Recent research has shown that enhanced gravity separators provide the opportunity to effectively clean I mm x 37 micron coal. At Southern Illinois University, a detailed experimental program was performed on a continuous Falcon Concentrator, which was found to achieve separations at mass throughput capacity values in excess of 100 tonnes/hour. The apparent particle separation density for I mm x 73 micron coal was about 1.60 with relatively high efficiency (Ep = 0.12). Typical ash and sulfur rejection values of 85% and 70%, respectively, were achieved while recovering 85% of the combustible material. Metallurgical and efficiency data from the evaluation are presented in this publication.

INTRODUCTION The maximum recovery of cleaned coal at the required quality is of major concern to plant operators. However, the quantity and quality of products of coal cleaning, predicted by theoretical calculation based on washability studies and determined in the operation of actual commercial cleaning plants, will be different for each coal. Therefore, during the last half century, coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought methods for evaluating the technical and economical efficiency of separating coal in coal cleaning equipment and for predicting the quantity and quality of cleaned coal produced, as well as profit- ability for the entire plant. Many formulas have been proposed by investigators to evaluate the efficiency of various coal cleaning operations. Performance criteria in use today are capable of defining all of the important aspects of a given concentrating operation; however, each criterion has certain restrictions or limitations. It is important, therefore, to understand how such formulas can be used and the problems involved in their construction. Technical Measures of Equipment/Plant Performance Conventional measures for evaluating the performance of a preparation plant are generally the same as those used to evaluate equipment performance. Measures involving separation efficiencies are influenced by the following three broadly encompassing primary factors: (1) density composition of the feed coal, (2) design characteristics of the cleaning unit, and (3) relative density of the separation. Since separation efficiencies are dependent on factors involving the nature of the coal, they are termed dependent criteria and represent a very broad technical indicator of an individual process or plant performance. Performance measures known as independent criteria are influenced mainly by quantitative errors inherent in the design and operation of the processing equipment. Economic Measures of Plant Performance True assessment of coal cleaning methods require reference to economic measures such as profitability. During the years in which technical efficiency criteria for characterizing plant performance were being improved, coal preparation engineers were also seeking appropriate economic criteria to assess plant performance. Technical and economic effectiveness of plant performance are important parameters for coal preparation flowsheet design. Currently, its separation and extraction from Te-bearing materials face problems such as long flowsheets and high reagent consumption, giving rise to an urgent need to develop new methods for its recovery.

Two major tunnel projects with a combined value of about $US700 million have been recently completed in Sydney using both soft ground and hard rock Tunnel Boring Machines. The first of these and the main entry in Australia for the Year 2000 Olympics was the New Southern Railway. This is 10 km of mainly soft ground tunnel linking the Sydney’s International Airport with the Central Business District. The second tunnel was designed to alleviate major stormwater pollution of Sydney Harbour and involved construction of the Northside Storage Tunnel. This is19 km of hard rock tunnel at depths exceeding 90 m that connects many of the northern Sydney suburbs of Sydney with the North Head Ocean Outfall. Case studies of these projects describe the use of innovative geophysical technologies comprising gravity and seismic tomographic imaging with geotechnical testing at the feasibility and design stages. This approach minimised construction and financial risk by effectively quantifying the significant geological and hydrogeological issues along these tunnel routes that exerted major controls on these projects.

Very fine wet sizing of minerals such as kaolin, precipitated calcium carbonate, lime milk, and clay slip is a difficult process to achieve using standard vibrating screens. With particle sizes ranging in the sub-microns combined with the agglomerating tendencies of certain materials, screen blinding becomes a serious issue. Sizetec, Inc. has developed an innovative screening equipment to help solve this problem. The High Performer Screen uses powerful linear vibrations to help break apart agglomerated particles and prevent screen blinding. Optionally fitted with the Air Explosion Screen Cleaning System, compressed air can be periodically injected into the screen underflow chamber to clean the screen surface without the use of water sprays. This paper highlights some of the key features of the Sizetec High Performer Screen and describes typical performance that can be expected based on results from various trials conducted in the kaolin industries.

