Federal Regulations require MESA to regulate the exposure of workers to inhalation hazards in the surface work areas of coal mining and processing operations. (1) The purposes of this study are listed below: 1. Determination of candidate inhalation contaminants for surface work areas of coal mining and processing operations. 2. Selection of appropriate sampling and analytical methods. 3. Performance of qualitative surveys of 56 representative coal mining and processing facilities. 4. Preparation of handbook to provide guidance for inspectors sampling for these contaminants. This report describes the work which was done to accumulate the information which was used in preparing the inspector's handbook. Specifically, this report contains descriptions of the surveys which were performed, analytical results obtained from these surveys, findings and conclusions, and recommendations for additional research.

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. The Bohemia mining district is a small but intensely mineralized area in western Oregon . For its size , it has made a substantial although somewhat sporadic production of gold throughout a long period of years . The veins also contain lead, zinc , and copper, but in the past these metals have not been recovered in important amounts . In reviewing the progress of mining activity in the district , an effort has been made to gather under one cover all available information on former operations , including methods of mining , production, and geology pertinent to the ore deposits , problems encountered, and other factual data that may affect future mining in the district . A special effort has been made to assemble as many maps of former workings as possible in order that these may be preserved and readily available to assist in future exploration. The data presented herein are based on brief reconnaissance examinations made during several weeks spent in the field in September 1946. These are supplemented by information obtained from various individuals actively or formerly connected with operations in the district . Only the principal properties and several of the more outstanding prospects were actually examined. Many of the older workings were inaccessible.

The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which includes tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, increased about 9% in 1988. In the case of emery, the increase was due to an increase in unit value of the material produced. The increase in the value of garnet and staurolite production was simply the result of an increase in the quantity of materials produced. However, special silica stone experienced both an increase in unit value and quantity produced. The nonmetallic manufactured abrasives industry, which includes only silicon carbide and fused aluminum oxide in the reported statistics, enjoyed the best production year since 1981 in terms of total quantity produced. Production increased 22% in quantity and 16% in value com-pared with those of 1987.

Law of the Sea. - The Ninth Session of the Law of the Sea Conference resumed July 28 at Geneva and will run for 5 weeks. The 160-nation Conference began in 1973. Two of the major factors to be discussed are the transfer of technology to the UN-controlled Enterprise or mining authority, and how the 36-member Council will make decisions. As the session completed its third week, delegates expressed little hope of completing a treaty text this year. There was a feeling, though, that substantive issues might be settled so that a treaty text can be completed next year. The Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act signed by the President on June 28, provides an interim regulatory procedure for ocean mining activities conducted by U.S. nationals that may be superseded by a law of the sea treaty.

This report is a comprehensive summary of the results of the propagation measurements program conducted for the US Bureau of Mines under Contract H0366028. Data was gathered in the MF frequency range from a cross sample of six mines representative of the industry having typical wireless requirements. From the raw data which was gathered, a logical method of data reduction is presented which culminates in a set of average attenuation characteristics for all mines visited. These characteristics define a typical MF wireless system when the communication range requirements are known. Direct through-the-earth propagation and the range enhancement mechanism due to coupling on and off conductors are evaluated and related to the planning of a typical wireless MF communications system.

