The free-milling ore characteristics of the Fort Knox gold deposit are ideal for studying gold and silver behaviors in various processing circuits without serious interference of sulfide minerals and other refractory factors. A galvanic effect leads to faster silver dissolution than gold dissolution and, as a result, the Au/Ag solution concentration ratio increases through the leach circuit. In the CIP circuit, Au adsorption is more effective than Ag adsorption. The Au/Ag solution concentration ratio decreases from 10.0 to 1.0 as the slurry advances from CIP tank #1 to CIP tank #5, while Au/Ag ratio in the carbon increases from 3.2 to 15.3, as the carbon advances from CIP tank #5 to CIP tank #1. Silver is stripped more effectively than gold from the loaded carbon. The Au/Ag ratio in solution reaches 2.0 in the first 75,700 L of strip solution that pass through the loaded carbon; as the stripping process continues, the Au/Ag ratio in the strip solution increases. In the electrowinning circuit, the Au/Ag ratio in the spent electrowinning solution is significantly lower than that in the electrowinning feed, indicating that Au is more rapidly deposited onto the cathode than Ag.

Coal is deposited at a mine site in several thin seams which outcrop in rolling hills and dip at about 8° to the northeast. The deposit is located in the northeast area of the State of New Mexico in the Southwest of the United States. A drilling program was undertaken and was quite irregular. Not all of the seams appear in all of the drill holes. Some of the holes did not go deep enough, while others were drilled below the outcrop of some seams. Occasionally a seam would pinch out and not be seen in a drill hole. Also, the outcrops of the seams are buried in many places by several feet of alluvium. All of these factors make correlation of the seams between drill holes difficult. The drawing of cross sections in three directions and at many locations across the mining area have been necessary to assure the accuracy of the input data.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. During the twentieth century the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota has been the major source of iron ore for American steel mills. The Mesabi Range extends along an iron bearing outcrop known as the Biwabik formation. This outcrop is some 120 miles long and up to three miles wide. The formation is from 200 to 650 feet thick and dips 5 to 10 degrees to the southeast. The iron content of the original Biwabik formation was quite uniform, but much of this formation has been subjected to alteration. Thus major variations in iron content and mineral composition exist both laterally and vertically in the present Biwabik formation. The remaining unaltered iron formation includes the magnetic taconites which are commercially processed by Reserve Mining, Erie Mining, Eveleth Taconite, National Steel, Butler Taconite, and U.S. Steel. These six operations have a capacity of 32 million tons. per year of iron pellets and have produced approximately 170 million tons of pellets since 1956. Capacity for another 30 million tons per year of pellets is being considered by the industry for the next ten years. This increase will be obtained by construction of new plants and expansion of present operations. Thus by 1977, it is estimated that approximately 60 million tons per year of iron pellets will be produced from magnetic taconite on the Mesabi Range. The portions of the Biwabik formation subjected to intense alteration resulted in the direct shipping, wash and heavy media ores. Since 1892, 1.8 billion tons of direct shipping ore have been shipped from the Mesabi Range. This ore has been the major source of iron for American steel mills. In 1966, 12 million tons of direct shipping ore and 18 million tons of wash, jig, heavy media and other gravity concentrates were shipped from the Mesabi Range. These products generally have poorer physical and chemical properties than the iron pellets produced from magnetic taconite. It is predicted that the shipment of these materials will decrease from about 30 million tons in 1966 to 6 to 8 million tons in 1975. This decrease will be due to depletion of reserves and poor quality product.

INTRODUCTION The Alimak method of raising (Fig. 1) was intro¬duced in 1957. Because of its flexibility, economy, and speed, it soon became the most used system of raising in the world. With the same unit, raises of various areas, inclinations, and lengths can be driven. Air-motor¬-driven raise climbers normally are used in mines with short raises (Fig. 2). For longer raises electric or diesel-¬hydraulic drives are used. The Alimak raise climber is designed entirely in ac¬cordance with the instructions of the Swedish Board of Industrial Safety (Arbetarskyddsstyrelsen). There are good margins of safety concerning the breaking strength of the material and the raise climber comprises safety devices and features that practically eliminate the risks of accidents. The drive gear of air-driven climbers is equipped with an air-operated brake which is automatically activated when air for the motors is shut off. There is a safety device which activates automatically at overspeed and a speed-regulated brake for descent by gravity, by which the raise climber can be taken down to the bottom of the raise in case of cutoff of the air supply. The raise climber climbs along a pin rack welded to a guide rail which also comprises pipes for air and water. The guide. rail can be extended by using 1- or 2-m (3.2¬or 6.4-ft) sections as the driving progresses. Each guide rail section is bolted to the rock wall by special expan¬sion bolts of Alimak design. Men ride up to the face in the cage, traveling com¬fortably and easily while material is transported on the platform. There is no dangerous climbing up ladders. The men are well protected during ascent and arrive in good condition at the face. The greatest advantages of raise climber systems are flexibility and versatility. Prediction of blast fragmentation plays a key role for overall productivity of mines. In this study, a new multivariate analysis procedure for prediction of blast fragmentation is presented. Several blasts performed in various mines and rock formations worldwide were brought together and evaluated. An extensive blast database was created. Blast design parameters, the modulus of elasticity and in-situ block size were considered to perform multivariate analysis. A complete multivariate analysis procedure was applied in three steps. First, a hierarchical cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different groups of similarity. Two different groups were formed based on the elasticity modulus values. In the second step, group memberships were checked by discriminant analysis. The dominant parameters of the occurrence of the groups were determined. Also, discriminant analysis was used to determine the group membership of the respective blasts. As the last step, the multivariate regression analysis was applied to develop prediction equations for estimation of the mean particle size of muckpiles. Two different prediction equations were developed based on the rock stiffness. Validation of the proposed equations on various mines was performed. Prediction capability of the proposed models was found to be strong. The models are not complex and are suitable for practical use at mines.