Lightweight aggregates are classified as those minerals, natural rock materials, rock-like products, and byproducts of manufacturing processes that are used as bulk fillers in lightweight structural concrete, concrete building blocks, precast structural units, road surfacing materials, plaster aggregates, and insulating fill. Other uses include architectural wall covers, suspended ceilings, soil conditioners, and other agricultural uses (Mason, 1989). One unusual agricultural use recently reported was for bedding on a crocodile farm on the south coast of Natal. It seems that female crocodiles became upset because there was no vermiculite in which to lay their eggs due to the late arrival of a consignment of vermiculite. The vermiculite was being used as a substitute for river sand to nest crocodile eggs (Griffiths, 1989). The various lightweight aggregate materials may be classified into four groups as follows: 1. Natural Lightweight Aggregate Materials-prepared by crushing and sizing natural rock materials, such as pumice, scoria, tuff, breccia, and volcanic cinders. 2. Manufactured Structural Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by pyroprocessing shale, clay, or slate in rotary kilns or on traveling grate sintering machines. 3. Byproduct Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by crushing and sizing foamed and granulated slag, cinders, and coke breeze. This group of lightweight materials, with the exception of slag, has become less significant and will not be discussed in this chapter. Other lightweight aggregates are beginning to appear in the marketplace. Some are the result of manufacturing processes on industrial byproducts and/or waste products, such as fly ash and incinerator residue (Bigner, 1992). 4. Manufactured Insulating Ultralightweight Aggregates-pre- pared by pyroprocessing ground vermiculite, perlite, and diatomite. The application of diatomite in brick and in extruded and aggregate forms has declined in recent years (Kadey, 1983) and will not be considered in this chapter. Lightweight aggregates for structural concrete and concrete masonry units, according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (1986) consist of "aggregates of low density used to produce lightweight concrete, including: pumice, scoria, volcanic cinders, tuff and diatomite; expanded shale, clay, slate, perlite, vermiculite or slag; and end products of coal or coal combustion" (Mason, 1989). Lightweight aggregates are distinguished from other mineral aggregate materials by their lighter unit weights-1 281 to 1 602 kg/m3 or less for loosely packed lightweight aggregates-as com- pared to 2 002 kg/m3 or more for crushed stone, sand, gravel, air-cooled slag, and other common mineral aggregates. The specific gravities of these lightweight aggregates are also used to classify them for use in concrete; they range from the extremely light materials, used for insulative and non-structural concrete to expanded shale, clay, slate, and slags used for structural concrete. Vermiculite and perlite are sometimes referred to as super light- weights. Insulating concrete (non-load bearing) weighing as little as 240 kg/m3 can be made with these aggregates. Natural aggregates such as pumice, pumicite, and scoria are normally made into concrete weighing about 400 to 480 kg/m3. Expanded shale, clay, and slate produced in a rotary kiln make structural concrete ranging from 1 201 to 1 842 kg/m3. Expanded shale and clay produced by sintering make concrete that ranges from 1 442 to 1 922 kg/m3. Air-cooled slag produces concrete ranging from 2 162 to 2 403 kg/m3. The low density lightweight aggregates are used primarily for insulating purposes. They have relatively low compressive strength. The middle density aggregates are used for insulation and for fill. Those at the upper end develop excellent compressive strength and are used in many structural applications (Anon., 1971). In recent years, the production of lightweight aggregates in the United States for all uses (including insulation and construction materials) has averaged about 19 Mtpy (Table 1). The production and consumption of lightweight aggregate is closely tied to the fortunes of the construction industry and the need to construct energy efficient buildings. Recent years have seen the production of lightweight aggregate approach the levels of the early 1970s. The period of 1979 to 1981 was a low point in production levels. The low levels of production were caused by significantly higher plant energy costs due to the large amounts of fuel and energy used in the production of most types of lightweight aggregate. Lower levels of construction activity also affect production levels. This chapter focuses on the use of natural lightweight aggregates and manufactured insulating ultralightweight aggregates, and on both the production and use of manufactured structural light- weight aggregates. Some additional comments are made on byproduct materials. Separate commodity chapters on vermiculite, perlite, pumice, and volcanic cinders are elsewhere in the volume. Discussion of the commodities covered elsewhere in the book will be limited to observations on their utilization and relation to other lightweight aggregate materials.