"The lightness and relatively high strength per unit weight of certain magnesium alloys have interested designing engineers for many years. Ever since the noted investigator Bunsen3/ first produced the element by electrolysis of the fused chloride in 1852, utilization of this light metal has been considered. Magnesium is widely distributed over the earth's surface in high-grade as well as low-grade deposits; it occupies eighth place in the list of elements arranged in order of their decreasing abundance, as there is 2.24 percent magnesium in the earth's lithosphere. Even though the element is distributed widely in the form of relatively insoluble: minerals and also as soluble salts in sea water and spring water, as well as being an indispensable constituent of plants and animals, the technology of magnesium was slow development. This slowness of development was first caused by confusion or the part of the early investigators who thought that magnesia, magnesite, magnetite, and the pyrolusite-type manganese ores were compounds of the same metal. At one time the metal that we now know as manganese was called magnesium, and magnesium was called either magnium or talcium. In addition to this coon, the chemical activity of the metal, especially at high temperatures, created problems that are still difficult to solve.With the advance of science in all branches, .methods for -he production of magnesium were developed. The methods first used for producing the element were: (1) reduction of magnesium salts with alkali metals,4/ (2) electrolysis of aqueous solutions of magnesium salts, and (3) electrolysis of fused magnesiun salts.The first attempts to produce magnesium by the carbothermal reduction of magnesia were failures as sufficient thermodynamic knowledge concerning the reversibility of the reaction between magnesia and carbon was not at hand. As the igneous electrolytic Method for making the element was more easily controlled than the others and. yielded more metal per unit of energy, considerable work was expended on the improvement of this process. The work in this field paralled that on the electroreduction of aluminum and the alkali metals. For several years the entire magnesium industry was dependent on this igneous electrolysis process for its supply of the metal, but as demand for the metal increased and more scientific knowledge was available, other processes were developed. Today magnesium is produced by the electrolysis of molton magnesium chloride electrolytes, the carbothermal reduction of magnesia, in arc furnaces followed by shock cooling of the furnace gases by a coin inert atmosphere, and the silicothermal reduction of calcined dolomite in stainless steel retorts."

During the past few years great progress has been made in the United States toward safer, more efficient, and more economical tunneling methods. This advance is partly due, no doubt, to the recent increase in the number of tunnels and adits driven for devel- oping and draining mines and transporting ore. The Bureau of Mines during 1911 and 1912 made a special examination of this phase of mining operations, in connection with an investigation of mining methods and means for preventing accidents. The details especially studied were the provisions for the safety of employees, the kinds of equipment, the methods of driving, and the costs of con- struction. The results and conclusions obtained from that investi- gation are discussed and summarized in this bulletin. Up-to-date information concerning tunneling methods is difficult to obtain. There are few books on the subject; and much of the material they contain, although interesting and of value historically, is now obsolete. The engineering periodicals, it is true, endeavor to keep abreast of the times, and several in nearly every issue present some article bearing upon tunnel work. But the very multiplicity of these articles prevents one from reading them all, and the foreman or superintendent in charge of a tunnel, or the mining engineer designing one, and especially the business man financing the project, has no time for a lengthy search after scattered articles in order to determine the present status of tunnel work. Then, too, knowledge of new methods travels slowly. Valuable inventions and improve- ments in tunneling as well as in all the other industries frequently remain in the notebook of the investigator, or as theses are buried in university libraries, or are published only in journals of small scien- tific societies. New tunneling methods and equipment that are prov- ing safe, efficient, and economical may be totally unknown outside the district in which they originate. This paper, based on a special examination both in the field and in engineering literature, is in- tended to supply data concerning modern and recent tunneling practice in the United States, and to make suggestions that, it is hoped, will result in a saving to the mining industry of energy, capital, and life.

Failure of the mine floor supporting coal pillars frequently occurs when the subcoal strata include "underclays" or other low strength strata. The failure process has been studied to define the response of these materials to applied coal pillar loads and to determine the applicability of bearing capacity analysis to evaluate unsafe conditions. The study has been accomplished through an investigation of both the intact and insitu geotechnical properties of the subcoal strata and through the installation of floor movement monitoring instrumentation. The results of these studies have indicated that both the shear strength of the underclay and the stratigraphy of the subcoal strata must be considered in the analysis. The shear strength was the major controlling factor determining the ultimate load carrying ability of the materials, but the thickness and stratigraphic position of the weak layers influenced the mechanism of the failure process. The methods of bearing capacity analysis were used to define pillar stability that included provisions for taking into consideration a two-layer system. Conditions assumed for a coal mine where a weak underclay overlies firmer strata. The results of the analysis compared very well with observed mine conditions, indicating marginal conditions in areas of the mine which later experienced pillar support failure. In addition, a "heave factor" was derived to predict potentially unstable floor conditions in the mines studied in detail.

The value of processed materials of mineral origin was estimated to have exceeded $310 billion in 1990. U.S. raw nonfuel minerals mine production in 1990 was estimated at $33 billion, a 3.1 % increase over that of 1989. The value of minerals production increased in all but 3 of the last 30 years. The metals component of production value has fluctuated much more than the industrial minerals component. This reflects the greater volatility of metal prices. In 1990, total employment in metal mining continued the increase that began in 1987. This growth was partially offset by a slight decline in employment in industrial mineral mining, resulting in an overall in-crease of 1.1 % to 179,100 in 1990. Continuing high (by historical standards) metal prices led to expansions at some mines, as well as opening or reopening of additional mines, resulting in increased employment.