Progressive improvements in crusher design, screening efficiency, and operating experience along with the downsizing of many taconite operations has resulted in the abilitv of some crushing plants to produce a substantially finer product. This finer product opens the possibility of replacing the rods in the rod mill with balls as is the current practice at Sydvaranger, Norway. If this replacement could be accomplished substantial savings associated with metal wear and the elimination of rod charging may be realized. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a mill charged with rods with the performance of the same mill charged with balls at the pilot scale. The first objective was to establish whether we could achieve the same throughput rate at the same mesh-of-grind in a mill in which the rod media has been replaced by balls. The second point was to determine whether the ball media would create a significant tramp oversize problem.

Zeolites are common secondary components of a variety of igneous rocks. However it is extremely rare to reach such abundances to form a rock. An unusual rock composed almost entirely of natrolite, a zeolite mineral, has been discovered ; in a mountainous terrain called the Kop mountain range in the eastern Turkey. In the region, country rocks are essentially metamorphic rocks. These unique rocks are resulted through metasomatic changes acted on microdioritic and andesitic parent rocks occurring generally as dikes and stocks in the country rocks consisting chiefly of serpentinized harzburgites. These metasomatic rocks are investigated with respect to their mineralogical, petrographical, and geochemical characteristics. These products consisting dominantly of natrolite are termed "natrolitite" and those containing additional pargasite, an amphibol mineral, are termed "pargasite-bearing natrolitite or pargasitic natrolitite ". The dikes and stocks show concentric zoning, each of which has distinct chemical and mineralogical compositions: Na2O and H2O contents show enrichment outward from the core to chill zones whereas, SiO2 and CaO show depletion. Mineralogically, plagioclase variety, abundance and chemistry change outwards from the center due to partial to complete replacement of natrolite: anorthite contents of plagioclases decrease outward, which is indicated by A1203 and CaO decrease and SiO2 and Na2O increase, showing inverse relationship with increasing natrolite content.

Fleet management systems (FMSs) as the pivotal part of any surface mining operation find it essential to evolve from conventional into intelligent systems because of both Mining 4.0 requirements and some shortcomings inherent in conventional methods. However, this novel transformation needs to be investigated technically and strategically. To this end, the previously published research works on intelligent FMSs are explored to track the latest status of these third generation frameworks within the surface mining context. Following that, their underlying models are compared in terms of five categories of allocation and dispatching features to pinpoint the technical gaps ignored. Having drawn the future lines of research, the present article then leverages the popular SWOT analysis method to outline the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with the advent of these intelligent FMSs in mines of future. By and large, the analysis indicates that advantages outweigh disadvantages. Solutions are offered to address the existing weaknesses and threats.

An orebody is a mining company's greatest asset; without it there can be no mine. Yet, by the very nature of the industry, orebodies are wasting assets whose progressive depletion must be balanced by continued discovery of new ore to enable both the industry to survive and the raw material demands of society to be satisfied. Although mineral exploration may be viewed as any activity which leads to the creation of investment opportunities in the mineral industry, ultimately new ore can only be generated through discovery. The process leading to discovery may involve a long chain of independent and interdependent events. It will almost always be repetitious and require the examination of many prospects or trials before the goal, a commercially successful discovery, is satisfied. Long term survival of a mining company through regular discovery of new ore, requires a continued commitment of funds and effort to mineral exploration.