The United States Gypsum Company operation at Plaster City, in Imperial County, California, consists of the largest gypsum quarry in the United States, a company-owned, narrow-gauge railroad and wallboard and plaster manufacturing facilities. A variety of gypsum products, including many types of wallboard, construction plasters, portland cement setting agent, and agricultural gypsum are manufactured. Gypsum is quarried from the Miocene age Fish Creek Gypsum. Evaporite minerals were deposited in a clastic-rich sabkha environment along the margin of a small embayment in the Salton Trough. The Salton Trough is a major regional structure that formed by rifting and transform faulting along the Elsinore, San Jacinto, and San Andreas fault zones. Sedimentary basins were formed between tilted fault blocks. The basins were filled by prograding alluvial fans, basin margin sabkha and marine sediments, and deltaic deposits from the Colorado River. Gypsum is exposed in the quarry on rounded hills with 250-300 feet of relief. The evaporites are up to 200 feet thick and average 125 feet in thickness. Anhydrite commonly occurs in the lower part of the evaporites under the crests of hills and beneath thick alluvial cover.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

"Tests were conducted to determine properties of four foam agents for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. Foam has been tried in underground mining in the past for dust control and is currently being reconsidered for use in underground coal longwall operations in order to help those operations comply with the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s lower coal mine respirable dust standard of 1.5 mg/m3. Foams were generated using two different methods. One method used compressed air and water pressure to generate foam, while the other method used low-pressure air generated by a blower and water pressure using a foam generator developed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Foam property tests, consisting of a foam expansion ratio test and a water drainage test, were conducted to classify foams. Compressed-air-generated foams tended to have low expansion ratios, from 10 to 19, with high water drainage. Blower-air-generated foams had higher foam expansion ratios, from 30 to 60, with lower water drainage. Foams produced within these ranges of expansion ratios are stable and potentially suitable for dust control. The test results eliminated two foam agents for future testing because they had poor expansion ratios. The remaining two foam agents seem to have properties adequate for dust control. These material property tests can be used to classify foams for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. IntroductionAbout one-half of U.S. underground coal is produced by longwall mining, which allows for mining high volumes of coal but generates significant amounts of coal mine dust. This can lead to overexposures for longwall miners and possibly occupational respiratory diseases, including black lung and silicosis, which have no cure and can be disabling or fatal. The only method to avoid these occupational illnesses is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit for respirable coal mine dust is 1.5 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities (Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2015a). When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain average concentrations at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present (MSHA, 2015b)."

Laboratory testing for flotation circuit design is carried out on a routine basis in a large number of lab- oratories throughout the world. Usually a sample of ore, assumed to be characteristic of the material to be processed in a future plant, having a mass of the order of a few kilograms, is ground in a batch ball or rod mill, in the presence of water and some re- agents (for pH control, etc. .. ); after dilution to the adequate solid concentration, the resulting slurry is transferred into a laboratory batch flotation machine, having a volume which can vary from 0.5 to 8 10 -3m3. Various types of machines are in common use, manufactured by the same companies that market industrial size flotation machines. The operation of flotation in the laboratory is carried out by an experienced technician, who uses parameters such as impeller rotation speed, air flowrate addition, froth height, froth removal rate, in conjonction with reagent addition sequence, to "test" the ore. After flotation, the froth products ("concentrates"), and the solids remaining in the cell are filtered, dried, and analyzed for the various elements of interest. For flotation circuit design, a kinetic test is usually carried out, in which the froth products obtained at various times are collected to assess the time response of the ore in the laboratory machine with the combination of reagents used. Although this description is rather sketchy, it enables to outline some of the major difficulties in using laboratory data for flotation circuit design: 1. ore sample representatively 2. feed preparation procedure (laboratory compared to industrial scale) 3. laboratory procedures (type of ma- chine, type of operation, experimental errors. . . ) 4. flotation machine scale-up 5. flotation kinetic scale-up 6. flotation circuit design using laboratory data These various points will be discussed in the present paper, in order to stress the problem areas as well as possible solutions. The NMBGMR is slowly converting historical data into a relational database using Microsoft Access 97. The purpose of this database is to provide data on districts, mines, and mills in New Mexico to government agencies, public organizations, industry, and citizens to make informed decisions about resource development, resource management, water supplies, environmental impacts, hazard assessment, and waste disposal. Once the data are entered into the database with locations, the data can easily be converted to GIS format for displaying as different map layers.

