"CFM pneumatic flotation machines were developed by the Institute of Materials Science and Metallurgy, UrFU, and designed to concentrate a wide range of ores and man-made materials. A key principle of work is pulp preparation for flotation owing to its saturation with finely dispersed air bubbles in ejectors. CFM plants, their advantages over domestic and foreign prototypes are described. CFM pneumatic machine commercialization resulted in: - machines demonstrated high floatation efficiency for concentration of rebellious pyrrhotite-bearing copper and zink by simultaneous floatation of copper and zinc minerals and depressing pyrrhotite. CFM- 1400M introduction allowed simplifying and optimizing the flow chart and increase extraction of copper - by 5.4%, zinc - by 9.5% and improve the quality of copper (3% Cu) and zinc (1.5% Zn) concentrates. - due to copper pyrite concentration by using CFM 1400M overall copper recovery was increased by 1.5 %, and the content of copper in concentrates - by1%. According to the results of pilot runs, the use of CFM flotation for zinc cakes concentration strongly intensifies the process of cleaning water-soluble metal compounds and, thereby, increases the efficiency of flotation concentration and subsequent milling. CFM machines showed higher specific capacity (three or four times higher) (both for feed material and froth product). Specifically, CFM froth product has higher content of useful elements (silver by 0.014 % abs. zinc by 0.31% abs.) and better extraction (silver by 6.08% abs., zinc by 0.31% abs., and sulfide sulfur by 13.7 %). Sulfide sulfur content of CFM product chamber as compared to mechanical flotation machines is two times lower (0.48 vs. 0.95 %)."

"Spherical grinding media (balls) are the most widely used media for comminution of ores by grinding. One way to optimize the grinding process in a tumbling mill is associated with the development and testing of a new media shape. By modelling simulation study of the behaviour of two types of grinding media (balls and tetraballpebs) in the grinding process was conducted to determine the possible advantages of the new media shape. Tetraballpebs are in the shape of tetrahedrons with spherical convex walls. D305 mm and L305 mm Bond ball mill sizes were used in the experiment. They are modelled milling tetraballpebs bodies corresponding by weight to five ball sizes, namely ¾, 7/8, 1, 1¼ and 1½ inches which form the grinding media used in a Bond ball mill. They are cast steel grinding bodies. Studies carried out with both types of grinding media include equal number of milling bodies of the same weight and volume. Having thus ensured a uniform mass of the grinding media and the same number of milling bodies, all other conditions and process parameters being identical, conclusions can be drawn about the influence of the grinding media shape on the grinding process. Compared to steel balls, the tetraballpebs used in laboratory tests carried out in closed cycle by Bond ball mill and the study of the rate of grinding gave five to six per cent higher yield of a control size of minus 0.1 mm. Measurements of the Bond ball mill power consumption demonstrated that tetraballpebs grinding media achieved energy saving of 4.7 per cent for the production of one gram of the control size of minus 0.1 mm."

"Processing of the tailings accumulated over the lifetime of Madneuli Copper Concentrator is an opportunity to extract additional salable copper and gold products. This paper presents a pre-concentration process for the valuable components (copper and gold) of the accumulated tailings. The developed process makes it possible to obtain a copper pyrite concentrate with a yield of 14.05%, copper grade of 1.36%, and recovery of 83.22% containing 3.78 g/ton of gold at a recovery of 84.31%. The bulk concentrate is produced by a combined process bringing together selective flotation to produce salable copper concentrate and hydrometallurgical processing of the selective flotation tailings to recover gold. KEYWORDS: FLOTATION, ALBION PROCESS, LEACHING, COPPER CONCENTRATE, SELECTION Madneuli Copper Concentrator, Georgia, was put into operation in 1975. Over its lifetime, 40 mn tons of tailings have been accumulated at the tailings storage facility (TSF). Sampling of the TSF has indicated that the average copper and gold grade is 0.23% and 0.56-0.65 g/ton, respectively. Accordingly, the TSF can be classified as a technogenic reserve. This paper discusses pre-concentration of valuable components using flotation, followed by processing of the bulk concentrate in the Albion process. Mineralogical analysis of the accumulated tailings showed that the main ore mineral is pyrite (11.71%). Copper minerals are mainly represented by chalcopyrite (0.7%). The main nonmetallic mineral is quartz (67.3%); sericite, chlorites, etc. also occur. Pyrite is present both as liberated grains and intergrowth. The absolute majority of copper minerals are found as intergrowth with pyrite, less often with quartz. Ore minerals are slightly oxidized. Chemical analysis results are shown in Table 1. Particle size distribution shows that the size class -0.2 mm - 0.045 mm has the highest grade of 0.85 to 0.97 g/ton of gold. Size class +1.25 mm has the lowest grade. Based on the chemical and mineralogical studies and particle size distribution, an optimized process was developed for pre-concentration of the valuable components prior to hydrometallurgical processing. Several gravitation, direct selective, bulk, and bulk selective flotation processes were trialed. (1,2)"

