As is usual when preparing for this type of occasion, I looked back at the subjects covered by my predecessors when they assumed the presidency of this Institute. You will appreciate that, in the eighty odd years since the Institute was founded, the diversity of subjects has been very great. In almost all cases it is quite natural that the speaker should have chosen a topic of special interest to him and one in which he was particularly knowledgeable.

The above paper is an important contribution to the field of physicochemical studies in ferromanganese production. The authors are to be congratulated on the well planned and competently executed experimental work and on the interpretation of the data. Although the paper is essentially descriptive, the results lend themselves to thermodynamic interpretation (but in such a complex system as that studied this cannot be done rigorously), as well as to an examination of the probable reduction mechanisms that operate at various stages.

Unbridled mining operations can have a serious negative impact on the surroundings. With the recent increased awareness of the need for environmental conservation and the resulting advances in environmental control, the mine planner has new tools at his disposal for the successful implementation of mining projects while avoiding negative environmental effects. This paper discusses the environmental strategies adopted in the planning and commissioning of a trial underground coal mine. The minimization of negative environmental effects is demonstrated and, where applicable, environmental benefits are examined.

After defining activated carbon, the author describes its structure and outlines the physical characteristics distinguishing one type of activated carbon from another. The adsorptive properties of these carbons, the raw materials used, and the manufacturing processes-chemical activation, and physical or thermal activation-are outlined. The high-temperature thermal route (which is the most important for the products employed in gold recovery) using coconut shells or coal as the raw material is then discussed In some detail.

The paper discusses the introduction of blindhole boring on the South African gold mines of Anglo American Corporation. It covers the boring trials conducted, and outlines the progress made in the development of blindhole borers. The operating costs, and performances, of the latest 1,52 m diameter borer are given. Future trends and requirements In the application and design of blindhole borers are discussed, as well as factors that are of importance in the design of future machines.

The modelling, simulation, and design of processes for the recovery of gold from solution by absorption on carbon require the combination of a suitable rate expression with a description of the flow conflguration of the system. By the use of a suitable rate expression from the literature, methods are presented for the design of multi-stage countercurrent absorption systems corresponding to the commonly used carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-column contacting systems. The sensitivity of the recovery to various design parameters is illustrated. These results have important implications in the choice and design of equipment.

Exceptionally low yields in the coking-coal fields of the Soutpansberg area in the northern Transvaal, are taxing the skill and ingenuity of preparation engineers. The coals are highly intergrown, and a series of crushing and washing steps may be required to extract the maximum usable tonnage. In addition, novel preparation techniques may have to be employed. This paper, which is a case study of work recently undertaken, gives a general account of raw coal properties, emphasizing those related to maximum recoveries, and outlines the steps involved in the design of appropriate flow sheets based on laboratory studies.

The need for the more accurate measurement of blasting results has increased substantially with the proliferation of the types of explosives available to mining operations in South Africa. The primary object of blasting is the production of broken rock of a specific size distribution. A method for the measurement of size distribution, more popularly known as fragmentation, is being developed at Sishen Iron Ore Mine, and the object of this paper is to describe the method briefly and so encourage an exchange of views on reliable methods. Once the fragmentation of broken rock can be assessed reliably, meaningful conclusions can be drawn from blasting trials. It will then be possible for equipment productivity to be related to muckpile properties, with the accompanying advantages.

The pattern of mining-induced fractures ahead of stope faces in deep-level gold mines, as revealed by petroscopic observations, is described. It is shown that there are zones of fractured and unfractured rock ahead of the face, which are about I m wide and continue as discrete entities for at least 12 m parallel to the face and at least 5 m vertically. These zones do not form continuously as mining progresses, but develop from time to time, leaving a solid zone between the fractured zones. The maximum depth of fracturing ahead of the face depends on the rate of energy release.

INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. For some years the Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa has been engaged in the development and application of computer programmes to aid in the solution of rock mechanics problems. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce some of the programmes having general applicability. A system capable of predicting stresses and displacements induced by large-scale tabular excavations is discussed. A finite element programme especially designed for handling layered continuum problems, and which is being used extensively has been supplemented by an automatic mesh generation facility that reduces problem preparation times considerably. Some typical applications of these programmes are described. An entirely new approach, potentially capable of performing linear three-dimensional continuum analysis at practical cost is introduced.