Experiments conducted with limestone dusts and dolomitic marble dusts have indicated that when rock dust is wetted and subsequently dried, it becomes a solid, non-dispersible cake. However, in order to be effectively inert a coal dust explosion, rock dust must be able to disperse as individual particles to air. To counteract this, rock dust manufacturers created treated rock dusts that will resist caking after moisture exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted a series of laboratory-scale experiments on four base rock dusts and their treated counterparts to assess the effectiveness of various anticaking additives after being exposed tomoisture and then dried. The dusts were exposed tomoisture using humidity cabinets having a high relative humidity (99% RH) and by also exposing the rock dust bed to water through bottom wicking. The dusts were then evaluated for dispersibility after drying using the NIOSH-designed dust dispersion chamber. The anti-caking additives were different concentrations of stearic acid, oleic acid, and xylene-based surfactants. All results were compared to a reference rock dust used to conduct large-scale experiments in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM), Fairchance, PA. When the untreated dusts were dried after exposure to moisture for 1 day, no dispersion was measured. However, rock dusts treated with anti-caking agents were readily dispersible even after exposure to moisture for 6 months. This report details the analysis and characterization of anticaking additives using the NIOSH-designed dispersion chamber and the 20-L explosion test chamber.

THE FUTUREGEN CLEAN Coal project will be the recipient of $1 billion worth of federal stimulus money by way of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which announced the commitment to the project. The money is expected to kick off years of further work that could finally see the project completed. One of the companies involved, Ameren Corp., said the $1.2 billion project ? which will include some private funding ? still has a number of hurdles to clear.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Cold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 9 million tons of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 1.0 million tons per year. Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, mineable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

Rio Tinto Minera, S.A. operates in Southern Spain, at one of the most ancient mining sites in the world, using advanced computerised mine planning. This paper describes the development and application of the mine planning systems to the copper and gold/silver operations. It briefly covers the hardware configuration, and the advantages and improvements in mine planning achieved. The system's application started with the long term mine planning of Cerro Colorado (open pit) copper mine and was gradually extended to cater for the medium and short term planning requirements of the other operations of the Company. The base of the system is a mineral inventory established by the combined use of the geology and geostatistical methods, and compatible with the mine planning requirements. The planning system has three major components: one used for open pit design and long term mine planning, another used for blast evaluation and finally one used for short term mine planning. Recently, a fourth component has been added to the system for reconciliation between predicted and actual tonnages and grades. There is common data file transfer throughout the system.

The study investigates the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain (CAC) in reducing respirable dust exposure for shuttle car and ramcar operators in underground coal mining. Field testing showed that the CAC reduced dust exposure by 11-34% overall and by 57-65% during ramcar loading by the continuous miner. These results demonstrate the CAC’s potential as a significant dust control device.

The full importance of tailings disposal is yet to be realized by the mining industry, but our awareness of its present and future implications is growing faster, perhaps, than any single phase of ore processing. Few engineers can look very far into the future because of the complexity of the problems that may confront us if we project from the general indifference of past years through what we are already being expected to correct in existing operations, to confrontations with new statutes and an awakened public in any new plants hence- forth. The mistakes of the past have not been limited to the United States nor even to other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Indeed, all continents and subcontinents have suffered from myopia in releasing the tailings without retaining responsibility. However, the US as one of the world's great leaders in technology has a particularly unimpressive record. It may be safely generalized that the degree of control applied to the tailings of a milling operation has depended upon several factors more important than national boundaries. Thus in arid and semiarid climates no incentive was needed other than the scarcity of water to create a permanent and stable lodgment for mill tailings. On the other hand. where water has been plentiful. the temptation to let the tailings run into a river or lake or ocean (at least at certain times of the year) was often irresistible. So we find that modem tailings disposal in the southwest deserts of this country, with one or two notable exceptions where very serious breaks seem to occur at regular intervals, is satisfactory according to the standards of the 195QF and 1960s. while in various operations in Idaho, Michigan, western Colorado. Newfoundland, and elsewhere the record has been less praiseworthy. In the same way, cyanide plants which did not concern themselves about leakage, seepage, spillage, or wastage of tailings pulps with solutions containing toxic levels of free or combined cyanide soon heard a demand for better control. In consequence the industry has seen a growing use of cyanide regeneration of tailings or wash solutions, elimination of leakage, and careful structuring of tailing dams. The chemical and thermal qualities of tailing waters have occasionally been a spur to good tailings management. Some tailings disposal problems for example, the southeastern Florida phosphate clays and the Bayer red muds-have been given the intensive study they merited, but not always with much success.