The $528 million Toledo Waterways Initiative (TWI) was implemented by the City of Toledo in 2002 and completed in August 2020. Toledo is one of many US cities required to implement a Long-Term Control Plan (LTCP) but one of few to have completed its plan. TWI consists of three storage and conveyance tunnels, four below grade storage basins ranging from 4 to 36 million gallons (MG), miles of sewer separation and interceptor improvements, green infrastructure and other appurtenant structures to dramatically reduce combined sewer overflows to the Maumee River, Ottawa River and Swan Creek. All three rivers flow into Lake Erie. The City’s 180-year history as a Midwest shipping, manufacturing and transportation hub provided design engineers and contractors no shortage of unknown underground challenges to complete the projects. The City will begin its 5-year Post-Construction Compliance Monitoring in 2021 to satisfy the final LTCP requirement. A program overview and experience from tunnel and underground basin construction in urban areas with buried active and legacy infrastructure will be discussed.

"Tunneling and Underground works are unequivocally subject to a diversity of inherent uncertainties associated with the geotechnical, hydro-geological and environmental regime that surrounds them. On many occasions, these uncertainties can provoke loss events of considerable consequences. The present contribution elaborates on losses that the insurance market has suffered in the recent years, following a construction failure event. These losses are being considered and analysed on a quantitative basis through evaluation of cost related data, with explicit discretization of the applied construction methodology and of the subsequent developed failure type since both of which are considered of major importance. Given the identified persistence and regularity of some loss-contributing factors, recommendations are provided on the basis of a proactive risk engineering management approach that are envisaged to reinforce the understanding of project risks and alleviate the incurred insurance cost. 1 INTRODUCTION The underground construction sector has always been a very challenging area for all involved parties, including the insurance market. Main reason for that remains the uniqueness of the uncertainties sources and the subsequent inherent risks that the tunneling and underground projects are exposed to. In many instances, these risks materialize, leading to loss events with substantially high impact on reinstatement cost and incurred delays, which depending among others on the insurance coverage will have to be bared by the Insurance market. In the recent decades and as the tunneling industry boomed and expanded with many major and significant projects undertaken around the world, the insurance market was faced with additional challenges. Increased competition during tender coupled with the scale and complexity of the projects and politically driven decision making exerted pressure on the project timelines, completion dates and budget. The pressure for on-time or even early project completion- to avoid liquidated damages or achieve bonus payments, respectively- along with cost reduction efforts and the incentive for innovative failure events. That, in turn, put additional pressure on the Insurance market which had experienced a significant amount of losses with substantial cost. One of the triggered mitigation actions was the introduction of the Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (ITIG, 2006 & 2012; MunichRe 2006, Wannick, 2007, Spencer, 2008, Adeyemo, 2011)."

It highlights the significance of borehole sealing technology for efficient gas drainage. The study introduces a new inorganic retarding sealing material and investigates its properties, including stability, thermal stability, fluidity, and thixotropy. The material's diffusion performance in cracks is tested using a self-designed system. Field tests in a coal mine demonstrate the material's effectiveness in improving borehole sealing compared to traditional materials.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunneling is an ever-increasing prospect for underground construction, and, with each new tunnel bored, there are unknown elements. When boring through the earth, even extensive geotechnical baseline reports can miss fault lines, water inflows, squeezing ground, rock bursting and other types of extreme conditions. This article draws on the consider-able field service experience within Robbins to analyze successful methods of dealing with the most challenging conditions encountered. Many tunnel projects are located in areas with relatively poor access along the tunnel alignment and bored under extremely high overburden. These two factors often result in limited geological information. It would be reason-able to state that the deeper the tunnel, the greater the lev-el of uncertainties. When faced with these uncertainties everyone involved with the project including the owner, the contractor and the machine supplier must be prepared to tackle geological surprises. This article describes the problematic geological conditions and associated difficulties faced on three separate projects and the measures that were taken to overcome these difficulties.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of using a high-pressure roll mill (HPRM) to improve the separation efficiency of dolomite from apatite in downstream operations when treating high-dolomitic pebbles. High-dolomite samples from four phosphate mines were used for the test program. The research work plan included sample characterization studies; INSTRON tests to develop preliminary crushing data; high-pressure roll mill evaluations to determine crushing parameters, such as feed rates, rolls speed and gap, and applied torque, pressure and energy; and screen, microscopy, and flotation studies to assess dolomitelapatite separation efficiency. The results of the HPRM tests show that commercial products for all four mines can be obtained. Recoveries of 74-82% of the P2O5 and rejections of 46-83% of the MgO were reported with an specific energy consumption of 0.2-0.5 of that of a laboratory rod mill.