The dissemination grain size of chalcopyrite is really fine and refractory grains of -10µm take up 25%. Dissemination relationships among chalcopyrite with pyrrhotite, pyrite, marcasite and gangue minerals are complex. Content of Fe-bearing sulphides and Fe-bearing silicates associated with chalcopyrite reaches to about 60%. It’s hard to liberate and separate chalcopyrite from pyrrhotite. The above four are the main mineral processing difficulties of a copper ore in China. Because of the similar floatability and poor separation effect between chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, enhanced depressing and collecting method was adopted in Cu-S separation before 2009. Due to the different magnetism among chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and Fe-bearing silicates, magnetic separation is creatively induced in Cu floatation circuit based on the in-depth study of process mineralogy. High efficiency and new Cu-S separation technology of "Rough concentrate regrinding-pyrrhotite rejecting from middling by magnetic separation" and a highly selective copper minerals collector YL-1 had been developed to solve the difficult problems of refractory Cu-S separation, which are heavy load of middling recirculation,difficulty in upgrading Cu concentrate, unstable locked cycle and low separation indexes. And grade of Cu concentrate has been increased by 3.33%, recovery of Cu and Ag has been increased by 19.32% and 10% respectively.

"After the milling and flotation of the platinum bearing ore, the flotation concentrate is electrically smelted in 6-in-line electric arc furnaces and the resulting furnace matte treated in Peirce Smith converters to remove the iron sulphide. The iron free (less than 1% Fe) converter matte is then granulated and sent to the Base Metals- and Precious Metals Refineries for further processing.During the smelting and converting processes two distinct gas streams are produced.The Peirce Smith converter off gas contains 4% - 9% SO2 which is treated in a conventional Sulphuric Acid Plant to produce sulphuric acid (H2SO4).The electric furnace off gas contains 0.9% SO2 and was (until September 2002) vented through a 91 meter high stack to atmosphere.Off gasses which contain less than 3% SO2 is difficult to handle and quite a few processes had been developed over the years to cope with this gas. A broad spectrum of process suppliers and technology approaches is available and the different technologies can be divided into a few main approaches i.e.Scrubbing of the off gas with an alkaline solution to produce an environmentally friendly and stable waste product which can be discharged onto a tailings dam or permanent landfill site.Physical absorption of the SO2 into a chemical solution to produce high quality chemically pure process chemicals.Catalytic reaction of SO2 with O2 to produce SO3 which is absorbed in water to produce sulphuric acid of less than 90% strength.In October 2002 Impala Platinum commissioned a Sulfacid Plant at its Smelter in Rustenburg which recovers the SO2 from the electric furnace off gasses into a weak sulphuric acid solution.The Sulfacid Plant technology is widely used in the paint pigment industry. This is, however, the first application of the technology on electric furnace off gas.The furnace off gasses contains flue dust which is removed in electrostatic precipitators. The gas exiting the precipitators normally still contains between 40 mg/Nm3 and 60 mg/Nm3 dust and passes through a quench-scrubber before entering the reactors. The quench-scrubber cools the electric furnace offgas down from ± 200 °C to 60 °C and act as a final dust removal stage."

