) supply oxygen at a metered rate; and 3) remove car- bon dioxide by re-circulating refuge station air through soda lime scrubbing beds. During the test period, the catbon dioxide concentration remained at an average of 2500ppm and oxygen concentration stayed between 20.2% and 20.6%. The volunteers found the prototype easy to use and seemed confident in its ability to provide a safe atmosphere. The test showed that this technology could become part of an underground mine's refuge station emergency equipment.

Longwall mine instrumentation for measuring abutment stress distribution, mining induced immediate roof stress change and deformation, and primary/secondary support loads and deformations provides critical guidance for the design of gateroad chain pillars and roof support. Field measurement results are also recognized as the best way to calibrate numerical models that have been used to study the failure and support mechanisms. International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) started in 1981 and since then, there were 26 papers published in the proceedings discussing the stress and load measurements as the face advanced using various field instrumentation techniques. The focus of this paper is on summarizing the analyses of the data published in these papers. Stress/load change monitoring included the following categories: gateroad chain pillar, abutment pressure, bolt load, and pre-driven recovery room. The data shows that the magnitude of stress changes as the face advances varies considerably from panel to panel and mine to mine. However, regardless of types of stress changes, pillar stress, abutment pressure, and bolt load, there exists a rough trend of stress increase as the face advances, generally consisting of three stages, i.e., stress/load (1) initially increases steady or slowly, (2) increases rapidly, and (3) increases reaching the peaks and dropping down slowly or sharply. The stress/load increases start earlier during the second panel mining and are larger than the first panel mining. This review makes it easy for the interested persons to find valuable data for other similar projects.