The Millenbach copper-zinc orebody is an ideal Canadian example of a stratabound base metal deposit in volcanic rocks. The mine, operated by Lake Dufault Divison, Falconbridge Copper Ltd. is located five miles north of the city of Noranda in northwestern Quebec. The deposit occurs within an Archean volcanic sequence which forms part of regional acidic volcanic center within the Abitibi greenstone belt. Preproduction ore reserves totalled 2,075,000 tons grading 3.5% copper, 3.6% zinc, 1.1 ounces per ton silver, and 0.02 ounces per ton gold. Stratabound lenses of massive sulphides together with underlying stringer sulphides are closely associated with a dome of quartz-feldspar porphyritic rhyolite approximately 3000 feet below surface. The paper describes the presently known geology of the deposit and includes documentation of sulphide mineralogy and textures as well as sulphide/ host rock relationships. The stratigraphy, petrography and chemistry of the volcanic host rocks are described with emphasis on the alteration intimately associated with the sulphide bodies. Although the volcanic stratigraphy is complex within the mine area, the presence of only low-grade metamorphism and the relative lack of structural deformation allow detailed interpretation of geological history. Presently recognized evidence strongly suggests that the sulphides were deposited at and near sea-floor, by hydrothermal solutions. The dome of porphyritic rhyolite appears to have been the most significant factor controlling sulphide localization.

This paper describes the 6, 000 tpd, three stage haulage system at the Ozark Lead Company's mine in southeastern Missouri. It details the methods and problems pertinent to the loading, hauling, sorting, crushing, storing and hoisting of waste rock and ores obtained from underground development headings and production areas. The Ozark Lead Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Kennecott Copper Corporation. Its mine is located nine miles south of Bunker in Reynolds County at the south end of the "New Lead Belt" mining district. Development started in May, 1964, by drilling a seven foot diameter (six foot cased), 1, 250 foot development-ventilation shaft. Drifting began in August, 1965, to obtain a bulk ore sample, to test ore continuity, and to drive two mine levels while the pre-grouted production shaft was being sunk. Over 7, 900 feet of 12 by 24 foot drifting was done from this small shaft. In March, 1966, a 20 foot diameter, three compartment, concrete lined production shaft was collared. It intersected existing development headings at a depth of 1, 195 feet in April, 1967, and was completed along with a concentrator and other facilities in June, 1968. Mine production began that month, with 5, 000 tpd reached in 1970.\

For compliance with the Hazard Communication Standard and other federal and state regulations, numerous minerals, chemicals and products need to be evaluated for crystalline silica content at a threshold of 0.1 %. The polymorphs of crystalline silica that can occur in chemical and mineral products are quartz, cristobalite and tridymite. Other natural, industrial and synthetic amorphous silicas and hydrates must be distinguished from these polymorphs to prevent over-regulation in the workplace and environment. A number of industrial silica products are composed of glasses, expanded perlite, diatomite, slags, and precipitated and fumed silica products. Amorphous silica hydrates used for industrial products, include opal (hydrated silica of biogenic or inorganic origin), perlite, pumice and tuffs. In addition, crystalline and amorphous silicate minerals and chemicals, abundant in nature and industrial products, must be distinguished from the polymorphs of crystalline silica.

The treatment of materials for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Sunshine Mining and Refining Company has developed hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials. At Sunshine, the industrial focus of these processes has been for the direct recovery of silver without cyanidation. However, recent work has indicated that these technologies can provide a means for treating complex, refractory gold concentrates. This will be the focus of this paper. The practice of pretreating ores and concentrates to make them more amenable to cyanidation is becoming more common. Several pretreatment options for sulfide concentrates containing gold include roasting, bio-leaching, direct pressure oxidation and nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation. The industrial use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation has been limited to the Sunshine refinery where its focus has been for the treatment of silver concentrates. Much of the reluctance, outside of Sunshine, to use this type of technology may be based on the perception that high costs are associated with using nitrogen species (e.g. nitric acid, sodium nitrite) to leach. Also, the use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation on an industrial scale is unfamiliar to most metallurgical professionals. A summary of pressure leaching processes which utilize nitrogen species as a catalyst is presented in Tables 1 and 2.

Natural graphite has been known for many centuries, having first been reported as a distinct mineral form by Gessner in 1565. At that time, graphite was used extensively as pencil "lead" because of the ease with which it marks paper. It is a black, unctuous material found as flakes, lumps, or needles in scattered locations throughout the world. The less crystalline, or "amorphous", natural graphites are thought to have been formed from coal under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The more crystalline varieties, such as those mined in Ceylon, probably were precipitated from molten solutions or were pyrolyzed from gaseous carbon compounds. Recognition of the good thermal and electrical conductivity of graphite, together with its highly refractory nature, led to an increasing number of appli¬cations for this material. Clay and pitch bonded natural graphite has been used in crucibles, refractories, foundry facings, and other high-temperature appli¬cations. These forms constitute the most important current uses for natural graphite in the United States. Other products containing natural graphite include batteries, lubricants, pencils, brake linings, etc.