This paper presents in detail the procedures followed and the results obtained in order to determine the stiffness parameters of the calcareous marls found in the lignite mines in Ptolemais, Northern Greece. Triaxial tests were performed on representative samples of the inner burden marl and the marl which underlies the lignite bearing series of the region. The tests were conducted under drained conditions, with controlled loading (including an unloading-reloading loop), while the axial strain was measured externally as well as with displacement transducers mounted directly on the specimen (Hall Effect sensors). The geotechnical parameters obtained (i.e., cohesion, angle of friction, stiffness modulus, stress-strain relationship), were subsequently used for simulating the triaxial testing with the Plaxis finite element software. Simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The resulting material model can then be applied to modeling the mobility that is expressed during the excavation of the open pit mines.

Thank you, Don Gentry, for your generous introduction. It is not adequate simply to say that I appreciate very much the vote of the Award Committee putting forth my name as the winner of the 1992 Daniel C. Jackling Award. To look at the list of previous Jackling Award winners is a humbling experience. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration has been blessed with some exceptional members over the years, and I feel privileged indeed to be included among the Jackling Award winners. During the years of my education at Penn State, my field of specialization was mining engineering, with particular emphasis in my master's and Ph.D. work on rock mechanics. But my career has not been quite so tightly focused as that. I have been involved with coal mining in all its variety - its technical aspects, both theory and practice; and its business side, dealing with management and labor, accountants and lawyers, politicians and environmentalists. And I have also been involved with related fields - construction; exploration; barges, railroads, ships and docks; supply houses; the coke business; you name it. Coming from that practical background, I believe it is most appropriate that I talk with you today about some practical matters. But I will not advise you today how to mine coal or protect roof in a hard-rock mine. You fellows know how to do that. The practical matters that I have in mind relate to policy - national policy. I will acknowledge immediately that national policy is often much less than practical, but bear with me as we explore the subject together. I am reminded of a supervisor I had early in my career. He very strongly advised me, back in 1961, to "get involved in the political process," for without objectivity injected into our national policy making, we will become a second-rate economic power. I have selected as the subject of my remarks today, "Coal and the de facto National Energy Policy." There is an energy policy relating to coal, a de facto one, and it's the one we see as a result of regulation, attitudes and culture from our nation's capital. This de facto policy is the one we in the coal business live with every business day. My thesis is very simple - Coal is, in fact, a vital part of our national energy policy and will remain so, as a practical matter, no matter what politicians may do to us, or not do to us. Coal will prevail - that will be the happy ending to my story in which, of course, we are the good guys in the black hard hats. But first, I must flesh out the plot with some other characters and with some threatening activities. There are five main characters in my story: in order of appearance - Perpetual Politics, Rampant Regulation, Selective Science, Electrification and Confident Coal. The time: the present. Perpetual Politics is always a threat to coal. When you cross the Capital Beltway into Washington, D.C., check your wallet and your gold fillings, because you're not likely to run into any friends. Franklin Industrial Minerals operates several mines/quarries, including two room and pillar underground mines. Both of these mines are operated as multiple level room and pillar including heading and bench operations on one or both of the levels. This paper focuses on Franklin’s Crab Orchard, Tennessee mine, which produces both high purity chemical grade limestone and crushed stone for construction applications. The high purity chemical specifications for the chemical grade limestone and filler/extender applications are inconsistent with the non-chemical rock being produced to supply the crushed stone market. As a consequence Franklin has developed a unique mine plan and operation to maintain both product balance and a safe and stable working environment.