Considerable effort is currently directed towards the development of non-explosive mining methods with the potential to allow continuous mining in narrow reef conditions. Besides improving productivity, continuous mining results in concentrated mining which has a significant impact on reducing infrastructure costs. CSIR: Miningtek recognized the potential of mini-disc cutters in a long or short wall application for selective hard rock mining in 1999. EEA was chartered to build a 780 mm diameter by 800 mm deep drum cutter head. While EEA designed and built the head, CSIR designed and built the drive mechanism and chassis for the trial machine. After assembly and shop testing at CSIR’s facility, the machine was shipped to a platinum mine for trials. This paper traces the development of mini-disc cutters and their application in South Africa.

As the grade of the gold (head grade) in the ore supplied to a reduction plants falls, the efficiency of recovery of the metal drops. This is not simply due to a fixed grade lost in the residue, since the residue grade is itself a function of the head grade. A multi-disciplinary approach was used in the construction of a model to represent the relationship between head grade and recovery efficiency. The model is a physicochemical one based on (i) the reaction characteristics of cyanidation, (ii) the milled-ore selection characteristics of gravity concentration, and (iii) the nearly log normal distribution of gold grades and particle sizes in ore reserves. The model was used to set sound target levels for recovery efficiency for a given head grade at a given plant, against which the performances of the plant equipment can be judged for control purposes.

Coalbrook Collieries has produced approximately 2 million tons of coal by retreat longwalling since April 1976. Strata control. support. stone intrusions. coal conveyance, and the inflow of goaf and water between the face supports have been the major operational problems experienced to date. The progressive percentage availability of the total system (moves between panels excluded) for the first three panels mined was 40 per cent. Satisfactory solutions have been evolved for these problems. and the availability in the present panel (fourth panel) has increased to approximately 60 per cent. It is envisaged that longwalling will become the most economical method of ensuring optimum heat values, greater recovery. and reduced geographic expansion. as well as safer roof conditions. at Coal brook.

Two detonation models, IDeX for ideal VOD and CPeX for non-ideal VOD, were used to predict the velocities of detonation (VOD) of five explosives: ANFO, a bulk emulsion, and three repumpable emulsions (R100 Gold, R100 Diamond, and R105). The theoretical VODs were compared with the in-hole VODs of the explosives, and the predicted and actual values were found to be within experimental error for ANFO and the bulk emulsion. The results were not consistent for the repumpable emulsions. The discrepancies can be explained as being due to variations in mining and loading practices. The results show that the detonation models can be effective tools in predicting the behaviour of explosives in different diameters and rock confinements, provided that the user is aware of the factors that can affect the optimal usage of explosives and equipment.

Personnel management has undergone a remarkable change over the course of the past ten years. Personnel departments have played an increasingly important role, which today requires highly trained people and cannot be adequately served by the lesser qualified officials of yesteryear. Changes in the mining industry that stem from the demand for skilled labour to keep pace with technological developments and the mechanization of mines today demand that emphasis should be placed on the maximum utilization of manpower. Maximum utilization of manpower calls for more scientific and effective methods of recruiting, selecting, training, and placing workers so as to offer them the best opportunities for development and promotion, which naturally ensure a minimum labour turnover and eliminate labour unrest. This can be achieved only if well-qualified and properly trained personnel administrators are prepared to accept the challenge and apply themselves purposefully by assisting line mangement with the attainment of the company's corporate objectives.

This paper presents an integrated pipeline transport system for thickened coal sludge, which combines pretreatment and pipeline transport with combustion techniques of thickened coal sludge. The pipeline can transport thickened coal sludge with a sufficiently high solids content (about72%?77%) and high apparent viscosity (about 1 000Pa?S?3,000 Pa?S) directly by pipeline having neither use for water nor an addition agent. The transport distance can be as high as 1 000 metres. In particular, the operating principles, key equipment and technical parameters of this integrated system are examined in this paper. The integrated system effectively causes no pollution to the environment because it is completely sealed, and conserves energy over traditional conveyer designs. Although it is often said that South Africa does not have suitable deposits, or the potential to develop mines on a small scale, a recent survey by the Chamber of Mines1 showed that, out of a sample of 641 producers, 41 per cent had between 10 and 19 employees, and a further 29 per cent had between 20 and 29 employees. This goes to show that minerals-related small, medium, and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) do exist, and can play an important role in the development of rural industries in South Africa. Nchaka Moloi of the Department for Mineral and Energy Affairs defined the various categories of SMMEsas shown in Table I2. An enterprise could be placed in a certain category as long as two of the variables, employees, capex or production applied.