This paper is one of r series published by the Bureau of Mines dealing with the mineral resources of western South Dakota. The mining of pegmatite minerals is described mainly from the standpoint of the feldspar industry, as most of the other .pegmatite minerals produced are recovered as byproducts from the mining of feldspar. Feldspar is shipped from the Black Hills by three companies, all operating in the southern Hills. Because the pegmatites of the northern Hills, represented by tae Tinton area, have been described in other papers3/ of this series, the present paper is confined to the pegmatite dikes of the southern Black Hills. Emphasis is placed upon the current activity in pegmatite mining; little attention is given to the history of many famous mines in the district, and information concerning them may be obtained by consulting resorts cited in the bibliography. The field work was carried on from July 28 to October 15, 1938. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The geology of the Black Hills has been studied almost continuously during the last half century. A wealth of literature has attempted to explain the geology and mineralogy of the pegmatite dikes of this region. Research objectives were to determine the reasons for erratic behavior of semisilica horizontal zinc retorts in service; to investigate potential corrective measures including the possible utilization of more refractory materials in the retort body; and to delineate laboratory tests suitable for process control in the manufacture of retorts. Correlation of laboratory test results and data supplied by the cooperating smelters indicated that structural failures due to thermal shock and laminations in the retort body are largely responsible for the erratic behavior of horizontal zinc retorts in service. The most promising modifications made in the retort body and evaluated on a laboratory scale included finer grinding of the plastic clay fraction, substitution of mullite grog for calcined fire clay and grain alumina for silica, plus the use of an organic binder. Lamination-free extrusions having excellent thermal shock resistance were prepared from a mixture composed of 50 percent low-silica Missouri plastic clay through 100 mesh, 25 percent mullite grog through 6 mesh, and 25 percent alumina through 100 mesh. The mix was pugged under 28-inch vacuum with 1 percent ligno sulfonate binder in 12 percent tempering water. Laboratory tests suitable for process control in the manufacture of retorts are described.

In this issue, the Bureau of Mines announces the availability of the latest of its Mineral Perspectives series: ?MP-4, mineral Industry of Western Europe." This publication describes the mineral industries of 19 Western European countries. For readers unfamiliar with this new series, reproduced below and on the two succeeding pages, is the section dealing with the mineral industries of France. Information regarding acquisition of this publication is found inside the back cover of this issue. FRANCE France is a moderately important producer of minerals, including iron ore, coal, potash, fluorspar, and uranium. In addition, France is a significant processor of imported minerals, chiefly for its own consumption. In general, it has exportable surpluses only of a little iron ore (low-grade ore exported to Luxembourg) and some nonmetallics.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the history, characteristics, distribution, and mineral development potential of 21 lode gold deposits in or near the Chugach National Forest (CNF), AK. It includes findings from a 4-yr (1979 to 1982) mineral evaluation of the CNF conducted by the Bureau and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This evaluation, undertaken to provide the U.S. Forest Service with mineral resource data for use in making decisions on land use, included site-specific mapping and sampling of more than 200-lode gold deposits. The data presented here were compiled from the findings of this 4-yr evaluation and from existing literature. Fourteen of the 21 lode gold deposits described in this report contain a combined identified resource of 117,750 short tons (st) averaging 0.55 oz/st Au and 0.2 oz/st Ag. Two mineralized felsic dikes in the Summit Lake-Palmer Creek area contain a combined identified resource of 18 million st grading 0.02 oz/st Au and 0.16 oz/st Ag. Identified resources were not determined for the remaining five deposits because of a lack of information.