29% of the total ore mined in the Russian Federation for copper production is finely disseminated copper-zinc-pyrite ores of the Ural Region. Physical and chemical characteristics of pyrite copper-zinc ores make for difficulties in obtaining high indices during processing. At present, the authors have elaborated the technology to improve the quality of copper concentrates up to 20.0% for the ones obtained during pyrite copper-zinc ore processing (based on the example of the ore mining and processing enterprise ?Uchalinsky GOK?, Russian Federation). There are examples of use of fair-sized pneumo-mechanical flotation machines by modernization of processing plants. A significant part of the currently production of the non-ferrous and precious metals is from sulfide ores. Character feature of sulfide ores is the presence in them always pyrite and wide range of different sulfide minerals else. These minerals are the carriers of valuable for industry metals. Due to the low content of the main components, very often call on the use of collective- selective flow-sheets. The extraction of minerals in the collective concentrates determined in a large extent the effectiveness of the collective-selective sheets. In conditions of bulk flotation kinetics to floatate of the various minerals is different. Due to why it is and how it can be used for a more effective selection of minerals ?this is the main task of this report. For this purpose are used results from the bulk flotation of pyrite, copper sulfides, molybdenite, galena, blenda. It is separated and place of host rocks. Base it of large experimentation material, including both electro-kinetic measurements of mineral systems, as well as laboratory flotation tests and factories monitoring it is established kinetics of flotation of mineral particles in conditions of collective flotation. Made an effort to clarify the effect as of the species and the proportion of different sulfide minerals involved in flotation pulp else. Traced was the impact of the density and aeration of the flotation pulp on deferens in kinetics of mineral flotation in condition of balk flotation. The obtained results are used to increase the efficiency of the diffraction flotation of the complex sulfide ores containing precious metals. Iron ore in Bellary-Hospet region is friable in nature and generates a significant amount of micro-fines (-150 µm) during mechanized mining, handling and processing. Present beneficiation practice generally employs spiral classification followed by hydrocycloning to remove slimes (-15 µm). The iron ore fines, beneficiated at JSW Steel Ltd., Karnataka generates tailing having 48-52% iron content in the form of slimes, which accounts for 50 to 55% by weight with respect to classifier overflow. The loss of iron as slime is considerably high. In this context, laboratory studies were carried out with different combination of beneficiation techniques with an objective to develop an efficient flow sheet to achieve better product grade and recovery from classifier overflow. The results revealed that de-sliming process by hydrocycloning in combination with either magnetic separation or froth flotation leads to increased iron loss in tailing. Based on investigation it is observed that forward flotation is beneficial over the reverse flotation. The experimental approach of forward flotation on classifier overflow followed by magnetic separation on flotation tailing resulted in overall product grade of 62.9% Fetotal and 70.3% yield. The tailing contains 34.6% iron, which accounts for 29.7% by weight with respect to classifier overflow.

"In case of free gold presence in ore, there is always problem of a choice between the gravity-flotation and gravity separation flowsheets. Study of morphology of gold being extracted by different methods allows to find the most efficient solution. One of the latest methods of gold concentration for wide range of grain size (-0.8+0 mm) is a flash flotation. The paper presents comparative testing results of flash and centrifugal separation.The goal of the studies was to determine process and flotation parameters of flash flotation. In case valued minerals are soft if compared to host rock, such minerals tend to concentrate into circulating load of grinding circuit. Thus, valued minerals can be overground, and in turn, will result in low extraction in flotation circuit. Integration of flash flotation operation into process flowsheet has been evaluated. Flash flotation operation can be successfully used not only for gold but also copper, lead, nickel and silver minerals.With low-sulphide ores being a case study under laboratory conditions, various flotation (impeller rotational speed, air flowrate) and process (pulp density, collector consumption, frother consumption, time of flotation) parameters were studied in view of its impact on gold flash flotation. Experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions using special pneumatic mechanical flotation machines.INTRODUCTIONGravity separation is used for extraction of coarse gold before cyanidation and before flotation of polymetallic ores to increase gold total recovery into gravity copper and lead concentrates.Benefit of the flash flotation is efficient recovery of coarse gold carrier particles (sulphides) thus preventing its regrinding and, as a result, low recovery. Furthermore, combination of flash and conventional flotation results in final tailings that do not require further cyanidation.Combined gravity-flotation flowsheets are designed for concentration of ores containing gold within thewide range of grain sizes (see Table 1)."