A general survey of the mineral industries of the Black Hills is being made by the Bureau or Mines, but this report is confined to the tin deposits of that region. Because of the strategic importance of tin in a national emergency, special attention was given in the field to deposits of this metal. The present paper outlines the procedure that would be required for determining the potentialities of the most promising deposits as emergency sources of tin and gives estimates of the cost of sampling and rehabilitating some of the old tin mines. Tin mining in the Black Hill was quiescent in 1938. Tin occurs in two areas inn the region. The deposits have received considerable attention, and since 1884 numerous articles have been written about them. It is estimated that between 7 and 15 million dollars has been spent in promotion expenses, acquiring claims, development work, and equipment; production, has totaled about 160 long tons of metallic tin worth about $95,000.3/

As shown in Table 9, consumption has risen steadily for the period November through April, reaching its highest level since June of 1974. Imports remained at a relatively high level in spite of decreased imports from Zaire and Belgium-Luxembourg. Award prices for cobalt sold by the General Services Administration on June 17, 1976 ranged from $5.058 to $5.41211 per pound of contained cobalt. The high bid was about $1 per pound above the current market price set by the major sales agent in the U.S. for cobalt on April 15, 1976. COPPER: Eight domestic producers on July 1 hiked refined copper prices by 4¢ to 74¢ per pound for cathode and to 74.625¢ for electrolytic wirebar. New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX) June pricing of prompt contracted copper averaged 70.6¢, with daily quotes registering between 67¢ and 72.5¢ per pound. In June, London Metal Exchange (LME) cash wirebar prices averaged 70.3¢, trading between a low of 65.5¢ and a high of 73.6¢. End of the month copper stocks totaled 108,758 short tons for the COMEX and 539,350 metric tons for the LME.

The term "Ichtnyol" is a name applied loosely to certain preparations used in pharmacy. These preparations do not occur as such in nature but are manufactured by various chemical processes. Ichthyol is the name trademarked for a product manyfactured by the Irhthyel-Gescllschaft (Cordes Hermanni & Co.) of Hamburg, Germany, and marketed in thin, country by Merck & Co., Inc., (5, 86, 87)3/. Although used in the literature rather loosely, the correctly applied word refers to the product obtained by sulphonating and then neutralizing with ammonia a distillate from the oil retorted from a certain high-sulphur bituminous shale found near the village of Seefeld in the Austrian Tyrol. Due to the fact that fossils of fish and marine animals occur in the limestone associated with the bituminous shale, these deposits have long been known as, the "lchthyolite schistc of Seefeld" ( 55) . The Greek word "ichthys"" for fish and the Latin word "oleum" for oil are the words from which the term is derived. The crude, tarry shale oil, whose distillate is the raw material for the sulphonation process, has been referred to since the Middle Ages as "Dürsten" or "Tirschen" oil, and the term "ichthyel oil" has been used occasionally in the literature to designate the retorted crude oil (92, 93, 106, 117). The first application of the name "Ichthyol" to a particular product is credited to Schröter (35, 129). Various names for products manufactured by sulphonating bituminous distillates have been coined, and in some of these names the root from the word ichthys has been retained. Some of these names can be found in New and Nonofficial Remedies under the heading, Sulphoichthyolate Preparation, and Substitutes (5).

This glossary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining literature in the belief that it will fill a long-felt need. It contains about 20,000 terms; these include both technical and purely local terms related to metal mining, coal mining., quarrying, petroleum, and natural gas, and metallurgical works; names of useful, important, and common minerals and rocks; and geological terms. It presents in one comprehensive volume the available standard, technical terms relating to the mining and mineral industry, as well as provincialisms that have been or are now in use in English-speaking countries. The glossary also includes many terms relating to ceramics and. the clay industry, glass making, foundry practice, railway and building construction, electrical installation and power-plant equipment, and chemical terms relating to metallurgical practice. Complete lists of terms for each of these allied industries are beyond the scope of this glossary. Paleontological terms, although closely associated with geology, are far removed from mining and metallurgical operations, and for this reason have been omitted.

For the sixth year in a row, the value of nonfuel mineral raw materials produced in the United States set a new record, reaching almost $17 billion in 1977. Data provided by the Bureau of Mines show that the 1977 value of domestic nonfuel mineral production exceeded the 1976 value, $16.7 billion, by 2 percent. The $17 billion worth of minerals was the basis for approximately $770 bill ion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. Output of metals decreased $360 mil lion in 1977, while that of nonmetals increased $670 million. Of the 22 metals produced, output of 12 increased, and the value of 13 increased. Among the 46 nonmetallic minerals produced, the quantity of 27 increased, and the value of 34 increased.