It is a well-known fact that usage of reverse cationic flotation in magnetite ores processing enables to improve the quality of magnetite concentrates. We designed an iron ore concentrate technology (with 70 -71 % of iron) including reverse cationic flotation in pneumo-mechanical flotators RIF (developed by RIVS Corporation, Russia) with good biodegradable etheramines as collectors for flotation of quartz. Practical application of high biodegradable flotation reagents decreases environmental impact risk of objects and enterprises of mining industrial complex. This work presents results of development of flotation technology for production of high quality ferruginous concentrates from magnetite ores of Russia and Ukraine deposits. "In this paper, we present the study’s results of electrical separation processes on the basis of new separator designs, new technological solutions, and newly discovered effects. We considered the options of enrichment by magnet separation of magnetite and titanomagnetite ores, ores and products containing chromium and manganese, ores of non-ferrous and precious metals. During pneumo-electric separation of mixed iron ore of SMPC, 43.3% of the output of the concentrate with an iron content of 61.7% was obtained in one step, with extraction of 70.5%. The paper also presents the results of the finalization on the air-electric separator of the magnetic fraction when separating oxidized ores of MPPOO (mining and processing plant of oxidized ores) on the Jans polygrade magnetic separator. A concentrate was obtained with an iron content of 65.1% with the extraction of 95.0% and tails with an iron content of 13.0%. The possibility of obtaining low-silica concentrates from these ores with an iron content of 67.15 and a quartz of 2.88% is shown. Also, the results of tests on the enrichment of chromite ores on the firing-magnetic scheme with corona-electrostatic separation are considered. On the initial ore of the Don MPP (mining and processing plant), a concentrate with a content of 61.8% Cr2O3 was obtained with a quartz content of ~ 1.0%. The results of pneumo-electric separation with triboelectric charge of the separated particles are presented. The results of the tests indicate a principal possibility of enriching chromite ores without costly high-temperature roasting. Dry technology of enrichment of manganese ores with the use of electrical separation increases the quality of the oxidized concentrate to the first grade and raises the total extraction by 2 times. For the Chineya deposit of titanomagnetite ores with copper impurities, electroseparation operations were carried out on two samples with a Cu content of 1.93 and 3.75%, respectively. For a sample with a Cu content of 6.02%, a copper concentrate output of 24.42% was obtained with a Cu content of 23.82% and the extraction of 94.88%. The results of enrichment by electroseparation of gold-containing sulfide ores can have the practical importance. For ores of the Berezovskoye deposit, a pyritic concentrate containing 100 g / t of gold was obtained after two or three operations of IES (integrated energy systems)."

Results of the study of chloride ion concentration effect to osmium-187 sorption from wastewater of copper smelter with use of foreign anionites of different basicity and structure are presented in the work. It was found that the increase of chloride ion concentration in the wastewater helps to increase recovery of osmium using anionites regardless of their nature. The ways to intensify the process are proposed. The method for osmium elution from the anionites with potassium iodate solution was developed. It was shown that the method lets to recover up to 99% of osmium from the anionites. Recommendations for selection of eluents for better recovery of osmium from the anionites were elaborated. "The valuable materials resulting from the processing of gold-bearing ores are often refractory to direct gold recovery through cyanidation. There are multiple methods for chemical liberation of gold prior to cyanidation such as pressure and biological oxidation as well as atmospheric oxidation which is typically used in combination with physical activation of material by ultrafine grinding such as the Albion ProcessTM. This paper will examine the data from process testworks carried out to estimate the efficiency of the Albion Process™ for the oxidation of materials with a wide composition range prior to cyanidation. The data will be compared to that obtained by direct cyanidation of the feed (without oxidation) and from the testing of pressure oxidation on the feed prior to cyanidation. Albion Process™ tests were conducted in Institute TOMS with participation of Glencore Technology Pty Ltd (Australia). Refractory concentrates obtained from the ores of several Russian and CIS deposits were used as feed for the testing. These concentrates were also subjected to a material composition study and testing using conventional recovery methods. The resulted test data make it possible to perform an integrated assessment of process properties for materials with different compositions, compare performance of various process flowsheets for the materials under study, and conclude on efficiency of Albion Process™ application for gold recovery from refractory materials different in their composition.INTRODUCTION It is often the case that gold ore concentrates are refractory to gold recovery by direct cyanidation. This refractory nature is as a rule attributable to fine gold dissemination in minerals, most often in pyrite and other sulphides, as well as to the increased amount of components impeding cyanide leaching of gold due to cyanide consumption and reducing process conditions. The refractoriness of the concentrates results in low gold recovery values when conventional cyanidation technology is used. In this context, various additional processes are applied to breakdown such refractory sulphide concentrates, i.e. mechanical breakdown (fine and ultrafine grinding), chemical breakdown (atmospheric oxidation, e.g. Leachox, acid-oxygen oxidation, pressure oxidation – POX, bacterial oxidation – BIOX), and thermochemical breakdown (various roasting methods). Such breakdown processes allow for increase in recovery of finely disseminated gold during the downstream cyanidation, however, their application is cost-intensive and does not always ensure economic benefit."

The reduction and nitridation of preoxidized ilmenite pellets were investigated with the prospect of creating grain refiners containing titanium oxides and titanium nitride dispersoids. All the reduction and nitridation reactions were conducted in a furnace with a thermogravimetric analysis system under a H2-N2 gas mixture of 5 L/min. The ilmenite pellets were reduced at 1100°C for 4 hours under 80%H2-20%N2 gas mixture, and then respectively nitrided at 700°C, 800°C, 900°C and 1000°C for 12 hours under 10%H2-90%N2 gas mixture. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and analyzed by Energy Dispersive Spectrometers (EDS) and Electron Probe Mapping Analysis (EPMA). Iron oxides were reduced into metallic iron, and oxides of titanium were found, but titanium nitride particles were not identified in the products under the prevailing conditions.

"This article presents the results of comprehensive research on the quantitative distribution of gold content in the raw ore and tailings from the flotation enrichment process at the Ellatzite Med plant. The study is a quantitative and qualitative determination of the presence of gold in the ore processed by Ellatzite Med AD, as well as its behavior and distribution in the various metallurgical products of the flotation process. The representativeness of the samples taken is ensured by the frequency of sampling: four work shifts of sampling on different days within a period of four consecutive weeks. The form of gold present is determined both in the analyzed samples and in separate fractions - granulometric, magnetic, electromagnetic, heavy and light. A summarized diagram presents the phase distribution of gold in the final products of the dressing process. The results obtained are used for further analysis and evaluation of the actual technological parameters of the gold. It was established that an increase in the initial gold content, respectively in the content of native gold in the raw ore, with the current process, leads to an increase in gold losses, mostly in the native gold phase. The conducted analysis of the results from the comprehensive tests on determining the form of gold present in the various enrichment products gave rise to further research with the use of a Knelson centrifugal concentrator."

"Dynamic air classifiers separate particles in a gas flow due to different particle trajectories utilizing differences in the settling velocity of particles as characteristic property for separation. The present contribution takes a close look at the separation of heterogeneous mixtures, in which valuables and gangue minerals show significant differences in density. The focus was on a moist iron ore sample, which was characterized in terms of mineralogy, grain size distribution, and particle size distribution. The material was classified at a cut size of 45 µm and at feed moistures between 0 and 6 wt.-%. Additionally to standard characterization techniques, the moisture of both products was measured as well as the yield of fines as product fraction in a corresponding processing plant. In addition, an automated mineral liberation analysis (MLA) provided information of the enrichment and segregation of individual mineral phases in the products. The MLA of the classification products reveals a selective comminution of the mineral phases and especially on overmilling of the valuables. For the first time, the separation of individual mineral phases has been assessed and compared to the classic assessment of classification processes by means of particle size analyses. The result of such a separation process depends on the gas throughput of the classifier, the dimensions, design and rotational speed of the deflector wheel, as well as the state of dispersion and thus the geometry of as well as the turbulence and interparticle interactions in the separation zone. Air classification of moist feed materials can be divided into several sub-process (Leschonski, 1977; Mütze et al., 2016): - dosage of the feed material, - dispersing the solid feed material into a gas stream, - feeding the dispersed material into the classification zone by pneumatic conveying, - drying of moist particles during pneumatic conveying, - separation of coarse and fine particles, and - separation of fine particles from gas."

India has sizeable number of small deposits of rare metal bearing minerals namely columbite-tantalite, pyrochlore, beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and rare-earth element bearing minerals monazite and xenotime in different parts of India. Pegmatites, alkali granites, syenites, and the derived gravel and soils are the main source for rare metal and rare earth (RMRE) minerals. The RMRE minerals are classified as prescribed substances under Atomic Energy act of 1962 keeping in view the uses in the nuclear industry. Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the sole agency responsible for exploration and exploitation of RMRE minerals in India since 1962. The latest technological advancements and applications in the field of space, electronics, communication and nuclear industry using these metals and their products have necessitated to augment the production and resources of RMRE minerals. These minerals play a significant role in the technological and economic development of the country. The light rare earth element bearing mineral monazite is abundant in beach sands and is being commercially exploited by Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL). Columbite-tantalite, the chief source for niobium and tantalum (Nb-Ta) metals present in the pegmatitic gravel are recovered by small mobile beneficiation plants. The cut and fill method of mining adapted is eco-friendly. The processing flow-sheet consists of wet sizing at ½ in and 1mm followed by gravity concentration of sized products utilizing the methods of jigging and wet tabling. The sizing equipment include revolving and vibratory screens and the gravity concentration equipments used are fixed sieve jigs and movable screen jigs for final upgradation. The gravity concentrates are further upgraded by magnetic separation to remove magnetite and ilmenite. The mine areas are reclaimed by filling with coarse size tailings and new plantations. These mobile pilot plants were earlier operated in Bihar mica belt, Jharkhand, pegmatitic areas of Karnataka and Nellore mica belt of Andhra Pradesh and are currently being operated in Bastar-Malkangiri pegmatite belt of Chhattisgarh and pegmatites of Jharsuguda district of Orissa. Beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and cassiterite minerals are the by-products from the pegmatite ores. Fergusonite, samarskite and microlite are the other niobium and tantalum bearing minerals which are also found in pegmatites. Xenotime, the chief mineral of yttirium generally occurs in granites and pegmatites. The rare earth minerals monazite and xenotime get concentrated in the placer sands of rivers and beaches. The occurrence of xenotime in the sands of Siri River and Deo River in Chhotanagpur granitic terrain in parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are an example. These sands containing 1-2.5% heavy minerals were processed by a mobile plant consisting of sizing equipments like trommel and vibratory screen followed by separation of heavy minerals from -1mm sands with the help of gravity concentration equipments like spirals/shaking tables/sluices. Xenotime and monazite from the pre-concentrate are further separated by magnetic and electro-static methods. The present paper illustrates the pilot plant set up for the recovery of rare metal as well as rare earth minerals. Professor A.M. Gaudin and his students at MIT were dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of mineral processing and as a consequence were constantly searching for better quantatative descriptions of size reduction, liberation and mineral separations. I have had the good fortune of meeting Professor Gaudin and working with many the modeling pioneers who followed him. I have observed first hand the refinement of mineral processing models as they increased in realisticness moving up the steps of the pyramid (see figure below) from pure empiricism to the current pinacle of physics based models. During this journey our industry benefited significanbtly as model prediction errors were reduced from ± 20% to ± 1%. Unit operation and plant simulations improved in accuracy and speed of calculations.

Selection of mill size for reducing a feed material of a given size to the desired product size is generally based on the specific energy estimate obtained from Bond test. Over the last thirty years or so, an attempt has been made to develop a more accurate and powerful alternative approach based on the characterization of the particle breakage kinetics and material transport through the mill over a range of operating conditions of interest and correlating the degree of size reduction achieved with the net specific energy input to the mill. Particle breakage kinetics are described in terms of the specific grinding rate and breakage distribution parameters for the individual size fractions. Precise estimates of these parameters and the net energy input to the test ball mill (a laboratory or pilot scale mill) are important for development of desired energy-size correlations. In this context, three tasks are important: (a) preparation of the feed charge, (b) design of batch grinding experiments and (c) computational technique used for estimation of the breakage rate and breakage distribution parameters. This paper highlights several aspects of these three tasks that have been overlooked by researchers working in this field, and describes a more appropriate approach for estimation of model parameters and specific energy input. Several examples are included based on the data available in the literature and those generated in our laboratories to illustrate important points.
